Cedar Waxwing
These birds get their name from a waxy secretion that comes from the tips of some of their wings. Although it is usually red, thus giving the red feather tips, some Cedar Waxwings are known to have orange tips, likely picked up from an introduced species of honeysuckle. They are specialized in eating fruit, and sometimes a cowbird placed into their nest will not survive because they are not prepared for such a fruit-centric diet. Learn More!
Victoria Crowned Pigeon
Their name commemorates the crowning of Queen Victoria, however they are native to parts of New Guinea and not england at all. They are a land dwelling pigeon, and are fond of eating fallen fruit. The males will often make aggressive displays towards other males, although they rarely hit one another. Learn More!

Animal of the Day!
Victoria Crowned-pigeon (Goura victoria)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Near Threatened
Habitat- Northern New Guinea
Size (Weight/Length)- 2 kg; 70 cm
Diet- Fruits; Seeds; Insects
Cool Facts- If you thought all pigeons were drab and gray, I would like to introduce the Victoria crowned-pigeon. Living in small groups, these pigeons walk along the forest floor in search of fallen fruits and on alert for crocodiles and snakes. When startled, Victoria crowned-pigeons shoot straight up and find the nearest branch to cling onto. During the mating season, males square up and engage in occasional wing smacking and chest puffing to impress the ladies. Males then dance for females by bowing their head and wagging their tail up and down. Both parents will help to raise a single chick who eventually fledges after three months.
Rating- 12/10 (King of the pigeons.)

Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria), family Columbidae (doves and pigeons)
One of several species of crowned pigeon, the Victoria crowned pigeon is easily recognized by the white tips on its crest. Of the crowned pigeons, it is also the most popularly kept in captivity.

As promised, here are some photos from the national aviary in Pittsburgh! Saw lots of wonderful birds there.
I also took a boat tour up in Maine and saw lots of Atlantic puffins! I also saw some razorbills, common eiders, common loons, Wilson's storm-petrels, an Arctic tern, and a black guillemot. And plenty of gulls of course!

Chimney Swift
The chimney swift, as it’s name suggests, roosts largely in chimneys. In fact, they rarely roost in hollow trees anymore, their original natural roost. They are also one of the reasons that we study birds with by behavior. Althea Sherman began to study this bird through observation, unlike many of her fellow ornithologists who would study birds by dissecting them. She even commissioned a large, chimney like structure to be built, with stairs in the middle and peepholes so that she could fully observe these birds. She spent 15 years studying chimney swifts.
