Aaah she looks amazing! It was really cool to see her come together!
"To what do I owe this rare vist, little cousin?"
Here's my entry for this months bird! @far-side-skies
Victoria "Tori" Stormis, one of the many results of Cyclonian's arranged marriages with other royal families in the region. Not having the honor curse of being heir to the throne, Victoria is sent to Cyclonia at the age of sixteen to start training to be the personal body guard of her younger cousins. Though, the connection is kept in the dark from most. She shares a close relationship with Princess Sansa, but her relationship with the empress of the terra is partly strained for reasons she can only make assumptions about or not know at all.
By the time the events of the show start to begin, Victoria is fully equipt and ready to take whatever measures she must in order to protect the royal family. Some even daring to whisper that she's nearly on par with the Terra's champion. I hope you like her! She was funny to draw.

As promised, here are some photos from the national aviary in Pittsburgh! Saw lots of wonderful birds there.
I also took a boat tour up in Maine and saw lots of Atlantic puffins! I also saw some razorbills, common eiders, common loons, Wilson's storm-petrels, an Arctic tern, and a black guillemot. And plenty of gulls of course!

Some Brown Sparrows
Bruce Fearing
Some brown sparrows who live
in the Bronx Zoo visit often
the captive Victoria Crested
Pheasant, visit captive Peacocks,
Cockatoos. They fly through bars
to visit also monkeys, jackals,
bears. They delouse themselves in
cage dust, shaking joyously;
they hunt for bread crumbs, seeds
or other tidbits. Briefly,
they lead free sparrow lives
and fly free.

Aaaah she looks lovely! Although knowing what she’s capable of, she terrifies me.
Welp...I'm on a trip without my markers...so I can't color my entry for this month.
Honestly completely blipped the dates and thought I'd have time after my trip oh well.
Meet Victoria Crown
28 years old
Anthropological researcher, specializing in ancient magic and rituals.
Happily works with cyclonia as they fund her research without question. Victoria enjoys attempting to recreate some of the magic rituals she finds evidence of in order to better understand them and the people who performed them.
She is not afraid of recreating any ritual even those that are considered dark or immoral. Everything is fair game for the sake of knowledge.
She gets along well and is good friends with Scrīc.

heyo I saw someone else post from Victoria, Australia and realised I can also do that lol
here's some crested pigeons, which are my favourite native bird here - they almost always hang out in pairs and look like little pickaxes when they peck stuff on the ground.
also have a bonus bad photo of a mysterious parrot I didn't recognise (same location)
thank you!! the parrot is hard to see but it looks similar to an orange bellied parrot…however those are critically endangered so pretty sure it’s just a similar species

Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria), family Columbidae (doves and pigeons)
One of several species of crowned pigeon, the Victoria crowned pigeon is easily recognized by the white tips on its crest. Of the crowned pigeons, it is also the most popularly kept in captivity.
Avifauna, taken July 2024

Alrighty and HERE ARE OUR CONTENDERS!!!
Tag for the polls: #bird battle
DISCLAIMER - I wrote the round one blurbs when I was very sick and half awake, so if you see any mistakes PLEASE TELL ME! Nicely, obviously, but I want to make sure they sound good for round 2. Thank you!
I know there’s a lot of them, but man there’s SO MANY GOOD BIRDS! There were a few times where people didn’t put what specific subspecies for some birds, so sometimes I’d have to choose one. I tried to choose one that represents that bird the best!
I don’t know when the polls will begin, I’m doing some research on the birds so that people can read about them before they vote.
If one of your favs didn’t make it in, don’t worry they’re a winner in my and your heart.
If you are wondering where the Pigeon (Rock Dove) is, THEY ARE THE FINAL CHAMPION! At the end of this bracket, the winner will face off against the mightily popular Rock Dove! Will they be able to beat such a tough challenger? We will see…
Also, a note on how I set this bracket up: I put all the birds in a numbered list and then used a number generator. I think the matchups we got were really interesting.

What kinds of doves should I look at for character inspo?
If you're looking for something colorful, I'd suggest types of green pigeons or fruit doves. Some cool ones are Cinnamon headed green pigeons, little green pigeons, yellow footed green pigeons, thick billed green pigeons, jambu fruit doves, spotted fruit doves, wompoo fruit doves, and yellow breasted fruit doves. Nicobar pigeons, Victoria crowned pigeons, and bronzewings are also cool. So are white breasted ground doves, cinnamon ground doves, and Lemon doves, as well as most types of imperial pigeons
If you want something with more neutral colors, I'd suggest banded fruit doves, namaqua doves, Silvery pigeons, Squatter pigeons, snow pigeons, Scaled pigeons, Christmas imperial pigeons, Zebra piegons, Crested pigeons, and topknot pigeons
Sorry I couldn't list more

Storm Hawks Bird OC Challenge - July 2023
Hey all! Welcome to the next bird challenge! This month we're looking at the Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria). I was actually torn between this and another bird right until the last minute, but this one won out because I discovered it first and have actually seen it in person at London Zoo. The other bird can get the spotlight next month.
Image from Wikipedia.
Named after the British monarch Queen Victoria, the Victoria crowned pigeon is known for its distinct white-tipped crest and the 'whooping' sounds it makes during the mating season. Its habitat is located in the lowland swamp forests of New Guinea, and they often travel in pairs or groups of three together.
The deadline this month is Wednesday the 26th of July. As always, rules and an optional colour palette can be found under the cut.
Minimum requirements for drawn entries to be put in the winner’s vote are a name, occupation, the character’s home/birth Terra and at least one paragraph (or about 100 words) of written backstory.
Minimum requirements for written (i.e. written dossiers without art, or mini-fics for the character) are 500 words including backstory and appearance. Feel free to make a mini-fic out of this challenge, I’ll make sure to link it with the final collage as well.
Entrants who are part of the Storm Hawks discord server will have the chance of getting a custom role for the next month! If you’re not part of the discord server, please ask for an invite if you’re interested.
You’re not expected to create a character from scratch for this challenge. If you’ve got an older character concept that’s been collecting dust or that you’d like to take the opportunity to revamp, feel free! The goal of this challenge is to inspire people.
Collaborations are allowed! Same rules apply, the only addition is that you and your partner(s) just need to make note of who was responsible for what part of the character
Make sure to tag me in your entries and also DM me with a link to your entry. Tumblr is not always reliable about notifications for this sort of thing, and I don’t want to risk missing anyone’s entries, so better safe than sorry.
The group collage of entries, and the winner’s vote are opt-in. Participation of those parts of this challenge are not mandatory.
The winner of the vote will receive a free sketch piece of their character from me.
