There’s a common critique of The Kingkiller Chronicles that says the main character (Kvothe) is over powered and this makes the conflicts uninteresting to read because Kvothe will always do something exceptionally clever and resolve whatever problem he comes across by being a super genius with few to no character flaws.
Examples usually cited include his admission to the university at an exceptionally young age and receiving the first ever scholarship. Or his admission into the arcanum and the showing up of his overly arrogant teacher. The list goes on.
And this seems to me to be such a tremendously poor critique it’s absolutely mystifying that it’s been made so many times. And made by people who I think in other contexts show themselves to be astute and good faith readers. It fundamentally misunderstands the very obvious point of any of the scenes they like to cherrypick. In my mind it misunderstands the point of the entire book itself.
Rothfuss’ world-building involves two primary magic systems, one very hard magic system (sympathy) and one very soft magic system (naming). And if you’ll forgive a vibic associative sort of description here, these are supposed to roughly correspond to a type of analytic intelligence and a type of thoughtful wisdom respectively.
It is important to note that Kvothe is portrayed as exceptionally talented at the analytic type of hard-magic and not particularly talented at the more reflective soft-magic.
This is an important feature to keep in mind when you look at the sort of story Rothfuss’ is trying to tell. His writing has a sort of recursive quality. The story is a frame narrative, it’s a story within a story, and often there are stories within the stories within the stories. It seems rather obvious that Rothfuss has in mind the power of thoughtful deliberateness, the power of thoughtfully chosen words, and it seems rather obvious too that he’s showing us a failure case of this. Kvothe’s story isn’t wish-fulfilment Mary Sue fantasy. It’s a tragedy. It’s how you end up old and alone and regretting your life story. The protagonist is reckless, arrogant, and mentally agile in a way that gets him off the hook in situations that might seem short-term unpleasant to be in, but would otherwise serve as valuable learning experiences.
Kvothe is unable to see the value of things that his teachers say are difficult or impossible to fully explicate. He is insistent that his own mental prowess is sufficient to overcome any surmountable obstacle. He’s brought up short several times, he’s asked to describe love, or music, and he blusters on seemingly unaware of his own incompetence.
There’s an analogy to Hamlet to be made. Kvothe’s hamartia is the obverse face of the Danish Prince’s, he never stops to think, he just acts—and disaster follows.
The scene where Kvothe is admitted into the university at a young age and given the first ever scholarship is a good example of this actually. How did he manage to accomplish this? He cheated. He broke into the admissions hall and spied on other candidates taking the entrance exam and memorised the questions the examiners asked and their model answers. This is explained in the very next passage to him taking the exam, but I guess people making the critique found it egregious enough that they put the book down before reading on to that part.
Kvothe sacrifices long-term deep understanding of the world for short-term gain. He uses his analytic faculties to try to game the system. And we know, as he says at the very beginning of the story, that he will eventually suffer for it.
None of this is to say that Kkc is beyond reproach. There are very legitimate criticisms to be made about its representation and treatment of women. It’s just that people so often want to make a critique of it that misunderstands it so badly it makes me think they should read it. The force of the book is directed to people who would misunderstand it in this way… But it’s difficult to explain that to someone who is trapped in that sort of misapprehension.
#I don’t think I’m explaining myself very well#but I just saw *that* one star review again and I’m shocked all over again#how could someone think *that*? there are so many real critiques you could have made#but this one isn’t anything? it’s just misunderstanding the story?

Apparently sufjan stevens hasn’t come out prior to today, but idk why I always thought he was gay (despite never really listening to his music or knowing what he looked like). I think maybe I just had him vibically confused with Rufus Wainwright

Hmmmmm, so using Zorn's lemma you can prove the well-ordering principle quite easily. It's a straightforward application; you consider the poset of all partial well-orders of the set, ordered by inclusion. But, do you need the law of excluded middle (or more specifically the principle of double negation elimination, so that proofs by contradiction are valid) to show that a maximal element in this poset is in fact a well-order? Normally you go well assume there's two incomparable elements, then we can expand the well-order, so our original well-order was not maximal, which contradicts the assumption. However, it feels, vibically, like this appeal to LEM is not strictly necessary... Data-wise it seems like you don't need to create anything more out of thin air than the given maximal partial well-order.
Follower challenge: prove the well-ordering principle without the law of excluded middle using only a single appeal to Zorn's lemma.
#math#btw you prove zorn's lemma from the well-ordering principle by way of transfinite induction#which is a proof by contradiction#and just a very weird procedure in general#what i'm trying to justify is my intuition that zorn's lemma is constructively stronger than the well-ordering principle

Hello! I've been working on this gender system for about a week now, inspired by icey-genders' vibic suffix, and I want to share it with the lovely community here!
~·~
The Vibic Gender System
Mollisvibic - a gender that has the same vibes as soft things, concepts or scenes; such as bunnies, moss blankets, cuddling near a campfire under a winter sky, the cottagecore aesthetic.
Named from Latin word mollis, meaning soft.
Tenevibic - a gender that has the same vibes as darker things, concepts or scenes; such as abandoned houses, bogs, a field on tbe aftermath of a battle, a quiet post-apocalyptic city, the goth aesthetic.
From the Latin word tenebris, meaning darkness.
Vivusvibic - a gender that has the same vibes as things, concepts, or scenes in a populated area; such as cracked roads, crowded streets, suburbs, malls, jamming out in the car while waiting through a traffic jam.
From the Latin word vivus, meaning living.
Terravibic - a gender that has the same vibes as things, concepts or scenes relating to nature; such as sunlight hitting a rolling field of flowers, snow days, laying in the middle of the road during a downpour, forests, the adventurecore aesthetic.
From the Latin word terra, meaning earth.
Kosmosvibic - a gender that has the same vibes as otherworldly things, concepts or scenes; such as alien life, a spaceship floating through space, uninhabited planets, galaxies exploding in on themselves, other dimensions.
From the Greek word κόσμος (kósmos), meaning world or cosmos.
Deusvibic - a gender that has the same vibes as divine things, concepts or scenes; such as hymns sung through an empty cathedral, ancient temples, angelkins, forgotten practices.
From the Latin word deus, meaning deity.
Auravibic - a fluid gender that changes between all or multiple vibic genders; because much like the wind, and spiritual auras, the vibe of one's gender can be ever changing too.
From the Latin word aura, meaning air or breeze.
Undavibic (a.k.a Aquavibic) - an individual who picks and chooses how to define their vibe. They find vibes they enjoy and adopt it into the overall identity.
From the Latin word unda, meaning water or ripple.

I made a gender and flag based off @iceys-genders -vibic suffix! I like the, heh, vibe of that suffix so I coined a gender that's a vibe to me and probably a good couple of my facets as well!
Toonvibic: a gender that embodies the vibes of children's cartoons, kodomo anime, kids toys, e and e10 rated games with colorful aesthetics, playful imagery, colorful old web graphics, the emotion of "fun", and the power of love and friendship! Anyone can use this gender as long as they can relate to it! The colors on the flag represent common primary colors found in kids targeted media such as cartoons, and the yellow on the cube represents the emotion of fun, nontraditional love, and friendship!
[image description: a pride flag for the gender toonvibic. It is a colorful pride flag with red on the top, pink-purple on the second stripe, purple on the middle stripe, blue purple on the fourth stripe, and blue on the last stripe. in front of it is a yellow, dandelion, and banana pudding colored cube. the left side is yellow, the right side is banana pudding, and the top side is dandelion. end image description]
also since I don't have access to a good computer with a good graphics program at the moment, forgive me for the eye searing colors. if a reblogged can fix the flag to be more photosensitive friendly, by all means do it.

I’m gonna go back to wearing red lipstick on the reg. It really does suit me, vibically. One way to make it stay without having to use lip liner, is apparently to layer it over the laneige sleep lip mask (which I did on a lark today).

so there is this game that exists within the planetfall dream canon that is about excavating these ancient buried vaults. i think it's like a mental pastiche of duskers? when you get to the vault you can connect your brain to robots to control them to explore the vault. there are of course monsters in the vault. the game was famously hyped prior to release but ended up being pretty monotonous and too long. then after a few years they made a free update that shuffled things around in the progression system and added stuff onto the end of the story, ruining the pacing and generally understood to be making everything worse.
but within the dream canon, this game (pre-patch) is one of the most impactful experiences of dream-me. i only noticed the monotony long after the game ended.
there was a second game, which was less a-game-being-played-in-the-dream and more the experience of the dream, which was very "take that! better things aren't possible, you better thing wanter!" which involved (muddle of images too specific and none are emblematic of the patternless whole and i don't remember all the details but i remember the vibe but the exact vibe is kind of incommunicable and the triumphant pessimism above is only an approximation).
the pessimist game, apparently, according to this dream, was the sequel to the monotonous game. within the dream i was pretty convinced they were fallout games despite not liking fallout at all and being like "what was that fallout game with the underground vaults wait that's all of them." i think this is probably just a mistake. i don't know about the canonicity of the pessimist game being a game rather than game-shaped previous content.
within the dream i had a friend in school but this says little about the timelines (the dreams where the vault game exists are from the same continuity as the dreams where i get sent back to high school as an adult.) i remember particle fleet featured in this dream somehow but the details are already fading. anyway this friend was distressed by the update and started writing a fanfic secretively and then when the pessimist game came out they were also distressed by that and decided to make it into a mod for the vault game.
i sort of grew apart from this friend for undefined reasons and years later there was a christmas song that reminded me of them in some weird vibic sense. i also hated myself for not knowing this classic song and also disliking some of the forced rhymes in it that if i was a good person i would just uncritically love. some more time passed and i learned that this song was only a year old and primarily meant as a promotion for disney world and it had become a christmas song as kind of a psyop which made me feel betrayed and i went looking for the fanfic for answers (?) i found the mod (i did not at this point know they had decided to turn it into a mod) and played through the game with it and i don't remember what was different because this part of the dream was really skipped over. the game was just mostly <emotional intensity here> and then the credits were changed to be this bittersweet goodbye thing where it wasn't clear whether the goodbye was "i'm going to kill myself (it's not your fault, you made it more bearable but you cannot be expected to neutralize the world)" or "i'm going to skip town and become a girl (and you probably should too, your gender situation is not going to get any better)" like whichever it was it was specifically addressed at me, by this former friend, it wasn't full of in-jokes but it was full of in-themes if that makes any sense and i was weeping through the credits in the dream and some of that was a selfish "what if i had been a better friend and played this earlier? could i have saved them/decided to become a girl sooner?" as i woke up and was disgusted with myself that i had not been weeping outside the dream
integer overflowed on caffeine, fell asleep, had one of the most emotionally intense dreams ever in like an hour's nap

Homotopy vs homology pick your fav?
Oh easily homology. Singular homology is sick as hell. I can't remember where I read this but I was reading an old book on something and the author described homology and homotopy very vibically as considering shapes (i.e. cycles) up to 'equivalence by connecting them with simplices' and 'equivalence by connecting them with more restricted tubes' or something like that. I didn't fully get the description but it made it sound very logical why homotopy groups are much less well-behaved than singular homology groups; it's just a more complicated equivalence relation trying to capture the same idea!
I don't know anything about cohomology, or more general homological algebra. Hoping to learn more in the coming year! :)

Okay I've been seeing a lot of the terms EA and HBD since the ftx thing blew up and I'm gonna be honest I have no idea what that means. Can you explain? I tried googling and I got "it means happy birthday" and Electronic Arts. For EA I was really honestly believing EA had something to do with the crypto exchange on the grounds that they're a horrid shit company and I fully expected them to get involved here considering ftx had sponsorship deals with esports orgs and was thus already in the gaming space but everyday the context moves further away from sounding like its anything I already knew existed so as of today I'm confused.
Oh no, right, this is probably incredibly confusing without context.
As far as this whole mess goes EA means Effective Altruism. Which, well, ostensibly its a movement to, uh, being altruistic effectively (that is, achieving the greatest good to the greatest number via your charitable donations of time/labor).
All you really need to know to understand most of the discourse around the movement is that it's strongly associated with techie west-coast types and there's a whole Vox vertical dedicated to it. Calibrate your social/cultural/vibic position on it accordingly.
I'm really not an expert but AFAIK it's all intellectual downstream of Peter Singer (his 'starving children in the third world deserve your intervention to help them just as much as a child drowning in a pond you walk by on the way to work' essays, not the 'infanticide is okay if the kid's disabled enough' stuff, and, while I'm in no way an expert, the practical upshots of the movement seem to be
-A by all accounts very good site dedicated to ranking charities based on how effective they are at actually saving/improving lives (Givewell)
-A cultural campaign to convince upper-middle class professional/programmer types to donate more money to charity. Which, combined with the above, has led to a ton of money going to anti-malarial medication and bednets and deworming programs in Central Africa and etc
-And also a bunch of money going into the Weird Stuff - okay being really worried about pandemic prevention isn't weird anymore but animal wellfare and AI safety research still very much are, and they're the bits people tend to really meme about. LOTS of money and jobs for people worried about animal suffering and/or robots killing us
-And just like generally a whole non-profit-industiral-complex for Silicon Valley. Conferences, scholarships, fellowships, speaking tours, book deals, charity galas, you know the drill.
#reply#anon#dealing with my guilt over how many asks I've let pile up by writing way too long an answer for this one
