as we alr know sollux's rejection of participation somewhat mirrors dave's rejection of heroism, but even without getting cooked to completion i still find sollux's character v compelling beyond the fourth wall

as someone who doesnt get a pinch of that Protagonist Sparkle to begin with, he can openly say he wants to leave anytime…. and unlike dave, he actually Can leave the scene anytime. but he can never be truly Free from the story via permanent character death like the other trolls.

his irrelevancy is indeed relevant - he’s there so u can point him out.

while his image is intended to be a relic of past internet subculture, his role is not only about hehehaha being a Chad or a 2000s cyberforum 2²chan haxxor ragequit gamebro.

his continued existence also happens to add a Bit to the overarching themes of homestuck! a Bit that gives him longer-lasting thematic relevance compared to the trolls who could’ve had more character potential but didnt get to survive beyond the main story.

the Bit in question:

his defiance contributes to the illusion of agency (treating characters = people with autonomy). he’s “aware” of it, and that recognition is worth noting enough to forcibly keep him alive as both reward and punishment.

considering how his personality & classpect is designed its definitely a very haha thing for hussie to do LOL. he’s made to be op asf so he's resigned to doing dirty work, gradually deteriorating along the way but never truly dying. as fans have mentioned before, him openly rejecting involvement after a while of grim tolerance is like if the sim u were controlling suddenly stopped, looked up and gave u the finger while u were step six into the walkthrough for Every Possible Sim Death Animation.

but since he’s just a sim… the more he hates it, the more you keep him around. if ur sim started complaining abt your whimsical household storyline you’d definitely keep that little fuck.

but yeah i like that sollux is just idling. the significance of his presence being that one dude who's always reliably Somewhere, root core Unchanged, no individual ambitions (possibly due to fear of consequence?), and design-wise: a staple representative product of his time.

compared to dirk's character, who has aged phenomenally well into the present (themes of control + AR + artificial intelligence, clearer exploration around navigating relationships/sexuality, infinite possibilities of self-splinterhood and trait inheritance), sollux's potential is really... contained. bitter. defeatist. limiting and frustrating in the way old tech is.

the world continues moving on to shinier, brighter, more advanced automated things - minimalist and metaverse or whatever but sollux is still here 🧍‍♂️ going woohoo redblue 3d. (tho personally i imagine his vibe similar to what the kids call cassette futurism on pinterest mixed w more grimy grunge insectoid influences eheh)

conceptually-speaking,

at the foundation of it all, the rapid pace of modern development was built off the understanding of ppl like sollux in the past, who were There actively at work while the dough was still beginning to rise

thats one of the cool things abt the idea of trolls preceding humans! the idea that trolls like sollux excelled back when lots of basic shit still needed to be discovered, building structures like networks and codes from scratch, and humans will eventually inherit and reinvent that knowledge in ways that become so optimized it makes the old manual effort seem archaic, slow, and labour-intensive.

but despite information/resources/shortcuts being more accessible now, much of the new highly-anticipated stuff released on trend still end up unfinished, inefficient, or expiring quickly due to cutting corners under severe capitalistic pressures

meanwhile, some of the old stuff frm past generations of thorough, exploratory and perfectionistic development still remains working, complete, and ever so sturdy.

those things continue to exist, just outside our periphery with either:

zero purpose left for modern needs (outdated/obsolete)

or

far too important to replace or destroy, bcs of its surprisingly essential and circumstantial usefulness in one niche specific area.

I am an absolute sucker for liminal spaces, dreamcore, whatever you call that whole 'aesthetic'. The very specific yet vague childhood nostalgia it draws on, the loneliness, the emptiness, combined with a creeping sense that something isn't quite right here. I love it, and I eat it right up.

The millisecond you show what isn't right- add actual horror elements, or God forbid some sort of entity- the entire specific vibe that draws me in just evaporates. Endless empty corridors? Hell yes. You know what? I do really love seeing black simmers who have the neutral/all-white aesthetic. Especially those who have darker skinned sims and fully black families. We’re used to seeing it a very exclusionary and Eurocentric manner. You don’t see very many black sims or black simmers in those spaces, because it’s as if the aesthetic wasn’t meant for us. As if we’re not allowed to partake in it. So, I like seeing black simmers that do. I like seeing them take up space. We can absolutely have a “soft sims aesthetic” too with our black sims, or our alpha cc, or whatever else we choose to play with. We can do it all. (And we can still be “soft” and curse. Smoke too. Brb finna make a neutral color palette rolling tray <3)

B/c I have low key had Transformers on the brain lately, I came up with a crossover i'm surprised hasn't happened yet.

Transformers meets Doctor Who

Like, there is SO much one can do with this. So here's one potential idea that was rattling around inside my head.

The Doctor picks up a distress signal with the TARDIS. He's not sure who or what sent it, but they're in trouble. So he follows it across the cosmos and lands on a planet.

The first thing he notices is this planet is big. Like, larger than any planet he's ever stepped on before, it's colossal. And it's alive! He can just feel that by setting foot on it. But it's also not a threat so he stick a pin in that observation and find the distress signal.

And in the process crosses paths with these absolutely enormous robots. Except, unlike most robots these aren't built or programmed by someone, they're *alive*. And not in the crime against nature way that Cybermen are. They're mechanical and biological all at the same time. They're living, sentient beings.

Honestly I thin k he'd be *ecstatic* about this finding.

And this is where he learns that he's landed upon a plant known as Cybertron and these giant lifeforms are the resident, dominant life forms. These Cybertronians introduce themselves as Autobots and wonder why there is a human on their planet (have they heard of Time Lords? idk, either no or only in legends as one of the races consumed by the thing known as the Time War, something they narrowly escaped getting roped into, perhaps *because* of Primus' intervention).

Anyways, they're tracking the signal as well, figuring it could be another Cybertronian in trouble. But they don't know really. But they do want to get there before the Decepticons do (as there's no doubt that they've picked up the signal as well and are on their way).

So they head to the site of the signal and find a downed ship. But not one of Cybertronian origin.

But it IS one The Doctor is familiar with. To his horror.

It's a Cybership. And upon inspection, they can't find any bodies. Which means there are Cybermen now loose upon Cybertron.

Oh no.

Obviously, they probably think they can handle a few small humanoid machines. I mean look how big they are in comparison.

Until they find a partially converted Cybertronian-Cyberman monstrosity lumbering around (the Cybermen, in an attempt to repair themselves from the injuries sustained in the crash, started cannibalizing and assimilating with the corpses of the fallen that they found). A Cyberman with access to Cybertronian tech sounds like a nightmare to The Doctor.

This all probably culminates in a temporary truce and alliance between the Autobots and Decepticons to bring down this new foe that is very much a threat to both of them (as the 'Cons probably figured out the hard way that they cannot be reasoned with as all they want is to make everything like them).

I really need to talk more about Pirates as a sub-genre of action adventure fiction as well as fantasy. It's so under-explored on the literature side of storytelling, and the genre only fares a little better in films and television.

Of course also in the fic space, pirate AUs are fairly niche (outside of fandoms centered around pirate stories of course)

There is a lot of untapped potential in the genre, with a lot of really unique tropes and plot devices you can't really find in other sub-genres.
