OH MY GOD !!!! WAIT!!! BECAUSE LIKE!!!! it's also the way that not even Zhan Tiri was able to piece the incantations together throughout her entire mortal years (that she literally needed to appear in varian's dream to stir him in the correct clue but relied on him to actually decipher it because she couldnt) and yet it only took Varian a mere five weeks to crack the demanitus scroll's secrets and make an entire translation key (that he was able to remember by memory as well mind you) for it. Like yes, that absolutely displays the level of intelligence and how truly gifted this kid is, but it could indeed be hintin at something more!!

One thing I realized while rewatching the Tangled: The Series finale is that Varian’s father and Lord Demanitus look awfully similar…

(Quirin looks more soft than him ofc but to be fair I’m talking about, like, a guy who lived a thousand years before Quirin)

The Dark Kingdom has had their descendants for a long time, his cousin Horace was the one who was supposed to be the holder of the moonstone and he left him alone, just like his mother and father did in this cold and boring kingdom, he was forced to learn how to fight, how to manage to react appropriately to royal situations, but the worst one out all of them was the moonstone.

He never asked to be the only last descendent of the royal blood.

He never wanted to have anything to do with the moonstone!

But his "family" would never listen

So I have a fic that I've never been able to write because every time I've tried, I can't get it started in a satisfactory fashion. It's pretty much inspired by the music from Tangled: The Series because that series has music that has no right to be that good.

The premise heavily depends on the backstory HC I have for Cater. A short synopsis is that Cater finds out from Jamil, that Kalim only joined the Light Music Club, and befriended him because his father told him to.

For the record, Kalim did nothing Malicious here. He took his father's recommendation and found out that Cater and Lilia were cool people and he liked hanging out with them. So while he *met* him because of his father's suggestion, he didn't actually befriend him for this reason. Other than like one AU I've written and when he got possessed at Halloween I don't think Kalim would ever actually do something to hurt someone like that.

He also finds out that the reason Lilia joined the Light Music Club and why Malleus avoids him is because they figured out his family ancestry (something Cater doesn't even know) and thought he was a threat to Malleus at first. Again like Kalim, Liliia found out that Cater wasn't a threat, didn't realize that he was anything but human, and actually a pretty chill guy and fun to hang out with. But Malleus still avoided him to be safe.

There is a lot of explanation of what exactly my HC background for Cater is, and I should probably make a post about that, but not here! The basics are Cater's father is super rich, and his mother is descended from Fae royalty that everyone thinks is wiped out. And he has a really bad relationship with his family and feels like an outcast/not really part of them. Anyway back on track!

Specifically the songs I have in mind are: (All the songs ignore the actual romantic interest, I've given them to who I feel fits the role properly)

Everything I Thought I Knew: Cater discovering everything and finding out about his ancestral family and everything else that's happened.

Ready as I'll Ever Be: (Of course, this song is overused but still good) Cater breaking down, feeling hurt, I know the idea that Cater could kidnap MALLEUS is a stretch but I'm going to say Iron was involved somehow -_- (things I'm still working through/reasons it's not written yet XD)

Crossing the Line: I've always seen Riddle and Cater's relationship as something that Riddle cherishes, he takes Cater at face value, and really respects him. Cater on the other hand having always hidden his real self still views the friendship as one of the shallow ones he'd see fade away. See's himself *below* Riddle. Riddle has no idea how much Cater's hurting. I think it would be very hard on him.

Nothing Left to Loose: This is a big one for me. I've had this one in my head so much. I really want to do something with this scene even if I don't write the rest of the fic.

I've always envisioned it with Vil and Cater, Cater on the verge of Overblot, and Vil who's been through it before trying to talk him down.

Especially with the "Cass trust me becoming the villain isn't the answer." "That's what you think I am?" and the exchange with "Not like you, you lost your nerve, you lost the game, but you and I we're not the same, I'm not lost this fate was mine to choose"

There just seems to be power there and emotional potential.

Maybe I can polish it up and finally get it written when I finish one of my other long form fics, because I can almost guarantee this would be a very long one.

Today had not been Varian’s best day. He’d ruined his blueprint for upgrades for his hot water system, spilled chemicals all over his ham sandwich, and just now he slipped and fell on the freshly waxed floor, much to Old Lady Crowley’s annoyance.

“You ignorant child! Can’t you see I just waxed there?! Hmmph, they should have left you to rot in prison, boy.”

That last comment was the last straw. Varian stood up, mumbled an apology, and walked off before the old crone saw his tears.

He kept his head down and walked straight into Rapunzel and Eugene, who steadied him with his hands on his shoulders.

“Woah, Hairstripe, what’s the rush?”

The captain of the guards asked, noting Varian’s downcast look and sharing a worried look with his wife.

“N-no where. Excuse me.”

Varian mumbled, trying to dodge around the rulers of Corona.

Rapunzel stopped him with a gentle hand on his arm.

“Varian are you okay? You seem down.”

The Queen said, his emerald eyes filled with concern for her friend.

Varian plastered on a forced smile.

“I-I’m fine, Rapunzel, really! Just…. Just a rough day, y’know.”

His forced smile faltered and he rubbed his arm self consciously.

Rapunzel and Eugene shared a look. They knew exactly how to cheer their friend up.

“Well Goggles, it just so happens that Rapunzel and I have the perfect way to cheer you up!”

Eugene said, scooping Varian up under his arms from behind. Varian screeched in surprise, flailing around.

“Wha- Hey! Put me down, Eugene!”

“No can do, kid. Not until Rapunzel and I see you smiling again.”

Rapunzel grinned and walked over to Varian, who was still held in the air by Eugene. She wiggled her fingers in front of the boy playfully.

“Operation cheer up Varian is a-go!” She trilled, wiggling her fingers against Varian’s sides, eliciting a sharp squeal of laughter.

“WHAHAHAHA- RAHPUHUNZEHEL! NOHOHOHO!”

Varian writhed in Eugene’s grip, but he only succeeded in causing his shirt to ride up and expose his bare stomach, which Rapunzel instantly pounced on.

Adding to the playful torment, Eugene pressed his face against the side of Varian’s neck and blew raspberries, his scruffy goatee intensifying the sensation tenfold.

“AHAHAHAHAHA! LET ME GOHOHOHOHOO! PLEAHEHEHEASE!”

Varian begged, squirming in vain to escape the tickles.

“Nope! Laughter is the best medicine and as your queen and best friend, Eugene and I recommend a high dose!”

Rapunzel teased, pressing a finger inside Varian’s belly button and swirling it around, sending the poor alchemist into fits of belly laughter.

Between the tummy tickles from Rapunzel and the neck raspberries from Eugene, Varian was in absolute stitches. He kicked and flailed, but Eugene’s grip didn’t budge.

“OKAHAHAHAY! OKAHAHAHAY! I’M NOHOHOT SAHAD ANYMORE! PLEAHEAHEHEASE! STOHOHOHOP!”

“Hmmmm….. I don’t know, Eugene. Do you think he’s had enough?”

“Well, Sunshine, he can’t stop giggling, so perhaps just one more dose of tickles will suffice.”

Eugene and Rapunzel shared a teasing look before they launched a final tickle attack on poor Varian.

Eugene blew more raspberries onto Varian’s neck, while Rapunzel blew raspberries onto his tummy and dug her fingers into his sides and ribs.

Varian let out one final peal of shrieking laughter before descending into silent hiccups and wheezes.

Only then did Eugene release Varian from his hold and Rapunzel tugged his shirt back down, smoothing out the wrinkles in a sisterly fashion.

Varian was a breathless, giggling mess.

“Thahahanks guys.”

He wheezes out, sliding to the floor.

Rapunzel and Eugene smiled and wrapped the boy in a group hug.

It wasn’t long before the three of them were fast asleep in an impromptu cuddle pile, the smile never leaving Varian’s face.

Nesta took Eva’s advice really seriously, and she had been training hard to learn how to conjure and control her powers, Amren and Evanore helped her with all the knowledge both had about the cauldron and its powers. She was reading one of the books they found on the topic when Amren burst through the door, she was panting with a desperate gaze focused on Rhysand.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, everyone, getting ready to jump into action.

“Hybern soldiers surround Adriata, Varian told me so we can protect ourselves.” The tension in the room could be cut with a knife.

“We need to go and help, are the armies ready to go?” He asked Cassian who shook his head.

“I could get some ready, but we need to be fast.” While Rhys and Cassian planned, the rest was already getting ready for the battle, the Illyrian leathers Feyre had got for Y/N and Evanore fit them perfectly, Eva prepared her bow and Y/N got her weapons ready.

“I can winnow them and then go back to winnow the rest of the inner circle.” Rhys ran a hand through his hair, breathing frustrated.

“This won’t be fast enough.” Eva protested, standing in the doorway. “I can take Cass and teleport the troops while those who can winnow, take those who can’t, we will be there in no time.” Rhysand nodded and Eva took Cassian’s hand, teleporting them to the Illyrian camps.

In five minutes they were winnowing to the Summer Court. The sun and the smell of salt were the first things that filled Y/N’s senses, the beautiful city was chaotic, people ran around in panic, screams pierced the air, and the clear buildings were smudged with blood. They had appeared in a giant castle, where the guards tried to defend, fighting with the soldiers, a tall black male was in the middle, fighting against two soldiers, his head turned to their direction, and relief washed over his features as he recognized Rhysand’s inner circle.

“The Illyrians are on their way.” Feyre told him and the man nodded, finishing the two soldiers he was fighting with. The rest of them spread in different directions, fighting the soldiers they found along the way.

“Someone needs to go and defend the city.” Y/N said, looking at the bloodbath happening as people ran around. Morrigan ran to her side, grabbing her hand and winnowing them to the middle of the soldiers.

The two females went in opposite directions, helping those who couldn’t fight, killing the soldiers, again and again until their muscles burned. It didn't take much time for the skies to be filled with soldiers, descending upon Hybern’s soldiers, metal clashing against metal as they killed people.

Evanore appeared in the middle of the city, where she saw Y/N fighting alongside the Summer Court’s troops, her bow in her hands, aiming precisely for the enemy’s heads, the whistle of the arrow was loud amongst the screams, and they always found their way in between the eyes, where the helmets didn’t protect them.

The Hybern’s soldiers kept coming, it was like when they killed one, two more had already popped up in its place, Y/N kept cutting through them and taking their lives with her magic, the river of shadows around her deadly to those who dared to get too close.

But after one hour into the battle, her muscles burned and her magic started to fail, she focused on keeping her breathing even, and as the air filled her lungs, she felt her strength renewed as more soldiers appeared, her ears caught the sound from somewhere in her right, Evanore scream pierced the air, the sound too familiar to ignore.

Y/N turned in the direction of the sound, ready to run when she felt the sharp pain in her chest, two inches to the left and the sword would’ve pierced her heart, she choked on the blood that pooled in the back of her throat, the smell of ash filled her senses, their weapons covered in the substance.

She needed to get to Eva, but the blood kept flowing out of the wound, making it hard to focus, the buzz in her ears made her confused in which direction she should take, someone grabbed her braid, slamming her head on the wall, the blood ran warm in her face, and her head throbbed in pain.

Y/N grabbed the sword tighter, feeling her hands start to fail, and swung it up, cutting the hand that was still holding her, ready to smash her head again, the soldier screamed and she threw her head back, slamming it against the soldier, who stumbled backward, giving her space to conjure her magic and take his life away from him. Everything faded to black.

“They have ash on their weapons!” Cassian yelled from the skies, the Illyrians nodded in agreement, continuing to focus on the battle that still seemed far away from an end, shadows on the street caught his attention and he looked to where Y/N was fighting, she had a sword pierced on her chest and blood coming from a wound in her head as well, she killed the soldier before she passed out.

His wings flapped faster, taking him to where she was laying, the ash in her blood made him feel dizzy as he carried her to where he saw Evanore heading, he ran with her in his arms until he reached Tarquin’s castle.

“WE NEED HELP.” He screamed, Azriel was fighting there, his head turned in Cassian’s direction and he couldn’t breathe, Y/N’s body was hanging from Cassian’s arms, she was covered in blood and he felt his knees go weak as he could feel the bond in his chest start to get weak. His blood boiled and his power trembled with the thirst for revenge, he dropped his weapons, throwing his head back as he felt his body changing on its own.

Everybody stopped as they watched Azriel disappear in the shadows, huge feathered wings poked from the darkness, claws that scratched the marble floor, and a long tail, the darkness dissipated and a giant black griffon was standing there, the animal looked at Y/N one more time before he screamed, a pained scream as he walked outside.

His powerful wings carried him to the skies, he never felt so free, this form felt infinitely like he owned the world. He was so big that he almost covered all the sunlight as he flew, the Hybern soldiers looked at him, aiming their bows and foolishly trying to land an arrow on him, he held to the weak bond between them as he got down, claws cutting through the soldiers, his beak crushed bones as he bit into them, and his shadows moved inside him, begging to be released.

He allowed them to run freely around the world, where they touched, only bones and metal were left behind, as the toxic smoke corroded flesh and muscles, he smirked, all the suffering in the world still didn’t seem enough as he kept seeing her blood-covered body. He kept releasing his wrath upon Hybern’s soldiers, they tried to hide, but when he couldn’t get them, his shadows would.

“I’m going to remove the sword and you’re going to press the wound down okay?” Eva instructed Cassian, he was the one helping as the others were too busy looking at Azriel’s High Lord form.

“We need to stitch her up and wait for the ash to dissipate so she can start to heal.” He said and Eva looked at him, grabbing the handle of the sword, pulling it out, blood started to pour and he pressed it down.

“Dear Cassian..” She kneeled, putting his hands upon the wound, nodding that he could remove his hands, as her own started to glow. “Ash is just another element in nature, and my magic was gifted by it.” A black liquid started to pour from the wound instead of blood, the smell of ash almost made him faint. Y/N gasped for air as she opened her eyes, sitting straight, the wound on her forehead and in her chest starting to close. They helped her get up, and walk outside, where Azriel kept destroying soldiers, until nothing but a pile of bodies was left behind him.

“What the fuck is that?” She asked, eying the creature, the thing turned its head in her direction, and it flew to her, its claws made a funny noise as he approached her, the big hazel eyes told her everything she needed to know. Azriel approached until his feathered head was touching her chest, and he took a deep breath before he transformed back to normal.

He pulled her close, hugging her, feeling his heart go back to normal. “I thought I had lost you.” He whispered, resting his forehead against hers, she reached for his lips, closing the gap, it tasted like blood and mint but she couldn’t care less, his hands pressed her closer to his chest while he kissed her back, their lips fitting perfectly together, she hissed as she felt her healing wound throb in pain.

“I think we should head home and prepare for the meeting.” Feyre said and Tarquin nodded, Azriel held her hand tightly, and he was still holding it as they winnowed home.

I fully agree that Cass and Kiera would love the slasher films. Cass likes the more modern ones because quite a few of them have a feminist vibe, whereas Kiera likes the classics because 1) they’re cooler and 2) they were probably the ones Lance showed her first.

Lance and Rapunzel both like the less spooky and more vibey Halloween movies. Like you said, a lot of Tim Burton and Halloween specials. I think Raps would like Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride in particular. I think Lance likes Beetlejuice (in his opinion the musical is much better.) Rapunzel probably loves The Great Pumpkin Peanuts special and all the Phineas And Ferb Halloween specials.

I think Eugene probably also likes the classic slasher films. And like you said, Cat likes the classic Universal Monster films.

Quirin probably watches Halloween movies like the Universal Monster movies, along with some of my ultimate faves- Arsenic and Old Lace and I Married A Witch. Basically Quirin watches a lot of older Halloween movies and I think Varian ended up with those as his favorites. Tbh I don’t think Varian watches a lot of fictional things to scare himself (or at all.) When spooky season comes around, he watches things like Blameitonjorge, Nexpo, Nick Crowley, etc. True scary stories. He probably also loves the internet rabbit holes because they’re kind of like puzzles. (I’m really projecting onto him ngl but it fits okay!)

I feel like Hugo likes “bad” Halloween movies. Failures. Movies that fail so badly at being scary they’re funny. Think Velocipastor (please think about Velocipastor it’s the greatest movie in existence) but I can also see him enjoying Found Footage and along with Varian, “True” scary stories.

I think Hugo, Varian, and the girls watch obviously fake ghost hunting videos and make fun of them. They watch a lot of John Wolfe. I can also see Varigo + Eugene, Lance, and the girls really liking Buzzfeed Unsolved and Ghost/Mystery Files, along with Too Many Spirits. Which Varigo reenact at one point.

I think Lance, Eugene, and the girls watch the Conjuring series and other paranormal movies together. I can’t see Cass and Hugo enjoying them a whole lot, and Varian and Rapunzel are super afraid of them. I can see Varian and Rapunzel watching The Twilight Zone together. And also those Halloweentown movies on Disney (I’ve not seen them but they seem like Disney Channel fans) Varian, Raps, and Eugene watched the Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina but deemed it not nearly as good as the original sitcom. Eugene and Hugo hate-watch Twilight. Raps watches Halloween baking shows. Lance and Hugo like Rocky Horror Picture Show. Lance and Eugene like Young Frankenstein.

And finally, the Finnish harvest festival and original new years celebration is known as kekri (plus other dialectical varians of the same word). The word originates from the Proto-Indo-Iranian *ḱekrám (later*čakrám), meaning "wheel". I guess it makes sense, considering that people's view of time used to be cyclical instead of linear. A year is but another cycle in time. (The cycle of seasons meaning also exists in later Sanskrit descendants of the word.)

I had this scrapped virian AU from last year when I was still roleplaying and my friend told me to post it after I just showed them recently.

According to the google doc I wrote it in, it was called “Sacred Barrier”. So here’s that. It’s mostly just little notes and not so much a solid plot but you get it.

SACRED BARRIER.

— set in a time where witches (and the occult in general) were hated, hunted, and burned.

VIOLET.

— violet is a mysterious one. introverted, quiet, shy, and self isolates to ensure her secret is hidden well. in a world where the occult is antagonized, hunted, and executed, violet has powers. a descendant of the super humans before her. invisibility, and powerful telekinetic force fields.

— despite her fears of being seen as a witch, she often carelessly uses her invisibility, with the assumption that no one would see her. she’s gotten comfortable with assuming that she’s well hidden in the shadows.

— violet has a goal, which is to find out anything she can about her occult background. of course, the academy’s library would have some books about them, but she refuses to accept that her kind have only ever been “evil”. she believes that the world turned the tables against them somehow, that humans are hiding the real story. (don’t ask me what “the real story” is rn lmao).

— violet has a bit of a vendetta against humans for the above reason.

— piggyback: violet believes some of her kind might still be out there, but the chances slim. still she hopes.

— like Hermione, she was raised by mortals, humans, muggles even, you get it. bonus points if they’re witch-hunters!

— she always got the notion that /someone/ was watching her, or somehow knew about her secrets. but she assumes it’s just paranoia.

— might give her other powers for this au. to keep it interesting, and for funsies. but idk

alternative idea, might not be used: if i don’t give her more powers, maybe there were different kinds of witches. and because she has force fields, maybe she’s a witch of protection, given not even lava could get through her barriers. but i might give her other powers anyway idk yet

— completely random but definitely plays the violin or viola. probably plays in an empty hallways so it’ll echo.

VARIAN.

• varian is an outcast himself, spends a lot of his time in the academy’s laboratory. the lab is reserved especially for him at a certain time of the day, on account that he was recommended for his grades, unique talent, and level of skill on the subject for his age. no, that unfortunately doesn’t make him a highly respected figure. if anything, he’s disliked for being too privileged, favored, or a kiss-ass. of course, he does have to leave the lab at some point, as it is used by other students during the day.

• while most don’t take notice to violet’s existence, considering she’s invisible half the time, varian has. and made note of apparently seeing her “vanish” from time to time. he suspects she has inhuman abilities, but isn’t 100% sure due to his lack of sleep.

• varian doesn’t antagonize witches like most of the population seems to. he’s very interested in the occult, and envies those who lived before him, as they got to live amongst an abundance of witches in their time. to his dismay, their kind were burned at the stake. the possibility of violet being the very thing he yearns to look into, motivates him to study her from afar to be sure of himself.

• alternative: varian /does/ antagonize witches, much like most of the population. after his first time witnessing violet vanish entirely, he was keen on keeping an eye on her to confirm his theories. as well as possibly discover what other abilities she has.

• setting aside, or adding onto varian’s curiosity about the occult; varian has always been curious about the streak in his hair that he was born with, as well as the sudden disappearance of his mother. after seeing violet’s alleged powers, he wonders if she could somehow be connected, somehow be a piece he’d been missing. witches seemed to have been erased from the world, and as far as he knows, violet is the only one left. (he is most likely a witch/wizard himself).

• let’s say violet manages to touch the streak in varian’s hair. it’d be kinda cool if that triggered something. maybe something useful to them, maybe not. either they see something or even just hear something, voices most likely, voices from the past.

• new thought: if varian used to be a skeptic, and didn’t even believe in the existence of witches.

okay so i kinda have no idea what to do from here so im gonna post my first draft (mostly written at 3am) and you guys tell me if the plot is good and the plot holes I need to fix and also a name for the AU because i just found out people name their AUs and i can't just call mine "my tangled au" forever yk

a world where only eugene, rapunzel and her parents know about her powers and everyone else thinks her hair just turned brown as she aged and there was nothing special about her rapidly growing blonde hair as a baby. cassandra never takes her to the rocks and her hair never grows back and she lives her life normally, apart from having to adapt to a new world and dealing with trauma from being in the tower

moon is eugene's lost sister and her mom died birthing her. she absorved all of the moonstone's powers because her mom was around it so much and now the moonstone is almost harmless because moon carries almost all the power, that's why she has the ability to recite the spell

king edmund sent everyone away and stayed in the kingdom taking care of moon after finding out about her powers, scared that she would harm someone, but as she grew up, she questioned why she was stuck in an empty castle with her dad, why she couldn't explore the world, but the king only told her it was too dangerous (the only thing he didnt tell her was that it wasnt the world that was dangerous for her, it was the opposite) so one day when she was 15 she found a scroll in her father's bedroom and she saw that there was a drawing of the moonstone- the same stone that is in the center room of the castle that her father doesn't let her enter- and a lot of symbols that she couldn't decipher so she found a way to run out of the castle at night and find out the truth about that stone and why her father kept her there. after walking for days she finally found a village with people so she went up to the first person she saw for answers, and she showed a nice old woman the scroll and asked if she knew what it meant and she smiled and took her into her home. she figured what it said very quickly and asked moon to read the decay incantation, to which she only smiled as the little girl was possessed by moon magic, unable to stop reciting the spell. "you own the moonstone, don't you?" the old woman asked her, to which she responded explaining where she came from and that the moonstone is locked up, so she took the woman back to the kingdom after she manipulated moon into thinking she needed the moonstone, only to try to steal it at the last second. fortunately, king edmund saw the old woman (an old spirit and follower of zhan tiri) and stopped her forever. he then decided that moon wasn't even safe stuck in the dark kingdom and did a spell to wipe all of her memories and made the crows take her somewhere she could live a new and anonymous life, hopefully being saved by a kind family. the only thing he didn't know was that she sent the girl still with the demanitus scroll in her pocket to varian's house in old corona

varian also has some moonstone power but not enough to kill people like moon, in his maximum capacity he would only be able to put someone in a coma, but that would take a lot of his energy. his mom is a descendent of demanitus and she met quirin through studying the magic of the sundrop and moonstone, and they were around the moonstone a lot, but not as much as the queen, so that's why varian has magic but a lot less than moon

varian never believed that rapunzel was magically brought back with different hair and the person who kidnapped him just died. he knew that woman must've had a reason to kidnap the princess and keep her hidden for 18 years, why doesn't the rest of the kingdom know the reason? the queen drank tea from a magic healing flower that cured her deathly disease and rapunzel was born with long hair the same color as the flower, then she was kidnapped and came back with the opposite- short brown hair- and those facts have nothing to do with each other? so when that mysterious girl showed up at his doorstep with a scroll about that same flower, he knew it was a sign for him to investigate
