Thoughts on akutagawa being drawn with no highlights in his eyes, hair, coat, or on rashomon,,,like everything is drawn pure black? I like when he's drawn a little bit like not-human--contrasts real well with Atsushi's dilemma of being a tiger, personally thinking. Also like when he's drawn like a void. Little bit like the cryptid creachur he is. I think you wrote something about it in the tags on panels in his introduction in the Manga. I like to think other characters also see him the way we see him so his void ass scares the fuck out of others too. Man's skeevin and tweakin even in his design

I'm OBSESSED with Akutagawa's design. Look at him. This is what he looks like on a white background:

And this is what he looks like on a black background:

It's BRILLIANT. He literally disappears in the black. He's the ultimate monster. In his appearance, he embodies what above all is most scary for the human psyche: the darkness, the unknown. The way Harukawa took advantage of the the art rule of never using pure black by breaking it in the most clever way! No light gets reflected on him, because his form absorbs everything– is absolute darkness. Visually, his figure itself is Rashomon eating everything it encounters, and it's genius.

He is so nightmare coded. I love his big, inscrutable eyes that look like two voids, two black holes. I love how oftentimes you can't tell where Rashomon ends and where he starts, I love how sick and unhealthy he looks. I love how he looks scruffy like an abandoned dog. I love how young he looks– way younger than he is. It gives the impression of a ghost, someone who was killed before growing up and is now stuck with his young appearance no matter how many centuries pass.

I adore everything about these chapter 33 pages. The way he initially appears as just a single black shape, hardly resembling a human. His crunched, unnatural stance. The staggering. The way you can feel with your senses the thick and sticky blood. The top picture is the left page of the manga, so just imagine the visual impact of turning the page to be hit with an almost full-black page- it's meant to impress, it's meant to shake. The way he's one with the darkness: no textures on him, only white making out his outlines. The way you can't tell where his coat ends. His left arm hanging numb, limp, lifeless, inhuman. The spurts of blood on his face. His smile, how you won't notice it at first and how that makes it all the more disquieting; its juxtaposition with the violence that surrounds him and that he is the cause of. The way he covers his face, the impressions of hiding and looming. His face being split, which only adds to the horror elements. Akutagawa's character design as a whole is an ode to the gothic and grotesque.

And then this. Hello??????????????? The progression from how Akutagawa used to be to the last time we saw him alive is astonishing. It's upsetting. It really makes me wanna cry from a technical execution standpoint alone (imagine from a plot related standpoint). All the black is now replaced with predominant white, everywhere. His shirt is white and candid and pure, emphasizing contrast with the splash of blood in a way that almost results sickening. The blood on him is his this time. His face looks rounder, and healthier, and he overall looks more mature. His smile is sincere and genuine, it's light, it's affectionate. This scene is the culmination of Akutagawa's character both visually and thematically: the monster, Akutagawa, too, can be good, and arguably had good within him since the very start. Does it really matter if he lives after this? His character already developed to be the best version of himself‚ and this panel here is the proof.

maca: SHORT question. why is nicaise always asking about juice // damen says “You don’t even like juice" all the time? i dont think i get the mean of it thank you

nicaise doesn't like juice, but he likes making sure damen remembers this about him. he's testing damen and their relationship, trying to see if damen knows things about him, knows what he likes and doesn't like, etc.

like here:

“Then tough luck,” Damen says. “You’re not getting a beer. Water or coffee, your choice.” Nicaise’s frown slips for a second. “Don’t you have juice or something?” “You don’t even like juice.”

and here, nicaise is annoyed because he views damen offering him juice as damen having forgotten he doesn't like it:

“Are you sure? I’ve got coffee, tea, juice—” “I don’t like juice,” Nicaise says, annoyed.

and then also here:

Nicaise ignores him. The new slice in his hand is bigger than the last. “Do you have juice? I’m thirsty.” “You don’t drink juice. There’s water and…” Damen squints at the fridge. “Kombucha?”

it's a comfort thing for nicaise. he mentions it, damen replies with the obvious thing "you don't like juice", and that makes nicaise feel sure of their bond. it's just a small mind game nicaise likes to play.

I think it's very interesting to deconstruct just how much value is placed on the human spoken word in our westernized society.

That even when it is pointed out that spoken human language is not the most effective way of communicating with an individual, whenever I post dog button hate posts i get tons of pushback in the most willfully ignorant way. people are SO caught up in making this human spoken language THE way of communicating that it is now impossible, if not incredibly difficult for them to think otherwise.

it is human hubris that insists other creatures should rise to our linguistic level, when it is pretty close to impossible, instead of us, with our large ass brains primed for communicating in many multiple ways and languages kneel down to theirs.

So when i say insisting dogs and/or other animals communicate with human spoken language as their primary form of communicating with us is a HUMAN failure? I mean it.

It does not mean that buttons do not necessarily have fun uses, but do not think this is a success on us, on people, rather than a success on the patience it must take a dog to try its best to communicate and only get heard from when it uses a device and language inherently foreign to it when it has a clear, concise and honest language it already speaks to us.

theory: elysium grew up poor and had to become an assassin to raise the money necessary for their brother, maybe to fund his medical care, but it wasn't enough and he died anyway. or maybe he needed the money to pull them out of their lower class status and carve out a better life for them both. or maybe one of the targets he killed had a close one who decided to take an eye for an eye and killed their brother in revenge. and as for why he knows sign language, i'm thinking either their brother was deaf or he had to learn it in order to communicate silently while on the job.

Honestly, I don't really know? 😅 He kind of only "exists" in my writing until he meets once with Penelope at like, 13-14 years of Odysseus being gone. Sthenelus is, ofc, with him. :D And he tells some stories to Penelope and kind of hangs out with Telemachus before they're off again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

After that, I don't think much or plan much for him 😅 "You played your narrative purpose, now you are free to do what you please, little dude."

I have to laugh at your surprise with the fighting in hockey because I don’t even follow it that closely but I grew up right outside of Philadelphia so I am of course a flyers fan because to root for anything other than a Philly team would be blasphemy (though everyone in the family roots for Michigan in college hockey because I went there)

we went to the game against the rangers last month and the little pre-show with Gritty was literally him doing the training montage from Rocky (do people outside the US know Rocky or know just how important a Philly thing that movie is?) and then “getting into the ring” with a guy in a rangers jersey and “knocking him out”

lmao youre definitely allowed to laugh at me, i am too!! i watch a lot of handball, which i know isnt a thing in america so i wont blame you for not knowing what it is, but it's also a really physical sport where you're allowed to tackle each other to the ground and push each other around and so on (without any protection, though) – BUT i have never in my 22 years seen an actual fistfight on the court. if two players get angry at each other, they can kinda like shove each other a little bit then the refs jump in instantly and they get penalties (and can be forced to leave the match). but ive never never never seen even a single punch thrown. so like idk i knew it was physical but it still surprised me!!

i actually rewatched the devils/rangers game yesterday (it was on the tv surprisingly lol) and i think one of the main things that hit me was like… how silly it looked? maybe something is wrong with me for not finding fights like that cool or attractive or whatever?? but esp when they had their gloves on and stood there, it looked like they were just bad boxers 😭 and then there was one sequence where the two players just kept on missing each other bcs after trying to throw a hit, they would dodge, so they just kept going back and forth like that without anyone actually landing a hit??? 😭😭

THOUGH!! just remembered that i watched the uhhhh i guess it was the junior world finals? almost a year ago? usa vs sweden? seeing the fight at the end there just bcs the swedes were losing 😐 at least fight bcs of something reasonable, not just "we're losing, i have to show him that i hate him" or whatever

I love how back in 2020 when sabrina did her response to drivers license we all said she was doing it to ride olivia's song success and gain clout and her fans were screaming and crying "she's been famous for a decade!!!".... and then after said clout she proceeded to get bigger than olivia herself. almost as if we were right lol
