2024 Top 8 F1 Drivers//2024 Albums

Max Verstappen- ‘brat’ by Charli xcx

There was no other choice. Max is brat. From the team radios to the swearing fiasco to Interlagos (even the baby announcement!), he has truly embodied every aspect of this album this year. Also ‘Von dutch’ and ‘Spring breakers’ are literally his anthems. Don’t sleep, don’t eat, just do it on repeat indeed.

Lando Norris- ‘Short n’ Sweet’ by Sabrina Carpenter

A breakthrough years in the making. This year, Lando really cemented himself as one to watch and delivered some great results. Plus, I find Sabrina and Lando to have the same charming, cheeky personality so it’s fitting. ‘Come right on me, camaraderie’ from ‘Bed Chem’ sounds like a joke Lando would make lmao.

Charles Leclerc- ‘All Born Screaming’ by St. Vincent

I feel like I always associate Charles with angsty projects but I can’t help it. Just the whole idea of the album about finding joy in pain just screams Charles. And him narrowly missing out on P2 in the championship just nailed it for me. ‘Broken Man’ could be the soundtrack playing over that picture of him chugging water against the wall in Abu Dhabi.

Oscar Piastri- ‘Big Ideas’ by Remi Wolf

A fantastic sophomore album for a fantastic sophomore year in F1. One thing that really sticks out to me about this album is how confident in itself it is, which I believe something Oscar is too. Just exciting to witness. Plus ‘Kangaroo’ reminds me a bit of him, so. Can’t wait to see what both of them do next.

Carlos Sainz- ‘What Now’ by Brittany Howard

This is a bit of a wildcard, but I do feel like it fits. It was Carlos’ last year with Ferrari, I can’t help but feel like it must have been a conflicting experience for him. There’s themes of letting go and learning how to move on running throughout the album that I really love. The track ‘What Now’ has big Carlos energy, I can’t explain it.

George Russell- ‘Manning Fireworks’ by MJ Lenderman

George had a really solid year, very consistent throughout. This album is similar, just 10 straight solid tracks with great production and songwriting. I feel like it’s also been a bit underrated especially in a year with such great music, even though it’s been hailed as one of the year’s best. Kinda like George imo.

Lewis Hamilton- ‘Bando Stone and the New World’ by Childish Gambino

This reportedly being the final Gambino project felt fitting for Lewis’ last year with Mercedes. The album didn’t reach the highs of previous Gambino projects but it is still a very strong showcase of what makes him so unique, with all the different influences and styles. I would also make a Lewis edit to ‘Lithonia’ if I knew how.

Bonus option for Lewis- ‘No Name’ by Jack White… I don’t have much of an explanation for this, I just got major Lewis vibes from this album.

Sergio Perez- ‘Radical Optimism’ by Dua Lipa

Just like Dua, Checo had radical optimism that he would have a seat next year lolll jokes aside, apart from some songs, personally this album was kinda underwhelming overall just like Checo’s performance this year. Wish the best for him for his future endeavors, but it was just an unfortunate season for him.

Breesays' Favorite Songs of 2024

I make a concerted effort to listen to new music, mostly because of my job at Setlist. Thanks to Music League, this year I discovered some not-new music I loved. I was victim to the obsession of Taylor Swift's TTPD, but it didn't entrance me as hard as Fall Out Boy's SMFS did the year before. But, Tay did make the list several times, as did Glass Animals, Phantogram, Suki Waterhouse, Halsey.

I did listen to a lot of Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan. Shoutout to Music League for Childish Gambino and The Veronicas on this list.

Favorite 2024 Album Drops

It is time once again for my favorite annual tradition, making lists of my favorite things! This year i only have music-focused rankings, and no books or shows or movies for reasons we do not have to get into lol [let's just use lack of brain cells as a catch-all term]. however i did listen to a METRIC FUCKTON of music and tracked all my album listening in one unwieldy spreadsheet which means this year i have STATS!

i listened to 70 whole albums that were released this year (200 in total)! i rated over 40 of them at least a 7/10 or higher! August was the month i listened to the most 2024 releases (a total of 8)! Wowie zowie!!!

All Born Screaming - St. Vincent / historically i've not actually been super big into St. Vincent - like i can acknowledge her music is objectively well made but it's never been my personal cup of tea - until this record, which pushed all my buttons lyrically and production and everything wise (apparently she both wrote and produced this album! what can't this woman do!) and i must thank her for it

2. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT - Billie Eilish / this was a very strong contender for my personal AOTY for a good chunk of the year and i'm genuinely a bit surprised it didn't take it home

1. What Now - Brittany Howard / however i do think this album is fucking flawless from start to finish, like i didn't do a ton of relistening beyond initial listens this year but this is one i frequently came back to. dripping in both raw emotion and impressive musicality, it is imho a tour de force

forbidden fruit february. self explanatory. aquarius season is for yearning and getting messy, thanks fiona apple idlings of march is when spring begins again, just barely but there’s a careful joy spreading. joyful tunes! this must be the place! spring has sprung and continues springing. instrumental interludes as standalone songs, everything sounds like water. the time that we wasted just hit like a wave begin again, another spring playlist. this time with childish gambino, laura marling, hayley williams, guns’n’roses, the classic combo april flowers. short and sweet, alice phoebe lou meets car seat headrest slowly come the saints of summer. do you remember when st vincent said daddy’s home well i made a whole playlist about it. mika is in there. genuinely no idea what was going on that summer. never ending summer, this IS the season of the witch. we love a strange mix of oldies and french and german new wave  i can’t believe summer is over and oh it’s so sentimental, it’s a cherry-coloured funk winter walking. it’s giving phoebe bridgers in the graveyard, mountain goats, springsteen, mother mother winter fruits: the first big thief singles off their latest album came out and sent me down this particular spiral. frankie cosmos and mitski, niche italian indie pop

playlists i still edit/add to, first: good moods.

still you. skinshape, biig piig, kadhja bonet, julia jacklin autobahn, a roadtrip playlist, best friends laughing, mostly italian 70s/80s many moons ago: it’s pop! it’s happy things! silly goofy times golden hour! an old one. started this in 2018, sylvan esso was big, king krule, her’s, clairo will you always love like this? dream pop. lesbianism. st south.  everyday’s a holiday: okay kaya and rex orange county, steve lacy vibes maybe i wasn’t there: kendrick, dijon, rosalía come on over & do the twist. they’re love songs. aching with nostalgia but happy coffee in bed is teetering on the edge between a lovely warm soup of emotions and desperate yearning clear the fog is where the yearning begins in earnest.

free drinks at the local bar, we’ve got mac demarco, the strokes, girlpool. you know the drill take me for a spin: something of a continuation of free drinks a few years later now including sam cohen, kevin morby. sad-ish music that still works if played in public ring: odes to being happysad on public transport in berlin, short and sweet peel you like a fruit.
