THIS oh my god. It was such a stark and sudden contrast that it really made Varric's absence feel that much bigger. There are many valid criticisms of Veilguard, but I think the way they emphasised Varric's absence by using Elgar'nan specifically straight after the reveal was a very good choice. It wouldn't have had as much impact if they chose Solas or Morrigan or even the Inquisitor. It reminds you of how much is at stake and gives you that "oh shit we're kinda fucked" moment as a player (at least that'd what it did for me)
Say what you will about the Varric twist in Veilguard. But the way the narration changes to Elgarā€™nan after the reveal made my stomach turn. Having Varric hold your hand throughout the story only for him to be ripped away from you like that made me immediately feel his absence like a stab in the chest.

As I work on a project Iā€™m excited to share with you Iā€™m rewatching Duelist kingdom.
Iā€™m at the Yugi vs Kaiba duel on the roof and as I watch I canā€™t help thinking of my au where Yugi and Seto raise Jaden.
Do you think, after Jaden tells all of his friends about his identity, that they hang out at the Manor. Where Seto keeps all his old prototypes.
Specifically the original duel disk frisbees.
Because those things have to be so fun to play with. Your hand becomes jumbo size. You are throwing the disk around. Heck it might be the first action duel if the players want to chase each other around.
Just a Novel way to duel.
I can see Seto breaking them out when Jaden is young. Maybe once Jadenā€™s actually old enough to read the cards by himself and is starting to get really into dueling. Heā€™s asking about all the old tournaments Yugi, Seto, Joey, and Atem were in. And Seto is talking about the early ones, before Yugi and Joey were in the scene. Back before the duel arenas and duel disks. Maybe Jaden asks about how he came up with duel disks or what it was like to use the arenas. (Note they have an arena at home.)
Joey and Yugi are telling him about duelist kingdom when Seto just gets up and is like ā€œgive me a minuteā€
He comes back with his old prototypes and ask Jaden to duel.
They have a blast throwing the disks around and Seto starts wondering if he should sell these to or if he should keep them for family only. (He goes with the second option. Duel disks sells are just fine and watching Jaden and Yugi running around and laughing with the disks is more than enough. (Joey and Atem are playing to but heā€™s not as soft for them as he is for his husband and son.))
Anyway flash forward 10ish years and Jaden has friends over. At the very least Jesse, Chazz, and Aster.
They are all hanging out when Jaden looks at them ā€œwant to see something cool?ā€ They all look at him and look around the Kaiba Manson like ā€˜cooler than this?ā€™
But Jaden brings out the prototype duel disk.
They are all stoked because like this is a peice of dueling history. They are looking at the original duel disks. Waitā€¦ weā€™re allowed to touch them? Weā€™re allowed to duel with them????
They are arguing over who gets to go first. (Chazz and aster are arguing. Jadenā€™s used them a bunch of time but he still thinks they are really fun and while Chazz and Aster argue who gets to go first Jaden hands on to Jesse and explains how they work while setting them up. Chazz and Aster donā€™t realize until the Jaden and Jesse are tossing the disks at each other and summoning their first monsters.
Chazz and Aster definitely pout over it. All is forgiven when they get their turn.

Been a fan of your fics for YEARS. I was just telling my friend how despite how much I read fics I never actually love them, with some of your fics (especially TMA) as the exception. Felt the need to reread some of them and saw you reblogged some ISAT fanart. So. Any thoughts on ISAT you'd like to share?
Hope you have a wonderful day!! So happy I found your fics again!!
I avoided answering this for a while because I was trying to think of a way to cohesively and coherently vocalize my thoughts on In Stars and Time. I have given up because I don't want to hold everybody here all day and I have accepted that my thoughts are just pterodactyl screeching.
I love it so much. I have so much to say on it. It drove me bonkers for like a week straight. I have AUs. It's absolute Megbait. They're just a little Snufkin and they're having the worst experience of anybody's life. Ludonarratives my fucking beloved.
I am going to talk about the prologue.
The prologue is such a fascinating experience. You crack open the game and immediately begin checking off all of the little genre boxes: mage, warrior, researcher, you're the rogue...some little kid who's there for some reason...alright, you know the score. You're in yet another indie Earthbound RPG, these are your generic characters, let's get the ball rolling.
Except then you realize that these characters are people. You feel instantly how you've entered the game at its last dungeon, at the end of the adventure. They have their own in-jokes, histories, backgrounds, adventures. They get along well and they're obviously close, but not in a twee or unrealistic way. They have so much chemistry and spirit and life. I fell in love with them so quickly.
But Sif doesn't. Sif kind of hates them, because they will not stop saying the same damn thing. They walk the same paths, do the same things, make the same jokes, expect Sif to say the same lines. They keep referencing a Sif we do not see, with jokes we never see him make and heroic personality he never shows - they reference a Sif who is dead - and Sif can't handle that, so he kills them too.
They become only an exercise in tedious frustration. Sif button mashes through their dialogue, Sif mindlessly clicks the same dialogue options, Sif skips through the tutorial, Sif blows through the puzzles. Sif turns their world into a video game. Sif is playing a generic RPG. Sif forgets their names. They are no longer people with in-jokes, histories, backgrounds, adventures. They're the mage, the warrior, the researcher, and...some random kid.
I did not understand the Kid's presence at first. I had no idea what they contributed to the game. They didn't do anything. As a party member in a video game, they're a bit useless. Why is the Kid there?
Because Sif's life isn't a video game. Because the kid isn't 'the kid'. They're Bonnie. Bonnie, who the party loves. Why is Bonnie there? Because they love them. There is no room for Bonnie in the boring RPG that Sif is playing. And then you realize that Sif is wrong, and that they've lost something extremely important, and that they'll never escape without it.
Watching the prologue before watching ISAT gave ISAT the most unique air of dread and horror, because you crack open ISAT and you see the person Sif used to be. You realize that Sif used to be a person. Sif used to be the person who made jokes, who gave real smiles, who interacted with the world as if they are a part of it. And you know you are sitting down to watch Sif lose everything that made them a person, to lose everything that made them a member of this world, and turn them into a character in a video game who doesn't understand the point of Bonnie at all.
At the climax of the game, when the others realize that something is deeply wrong and that Sif physically cannot tell them, they realize that there is nothing they can do. So Bonnie declares snacktime. And for the first time they have snacktime.
What is snacktime? Classic JRPGs don't have snacktime. There's literally no point to a snacktime - not in a video game, and not in Sif's terrible life. It's not fixing this, because nothing can fix this. But Bonnie gives Sif a cookie and Sif eats it.
It's meaningless. It's a cutscene. It didn't save Sif and it didn't change a thing. It will make no difference in the end.
But it did make the difference. It made all of the difference in the world. Bonnie is a character who you really don't understand the point of before you realize that Bonnie was the entire point.
ISAT is about comfort media. Why do we play the same video games over and over again? Why do we avoid watching the finale of our favorite shows? What is truly comforting: a story with no conflict, or a story where you always know what is about to happen? Do you want to live in a scary, uncontrollable world, or do you want to play Stardew Valley? Do you want a person or a character?
When I beat Earthbound for the first time (and if you don't know, the prologue/ISAT battle system is just Mother) and watched the ending cutscene where the characters part ways and say goodbye...I felt a little bit sad. I wanted them to be together forever. But that's something only characters could ever be.
#these aren't deep or unique thoughts they're just the specific aspect of ISAT that made it one of the most interesting gaming experiences#i actually like the prologue much more than ISAT for just this reason#its honestly a video game art piece that's created to give the player a very specific experience#that makes them an aspect of the narrative that is told#it's. incredible.#in stars and time#start again start again start again#start again: a prologue#isat#god and there is so so so so much more to say here#what a rich and complex and fascinating game that made me cry like a baby#i dont even kin sif. we arent similar at all.#i cant imagine how devastating this game would have been if i did#but I do have a deep relationship with escapsim#and i write about it a lot#and video games about being video games are wonderful#as are stories about being stories#and why we consume stories. how we use them. how they save us and hurt us.#never played a video game that used its medium so well#i bet undertales also pretty good at that but this is more so i think#stories about stories have to be about why we love stories#and im not an artsy person and i roll my eyes a bit when people talk about the spiritual neccesity of art#i think people need stories because the world is sad and hard and boring and we want to think about something else for a while.#some people need to be anywhere but here#and sometimes if you're Lil Depressed-Ass Snufkin that looks like being here forever#baby cringe-ass snufkin big hat idiot

hihi i love everything about this post BUT i heard you mention the original william wilson being a cardsharper and came running to yap forgive me LMAO
i have like a huge card hyperfixation and when i read william wilson the main thing that rlly stuck with me is the card scene and since then i've been trying to think how that might relate to nevermore. after all, strategy games are a huge motif in this comic.
a theory i've seen going around is that will is supposed to be wilson, the dopplegƤnger, and montresor takes the place of the narrator. there's a lot to talk about there, but something i wanted to mention was that while will is never shown to play cards, monty is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and, forgive me for perhaps reading a bit too much into this, but based on his 'ace in the hole' comment, it'd seem he's specifically referencing stud poker but like idk maybe he's just using whatever poker-related phrase to get his point across, it doesn't rlly matter i'm just yapping
in william wilson, wilson exposes william as a cheater at an underground casino (? idk some underground betting place). if the theory that will is wilson and monty is william then, well, i can only wonder how monty's been cheating. just a thought idk
back to the ace in the hole thing, i'm taking this to mean monty sees people as cards, things to use when need. if ada's his ace, what does that make will?
i think will is monty's wild card. wild cards are basically any card that by that game's rules can act as any other card (e.g: to make a straight/flush or five of a kind) yk. like will. who's always turning into who he needs to be to assist monty.
another way to look at it is that will is already playing cards without making it obvious.
basically every card game has the concept of keeping your cards to yourself, or at least not giving them all away. like in this scene that keeps me up at night!
Tumblr media
whether from monty's instruction or by his own accord, will very deliberately chooses to reveal an ability that even he would think is useless. after all, who needs more of him? we know he has serious self-esteem issues, there's no way he thinks his duplication ability is useful. he can afford to reveal this ability, or card, because no one cares and if anything it'll make people deem him less of a threat. no need to pay attention to him!
he also has crazy good memory, too. he perfectly mimicks duke's appearance, save for the colour of his bowtie that no one would have noticed were it not for eulalie already being suspicious due to her rods (i don't doubt eula would have noticed anything amiss even without her rods, but it definitely helped that she had them), and the same for lenore. mind you, he's barely seen either of these people and of the two times he's met duke one of them was out of his uniform.
this trait of his probably wasn't written with cards in mind and rather for plot convenience (which is fine, of course) but if i REALLY wanted to fit this in to my card game nonsense, it's worth noting that memory is very important in a lot of card games. you gotta keep track of which cards have been played or given out, the number of cards in each player's hands, etc etc. all those little details. much like how will is very accurate in keeping track of the details people's appearances.
and one last thing. yk how the main colours in playing cards are black and red? i'm just saying!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyways yes you get it!! the fact will uses ribbons as his weapon?? he entangles other people?? i'm thinking maybe it reflects how in life he always wanted people to be dragged into his shit and not the other way around, or how whatever stuff he got pulled into eventually hurt the people around him but like honestly no clue
Fellow William analyst, greetings! I hope you are well, I hope you don't mind a question/ask.
I am curious about your thoughts on the lack of reaction we see of Will at the "one life" reveal at the dinner scene, if you haven't already shared your thoughts before! We know Annabel wasn't shocked, but what about Will?
It took me longer to answer than I thought, sorry
I'm not sure I can say anything new, but yes, it's pretty damn suspicious. The composition of the frame stylized as broken glass, makes it easy to draw Will with everyone, and a frame later we see him with other panicking students, so RnF didn't show his reaction quite intentionally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I also want to talk about his behavior further. In the next episode, Will doesn't behave the way you expect him to. Given his weak-willed personality, it seems like he should be scared and overwhelmed by the prospect of a survival game (like Morella for example) but he's confused at best, and moreover, confused by everyone else's reactions. He even tries to justify the deans, basically gaslighting the rest of the students.
Tumblr media
Will is not afraid, but he does not understand why others are. I have only two possible explanations: either he knew, or he just doesn't care, just like Annabel. Or maybe both.
Maybe he has played these games before. Maybe he doesn't plan to fight for a second life (at least not in Nevermore, again just like Annabel). Maybe because he is somehow connected with the academic staff with all his doll aesthetic, there is no second life for him in general, he just works there. There are many options, but here I would prefer to focus on his parallels with Annabel - two characters whose reactions we don't see in this frame.
This is actually not the only scene where they are absent, contrary to common sense. In episode 6 we see the merit board for the first time. Most of the names on it are blurred, but some can be distinguished. Among them are Lenore, Annabel, Duke, Morella, Ada, Prospero and Will. All of them, except Annabel and Will, are present in the room at this moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wouldn't have paid much attention to this scene if it weren't for Prospero. Why is he there? He doesn't speak a single line, and we haven't been introduced to him as a character yet. His presence here is useless. So maybe the idea really was for all the characters whose names were visible on the board to be in the scene(or at least have already been introduced, like Annabel).
Tumblr media
So what about Will? My main problem with shapeshifter characters is that they can be anyone, anywhere, at any point in the story. Especially if they can also create their own copies. He could have already been introduced and we just didn't notice.
Now let's talk about the games these kids love to play so much. We know that Annabel is a talented chess player, and Montresor constantly uses card game slang. But did you know that it was William Wilson from Poe's original story who was a cardsharper? I just think it's such an interesting detail. Nevermore`s Will has never been seen like this, but considering how much of a board game aesthetic this webtoon has, I think it's important to note this.
And finally, there is a similarity that also makes them very different: both Annabel and Will have ribbons as an essential symbol, but it has a completely opposite meaning for each of them. For Annabel, the ribbons are a symbol of madness, fear, and perhaps her golden cage. It appears in her hallucinations after Lenore's fake death, as well as when Ada shows her her main fear.
Will, on the other hand? The ribbons are his weapon. He uses them to tangle other people. Curious, although his spectre is obviously a marionette, he doesn't have a control bar for strings, he controls the strings himself (not always successful but still).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No matter how weak-willed Will is, he's the only one in Annabel's group who isn't influenced by her. She blackmails Montresor, Prospero respects her as a leader and friend, Ada admires and envies her. But she doesn't have anything on Will. In the chess allegory, he will obviously be a pawn (and I`ll write a whole post about it, I swear), but not Annabel's pawn. I have an idea that sooner or later, Montresor will think of using Will to find dirt on Annabel in revenge. After all, given their spectre abilities, it's easier for them to find out lenabel's secret.
So, let's summarize what we found. Absolutely nothing. This post turned out to be longer than I had planned, because I was a little carried away, but I hope you found something interesting for yourself in this stream of thoughts.
Here, take funny little Will everyone. He deserves to be noticed.

slowly I'm recovering the beauty of discovery
(creature by halfā€¢alive)
(textless + timelapse below cut)
Tumblr media
#yellowart#subnautica#i feel like the timelapse is kinda long but also this did take a long time to make#anyways. let me yap about the meanings of all the panels <3#'i am creation' -> the ocean being the source of life and where shit evolved from also a good way to sort of 'set the scene' for subnautica#'both haunted' -> GHOST leviathan; in the BONE fields#'and holy' -> this one was a bit trickier. debated about using the emperor but i knew i wanted to use her elsewhere#also debated hoverfish because its cute and well liked so i thought that would be funny for 'and holy'#also something something jesus walking on water also makes it fitting. in the end though i decided on a peeper with the enzyme trail#and i *tried* to make it loop over its head like a halo but idk how well that imagery came through. still mentioned it in the alt text tho.#'made in glory' -> was REALLY torn about this one. on the one hand i wanted to have like a picture of the code because something something#divine machine and it being made out of code making it inherently holy or something; but i wasnt sure if that would be too#'immersion breaking' since most of the stuff in this is like in game stuff i wasnt sure if acknowledging that it was a game would be#too much. my other idea was to draw a couple of creature eggs like a stalker egg and a spadefish egg or something; but in the end i just#went with the one that i personally thought was cooler so if you think it does feel out of place uhhhh sorry i guess lmao.#also yes that is code from the game. idk shit about programming i just think code shit is cool so i poked though a modding tutorial til i#found what it is they use to look at that shit and started poking around. its pretty cool tbh. anyways the specific part i chose for the#drawing was something under the peepers; i think its the bit that tells the enzyme peepers to do the enzyme stuff like the trail obviously#but also some other stuff. not 100% sure though like i said idk shit about this sort of thing but everything in there seems pretty well#labeled its kinda impressive. and very helpful for navigating even if you dont know shit lol.#anyways. 'even the depths of the night cannot blind me' -> blood kelp trench is i think one of the darkest biomes in the game#possibly THE darkest so i thought it would be fitting. probably my least favorite panel though i dont think i did a very good job#representing the area or representing the bloodvines :/#'when you guide me' -> sea emperor but more specifically her messages to the player telling you to 'come here'#'creature only' -> not sure how well i can articulate this but basically the idea of humans beig animals with animal needs to eat and drink#and the idea of being a part of the ecosystem. modern life tends to make us forget that sort of thing but id imagine for ryley being on the#planet would violently remind him of this with things trying to eat him while he has to try to eat things as well. being part of the food#web. 'creature only' because he is only a creature not non-essential systems maintenance chief; but a creature living in an environment and#trying to survive. or something like that. does that make any fucking sense to anyone besides me? whatever.#anyways yapping over šŸ‘

any time u say ralsei is cute or sweet or whatever ur playing right into his trap btw. not ralseiā€™s trap, tobyā€™s
#this is not me saying ralsei is evil btw he is not. at least i dont think so. though he certainly is hiding something#but i mean specifically in the sense that i think toby very intentionally crafted ralsei to be a character that the player would latch onto#and really love. so that they will make choices that most strongly show off their love for him like making kris hug him and compliment him#and thats the catch. is that its not us doing these things with him - we are making KRIS who does not seem to be too fond of ralsei do them#almost paralleling this fondness that many players have for ralsei is the fondness/reverenceĀ that he seems to hold for US#and good lord do i find that fucking interesting#in any other media ''[character] loves you fans just as much as you love them!'' would be cute#but here im just like DAYUM WE'RE BOTH PARASOCIAL!#ralsei and the player trying to smooch each other while poor kris is in the middle of all this#im joking but this really is so fascinating to me. that there is this almost mutual sort of love between ralsei and players who like him#and the only way players can express that love is via an unwilling kris#and ralsei is possibly aware of that distinction and fully goes along with it KNOWING KRIS IS NOT OK WITH THIS bcuz he holds the player in#higher regard. oohghgughguhhhohoho#i hope this made any sort of sense i hadnt considered the player's side of things when it came to this before but now that i have#ough#serena.txt#deltarune#infizero.analysis

i think more worldbuilding should include more numbering systems. like obviously when creating a fake world or language our first thought is to take the basic 0-9 and make a representation of those, but does it actually make sense for your people here to be using base 10? what about base 2, base 16, other systems we use and systems we dont commonly use? what would make the most sense in the context?

once again thinking about trent startling easily
#so many possible routes to go with this#from comedic/silly (hes just Like That and its cute) to šŸ˜ to agonizing angst#i wonder what like. people think about this? in universe i mean?#whether it's people he actually talks to fairly regularly (ted and colin and beard perhaps--or#specifically roy who's already got some shit to work through i mean#when he makes jamie flinch i think that's something he could see as like. bad and he doesn't want to do that bc he Knows#but then like. it's funny when trent jumps right? bc he's just that asshole journalist? even if they're cool now it's not like it actually#is harmful or matters. right? but then confronting that like contradiction of like. if it isn't funny when you make jamie jump#why is it funny when trent jumps? just bc you dont KNOW if he was smacked around as a kid? would it matter even if he wasn't?#roy dealing with his anger issues and his way of scaring people around him (even in small seemingly ''harmless'' ways) you know what i mean#im not wording this well but that's fine#or to go back to colin like. just ough. something about that one in particular gets me they've got so many parallels with like. becoming a#bully to stop being a victim? and like. i don't know) ANYWAY all that versus like. just. random players? that trent doesn't talk to?#isaac who reads body language noticing how tense and jumpy he can be (versus how his body language opens up and loosens around ted perhaps)#or just. again. random players! fucking. jamie. ough.#or even like keeley or higgins or rebecca#i don't know can you tell im still obsessed with pov outisder? i just think its neat.#and even like... before. like obviously this is most prominent in s3 when he's willfully taking off the masks and letting down the walls#being more vulnerable--because of ted or even for ted--and like. he's very used to performing the scary cool unfazed journalist thing#so not only is he not hiding behind that persona but he's also more vulnerable and open and therefore its not surprising he'd be more jumpy#but like..... god..... do ythink he was always a little jumpy he just hid it better?#do ythink in a room full of sharp eyed journalists paid to observe any of them ever noticed the ruthless trent crimm badly startle#at loud noises/raised voices/a hand to close to his face? bc like. he would try very hard to make them not notice. but everyone slips up#do ythink one of them did anyway? i dunno i jsut think ough#trent crimm#ted lasso#now this would make a good 5+1 fic but i do i really need another one of those?

am finally back home and can say without a doubt that i am just fundamentally not built for long distance travel however the train was much nicer than planes
#that being said. pressurized cabins drive me insane a little bit#and also it gives you pretty intense sea legs for a While#like. the ones from the first trip hadnt gone away by the return one. so. might be stuck with that for a few days#we shall see#also ajr live fucks severely#the albums were already incredible but that was a goddamn religious experience#like. idk the way i think abt it is theyre more djs than a regular band esp w their performance showing the making of way less sad#like their music is very electronicā€š theyre making mixes of their own sound effects more than singing in one go#so like. the vocals were a teeensy bit rough at times#notably times it has taken me Literally Hundreds Of Hours Practice to be able to consistently sing along with#and times ive found its literally physically impossible to like. no matter what#idc how big your lungs areā€š there is no human on earth who can do that final run of karma in one breath#much less to An Entire Stadium After An Hour Of Jumping And Dancing And Singing Loud As Fuck#so like i dont blame them for thatā€š you dont go to live shows expecting it to be 100% perfect anyways jwbdjsbfksb#the trumpet however. well she was certainly playing sometimes. and was very enthusiastic about her flares.#however. in most of their songs they use midi trumpets to my ear at least#meaning she was likely an addition specifically for live performances and in my personal band kid opinion#prooobably was not in any of the like. higher tier bands? idk just. a lot of the mistakes she was making were hitting as stuff that got#taught out of us the instant we joined any band beyond regular concert#so i would guess she was probably just like. a friend who happened to play trumpet in high school or maybe even just middle school#and they knew that the trumpet parts in their pieces were big and distinct enough that like they /had/ to get a live player#and just kinda. didnt anticipate the audition -> performance gap#like. her tone was really fried the whole time like she was playing as hard as possible#which. she was mic'd. have the sound guy turn her up.#the way they did it made it sound like she was using a mute but not. like she only got the bad parts of a mute from it yknow#her tempo and timing were. bad. theres no nice way to put that one it just Was Badā€š like the trumpet runs in ajr songs arent. complicated#like. quite literally if you handed me the sheet music right now i would have it down perfect in a week at absolute most#and better than that player on sightread. like. we did so many sightreading drills.#like ill share my band kid creds if anyone cares but i need to emphasize this isnt me being braggy like. they genuinely just arent hard#fuck im out of tags. w/e i think only like one of yall also listens to them anyways so i can leave it there

reflecting on how all of my other DMs have gone above and beyond to lovingly weave my and my friends' backstory elements into the larger worldbuilding of the campaign by contrast to all of the ways Elyss' DM has gone out of his way to suppress or excise any influences her family may have ever had on anything and I'm genuinely near tears over it
#'I'm so surprised that Elyss wasn't more interested in going to her mom's hometown now that you're in her homelands!'#YOU! CHANGED Nami's backstory so that she never traveled anywhere before having Elyss#and YOU decided that she never tells Elyss literally anything even when directly asked#because you're so desperate to make sure your players never know literally anything about whatever might happen to them ever#YOU made it feel not only unrewarding but as if it was actively unwelcome for you if I even talked to my mother!!#'we're making this very dangerous journey (that you've been retconned not to have made yourself so you can't spoil it)--#--assuming we survive can you please tell us anything at all about what to expect the other country to be like?'#'well. it is different than here. it may not be what you expect.'#'oooh why didn't you go to hometown' SUCK MY DICK I ASSUMED YOU'D BE ANNOYED IF I WENT THERE HOPING TO FIND ANYTHING#of course ELYSS wants to try to touch any part of her own heritage she can!!#do you think she doesn't wonder whether she has family there? do you think maybe it's weird that she doesn't already know??#when *I* built Elyss' mother I made her a traveler from a far-off land so neither of us had to worry about it#YOU decided to send us to THAT far-off land specifically and then REFUSE to let Nami actually TELL me anything about it!!#feels very much like you don't want me to engage with that! feels very much like you ACTIVELY don't want me to explore that connection!#and if it felt like *Nami* was being secretive about it then Elyss would be even more keen to investigate herself--#but it's just part of a well-established pattern of NPCs going 'it's a secret teehee' for very obviously no other reason than that--#the DM just doesn't ever want us to have information even if NPCs have that information and have no reason not to share it#anyway. tl;dr grief over elyss yearning her whole life for somewhere to belong#but not going to her mother's birthplace because she has no reason to believe there's anything there for her.#for purely stupid empty meta reasons.#'I'm surprised you didn't go there šŸ‘€' so maybe he had something!#but my mother-- through you-- was so cagey about whether her parents even exist that I kind of just figured you didn't! so!!#about me#my OCs#elyss

did a dnd oneshot today kinda on a whim (signed up yesterday) and it was fun dgmw but also kinda made it clearer to me the kinda dnd im just not that into. we did very very little roleplay and most places we visited were quite summarily described and only there to get what we needed done and leave, and then after wrapping up our characters meeting, getting a quest, getting ready and going to the quest area in like 2 hours the rest was only combat. i got into it and all but ultimately not rly what i wanna do in dnd yknow... i love roleplaying and talking to npcs and exploring some worldbuilding and especially getting to do creative stuff and strategies, and i reckon this doesnt rly mesh well w the type of dnd that appeals more to people who most enjoy long and challenging fights against evil. i still had fun and enjoyed myself and the people were cool but also this is not something id wanna do a whole campaign of and its nice to get more experience to figure that out basically
#97#which is totally fair lol like.#im also aware that if youre not very into combat you prob should go for other systems than dnd#its mostly that well. the server i joined to find local games is only for dnd#so i dont rly have opportunities to learn other systems that prioritize stuff like rp and social strategy etc#also found out incidentally: wow i dont rly like playing monks#(ive only played bards and my wizard)#since im so not combat-focused i rly like characters who can use other skills to resolve challenges#like a bard w charisma or a magic user w magic (mostly illusions and enchantments rather than combat spells)#so yeah it was interesting to try out a different class but not that interesting to me unless like#i was in a game that was explicitly not combat focused so the class could be more rp-relevant#(i made this guy a monk bc i wanted a very religious character w very strict religious practices)#(specifically bc thatd be fun for rp but then we did only the bare minimum rp so.. yeah)#i also find that in combat i tend to think more 'what would my pc do in this fight'#rather than 'whats the objectively best tactical move to make'#and if the point is for the combat to be very challenging you dont rly get any leeway#to make suboptimal decisions on the basis that your character would make them#like. everyone was kinda like 'yea its not smart to go and try to free the shackled woman immediately#bc its likely that shes the medusa in disguise' (she was)#and im like. yeah but. my guy is an extremely religious monk who has sworn vows to protect the weak.#if he sees a helpless shackled woman his priority is helping her even if i as a player know shes probably a trap.#tbf i did not get to free her LOL so i didnt fuck over the party by trying to do that#and i did my fair share of damage dealing#but also going into a fight where the boss is a cursed human i wouldve liked#an opportunity to talk to her and try to reason w her and even if it failed getting an idea of why were fighting#thats just my player mentality ig haha im very 'well id like to know their motivations before killing them'

GMing doesn't have to be a chore and can in fact be extremely fun and rewarding but there are certain learned behaviors and attitudes that make things harder on the GM. Here are just a few tips on how to make the job easier on the GM which also may have the side effect of making the game more fun for everyone:
Everyone should make an effort to learn the rules. The rules are not there to make the game unfun and they are not a necessary evil, they are there to help carry the game so the group doesn't have to do all the work. And everyone taking part in learning the rules means the GM doesn't always have to be the one to remember how a rule works.
To that end, drop the "GM is the final word on the rules" attitude. This places the GM on a pedestal and can actually run counter to the idea of players learning the rules. If the GM has carte blanche to run over the rules it disincentivices players learning the rules because they can't actually rely on the text, and now you're right back to the GM having to carry the whole game. It is entirely okay for players to remind the GM how the rules should work and the group should agree on a method for dealing with rules disputes, and spot rulings should not rely on the GM making a unilateral decision but should rely on some kind of consensus.
Communicate your desires to the group and be willing to compromise; respect each other's prep. You may want a game that focuses on a long-form narrative but the GM wants to run an episodic series of largely unrelated singleton adventures. The GM is the one who is bringing the game, so ultimately be willing to compromise on your vision of the game and respect their prep. Ultimately, if the GM does not want to run the exact type of game you want and you can't see yourself having fun in the type of game they want to run, you will be doing everyone a favor by recusing yourself from the game.
Related to the above, communicating your desires should be an ongoing process. End each session by talking about what you want to do next and where you think the game should go. This will also make it easier for the GM to prep ahead.
This relates to learning the rules: pick a game that actually supports the type of game you want to run. Trust me, whatever time you think you will save by sticking to a game you already know you will make back by not having to fight the rules all the time and actually letting the rules take an active part in carrying the game.
You can literally just use prewritten adventures. Not every campaign or adventure needs to be custom-tailored for your specific group. Using prewritten adventures means that someone's already done a lot of the prep for you.
And finally, don't prep any more than you need to: there is this persistent myth that GMs need to have the entire campaign and world planned from the word go to begin with. While there is nothing wrong with expansive worldbuilding as such, you don't need to prep anything beyond what is strictly necessary. If you're running a wide open sandbox you can get by with a rough sketch of the world and only write things in as they become relevant. If you're running a megadungeon your players don't have to know that you've only prepared the first level for the first session, as long as you have a cohesive broad strokes plan that is perfectly fine. If you're running an episodic campaign, well, you don't need to have anything beyond the next episode prepped at a time, but of course having a rough plan can help.
Of course a lot of this is very opinionated and game specific: some games actively resist authoritative GM prep and want to involve each player equally in setting up the situation, and that's actually great, and in those types of games you should remember that the game is explicitly telling everyone to be involved in the prep. And once again, listen to what the rules have to say: they're there to tell you what the game wants you to do.

#I would play at Annabelleā€™s table#sheā€™d be such a storyspinner like wow#id probably get frustrated at how slowly she feeds me answers#but as someone who actively enjoys inflicting trauma and crimes on my rpg pcs#sheā€™d be an awesome dm#that said#I would absolutely never play with this group#that looks like a fucking nightmare#I wouldnā€™t be afraid I would just get frustated so fast#cause you know simon is that overly chaotic player who wonā€™t stop Randomly killing ppl#and he probably cheats his dice rolls#meanwhile Peter only shows up once every three sessions and still ends up not paying attention or leaving early#Jon it depends on his character development but#I think he would get overly specific on the mechanics and try to fight you if you wanted to bend from the official rules#which like fair but also sometimes you need to let it go for the sake of the game#he would be a great rp partner tho I think#you know once he got used to the improv his pc could have such a good convo#cause tbh in canon most of the time when heā€™s put on the spot heā€™s in very immediate danger of bodily harm#which tends to put a bit of a damper on anyoneā€™s acting skills#Oliver and Jared would be lovely to play with I think#although jared might play a PC that is like neutral evil and clashes with the rest of the party#but sometimes that can be fun#only thing Iā€™d fear with Oliver is heā€™d get a bit too self-centered with his own pc#which thatā€™s barely a fault basically everyone does that at some point bc we all love our special little boys#anyways. simon and Peter would make any ttrpg session unplayable#tma
