What I Learnt From Going Back To College As An Adult
On the 18th of September, it will mark one year since I stepped through the doors of my local college, where I enrolled onto a 9 week fitness course.
I remember the morning well, it was a grey rainy September morning, as most ‘back to school’ mornings are, and it felt like I had been transported back ten years, as I stepped into the reception ready to pick up my student badge and find my class room.
My last dip into education was six years ago when I left university, it’s been eleven years since I left school, so going back to college (albeit just for nine weeks) was quite strange as an adult.
During those nine weeks of my college course, I feel like I learnt more about myself than I did on the course, and well today I thought I would write about that, as I never anticipated to go back to college as an adult.
My college course was to qualify as a fitness instructor, as last summer, I decided that I wanted to become some sort of personal trainer, I’m now not so sure about that, but hey, I have my level 2 qualification which means I could go on to train to be a PT if this whole blogging thing dries up.
So without further a do, here is what I learnt from going back to college as an adult.
I’m Not 17 Anymore
So this may sound weird, because of course I’m not 17 anymore, but I guess in my head, I still felt like I was. It seemed about five minutes since I was at college and I didn’t think a lot had changed. But from sharing a classroom with actual 17 year olds, I realised a lot has changed.
I’ve grown up, I’ve gotten older and I realised that at the age of 26, I had a completely different mindset and attitude to the younger people in my class. At first this shocked me, I thought I was ‘old’ but then I realised this is a natural thing and I don’t know why it was such a shock.
If anything, it made me appreciate how I have grown as a person over the past ten years, and I think I appreciate this new mindset and confidence that I now have.
2. You Can Do Anything If You Put Your Mind To It
I remember coming home from my first day at college (the rainy day) feeling like my brain was a big bowl of jelly. I hadn’t ‘learnt’ anything for a good six years, and having three hours of Anatomy and Physiology, made my brain go to mush.
I had a panic that evening that I wouldn’t be able to do the course, that I wasn’t clever enough, I wouldn’t be able to learn it, how did everyone else know where the tibia bone was?
However, I soon realised that if you work hard enough, your hard work will pay off, I spent hours revising the muscles of the body, drawing diagrams of the way blood pumps through the heart, and wrote up revision notes, and when it came to my exam, I got something like 46 out of 50 right, not bad for someone who couldn’t tell you much about the body four weeks previously.
I realised that if you put the work in, you can do it, I realised that spending hours learning paid off, I’d taught myself all this stuff and I wasn’t stupid, or dumb, because I’d shown myself I could do it.
It made me realise that you can do this with anything in life, and it’s never too late to learn new stuff.
3. My Mindset To Work Has Changed
If I could have summed up my mindset to work when I was younger, it would probably be ‘cba.’
I could have always tried harder, I was bright but a pretty average student, never aimed for A’s, just did what I could.
These days, I feel it’s a different story, and I hadn’t realised that till I went back to college.
I realised I’ve become super organised, I like to do my homework the night I get it (square of the year award over here) and I always want to try my best, work hard and try to come top.
Basically I have become incredibly competitive, but mainly I just want the best for myself.
I do wish I’d had this mindset when I was younger, but hey it’s better late than never.
4. It Gave Me More Confidence
At the end of my nine week course, I emerged not only a qualified fitness instructor, but a more confident person.
I learnt a lot about myself and realised that I was more capable, clever and sociable than I thought.
Although I haven’t done much with my qualification (yet) I do feel like doing the course was valuable for me as a person and it really did help me to learn some stuff about myself, and give myself a bit of credit.
I’d recommend for anyone to do a college course, it never hurts to add another string to your bow, and you may learn some interesting things about yourself like I did.
Please let me know if you’d like a post all about my course with a bit more detail about what I learnt, how I got onto it, etc… as I’d also be more than happy to write about that!
But I hope you found this interesting, and I’d love to know if you’ve ever gone back to education as an adult?

Step Your Selfie Game Up, Sis!
Click, click, click… just think of the continuous camera shutter famously heard in the scene transitions on Scandal. Remember that show? A throwback, I know.
Moving on.
If you’re anything like me, you take 20-50 pictures of the same makeup look and outfit to then spend 1 hour sorting through and editing the best ones. But, in the meantime, stick with me while I break it down for you. Perhaps you take 100 pictures and delete every last one of them because you hate the way they came out. Then you scroll on Instagram and lament over how bomb everyone else’s selfies look in comparison to yours. Well, let me help you solve this issue. Whether you hate selfies or are running out of photo storage on your phone, I promise you want to keep reading! There are 6 key reasons why you’re probably frustrated with the selfies you take.
Tip #1: Angles
You need to hit the right angles! Three of my favorite angles are:
Angle 1 – camera held high and head angled downward,
Angle 2 – Looking away and laughing (this can be done with the camera held high or below your chin).
Angle 3 – looking away, but the camera is rotated 180 degrees to look a little different.
Try it out, you just may find that it works for you! Remember practice makes perfect, so practice your poses so that when you’re ready to take a picture, you know how to position your face, neck and shoulders.
Tip #2: Lighting
Where you take your pictures is important. Why? Because you need to ensure that the light is hitting your face. The key is that the light must be on your face, not behind you. If you’re standing outside, ensure that the sun is on your face. Oh, and remember to tap your phone to make sure that you’re in focus — blurry pictures are not going to get a double tap sis! This tip goes for pictures taking inside, as well. Do you notice the subtle difference (lighting) in the pictures above? The key here is that a well-lit face is much more flattering!
Tip #3: Your Pose
You may be wondering what the difference is between the angle and the pose. Don’t worry, I’ll explain! The angle refers to how you hold your camera or phone. Now your pose that’s all about how you position yourself – face, shoulders, hands, etc. Confused? In the words of Lauryn Hill “Let me break it down for you a bit…”Think of it this way, let’s say your favorite pose is with your head tilted slightly to the left with a soft smile. You can hold this pose while changing the angle of your phone. You can also hold the camera in one angle and each time you snap but move your pose – head left, head right, eyes down with smile, eyes open looking away with closed mouth — when you work your angles and pose just right it’s pure magic!
If you want to slay your selfie, pose in a way that’s most flattering for you. Angle your camera up to make your face look slimmer (referring to the angle, again). Then give the camera a “Tyra-smize” if you’re going for a flirty look (referring to your pose). You may choose to part your lips, smile, keep a straight face, look down, look directly at the camera, and more. The options are endless. Below are a few examples of the same pic, with three poses that have just a subtle difference to them.
Once you’ve figured out a few poses that work for you, stick with them! There’s no need to reinvent the wheel.
Tip #4: Clean Your Camera Lens
Before taking any photos with your cell, you absolutely must use a Qtip and clean the lens. If you’re out and about, wipe your lense on the underside of your shirt or dress. Why? You’d be surprised to know how much bacteria and oil gets stuck on your camera from placing the camera to your ear to talk. The bacteria and oil on your camera lens means your photo is going to come out blurry. You don’t want that to happen!
Tip #5: Editing
Who doesn’t edit their pictures these days?! Come on sis not even a little? Whether you edit a little or a lot, do you! But, these days, you’d be remiss if you haven’t figured out the blessing that is Facetune. You can use Facetune to whiten the white part of your eyes, your teeth, smooth skin imperfections, add detail to your eyeshadow and much more! Even if you just edit to make a dark photo brighter it will make a huge difference in the quality. Want to know what apps I use to edit, check out this YouTube Video.
Tip #6: Confidence
Taking a bomb selfie is impossible unless you believe in yourself. You’ve got to have confidence, even if you have to pretend until it feels natural! Take your pics when no one is around (if you’re shy) and channel your fun-loving alter-ego in order to slay the pic, sis. Without confidence, your selfie won’t be the best that it can be.
Which of these tips is the most surprising to you – one that didn’t even occur to you until just now? I want to hear from you!

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes Hinted at a New Collaboration
It’s been three years since Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes released their epic duet, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and now it seems they might be heading back into the studio together.
On Wednesday, December 5, both musicians hinted at a renewed partnership with one adorable black-and-white photo showing them sitting on the floor together, Camila with an acoustic guitar in hand (and possibly singing) and Shawn facing her. They both shared the picture on Instagram, and Camila also shared it on Twitter; in both her posts, she captioned the image “Canadian fury + Latin sass.” And if the snapshot wasn’t enough to convince people of a new joint venture (after all, Camila and Shawn are good friends, so it’s possible they were just playing music in an unofficial capacity), their comments on Shawn’s Instagram post were very telling.
“IKWYDLS part 2????” Camila commented, using the acronym for their 2015 single. Shawn seems to have confirmed this with his response: “IKWYDLS PART 2!!!!”
Neither artist has shared more details since, but what they did post was enough to send fans into a flurry of excitement. “THEY ARE WRITING A SONG!!! YES THEY WILLLLLLLL,” one fan commented on Camila’s twitter post. “IT’S CONFIRMED WE’RE GETTING #IKWYDLS2 HOLD ON TO YOUR WIGS BYEEEEE,” another posted.
Others were a bit more cautious in their celebrations, wanting to be sure this news is the real deal, especially after Shawn Mendes denied to Capital FM that the two were collaborating again after reportedly being spotted in Nashville at the same time in September. “THEY BETTER NOT BE MESSING WITH US MY HEART CANT HANDLE THIS,” one Twitter user wrote.
Until Camila or Shawn explicitly confirm the news, all we can do is hope...and listen to their original hit on repeat.

How to Style Your Natural Hair, According to Issa Rae's Hairstylist Felicia Leatherwood
Getty ImagesKatie Collins - PA Images
Since the day I decided to break up the "creamy crack" (relaxer), I spent years switching between every protective style you can think of—box braids, Senegalese twists, cornrows, and weaves—to avoid having to deal with taking care my natural hair. Then, college happened, and spending $150-$200 at the hair salon every other month didn't quite fit within my $2-pizza-slice-for-dinner college-girl budget. So I took the plunge and wore my natural hair for a few months (fall semester, which, I should note isn't the best weather for natural hair), and even dyed it brown for some added oomph.
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
I can't even begin to count how many natural hair videos I watched on YouTube at the time in the hopes of finding fresh, quick styles. After months of failed twist-out attempts, countless nights of falling asleep without actually twisting my hair (I prefer the lazy-girl routine), and lots of breakage from lack of care, I came to one sad conclusion: I didn't know what I was doing. I went back to protective styles without hesitation.
But in October 2016, HBO premiered Insecure starring Issa Rae, a comedy series chronicling the life of a modern-day black woman and the beauty and flaws that come with that label. I was in awe of Issa's character, not only because I finally saw someone on the big-screen that looked like me, but because she unabashedly embraced her natural hair in a way I was so desperately trying to do. Frohawks, braided crowns, side cornrows, and more unconventional styles adorned Issa's head throughout the season. "How on earth does she come up with all these different styles?" I thought to myself. Well, she owes it all to Felicia Leatherwood.
"I met Issa Rae about five years ago at a dinner and we ended up sitting next to each other," the celebrity hairstylist told ELLE.com. "I gave her my business card and told her to give me a call if she ever needed help with her natural hair. She made that call and I've been working with her ever since."
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
Leatherwood cut her teeth in hair styling as a braider in her local community in Los Angeles, but after developing an allergy to perm relaxers, she decided to learn about caring for her own hair. Now, she's helping other women to do the same.
"If you have beautiful natural hair, why give money to someone else when you can learn to work with it?"
"No one understood my hair," she added. "I have women who say, ‘Hey Felicia, I don’t know what to do with my natural hair,’ and I have this platform to help you all figure it out, so it was important for me to take the opportunity to use it so women won't feel the need to spend so much money on wigs. I’m trying to help women understand that wigs should only be an option, like if you’re in the entertainment industry where your hair is constantly being manipulated or you’re experiencing something medical like alopecia. If you have beautiful natural hair, why give money to someone else when you can learn to work with your own natural hair?"
Ahead, Felicia Leatherwood breaks down the best way to style your natural hair, regardless of what stage you're in.
Stage 1: Buzzcut, Big Chop, Teeny-Weeny Afro (TWA)
So you've decided to undergo a big chop and restart your natural hair journey. No worries: curling creams and gels will be your best friend. "Don't think about the hair too hard, you kind of have to let it do its thing," Leatherwood advises. "If you want to define your curls, reach for a curling cream or gel and work in the product in little by little. You want to work in small sections and massage the product onto your scalp so it can seep into the cuticle."
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
For TWA and tapered cuts like Taraji P. Henson's (above), Felicia recommends a detangling brush to help coat your strands with the product and separate and lift the strands to increase definition. "Your finger can really go through and define all of your hair, but the brush can get to all the strands," she says.

Stage 2: Short to Medium-Sized Afro
"If you go to seasons two and three of Insecure, you’ll see how much Issa’s hair has grown, right down to her chin. But shrinkage is a huge hurdle," Felicia says. One way to combat shrinkage? Clip-ins. "It affords you some volume and length but still lets your hair be free, not completely covered. Clip-ins also allow you to play with style," she continued. "You can do fro-hawks, up-dos, cornrows. I also like to play with those afro-ponytail puffs."
Felicia also suggests protective styling because it "gives you your time back—you can sleep a little longer in the morning and take vacations without having to worry about what you’re going to do with your hair." She continued: "People forget that when you put your hair in a protective style, it's the best time to care of the scalp because the scalp is easier to get to. Oil your scalp and use all your growth products!"

Kinkistry shop.kinkistry.com $115.00
Stage 3: Bra-Length/Shoulder-Length
At this point, many woman achieve their desired lengths but tend to stick to wash-and-gos or twist outs. According to Felicia, this stage is the perfect time to play with accessories and really test your hair's versatility. "I like look at straight hairstyles and turning them into textured hairstyles," she says. "Yes, you can do twist-outs so your hair can hang loose but high-ponytails, especially with a few cornrows or little gold accessories can add to any look. I feel like whatever can be done with straight hair can be also be done with textured hair."

Stage 4: Back-Length
"Doing twist-outs in your hair regularly gives you the perfect amount of curl definition. Let your hair can hang loose, let it do its thing!" she suggests. "But please don't forget to deep condition! Women get to a certain length and just put their hair in a ponytail and leave it alone but you have to condition at twice a month. You can leave it on for 15 minutes or even overnight if you need major hydration."

Operatic Decadence at Comme des Garçons
PARIS, France — Virginia Woolf’s novel “Orlando” is the story of an Elizabethan poet who changes from a man to a woman, and goes on switching genders for centuries, a consummate self-creation with no fixed identity. It was published in 1928, but its cultural resonance has blossomed with the passing of time, for obvious reasons. It was a favourite of Karl Lagerfeld’s. Tilda Swinton played Orlando in Sally Potter’s 1992 film adaptation of the book, which is why she could be found playing Orlando once again at Lagerfeld’s memorial on Thursday.
Then Orlando re-emerged on Saturday, in a twist of fashionable fate, at Rei Kawakubo’s show for Comme des Garçons. The designer offered more detail than usual about her latest work. Apparently, it’s the first act in a three-act drama. The second will be the Comme des Garçons women’s show in September. The third will be the world premiere of Olga Neuwirth’s opera “Orlando” at the Vienna State Opera in December, with costumes by Kawakubo.
It is easy to see the appeal for the story for her. “Transformation and liberation through time,” was the phrase she offered as insight into her new collection. Born in the 16th century, Orlando touches down throughout history till the very day of the book’s publication in October 1928 (a very artful piece of cross-promotion by Woolf and her publisher).
The Comme collection similarly skittered across time zones: 16th century infanta sleeves, 18th century striped ruffles and petticoats, Victorian rectitude, governess-y Edwardian elongation, ending with the profligate Internet Age: digital prints and a Perfecto wrapping a dress covered with memories of Maui. Strings of pearls and gemstones were printed on T-shirts. Fakes – the end of history. The models got a little friskier, like they’d shrugged off the propriety of the past, which throughout the presentation had been defined by their actual pearl necklaces and their tidily marcelled hair. (That would have been the mode of the moment when Woolf’s book first appeared.)
All of these details being part of a men’s collection seemed so appropriate to “Orlando” that you were inclined to wonder whether Kawakubo wasn’t testing out ideas for the opera. But they were also in keeping with her regular challenges to fashion orthodoxy and her appetite for transgression. Here, an oily quilted jacket over a crocheted top or a dark brocade trailing threads was less suggestive of menswear — or womenswear, for that matter — than a faded aristocracy, operatic in its decadence.
The dying fall…it’s camp, and, only last season, Kawakubo was expressing her fondness for that idea as a different energy. Vincent Glanzmann provided a soundtrack of live, jazzy drumming, into which he inserted the jaunty swing of “If You Never Fall in Love with Me” by Carmen McRae. “I’m not the girl I was before, ‘cause now you own my heart forever more,” she sang. That’s the reason Virginia Woolf wrote “Orlando,” because Vita Sackville-West was breaking her heart. Thank you, Rei Kawakubo, for reminding us that some things never change.

Maisie Williams Describes a Lonely Ending for Arya on <em>Game of Thrones</em>
Now that the Game of Thrones cast has wrapped up filming the final season, the end is starting to feel real. Earlier this week, Peter Dinklage hinted at a grim ending for Tyrion Lannister when describing his character's final scenes to Vulture.
In a new interview with The Guardian, Maisie Williams described her own final scene in the upcoming Season 8.
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
“I ended on the perfect scene,” she said. “I was alone – shocker! Arya’s always bloody alone. But I was alone and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill, I had seen the tears and heard the speeches.”
Now, we know from Dinklage's interview that the scenes aren't filmed in order. So, Williams' final scene might not Arya's final scene. Here, it's unclear if she's actually referring to her character's final scene, her own final scene, or both.
If this is her final scene, why exactly is Arya alone? We last see her in Winterfell with her sister, but what could happen in between then and the finale to where she ends up alone?
Certainly, if it is a happy ending, one would imagine Arya would finally be with her siblings after defeating the White Walkers. This calls to mind a final scene of Arya walking off into the sunset or, even worse, dying alone. Or, more realistically, she travels back to Braavos where she had done her training with the Faceless Men.
Anyhoo, this is all wild speculation, and is probably not going to happen at all. But, what we do know of the final season so far is that at one point Arya will be alone and things probably won't be happy for Tyrion. And that's more than nothing, at least, right?

Jennifer Lawrence’s New Dior Ad Is Being Accused of Cultural Appropriation
Dior is under fire for a new campaign that purportedly aims to celebrate Mexican culture. There’s just one problem: It stars Jennifer Lawrence, a white actress who does not have any Mexican heritage. The Dior Cruise 2019 collection was supposedly influenced by escaramuzas — traditional, highly skilled Mexican horsewomen — and the female characters from The House of the Spirits, the classic debut novel from Chilean writer Isabel Allende. But many were quick to point out that the campaign was noticeably lacking representation from actual Mexicans.
The French fashion house shared a video from the campaign in which Jennifer is seen wandering and contemplating her way through some type of rustic, ranch-like environment. All the while, mysterious voices whisper as dramatic music plays in the background.
In another video, Jennifer is interviewed about the collection and shares her excitement for it. “One of the main inspirations for this collection is the traditional women riders of Mexico,” she says. “So I’m really excited that this collection is looking at and celebrating these women’s heritage through such a modern lens.”
In the comments, many people wondered if “modern lens” means without the inclusion of Mexican people, how much of a celebration can it really be? The video garnered hundreds of comments that basically asked this same question. One person wrote that they couldn’t believe Dior had “the audacity to feature a white model for the face of a Mexican culture inspired line.” Someone else asked, “So there are no Mexican actresses to represent a Mexican inspired collection?”
In the interview, Jennifer also reveals that they shot the campaign in California. “I can’t think of a better landscape to highlight this collection,” she says.
Phoebe Robinson, a comedian and cohost of the podcast "2 Dope Queens," shared her feelings about the situation on Instagram. She, too, wondered why Dior didn’t shoot in Mexico with a Mexican actress.
“And like they couldn’t think of a better landscape to shoot than in California?!” Phoebe says. “Hmm, I dunno, maybe...like...shoot...in...Mexico...with...a...Mexican...actress like Salma Hayek, Karla Souza, Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez, Eva Longoria, or many others. But I guess they were all unavailable, so you had to go with Jennifer Lawrence. The audacity to call this shit modern because it’s worn by a white woman is ignorant and gross, but unfortunately, not surprising.”
Phoebe then asked her followers to leave comments tagging Mexican designers who should be recognized for their work. Some suggestions included Maria Vogel, Entredós, and Carlos Pineda.

The Two-Second Hack Zoë Kravitz Uses When She Gets a Breakout
Celebrities' skin aren't always as perfect as they appear — underneath the foundation, they're just real people who get zits like you and me. And according to Zoë Kravitz, celebs get just as bummed out about a breakout as the rest of us.
To celebrate her debut as the face of YSL Beauty's Black Opium fragrance, Kravitz sat down with Refinery29 and talked all things related to breakouts.
"I get bummed when my skin breaks out," the Big Little Lies star shared. "It really affects my mood and my confidence. Obviously, it happens to everyone and it's fine, but I really try to keep it under control. If I have a pimple and I know I have a shoot coming, I start to panic."
When a blemish appears, Kravitz says she reaches for the Hollywood favorite YSL Touche Éclat brightening concealer.
"Everything else is important, but the most important thing is for skin to look dewy and even," she says. "I like that it's really sheer. It's more about balancing things out and brightening things up, as opposed to actually covering. If you slept at someone's house and woke up in the morning, that's [the product] you'd want."
Of course, we'd recommend that she first cleanse her face and then apply a spot treatment — preferably one spiked with acne bacteria-killing benzoyl peroxide, like the Glossier Zit Stick — before covering up the breakout with concealer, but we'll let it slide this one time.

Can the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Prove It's Not Obsolete This Year?
More than two years ago I stood in the Barclays Center cringing as Steve Miller blasted the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at his own induction ceremony. In his acceptance speech, he called out the Hall of Fame for having, at that time, fewer than 14 percent women among its ranks. He then got heated with the HOF staff backstage telling one employee trying to stop his critique: "No, I'm not going to wrap it up, how about I wrap you up." N.W.A. didn't even perform at its own controversial induction ceremony.

That disastrous ceremony, marked a pivotal decline in the credibility of this once hallowed institution. Leading up to it, area asshole—and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member—Gene Simmons had blasted the institution for its inclusion of rap music.
Since then, it has continued to flounder. In 2017, Radiohead was nominated in its first year eligible. Before the band eventually didn't make the cut, guitarist Ed O'Brien told me, "If I’m honest I don’t understand it. It’s just kind of a British person going, 'Okay, thanks, what does this mean?' It’s a little bit thin on black artists and hip-hop artists."
And neither Steve Miller nor O'Brien are wrong. Throughout its history, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has curated a list that's predominately white guy, boomer guitar bands. It's an institution that's oblivious to modern sounds, diverse genres and women and non-binary musicians. It's a non-representative and bland collection of music.
To its credit, in the years since I attended the ceremony, it has inducted Tupac Shakur, Joan Baez, and Nile Rodgers. Last year, Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe were given honors. But their inclusion is largely outweighed by the inclusion of Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam, Yes, Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, and The Moody Blues—some of which have already been forgotten by time.

This year, Devo, Roxy Music, Stevie Nicks, Todd Rundgren, John Prine, and Def Leppard have all been nominated for the first time. Meanwhile, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Janet Jackson, the Cure, Kraftwerk, MC5, Rufus & Chaka Khan, LL Cool J, and the Zombies have been nominated once again.
Here, there's a chance for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to include diverse genres and recognize women. But will it? Certainly Nicks has a strong chance of making it in, since she's already in the Hall of Fame with Fleetwood Mac. LL Cool J, Janet Jackson, and the Zombies could make it on their second try. But, it's more like the HoF to favor the likes of John Prine or Def Leppard.
It's also telling who didn't even get a nomination this year: OutKast, Fugees, the Roots, and Snoop Dogg—all of whom are eligible for the first time this year. Additionally, previous nominees omitted from this year’s list include Kate Bush, Nine Inch Nails, the Smiths, the Replacements, Depeche Mode, Bad Brains, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Eurythmics, and Gram Parsons.
There's a chance for the Hall of Fame to at least take a step toward representing an actual cross-section of American music. Or, it can continue it's rapid descent into irrelevancy.

5 Simple Bridal Self-Care Rituals to Unwind + Energize
Take a deep breath. Go on, try it. Now — can you remember the last time you stopped to just breath? Planning a wedding can be so consuming that those simple, human necessities can all too easily slip away. Deep breaths, long baths, hydrating your body and giving yourself those small yet gratifying moments that you probably need now more than ever.
We know not every bride can schedule in a weekly massage or make it to yoga every morning (cheers to those who can!), so today we’re focusing on 5 simple rituals that you can do at home. Five things to make you feel more you. To combat the stress that threatens to dry out your skin, darken those undereye circles, bloat the belly, and overwhelm your mind. These easy routines will help you feel well rested, well hydrated, and overall more like your best self for the big day to come. Take care, loves. We give you permission.
The gorgeous photos below are by the stunning Elizabeth Messina! We don’t blame you if the images alone – I mean, how comfy do those Bella Notte linens look?! – are enough to help you zen out :)
Daily Ritual: Amp up Your Hydration Game
WHY: In case you need a reminder of the benefits of hydration, let this long list motivate you to reach for the H20: proper hydration keeps your skin plump and glowing; helps your muscles fight fatigue, helps your kidneys function correctly to rid your body of toxins, keeps your bowels working properly (bye-bye bloat!) and helps brain function to strengthen cognitive function and memory. source, source
HOW: So, how much should you drink in a day? Harvard suggests a simple solution of 2-3 cups per hour for most people, more if you’re sweating or working out. Water is the best option for hydration, but this is you we’re talking about, and you deserve something a little special. We say, fancy it up with some infused water. Simply chop up some cucumber, mint, citrus, or whatever is in season and let your water absorb those spa-like properties. Amazon has an adorable rose gold fruit infuser water bottle so you can take it to go!
TRY IT: This recipe for detox infused water is a favorite. Or, try a morning beauty tonic! We’re fans of Bali’s famous turmeric + ginger elixir, Jamu, an anti-inflammatory healing drink that’s delicious hot or cold: here’s a recipe. Glow on, sister.
///
Weekly Ritual: Unwind with an Infused Bath
WHY: Hop in a warm bath and let the stress melt away. Honestly — it’s proven! Submerging in warm water produces feelings of calm and ease, diminishing anxiety and pessimism. A warm bath before bed produces melatonin to helps you sleep better, soothes achy muscles, and can do wonders for tired skin when infused with the right ingredients.
TRY IT: Draw a warm bath (not too hot) and soak for 15-20 minutes with some of our favorites tried and true infusions:
For achy muscles: Add 2 cups of Dr. Teal’s Lavendar Epsom Salts.
To soothe dry skin: Add 10 drops of rose essential oil to either a carrier oil (jojoba, olive, or coconut) or 1 cup Epsom salt; Draw the bath before adding mixture then give it a stir before getting in.
Because you deserve it: Throw in some few dried botanicals, grab a treat, and soak up that alone time!
///
Bi-Weekly Ritual: Love Your Skin with a Simple Face Mask
WHY: Because face masks solve all problems, don’t you know?! But seriously, there is something that makes you feel on top of that to-do list when you put on a face mask. You could always grab a sheet mask on your next Target run or mix some apple cider vinegar with Aztec Healing Clay, but we’re talking simple + at home remedies here. And you can find our go-to right there in your pantry.
HOW: It’s honey! If you haven’t read up on the skincare benefits of honey, prepare to be amazed. Honey is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and gently nurturing like the best hug. The low pH balance means that bacteria can’t survive, which translates to an environment where acne is a thing of the past. It’s moisturizing, it’s great for sensitive skin — honey can do no wrong. source
TRY IT: First, make sure you have the highest quality raw honey you can find/afford. Pick some up at your local farmers market or grab some manuka honey online. Splash your (makeup free!) face with a little water to make the honey easier to spread. Next, spread 1-2 teaspoons across your face and neck. Let the honey mask sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off. Lock in the moisture with a your favorite moisturizer or sweet almond oil.

Nightly Ritual: Get Your Beauty Sleep
WHY: We all know a good night’s rest is important and beneficial to the mind, body, and soul. But you’re planning a wedding, here! So, chances are that while your body and soul may be ready to call it a day, that mind of yours could have other plans.
HOW: The good news? There are a number of ways to shut your brain off and win the battle. From meditation apps to quick yoga routines.
TRY IT: Here are a few quick tips to get your entire self ready for a rejuvenating night’s sleep!
Make the rule and follow it: your bed is only for sleeping! Keep the room temperature cool and the lighting as dark as possible. Avoid screens 1-2 hours before bedtime to prepare your brain and eyes for the rest to come.
Get Calm: Download the Calm app for breathing exercise and guided meditations to help you sleep and mix some Natural Vitality Calm (aka the anti-stress drink) into a glass of water to get your daily intake of magnesium.
Try this 7-minute bedtime yoga flow from one of our favorite instructors, Adriene Mishler of Yoga with Adriene.
Treat yourself and invest in bedding that you LOVE! (The dreamy linens you see here? They’re from Bella Notte!) Bella Notte’s brand director Taylor (who is also the founder’s daughter!) shares this quote with us about how her bedding was essential to a good night’s sleep before her wedding, “Leading up to my wedding, I knew one of the biggest gifts I could give myself was a good night’s sleep. I piled my bed with soft down pillows and a billowy duvet, and our Madera Luxe sheets–they’re buttery soft and also sustainable, so I felt great every time I climbed in. Curling up in my sheets every night, bedroom window flung open to let in cool, fresh air, is still my favorite way to fall asleep!”
///
Daily Ritual: Be Present by Calling on Gratitude
WHY: Gratitude helps you to pinpoint the goodness in your life. Maybe your florist calls to say peonies are a no-go, or your seamstress didn’t get it quite right, or your venue fell through at the last minute. We ALL know that wedding planning comes with both expected and unexpected stresses. But at the end of the day, you’re preparing to spend your life with your person. Call on gratitude to refocus on what you have and where you are, rather than what you lack.
TRY IT: There are several ways to practice gratitude on a daily basis. We won’t lie — it can be hard at first. But, like working a muscle, it gets easier with time. You’ll find yourself focusing in on what you’re thankful for quicker and with more precision.
Make a list: Keep a journal or note on your phone and jot down 1-3 things you’re thankful for each day.
Send a note: Thank-you notes can feel like a chore when you’re planning a wedding, but once you sit down to write a meaningful message you’ll find its one of the greater joys in the process.
Pray or meditate: Spend time giving thanks for your relationships, for warm weather, for coffee — whatever it is that makes your life happy!

One more deep breath, now…you got this.

Vanessa Hudgens Had a Fight With Then-Boyfriend Zac Efron While Filming "High School Musical"
More than a decade ago, Gabriella and Troy found love onscreen in the High School Musical series, and so did costars Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron (aka Zanessa) IRL. The two, now long broken up, were together for five years (most of them simultaneous to the HSM franchise), and it turns out their relationship did kind of influence filming — positively and negatively.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter, Vanessa opened up about her romance with Zac and the challenges both actors faced by being romantically involved with a costar, revealing they actually had a fight on the set of the Disney Channel Original Movie.
“I remember one time we did have a fight, and it was while we were at rehearsals,” Vanessa admitted. “I remember Kenny Ortega coming around the corner with the most concerned look on his face like, ‘Oh no, is our movie going to fall apart right now?’”
In spite of the small setback, though, the pair managed to keep their cool, because truly the show must go on. “I pride myself on being a professional, so I was like, that aside we are going to move forward and do what we need to do… and we sorted it all out,” Vanessa told the interviewer.
Vanessa also revealed she was genuinely “grateful” about those Zanessa days on the HSM set, saying the pair actually “created a bond right from the start” during castings.
“It started off really organically. I could not have been more grateful to have that relationship at that time,” she admitted, adding, “We kind of blew up. It was this massive phenomenon all of a sudden and eyes were on me. And it’s just a really weird foreign thing to go through, and by being in a relationship, I feel it kind of kept me stabilized and grounded, and I had someone to lean on who was going through it as well.”
Arguments in relationships are completely normal, and this surely is water under the bridge for Vanessa and Zac, who have both since moved on — Vanessa, for example, has been dating actor Austin Butler since around 2011.
And, hey, Zanessa might not have been endgame, but at least we’ll soon have a new High School Musical series to celebrate.

In the Dunes House
Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the Ayla Golf Academy and Clubhouse becomes a park of Jordan's Aqaba desert. The structure created by Oppenheim Architecture mimics the neighboring dunes with a wavy roofline. To further integrate the exterior into the scenery, the curved concrete shell is tinted with a matching, sandy hue. The building serves the country's first signature golf course — an 18-hole, Greg Norman design with practice grounds, putting greens, and two indoor swing studios. Inside the rolling mounds, the complex also offers shops, restaurants, a bar, fitness center, and spa.

Lush Announces Bath Bomb Inspired by Ariana Grande's "God Is a Woman" Music Video
Ariana Grande's "God is a Woman" music video is iconic for many reasons — but especially for the shimmery pool of pastel waters that Ari twirls in while she sings about her immortal powers. Now, thanks to a new bath bomb by Lush called "Goddess," you can experience your own heavenly transformation from the comfort of your tub.
According to Lush, the glistening bath bomb will take your self-care routine to the next level with soothing notes of jasmine, osmanthus, and rose oil, all while enveloping your skin in the moisturizing powers of cocoa butter, shea butter, and argan oil. OK, I'm drooling over how incredible this sounds. From the looks of the bath bomb itself, the rich ingredients dissolve into the water to flawlessly recreate the lavender, pink, and cerulean waves painted onto Ariana herself by artist Alexa Meade in the music video. SO. FREAKING. MAGICAL.
Lush CDO and product inventor Jack Constantine started working on the prototype in July after a fan tweeted the idea, much to Ariana's delight, who responded on the thread, "omg @lushcosmetics i'll do anything." After months of perfecting the pristine formula, the Goddess bath bomb will be available in North America in stores and online on November 22...and hopefully we'll get to see Ari's reaction when she tries it out for herself.
For just $8.95 a pop, the all-vegan formula is the perfect antidote after a long day at school or work. Yes, God is a woman — and now, any Ariana stan can be a Goddess.
