Entry 5
Having been blessed enough to intern at SEN for over four months has been an amazing experience, that has come with some achievements and milestones. My very first article was published on my first day at SEN, which has been mentioned in a previous entry.
Having completed three subjects focused on journalism and writing, being able to step foot in a professional organisation and have my name published on my first day was incredible. As this was a stepping stone to what I was to write further on in my internship, getting to write some smaller pieces to start my time at SEN was good for my writing growth.
From a sports media perspective, “the internet has created a seismic shift in how people engage with information” (Wolter, 2020, p. 93). A more personal achievement for me throughout my time at SEN, was seeing their target audience respond to the articles I had written, stating either their pleasure or dissatisfaction. Both types of feedback I received were encouraging to read to see where to potentially improve for the next piece of written work.
The next big achievement came shortly after when I was able to write a piece regarding a former Melbourne Cup-winning horse named Verry Elleegant.
A talented horse who won the major race in 2021 made the shocking move to Europe where it had initially struggled mid-way through 2021. The article focused on the horse’s owner in Brae Sokolski, who remained positive that his horse would bounce back following a disappointing first race in France.
Another achievement was being able to write a personal piece regarding Victorian horse trainer Natalie Young. However, it was quite a sad piece as the angle of this article was focused on Young’s battle with breast cancer.
Though what was inspiring about writing this was getting to listen to Young speak about overcoming her health problem and acting as a source of inspiration for other women dealing with the same problem.
By week 11 at SEN I was able to notch up 50 articles/previews for the organisation. Writing about the racing industry was fascinating and helped me for what was to come. That being getting to switch sporting codes and write about cricket.
I was fortunate enough to complete a preview of the West Indies cricket team who took on the Australia test team in the late part of 2022.
(West Indies Preview - completed for SEN)
With my father being from Trinidad and Tobago, getting to do this piece of content for very special for me from a personal perspective.

Did Randwick Sprint win the Melbourne Cup or the Golden Slipper?
Is Everest better than the Melbourne Cup and the Golden Slipper? The proposal came from Leslie Bridge, the living daughter of coach Les Bridge, who climbed the Gold Mountain with Classique Legend in 2020. Of course, her father also won the Golden Slipper with Sir Dapper in 1983 and the Melbourne Cup four years later with Kinsey, long before he imagined the 1,200-meter Randwick sprint. After the Classique Legend victory, we were dining at a Chinese restaurant – some distance from his old spot, “Mr Duck’s”, better known as BBQ King on Sussex Street – on the land formerly occupied by the old Victoria Park racecourse near Kensington. After nearly choking on crab sauce and black bean sauce, the realization of the generation gap became a reality when Leslie and her brother JJ championed the modern day event. They clearly did not get the full effect of the Sir Dapper-Kensei era. The Golden Slipper, for two-year-olds, may not have been one of my favorite races, but it produced better youngsters when Sir Dapper scored more than the more recent classes. Like Mount Everest, it thrived with a captive audience. Two-year-olds became the flavor of the times. It’s true that Kensei wasn’t a major Melbourne Cup winner, but it was a testament to the trainer’s sense of horse and great navigator Larry Olsen. Kensei wouldn’t make the Top 10 Bridge horses, but the Big One in the ’80s had even more national appeal. The imported horses certainly boosted the resident’s level, but they wiped out the local intrigue, which thankfully resurfaced last year with Verry Elleegant. Kerrin McEvoy salutes as Classique Legend beats Everest in 2020.attributed to him:GT However, the Melbourne Cup is still the race that stops the nation. Traditions and memories cannot be bought, regardless of the prize money. Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant shocked by Australian coach Chris Waller’s Francis-Henri Graffard
Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant is set to campaign in Europe this summer after a move from Australian manager Chris Waller to Chantilly-based Francis-Henri Graffard. Montefilia upsets Verry Elleegant to evoke ghost of Ajax from 1939
Jockey Jason Collett was surprised when he walked out to ride Montefilia and was met by a bullish Payne, who had told her owners the night before he thought they had the measure of the champion Verry Elleegant. “I have never seen David like that, he was so confident in the mare,” Collett said. “She is a different beast now, and when I went for her she just flowed so strongly.” Part-owner Hugh…

#Repost from our conservation friend...@ginatheresarobertson @download.ins --- Reposted from @markpearsonmp It's unbelievable. A racehorse trained by the same team as this year’s Melbourne Cup winner died on Melbourne Cup day at Sydney’s Royal Randwick. Six-year-old gelding The Grinder suffered a sesamoid fracture during Race 8 at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day and was subsequently killed. His training team, lead by Chris Waller, celebrated Verry Elleegant’s Melbourne Cup win on Tuesday, posting celebration photos on social media before The Grinder’s body had even gone cold. They didn’t mention The Grinder’s death at all, and neither have the media. If Th Grinder had died during the Melbourne Cup, his death would be front-page news. Instead, he is like many other victims of the horse racing industry: easily forgotten and easily replaceable. This industry is a disgrace. The horse racing industry needs an urgent welfare intervention. Laws need to change so racehorses are really protected. That's why here in NSW I have introduced the Racehorse Legislation Amendment (Welfare and Registration) Bill to Parliament. If passed, this bill will: * Ban the slaughter of ex-racehorses * Ensure mandatory re-homing * Establish birth to death tracking * BAN whips, spurs and tongue-ties in horse racing The time will come when racing is banned for good and until that day, we must fight to protect racehorses from the cruelest aspects of this horrific industry. Please support my bill by signing the petition: link in bio 📢🐎 #NupToTheCup #HorseRacingKills #YouBetTheyDie #animalrights #animalprotection #horseracing #horses #nswpol #auspol #vegan https://www.instagram.com/p/CV4FVG7NLCi/?utm_medium=tumblr

Verry Elleegant is a keen-going horse, who doesn’t enjoy being cluttered up behind others or being hemmed in towards the running rail.
