Munday Emojis || Accepting!
Tumblr media
📺- Favourite TV show?
The X-Files. It's a comfort show from when I was a teenager. I would re-watch the entire series + the movies at least once or twice a year. Another comfort show of mine is Twin Peaks.
👣- What do you like to do in your spare time?
I stream! I play video games! I read! Sometimes I doodle and draw. I watch an ungodly amount of youtube videos. And of course, I roleplay here on tumblr.
🍔- Favorite food?
Mackerel sashimi. Octopus. Seafood in general. I swear I was a cat in a former life. But I also really love my mom's popeye soup - it's basically chicken noodle soup with homemade noodles.
🎥- Favorite movie?
That depends on the genre. Disney movies? Beauty and the Beast. Horror? 28 Days Later. Teen Romcom? To All The Boys I've Loved Before. Teen drama? The Breakfast Club. Ghibli film? Howl's Moving Castle. The list goes on and on.
I got Videodrome and Eraserhead from the criterion collection this past Christmas too. Both are awesome arthouse horror films.

1970s: Murderous Kids Continued
Our fixation on murderous children (and contentious marriages) continues, with an additional pivot toward what I like to call “God save us from psychoanalysts” because boy let me tell you, mental health professionals have not been portrayed in a particularly great light in films thus far!
This week was a pair of films I’d never seen before.
youtube
First off, The Brood (1979) by David Cronenberg.
Cronenberg is kind of the grand-daddy of body horror. I’m not sure if he fully invented the genre in film, but he sure did build on it in unique and horrifying ways. You might better know him for his later films Videodrome or The Fly.
Anyhoo, The Brood tells the story of a guy trying his best to take care of his daughter while his wife/ex-wife is locked up in a very intensive and experimental mental health program called “psychoplasmics,” through which patients apparently confront their problems with uncomfortably performative roleplay sessions. When the dad discovers bruises on his daughter’s back after visiting her mother, he becomes deeply concerned and goes to give the psychologist -- kind of a predatory quackpot, by all appearances -- a piece of his mind.
But things escalate quickly when the wife’s mother is attacked and killed in her home by a strange, malformed goblin-child. These attacks continue and escalate while the father delves deeper into understanding psychoplasmics and how all of it is deeply, horrifyingly connected.
Hard to say for certain what it’s about, in the end. Is it a misogynistic take on the evilness of women and the dangers of female pain and empowerment? Or is it a critical look at the way that men in power weaponize a woman’s trauma against her? The story’s bleak ending suggests there are no good answers, however you look at it.
I will say this for The Brood: I didn’t see any of it coming. That was a wild ride from beginning to end. As always, Cronenberg’s body horror effects are the star of the show and hold up to modern viewing in a way that only practical effects can. The score is quite effective, too, the film music debut of Howard Shore (who you might know as “that guy who did the music for LOTR”).
youtube
Next up was Alice, Sweet Alice, directed by Alfred Sole in 1976.
The premise: There are two sisters, Alice and Karen. Everybody loves Karen because she’s sweet and pretty. Everybody hates Alice because she’s weird and quiet and angry all the time. When Karen is brutally murdered on the day of her first communion, Alice is the obvious suspect...but what if she wasn’t actually the one responsible?
In the hands of a different director, and with a script that made a bit more sense, this concept could have been really interesting. I actually kind of hope this movie gets remade at some point because the core ideas are cool -- ideas about whether we doom our children by rushing to label them in certain ways, ideas about religion and sin and whether maybe those labels doom us too, ideas about how families in pain receive scorn or distrust or abuse from the people who should be giving them sympathy and aid.
Like I said, this movie could have successfully explored those things.
But it...doesn’t, really. Mostly it’s an over-long snooze-fest punctuated with the occasionally accidentally-comedic murder scene and a plot more twisted and convoluted than a ratking’s tail. It makes use of the “masked killer” trope to mislead its audience in a hamfisted way, it’s hard to keep all of the characters straight, and motives are really never addressed or understood in any way that makes sense. Also, unnervingly, people keep bizarrely sexualizing young Alice -- from the creepy landlord who tries to molest her, to the police interrogators who fixate on her breasts, to the hamfisted discussion of her menstruation -- and it’s not clear at all that this is supposed to be serving the narrative in any particular way.
I’m really not sure at all how any of these pieces are meant to fit together or why the choices were made the way they were.
Although, in my quest to better understand this film, I learned that it was the filmmaker’s second movie -- his first being an erotic film called Deep Sleep, which was confiscated for obscenity and became center of a major scandal (also, please do read that article because it’s wild, there is no way I can summarize this scenario in a brief sentence that will do it justice). After Alice, Sweet Alice, he made another adult film called Tanya’s Island, which has this description:
Tanya (Vanity) is a female model who lives with her boyfriend Lobo (Richard Sargent), a surrealist painter who is extremely violent. Subjected to Lobo's constant abuse, Tanya dreams of escaping to a desert island, and her dream comes true. The only other person on her island is an enormous blue-eyed man-ape (played by Don McLeod and voiced by Donny Burns) who emerged from one of Lobo's paintings. Tanya befriends the beast and nicknames him "Blue." Soon she begins to feels a strange attraction to the creature, which makes Lobo increasingly jealous in the real world. He becomes determined to capture the man-ape and put it in a cage.
Which seems kind of promising, actually, until you watch the trailer:
youtube
...Yeah.
Sole made one more movie, Pandemonium, which was a horror-parody with the tag-line, “Finally, a movie that is totally taste-free,” so maybe by this point Sole was realizing that his artistic vision was never going to jibe with the public at larger.
Amusingly enough, he turned away from directing and started working in production design, and still works as a production designer on TV shows like Castle, so, hey, good for him honestly.
(Another fun fact: This movie was the film debut of young Brooke Shields, who soon after would get a more robust role as...uh....a child prostitute in Pretty Baby. What the fuck even were the 1970s).
Anyway. You can skip this movie, but I’m glad that watching it gave me a reason to research this filmmaker a bit because the deeper I look the more batshit insane everything about this becomes.

Corey and Oats’s in… Mondo Bizarre Monster Adventure.
-----------------------------------------------------
Everyone’s favorite duo was a duo that wasn’t afraid of anything, except for maybe the dark but that was just one thing they were terrified of, it wasn’t all that bad for them though they loved learning about monsters and cult cinema and the duo were definitely in for a fun adventure this week, they were in their house at Nile Road with their friend Ratty who was a talking rat, Ratty and Corey were playing out an old school horror movie with Ratty pretending to be Vincent Price and Corey acting as Peter Lorre. In this little roleplay session they were acting out a situation in which as the two horror actors they were trapped in a spooky carnival setting.
That was when Mel came over to them and told them she had a magic surprise for them in the bedroom, Corey and Oats smiled as they followed her to the bedroom, Ratty came along with them as they saw what appeared to be a special passageway which lead to a special effects studio. When they got inside the studio, the duo decided to make some monster designs of their own.
“Oh thank you mommy, this is a dream come true.”
“You’re most welcome, Oatsie.”
Oats made an anthro horse-monster that was a pretty feminine gothic pegasus in a black and pink gown, making it look like a mix of the bride of Frankenstein and Fluttershy, he brought the monster to life and called her…Franklynhooves. The new pony-monster whinnied as she hugged Oats. ‘Thank you for bringing me to life, mommy’, she exclaimed.
Meanwhile Corey had found some cool movie monster masks to try on and he looked through all of them, he saw a dark and twisted looking Grinch mask…’Looks like these guys already started on making a mask of Blumhouse’s Grinch movie’, he saw a demon mask, a Freddy Krueger mask - which he tried on and he turned into Freddy Krueger but he remained as himself, he saw a reptilian-man mask resembling the Creeps from the Goosebump episode ‘Calling All Creeps’, he saw a mask that looked like Dr Marty with his face off from the mirror scene in Poltergeist, he even saw a Betelgeuse mask.
But then he also saw a mask of Gabriel from Malignant and he decided to put it on, as he did he felt the spirit of Gabriel enter his body as his body slowly began to alter. He felt himself stretching and growing taller but it was not painful and there was no body horror, there was only a little but it wasn’t too bad, his skin turned a deeper shade of red and became bumpy in some places.
He examined his outfit as he did so, in the process he slowly sprouted long black hair as his facial features distorted, he looked like he had a bit of a tumor on his face but not much of one as his eyes glowed and his teeth sharpened, his voice shifted a little but he still sounded like himself as his transformation finished. Upon looking in the mirror he had found he had become Gabriel, but he was still the microbe he always was and didn’t inherit any of the real Gabriel’s traits.
Meanwhile…Mel found a white dress in the costume closet and tried it, as she did her hair turned from brown to an auburn red color as it became longer and slightly curlier, her features also shifted as her canines shifted to become fangs and her eyes turned yellow, she didn’t to look to realize that she was turning into Amy Peterson, the vampiress from Fright Night. She was still herself though and wasn’t evil.
Ratty was looking at the posters and he saw posters for horror movies that had rats in them, specifically ‘Willard’ ‘Mulberry Street’, ‘Killer Rats’ and ‘Deadly Eyes’. He also had great interest in the Body Horror section as he picked out some favorites. ‘Ooh, yes…Tetsuo: The Iron Man, The Fly, Akira, Videodrome, Tusk…all good ones.’
Corey stopped by where he was and looked over at Ratty, getting an idea…he used his powers to possess someone who was going on the tour and he messed with the lighting with his electro-kinetic powers, he had to admit this was pretty fun. He then came across another horror character mask, he noticed it was one of Sam from Trick or Treat as he put it on.
As he did…he shrunk in size and his clothing changed into an identical copy of Sam’s and the mask even fused to his face, becoming Sam’s actual mask, it was a rather pleasant transformation and he giggled as he danced like the Sam sidestepper at Spirit Halloween. He looked over at Ratty and smiled. ‘Is that you in there, Corey?’ Sure is.’
After that the duo and Ratty decided to look at the makeup mirrors which were like the ones in Weta Workshop Unleashed. Ratty looked in the mirror and he saw himself turning into a twisted Ed Roth style demon version of himself. Oats whinnied as he saw this, they decided to have some monster snacks in the kitchen of the studio before returning to make some more monsters.
Oats found himself some pretty black roses and put them on his dress, as he did…he found himself turning into a half equine version of Constance from the Haunted Mansion attraction. ‘Now don’t you come after me with that ax.’ Corey teased. ‘Don’t you worry, I wouldn’t do that.’
The duo had all sorts of fun in the monster effects studio with Ratty, they loved it so much they didn’t want to leave. A couple of hours later, Mel beckoned to them as it was time to go home, they followed her and that is where they saw a tram car outside, they hopped onto the tram car and headed for home.
Once they had headed home, they arrived at Nile Road and that’s where they saw their microbe friends all waiting for them and they greeted them, they spent a bit of time in their new forms before returning to normal. ‘That was certainly fun.’ ‘Yeah, I loved getting to be all those different characters.’ ‘And I loved making monsters and making my newest adopted daughter.’ Oats added.
Speaking of Franklyn..she seemed to have followed the duo home as Corey turned around to see her, Oats whinnied as he hugged her, he always did love getting to be a mother figure. The group had fun in the afternoon, and a couple of hours later it was dinner time, when dinner came around Corey and Oats sat at the table and had some tasty food for dinner.
After dinner they played for a while and they all played around for several hours, they had a karaoke party and when it was the late night time came around, they finished their karaoke at around eight thirty and they went into the bedroom where they listened to music and had fun as per usual.
A couple of hours later they put on their night-clothes, brushed their teeth and went to bed where Oats and Corey snuggled up with Z’Dar the zombie virus microbe and they all had dreams of their monster making experience.
Coming this coming week…you can expect interstellar fun when they go to a galaxy far far away in ‘Corey and Oats’s Galactic Journey’, be enchanted by the lovely Princess Cinnamon in ‘Cinnamon: Princess of the Flower Forest’ and see our duo return to the adventure that started it all in ‘Return to Weta Workshop’, plus a couple of specials and side adventures on the side.

I shouldn't take it out on you, (Although I do think it is worth trying to think through how on earth this kind of scenario would actually happen) but I've been thinking a lot about this in the wake of the Federal response to protests in Portland, where they aren't fighting the actual protestors who exist, they're fighting this weird fantasy version of AntiFa that lives in their heads but that they just know must be out there somewhere.
And in the response of people in rural areas getting ready for the AntiFa invasion.
I mean, my town has had outside agitators come over here and get into fights. A guy who lived here, but participated in those right wing free speech protests murdered two people on the light rail in broad daylight, but the actual direction of factual violence doesn't matter compared to the imagined, hallucinatory videodrome version of power.
AntiFa must be planning to send busloads of vandals to small towns, regardless of what actually happens.
I was talking earlier about that question of how you know you have power, in that case in the context of Social Justice rhetoric in roleplaying games, but it's even more important here.
Like, what would it take to convince you that the Republicans could have enough power to block a radical Supreme Court nominee?
You can say that you believe that nothing exists outside of power but I don't think this is a sober analysis of who has power and where.
Something that probably belongs here right now: why on earth aren’t conservatives protesting the feds’ obvious overreach re: the anti-racism protestors nearly as much as they’re protesting the (much, much more reasonable) restrictions around COVID.*
Before I start: I need you to imagine, for a second, how you’d feel if a group of neo-Nazis moved into your local metro area. If they slapped horrible racist propaganda wall-to-wall, made the national news multiple times, looted and broke windows…. How you’d feel if they actively took over a chunk of the city, calling it an “autonomous zone”, and beating up anyone who tried to stop them.
how would you feel if law enforcement stood aside and let them do this crap? how would you feel if the ACLU came in to defend their legal right to do this? how would you feel if major conservative politicians came out in support of them, even justifying their looting, and it looked like lawmakers would cave to their demands?
I am not saying that the protestors are remotely morally equivalent to neo-Nazis. But I want you to take that fear, and hold onto it as you keep reading.
A lot of conservatives believe that anyone left of centre hates America as much as “terrorists” do. They believe ~leftists~ want to brainwash their children into hating America too, and are just minutes away from murdering anyone who disagrees with them.
…and, if I’m being honest, these beliefs are not entirely without merit. Leftists and liberals say “fuck America” all the time, and the number of times I’ve heard left-wing people say ‘nuke the South’ is unreal. if you take people who say that kind of crap at their word, they want anyone right of centre dead. and even if you don’t, even if you assume it’s all hyperbole– like, yeah, most of us want conservatives to ~give up their way of life~, because a lot of it assumes that everyone is just like them, and not everyone is.
they see us as morally equivalent to neo-Nazis or Terrorists ™. becuase they think, rightly or wrongly, that we want to terrorize them. we want to keep them from doing what they’ve always done, and teach their children to hate them. we want to murder them.
and the only thing stopping us from doing so, a lot of these people think, is law enforcement. most conservatives know people who work in law enforcement and/or the military. they know that those people are Like Them and want them to be safe. they know that cops want to keep them safe from terrorists and are only stopped by the namby-pamby milquetoast civilian government.
(yes, I just threw up in my mouth a little writing that.)
The government is supposed to keep Real Americans ™ safe from Terrorists ™. the fact that they didn’t under the Obama administration- that the Obama administration was full of people who’d actively talked about how they don’t like or trust America Because Racism, that they mostly just let protestors do their thing when they happened, that they actively supported ~leftists in academia~- that was all proof that the government was Out To Get Us.
Trump positioned himself as One Of Them. As someone who’d Drain The Swamp ™. as someone who’d stop all the bureaucrats who were getting in the way of cops ~keeping them safe from terrorists~. who’d be a big powerful leader with a big stick, etc.
in the heads of the people protesting COVID but Completely Fine with jackbooted thugs dragging away unarmed protestors, when it comes to the protestors, the government is actually doing their job for once. the government is using its force against ~terrorists~ instead of against ~real Americans~.
and the fact that the government could easily turn that force against them? not even on their radar. they think their dear leader has their best interests at heart, so of course they’ll be okay.
Nota bene:  i am not going to actively research what Fox/boomer facebook/Alex Jones/etc. are currently saying about this because i think if I do I will lose my goddamn mind. This is purely based on what I learnt growing up about the ~!!Conservative Mindset!!~. Some parts of this may be inaccurate or otherwise outdated, because I left the GOP in 2012.

1, 11, 13, 18, and 22, please! -theheadlessgroom
//Alright!! Thank you!
1. What made you decide to roleplay this muse?
In late 2016, a good friend and Roleplay partner of mine and I, who were both fans of Descendants and loved making ocs, came up with the concept of Descendants characters based on the Disney parks and obscure Disney franchises. We came up with a multitude of these characters (who went alongside our regular ocs of the more mainstream franchises) and individual stories for all of them, alongside their relationships with one another.
My first idea from this concept was to do a Haunted Mansion character, I tried to think of what would fit best and decided to go with my two favourite characters! The Beating Heart Bride and the Hatbox Ghost! With that Erika De Claire Pace was born (originally named Emma!)! Alongside various other characters, ghosts (yes, more mansion ocs were made! Including Conner Hatchaway (made by myself) and Micah Ravenswood (made by my friend) as well as some from the Tower of Terror and NMBC!), mermaids, cyborgs, monsters, pixies and various other interesting characters! (All is which I would love to introduce at some point).
I ended up growing a huge connection with Erika in particular as I was dealing with a very similar experience to her, recovering from a heavily abusive relationship (though in my case, only a friendship), recovering from an eating disorder, bullying and various other issues. Writing a character who was able to come out on top of these issues was really important for me and helped me to recover (“if I can write it, I can do it, surely!”). I wanted the chance to use this character more outside of our main Roleplay verse (and multiple AU’s), so I took the chance to make a tumblr blog for her! The rest was history!
11. What’s a thread you’d like to do in the near future?
Oh so many! I would love to do a few more threads in Auradon, or more in the Mansion of course!
But I especially would love to do more with AU’s! Especially my VK/Isle of the Lost AU, Mermaid AU, Victorian/Human AU or even the Modern/Human AU (such as what I’ve done with @theheadlessgroom )
13. Three of your favourite threads
- Videodrome with @theheadlessgroom - Oh. My. Gods. This was SO much fun! The Modern AU, Giggles as a fluffy little dog, the old man turned eldritch abomination trying to feed on Erika’s fears, Randall setting a building on fire!! I adored this thread and would love to see a follow up at some point!
- Welcome Home with @beatingheart-bride - this was just so heartwarming and was such a nice thread to work on Erika’s relationship with her mother, and definitely captured the feelings of coming home to your loved ones after a long journey or in Erika’s case, school semester.
- I also did a thread way back when this blog first began with @islesfairest where both Erika and Evie experienced their first sleepovers! It was a very short lived thread but it was nice seeing Erika actually having friends in Auradon and a positive experience, and who doesn’t love a good sleepover?!
18. Your muse’s theme song
This one has changed so much over time to a point I usually give Erika multiple and even have a playlist for her. However, one that’s always been consistent since the beginning, and which I consider her main theme song would have to be:
‘The Show Must Go On’ - Queen.
You can listen to it here -> https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uKLMYZlbIb8
22. Three interesting little tidbits or facts of your muse
1. Erika is actually left handed!
2. Erika’s fashion sense is quite alternative, wearing various styles inspired by Lolita Fashion, Cult Party Kei, Vintage (She favors the 1950’s style), Victorian Inspired, Renaissance Inspired, Gothic, Mori Kei/Cottagecore and various cute or girly styles, she also wears platforms practically all of the time.
3. Erika has a 4 octave vocal range and a strong vibrato, she was lucky enough to be classically trained which allows her to hit operatic notes- though she prefers much more modern styles of singing.
Thank you to @theheadlessgroom for the ask!\\
