Banner reads 琉球国演劇 (Ryukyu Koku Engeki), roughly translated as "The Ryukyu Province Theatrical Troupe".

Although there are many photos of Dotombori Street during the late 1800s, as fate would have it, a famous Japanese photographer named Kimbei Kusakabe just happened to be in town, and took the photo posted, showing their temporary banner on display under a blue sky. His studio back in Yokohama printed it out under the sun on paper coated with egg white, then hand colored the resulting photograph.

Memories of old Tokyo...

How does AI see pre-war Tokyo in its "imagination"? A large Japanese city on canals, full of wooden traditional urban houses machiya with Buddhist temples and pagodas stretches to the horizon. In the background, the majestic Mount Fuji. Before the war, trams also appeared.

This world disappeared brutally at the end of World War II.1,667 tons of incendiary bombs were dropped on the city.A gigantic fire consumed almost the entire city. In this hell, almost 100,000 people died (the exact figures are unknown).

Today, each preserved traditional city house in the so-called machiya style is a true treasure and a witness to the former glory of the eastern capital of Japan.
