So I didn’t save the refinery workers this time since some people claimed the Zaeed killing Vido ending was the best and was so cool but that was straight up asseroni and cheeks. I’m never doing that shit again. It was so lame.

"In Time"
A short Vido/Zaeed story I wrote for a prompt on a discord server. And apparently its also the first fic of this ship on a Ao3 lol
Read on Ao3: "In Time"
800 words. Fluff.
.
The cargo bay in Bekenstein was still on fire. The sound of distant gunfire, exploding barrels of fuel and ammunition and the groan of dead and dying mercenaries filled the air.
Amidst the chaos of the crumbling building, 2 men clad in worn and charred blue armour with a white oval in the chest piece stood near a large container that had been cut in half. One of the men stood guard as the other pulled out several metallic cylinders from one of the broken crates inside it.
“Not rushing you or anything, Massani, but I think it’d be in our interests to be gone by the time the fire gets here”
“I don’t know. Maybe the fire could fix that mug of yours”
“As if you’d let this precious mug get harmed”
Zaeed let out a half chuckle before throwing out a large metallic box, the numbers XLR-8 emblazoned on the side.
“That 's the one the goddamn elcor asked for. Let’s go before… wait”
“Sure thing. Take all the time you need. Get acquainted with the box. You’ll be fused to it soon enough once the flames get us”
A grunt of effort, and Zaeed threw out of the container another metallic box with a transparent lid.
“Well. Would you look at that”
"Haven't seen one of these in a long time" Zaeed said amidst grunts of effort as he removed the chunks of rubble that had fallen over the box. Inside of it, a small wooden guitar rested, carefully cushioned by some protecting foam inside the box “Let’s bolt before we get all crispy”
Santiago grabbed the box and ran with Massani towards the waiting gunship outside the building.
Later that day, the men sat around a small fire in the middle of the camp, the cold wind of the planet Sanctum making the members of the Blue Suns huddle around the electrical stoves and fires they had around, the light of the flames creating shadows that danced in the night.
"Remember what happened to the last one you had?" Vido’s coy tone evident as he sent out orders to the mercs through his omnitool.
"I bashed it over the head of that turian who was attacking you outside that shithole bar in the Citadel  Fitting that that's how I met you, by saving your ass. And you never did get me another goddamn guitar" Massani answered as he oiled and cleaned the disassembled pieces of his Jessie, the trusted gun that was always by his side.
"Well, I took you on this mission and you found a guitar. I keep my promises, Zaaed"
"Sure you do, lucky bastard"
"I'd say you were the lucky one. Look where you are now. The co leader of one of the most successful mercenary organizations in the Verge and the Terminus. And I know you're happy you saved my ass. What would you do without it?"
"I’d be enjoying a peaceful goddamn life as a farmer in Elysium, of course"
Vido planted a quick kiss on Massani’s lips, the mercenary answering it with a deeper kiss of his own.
“Why don’t you play something? For old times sake”
“‘Old times’. You’re in your 30s, shithead”
“We’re old spirits, you and me, Zaeed. That’s why we get along so well” Vido replied as he rested his head on Massani’s shoulder, his hand softly moving across the man’s brown hair “Now play something and stop being so grumpy”
Massani smiled as he grabbed the guitar. Giving a quick stroke to the chords, the sound of the instrument was carried across the camp. The thought of a human instrument being played for the first time in a world so far away from Earth wasn’t lost on him. Clearing his throat with a quick cough, the scarred fingers in Massani’s hand started moving across the guitar, the tune and sounds of the music filling the air as his eyes closed, the memories of the song he had heard so long ago coming to his mind once more.
“I can hear what you're thinkin'
All your doubts and fears
And if you look in my eyes
In time, you'll find the reason I'm here”
“And in time, all things shall pass away
In time, you may come back some day
To live once more or die once more
But in time, your time will be no more”
Vido’s eyes seemed to get lost in the distance as he heard Zaeed’s song. But Massani didn’t notice. He played his guitar, while the man he loved rested by his side, ready to face whatever challenges came their way.
Life was good. For the first time in a very long time, life was actually good.
He wondered how long it would last.
“I can hear what you’re thinking”

I actually have the headcanon that Garrus and Zaeed form a friendship during ME2 and it is Garrus who helps Zaeed take down Vido. Garrus, being Archangel, probably also wants this man dead.
More Mass Effect
I have a little beef with the Trilogy, continuity wise.
Vido Santiago. The asshole who is the head of the Blue Suns gang as a whole and co-founder with Zaeed.
For Zaeed's loyalty mission, you can either go directly after Vido or save the refinery workers. I know Bioware wanted to force players to choose one and sacrifice the other to play on the morality scale that all of us stuck with for our playthroughs. I always hated that if you help the refinery workers, you don't get a chance to help Zaeed get Vido after he escapes Zorya.
Well... it's more like I hated how he's never spoken of ever again once we hit ME3. Especially if the bastard is still alive.
In ME3, we're introduced to Darner Visque who apparently is in charge of the Blue Suns now?? What happened with Vido if he's still alive? Was this an issue that had been overlooked bc Zaeed is a DLC character?
I'm not saying that they have to give us a whole cutscene with Vido dying, but at least give the guy a proper write off to tie up that loose end. You could've had Shepard ask Visque about Vido and he could've said that he killed him to take over. Or Zaeed had reached out to Liara since he knows she's the Shadow Broker and got Vosque's location from her and that's how he finally killed the little shit. Shepard could discover that Vido was killed by Cerberus on Omega after they took it over. Aria could've admitted to killing him or her sources told her that he got done in by the Reapers.
Idk. Maybe I'm just complaining. That or I just wanted to know that Zaeed finally got to put a bullet in him.
Good thing I already wrote the scene with Zaeed killing Vido after he escaped the refinery. Nothing like fixing canon w fanfic to give fictional characters the catharsis they deserve.

The moment you take Zaeed to Tuchanka after Grunt's coming of age, he actually disappears on the sly.
After some time of trying to track down his whereabouts, you discover that not only did he visit every single Krogan armory within a hundred miles at a speed that could only be described as "Santa Clausian", but within a few short hours, the story of how he survived his betrayal by Vido Santiago has already spread among the the "teenage" Krogan, who have started collectively referring to themselves as "Clan Zaeed" and have also pronounced the Angriest Mercenary In The Terminus Systems an "honorary Krogan" and "Clan Chief".
Wrex could put a stop to it and acknowledges that he probably should, but he's too busy laughing and shouting "WHERE'S THE LIE?" before giving Zaeed a commemorative bottle of Ryncol. Zaeed will later use said Ryncol to maintain his guns after he discovers that Tuchanka-made Moonshine-style Ryncol actually cleans carbon fouling and other gunk out of guns like NOTHING ELSE. For his part, Grunt insists that was Ryncol's original purpose, and nobody is sure if he's trolling or not.
Over a thousand years later, it is generally agreed by all Krogan that Zaeed Massani never actually died, per se, but rather just angrily climbed a ladder into the next world so he could beat the crap out of that one too, and his birth and death days are well-respected Krogan holidays, just like Shepard's.

Mass Effect 2 replay, exploring and part of Tali’s loyalty mission:
Phi Clio
-Cyllene – There’s an archaic helium-3 refueling station. This implies someone found the system by FTL, rather than the mass relay.
-Parnassus – It has geothermal and solar power station. There’s no history of the planet or its government in Citadel Council records. Since Cyllene is on record, it must have been deleted.
-So what the hell is the deal with this system?
My take away is that once the mass relay was discovered, the Parnassus population bailed because now it was too close to main traffic routes.
I am very curious. I suspect it was used by the Council for purposes they did not want officially known. The Citadel Archives probably has a history for it.
Enoch
-Laban – There are bunkers from an ancient race that were blown apart by a dreadnought class weapon.
-Mizraim – There’s debris orbiting the planet indicating that artificial satellites were destroyed
-Joab – Thousands of years ago a primate like spacefaring species were destroyed by massive orbital bombardment to their population centers. They’re only known because of time capsules buried outside of population centers.
-The buried time capsules implies the species knew death was coming and took some measure, however small, to ensure they would be remembered. Pretty tragic.
-Is this where Liara got the idea to leave behind time capsules in ME3, just in case her cycle also lost the fight against the reapers?
-The most likely culprit are Reapers.
This comes back to what level of civilization Reapers destroy. Was this race just barely spacefaring? This is the only planet I’m aware of where they’re remains exist.
If so, it comes back to my hypothesis that the Reapers are very thorough when exterminating civilizations to prolong the next harvest. They destroy races well before they develop mass effect technology.
-N7: Archaeological Dig Site – To the shock of no one, the planet is Earth like. At least the haze is an interesting twist.
-According to one of the terminals, Exo-Geni contacted “co-executive” Commander Vido Santiago of the Blue Suns for transport.
Nice call back to Zaeed’s loyalty mission.
-And the Prothean pyramid returns! With a side of the prothean vision Shepard received in ME1.
For such a short mission they crammed a lot of references into it.
-Who did Shepard give the Prothean pyramid to? I hope not Cerberus, but it’s not specified.
Normandy
-The email from Leslie, one of the woman on Aeia, has more reflection and emotion about Ronald than anything Jacob has expressed.
It’s frustrating. Bioware clearly can use the mission to generate turmoil, but they refuse to let Jacob experience it.
-Speaking of Jacob, he has more to say this time.
-If you go renegade (by asking how he’s handling the revelations about his father!), he actually calls out your attempt to talk him through any trauma he has. He points out you don’t have the qualifications to do so.
-If you go neutral or paragon, it’s all about the mission.
It’s interesting – he refuses to dwell on personal issues, doesn’t want to hear that everyone will die, but also rejects the false optimism that everything will be okay.
It’s over all a very grounded approach, but shows how Jacob is less malleable than some other characters. He has hard boundaries with Shepard and won’t let Shepard overstep them, even to reassure him.
Since one of Jacob’s boundaries is Nothing Personal Ever, it results in a character that feels more distant than the other squad mates. It’s not rejection of Shepard, exactly, so much as Jacob’s coping mechanism is to work and never do internal reflection.
So the issue Jacob is in most dire need of help with is the one he refuses to let Shepard assist on.
-Mordin has more post loyalty dialogues than any other crew member. Most only have their initial post dialogue loyalty and than one more conversation. I think this is Mordin’s third such conversation.
-Why did salarians develop unconscious social cues to discourage others from prying into secrets? What the hell kind of evolutionary tract results in that?
-Mordin presumably does not have any children of his own, since he’s using his favorite nephew to personalize the conflict.
Given Mordin’s prestige, that must be by choice. I’m sure he’d have no trouble obtaining a breeding contract.
-He’s very happy to be participating in an effort that involves no ethical conflicts. This is something he can be unambiguously proud of.
-Zaeed says he can’t blame Jacob’s father. You do what you need to do to survive.
I say Zaeed deserves a punch to the face. At no point was it necessary for Ronald’s survival to rape his crew.
Raheel-Leyya
-Migrant Fleet – The amount of care Tali’s mission has compared to Jacob’s is stark.
There is so much world building and complexity in just the first part of Tali’s mission alone.
By comparison, Jacob’s mission was barebones and straight forward. There was no world building and never any ambiguity about Ronald’s actions. The only question was how he would be treated.
-Tali specifying the Normandy is not clean is a nice touch. Of course that would be a standard question to ask all docking ships.
-The importance Quarians place on captains is also logical. Quarians live their entire lives in ships; it’s natural for captains to receive tremendous respect.
-Shepard, if they clarify they’re only a commander not a captain: Technically, I’m no longer in the Alliance military at all.
I suppose this is because Shepard was dead and not because they were/are a spectre?
It would have been nice if ME1 had ever explained Shepard’s status once they were made a spectre. See, it only takes one line!
-Miranda’s breather cannot possibly be acceptable for the quarians. Get the woman a helmet.
Actually, given the quarians’ history with Cerberus bringing her along probably isn’t much better than bringing Legion. The only saving grace is that the quarians might not know she’s officially with Cerberus.
-There are two layers to stripping Tali of her ship name.
First, it makes her look worse to the audience.
Second, it screws over her defense. Since Tali didn’t know she’d been stripped of her name, Shepard had no time to prepare a defense for her. Moreover, since Shepard is not familiar with quarian law or custom, it puts Tali at a huge disadvantage. They’re improvising on pure instinct what will work.
-If Shepard goes renegade when told they’re defending Tali, she says: They’re trying to turn the crowd against me.
Nice hint most players never see that choosing the option “Rally the crowd” later on can win Tali the trial.
-The trial comes across like a blatant attempt to get Shepard to reclaim the Alarei.
Every time I play it, I always think they could have saved a lot of trouble by shooting Shepard an email asking for help. No need for the farce that plays out.
-Why haven’t the geth fixed the Alarei yet? It should be well within their abilities.
-Once again, will Veetor ever complete his pilgrimage?
I doubt he’ll ever be in condition to do so. Quarians must have exceptions for those that cannot go on one.
-The dialogue with Kal’Rheegar discusses dark energy at length. The build up to it as a plot point in ME3 is incredibly obvious.
The fact it was dropped entirely in ME3 is a sign of Bioware’s decline in writing. You cannot have a concept built up that extensively and than do nothing with it without the end product feeling disjointed. They should have at least worked it into a side plot.
-Kal’Reegar on the effects of dark energy: Some days I think flying around in the fleet without a planet of our own is the right idea.
Like the Reapers?
This line is such obvious foreshadowing.
-Kal’Reegar straight up explains that the plan is for Tali to kill geth to build up audience support and find evidence to clear her name in the meantime.
I suppose Bioware felt the need to spell it out for anyone in the audience that missed it.
-Admiral Xen is awful, but I like her as a character. She’s quite pragmatic.
If Rael experimented on live geth, he was an idiot and no trial is necessary. If he did not, then this was a tragic accident and no trial is necessary.
-Her end goal is to regain control of the geth.
It’d be interesting to get her and TIM on the same call. I’m sure she’d be fascinated by Project Overlord.
And consider it appropriate that nearly everyone got killed by geth, because only idiots experiment on live geth. She would have done a much better job with a ship of crashed geth. Send it to her!
-Shal’Raan set up the trial carefully to best help Tali, even if it hurt Tali in the process. Not informing Tali of her father’s fate until mid trial was a necessary evil.
On a similar note, later on you can clear Tali’s name by handing over the evidence of her innocence. This helps Tali by preventing her from being exiled, but loses her loyalty since it tarnishes her father’s name.
Tali wants to be respected as much as cared for. Trampling over her desires to do what you consider best for her does not make her happy.
Does it remind her too much of her father, perhaps? He was so focused on providing for Tali that he never took the time to be with her.
-The “bubble” (environmental unit) quarian children are placed in from birth is so damn tragic. Logical and fantastic world building, but so incredibly sad.
Children need stimuli. They need physical contact with other people. But this must be limited for quarian children so they can survive.
Their parents need to work. How much time do quarian children spend away from their parents out of necessity? How small are their worlds for their own safety?
Receiving their first environmental suit must be a tremendous increase in freedom for them.
Ironic, as the rest of the galaxy considers their suits their prisons.
-The real purpose of the trial is whether the quarians will start colonization efforts or go to war to reclaim the homeworld.
Tali is just collateral damage in that debate. Is the risk in fighting the geth worth the possible reward?
-Koris guesses correctly that Rael experimented on live geth. His mistake is assuming that Tali was also aware of that.
-He also calls correctly that going to war could end with the fleet dying over the homeworld.
-Koris is extremely sympathetic to the geth. That he was made an admiral shows that a much more significant portion of the quarians must be sympathetic to them than we see.

Jake Shepard was born and raised on Mindoir, a small border colony in the Attican Traverse. When he was sixteen, batarian slavers raided Mindoir, slaughtering his family and friends. He was saved by a passing Alliance patrol, and he enlisted with the military a few years later. Early in his military career, he found himself facing an overwhelming enemy force. He risked his own life to save his fellow soldiers and defeat the enemy despite the impossible odds. His bravery and heroism earned him medals and recognition from the Alliance fleet. Hey! For the oc questions on the forms of love: eros - 3, philia - 5, agape - 5, philautia - 3 ❤️
Thank you so much ❤️
eros - 3
How do they feel about public displays of romantic affection? Does it make them uncomfortable? How do they feel if a romantic partner kisses them in public?
Vivien Shepard isn‘t against locking arms, chaste kisses, hugging and similar displays of affection that are relatively ‚tame‘ but she won‘t be making out or share a heated kiss in public. It‘s just something that feels super odd to her — she‘s a soldier, and if you wanted to fraternize in the Alliance (which wasn‘t allowed) you had to keep it low profile. Plus she simply thinks some things should be kept in private rooms.
philia - 5
What is their most fervent wish for their best friend(s)? How far would they go to make it happen?
For Miranda, that she gets to live a happy life with her sister post Reaper-war. Shepard cares deeply about Miranda and would do anything she can to ensure Miranda and her sister are safe.
agape - 5
Does your OC find it easy to empathise with their enemies? Or do they see it as important to dehumanise them in order to combat them with sufficient determination?
Vivien will try to use diplomacy on sentient enemies whenever she can, but if her enemy is unwilling to cooperate or beyond the point where it would be reasonable to even consider diplomacy (people like Vido Santiago, Henry Lawson, Kai Leng), she won‘t really see them as more than say, a Collector or husk.
She‘s generally pretty empathetic but she‘s been through so much shit, having lost fellow comrades at the hands of slavers and pirates, that she just lacks any empathy for certain individuals. She wouldn‘t spare them even if they begged for their life.
So someone like Wrex, for example, a trusted friend, Vivien won‘t accept as her enemy so easily- hence she talked Wrex into dropping that gun back on Virmire. Had she shot him, she would have felt bad about it, but she would not have regretted it. Vivien sees the bigger picture. Were she not able to compartmentalize she wouldn‘t have made it to Spectre status.
philautia - 3
How does your OC feel about one night stands? Have they ever enjoyed a night of passionate romance with a stranger? Is this something they are quite keen on recreationally? Or only something they might engage in under specific circumstances (such as the eve of a battle or after a difficult breakup)?
She‘s demisexual, so she isn‘t into one night stands. Vivien doesn‘t get the whole sexual attraction based off someone‘s physical appearance thing - growing up she felt quite odd due to that and in addition due to being a lesbian. Which is fully accepted in the 22nd century, but still a minority.

RATING: Explicit (Mentions of Graphic Violence, Brief Mentions of Smut) Word Count/Chapters: 52k, 5 Chapters Pairing: None Characters: Female Shepard, Zaeed Massani
“You’d get us involved with the goddamn fucking Marauders? You know exactly what they’re doing out on the edge of the Traverse. Trying to push into the Hades Nexus. Capture more fucking humans for slave trading. They’re burning down fucking colonies, Santiago. Slaughtering families like it’s goddamn nothing at all. You want the Suns involved with that kind of shit? We’re not about that. We’ve never been about that.” A shake of his head. A huff of Vido’s own breath as his snapped back around to face him. A new fire in his eyes. Fury, scorn… maybe something he’d never even seen before. But he was so goddamn far past gone, he should have realized it sooner. "It ain’t about that, Massani. Dezda’s Marauders are the smart fuckin’ option now. Cheaper labor. They know their shit. Know how to transport. Can handle smuggling for us… zero fuckin’ issues. You think that kinda shit was easy to find out here? You know how many creds we can save gettin’ involved with them instead of the fuckers on station? Who gives a shit if some little piss-fuckin’ colonists end up gettin’ worked to the bone out past the inner relays? Not the Council. Why the fuck should we?” A scoff from him this time. He couldn’t believe how quickly the man he’d once trusted with his life would sell his soul to the fucking devil. His partner. The only person he’d ever trusted. The mercenary outfit they’d built together, and he wanted to sell it out to fucking Batarian slavers. Like it was nothing more than a common fucking street gang. "So you’re gonna take every fucking thing we built? And sell it to those little fucking terrorists? And for what? A deal on cheaper goddamn labor? I always knew you were a bastard, Santiago. Never thought you’d lie down in bed with goddamn fucking terrorists. Never thought you were a coward.” A crowd had started gathering by that point. Other Suns members. People slightly down the totem pole. Their disagreement had drawn the attention of everyone else in the facility, but all he saw from Vido was a sharp little smirk tugging its’ way across the corners of his lips. And then a shrug. "I’ve never given two shits about your opinion of me, Massani. You were always some old bastard merc… too stuck in his ways. Too fuckin’ softhearted. Never had the guts to do the shit that mattered. Always content to pussy-out on anything that really counted. All you are is some old fuckin’ mutt, still leashed to the old rules. The old values. The old ways. The Suns? They never belonged to you. We took a vote. We already decided.” Another smirk and he just as quickly brandished the Karpov strapped to his hip. He hadn’t had enough time to react and grab his own. Why would he? He hadn’t expected Vido to pull a gun on him. They were partners. Someone he’d trusted with his life. They’d built the Suns together. “You’ve been overruled.”

1, 19 and 27 from first fifty shep questions if you’re doing em!
1. Why did Shepard enlist? Any regrets?
Basically... Bex was in a bar fight instigated by the then-current leader of the 10th Street Reds, who blamed her for his father and brother's deaths (though they were both killed by Vido Santiago a decade earlier). Supposedly one of the Reds was an undercover cop, who ended up in a coma. So not only did she have the Reds gunning for her, but Vido, as well as at least some of the London police force. The father of one of Bex's friends from BAaT, at the time a major in the Alliance, pulled strings to allow her to enlist (helped by the fact she's a biotic, obviously). And it was the lesser of evils, though she'd sworn since she was a child she'd never have anything to do with the Alliance.
As for regrets, surprisingly, not many. By the time she got out of boot camp, she decided she wanted to see how far she could get. And well, now many years later, she's married to Hackett so....
19. Are there any companions your Shepard just absolutely cannot vibe with or relate to?
None so far, really. It took her a bit to warm up to Ashley and Garrus, but she's great friends with both now. Also Liara. But again, they got past that.
I think she may not jive with Samara and Thane at first, especially Thane because the whole "left his kid" thing will bring back painful memories of her own childhood. But she'll likely work past it.
She absolutely cannot abide Miranda, but as she's not with Cerberus, they won't be on the same ship together, ever, and will probably only interact maybe one other time.
27. Do they have any pet peeves?
So so so so many. She's basically a walking list of pet peeves. (Do i know what any of them are? Only one: parents who don't let their kids have autonomy, within reason, over their hair and clothing choices)

I heard there was cut dialogue where Zaeed hunted him down between games, but that version does sound more interesting!
Here’s how I imagine it going down (truncated version): Aria asks Shepard to bring all three leaders of the gangs, Eclipse, Blue Suns, and Blood Pack, to heel. Shepard plays nice about it (we need the allies after all), but thinks, “Leader of the Blue Suns, huh?” Go find Zaeed hunting down Korlack Din -> “I found out where Vido Santiago is.” “Well, what the hell are you waiting for, Shepard? Let’s go get that bastard.” *Boom* Vido is gone. Zaeed gets his revenge and enough money to retire on. Zaeed could take control but then upon learning about Aria being his boss lady, he’s like “I’ll pass, Shepard. The further away from that bitch I am, the better. Besides, I got my old crew back together. I would rather work for you and put another fighter in your corner. Aria can have the bloody Suns and drown ‘em for all I care.”

Karen Shepard grew up as an orphan raised on the streets of one of the great megatropolises of Earth. She escaped the life of petty crime and underworld gangs by enlisting in the Alliance military when she was eighteen. Throughout her military career, she has held fast to one basic rule: get the job done. She's been called cold, calculating and brutal. Her reputation for ruthless efficiency makes her fellow soldiers wary of her- but when failure is not an option, the military goes to her first.
Shepard had the personality of a Renegade
Shepard's class was a Soldier, specialising in guns
Mass Effect

Shepard killed the Zhu's Hope colonists, believing them lost to the influence of the Thorian
Shepard killed the Rachni Queen on Noveria
Shepard killed Wrex, and left Kaidan to die on Virmire
