i'll actually in a limited capacity defend the overwatch league's regional teams gimmick but the execution was bad. having regional teams could have been hype. like--during astralis' 2018-2019 csgo run, danish esports fans went fucking insane for them. and like of course they did. there's inherently something exciting about having a team you can in some way 'identify' with. and geography does create natural sports rivalries and pre-writes your stories.

there were two glaring bad problems in the dumb way blizzard did this though. one is forcing teams to come up with brand new branding. this was a horrible idea. it forced well-established esports organizations with strong fanbases across different games like cloud9 and optic to try and build new brands up from scratch. they realized this with their call of duty leage where they let teams play as 'atlanta faze' and 'optic texas' but yknow. kind of too little too late

the other one (and this is also the glaring fatal flaw in the overwatch league's entire silly, silly business plan) is the idea of a global league. now if you don't know much about esports you might think 'wait whats wrong with that. its gaming you can do it online players can be anywhere'. however that's not true! first of all, esports--well esports doesn't make money, esports when managed correctly is essentially a loss leader for the game it's an esport for--but esports makes a lot of its money on live events. yeah, people go to see esports games:

much more importantly, ping is a huge factor in esports. the higher the level you're playing at, especially in a game like overwatch that's full of twitchy hitscan aiming, the more a 10ms latency difference can make or break a game. you need to be running in-person events in order to have a competitive esports league and to make a good chunk of your revenue.

and that means that a global esports league runs into the exact same problem a global normal sports league would run into and the reason why that doesn't exist, which is travel logistics. the overwatch league has a london team, a san francisco team, and a chengdu team. these cities are very far away from each other [citation needed] and although overwatch league people will often blame covid for ruining their plans, i honestly think it actually saved them by preventing the horrible idea they had for how the league would work from actually happening. imagine all the problems that travel causes in a league like the NBA--jet lag, exhaustion, the obvious budgetary expenditure. now imagine that the travel itinerary also includes flights across the atlantic and/or pacific.

that's not even all! the thing about esports is that, because practicing for ten hours a day doesn't physically destroy your body like it would for regular sports, esports players and teams... do that. if you spend seventeen hours on a plane from paris to hangzhou for a match that's seventeen hours where you're not practicing. when you arrive, you can't just stay at a hotel--you need to be able to practice in the days leading up to the match too, especially because it's esports, which means the game can change. if you miss some practice as a sports team, you're gonna be rusty--if you miss some practice as an esports team, the rules of the game might have literally changed since your last practice session.

the result of this, by the way, is that the london and paris teams have never been actually based in europe--and that right now the dallas team is based in korea. it is very silly. every other multinational esport ever invented has created regional leagues--league of legends has a league for korea, china, europe, north america, pacific, vietnam, brazil, japan, and latin america. but blizzard entertainment are god's special little gamers and they weren't going to let something like 'the ocean' get in the way of their global league dream.

and ultimately this means that the entire local team concept was pointless. most of the teams aren't locally based. and even if they were -- the madcap way they play against each other mean that those city affiliations don't matter. when manchester united play liverpool f.c., even if you are not a big football fan, if you're from manchester you presumably have an opinion of liverpool and liverpudlians, and vice versa. there is an emotional hook to latch on to. if manchester united were to play khon khaen united, you would probably say 'where the fuck is khon khaen'. for the localisation to work, the overwatch league's london team needed a manchester or glasgow or dublin or amsterdam or brussels team (etc.) to play against. if you're invested in the esport itself and the players, you can get invested in a philadelphia-london or chengdu-houston rivalry--but the localisation aspect of it isn't doing the work it should there.

tldr: the overwatch league was a bad idea ever since the moment it was announced. people are too harsh on the team localization idea but the way it was executed was hot garbage and it's no wonder this entire venture failed badly

I won't cry

The honeymoon in Japan is actually a reference to my own honeymoon experience where we actually did both get food poisoning and ended up missing the entire food experience I wanted in Tokyo. ***

“Are you feeling any better today?” 

Draco popped his head through the doorway to check on Hermione where she lay curled up in their massive four-poster. They had just returned home after their honeymoon in Southeast Asia spanning multiple countries, including South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Japan. Several months were lost to their travels, where they wandered without the pressure of set schedules. 

No matter how many times Hermione tried to map out an itinerary, the plans would suddenly disappear the next morning, leaving them to explore in the organic way Draco preferred and which she grew to appreciate even if she never admitted it (“We have magic, Hermione—we don’t need reservations”).

Yet against all expectations, Hermione caught a stomach bug somewhere in Japan, ruining her hopes for a self-led tour through Tokyo Station’s Ramen Street and a Michelin Star dinner at a restaurant specializing in tempura (“Why in the world do muggles take the culinary advice of a tire mascot?”). She blamed it on the raw chicken her local friends claimed was a delicacy, while Draco had suspicions about the last-minute train bento. She couldn’t go an hour without a trip to the loo, putting a damper on attempts to take in a final farewell to the cherry blossoms at the end of their bloom.

And now they were home in the comforts of familiar bed sheets, Winky waiting hand and foot on her missus.

“A bit, though I’ve finally figured out the source of my sickness thanks to Winky.” Even in her state, pale faced, messy bun, Draco’s old Quidditch jersey, she was beautiful.

Her smile drew him into the room to her side, where he sat and held her hand. “Should I be more concerned?”

“That depends.”

“On?”

“Whether or not you think we’re ready.”

“Ready? What, to go to St. Mungo’s?” He asked, brow furrowed in confusion. Leaning forward to run his hand from her forehead down her neck, he didn’t feel any hint of a fever.

“Well, yes, that would probably be wise, though Winky has already helped significantly.”

Right on cue, the house elf popped into place right next to them holding a tray of food.

“Winky is here to feed Mistress and young Malfoy!” She bustled over, swatting Draco’s hands aside to place the tray.

Watching the small elf with a bemused expression, Draco replied, “That doesn’t look like enough food for us both, or am I to go to the dining room?”

As Hermione tittered, Winky scoffed and shooed him in a manner she would have previously found offensive. “Winky isn’t talking about Master Draco. Winky is referring to the baby.”

“…baby?”

Light grey eyes shot to meet golden brown, and the upward curl of her lips confirmed all his hopes and fears.

“Are we…pregnant?”

“Winky is never wrong in these matters. Winky cast the detection charm, and if Master and Mistress would like, will also determine the sex?”

“No!”

At Winky’s insulted face, Draco cleared his throat and held his hands palm-side up.

“What I meant to say was ‘thank you’, Winky. And I do mean it. I—well, I think we—”

“What my dear husband means to say is that we’d like that at least to be a surprise.” Hermione was now fully grinning at the two of them. “And yes, thank you. I’d like to speak with Draco alone now, if you don’t mind?”

Bowing her head and shooting a glare at Draco, Winky disapparated with a crack that echoed through the now too-quiet room. He stared at where the elf once stood, threading his fingers repeatedly, desperately trying to still the fluttering in his stomach.

A baby. He was going to be a father.

How the hell was he going to be a good father when he only had his own as an example? What would the child think growing up with the Malfoy name, one that could be found in newspaper articles and new history books?

“Draco.”

His chest tightened and he struggled to breathe. What kind of future could he offer to his child?

As the thoughts and questions continued to crowd his mind, he flinched when he felt a cool hand grasp his, fingers rubbing soothing circles into his palm. The roar in his ears quieted and he focused instead on the motions, the pulling of her fingers on his own.

“Draco, we’re going to be parents…together.”

Together.

His face snapped back up to gaze at his wife, and the heavy weight that had hammered down on him lifted up and away, allowing him to breathe once more. He clutched at her like a lifeline, and for a horrifying moment felt tears prick at the corners of his eyes.

I won’t cry. I will NOT cry. Together, we will redefine the Malfoy name, and make it one this baby can be proud of.

As he settled on this life goal, he surged forward to wrap her in his arms. If there were happy tears, well, he would claim they were Hermione’s.

What Vietnam Was Like!

After hearing so much about Vietnam, my dad decided to book us the flights. we packed our bags at the chance.

Dad planned, a lot. Researching what google had to say about vietnam to come up with an extra ordinary one week itinerary and eventually I had a clear picture in my mind of what I thought I was about to experience. i imagined Big billboards, shanty towns, loads of people, sweaty sun, street markets, no order whatsoever and either filled with friendly people. I can pinpoint when the craziness of Ho Chi Minh City hit me, almost literally. We’d been there about 30 minutes, but only out of the hotel about 10. We were standing on the island just outside the Ben Thanh Market with traffic rushing past to every side of us, in front and behind. The other thing that shocked me about Vietnam was the price. my whole family went for a full-on 60-minute massage which cost just 100,000 dong (around ₹350).

The vietnamese food is really great but it got me sick to my stomach so i stuck to indian food, and no, finding indian food is really difficult in that country. We did every thing what a tourist would do, massages, hair braids, street shopping, street food. At last we visited the Vinpearl water park, which was so great, because it was on a separate island, so we had to take a speed boat to reach it.

On a regular day I wake up and make a jug of coffee. On good days I wake up and cook cheesy eggs and hash browned potatoes. I have some ankle swelling today. Luke Skywalker vasilitis again. I am going to have to keep a close eye on it, my ankles are as sore as they can be . Yesterday I did everything except the dishes. That's for today's itinerary. I felt good yesterday, a condition so rare its worthy of mention. I have taken those days, not coincidentally on days I have my full range of meds, to catching up on the 'keep the manor going' days. When artemesia is down sick with me, its my duty to pick up the slack, and I do. Continually, she tries to thank me, but every time I tell her it is not something that she needs to thank me for. I took vows pertaining to this 36 years ago. I'm still comfortable with my decision. She can relax. She needs the rest. And it affords me the freedom to add swarthy amounts of fresh garlic to my potato. My grandfather came to the us as a small boy after his father was discharged just after ww1. He hated garlic,......and I mean a really down and dirty, low kind of hate that only comes from chambers of trauma and disgrace. He would tell me about how every day before school, even after he had been brought to America, he would be forced to sit and eat a whole ass raw bulb of garlic, completely straight up, too. So he was a greek who hated garlic and I was the wayward hippy grandson, always ready to plug into my Greek heritage, and always ready to overdose on garlic.

He got picked on being the little Greek boy who always smells like garlic. He would always drill it home, we were american first and Greek second. Meanwhile, he is telling me this when I am watching live footage of the Vietnam war on the evening news. 7 year old me knew something was wrong.

Day 2: Lily and the Water Puppets

Today I got to meet Lily, the tour designer from Vietnam Stay (vietnamstay.com) who custom designed this itinerary for me. I’ll freely admit that I must be the most peculiar client Lily’s ever had. To begin with, most people come to Southeast Asia in groups, and I was fairly adamant that I wanted a “group tour … without the group.” In other words, I wanted all the advantages of a package tour (prearranged hotels, transportation, guides, and the like), but I would be the only traveler, a “party of one” for the entire month. She had to admit that was a rare request.

But Lily brought me the most lovely birthday present: a lacquer painting of the boy playing a flute on the back of a water buffalo, which is one of the most iconic images you find in Vietnam.

We drank tea and chatted, but then it was time for me to go to my sole activity of the day: a water puppet show at the Thang Long Theater.

Water puppets have a long tradition in Vietnam, and the Thang Long Theater is probably the most famous purveyor of this type of entertainment. The singers and musicians are live.

The puppeteers operate the puppets from behind a curtain by means of tubes that pass under the water.

Each performance is 50 minutes long, and they’re offered 365 days a year. Appropriately enough, one of the first parts of the performance was dedicated to the boy playing his flute on the back of a water buffalo.

To my mind, the dragon dance was the most dramatic part of the performance.

All in all, the day was quite leisurely, a good opportunity to adjust to the time change and absorb the environment. Starting tomorrow, the real adventure begins.
