A short discourse on advertisements that aired during the pandemic

The short advertisement entitled "Sama-sama sa distansya," published by Globe, is about how people during the pandemic need to distance themselves from others. To provide background information, the pandemic that struck three years ago happened because of the rampant spread of the virus COVID-19, which then evolved into numerous variants time after time. To counter the virus, the government imposed strict rules on avoiding close contact and quarantining ourselves if we are exposed to it so that we may not spread it further. When COVID-19 spread in the country and other nations, people had a hard time as they were forced to distance themselves from their families, friends, and loved ones. The reason we don't go near them is that we love them enough to keep them away from the dangers of being exposed to the virus. Similarly, because of our close relationships with other people, we need to constrain ourselves from permitting close contact with our loved ones if we want them to stay safe, away from the dangers that the virus might cause them. However, the distance was not a reason to disconnect ourselves from others as through distance, we found each other more by seeking the presence of others, and by doing so, we brought back the joy of bonding with each other. As I have watched the video, the intended audience for this is the general public in the Philippines. This is because, during the time the advertisement aired, there were strict measures when it came to safety regulations on how not to be affected by the virus, which included physically distancing at least 1 meter from each other (Word Health Organization, n.d.). These measures were for the general public to take note of, as we are all experiencing the same thing despite being in different parts of the country. The product "Globe" launched included regular postpaid plans, mobile data plans, prepaid promos, mobile internet, and broadband services (Global Data, n.d.). All of these mentioned have one thing in common: a way to communicate with other people. These products are good and will benefit the target audience because, in a time where we are physically distancing ourselves from others, communication is needed, and Globe offers multiple products that can help us communicate with people we want to connect with. Upon watching the video, media manipulation is present in this advertisement, as the advertisement captured the viewer's attention through an emotional appeal by filming the harsh reality of not being able to be close to our loved ones because of the pandemic. The advertisement tackled the emotions of each individual who is going through the exact same thing in a way that the advertisement would connect itself with the audience by delivering its message through poems that the public would engage with and listen to as they were easy to connect to. By employing crowd manipulation through the use of emotional appeal, the advertisement was successful in catching the attention of the audience. 

This advertisement by Jollibee, "A Message from the Future," is a well-written video that started as a story told from the future where a kid asked her grandfather how it was back then about the pandemic. The video told a story based on a father's perspective who lost his job because of the pandemic and witnessed his loved ones die, one after another, because of the virus. However, as time progressed during the pandemic, they found joy in the company of their family. This is a story where the narrator reminisces that while the pandemic is inevitably a cruel situation, even if we feel like our lives are being chased, together with our family, we can make the most of our memories together even through a pandemic. This video serves as a reminder not to take anything for granted. Our family has our backs when times get tough, no matter what may happen. Even if we do not know what tomorrow will bring, we should make the most of now and focus on the present because, by doing this, we will know what matters most to us. Overall, the advertisement emphasizes the value of family and the joy it brings when we are together, as they save us when things are not going well. The target audience for this short advertisement is families because this advertisement revolves around the value and importance of spending time with our families and loved ones. The product that Jollibee advertised is not necessarily the chicken itself but the joy it brings when we spend time with our families, whether having dinner together or doing usual family activities inside the house. This product of chicken joy and happiness by spending time with families is something that Jollibee wants to promote, and I firmly believe that promoting this helps the audience find hope and light should they be facing a depressing situation during the lockdown, which is why this product is a necessary good for them. Media manipulation is present in the advertisement as the video used crowd manipulation by influencing a large group of people through emotional appeal. Crowd manipulation is easily seen in the video because of how the narrator expresses his hardships. This, in turn, influences the intended target audience, as the film successfully captured the familiar Filipino experiences when it comes to the happenings during the pandemic, where we lost a lot of loved ones, felt lost and scared, and witnessed people lose their jobs. By telling a familiar and relatable story to Filipinos, the advertisement successfully promoted their product through emotional appeal to influence a large crowd.
