if i had a nickel everytime i read a romantasy book about a poor girl from the streets who got picked to participate in a trial between rich kids with superpowers, while having to live at the palace where the two brothers fell in love with her before she betrayed them and ran away, i'd have two nickels.

I’m thinking about the time in Red Queen where Mare has a panic attack about her family and Cal pushes a pressure point on the back of her neck to calm her down. He said at the time he learned it for the soldiers that got panic attacks at the front but it’s much more heart breaking if Cal learned it for Maven when they were kids.

no bc the part in War Storm, right after they capture Maven and they're carrying him away and he's talking to the voice in his head saying, "I did as you said, I did as you said" breaks my heart into a million pieces every single time omg.

RQ Maven
I wish in the RQ books they explored Maven's love for theatre, like it's so ironic how he says he loves plays and shows but then you find out his whole life is pretty much an act. I think it would be so interesting to know why he liked it too, did he like the actors ability to pretend? The chance to escape the real world? I was so surprised that VA like never mentioned it again, maybe because by the time we got to his pov so much was happening? but then Cal never mentioned it either so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*spoilers about red queen/ending&theories*
I'm curious about something.. did Ptolemus ever try to apologize for what he did to Shade.. I know he kinda feel guilty but as they live somehow together (as Mare and Evangeline get close) did he ever try to talk with Barrow's or Farley? And also there is a whole new generation coming in, Shade and Farley's child and Mare&Cal's.. so are they try to become a big family or still hate and ignore each other?

i'm almost done rereading Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard, and I've just realized something about Cal that I didn't notice before.
Growing up, Cal was never my favorite. I favored Maven so much, maybe even a little too much. So, Cal was very annoying to me? I hated his every line and I was very irritated with every word he said and every action he took. But I was 13 at that time.
I am 17 years old now. And I've found a sense of maturity I didn't realize I had once discovering this.
Cal Calore is a burning flame. He is passionate and driven, with a kind heart, but he is indecisive, and this flaw drags him down.
I noticed just how often his trauma is overlooked. Cal lost everything. His mother, at a young age. His father. His brother. His friends. His kingdom. His home. His titles. The list goes on. He was taken from everything he knew and slammed down into an entire new world.
He wasn't even welcomed by the Reds. The first thing they did to Cal was lock him up alone when they reached Tuck.
And then when they met Nix, Nix was immediately taunting Cal for being "seduced by Mare into killing his father", but once Cal reveals the truth of what happened, they all fell silent.
No one. Not a single person, except probably Mare, has asked Cal if he was okay.
Cal lost everything. I mean literally everything. And not once in the whole book did we see him cry, break down, or fall apart.
That is a kind of strength I could never imagine.

Imagine Cal is at the Scarlet Base trying to get the newbloods to exercise and train and none of them are motivated... Mare yells out: "Do three laps around the court and Cal will dance around to Barbie Girl in makeup and a tutu." And they all immediately get up and start the laps, laughing their heads off.
And Cal is mad because now he actually has to do it because he doesn't want to disappoint the kids that were laughing too💀

the true villains of Red Queen
you want to know who the true villains of the Red Queen series are? Julian Jacos, Elara Merandus, and Anabel Lerolan.
Especially Julian and Anabel.
Because at least people acknowledge Elara's involvement in Maven's mental abuse.
But Julian and Anabel. They had a hand in that abuse being actively ignored and no one ever called them out on it.
Ever.
Cal should've ripped them a new one.
It's because of them he lost his little brother.
They knew what whisper influence looked like. They saw it in his mother and they would've recognized it in Maven. They should've done something. They should've done the bare minimum of telling Cal's father what was happening to his other son.
But Julian was holding a child accountable for his mother's crimes and Anabel had blatant favoritism.
