Vampires being Southern confederates in the American pop culture tradition makes so much sense to me logically. Not saying that I don't believe it's propaganda, because it absolutely is. But planter vampires and confederate vampires (Jasper, Damon, Lestat, Louis, Bill Compton) make a lot of sense in the American context, as much as aristocratic and “Old World” vampires make sense in the British context.
If vampires are inherently Gothic, then vampires must symbolize and personify the vestiges of a long-gone past – one which only simmers to life from far below the surface when it’s time to reveal the horrors, or the romance, of what is usually an oft-forgotten history. In 19th-century Britain, through vampire short stories and novellas, and later Dracula, vampires evoked the (misunderstood and misappropriated) time of the Goths. This, in turn, brought to readers’ minds images of towering castles, the superstition of Eastern Europe, and the so-called barbarism of the Old World, that which was made to appear antiquated in its monstrosity and secret imperialist desires. (*sarcastic voice*) The Old World was so at odds with enlightened, modern, industrializing Britain! It’s no wonder that vampires in British literature took the forms of counts, noblemen, and princes – they were the conspiring, powerful leaders of the Old World, or the medieval world, or some forgotten pre-Industrial feudal world.
And if we are to apply this concept of what vampires should represent for the United States, it only makes perfect sense that vampires would be planters and confederates. Slavers, planters, and confederate fighters also evoke the Old America, conjuring images of Southern chivalry, the great Antebellum, and the humble pioneers of this free nation of God and goodness and prosperity! And then the confederates got their ass beat really bad. And they could only hold on to these romantic images of that former “honour and glory” through propagation of the Lost Cause myth. What better vehicle to wield this romanticisation of, yunno, the defense of chattel slavery than through vampire softbois?! Immortal beings who symbolize the survival and resilience of the Antebellum South through time. Why don’t we make them hot guys who were just protecting the South in our pop culture? Sure. If the vestiges of America’s long-gone past are slavery and genocide and, uh, chivalric Southern honour, then vampires do a pretty effective job of reminding us of this horrifying/romantic (you choose here) history. Spoiler alert: it’s horrifying.
#also idk if any of you have watched La Révolution on netflix but in that show the vampires are#the nobles of Versailles! which includes King Louis#and that makes perfect sense to me because monarchism is the ‘ugly vestige of history’#in the french context#yeah vampires mean something hoes that’s right#also the sheer amount of Gone With the Wind propaganda on tvd???#also abraham lincoln vampire hunter makes even more sense now#the vampire diaries#damon salvatore#tvd#true blood#bill compton#twilight#jasper hale#iwtv#interview with the vampire#anne rice#lestat de lioncourt#vampires#vampire lore#us civil war#gothic fiction#gothic lit#gothic#english lit#english literature#dracula#bram stoker#halloween#spooky season

So I watched Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame last night and I had a thought.
Notre Dame being one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, I'm curious if Nocturne is going to adhere to the rule of vampires not being able to set foot on holy ground and if so, will Notre Dame Cathdral will be used as a point of sanctuary for our heroes at some point?
Castlevania vampires burn in sunlight and fear the Cross, but the animated series is pretty vague on whether or not consecrated ground or a house of worship is off limits. We see the Night Creatures are able to enter the Gresit Cathedral easily enough (among other chapel settings in multiple games,) but Alucard confirms they are unaffected by sunlight in Season 4, showing they don't have the same limitations as vampires. Trevor also makes a joke about catching fire since he's an excommunicate, so the idea of someone 'unholy' going up in flames within a church is not unheard of here.
In Season 2, the vampires all question whether or not running water will harm them. This is revisited in the final battle when the undead Bishop blesses the Danube. (Which...is that still holding up? Is the second longest river in Europe completely impassable to vampires?)
As far as I've personally seen, the anime Shiki is the only series I can think of that addresses the holy ground rule, so I think it would be interesting if Nocturne made use of that lore. Plus, it would be reminiscent of the games' save rooms, which are often small chapels or confessionals where the enemy can't follow the player.
That said, there's no real guarantee if Notre Dame or any other specific church or cathedral will make an appearance in the narrative. Actually, I'm almost positive the building the above gif is supposed to be the Palace of Versailles, home of the French court. Which seems to have been overrun by vampires, so...really wanting to know what happened there if that's the case.
Palace of Versailles
Aside from some of the windows...Versailles, maybe?
The original series used real locations present day Romania like Târgoviște, Brăila, Lindenfeld, Dănești, and Argeș, so I wouldn't be surprised if Nocturne followed that pattern with the Palace of Versailles, Paris, and maybe Notre Dame.

Season 7B confirmed on Netflix
Just in:
Season 7B will thankfully be available in Romania and other EU countries, starting November 23rd (November 22nd, in the US - different time zone).
I suppose we'll have the same drip/drop system, with one episode per week, on Friday nights, at midnight. The #Jottings series will, then, resume on this page accordingly.
I can only hope by the time Season 8 airs, I will be done with the books. But I wouldn't bet the farm on it, to be honest.
We are ready, Shipper Mom and I. This would be an interesting experiment (I am still embarrassed to watch The Wedding with this very nice and very open-minded lady - and not saying it just because it's well... Mom...).
On a completely different level, I am paging all those who confirmed they are willing and ready to meet & greet (and hug, and cheer) in Paris to contact me in DM. Let's get organized a bit, but no pressure either: we've still got time, still it would be nice to be/keep in touch, for a start. Thanks to @pamalissou, we now know taxi is another good option, for the Versailles trip.
I cannot wait!

Reading Wrapped: My top ten books/series of 2024!
More about each below the cut
The Familiar This one was my absolute favourite reads of the year. I loved the historical setting, the fantasy elements, and the romance. The ending had me on the verge of tears, and it's a read I will treasure. Leigh really took her time to make sure to respect the characters and their setting well, which I appreciate as historical fiction is a very big hit-or-miss for me. In this case, big hit!
The Poppy War I've only read the first so far, as I'm eagerly awaiting my turn at the library for the second book in this series. I'd long been recommended this one as a darker toned adult fantasy novel, and at first, it definitely felt more YA because of the academy setting, but once it kicked into gear, there was absolutely no question who the target audience was, and it was ME. I'm very eager for the next.
One Dark Window I've only read the first of the duology as I am once again waiting my turn for the second in the series at the library, but I am eager. I loved the vibes of this book, with the tarot card like magic, the haunted forest and how the environment itself is almost a character. The romance was cute, and I liked the larger cast of characters dynamics with each other.
Vampyria I've read the Vampyria trilogy and I really enjoy it. Vampires at Versailles? I mean you had me there but throw in the morally grey protagonist and the little romance and I was sold. This series is originally in French, and that's the language I read it in, but for Anglophones, you may find it as "The Court of Shadows" by Victor Dixen.
A Fire Born of Exile So interestingly, I added this one to my list as a Fantasy Romance, and it turned out to not be fantasy at all. Nonetheless, I quite enjoyed this Sci-Fi Space Opera Sapphic Romance based on The Count of Monte Cristo. Set in the Xuya Universe, I was a bit lost as I was thrown into the deep end of world-building (honestly I'm still not fully sure I understand what mindships are) with no help. I just kind of accepted that though and kept going, and I'm glad I did - I loved the characters, the themes of revenge, grief, familial piety, etc. I'm definitely going to read more by this author!
Firefly Lane I often see posts about how friendship is underrated by storytellers and to everyone who wants a story focused on friendship: This is for you. I swear. We follow the lifelong friendship of two women, through ups and downs, trials and tribulations, through moving across the country, through marriage, through childbirth, through career, etc. There's also a netflix show, which is how I ended up stumbling onto the book - both are great imo.
I'll be Waiting I loved this horror stand-alone for its exploration of grief, the past haunting us, etc. I also really appreciated that the protagonist has a chronic illness, because it's not the type of thing I see in many novels, and while I'm not an expert in CF to know how well the representation was done, I liked that it was something integral to the character - not something to 'overcome' but to live with.
Those Across The River This one came highly recommended to my by my husband as soon as he finished with it. He said that as a fan of gothics, I had to read it, and I'm glad I did! This historical fiction is a southern gothic and explores the concept of sins-of-the-father with a particular horror monster I love but is rarely seen in gothic novels. So finding a gothic novel that actually has that monster? Hell.Yes. Now excuse me while I go put a hold on every book this author wrote in my library.
IT Oh, IT. This one I have mixed feelings about, but it was definitely one of the books that occupied a lot of my brain space during the year, and I enjoyed it quite a bit for the most part, so it earns it's spot in my top 10. For much of the book, I felt it was Stephen King at his prime, weaving a tale of slow horror with a large cast, a whole town to wreak havoc in, and multiple time periods. I really did like this book and the characters a lot… but I really didn't like the ending. Still, for the first ~90+%, I was super there for it.
From Blood and Ash/Fire in the Flash Is is cheating to put two interconnected series set in the same universe as one? It doesn't matter because this is my list and I make the rules! This one I also have a complicated relationship with but is one of those series I definitely enjoyed/thought about a lot. I really like the romance with Poppy/Casteel and Sera/Nyktos, and a lot of the world-building, honestly, I do think it's a really good series overall, but sometimes the writing/writing style isn't necessarily my jam. I like the rest enough to power through the parts I don't like, and what I do like is enough to live in my brain for a bit after reading it. I'm eager for the final (Poppy and Cas) FBAA book coming out this year to see where the story will end!

I been on here for at least an entire month or so, I feel I should properly introduce myself or something
I'm genderfluid and prefer to go by they/them pronouns I'm autistic as well which is most likely the reason I get so passionate about my special interests. I made this blog to post and reblog about Saint Seiya because the entire franchise is one of my biggest special interests and I don't really get to share about it much since hardly anyone I know likes it !! I post alot of gay stuff because I'm very gay myself ya know.
I'm canadian BTW !!!
I enjoy watching anime and reading manga, fanfiction, listening to music, collecting dolls, figures, plushies ect. I also like drawing and even have fanart and some of my own ocs that I designed but I don't post them here mainly because I feel nobody would care to see them given that my skills are basic lol.
My favorite anime series are: OG Saint seiya including the hades ovas,Saint seiya lost canvas, saint seiya soul of gold, B't X, Shurato, ronin warriors, fuma no kojiro, yu yu hakusho, patalliro, berserk, devilman, blackjack, inuyasha, yugioh (season 0 and duel monsters), rurouni kenshin, princess princess, gravitation, brave dagwon, gundam wing, nightwalker the midnight detective, saint beast and the rose of versailles.
My favorite Saint seiya pairings: Hyoga/Shun, Shiryu /Seiya, Milo/Camus, Degel/Kardia, Mu/Shaka,Deathmask/Aphrodite, Minos/Albafica, Dohko/Shion . I like other ships but these are the ones I especially love to see fanart and fanfiction for Hyoshun is my main Ship ! Shirseiy and Camilo are close to being second.
Favorite bands: X japan, Seikima II, Malice mizer, Lareine, versailles, hizaki grace project, phantasmagoria, Syndrome, D, shazna, Kuroyume, missalina rei, madeth gray'll, baiser, Hanoi rocks and michael monroe, the sweet, Kiss, david bowie, the cure, dead or alive, gene loves jezebel, japan and david sylvian, cinderella, wasp, iron maiden, judas priest, motley crue, and many others mostly visual kei, and 80s music lol.
things I dislike: homophobia, transphobia, ableism, sexism and just bigotry in general, people who attack others for their ships its just juvenile imo, people who get mad if I dont instantly reply, that crappy netflix remake that made Shun into a girl..just no.

I once saw a post about Netflix versailles that was like “none of the gay shows coming out rn can hold a candle to what those fags from Versailles had going on” and now that’s all I can think of whenever I’m contemplating watching the show. I want to meet those fags from Versailles. I want to find out what those fags from Versailles had going on

HI! I'm new and I admit that I haven't had the chance to explore your blog and masterlist very well yet (so in case someone has already asked a similar question, I apologize😭)
In any case, I wanted to ask you if you have any TV series/films to recommend since I'm in abstinence from Cesare/Lucrezia and The Borgias. I love their chemistry so much... And in general I also like the series so I was wondering if you (or others) had any advice🖤 I know that there's a TV series called "i Medici" but I don't think I found it in your masterlist, so I don't think it's worth it😅
Anyway, thanks whatever the answer will be🖤 Like I said I have yet to fully explore your blog etc but
1. I'm in love with your blog (I'll have to go and look at the section of the masterlist on Cesare and Lucrezia again because I have a bad memory, but I had already read all the posts🥺)
2. like I said I've been in withdrawal for a while and I miss Cesare and Lucrezia, so I would like some advice
(Last thing, I apologize because English is not my first language, so... Sorry😅)
- C.
Thank you! And no need to apologize, I understood your ask perfectly well :)
I did watch a bit of Medici, I just didn't end up sticking to it but I know initiumseries liked it so you could check it out and see if you like it.
There's of course The Tudors, which came out before The Borgias but it's the same creators.
People have liked Netflix's Borgias. I've never watched it, though. Francois Arnaud is my Cesare and no one else.
There's The Pillars of the Earth, the main couple is not like Cesare and Lucrezia but they still have quality angst.
Spartacus. I always recommend Spartacus for people who like passionate, tortured, angsty love stories but there is gratuitous violence and sex.
I never watched Versailles but people seemed to like it.
I guess there's technically The Great. I'm not a fan of Catherine and Peter and I can kind of take or leave the show itself but it might satisfy an itch.
