Rudolf Berthold (Part 1)

Disclaimer: This will have 3 parts as it will be longer than I thought it would be. The first part is about Bertholds early life and military career up to the end of 1915 when Bertholds fighter pilot career starts, the second part will be 1916 to 1918 where major events will be outlined as well as a documentation of his many injuries. The third part will concentrate on his activities after the war and his controversial death.

I will write down the books from which I took the information for this post at the end of Part 3.

Rudolf Berthold was born on 24th March 1891 in Ditterswind, Franconia (Bavaria), German Empire. His full name was Oskar Gustav Rudolf Berthold but as was common at the time he was called by his third name Rudolf. His parents were from Saxony but at the time of Rudolfs birth his father was the Oberförster (Chief Forester) of the area around Ditterswind. He had seven siblings; closest to him was his sister Franziska; she worked as a nurse and took care of him during his many wounds (more to that in Part 2). He always had a very strong sense of duty towards his country and was a fervent patriot, so to no surprise, after graduating school at 19 he enrolled in the military. He joined the Saxon Infantry Regiment Graf Tauentzien von Wittenberg (3. Brandenburgisches) Nr. 20. In his spare time he was very involved in several youth movements, teaching young boys survival skills and instilling in them the same love he had for Germany.

In the summer of 1914 Berthold volunteered for flight training at Halberstadt. Here he trained to be an observer with other ambitious comrades, among them Oswald Boelcke. After the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, tensions between the European powers reached a boiling point and he was recalled to his infantry regiment. He was able to formally transfer to the Fliegertruppen in July 1914 with the goal to become a pilot. The declaration of war put a stop to his plans as he was called to report as an observer to the Royal Saxon Air Base at Grossenhain.

Rudolf Bertholds war career began with Feldflieger-Abteilung 23 (FFA 23), which was part of General von Bülows 2nd Army. He flew reconnaissance on the Western front. Already in mid-August he almost became a prisoner of war when he and his pilot Leutnant Viehweger had to make an emergency landing 15 km from the front in enemy territory. Berthold and Viehweger hid in the woods and managed to make contact with a German patrol the next day. They were able to bring the airplane back to the German lines. 

One of his notable early feats was that he discovered a gap between the 1st and 2nd Army during the Battle of the Marne which the French used to thrust into the gap to get behind the German lines. Bertholds discovery led to a change of plans and earned Berthold the Iron Cross 2nd Class. This was followed shortly by the Iron Cross 1st class with Berthold being the second soldier of the 2nd Army to receive it only after Bülow.

After the deaths of some pilots of FFA 23 Berthold was sent to Etappen-Flugzeug-Park 2 to be trained as a pilot. Here he met Hans-Joachim Buddecke who will become his closest friend.

In January 1915 Berthold fulfilled his dream by passing all necessary tests. In his diary he noted that being the one who flies the plane is so important to him because he doesn´t want to have to rely on someone else. He was already infame as a demanding observer who didn´t tolerate a pilot who turns around on a mission because of some bad weather. Now he was the one in full control. At this point of the war the majority of German planes where not yet equipped with weapons. According to Berthold himself the observers were only armed with pistols and rifles. That changed in mid-1915 when machine guns where finally installed.

After being attacked by French planes Berthold and his crew crashed badly with one of the observers dying. This was a turning point for Berthold; from then on, he wanted to fly only on his own so that his decisions (and his mistakes) while flying and fighting would only affect himself.

Immelmann and Boelcke started to become successful with their single seater Fokker Eindecker and Bertholds friend Buddecke was also able to bring down enemy aircraft with this plane. This motivated Berthold to get one for himself. Fighter Units were being established in late 1915 and he was assigned as the officer in charge of KEK Vaux. The Fokker Eindecker which proofed to be superior to enemy airplanes became the weapon of choice for the Fighter Units.

First challenges

9 August 1914

By order of the ADK of the 2nd Army, our division is to reconnoitre the Liège - Namur - Dinant stretch of the Maas and the area to the south as far as the Montjoie - Dinant line, in order to establish whether enemy forces are in this area and where our own cavalry divisions have advanced from Duffet ... We are not quite finished unloading yet. Nevertheless, it goes with feverish haste. Because every single aeroplane crew competes with the others, because each wants to do the first flight over the enemy ... My Feldflieger-Abteilung 23! We know each other partly from training. The division consists of six aircraft, their leader and adjutants, seven pilots and just as many observers. All nice guys! Our leader, Vogel von Falckenstein, is a true Prussian soldier and a proven old pilot. It is only thanks to his flying experience and tireless work that everything went so smoothly. For as well as mobilisation worked with the other troops, it was just as bad with the airmen. One partial excuse is that we are still a very young, inexperienced troop. The brand-new planes were also bad, hardly flyable. And yet ! No obstacle was so great that it could not be easily overcome with a willingness to serve ... !

15 August 1914

Bad weather today. And yet we are flying. We get as far as the Meuse. How proud I am! After all, I am the first of the division to bring the first report of the enemy far ahead of our cavalry! The bullet holes in the wings show that we were by no means pleasant to the enemy; all too closely we had peeped into their cards. The ADK was surprised: they had, perhaps with some justification, not thought too much of aviation. So our flight showed that the aircraft, through its reconnaissance, had to be of decisive importance for the troops. The flight itself was nice but difficult. Our airfield at Montjoie was the worst possible spot. To the south stretched great forests, to the east and west were steep slopes, and to the north lay a village. It seemed very doubtful whether we would be able to make the first start with our faulty machine. When we started, I closed my eyes so as not to see immediately that we were stuck somewhere or otherwise stopped. But it worked quite well... Our mission was: Reconnaissance on the Namur - Dinant line! At all events we should try to advance to this line, which the cavalry had twice failed to do. Other flying comrades had had to turn back twice because of bad weather on this flight. I said to myself: The flight must be carried out! So I asked for the job with all certainty... The day came with Belgian fog. You have to know him: impenetrable, he creeps coldly into your skin. We wait for hours for the fog to clear. Finally clearing up around noon, cloud formation. We breathe relieved. My pilot, Leutnant Viehweger, and I  get the plane out and an hour later we are already over the Ardennes, towards Givet. Orientation was very difficult. Only at an altitude of 1000 meters did we have a clearer view, but what we saw was forest, endless forest, no railway line, no river, no valley. At times dense fog took all view. Then I said to myself: Hold on at all costs! After all, I had already solved more difficult flying tasks at home in peacetime. Finally the forest below thinned out. Glittering railway lines leave their mark. Far down on the Meuse I saw the enemy working feverishly. They seem surprised by us on their flank, since large bodies of troops are still missing. I calculate and draw. The engine runs fine. It is very gusty. My pilot flies well. I signal towards north. There, a crack, a little white cloud and one more! A peculiar cracking sound in left flight, so shrapnel after all! The anti-aircraft guns almost got us! Back home after a three-hour flight, everyone was at the field ... .

Thomas bei Caravaggio

Jeder hat einen Sinn für das decorum. You always sense the decorum. Die rhetorischen Mainzelmänner, etwa Viehweg, hat einen Sinn für das decorum. Sogar die Frankfurter Schule Abteilung Nichtbenjamin (z.B. Klaus Günther mit dem Buch für den Sinn für Angemessenheit) hat einen Sinn für das decorum, auch wenn man, gerade weil man nur limitiert etwas von mitbekommt. Partage du sense, so nennt Ranciere eine Technik, sinnvoll und sinnlich zu scheiden, mit höheren und niederen Sinnen zu scheiden.

Decorum ist nonsense, wenn es Dada ist oder Lettrismus, aber auch dann, wenn es Pfingsten feiert und pentecostal argumentiert - und ab dem ersten Bier im Doktor Flotte ist das decorum ebenfalls nonsense, wenn nicht vorher schon Mai ist und die Bäume sowieso schon ausschlagen.

Der auf deutsch ungläubige Thomas hat einen Sinn für Übertragung und das decorum. Rührend, wie er in der Wunde rührt. Nonsense ist in dem Sinne sinnlos, dass da der Sinn los ist, lose sitzt oder lose verläuft. Das decorum mag die einen beruhigen, vielleicht sogar Schlaf geben wie die Goldberg-Variationen das sollten, die anderen macht es wach oder nervös, aber alle haben einen Sinn für das decorum.

Mit der Nervosität und der Beruhigung, das soll jetzt mal ein strenge Forderung sein, kann man gelassen umgehen. Mit dem Schlafen und Wachen auch, es gibt Kalender, die das mittragen, dass man manchmal schlafen muss und manchmal wach sein. Das alles lehren die Letter, die Mahle und die klammen Sendungen. Aber die Sterne lehren es auch.

Das ist meine Arbeitsthese, die in ihrem decorum die einen Leser beruhigt - die sagen dann, der Herr Steinhauer arbeitet vertragsgemäß zur Rechtstheorie, zu einer rhetorischen Rechtstheorie und einer Theorie juridischer Kulturtechniken , dabei wie immer zu Recht und Bildern (Bällen/ Bauten/ Boliden).

Die anderen sagen, darin könnte ein Kündigunsgrund liegen. Wer als Jurist nicht strittig arbeiten kann, hat eventuell den Beruf verfehlt. Wer nicht so arbeitet, dass die einen in seiner Arbeit eine Erfüllung sehen und die anderen einen Kündigungsgrund, abeitet nicht richtig juristisch und nicht richtig juridisch. Man muss schon wissen, was Grenzen sind, von allen Seiten.

So ist Caravaggios Bild ein Bild zu römischen Rechten und Bildern, sogar zur römischen Frage: durch juridische Kulturtechnik. Die Wunde, die Bresche, das Trauma: das sind Figuren, die nicht nur hier auftauchen, auch im Werk anderer (etwa als Fragment). Etwas ist brüchig, darum brauchen wir Rechte. Etwas fehlt, darum brauchen wir Rechte. Etwas ist zuviel, darum brauchen wir Rechte. Und am besten glauben wir daran, dass das Recht hilft. Am besten lassen wir uns auf eine Welt ein, die widerständig und insistierend ist. Ruhe ist dabei die erste Bürgerpflicht und alles andere ist dabei die Pflicht von allen anderen.

Caravaggio malt das Bild 1601. Es heißt auf deutsch Der ungläubige Thomas. Meine These: Im Westen lesen die leute Bilder anders als im Osten, weil sowieso überall anders gelesen wird. In meinem Zettelkasten ist daraus eine kleine Theorie der Bildersammlung entstanden: In Deutschland glaubt man, dass die Bildersammlungen Museen sind, die Museen Musen und die Musen nette Damen. Stimmt ja auch irgendwie, hübsche und wertvolle, sogar wirklich wichtige Dinge an der Tafel. Allerdings haben solche Sammlungen Aby Warburg nicht genügt, manchmal übertreibt er und sagt, damit wolle er sich nicht mehr beschäftigen (wie K. im Kapitel Der Dom), lieber mit Tanzenden in New Mexico. Dann wieder wird er entweder milder oder wilder (m ist ein verkehrtes w): Wenn diese Bilder auch tanzen wie in New Mexico, dann will ich mich auch damit beschäftigen. Warburg ist darin ganz bei den Baseler Archäologen, denen von oben am Rhein in Frankreichnähe, dem Bachofen, Burkhardt, dem Nietzsche, der Ute Holl und dem Markus Krajewski. Nietzsche bringt den Wunsch mit ein Kind zum Weihnachtsmann, er schreibt auf Wunschzettel, er wolle einen Gott, der tanzt.

Der Warburg, den halte ich für einen halbwestlichen, halböstlichen, halbnörlichen, halbsüdlichen Weihnachtsmann, er auch. Ich halte ihn für einen Pendler. Der wird Bildersammlungen sich manchmal anschauen, wie die russischen Arbeiter mit ihren Kindern, die ich 1993 vor solchen Bildern gesehen habe: Erbleichend, ermahnend, erklärend, beschwichtigend, erziehen, mal stossend, mal streichelnd. Jedes Bild eine Institution, dabei immer auch Zeughaus, also Waffenkammer.

Nur weil das Caravaggio ist, heißt das nicht, dass man nicht etwas vom Alltag und seinem Krach in diesem Bild sieht. Da, wo Wunde/ Bresche ist oder Stadttor, von mir aus Triumphbogen, da sind verengte Wege, die limitieren und kanalisieren, Schub geben und hemmen. Verwundet ist jeder, traumatisiert jeder, jedem fehlt dies und ist das zuviel. Ino Augsberg hat in seinem Buch von der Lesbar nochmal an Carls Schmitts Trauma erinnert. Nicht jeder zeigt seine Wunde, muss er auch nicht, manchen ist das Liturgie, wie etwa dem Joseph Beuys. Einfach wahr, gut und schön, ist es nicht, dass man ins Leben geworfen wird und dann die Nabelschnur durchtrennt wird. Es ist aber multiplicit schön, wahr und gut - und immer in Mustern, die (a-)dressieren und pol(aris)sieren. Dafür braucht man keine Juristen, aber Juristen haben dazu Geschichte und Theorie entworfen. Und es gibt Kulturtechniken, die damit routiniert umgehen lassen sollen. Eine davon nenne ich decorum, nomen actionis und Pathosformel: Begriff für eine Technik, die mustert, misst - und die passieren lässt.

Man kann solche Bilder persönlich nehmen, kann also vor dem Bild des ungläubigen Thomas sich sagen: Carravagio meint mich. Und man kann sich trotzdem davon distanzieren. Das nennt Warburg Distanzschaffen, es pendelt, gelingt mal mehr oder weniger. Die Technik ist die gleiche, egal ob jemand über Quintus Fabius Maximus, die Fabian Society oder oder mich persönlich in Texten schreibt, mich lobt oder kritisiert: Natürlich soll man das alles persönlich nehmen, sogar dann, wenn man nicht selber, sondern ein anderer Fabian gemeint ist oder wenn man zwar der richtige Adressat ist, aber nicht persönlich gemeint ist. Alles soll man persönlich in Empfang nehmen, an sich ran lassen, wenn es einem adressiert ist. In dem Sinne soll man alles persönlich nehmen, aber postwendend persönlich nehmen, polarisierend. Und man soll es tun, um das Distanzschaffen zu trainieren. So ein mimetisches Persönlichnehmen ist eine Kulturtechnik, die unter anderem kalendarisch organsiert wird, darum feiern ich zum Beispiel den 20. Januar, obwohl ich da bisher weder geboren noch gestorben bin und es nur der Tag der heiligen Fabian ist. Die Leser dürfen mitfeiern, ich nehme das persönlich, postwendend, tu quoque. Man darf sich verwechseln, aber nur zum Distanzschaffen. Man ist man selbst im übertragenen Sinn, schon der erste Thomas war ein Thomas im übertragenen Sinne.

Wie heißt dieses Bild in anderen Sprachen? Fangen wir nur bei dem Auto(r) an, sonst ist es too much, too soon. Carravagio ist der, der den scarlet-letter malt,die Scharte, die Schalung, die Schale, die Scharre, Schwarte, Schwarze oder Scharte, das Fleisch, das Auto (Car/Porsche), die Kirche (church) die Kur vague fährt/ führt, der wagt und verschlingen lässt. Carra vagio. DU KARRIERE, ICH WANDERE, oder kurz so: Du Tarzan, ich Juno.

Der Name Caravaggios klingt wie ausgedacht, ist er ja auch. Carravagio übersetzt Caravaggio und das übersetzt man im Juni am besten mit Traumwandler, im Dezember am besten mit einem traumatisierten und verschlingenden Aufschneider. Thomas ist bei ihm und er bei Thomas.

Wischen und Fischen

Portugal ist nicht das einzige Land, wo die Zitronen blühen und nicht das Land, wo die Polen drehen. Das ist im Einzugsgebiet einer nachlebenden Antike dasjenige Land, wo etwas in den äußeren Westen und Süden driftet, dort zieht und trägt. Der heilige Antonius spricht mit den Fischen, weil er Portugiesisch spricht. Heilig wurde er und starb er zwar in Padua, aber dahin ist er gependelt und pendelt seitdem zurück, denn die Kacheln, nach Markus Krajewski leicht waschbare Bauelemente des Gewissen(s), die ihn rührend zeigen, stammen aus Portugal. Er stammt aus einer Hafenstadt, woher denn sonst? Sein Distanzschaffen ist Distanzschiffen.

Antonius ist ein sonnig bestrahlter Tor, ein Portugiese, der kein Problem damit hat, zu sprechen, indem er mit dem Stab rührt (kontrafaktisch stabilisiert) und so die Fische (a-)dressiert, indem er sie polar(Aris)iert.

Die brasilianische Rhetorik erscheint aus deutscher Sicht wilder, die Hermeneutik eines Antonius surrealer, lettristischer, dadaistischer als vielleicht die von Joseph Esser oder gar von den notorischen Mainzelmännchen der rhetorischen Rechtstheorie, von Viehweg und seinem Gefolge. Ist das so? Mit dem Sekundären sieht man nicht unbedingt besser, aber unbedingt dienlicher, servierender und versierter, also drehender und wendiger.

Die Brasilianer scheinen mit ihren Messehallen, die am Ufer aufgereiht der Madonna von O gewidmet sind (Scheibenkleister!), mit ihrer Feier von São João dem unbeständigen Wissen der Zettel affiner als ...Matthias Jestaedt. Das kann aber täuschen. Immerhin macht der Jestaedt in seinem Libretto, dem kleinen Buch über das Verfasste hinter Verfasstem, auch aus Schlüsselbegriffen Schleusenbegriffe. Der wischt auch, wenn er was weiß - und man kann nicht ausschließen, dass er vom Wischen seines Wissens was weiß.

WAUSAU — The driver who struck and nearly killed a 22-year-old Wausau woman in July will appear Friday for sentencing on charges of hit and run causing great bodily harm.

Certain Love Island contestants have gone on to become extremely popular on social media over the years, accumulating millions of followers on Instagram in very short periods of time. The Love Island franchise was rebooted in 2015 in the UK. Six seasons later, it is one of the most successful dating competition series in the world, launching several international editions around the world. Alas, it is obvious that certain islanders have gone on to become way more popular than others.

When it comes to Love Island, the placement of a contestant on the show has little to do with the number of followers that they get after the show ends. Instead, the fans usually fall in love with an islander's looks, charisma, and sense of humor. Alas, those qualities unfortunately do not guarantee that a person can find love inside the Love Island villa. But thankfully these people gain a legion of fans after the show and do go on to find love and success outside of the show. On Instagram, it is clear which islanders are more popular with the fandom.

The most-followed American islander from the show is Kaitlynn Anderson with 1 million followers on the social network. Rounding out the Top 5 ranking are Caro Viehweg (477,000), Cely Vazquez (428,000), Johnny Middlebrooks (407,000), and Justine Ndiba (405,000). The Top 10 goes on to include Kyra Green (361,000), Mackenzie Dipman (320,000), Aissata Diallo (309,000), Caleb Corprew (286,000), and Kierstan Saulter (232,000). Islanders that could enter the Top 10 in the near future are Elizabeth Weber (220,000), Connor Trott (213,000), Moira Tumas (204,000), Calvin Cobb (200,000), and Laurel Goldman (161,000).

All things considered, the most popular Love Island contestants on Instagram all come from the original British series. Leading the pack is Molly-Mae Hague, who has 5.2 million followers. The Top 5 then features Dani Dyer (3.4 million), Tommy Fury (3.2 million), Maura Higgins (3.1 million), and Amber Gill (2.6 million). Rounding out the Top 10 are Olivia Bowen (2.5 million), Kem Cetinay (2.3 million), Chris Hughes (2.1 million), Jack Fincham (2 million), and Ovie Soko (1.9 million). Currently, Olivia Attwood is right behind Ovie, as she also has 1.9 million followers.
