Hi Mr. Newall!!

I can't get this question out of my brain, and I would honestly really love to hear your opinion.

So, I'm autistic, and my special interest lies within storytelling--I love telling stories, consuming stories, and anything that has to do with a well-told story. Within my special interest, I have various hyperfixations; right now, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Magnus Archives, and Arcane are my big three.

I love collecting people's takes and opinions on these pieces of media, so my question is:

Have you watched Arcane on Netflix?

1a. If you have, who is your favorite character, and--if you'd humor me--why (as quantified by how they are written, their quality of voice-acting, their character arc, character design, something else entirely, etc., etc.)?

If you do have time to respond, I would be honored to hear a reply from someone as well-versed in the mechanisms of telling stories as yourself. If you never see this, I will be no worse for the wear, and I can't wait for the s1 finale of TMAGP!

I have watched Arcane on Netflix and found it thoroughly excellent. 1a. Tough to say as the core cast are fabulous but probably Ekko. Reason: I spent some time studying the philosophy of "Obligation war and dissent" and found this character to be an excellent example of normally immoral behaviour becoming moral when contextualised in an immoral system. It's not often you see the young tag-along helper archetype become as developed and rounded as they end up, becoming a role model in their own right that actively challenges your protagonists in such a way. I am also a sucker for flying skateboards and artificer type aesthetics. I did have a soft spot for Victor's gothic vibes though and thought the costume/ prop design across the board was phenomenal.

The Creature (Frankenstein) "When the Creature created by Victor Frankenstein felt that happiness was out of his reach, he made it his life’s purpose to torment his creator. In the Creature’s own words: “Have a care: I will work at your destruction, nor finish until I desolate your heart, so that you curse the hour of your birth."

He carries out this threat by killing Victor’s loved ones one by one, driving him to repeated suicide attempts and mental breakdowns until he’s institutionalized for insanity. Even after he’s released the killings continue, until Victor forsakes civilization to spend the rest of his life trying to stop the creature. Most vital to the concept of Desolation is that the Creature won’t let Victor die: he even will leave food out in secret when he’s starving, because he doesn’t want the emotional and physical torture to stop.

The Creature’s first turn towards destruction is to burn down the house of the family that turned on him, but he is a great example of the all-too-rare desolation of ice: in wanting to further escalate his creator’s suffering, he leads their chase to the Arctic to intensify the physical pain on top of the rest. This last choice went just too far, and Victor dies of illness and fatigue in the cold. The Creature’s final words are realizing that—just as many avatars do—he had fed on his own misery as much as any others."

Mr. Eaten (Fallen London) SPOILERS FOR FALLEN LONDON, SPECIFICALLY CONCERNING MR. EATEN'S NAME. "Despite Mr Eaten’s superficial ties to certain other entities in the more basic manifestations of his influence, his true allegiance lies with the Desolation. Long ago, the creature once known as [REDACTED] was betrayed by one whom he called a friend, and now his hatred burns eternal somewhere on the edge of dreams. His voice can be heard in the flickering of a candle-flame: listen, and it will tell you what to do. Do as it asks, and you will regret it.

Those consumed by his hatred will seek seven candles of their own, gained through sacrifice and suffering- both their own, and that of others. A dedicated Seeker of Mr Eaten’s Name will, over the course of their journey, completely and utterly unmake themself- they will betray their friends, dragging them down into the very same self-destructive quest. They will give up their home. They will throw their most precious possession- which may be anything from their greatest work of art, page by tortuous page, to their own child- down a well. They will burn most of their possessions for a chance at slow, arduous, luck-based progress. They will destroy their reputation, their identity, and their very destiny, piece by piece. All this culminates in the Seeker themself becoming St Gawain’s Candle, a wax-golem bearing the semblance of living flesh- and the last of the seven candles which form the burning message the Seeker must now deliver.

The fiery end of the world as we know it. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen

The Quote: It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains. Never was this truth more plain than during the recent attack at Netherfield Park, in which a household of eighteen was slaughtered and consumed by a horde of the living dead. — Elizabeth Bennet (these are the first lines obvs)

I wanted to read this after reading The Last Chance Library in which it plays a role in protagonist Jane and Alan's relationship. To start with I want to add some disclaimers, three things that my impact my reading and review of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. I have read Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice but not for about 15 years. Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice is one of my favourite go-to zone out films. Before reading this I'd never seen Burr Steers's Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. Before starting the review proper I want to add something from the afterword by Dr Allen Grove

"For some fans of Jane Austen, the mere existence of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies is a travesty. Why would anyone add gratuitous scenes of violence, carnage, and cannibalism to one of the greatest novels of Western civilization? Somewhere in the nave of Winchester Cathedral, we imagine that Austen's corpse, though presumably dead, must be rolling. Or perhaps not. It's hard to speculate what Austen might think of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies because zombies themselves didn't become popular in literature until the twentieth century. Even Victor Frankenstein' monster, a proto-zombie with no taste for brains, didn't make his appearance until the year after Austen's death in 1817."

For some reason, this feels important to me. Zombies aren't necessarily beyond Austen's thinking but zombies, as we know them, are after her time.

Elizabeth Bennet ends up feeling a little bit like an author avatar, I'm not sure entirely why. She is one of the best of her kind, especially among women, her fighting style matches Jane Austen's Elizabeth so very well. I think combining being her father's favourite, kickass fighting, her whole attitude and the respect she receives in her skill just feels like something Austen would want to be in escapism. But as Grove said so much of this was before her time. That said Mr Darcy just feels the same. He's a competent and deadly fighter, protective of those closest to him. But still not great with the communication or general people skills, as is only right. On the other characters, Jane is brilliantly competent. Just the idea of the five sisters having a specific move they have to clear a room was a great choice to me. Her fighting skill gives her and Bingley's relationship a whole other dimension. She has something over him, he has money, she can defend them if need be. There is an interesting take on Lydia. I like her ending. Wickam gets the ending that suits his character. Without going into spoilers Kitty and Mary have lovely endings. Kitty shows her growth, Mary gets to come out of her shell and her behaviour becomes that of Hearfortshire's last protector. Charlotte and Mr. Collins, well that whole story just feels like it goes so much darker than the original.

Some dot points...

"I have great pleasure in thinking you will be so happily settled. I have not a doubt of your doing very well together. Your tempers are by no means unlike. You are each of you so complying, that nothing will ever be resolved on; so easy, that every servant will cheat you; and so generous, that you will always exceed your income." (Mr. Bennet) — I'm so happy one of my favourite lines in literature remains untouched. I adore this line so much.

"I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It was too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun." (Mr. Darcy) — How do I always forget that is fandom favourite line is Pride & Prejudice?

"What a power it was! But how to wield it? Of all the weapons she had commanded, Elizabeth knew the least of love; and of all the weapons in the world, love was the most dangerous."(Elizabeth Bennet) — This is just a stunning a truthful quote. I'm unsure if it's Austen or Grahame-Smith but I really appreciate it so it needs to be here

The edition I'm reading has illustrations by Roberto Parada. These illustrations are wonderful. They add something to the book. They are period-appropriate almost plate style. The choices of scenes to illustrate was good. Some are key, some just illustrate well.

There are ingenious adaptations to architecture, internal design and landscaping. Especially Pemberly, it is absolutely stunning. Mirroring the Kyoto architecture and internals that Darcy loves so much. Even Longhorn has its own well-used dojo for the Bennet girls. Rosings Park is interesting in its own right but I will avoid the spoilers.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh is possibly one of the best characters in the way she is altered. She is somehow made even more unlikeable. She is made even more ruthless.

The first question someone may have coming into this is... how? Quite simply nearly all the traditional female occupations (the pianoforte, sewing) are replaced by the deadly arts (staged fights, crafting or sharpening weapons). When the ladies go walking there is always the chance of walking into zombies, though they are less common in winter when the ground freezes. It really is just Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice with Zombies added. I do mean added. They influence peoples daily lives therefore the motives for their pivotal actions and key events in the novel. This lore is integrated near seamlessly.

I like the way this all comes together. There are so many lovely passages blending Austen's original text and Grahame-Smith's additions. Some are fun, some not so much. For example, Darcy's reason for separating Bingly and Jane was one I should have seen coming but didn't. (It's another great choice). Changes like this create an entirely different feeling novel. It really is well worth a read, even if you have already seen Burr Steers's film.

After the day after finishing this, I did watch the film. It is a decent film. It is worth noting that it is only "based on" this book. Whereas this has lore woven throughout, the film feels more like a standard zombie au. Kinda like credit was given to Seth Grahame-Smith because it was a lawsuit waiting to happen otherwise. Both have their pros and cons. Overall Burr Steers's film is definitely more palatable to modern audiences, while Grahame-Smith's book holds truer to Austen's ideals. That said there is a brilliant line in the film that totally empowers Elizabeth "It gave me hope." "For what?" "That your feelings towards me may have changed? However one word from you now will silence me on the subject forever. You are the love of my life Elizabeth Bennet. So I ask you now...half in anguish...half in hope... Will you do me the great, great honor, of taking me for your husband?" What I really appreciate is the last line your husband not my wife. He's not claiming her.

Sorry I just wanted to talk about it with someone since irl I can't really talk about it to anyone..

heya! i know it really sucks. i kinda felt that way back when i couldn’t get the victor SSR from the seasons wish tree event after so many pulls. but at least his card wasn’t time-limited then. i was able to get it in the end after earning a bunch of blossoms. for this one tho, the cards will be gone after awhile. i’m sorry your luck wasn’t good this time. they’ll hopefully repeat this event! if it makes you feel better, the dates were badly translated. i feel like they were rushed so it could be launched in the en version at the same time as the others. ✿

He teaches MC healing first, and she’s a natural. He’s impressed.

She doesn’t want to learn to fight with water and thinks healing will be enough, but he thinks she has a natural affinity and encourages her to gain as much knowledge as she can.

She’s inspired by his words and gives it a try. She’s a lot better than she thinks.

Victor tells her to leave, but she refuses. He blasts a bolt of lightning right next to her face. She doesn’t flinch.

He decides she’s incredibly resolute or incredibly stupid. It doesn’t seem like the worst way to kill time.

He’s an unforgiving teacher, harsh and precise, but it makes her all the better and she progresses quickly.

I’m a member on Gaia Online and I’ve been thinking about making a guild for MLQC. Is anyone on Gaia interested? It would be a place to share game info, headcanons, stories, and artwork (just like here). BUT, it would also be a place to role play through their forum services and create avatars using their assets. Below are some examples of what I created using their dream avatar builder. (I’m not happy with how. I for turned out, but I could find a better hair/head option.)

It took me a while, but I’m finally here with my celebration for reaching the incredible milestone that is 9k followers, I’m celebrating with a special event: drabble prompts for underrated characters! 🎉✨ 

They are basically drabbles and prompts put together, since they’re formatted like a drabble but requested with a prompt provided, in this case them being tropes we all love. There is an additional twist, it being that this celebration will be focusing on underrated characters, being it a combination of characters that deserve more love as well as some characters that haven’t been requested much and that I’m inspired for.

While this celebration is happening, THE OTHER REQUESTS WILL BE CLOSED so I can focus on writing these without getting overwhelmed.

British novelist (born 1939)

In the 1960s Moorcock edited the science fiction magazine New Worlds, pioneering and encouraging New Wave writing, which attempted to give science fiction a new social and political relevance to the time. Moorcock’s own New Wave work is at its peak in his Jerry Cornelius books (including The English Assassin and The Final Programme), which are less straightforward novels than firework displays of ideas,magical mystery tours round one man’s overheated brain. In later books Moorcock returned to a more sober style, still crammed with ideas but much easier to read. Many of his novels offer alternative versions of the present (Warlord of the Air, for example, imagines a twentieth century where the First World War never happened and the old nineteenth-century empires, British, Austrian, Russian and German, are still jockeying for power). Others (Gloriana, The Jewel in the Skull) are satires about societies which are dark and decadent perversions of our own. All of Moorcock’s work, however, is interlinked at some level, a reflection of ‘the multiverse’ he has imagined, the interconnected, parallel universes through which his characters travel. Jerry Cornelius, Elric of Melnibone (doomed albino prince of a dying race in some of Moorcock’s best sword-and-sorcery titles), Corum, Hawkmoon, Von Bek and others are all avatars of the Eternal Champion, Moorcock’s Hero With a Thousand Faces.

DANCERS AT THE END OF TIME  (1981) A good starting-point to Moorcock’s multifarious, dazzling work is the series Dancers at the End of Time (An Alien Heat, The Hollow Lands, The End of All Songs and a cluster of less closely related novels). The time is the very last days of the universe. The few hundred surviving members of the human race control vast energies: anything desired can be obtained by twisting a 'power ring'. Jerek Cornelian (the last human being ever to be born, an avatar of Jerry Cornelius from the earlier novels) falls in love with a strait-laced Victorian time-traveller, Mrs Amelia Underwood. He follows her back in time, and is promptly stranded in the slums of Victorian London: a typical Moorcock idea, allowing him to collapse history, fantasy, social commitment and literary parody - Cornelian gives D H.G. Wells the idea for The Time Machine unpredictable experience.

Many of Moorcock’s novels are grouped in series: The Chronicles of the Black Sword, The High History of the Runestaff, The Chronicles of Castle Brass, The Books of Corum, The History of the Eternal Champion. Byzantium Endures, The Laughter of Carthage and Jerusalem Commands are three epic novels which follow the scheming Colonel Pyat through the story, real and imagined, of the twentieth century. Mother London and King of the City are non-science fiction novels, dazzling recreations of London lives past and present.
