the room is rather steamy, allowing its damp warmth to permeate the tissue of your lungs. 

viktor is already settled in the bath, head tilted back to rest against the tile of the bathroom wall, his adam’s apple punctuated through the pale skin of his neck. his eyes were closed, allowing you to watch him shamelessly as you undressed.

he only hummed in response, looking over you with a smile that was somehow both genuine, soft, and also containing a great deal of ravenous longing. you watched him, too: how the hairs at the nape of his neck were dark with damp, his chest, a few moles scattered across it, rising and falling with rhythmic, full breaths. he looked serene, for once, the stress of his work and the ache in his leg momentarily subsided.  

the subtle, almost challenging raise of his eyebrow seemed to magnetise you both, for you moved towards him gently. he shifted to grant you more room as you settled between his legs, back to his chest. his head lowered to press a devoted kiss to your shoulder, then your pulse point, murmuring something against your skin. 

you didn’t bother asking him what it was he said, allowing the sigh to release from your chest at the overwhelming honey-feeling of it all: the heat of the air, your skin, the pressure of his body behind yours — it encased you in a thick layer of love that could never be replicated.

his lips curved into a smile against your temple, inhaling your scent with great pleasure, a contented moan pushing past his lips. he pulled away, reclining back into his original position as you mirrored him against his chest. your hair, which was piled atop your head, a few stray coils escaping across your forehead, tickled viktor’s neck a little, but he didn’t mind. he took one of the longer ones between his fingers, looking over it with endearing inquisitiveness. his obsession with your hair wasn’t childlike. no, it was cultured, worshipping, like it was his only responsibility in this world. he pulled, extending it gently before letting it spring back into the mass of hair. it made him grin every time. 

his eyes ran over your side profile, appreciating every soft curve, every angular line you possessed. he wanted to solve you, this labyrinthine body and its soul that tortured him with all its infinite warmth. looking at you was like looking at all that was good in the world, and he wanted nothing more than to bask in the rays of light you emit so effortlessly.

The hustle and bustle of work was exciting for a man like Viktor. The endless possibility of discovery and science were what made getting up before the sun meaningful. He’d have to tear himself away from the comfort of your bed to pursue his other passions. During his morning routine he’d leave a pot of coffee for you to drink when you woke up a few hours later and a small note with a quote on it. It was always something inspirational, thought provoking or just silly. Every morning he’d place a gentle kiss to your forehead and sneak out of your bedroom. The morning commute to the lab felt so peaceful regardless of all the people scrambling to get to work.

He’d stop and get a whiff of the crisp morning air, the cold bite of it nipping at the skin all over his body. Viktor has his own personal arsenal to fight off the ruthless winter months in the city. The scarf you’d given him for Christmas, the brown overcoat his mother sent him, and his trusty morning coffee. He’d clutch them all close on his way to the train, walking as fast as he could, cane in hand. The ride on the train was the highlight of his commute. The rocking of the car almost puts him back to sleep but what really makes it is crossing a bridge that gives him a front row seat to the rising sun. He loves to feel the warmth of the sun on his skin as he sees it wake with the rest of the world. Viktor always wishes you were there with him to see it, but he knows you’d rather be sound asleep.

Every sight he sees in the morning on the way to work goes back to you. While he’s handling machine parts and solving equations, you linger in the back of his mind. He never gets fully distracted; he can’t afford to; the work is too delicate but you’re always there.  He makes the attempt to text you during his breaks, but they always seem to be over as soon as they start, and the ache comes back again. When his shift is over it’s well into the middle of the night. It’s a gamble whether you’d be awake or not, depending on how you feel that day. Sometimes you’d be sitting on the couch wrapped in a blanket, watching your favorite movies.

Once you heard the door lock click, you’d get up to greet him with a kiss and a hello. You’d both play around during your nightly routine, putting off sleep to spend more time together; until your bodies demanded rest.  Unfortunately, this was not one of those times, he opens the door to your apartment only to be greeted by silence. The entirety of the living room is bathed in the soft blue light of the moon. Viktor sits down to take his shoes off then lay his coat and scarf on the couch. He takes a breath and looks around to see the signs of what you’d been doing that day. There are two open books with sticky notes and highlighters on the kitchen table, you were doing some studying for class he thinks. He sees the semi dry dishes on the drying rack in the kitchen still drying onto the drying mat. As he tip-toes into the hallway the quiet clack of his cane echoes in the dark, this night is so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

He uses his shoulder to peek in the cracked door of your shared bedroom. He sees the sight of you draped in the thin linen sheets of your bed, the comforter haphazardly kicked away. Viktor smiles to himself, if you could see yourself now, you’d be so embarrassed. You don’t look as glamorous as they do in the movies, your face is smushed into the pillow and you’re holding onto it like someone will snatch it away from you. You don’t understand his fascination with the way you look while you’re asleep, but Viktor can’t get enough of it. He walks over to the edge of the bed and uses the tip of this fore finger to stroke your browbone and moves very gently to the bottom of your jaw. You are a light that brings life to the apartment, the peace of the apartment is an unfortunate consequence of your absence. Unconscious or not, not being able to hear your voice ring through the place makes it so much darker. You tell him you feel the same way when he’s gone but you shine much brighter than he does.

In his eyes he’s just the flame of the candle and you are the sun, completely incomparable. He moves toward the dresser to change into his pajamas, deciding to shower in the morning. Once he's done, he slides under the sheet and pulls some of the comforter onto his body. He feels you shuffle toward his body and drape your arm onto him. He chuckles quietly and takes hold of your wrist, stroking it gently. He whispers a quiet good night to you as he drifts off into his dreams where he can watch the sunrise with you.
