Bilan musical 2022 : 100 titres
-- la perruque de Tyler, the Creator ;
-- les invocations musicales d’Yves Tumor, transcription sonore de son espace mental où le gloubiboulga de références qu’il a dans la tête ressemblerait étrangement au sabbat de sorcières qu’abrite la mienne ;
-– les Flowers cancéreuses, proliférantes, fascinantes, inquiétantes, de Julianna Barwick ;
-- le Feels Like Summer de Childish Gambino, découvert en pleine canicule, sa déploration de la catastrophe climatique troussée comme le tube de l’été, tout en chaloupements et chœurs énamourés et effets de reverb ;
-- Run The Jewel et leur beat absolument irrésistible sur Goonies vs ET, qui me rappelle toujours ce que j’avais répondu, ado, à mon père, en pleine Brosmania (« Si t’as pas envie de danser là-dessus, c’est que t’es vieux ») ;
-- la brume mordorée s’élevant sur les reflets dansants d’une eau calme, un matin où le son porte bien : c'est My Father In Hong Kong (toujours un plaisir de prendre des nouvelles de Gold Panda, sirène solitaire dans l'océan electro qui travaille l'harmonie en modulant dans les tons voisins au lieu de fonctionner par aplats de chants/contrechants successifs) ;
-- les miaulements d’Amaraae sur Feel A Way, qui me rappelaient opportunément que çà fait tellement longtemps que je n’ai pas fait de sexe, que je suis probablement redevenue vierge entre temps ;
Tumblr media
-- Roisin Murphy et sa deep house grandiloquente (We Get Together !), et ce moment où je fonçais tranquillement à 130 sur l’A13 et où, en approchant du tunnel de Saint-Cloud, contre toute attente, le gars qui roulait loin derrière moi, sur la file de gauche, m’a gentiment fait un appel de phares pour me prévenir du radar (ami conducteur, où que tu sois, je te salue et je te souhaite des plaquettes de frein aussi neuves que les miennes) ;
-- la Jeanette que Kelly Lee Owens a dû composer pour une petite fille, tellement j’y entends cette qualité perdue depuis longtemps, et que je chéris chaque fois que je la retrouve chez un artiste : la candeur (alors pourquoi j'ai l'impression qu'elle l'a composée pour ma voiture ?) ;
-- et tout en haut du podium : Chai et Fashionista, en parfaite résonance avec les pistons de ma voiture tricotant le kilométrage à toute allure, dans une synchronie à deux temps avec la pulsation de mon propre cur – une blanche pour moi, une triple croche pour eux – et je n'ai pas d'images plus juste ni plus succincte de l’osmose vécue l’année dernière avec ma voiture, femelle centaure que j’étais devenue à rouler quatre heures par jour, seule usagère du Périph à prendre encore son pied au stade terminal de l’embouteillage – seule conductrice à avoir la banane d’une oreille à l’autre, de la Porte d'Auteuil à la Porte de Vincennes ;
-- même la suffocation qu’expose Astrid Sonne et son The Air Is Unfit – mise en son d’un cauchemar technologique peut-être, où ne rôderait entre les machines clignotantes qu’un fantôme vengeur s’abattant sur le visiteur imprudent pour l’étrangler – même ce bref corps-à-corps avec un ennemi invisible était une belle mort, à la lumière de cette année-là.

Favorite 2024 Album Drops
It is time once again for my favorite annual tradition, making lists of my favorite things! This year i only have music-focused rankings, and no books or shows or movies for reasons we do not have to get into lol [let's just use lack of brain cells as a catch-all term]. however i did listen to a METRIC FUCKTON of music and tracked all my album listening in one unwieldy spreadsheet which means this year i have STATS!
i listened to 70 whole albums that were released this year (200 in total)! i rated over 40 of them at least a 7/10 or higher! August was the month i listened to the most 2024 releases (a total of 8)! Wowie zowie!!!
Full list along with notes/ramblings under the cut:
10. Big Sigh - Marika Hackman
9. Romanticism - Hana Vu
8. ten days - Fred again..
7. What A Devastating Turn Of Events - Rachel Chinouriri
6. Big Ideas - Remi Wolf
5. Bando Stone and The New World - Childish Gambino
4. Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace - Shabaka
3. All Born Screaming - St. Vincent / historically i've not actually been super big into St. Vincent - like i can acknowledge her music is objectively well made but it's never been my personal cup of tea - until this record, which pushed all my buttons lyrically and production and everything wise (apparently she both wrote and produced this album! what can't this woman do!) and i must thank her for it
2. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT - Billie Eilish / this was a very strong contender for my personal AOTY for a good chunk of the year and i'm genuinely a bit surprised it didn't take it home
1. What Now - Brittany Howard / however i do think this album is fucking flawless from start to finish, like i didn't do a ton of relistening beyond initial listens this year but this is one i frequently came back to. dripping in both raw emotion and impressive musicality, it is imho a tour de force
HONORABLE MENTIONS: EPs
These did not make the list proper simply because they are not full album length, however i needed to shout them out bc despite my inherent bias toward longer records i think these are all basically as close to perfection as EPs can even get
Drop 7 - Little Simz
Sophcore - Moses Sumney
Lagos Paris London - Yannis & The Yaw / collab between foals' lead singer and the late Afrobeat/jazz drummer Tony Allen

a comprehensive list of (almost) all of my spotify playlists, sorted by theme
category 1: a bit of everything.
every feeling everywhere all at once opened by brian eno, closed by mitski, in between an eclectic mix of everything to scream cry and dance to  essentials. as the title suggests this is the music that makes up the foundation of my identity. funkadelic, air, spiritualized, y la bamba, weyes blood etc etc multitudes: similar idea but older. more hip hop in there, a little time capsule of 2017
seasonal playlists: these are closed chapters that won’t be altered
forbidden fruit february. self explanatory. aquarius season is for yearning and getting messy, thanks fiona apple idlings of march is when spring begins again, just barely but there’s a careful joy spreading. joyful tunes! this must be the place! spring has sprung and continues springing. instrumental interludes as standalone songs, everything sounds like water. the time that we wasted just hit like a wave begin again, another spring playlist. this time with childish gambino, laura marling, hayley williams, guns’n’roses, the classic combo april flowers. short and sweet, alice phoebe lou meets car seat headrest slowly come the saints of summer. do you remember when st vincent said daddy’s home well i made a whole playlist about it. mika is in there. genuinely no idea what was going on that summer. never ending summer, this IS the season of the witch. we love a strange mix of oldies and french and german new wave  i can’t believe summer is over and oh it’s so sentimental, it’s a cherry-coloured funk winter walking. it’s giving phoebe bridgers in the graveyard, mountain goats, springsteen, mother mother winter fruits: the first big thief singles off their latest album came out and sent me down this particular spiral. frankie cosmos and mitski, niche italian indie pop
playlists i still edit/add to, first: good moods.
still you. skinshape, biig piig, kadhja bonet, julia jacklin autobahn, a roadtrip playlist, best friends laughing, mostly italian 70s/80s many moons ago: it’s pop! it’s happy things! silly goofy times golden hour! an old one. started this in 2018, sylvan esso was big, king krule, her’s, clairo will you always love like this? dream pop. lesbianism. st south.  everyday’s a holiday: okay kaya and rex orange county, steve lacy vibes maybe i wasn’t there: kendrick, dijon, rosalía come on over & do the twist. they’re love songs. aching with nostalgia but happy coffee in bed is teetering on the edge between a lovely warm soup of emotions and desperate yearning clear the fog is where the yearning begins in earnest.
moody moods.
free drinks at the local bar, we’ve got mac demarco, the strokes, girlpool. you know the drill take me for a spin: something of a continuation of free drinks a few years later now including sam cohen, kevin morby. sad-ish music that still works if played in public ring: odes to being happysad on public transport in berlin, short and sweet peel you like a fruit. THEE playlist of psychological warfare.  i would be an electrician: if you enjoy julien baker’s happy to be here, the following ten tracks might do similar damage to your psyche  no more bad news from my jorja smith phase, also greentea peng, arlo parks gloomy. it’s the end of the world, sharon van etten said, and love is a losing game, and there’s stormy weather and love will tear us apart.  calm there’s definitely a flatsound track in there. be warned.
and here’s three completely new ones, works in progress, not yet categorised:
touch. a very specific moment in time. listening to beach house and rhye with all my friends on a big couch, drifting off together, crying a little, holding on tightly all the in between: the only place that matters is by your side, mama you’ve been on my mind, only the strong survive, don’t think twice it’s alright. songs that transcend time and space transitional. seeing angels in everything
already this post is way too long. i have so many playlists, my god. i have a whole folder sorted by genre, one by decade, more by concepts and themes. i’m currently sorting through everything and thought i’d share my process, maybe you’ll find something for yourself new in my chaos :)

Playlist meme
@snailtime thanks for the tag! i genuinely have not done one of these since i was like 20 so this is WILD that i’m doing one now!
Rules: You can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. Put your playlist on shuffle and list the first 10 songs, and then tag some ppl if you like!
okay so as my own personal disclaimer, i have playlists curated for Very Specific moods, so i figured I would just use the default “Liked Songs” playlist on my Spotify (after i cleaned it up lol) so let’s see...
I Feel It Coming by The Weeknd & Daft Punk (what a throwback huh)
Hold Me Now by Nai Br. XX & Celeina Ann (this is from Carole & Tuesday!)
Peach Pit by Peach Pit
Sober by Childish Gambino
Wear Sunscreen by Peach Pyramiid
Digital Witness by St. Vincent
Scarlet Forest by Toby Fox (i have so much of the Undertale and Deltarune songs in my liked songs playlist......)
Life Is Simple In The Moonlight by The Strokes
Working for the Knife by Mitski
The Woman That Loves You by Japanese Breakfast
okay this was pretty fun and i’ll tag a few people myself so i’m gonna tag: @revxrd @builtmiserableentity @wr3h and @icllucia !

Vincent Gambino up in this court room
now, ladies and gentlemen of the jury… i may not be a “big city” lawyer. indeed, indeed, and i do declare… i may in fact be, ah, temporarily free—on probation—from my imprisonment in the wretched crystal. but do not let these simple facts, these minutiae, distract you from 1,000 gigavolts lightning strike upon the courtroom
uh, ahem. i said 1,000 gigavolts lightning strike upon the courtroom. *wiping my forehead with a handkerchief* it appears my powers aren’t working your honor

Hi there! Could I request Strifentine for lucky 77 pls and thank? 💜
STRIFENTINE??? YOU ARE BELOVED BY THE GODDESS BUT YOURE MORE BELOVED BY ME 🖤🖤🖤
I’m cackling—77 is No Role Modelz by J. Cole because. Hell yeah. And yknow what, I think I could make that work! Someone needs to tell Vincent that Lucrescia was always for the streets and who better than Cloud. SHUT THE FUCK UP AND DONT SAVE HER VINCENT 🗣️
Okay, thanks for the request! I’ve got. Looks over. A LIST. Which is shown beneath the cut. Remember that I don’t mind song repeats as long as it’s a different pairing.
Mwah lovely I’ll mention you when it’s posted 🫶🏽
