All of MXTX's protags are unreliable narrators, but in different ways
Shen Qingqiu is unreliable because he is unable to understand that the characters around him are people and see how much his actions have changed the plot
Wei Wuxian is unreliable because he has self worth issues and thinks the people who love him actually hate him
Xie Lian is unreliable because he is a cheeky motherfucker who purposely keeps information from the reader

What if Narinder was a scum villain or smt…. (AU THING!?!)
Tumblr media
You can you up, no can no bb. If you are so insistent on the story being terrible, okay, go on and change it! Let’s see how this story’s biggest hater does in the shoes of the main villain.
SVSSS x COTL?!?!!? More likely than you think!!!! (Doodles under the cut!!
‼️Slight blood warning‼️ )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey….
*crowd actually cheers for once*
That’s weird. Who are you people.
*crowd stares at me confused*
Uh…Bing bong so my brain once more decided to torture me with visions (mixing one of my fave books with one of my favorite games—) so now this exists—
These weeks have been a LOT. I went into a stress induced creative block and right after went to French summer camp?! Writing this as I’m supposed to be asleep LMAO (dw I’ll be okay) but ANYWAYS!! What is this?!
Crossover duh—but to those who don’t know the plot—okay. Just imagine ???? is this guy who reads a webcomic. (Which is cult of the lamb! Let’s forget the game exists. It’s a webcomic in this universe ) So he hates it because it’s bad. Like. Bad. The protagonist is too powerful, there are a bajillion plot holes, too many love interests—and god, what is that world-building?! He detests it, so as soon as it’s done he leaves one last hate comment—
As he chokes on his food.
That doesn’t end well.
Anyways, waking up, ???? realizes he has transmigrated into said story…as Narinder, the main villain, hated by all, and with the worst ending of all the antagonistic characters. The why of this? Well, the story is so bad, surely even someone like him could take matters into—quite literally—his own hands. Plus, he’s got a game-like system that rewards him or punishes him depending on how well he does in “fixing” the plot…while also not being able to break character, at least for the first story arc. Oh dear.
And so Narinder’s adventure starts. Survive, improve the outcome for everyone and—seduce the protagonist…? Wait—no—that wasn’t part of the plan-!!
Anyways. I’ll talk more about this silly thing later…when I’m not falling asleep at least dkfnkdjfjejfj. Hopefully you enjoyed the ramble and the doodles. Until next time

At some point we must come to accept that shen yuan really does enjoy PIDW, he's just so unreliable he tries to trick us into thinking he doesn't. He knows about random plot threads from 10 million words ago? Yep. Remembers each member of Binghe's harem? Yep. Remembers the random one off deus ex machina esque plants? Of course! Like...he reads p*rn for the plot, I applaud him, I fear him, but he totally enjoys reading PIDW, he's just got a thin face.

i hate all the many bingqiu depictions where sy/sqq is some young, innocent “straight” man and binghe is the terrible awful big scary dude who like comes onto him really hard like … idk how many times it’s gonna have to be said BINGQIU ARE FREAK4FREAK they’re both EQUALLY as into each other… lbh genuinely would never be so pushy like yeah book 2 he was sort of a bit insane but. xin mo. the end of book 3 where he’s in tears after what he did like???? he so very clearly was upset with himself??? some of y’all have fallen for sqq’s prude act FARRR too much like i fear even binghe can see through it… and y’all can’t? get it TOGETHER guys PLEASE!!!

watching hbomberguys rwby video rn and very annoyed by the idea that the whole dust intro and dust shop robbery scene is poor writing
#like rwby sucks ass do not get me wrong#but like. this guy even says its not a bad start to the story bc it sets up the next scene and tells u why dust is important and set ups the#the main antagonist of the season and his goals#but im annoyed at the idea a better intro wouldve been a better explanation of the world and its setting#like objectively yes it would be better considering the whole stealing dust plotline was dropped#but instead of changing the intro i think i better idea would be actual worldbuilding in the show itself lmaoo#like he said they explained the faunus and semblance wayyy later than they shouldve#and the kingdoms and theyre tense and fragile peace thing was suddenly mentioned at the end of s3#but this could all be solved by actual storytelling lmao#i cant remember the first episode well but im pretty sure the evil actual main villian lady was narrating the whole dust story and explainin#explaining grimm and stuff and that ozpin at the very end was like no you dumb bitch#or whatever#and like thats an interesting start to a story!!! it starts out sounding like a fairytale with a generic narrator until you find out its a c#conversation and ur liek who are u#rwbys problem is that it was bad storytelling but ironically the first two scenes of the episode are really good#i cant remember the rest of the episode rn or the rest of the show but like. just keep that energy#rwby couldve been so good UGH im mad#its like mlb all over again#anyways#im like 33 mins in the video but this bit abt the opening was annoying me lmao like its really not a bad intro#giving a worldbuilding dump in the very beginning of the show wouldve been even worse imo but this seemingly fairytale intro being a convo#between two people we later find out are important is such a good way to start#and then you actually wxplain the setting or show not tell it throughout the season instead of randomly dumping info when relevant#anyways ignore me i never even liked rwby that much this video was just annoying me#michi tag

for people who claim to like her for her lyricism, y'all sure don't internalize the messages very well do you? you can't say you empathize with the narrator in champagne problems because she's not ready for marriage (with the implication that her poor mental health is to blame) only to turn around and blame joe for not being ready for marriage (when it's been heavily implied by taylor herself that he suffers from depression). especially considering he wrote champagne problems with her??

Yue Qingyuan, whispering: We can't let him know
Liu Qingge, also whispering: He will find out eventually
Shen Qingqiu, walking up on them: What do you have there?
Liu Qingge, quickly hiding something behind his back: Nothing!
Shen Qingqiu: Ah, that wasn't suspicious at all
Yue Qingyuan, also hiding something behind his back: Sorry about that xi- Qingqiu-shidi. It looks like another volume of Regret of Chunshan came out so we had confiscated them from disciples
Shen Qingqiu, hiding his flushing face with a fan: I see, well you both don't need my help for that. I will take my leave
Yue Qingyuan, after making sure Shen Qingqiu is out of earshot: You nearly gave us away!
Liu Qingge: I panicked!
Yue Qingyuan, taking out a book written by 'Arrow Shooting Towards The Sky: We can't let him know about the new harem drama about him. He would never look us in the eyes again!

so i don’t normally feel comfortable rating books that are supposed to challenge your way of thinking but i am going to say that while the story isn’t necessarily a page turner you can’t put down it is an interesting (although difficult) read that you do want to keep reading
that being said the rest of this is going to be a discussion containing spoilers
so the major question. did mary do it?
i want the answer to be no. i find the character change to be abrupt and it’s easy to believe that she only admits to doing it because she’s challenged in group therapy about her love for her mother and how the other girls in group therapy who love their mothers and profess that they would take the wrap for their mothers (and mary is very obviously looking for the love of a mother) and only then when she admits that she loves her mom she confesses that she did it
but that challenge in therapy is also what made me challenge my thinking about the book.
mary says she didn’t do and the question is posed.
so what? so what if mary did do it?
there are so many important topics to grapple with in the book. abuse. not dealing with emotions especially in response to grief. insufficient treatment of mental illness. racism in the justice system. children falling through the cracks in school systems. the justice system not being equipped to deal with children. and the consequences of life after incarceration. and it’s important to examine those topics in both cases of mary’s guilt or innocence.
in the case of mary’s innocence everything she went through is a terrible grave failing of america and it’s treatment of children specifically black children and it’s a grave unforgivable miscarriage of justice but it’s almost easy to dismiss. mary was mistreated and while horrible she still turned out relatively well so there’s no rush to assess the systems that led to her situation
but in the case of mary’s guilt we have to examine these systems more closely.  how much is a child who doesn’t know better yet, who is ill equipped to deal with both her own and her mother’s emotions, really at fault? what good does it do to incarcerate that child? to leave them to be further abused by the justice system?
we have to ask ourselves could mary have been saved if anyone had looked into why she was so quiet? would she have been diagnosed sooner and gotten help? would people have been better at asserting that her diagnoses were incorrect or simply convenient fixes? would she have been given the help she needed? do we as a society have to share some of the blame?
and finally we have to ask does she deserve to the be thrown out into the world with nothing? and have her child taken from her? because of something she did as a child?
there are people who are convinced in the book of mary’s innocence and people who are convinced of mary’s guilt and those people let their convictions determine how they’ll treat mary but i imagine tiffany d jackson wants us to be more like claire in response to the challenge of so what if mary did (or didn’t) do it? and assert that it doesn’t matter as long as she’s taking steps forward.
of course i do have other questions about whether mary was willingly given to her mother or stolen. i have questions about if something did happen to mary’s bother. i have questions about the poisoning of her mother’s boyfriend and when she poured bleach in the coffee of her group leader’s cup is it because she’s poisoned someone before or because she learned from her mother.  if mary did shove pills down the baby’s throat is it because that’s what her mother did to her to make her ‘‘good’‘?   is it because she used to give her mother pills on a bad day? i also have questions about how mary got the necklace, pieces of which were found in the baby’s throat? were the experts right in saying that mary on her medication was too weak to cause the injuries? did she know better?
but i think those are questions and their answers (or the implications of those answers) are something we’re supposed to grapple with

Veilgaurd exists in such a weird spot on the morality circuit to me. It's so clear that they've got overt inclusivity messaging all over the place. To the point of ludicrousy at times (looking at you Lords of Fortune i.e. Jake and the Neverland Pirates.) When they're trying to make a point about what is morally good and the correct point of view™️ they hit you over the head with it. Thinking about Taash's dialogues about the Lords not stealing anything "cultural, you know- important" and their codex entry about gender. It's not that any of these messages or sentiments are wrong. But the way they are handled in the story is so at odds with a piece of media rated for mature audiences.
And then. And then the game turns around and makes the Antaam the most egregiously racist depiction of the Qunari in the series to date. The fact they managed that is kind of amazing in and of itself because I think the goal was to minimize the Qunari dilemma. By saying "not all Qunari! Just the Antaam!" It's similar to what they're aiming for with the Venatori and Tevinter.
The problem is though, now they've backed in to a corner where the warring Qunari faction is under the umbrella of "ridiculous disney villian that we don't explore further than that." And in doing so paint almost every Qunari that follows the Qun as a mindless brute that wears next to nothing and spends most of the game growling. Which is just. Deeply unsettling to see in a game that is trying so hard to be woke you feel like youre watching them pat themselves on the back as you play.
Like how do you double down so so hard on the inclusivity in so many aspects, and then turn around and do that?
I mean how did Dragon Age 2, a game that came out in 2011, portray the Qunari characters as so much more nuanced and intelligent than the 2024 Inclusivity Champion? Not to mention Kirkwall as a whole actually explores Tevinter's slavery problem on a much deeper level than Minrathous does? The narration Varric gives about the Gallows and the slave trade in the span of 30 seconds discusses more about the Tevinter Empire's relationship with slavery than Veilgaurd does in the entire game. That's without even mentioning Fenris.
Now I'm not claiming any of the previous titles were without their own mis-steps here. Im just a little irritated by how much this game reeks of hypocrisy at points.

UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; SIDE B
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shen Qingqiu Propaganda:
The entire series is told from his POV and the story seems like a comedy. The side stories from other characters POVs make the story sound like a tragedy. He thought that Luo Binghe hated him and wanted him dead while everyone else knew that Binghe was in love with him.
the whole book he’s using his OWN interpretation of the world to explain literally everything, not knowing that his introduction into the world changed it so fundamentally that his prior knowledge of it is less than useless. he’s like “binghe is being sweet to me because binghe is sweet to people that wronged him before repaying their slight a thousandfold, and he only adds their acceptance of his sweetness to his tally of their sins!! i have to run away forever or he’ll tear my arms and legs off!!!!!!” and binghe in reality is like “wow the love of my life my beloved shizun is scared of me still :( i should act sweet and nonthreatening so he’s not scared of me :(“ and he literally doesn’t have this corrected until the end of the book. but even when that one thing is corrected he still is like “haha okay but these other six things-“ bro……. cucumber bro………….. you homosexualized the world just accept it
He examines the entire reality he's isekai-ed into as if it's still fictional and his inner monologue ignores any "character trait" of the people around him that doesn't fit into his perception of "canon" despite everything he's done to change reality from the canon of the novel he first read. He routinely mislabels his own emotions as well as making heteronormative assumptions about himself and the people around him before he finally realises he's in reciprocated gay love with a man. It's a book that benefits being read twice, so the second time around you can focus on the implications Shen Qingqiu blatantly misses.
Transmigrates into a novel he “hates,” assumes he’s doing a good job pretending to be the character whose body he got stuck in, assumes other characters will stick to their original paths. Lotta assumptions, lots of rationalizing, lots of incredible feats of misunderstanding/misinterpreting things. His internal narration is also hysterical.
Cale Henituse Propaganda:
Motherfucker is out here saving the entire continent and then gets confused when they become loyal to him. he's all like "oh yea, they're just repaying their debt then they'll leave and I'll be able to slack off" and then he gets mega confused when they DONT leave and instead fight anyone who mildly insults them. He chalks this up to them all just being unstable. Also he casually wins a war, doesn't realize he's a war hero, and casually walks away thinking it wasn't a big deal. Fucking idiot I love him

I really think we should emulate Scum Villian and start including elaborate kaomoji into all narration.
"To be or not to be, that is the question
ლ(¯ロ¯"ლ)"
Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
。゚・ (>﹏<) ・゚。
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
( っ˶´ ˘ `)っ
It was the best of times
৻( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻)
It was the worst of times
