My Sunday Reset Routine
°♡°
Self care is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves, especially in this day and age. Having a good reset day at least once a week is vital for our well-being and health! Why wouldn't we want to cherish ourselves? One of my fave self care activities is having Sundays all to myself to just indulge in.. me!
Tumblr media
7 am ♡
I start by waking up around 7-7:30 am, opening my drapes, letting in each ray of sunlight bounce through the bedroom, I usually open the window to get rid of stale energy, and to let in fresh air <3
8 am ♡
Now, I usually hop in the shower and get some tea going, brushing my teeth while I shower, and washing my face. After drinking some tea and doing my skincare routine, I like to take just a couple of minutes to relax and ground myself.
9 am ♡
Breakfast is always light and something simple; lately, I've been loving brioche bread with avocado spread on top, with a sunny side up egg on top. I don't particularly like tomatoes, so I opt out for them; eating usually takes 20-30 minutes to really be present and mindful of my meal.
After breakfast I like to write in my personal journal, or take some time to draw. Allowing my creativity to flow in the mornings helps me throughout the day to think better and work more efficiently.
Tumblr media
Misc. ♡
After my initial morning, there's a lot of space in between my morning and night. Here's some things I do; I don't do all these things every Sunday, but these are some of the things I choose from.
Cleaning my space
Spend some time in the sun
Take a walk
Read
Clean bedding; sheets, blanket, etc..
Work on vision board
Water my plants
Meal prep
Plan for upcoming week
Tumblr media
Night 🌙
˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚ At night, I like to reset myself in my more digital aspect and mental ♡ This gives me a clear head while also keeping my phone clean!
8 pm ♡
Most Sundays I really love taking a hot bath, and adding some of my favorite epsom salts and or lavender & rose buds, and if I'm not in the mood for a bath, I take this time to clean up.
9 pm ♡
Around 9 p.m., I like to start my skin care routine. Before I start , I like to get in my vintage silky night set or gown so I can feel like my most feminine self. Afterward, I remove my makeup, braidmy hair, dry brush my entire body for increased blood flow, and then moisturize! I also like to go through my phone and delete any spam or any unneeded info.
10 pm ♡
Once I'm done with that, I like to finish my week by writing in my journal about the entire week and a general reflection. I usually go to bed by 10 or 11, so doing this helps me get into a sleepy mood ꒰ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ꒱
Overall, having a reset routine is important for your health, each and every aspect. The most important person in your world is you, so take care of yourself <3

Best Summer Perfumes To Smell Great The right fragrance can affect your mood, trigger old memories, and even help define your personality. However, regardless of how much love you have for the scent, you cannot wear it throughout the year. Just as you change your beauty products depending on the weather, you should also do the same for perfumes. During summer, the high heat tends to affect fragrances as they evaporate faster and project further. You should, therefore, avoid scents that are too potent as they can become overwhelming. During the warm months, it is best to use lighter and more refreshing fragrances. Here are some perfume selections that you can use during summer. See also: Best Perfumes For Women 5 Best Summer Perfumes Everyone Loves Byredo Sundazed by Byredo Eau De Parfum Spray (Unisex) [amazon box="B07R3VRLFP" grid="1"] The Byredo Sundazed by Byredo Eau De Parfum Spray is a perfect perfume for use when on the beach during summer. The sweet and citrus-scented fragrance consists of some bright top notes of mandarin orange and Californian lemon. It balances beautifully with fresh cotton candy, white musk, neroli, sambac, and some hints of jasmine that give the perfume some floral freshness. Both men and women can use it. Prada Candy Perfume for Women Eau De Parfum Spray [amazon box="9788072305" grid="1"] The Prada Candy is a perfume that you can hardly ignore. It comes in an original bold packaging made of luxurious materials giving it a timeless and sophisticated look. The bottle is an inspiration of vintage flacons and bears a Prada logo in gold. It has a pump that is perched on its golden neck together with a band of pink saffiano on the bottle. The fragrance is suitable for a confident woman as it contains some notes of caramel, Laotian benzoin, and white musk. As the perfume dries, the caramel note slowly decreases as the benzoin and musk become more apparent. The musk gives the fragrance a slight spiciness to contrast the sweetness by the caramel. The perfume is best for use during the cold season. You can, however, wear it for any occasion. Chloe Nomade Natural Spray Vaporisateur [amazon box="B079P8QHHG" grid="1"] The Chloe Nomade, Natural Spray Vaporisateur, is a product of the design house of Chloe and came into the market in 2008. The perfume is for a free-spirited woman that has the confidence to confront the world. It comes in a seemingly simple yet stylish transparent bottle that gives you a direct vision of the rosy beige fragrance. It also contains a pink ribbon that helps to seal its golden cap. The perfume is intense as it carries notes of freesia, jasmine, orange, bergamot, lychee, amber wood, oakmoss, lemon, and Mirabelle. Its floral and warm scent evokes a vision of freedom and openness to the world. Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Coconut Fizz Eau de Toilette Spray [amazon box="B07PPZNN48" grid="1"] If you love a coconut scent, you cannot go wrong with the Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Coconut Fizz Eau de Toilette Spray. The perfume is a 1999 creation and part of the Aqua Allegoria collection that consists of intensely fresh fragrances. The scent is exotic and luminous as it invites you into a tropical world filled with coconuts. It makes use of coconut water with a touch of some fresh fruits. The fragrance is bright blue, and you can quickly notice it from afar. It contains some notes of coconut nectar, bergamot, watermelon, Freesia, Sandalwood and Tonkabean. The fragrance is suitable for wearing during warm days. It does not have a heavy or synthetic smell and can quickly remind you of summer. Bath and Body Works GINGHAM Fine Fragrance Mist [amazon box="B07Q8VD5R4" grid="1"] The GINGHAM Fine Fragrance Mist by Bath and Body Works is highly popular due to its evocative scents. The fragrance comes in a cylindrical transparent bottle that has a spray nozzle that delivers excellent coverage. Its packaging is leak proof and sturdy. You can as well travel around with it. The creation of Honorine Blanc, a Firmenich master perfumer, contains notes of clementine, violet petals, and blue freesia. The notes blend perfectly to create a fresh and vibrant fragrance. It also includes a conditioning aloe that helps to nourish the skin as it blends with the scents. Wearing Scents During Summer During summer, you can wear fragrances with some white light florals, but you should avoid any sickly sweet aromas. You should also avoid heavy blends such as vanilla, patchouli, and some sugary aromas. Since perfumes evaporate quickly in summer, you should first layer your skin with a moisturizer or body lotion before applying the perfumes. It gives the fragrance a place to hold on to. You should as well try not to use scented soaps or creams so that your perfume cannot compete for dominance. If your skin is sensitive, a reaction may occur whenever you apply perfume during summer. Whenever the sweat and scent mixes, a reaction can occur on the skin surface and irritate. You can then spay it on the base of your hair as the scent will stay for long without having to touch the skin. If you do not have sensitive skin, you can apply your perfume on areas that have good circulation and warmth such as the throat, behind the knees, inside the elbows, and on the wrists. For your scent to stay locked down for long, ensure that your skin is well hydrated by using an excellent moisturizer. Read Next:Best Long Lasting Perfumes For Women Summing Up When choosing a perfume, there are more things you need to consider apart from a pleasant smell. You should find how the weather affects the scent. Warm weather has an effect on your skin chemistry, therefore, making fragrances you use during winter not effective during summer. A perfume may feel fresh, crispy, and heighten your mood during winter, but when it mixes with sweat in the summer, it may become overwhelming. You should, therefore, opt for summer scents during summers such as perfumes with some fruit and floral notes. 5 Simple Bridal Self-Care Rituals to Unwind + Energize
Take a deep breath. Go on, try it. Now — can you remember the last time you stopped to just breath? Planning a wedding can be so consuming that those simple, human necessities can all too easily slip away. Deep breaths, long baths, hydrating your body and giving yourself those small yet gratifying moments that you probably need now more than ever.
We know not every bride can schedule in a weekly massage or make it to yoga every morning (cheers to those who can!), so today we’re focusing on 5 simple rituals that you can do at home. Five things to make you feel more you. To combat the stress that threatens to dry out your skin, darken those undereye circles, bloat the belly, and overwhelm your mind. These easy routines will help you feel well rested, well hydrated, and overall more like your best self for the big day to come. Take care, loves. We give you permission.
The gorgeous photos below are by the stunning Elizabeth Messina! We don’t blame you if the images alone – I mean, how comfy do those Bella Notte linens look?! –  are enough to help you zen out :)
Daily Ritual: Amp up Your Hydration Game
WHY: In case you need a reminder of the benefits of hydration, let this long list motivate you to reach for the H20: proper hydration keeps your skin plump and glowing; helps your muscles fight fatigue, helps your kidneys function correctly to rid your body of toxins, keeps your bowels working properly (bye-bye bloat!) and helps brain function to strengthen cognitive function and memory. source, source
HOW: So, how much should you drink in a day? Harvard suggests a simple solution of 2-3 cups per hour for most people, more if you’re sweating or working out. Water is the best option for hydration, but this is you we’re talking about, and you deserve something a little special. We say, fancy it up with some infused water. Simply chop up some cucumber, mint, citrus, or whatever is in season and let your water absorb those spa-like properties. Amazon has an adorable rose gold fruit infuser water bottle so you can take it to go!
TRY IT: This recipe for detox infused water is a favorite. Or, try a morning beauty tonic! We’re fans of Bali’s famous turmeric + ginger elixir, Jamu, an anti-inflammatory healing drink that’s delicious hot or cold: here’s a recipe. Glow on, sister.
///
Weekly Ritual: Unwind with an Infused Bath
WHY: Hop in a warm bath and let the stress melt away. Honestly — it’s proven! Submerging in warm water produces feelings of calm and ease, diminishing anxiety and pessimism. A warm bath before bed produces melatonin to helps you sleep better, soothes achy muscles, and can do wonders for tired skin when infused with the right ingredients.
TRY IT: Draw a warm bath (not too hot) and soak for 15-20 minutes with some of our favorites tried and true infusions:
For achy muscles: Add 2 cups of Dr. Teal’s Lavendar Epsom Salts.
To soothe dry skin: Add 10 drops of rose essential oil to either a carrier oil (jojoba, olive, or coconut) or 1 cup Epsom salt; Draw the bath before adding mixture then give it a stir before getting in.
Because you deserve it: Throw in some few dried botanicals, grab a treat, and soak up that alone time!

Bi-Weekly Ritual: Love Your Skin with a Simple Face Mask
WHY: Because face masks solve all problems, don’t you know?! But seriously, there is something that makes you feel on top of that to-do list when you put on a face mask. You could always grab a sheet mask on your next Target run or mix some apple cider vinegar with Aztec Healing Clay, but we’re talking simple + at home remedies here. And you can find our go-to right there in your pantry.
HOW: It’s honey! If you haven’t read up on the skincare benefits of honey, prepare to be amazed. Honey is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and gently nurturing like the best hug. The low pH balance means that bacteria can’t survive, which translates to an environment where acne is a thing of the past. It’s moisturizing, it’s great for sensitive skin — honey can do no wrong. source
TRY IT: First, make sure you have the highest quality raw honey you can find/afford. Pick some up at your local farmers market or grab some manuka honey online. Splash your (makeup free!) face with a little water to make the honey easier to spread. Next, spread 1-2 teaspoons across your face and neck. Let the honey mask sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off. Lock in the moisture with a your favorite moisturizer or sweet almond oil.

Nightly Ritual: Get Your Beauty Sleep
WHY: We all know a good night’s rest is important and beneficial to the mind, body, and soul. But you’re planning a wedding, here! So, chances are that while your body and soul may be ready to call it a day, that mind of yours could have other plans.
HOW: The good news? There are a number of ways to shut your brain off and win the battle. From meditation apps to quick yoga routines.
TRY IT: Here are a few quick tips to get your entire self ready for a rejuvenating night’s sleep!
Make the rule and follow it: your bed is only for sleeping! Keep the room temperature cool and the lighting as dark as possible. Avoid screens 1-2 hours before bedtime to prepare your brain and eyes for the rest to come.
Get Calm: Download the Calm app for breathing exercise and guided meditations to help you sleep and mix some Natural Vitality Calm (aka the anti-stress drink) into a glass of water to get your daily intake of magnesium.
Try this 7-minute bedtime yoga flow from one of our favorite instructors, Adriene Mishler of Yoga with Adriene.
Treat yourself and invest in bedding that you LOVE! (The dreamy linens you see here? They’re from Bella Notte!) Bella Notte’s brand director Taylor (who is also the founder’s daughter!) shares this quote with us about how her bedding was essential to a good night’s sleep before her wedding, “Leading up to my wedding, I knew one of the biggest gifts I could give myself was a good night’s sleep. I piled my bed with soft down pillows and a billowy duvet, and our Madera Luxe sheets–they’re buttery soft and also sustainable, so I felt great every time I climbed in. Curling up in my sheets every night, bedroom window flung open to let in cool, fresh air, is still my favorite way to fall asleep!”

Daily Ritual: Be Present by Calling on Gratitude
WHY: Gratitude helps you to pinpoint the goodness in your life. Maybe your florist calls to say peonies are a no-go, or your seamstress didn’t get it quite right, or your venue fell through at the last minute. We ALL know that wedding planning comes with both expected and unexpected stresses. But at the end of the day, you’re preparing to spend your life with your person. Call on gratitude to refocus on what you have and where you are, rather than what you lack.
TRY IT: There are several ways to practice gratitude on a daily basis. We won’t lie — it can be hard at first. But, like working a muscle, it gets easier with time. You’ll find yourself focusing in on what you’re thankful for quicker and with more precision.
Make a list: Keep a journal or note on your phone and jot down 1-3 things you’re thankful for each day.
Send a note: Thank-you notes can feel like a chore when you’re planning a wedding, but once you sit down to write a meaningful message you’ll find its one of the greater joys in the process.
Pray or meditate: Spend time giving thanks for your relationships, for warm weather, for coffee — whatever it is that makes your life happy!

///

5 Beauty Favourites: August 2020
Do any of you have any huge objections if I widen the scope of my monthly favourites round-ups to include  stuff other than beauty? I feel it would inject some new and welcome joie de vivre into what is an old – yet surprisingly still very popular – format.
The only problem might be (spoiler alert!) is that some of the items, if I’m let loose completely from my self-imposed constraints, might be a bit random. For example this month, had I been given free rein, I would most probably have included a faux-antique rug in my favourites as well as a vintage BelgoChrom table I picked up (not literally) from Belgium for an absolute steal.
I don’t mean to imply that all of the favourites would be interiors-related – I’ve also had a great love-affair with a new Amazon Prime TV series this month –  I’m just throwing some examples out there. So what do you think? Death to the (exclusively) beauty favourites? Bring in a new era? Or are you change-averse?
(If you are incredibly change-averse then I do genuinely feel for you. 2020 is most certainly not your year.)
Let me know in the comments, please – I do love a spot of market research on here! But for now, on with the beauty favourites. I’ve mostly avoided skincare this month despite racking up a fair few new discoveries that were deserving of a big mention, and that’s because I’m judging the Marie Claire skincare awards. It would be slightly disingenuous to go shouting my mouth off about my favourites whilst others are still doing their solemn judging.
So two bodycare items, two makeup favourites and one thing that is skincare but not quite as you know it. Shall we start with that one? It’s called a ZitSticka and it’s a small patch infused with potent spot-fighting ingredients that you stick over an emerging or early-bird blemish. You know when you have that hard swelling beneath the skin and your heart sinks because you know it’ll take long and painful days to erupt into anything you can (illegally) squeeze?
That’s what these ZitStickas are aimed at. I actually did an ad for this product at the very start of the year, having used it over the Christmas zit period, but I’ve had a fairly spot-free spring and summer and so hadn’t needed them since. But boy did last month’s PMT week see a beauty of a boil! The perfect pustule to place a Sticka on and I was delighted to find that it worked just as well as at Christmas. From hard, red skin to…absolutely nothing.
The raised bump didn’t disappear completely overnight, I had to take the patch off in the morning and double-obliterate it with a second one, but after that it simply dispersed. No squeezing necessary, which was good as it’s a very bad thing to do with a hard and horrible spot like that.
The patches aren’t cheap (you can find them at Cult Beauty here*, they’re £27) but they are an excellent, excellent product to have in your skincare SOS kit. More info on them over on Cult*.
And to bodycare, where a Mitchum deodorant stole the show. On closer inspection, a “man’s” deodorant but I’m not really sure what makes it manly. The smell is “Cedarwood” but I find it fresh and figgy, which is why it’s in the faves (a good deodorant smell is hard to find), the formula is creamy, aluminium-free and effective.
True fact: to test efficacy I always do a half-half trial, whether it’s foundation, SPF or an exfoliating body lotion. You need to keep one half of your test area free from the product being tested – in this case it was so that I could gauge that day’s sweatiness with one pit and the sweat-fighting prowess of the anti-perspirant with the other.
It did well. The depths of the underarm were fresh even after a brisk walk down the river on a hot day wearing inadvisable levels of cashmere.
You can find Mitchum’s Natural Power deodorants here at Boots*, they are £4.50.
A seasonal favourite now, in the shape of Weleda’s Pine Bath. I know I’ve mentioned this a fair bit over the years and usually it’s more of a winter staple, but I ran out of Epsom Salts the other day (shock horror! fear not, I have reordered) and bathing just wasn’t bathing without something added to the water.
The Weleda bath milks are excellent – lavender would be my warmer months option but nothing beats pine for a bit of a Christmassy run-up. Again, I know I’m early – I’m not wishing Christmas upon anyone for the moment, the last thing we all need is another bloody school holiday! – but if you’re craving those crisp nights and blustery russetty days, this will be your bag.
Weleda Pine Bath Milk is £14 here*.
My next favourite is actually a whole category and so I’m going to sort of mulch over it – if you want more of an in-depth explanation of it then watch the video below. It’s mascaras. All mascaras. I’ve had a sort of renewed falling-in-love of them and have been testing out loads. I am going to be back with a video of my favourite four new mascara launches in the next week or so, but if you can’t wait that long then know that these are currently “the ones”:
Marc Jacobs At Lash’d Mascara, £25 here*
Charlotte Tilbury Push Up Lashes Mascara, £23 here*
Urban Decay Lash Freak Mascara, £21 here*
Dior Overcurl Mascara, £28 here*
All do things to my puny, barely-there lashes that would definitely win prizes, if there were prizes for lash transformations.
And finally another favourite that I’m not going to explain at length; it’s basically anything from Trinny London that counts as “makeup in pots”. In particular the cream eyeshadow in Truth and the cream blush in Electra. I’ve used both so regularly that it would be disingenuous for them not to make an appearance in the monthly hall of fame. You can read my full review of the eye2eye shadows here and the cream blush is online here*.
And there endeth the beauty sermon: it’s all on video right here if you want to see items up close and personal or find out about the makeup I’m wearing. Any extra details are written below the video pane. Enjoy – and let me know whether you’d like me to expand on my favourites categories!

Repeat after me, “You Can Never Be Overdressed Or Overeducated”, thank you Oscar Wilde. This quote is certainly true no matter the occasion, yet it does resonate in the time of quarantine and might bring you a dosage of comfort. This time is, to put it bluntly, a ‘kick you in the crotch spit on your neck fantastic moment’. Never thought I would combine a quote from Rachel Green with Oscar Wilde but here we are!
If like me, you love to vicariously live your life for a few days through prettily designed Pinterest quotes from dead famous people, then this one is perfect. Whether it’s dressing up in your finest and putting makeup on for dinner, or subscribing to a myriad of online courses and panic-ordering books on Amazon (because truly how long will this last for?) this quote can motivate you to boost both your mood and your brain.
Occasion wear is the new stay-in wear, how to be the best dressed in your living room
Truthfully, I am a little bit bored with fast fashion’s disingenuous attempt to shove loungewear down our throats. For instance, these are a few email subject lines and opening sentences I have received in the past few weeks:
“New Season Loungewear BACK IN STOCK”
“Cozy things From £5” – Facetime your girls, eat tacos in bed and play your records from start to finish.
“Welcome to the loungewear appreciation club”
“Latest in loungewear”
“Next level loungewear”
Okay, we are stuck at home, stop infiltrating my social media cookies.
But, I also get it, you also want to look chic and you want to be comfortable whilst.. well… lounging. With this in mind, I have compiled a few different moods and faux scenarios for you with clothes to match. Truthfully, other than work, I have nothing better to do, so my imagination has run wild!
Perhaps the most annoying thing that I find with this fast fashion loungewear is the use of unsustainable fabrics and repetitive styles quickly regurgitated to satisfy our insatiable demand. Now, I’m not saying that these clothes picks below contain sustainable fabrics, yet I think that they are way more wearable than said loungewear. These pieces are different as you can easily wear them after lockdown ends. Polyester, Acrylic and Nylon knitwear will inevitably shrink in the wash or will be peppered with splashes of hot tomato pasta sauce after precariously trying to eat your dinner on the sofa. Then, it will just end up in the bin and clog up landfill sites in the UK and overseas for hundreds and thousands of years.
The point is, as sometimes sustainable isn’t necessarily the most affordable, buy pieces that you know you will wear again and again, that like us have a life after lockdown (because that day will come!)
Choose silhouettes that emphasise comfort but also that are more sophisticated. From oversized shirts to palazzo pants and silky dressing gowns, I have selected smart stay in wear that will elevate your wardrobe.
So, although this lockdown may last for a while, don’t let your impact on this earth last longer!
For The Ordinary AHA 30% Skin Peel and Bowl of Pasta Wear
There is nothing quite as calming as a hot bath on a Sunday evening followed by a bowl of pasta the size of your head and a skincare routine. If you are becoming a derma baby, and you want to indulge in that vision of preening yourself in front of an immaculate glamorous vintage vanity set then this lockdown look is perfect: A chic soft and silky dressing gown.
I am biased, but One Hundred Stars do the best gowns! From delicate chinoiserie to botanical floral and vintage maps of your favourite cities, these delightful gowns are made out of the softest fabric, a combination of Modal and Viscose. I often wear my dressing gown just around the house anyway, and last summer I wore it with black trousers and a black rollneck to work or thrown over a bikini!
Linen gowns are also a great choice for the warmer weather, and this H&M Conscious collection piece promises sustainable sleepwear that soothes both you and the earth.

Night On The Sofa and Glass of Pale Rosé In Hand Wear:
Oversized linen and cotton shirts are a must for sophisticated soporific wear.I dream about pairing these cool, calm and collected shirts with darted wide-leg trousers, palazzo pants and, when the sun comes out, satin slip bias mini skirts. The sharp tailored pleats of the trousers, and the slick derriere skimming of the bias cut will provide the perfect contrast to the slouchy tucked or untucked shirt.
For the finishing final touches, accessorise with bright yellow Gold chains, baroque pearls and satisfying slick of red lipstick.
When choosing colour palettes for an overall ensemble, go for graduated tones of ecru, creams, beiges, greyages and latte. These will effortlessly melt and ooze together.

For Pacing Around Your Apartment Whilst On the Phone to Your Boss Wear:
I never have been one for sliders, but since spending all my time at home, I have come to appreciate the need for “house shoes”. As heady sun-drenched living rooms become the norm, slippers constitute sweaty and clammy toes – not the nicest. But if, like me, you have an affliction with your toesies being out all the time, comfortable sandals like these fluffy ugg sandals will keep you perusing around your home with ease. Available in a variety of cutesy pastel colours, these sandals are worth every penny.
For the Easy Mornings and Luxurious Nights
For me, a slip dress is ubiquitous with both comfort and luxury, two concepts that often go hand in hand or can be worlds apart.
The greatness of a slip dress is in the name itself, the way they just slip over your head and shoulders with ease. Plus, the way they are cut can accentuate your body and make you instantly feel good in yourself – what’s not to love? The lighter materials too are currently perfect for lockdown, keeping you cool in the warmer climates.
Although I am partial to cowl neck, I feel they have been slightly overdone. So, I think a deep v neck slip dress is equally as flattering and infinitely wearable.
The sweet cornflower blue of this Urban outfitters slip dress gives you a renewed sense of optimism and tranquility, and the lime hue is also perfect for dancing the night away with its zeal and fresh colour. What’s more, the chocolate brown option can easily transcend into autumn and winter
(When editing this piece I also found this slip dress in a pretty oyster shade too – a gift that just keeps on giving.)
This selection below from Pretty Lavish are also all great choices. The satin Piper maxi dresses are exceptionally elegant, yet they dance on the fine line of formal and smart casual. The tie-dye print of the apricot number invites flat sandals, and the cool mint hue of the other dress means you can easily wear her, at the discretion of your own confidence, in the day.

Online courses for pointless knowledge, career-boosting strategies or to learn for the sake of learning
So, I have been purposefully stringent in choosing clothes for this blog post, and believe me, it was hard. The reason why is because the second half is dedicated to learning – yes, learning.
I miss learning, I really do. I have always had a curious mind, divulging daily in documentaries, reading books or following history accounts on twitter just because I like a random fact popping up on my timeline. I enjoyed the large majority of my lectures, and for the most part, reading for essays at university (I found the writing really hard and abhorred it, but you can find out more about that in this blog post!).
Quarantine has made me think, okay how can I direct my energy into learning something new – whether its just pointless facts or it can strengthen my career. Because truthfully in future interviews, I might be asked what I like to do in my spare time, and drinking glasses of wine with friends and boyfriend might not cut the mustard.
I have recently started doing this Museum of Modern Art: Fashion as Design course which is super duper interesting. I’m only on week 3, but the course explores a 2017 exhibition of theirs called ‘Is Fashion Modern’ looking at staple garments like the plain white t-shirt or Nike Air force 1’s and looking at how these garments have made their cultural stamp and their history.
So, I have searched on Future Learn to find other free online courses that I am interested in and have shared them below in case they pique anyone’s interest. The online art platform Artsy has also written: “10 Art History Classes You Can Take Online For Free” .

Binu Binu’s Soaps Combine Korean Bathhouse Culture with Modern Design
The following post is brought to you by Squarespace. Our partners are hand picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.
In a day and age when looking after one’s mind and body is the ultimate in self care, Binu Binu is a brand of modern soaps inspired by the age old ritual of the Korean public bath. Like the spaces themselves, these soaps are based on the idea of daily ritual, intergenerational bonding, and the infamous Korean scrub treatment “Seshin,” an incredibly vigorous exfoliating treatment found at the baths. “Binu” means soap in Korean, and was chosen for its simplicity as well as the fact that it’s not an immediately recognizable word or associated with anything in the English language.
Binu Binu founder Karen Kim used Squarespace when launching their website to help create a beautiful online presence right from the start. The clean lines of their templates were in line with the brand she was beginning to form, and the other services the all-in-one platform offers would help build her business as it grew. We talked to her about Squarespace, Korean bathhouse culture, and why you might want to pick up one of their Scrub Towels!

Up until starting Binu Binu, Kim had been working in New York’s fashion industry with a focus on product development, editorial, and buying. Doing so gave her the opportunity to come to know so many brands and designers with fascinating stories who had created their own creative worlds, and it got her thinking.
“I got to the point where I just felt that it was the right time to create my own products and put them out there, as a way to share my vision with others. I think I always had an obsession with soap. One of my earliest childhood memories is of being scrubbed to the bone by my grandmother, watching what I thought were bruises disappear with just a bar of soap and determination. I thought it was magic.” she said.

“Later on, on a trip to Korea with my mother and aunts, we would visit the public bathhouses every day and I loved how it was contrary to North American spa culture – which seems focused on the self and the idea of luxury. The Korean bathhouse (“jjimjilbang”) was more about a communal, everyday wellness ritual that was social, intergenerational, and seemed to lack vanity and self-consciousness. I found that to be so refreshing and wanted to bring some of that mood to Binu Binu. To me, a bar of soap represents something universal, ancient, with the simple aim of becoming clean. So Binu Binu was born from the idea of a simplified soap and water routine (the opposite of the complicated 10-step skincare routines popular in K-beauty brands) as well as a celebration of Korean bathhouse culture,” Kim explained.

Once she decided to follow her passion for soap and culture, Kim dove right into the process of figuring out just what she wanted Binu Binu’s soaps to represent.
“Each soap starts with a story, and the formulation and ingredients flow from there. A lot of the inspiration for the collection comes from strong female role models in Korean culture. For example, the Haenyeo Sea Women are sea divers on Jeju Island who dive tank-free for the catch of the day. Many are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, and are still out there every day in the icy cold water. Because seafood is such a large part of the economy, Jeju is a matriarchal society led by these incredible women. Our Haenyeo Sea Woman Soap, an homage to these women, has sea salt, seaweed extract, refreshing peppermint essential oil and is a bluish grey color, like the water,” she shared.

“While doing a deep dive into the history of Korean cleansing and purification rituals, I learned about Shamans in Korea, women who perform purification rituals to cleanse the mind and body prior to conducting ceremonies to heal you of whatever ails you. It’s a practice that persists even today. So we developed a Shaman Black Charcoal Soap, inspired by the use of charcoal in these purification ceremonies. It’s our most popular soap,” Kim said.

Kim makes all of the various soaps by hand in their Toronto studio using the cold press method, which involves combining lye with oils and letting the mixture harden and cure for four to six weeks, to best retain natural oils known to benefit skin. The base of every batch contains “boricha,” the well-known Korean roasted barley tea. Every 100% natural bar is fragrance-free and does not contain palm oils, synthetic detergents, artificial colorants, parabens, sulfates, or animal products. So you know this is a product you can feel good about purchasing and using in a multitude of ways.

Of course Kim uses her own soaps, and has the other soap-related wares Binu Binu offers in her bathroom. Each product has been thoughtfully designed and put to the test to be both a functional and beautiful addition to your bathing space.
“I like to cycle through various soaps, whatever I’m in the mood for – lately it’s been our new Creamy Clay Complexion Soap. I absolutely love using clay in soap, as I find it adds a really nice richness to the lather as well as adding a beautiful color. The Hibiscus Clay Facial Soap is always a perennial favorite, since my skin can be somewhat dry the extra shea butter makes this really gentle and moisturizing,” she says of her favorites.

Of her other go-tos, Kim said, “My other must-have is our Seshin Korean Scrub Mitt and Towel. I love to exfoliate and this is just such a satisfying way to do it, where the results are immediate. A Korean scrub at the jjimjilbang is an amazing eye-opening experience. You leave feeling cleaner-than-clean and wondering how you could have ever walked around with so much extra baggage, so to speak. I became obsessed with the little cheap and cheerful neon-colored striped scrub mitts they use, so I designed an elevated, neutral-toned version for the line so you can scrub at home in the bath or shower. The towel version is to reach your back if you don’t always have a friend present to scrub it for you.”

When Binu Binu’s soaps are paired with their Marble Soap Dishes you can see just how well both complement one another. To create them Kim works closely with artisans who specialize in marble bath wares – everything from sinks to counters to full-on marble free-standing bath tubs. Together they design and develop the dishes, selecting the various stone varieties for each batch as they go.
“I love the combo of our Marble Soap Dishes with our soaps. Working with natural stones is endlessly fascinating, because each piece is truly unique and beautiful. The ones with swirl patterns that speak to me make their way into my own personal collection. I’m partial to the Blue Marble, a glossy teal with white and sepia tones that looks like the Earth from space, and the Green Onyx, which is translucent and almost ethereal – like it glows from within.”
You can’t help but be struck by each bar’s gorgeous angles and almost monumental aesthetic. It turns out that their sculptural qualities are just what drew Kim specifically to bar soaps in the first place.
She said, “I knew that I wanted to create a shape that was pared down, with clean edges and no extraneous details, but also something archetypal and iconic that wasn’t commonplace. Our bars can stand upright like a column, and can also fit perfectly in the hand. By shifting from a more ubiquitous flat rectangle to a monolithic shape, it turns an everyday object into a little sculptural object for the bathroom.”

We’re crazy about everything Binu Binu creates, so we asked Kim what’s on the horizon for the brand in the foreseeable future and what she’s most excited about.
She answered, “So many new things! One that we are most excited about is our biodegradable soap case for travel. It’s inspired by vintage designer soap cases, but modernized – definitely not something you would find in a drug store aisle. I think being able to simplify a toiletry bag is important. Instead of traveling with a million little bottles, you can pack a beautiful, discreet case (bonus: since the soap is solid, it’s TSA approved). It launches in October, just in time for the busy holiday travel season. Moving forward further into the future, our focus is on gradually building a world of modern bathhouse-inspired products that are also beautiful objects in and of themselves.”

Like many first-time business owners, Kim was less intimidated by Squarespace than other available options, which was a main factor in choosing them for Binu Binu’s website. Their abilities matched well with her burgeoning brand’s needs and left room to grow as a business, even offering tools that might help along the way.
“When I first started my business, I was drawn to Squarespace because it enabled me to effortlessly create an e-commerce site that was simple, yet considered design and functionality.  I found that I could customize as I go, which is important to any new business as its needs change. At first we started with the Galapagos template, and now we use the Pedro template. I appreciate the flexibility, ease, and clean design principles that Squarespace keeps in mind.”

Best independent shops in London
LONDON’S MOST QUIRKY AND CHARACTERFUL INDEPENDENT SHOPS ARE A JOY TO BROWSE
Like all big cities, London has a large turnover: many shops open and close every year, but in hardly any other metropolis will you find an equally high percentage of traditional family businesses that have existed for hundred years and more – from boot and hat makers to pie and mash shops; from producers of buttonholes to bell foundries.
Although London is one of the most important financial capitals in the world, Londoners are traditional at heart. They love to go to the same shops again and again. They also love all things old. Vintage shops, from fashion and antique furniture to architectural antiques, play an important role in English culture.
Innovative businesses, which sell new products or find new ways of distributing their goods, add their spice to the dish that is the independent shop scene. It is London’s ability to constantly reinvent itself while retaining a respect for tradition and continuity that makes it such an exciting city both to visit and to live in.
6 Best Independent Shops in London
Pentreath & Hall
Credit: Jason Ingram
The first things you notice upon entering Pentreath & Hall (previous page) are the beautiful white plaster casts. There is also a fireplace, a dresser with a lovely collection of crockery, and a colourful armchair that invites you to sit down, read a book or simply look at the nice things that are displayed throughout the shop.
For example, there are the lovely plaster casts made by master plaster caster Peter Hone, mostly reproductions from 18th-century casts. Pentreath & Hall also stock prints of 20th-century artists such as Eric Ravilious, beautiful stationery, and colourful resin lamps by Marianna Kennedy. The shop is a wild mixture of everything founders Ben Pentreath and Bridie Hall love – which is precisely why it feels just like the perfect living room. 17 Rugby St, Bloomsbury; www.pentreath-hall.com
Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop
Narrow stairs in Covent Garden Market lead up to Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop, which sells paper toy theatres and other traditional toys. These miniature stages go back to the Regency era. After seeing a play at the theatre, you could buy it as a paper model, which you could either paint yourself or buy hand-painted or printed. Later it often came in the form of a book, out of which the different parts were cut out and put together. Voilà – a private little theatre all of your own.
Over time this function was lost and theatres became children’s toys, but their fascination is still there. A Spanish theatre, a Victorian model or a tiny stage in a matchbox: a lot of the models can be put together in just half an hour. Others need a bit more time and patience. Go ahead, you’re the director: create your own play with paper.

Labour and Wait
Anyone who has not gone into raptures over household goods has never been to Labour and Wait. The shop doesn’t stock decorative items: everything here has a purpose. For owners Rachel Wythe-Moran and Simon Watkins, beauty and functionality go hand in hand; they sell both classics and future classics. Many customers come to the shop and immediately remember the round Duralex glasses they had in school. The Sussex trug dates back to the 1500s and customers might have seen them dangling on their grandmother’s arm while she harvested fruit or picked flowers. The lovely Welsh tapestry blankets are a mixture of old and new, inspired by old patterns but newly designed.
Several items are manufactured exclusively for the shop, such as the screwdriver made by a cabinet maker who couldn’t find the right tool, or the apron originally designed in-house for the shop’s staff. It became so popular that they now sell different versions of it. 85 Redchurch St, Shoreditch
D. R. Harris
…How did the 18th- or 19th-century gentleman freshen up? At that time, not even the rich bathed on a daily basis. A gentleman would thus attempt to avoid unpleasant smells by using perfumes or colognes distributed generously all over his body. Citrusy colognes fragranced with oranges and lemons were best suited to mask pungent body odours.
Harris’s Apothecary, founded by Daniel Rotely (D. R.) and Henry Harris in 1790, quickly gained a reputation among the gentry for its colognes and perfumes. Its location in St. James’s was convenient for serving customers from gentlemen’s clubs.
Still owned by the Harris family and operating from its historic St. James’s premises with its beautiful original interiors and the fragrance of oranges and lemons, the business has successfully blended tradition and innovation for the last two centuries. Today it sells soaps, perfumes and colognes, as well as skincare and shaving products, and holds two royal warrants. 29 St James’s St, St James’s; www.drharris.co.uk
Michael German Antiques
Arms and armour, walking canes or maritime works of art; what is your collecting field? Even if you don’t collect any of these things at present, you will probably change your mind after seeing all the interesting and unusual pieces in Michael German Antiques: beautiful crafted objects made by whalers when they were at sea; antique guns, swords and medieval armour; and walking canes, from a cane carried by Ralph Fiennes as Charles Dickens to a braying donkey cane.
The shop’s founder Michael German has been in the antiques trade for a long time, finally moving to Kensington Church Street in 1982. The shop is a collector’s Mecca that rarely advertises but will be found nevertheless by the discerning collector.
In the shop you will find canes from around 1860 to 1910. In the Victorian era canes were not used to aid walking; they were a dress accessory for ladies and gentlemen alike. For every new outfit you had to have a matching cane: an evening model refined with jewels or gold, an everyday one, and at the weekend a cane with a folk-art handle. A pity that we no longer walk with such elegant canes today – but at least you can collect them. 38B Kensington Church St, Kensington; antiquecanes.com
Persephone Books
Lamb’s Conduit Street in Bloomsbury has become known over the last few years as a hub for avant-garde men’s fashion. In the midst of this masculine cutting-edge-ness, Persephone Books is an island of dove-grey old-fashioned femininity, a sort of antidote to men’s fashion. It prints and sells books by forgotten or neglected mid-20th-century (mostly) female authors.
The first thing you notice about the shop is that everything is grey. The shop front is grey and when you cross the threshold, you will see that all of the books are grey too. They all have the same distinctive dove-grey jacket and cream label, but when you open them, the end-papers are all different and feature beautiful colours and patterns. They match the mood and date of the book in question and are sourced from fabrics of the time. Persephone Books now has 130 titles in print. Whatever your preferences, from poetry or ghost stories to diaries and cookery books, you’ll find something of interest. What dove-grey secrets would you like to unravel next? 59 Lamb’s Conduit St, Bloomsbury; www.persephonebooks.co.uk

25+ Decor Projects for Renters (Part 2)
Today, we’re back for round two of our renter-friendly DIY series! If you missed our first roundup, click here to see over 25 project ideas and tips.
This roundup is broken down into categories—specifically for each room in your home. And while these DIYs are great for renters, they’re also perfect for anyone who’s wanting to revamp their decor. Let’s start with the kitchen …Spring has finally sprung (all the praising hand emojis) and we’re feeling inspired to fill our homes with plants and start on outdoor projects. Indoor gardening can totally be a thing, too! If you love adding fresh herbs to your food (or cocktails), make a colorful herb garden for your kitchen.
Vintage stained glass windows are sooo cool. If you aren’t lucky enough to have one in your home (we’re jealous if you do!), you can make your own faux stained glass window using glass paint. Isn’t it pretty?
Onto the dining area—we love the texture these faux fur chair covers and cushions add to the room. If you’re in the mood for a budget-friendly change, you could also add some bright colored paint to your chairs like Elsie did here.
Adding a bar cart to your space isn’t just nice when you’re throwing a party, but it’s also to decorate with pretty glassware, bar accessories, and cool liquor bottles.
You can even make your own stamped liquor labels to make things extra fancy.
We added a cactus marquee sign to Kacey Musgraves’ living room (click here to see the full tour from a couple years ago! ) and we love how it turned out. Marquees look cool day or night. You could also prop this up on a mantel to avoid adding a shelf to the wall.
Adding new pillows to a sofa or accent chair can make a big difference when you’re itching for a change. This pillow is like a wall weaving except it’s way easier (and faster) to make.
Here’s another option using rainbow colored wool roving. Oooh!
Make a set of patterned curtains using plain, solid panels and fabric paint. If you want to do something a little different, you could even add pom poms. So easy!
Speaking of pom poms, adding a large basket to your living room to hold blankets, dog toys, etc., is a cute (and functional) way to keep things organized.
What did we do before removable wallpaper was around? It’s so versatile and can be used on furniture, walls, shelves, and stairs.
An area rug can help cover up carpeted floors and add dimension to any room. We love this static lines woven rug DIY. This one, too.
We love a good gallery wall, but we also like displaying family photos in different ways—like Emma did in her mineral photo display. Click here for five more ways to display photos around your home.
Get creative with your furniture. This vintage-inspired table set (can you believe they are DIY?) will hold plenty of glasses when guests come over. You can even add some decorative items to them—or a small lamp.
A cute coffee table that has added storage space? Even better. Love that acrylic top, too!Now let’s talk about bedrooms. If closet space is an issue (it almost always is, right?), a wooden clothing rack is an easy fix.
Here’s a kiddo version.
If your jewelry is in need of some serious organization, make a few personalized photo dishes. You could also use these to hold little perfume samples or other items in your bathroom.
Can’t decide what to add to your bedroom wall? Add a giant tapestry. This one only takes a few hours to complete, and it’s really big! This would be a good project to work on while listening to your favorite podcast.
Mirrors can make a room feel larger, and they’re a good solution if you need something to hang up on an accent wall (like Laura did here). How cute is this wooden pineapple mirror? Be sure to use command strips if you want to avoid putting nails in the wall.
Let’s talk about bathroom organization. This isn’t technically a DIY, but it’s such a good idea. Rachel used a plant stand to store her family’s bedtime essentials—like toothbrushes, face towels, and cups. But, you could store all kinds of toiletries (even skincare or makeup) in this. Click here to see more!
Speaking of skincare, if you’re wondering where to store your body scrub, bath salts, etc., this gorgeous bathtub caddy is such a perfect way to display them—even when you aren’t taking a relaxing bath.
We hope this roundup inspires you to make something for your home this weekend! xo. -The ABM Team
