#vanya gets to save the world by herself

hi i've been in my feels a little bit since vanya posted the family pics and i just need to share it with someone. i am very much following all the competition updates and polls and rankings and techical elements and sport mumbo jumbo, but that's not what i'm in the mood to talk about. i need to rant about mushy emotional things.
i don't know, i just feel like this partnership/friendship/whatevership that b&v have has helped them so much in growing into good grown people and we're still only at the start of it. i can see it in vanya specifically. over the course of this last year he's becoming softer and more relaxed in his own skin and his new life. you can tell that this place bella lead him to has allowed him to be more carefree than he was before. which is especially important considering he lost his parents so young and had to leave his home to escape war. all people he knew before coming to the us, sadly including his brother, he has to chase around the world to actually be with them in real life. places he considered important to him he won't be able to see for years. i can't imagine not being able to see my family home or visit my family cemetary. those are very emotionally difficult things to deal with at such a young age and of course i'm just a spectator on the internet, but i feel like this place he managed to find half way across the world is safe and caring. and he found it by meeting the world's sweetest girl. a girl that believes in herself in spite of the odds and loves people very openly. she is fucking lightning in a bottle and her smile could power cities!!! people like that are rare to find and that girl is his partner. her energy and light make it so easy to forget how hard life can be. it's such an admirable quality of character. it's why people connect to her and her videos, she's welcoming and she radiates warmth and joy. she spreads it wherever she goes. i just find all of that so very moving. there's something so vulnerable and human in their circumstances. because if you really dissect it, them becoming partners saved her career and his life. they found each other by chance, managed to understand each other beyond language barriers and chose to do this thing they love more than anything else together. he repaired the trust her ex-partner broke. he never lets her doubt herself and always tries to catch her when she falls. she gives him peace and space to be childish and silly, even if it's at her expense. again i'm just a spectator, but i think he makes her bolder and she makes him softer. whatever they may be to each other, there's no doubt that they truly enjoy one another. i think that's the exact thing people get so attached to beyond the whole will-they-won't-they booktok fantasy. they make each other grow and you can feel it!!
sorry for waxing poetic about random athletes we found on the internet hahaha. there's just something very "mortifying ordeal of being known" about them, you know? kinda makes me slightly believe that the right circumstances will just find you when you least expect them.
My first instinct was to kinda deflect and say they're in their 'character development era' but honestly this is just such a beautiful message you sent here. I just wanna let it see the light of day (hope you don't mind) because I'm sure others have felt the same about B&V. I know I have.
It's part of what makes their chemistry to interesting to watch. Here are two people who have found themselves in the same place (for a second time), both of them with a dream of success, both of them going through a big change, adjusting to a new reality and still managing to make each other better people in the process. It's a beautiful story, even from the outside looking in 🤍
#i do not condone writing fanfiction about B&V (if you do i have no real way of stopping you ofc) but their story is so 🥹#since i found them I've been thinking it'd make for a great book or show#asks#flores/desyatov#isabella flores#ivan desyatov

Back in 1942, the trio of McGonagall, Pomfrey and Hooch first walked the corridors together, forging friendships that would last for all their lives. Faced with misfired curses, dragon pox, Quidditch-related mayhem and Slytherin's monster, they'll need all of Minerva's quick intelligence, Poppy's incredible knowledge, and Rolanda's reckless daring to get them through their school years in one piece.

Diego and Vanya had gone for supplies. Klaus had declared himself in need of modern-day takeout, Allison following him hastily when everyone expressed concern over what Klaus’ idea of a gourmet meal might entail. Luther volunteered to be the first to brave the shower. Five, on the other hand, had been bundled into an armchair the second they all fell into the motel room and forbidden from moving on pain of rumours.

For the first couple of days, Heather slept nearly constantly. Apparently that was something normal and to be expected, but Veronica couldn’t help but keep glancing over her shoulder while she tried to do homework. She looked so small in her sleep. Umbrella Academy Masterlist
warnings: blood but not really
word count: 3237
The building shook. Debris was falling everywhere leaving nearly no clear path. Memories flooded through her brain clouding any possibility for judgement. Vanya stormed through the Academy destroying everything in her path.
She had been betrayed by her family. By everyone she ever loved. She had given everything and gotten nothing. That ended now.
Vanya Hargreeves was now her own person. She left the Academy not looking back as everything was falling apart behind her.
Vanya had her concert to attend.
Klaus and Diego ran through the trembling halls looking for Grace and Pogo. Diego carried a still unconscious Nailah in his arms. Suddenly the ceiling started to collapse making both Diego and Klaus collapse on the ground. Klaus was the first to regain consciousness and tried to shake Diego awake but to no use.
Klaus saw the ceiling about to collapse and used the last of his strength to try and push both his siblings out of the way. In the last moment Ben grabbed Diego's legs and pulled him away while Klaus pushed Nailah.
"Holy shit.", Klaus. said looking at Ben in awe.
Diego groaned in pain and got up, grabbing Nailah's body again and Klaus helped him carry all of them outside.
"You okay?", Klaus asked concerned as soon as they let themselves breathe again feeling the cold night air.
Diego grabbed Klaus' face in relief:"You saved my life, man."
Klaus looked at him slightly disturbed and grabbed Nailah slinging her arm over his shoulder:"Yeah, okay, let's go."
"Shit, mom. Mom!", Diego began screaming when he saw Grace in the window.
Both started to shout at her to go down and save herself but the robotic mother just smiled at them sadly and blew them a goodbye kiss before disappearing in the collapsing debris.
Diego was throwing around parts of the broken house screaming for Grace.
"Diego. She's gone, okay? She's gone.", Klaus said softly to Diego carefully pulling him up from the ground.
"Guys.", Five shouted walking through the broken walls.
"What's up with her?", he asked seeing Nailah still unconscious.
"She disagreed with Luther about freeing Vanya.", Klaus said stroking Nailah's curls away from her face.
Five scoffed: "So you thought the way to go was to knock her out? You do realise she's gonna burn you for it?"
"It was the right thing to do.", Luther defended himself.
Five sighed and lifted Nailah's chin examining her face. Without further hesitation he slapped her across the face earning an angry look from Allison. But it worked. Nailah opened her eyes in confusion looking around. "How long was I out to miss this?"
"Irrelevant. We need to get going.", Five said.
"What about Pogo?", Diego asked.
"He didn't make it.", Luther said sadly.
"What?", Nailah breathed.
"Vanya killed him.", Luther sighed and Nailah gasped in horror.
"No, Vanya wouldn't...", Diego began.
"No, I saw it.", Luther interrupted. "Just before we got out."
"Mom. Now Pogo.", Diego muttered.
Nailah was biting her nails nervously: "I'm gonna kill that bitch."
"Guys! This is it. The apocalypse is still on. The world is ending today.", Five shouted interrupting everyone.
"I thought you said it was over.", Luther said confused.
"I was wrong, okay. This. newspaper. I found it in the future the day I got stuck. The headline hasn't changed.", Five explained feverishly.
"But that doesn't mean anything. Time could've been altered since that newspaper came out this morning.", Diego intercepted.
"You're not listening to me. When I found it, I assumed this place came down along with everything else. But here we are. The moon's still shining, the earth's still in one piece, but not the academy.", Five sighed.
Klaus ripped the newspaper from Five's hands: "I'm confused."
"Then listen to me, you idiot! Vanya destroys the Academy before the apocalypse. I thought Harold Jenkins was the cause but he was just the fuse.", Five explained.
"And that would make Vanya the bomb.", Nailah finished.
"Precisely. Vanya causes the apocalypse. We have to find her.", before anyone could respond to Five, helicopters began whirring above the ruins of the academy.
Diego and Five cursed.
"Regroup at the superstar. Go!", Five ordered and everyone scattered away in different directions.
At the Superstar Lanes Bowling the tensions were high.
"Look, I hate to be the one to say this, but everyone needs to prepare.", Luther announced.
"For what?", Diego asked.
"To do whatever it takes to stop Vanya.", Allison hit Luther in response to that. "We may not have a choice, Allison.", Luther sighed.
"Bullshit. There's always options.", Diego intercepted.
"That's true. Vanya had one and she chose to kill Pogo. That's a choice.", Nailah said. "Besides, what other option do we have?", she asked.
Diego sighed: "I don't know." Nailah scoffed.
"Look, whatever we decide, we need to find Vanya. And fast at that. She could be anywhere.", Luther stood up.
"Or... here. Look at this.", Klaus held up the newspaper.
"That's right. Her concert is tonight.", Diego murmured.
"Hello. I hate to intrude but my manager says if you're not gonna bowl, you gotta leave.", a worker said and the manager slammed bowling shoes on the counter from a distance.
Nailah let her eyes glow and Luther picked up a bowling ball and threw it on the lanes, scoring a strike.
SHE'S OUR SISTER. Appeared on Allison's notebook.
"She killed Pogo.", Nailah countered. "We're the only ones capable of stopping this. We have a responsibility to dad.", Luther tried to reason.
"To dad? No, I've heard enough about...", Diego got angry.
"He sacrificed everything to bring us back together.", Luther interrupted.
"I'm with Luther on this one. We can't give her a chance to fight back. There are. billions of lives at stake. We're past trying to save just one. Or avenge just one, for that matter.", Five. directed the last part at Nailah who just scoffed at him.
"Hey, you know guys, maybe I could help.", Klaus proposed.
"Now's not the time.", Luther sighed annoyed.
"No. Let him finish. He saved mine and Nailah's life today.", Diego intercepted.
"Really?", Nailah asked confused.
"Is that true?", Luther looked at Klaus sceptically.
"Yeah, I did take credit for it. In fact the real hero, was Ben.", Klaus admitted. Everyone looked at him sceptically.
"Listen, just. Today, he punched me in the face. And earlier at the house he was the one who said Diego's life, not me.", Klaus insisted.
"You are unbelievable, Klaus.", Luther scoffed and Allison rolled her eyes.
"You want proof, is that it?", Klaus asked. "All right. I'll give you proof.", he announced and picked up a bowling ball. He threw it in the air as if he was throwing it to someone but the ball landed as expected on the ground.
"Is there any way to silence that voice in your head that screams out to be the centre of attention?", Luther asked sarcastically.
"You know, I like you a whole lot better before you got laid.", Klaus snapped back. Allison's head jerked forward and a angry expression painted itself on her face.
Klaus realised what he had said and tried to save himself and Luther: "Which was a complete... which wasn't his fault 'cause he was completely high, right? And... and the girl she though he was a furry..."
"Stop!"
"Okay."
Allison grabbed her notebook and left the group with a very annoyed expression. "Allison, wait!", Luther followed her.
"Excuse me! Today's my son Kenny's birthday and wouldn't your kids be happier spending time with kids their age?", a strange woman dragged along her son. Five and Nailah looked at themselves they did look young but they didn't think they. could. be mistaken for fifteen.
"Assuming it's okay with your two dads.", the lady added. Everyone looked at each other shocked.
Five hummed annoyed: "I would rather chew my own foot."
Nailah snickered: "What he said."
The lady walked away with her son, clearly disturbed. Five heard something and went in the other direction.
"If I was going to date a man you'd be the last man I would date.", Diego said.
"You'd be lucky to get me."
"Alright, where's Five?", Luther asked.
"He left.", Diego answered.
"For the love of... Where'd he go?"
"Didn't tell us.", Nailah said.
"Well, we're not waiting around for him. The concert starts in 30 minutes."
"Alright, so what's the plan?", Diego asked.
Luther began stuttering. "What? Is that all you got? Look, you wanna be Number One, fine, but you're gonna have to get us on the same page, because right now we're all over the place. Five's gone, Klaus is tuning insane, Nailah is this close to committing an actual murder and Allison wants to stop all of this without her powers.", Diego angrily said.
"You're right. We need a plan.", Luther agreed.
But before they could come up with anything, masked snipers invaded the bowling lanes. The siblings rushed to hind behind the counters.
"Who the hell are these guys?", Luther asked.
"Maybe they're here for Kenny's birthday.", Klaus said earning an annoyed glanced from Nailah.
"No, I'm pretty sure they're here for us.", Luther said peeking above the counter.
Diego let a knife fly towards the attackers and immediately killed one. They fall caused the lights to stick onto disco mode.
Luther used the second confusion and darkness to grab a bowling ball and throw it at another shooter, killing him as well. Luther kept throwing bowling balls like a cannon knocking over one shooter after the other. Nailah joined, shooting fireballs out of her hands blinding and confusing the attackers. Klaus crawled towards Kenny's birthdaycake and threw it at the shooters as well, while Diego kept attacking with his manipulated knifes.
"They're blocking the exit!", Klaus informed through the noise.
"So what's the plan now, Luther?", Diego asked throwing another knife.
Allison pointed at the lanes. "The lanes! Let's go!", Luther shouted and everyone began running towards the bowling pins.
Klaus, Luther, Nailah, Allison and Diego slid not very gracefully through the holes and immediately ran away through the back exit.
Arriving at the Icarus theater where Vanya was already playing Luther didn't want Allison to go talk to Vanya alone. Allison looked at him intently.
"Okay." , Luther gave in and Allison disappeared in the audience.
"You're using her as a distraction, aren't you?", Diego asked.
"Our best chance to incapacitate Vanya.", Luther confirmed.
"Who are you what have you done to our Number One?", Nailah asked eying Luther from head to toe.
"So what's the plan?", Klaus asked.
"Diego, you're with me. You two, wait out front.", Luther ordered.
"What, why?", Klaus asked.
"You're the lookout and you don't have yourself under control.", Luther explained.
"The lookout?", Klaus asked confused. "Not under control?", Nailah groaned. But before they could protest Diego and Luther were already gone.
"Wanna get a burrito?", Klaus asked.
"Always."
In the stage room Vanya was playing first chair. Allison walked up to the stage mesmerised by her sister's talent. In the backstage area Luther and Diego were preparing themselves for an attack. Vanya spotted Allison in the crowd and smiled at her.
Allison felt a flicker of hope simmer inside of her.
Luther and Diego ran on stage in an attempt to catch Vanya. She only let the bow fly on the violin strings, sending an energy wave out. Diego and Luther were thrown back.
The audience began running out of the theater in panic. Vanya kept playing.
In horror, the back players wanted to escape as well but Vanya send another energy wave in their direction, making them sit back down and keep playing. Vanya stepped to the end of the stage with a determined look on her face.
"She's stronger than expected.", Luther muttered taking cover behind the chairs next to Diego. A bag hit his head. He saw Allison sending him a venomous look.
"Yeah, we're fine, thanks for asking.", he said sarcastically. "Look, I almost lost you once. I wasn't about to lose this again."
Allison's angry expression didn't change.
"Well, so much for the element of surprise. What else you got?", Diego asked. Allison motioned a violin. "No shit, Allison. Tell us something we don't already know.", Diego scoffed.
"She's talking about the violin. It's her lightning rod. If we can take it from her and stop her from playing we have a shot.", Luther said proud of Allison's idea.
At that moment the same masked shooters from the bowling alley infiltrated the theater. The musicians had enough. In fear they ran out of the theatre. Vanya only kept playing even more vividly.
"What the hell happened to Nailah and Klaus? They were supposed to be on lookout.", Diego said taking cover.
"Yeah, you're surprised?", Luther shouted.
"What's with all the lollygagging?", Five asked blitzing into the theatre.
"Five, get down!", Luther screamed. Gasping in surprise, Five quickly took cover in between audience chairs.
"I thought you bailed on us!", Luther shouted in an accusing tone.
"I had an errand to run. This is not good.", Five dismissed him scanning the room in the search for a way out.
"You know these guys?", Diego asked.
"Yeah, I do."
Diego sighed annoyed: "And?"
"Well... we're screwed.", Five announced spotting even more flooding the room.
Diego quickly threw his knives hitting most of the shooters right in the chest.
"Guys! It's Cha-Cha!", Klaus came running inside with Nailah right behind him.
"Klaus, Nailah, get down!", Luther yelled at them.
Klaus immediately listened and took cover in between the audience chairs but Nailah wasn't near enough. As fast as she could, Nailah caught the bullets flying her way in a fiery shield.
Five immediately blitzed on the back of a shooter making him swirl around and shoot his accomplices, giving Nailah a chance to take cover as well.
Klaus' fists started to glow in a piercing blue. The light began to form a shape and soon materialised into Ben. Yelling, Klaus let Ben expose his stomach and huge tentacles escaped his body. The libs grabbed the shooters, killing them with ease. The siblings stared in awe unable to find a reaction.
On the stage, a bloody Cha-Cha appeared. Diego immediately sprinted towards her, fighting her into. the backstage area.
Finally Klaus let Ben go back to the ghost realm. "Now, who's the lookout.", he grinned.
Vanya kept playing her violin. The energy coming from the music started to turn the violin and Vanya's clothes white as snow, nearly transparent. A rumble went through the theatre as a response to Vanya's immense power.
"Oh, welcome back. Where were you?", Luther asked seeing Diego in a light jog joining the rest of the siblings.
"Honouring a memory. So how do we wanna end this thing?"
"We surround her. Alright? We come at her from all angles.", Luther said.
"And kill her?", Nailah asked.
"No. Focus.", Luther said.
"So it's a suicide mission?", Klaus recapped.
"Yes, but one of us could get through. It's the only chance we've got. Are we all in?", Five said.
Everyone besides Allison confirmed. Diego and Nailah were to go stage left, Luther stage right and Klaus and Five from the front. The siblings scattered away.
Vanya's body began glowing not only from the contrast of the white clothing but from within. Debris started falling down from the ceiling.
On Luther's signal the siblings attacked with Vanya. They didn't even get close to her before she slashed her bow, binding them to her power.
Vanya stood there, her body and eyes glowing, her power sucking at the life of her siblings. Behind her, Allison pointed a gun at her head with tears in her eyes.
Allison looked at Vanya's small statue, then at her siblings losing their life energy, then back at Vanya.
Silent tears were streaming down Allison's face.
Allison took a step froward. Then another. Before the gun could touch the back of Vanya's head she placed it next to her ear and shot.
The noise disturbed Vanya's harmony and she collapsed lifelessly on the stage. Her power disconnected from her siblings.
Instead, a light blast was shot into space.
Allison caught Vanya and to her relief she was still alive. The siblings gathered around them.
"We did it. We saved the world.", Luther sighed happily.
"Guys?", Klaus interrupted the happy moment. "You see that big moon rock coming towards us?"
"Shit. That's not good.", Nailah commented.
"So this is it, huh? So much for saving the world.", Klaus scratched his chest in resignation.
"If only Sir Reginald could see us now. The Umbrella Academy. A total failure.", Diego scoffed with a slight satisfaction in his voice.
"This doesn't have to end.", Five said.
"What are you saying, Five?", Nailah asked from the ground.
"I think I have a way outta here. But you gotta trust me on this.", Five announced.
"Nope.", Klaus said."No, I don't think so.", Luther added. "Definitely not.", Nailah scoffed. "Never.", Diego finished.
"Well then we might swell accept our fate, because in less than a minute we're gonna be vaporised."
"What's your idea then?", Diego asked.
"We use my ability to time travel. But this time, I'll take you with me.", Five proposed.
"You can do that?"
"I don't know. I've never tried it before."
"What's the worst that can happen?", Diego asked.
"You're looking at it. A 58-year old in the body of a 18-years old."
"Okay, we're in.", Luther agreed.
The siblings stood in a circle holding each other's hands. Five closed his eyes and concentrated. This had to work. A blue light appeared above them. Electricity began whirring and their bodies began to itch.
Five looked at his siblings. In the time-light they seemed so young, almost as young as when he had accidentally left them. All of them were looking at the blue light with worry and expectations. All but one. Nailah was looking straight at Five with no fear or worry in her eyes. She trusted him completely.
The blue light sallowed them whole and the last thing Five saw before the world went into darkness was Nailah's encouraging smile.

Hello everyone. Season 1 is done and so is the first part of this fan fiction. I really hope you're enjoying it this far and I would be very happy for any feedback. Do you like Nailah? Do you think she is integrated well into the story? Is there a character that I should focus on more?
I'm alway happy to hear your thoughts. Thank you for reading and I hope you'll keep doing so.

🌻 If I may just request something lighter. I nee that right now.
a “happy ending, the team wins and life is made easier for them” au coming right up ;3c
bear with me for some less light content though bc it is the umbrella academy and there’s a lot of. u know. child soldiers and death. but i will try!! bear with me, starts off less light and ends much lighter I promise
so maybe not light but on god it’s going to end soft
---
When Five is seven, he walks into a room and makes a face. His siblings, who are loudly arguing, don’t notice. It’s just One and Two, going at one anothers throats for the eleventh time that one.
(It should be noted that’s it’s only the fifth of the month. So really not surprising in the slightest.)
And then Five tilts his head, and very purposefully steps backwards, and a few seconds later a knife embeds itself in the wall a few inches from Five’s face.
“You almost hit Five!” One roars, pointing accusingly.
“I wouldn’t have.” Two scowls.
Except he did.
The next day, Five looks up from his homework and frowns at Six. He’d rather ask Six alone, and Four is present, but this is the best opportunity he’s going to get to ask anything without Dad finding out or having to deal with, ugh, One.
“Hey Six?” Five asks, getting a quiet ‘hmm’ in return as Six looks up, “You ever have a dream that comes true?”
Before Six can get out a word, Four rolls over from where he’s taken his book and sprawled out on the floor with it since he can’t sit still in a chair longer than four seconds. “I thinks that’s called deja vu, dude.”
Six nods, “The feeling something has happened before, sure. Plus, if you’re stressed out about something you might dream about it. You having dreams, Five?”
Five shrugs, thoughtful. If there’s a name for the experience, then it’s something that happens to everybody and isn’t something to worry about.
“No,” He says, “I’m fine. Thanks.”
---
When Five is ten, he refuses to follow One’s - Luther’s - plan for the first time in a real life situation.
“No.” Five says, firmly, “That plan is going to get someone killed.”
“It’s a good plan.” Luther says, equally firm and just the slightest bit irritated. Being in Luther’s favor actually counts for more than he might know, and being out of it... Reginald listens to Luther in a way that he doesn’t for the rest of them.
So Five toes the line, but usually doesn’t give the boy a reason to actually complain about him. So he grouches and snipes and snarks but usually follows the plan, if with some... embellishment. He doesn’t usually disobey outright.
“I’m not doing it.” Five says, and the team is quiet to the side. Five has always been headstrong, but this head on collision is not his style.
“Yes.” Luther says, anger twisting his face into something ugly, “You are.”
And then their illustrious leader beckons for them to go, and it’s Allison who flounces off first to her position followed by a stalking Diego. Ben gives Five a hesitant look, but goes ahead without saying anything. Ben has never been a fan of conflict.
Five stares at Luther, and Luther’s eyes narrow, and Five thinks fine, he thinks, I’ll do it myself. And he jumps away.
And when things fall apart and go to shit, Five is there yanking on a skinny arm and a bullet whizzes by and Five cover Klaus’s body with his own as he shoves them both under a desk. A few minutes later, knives appear out of thin air and Five pries them out. He doesn’t even realize until they’re all looking at him, horrified, that he’s been shot. Not until he touches his fingers to his shoulder and feels the red against his fingers.
“Oh.” Five says, frowning, and then he looks at a pale faced Luther. “I told you your plan was shit.”
That’s the last thing he remembers, until he wakes up in bed feeling fuzzy with his shoulder patched and bandaged and Mom right there helping him sit up and sip from a glass.
That’s the first time Five realizes that what he does can be dangerous.
---
The thing is, it starts off incredibly simple. Harmless.
When Five dreams, his dreams are... strange. He dreams of simple things, little things. An argument that will happen. What dinner will be. That Ben is going to leave his book in the little storage room by the dumb stature of an elephant that looks more more like a bulldog with a snake attached to its face.
The thing is, he believes Klaus at first. That it’s harmless. Except it becomes less fuzzy and less a feeling that something will happen, and becomes something sharper. Something more than deja vu.
He thinks about telling his father, because he’s angry with Luther and craves recognition and discovering something new about their powers is a surefire way to get Dad’s undivided attention.
(When Diego discovered he could hold his breath for an alarming amount of time, the rest of the family didn’t see him for a week.)
That’s the first night he wakes up with cut off screams in his throat, and the knowledge that his father is a ruthless, tricky man. And very very inventive.
(He does not tell his father about his power development. He doesn’t tell anyone, actually.
He loves his siblings, but he doesn’t trust them. Information, in this household, is power. A bargaining chip. He loves his siblings, but Reginald is clever and he is cruel and any one of them would betray the others if it hurt enough.)
As he grows older, his dreams become more vivid. And they stop just being about the next day.
He saves Klaus’s life from a bad plan, but he learns a lesson. If he changes what his dreams show him, he doesn’t know what will happen next. He saved Klaus, but got shot himself.
He gets a choice, between having absolute certainty, and changing the future. It means that Five rarely acts on his dreams. Not unless he has to. And after that awful, awful mission, Five also learns to be more subtle.
Especially after a bedbound interrogation by his father, that Five barely manages to spin into it just being a challenging brat, and things just happening to go down badly was a coincidence that Five will hold over Luther’s head for the rest of time.
And Five is a challenging brat at the best of time, and so Reginald believes him, but he learns to be more subtle.
So Five... nudges things. When he absolutely has to. And the rest of the time he bites his own tongue and stomps on his own fury and grits his teeth. He does what he can, when it can’t be traced back to him.
(Klaus goes into the mausoleum, and he wraps his arms around himself in a terrified hug, and his hand bumps something in his pocket. A little flashlight. Klaus thinks for a moment about how it could have gotten there, and decides not to look a gift horse in the mouth. It’s still terrible, but it’s more bearable with a little bit of light.)
---
Five is twelve when he starts dreaming about the end of the world. He also discovers an entirely new aspect to his power.
When Five sleeps, he dreams of time travel. He dreams of the fizzle of time itself against his palms, how exhilarating it is. Time itself at his command, no, not command. Time itself cradling him in its infinite grasp. It’s not like jumping through space. Time is, it’s so big. And it loves him. He doesn’t know how he knows, but he does. Time loves him, and he loves it.
He wants to travel, he wants it desperately. But he knows what will happen if he does. He knows, he sees, he dreams over weeks, over months, lives an entire life in eight hour increments.
And in this life, Five learned his lesson early. You don’t tell Reginald Hargreeves about new developments in your power unless you’re willing to go through his private training in order to train it.
Five doesn’t mention anything about time travel, to anyone.
Five is thirteen-years-old and two-months and he misses the day he was supposed to time travel on. And he wakes up sweating and dizzy and dying.
(Five Hargreeves is time’s child. Time loves him, but he needs time in a way he never realized. he made a change. It’s too big of a change.)
Five wipes his face, splashes some cold water, and gets to work.
The first thing he does, is go into Vanya’s room and sit her down.
“Are you okay?” She whispers. She’s always been so quiet, like a mouse tiptoeing around in a house full of cats. And Five regrets, for just a moment, not telling her sooner that she’s always been a cat as well.
“I need to tell you something.” Five whispers back, determination making him sit up straight. “And I need you to not be angry.”
“Why would I be angry?” Vanya asks, tilting her head and looking confused.
“Because I kept a secret from you.” Five whispers.
Vanya just gives him the most puzzled look, “What secret? Why?”
“Because information is power, Vanya.” Five tells her, reaching out and taking her hand in his own, “Because I love you, I love you all. But I don’t know what’s going to happen, only what could happen. What cannot happen.”
“Five you aren’t making any sense.” She reaches up to feel his forehead, snapping her hand back to her side, “You’re burning up! Five!”
Five smiles at her, “I keep so many secrets, Vanya. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m going to change the world, and you’re the only one I can trust to help me, okay?”
“Five... I don’t understand.” Vanya says, helpless.
“You will.” Five says, his smile turning just a little watery, “Promise me something though. Promise me you won’t hate me. Won’t hate any of us.”
“What are you talking about.”
Five shakes her hand, “We were so little Vanya. We didn’t know. Allison didn’t know. The only person to blame for this is Dad, because he did something terrible, Van. Something awful. He made us all do something terrible.”
“Five...”
“Promise me Vanya.” Five demands, shaking his head. “Promise me, promise me you won’t hate us. If you have to hate someone, hate dad. But promise me.”
“I - I promise.” Vanya stutters, confused.
“Haven’t you ever wondered why you’re the only child that didn’t develop powers?” Five asks gently, “Haven’t you ever wondered why, if you don’t have powers, Dad kept you? You know him. We all know him. He’s a practical man. If you’re of no use to him...”
“...He would throw me away.” Vanya finishes, her voice a mere whisper. “But he did. He did keep me, so - so he must think I have potential, right?”
“He knows you have potential, Vanya.” Five’s voice is soft, gentle, in a way it never is. “He knows, because he took it away from you.”
“What - Five?”
Five gives Vanya’s hand another little shake. “How long have you taken your anxiety meds, Van?”
“My what?” She pulls her hand out of his, drawing it up to her chest, “I - I don’t know. A long time.”
“Since we were four, Van.” Five tucks his empty hands into his lap, hiding the trembling of his fingers, “Do you know what else happened when we were four? We started getting our powers, remember?”
“Speak plainly, Five.” Vanya’s hands are trembling as well, but not for the same reason.
“He stole it from you, Van.” Five whispers, “You were four. You didn’t realize how dangerous you were. You didn’t understand, you were so little. So he took them, and then he never gave them back.”
Vanya’s eyes are wet, and she brings a trembling hand to her mouth, “No.”
“He told Allison to make you forget.” He grips the fabric of his shorts as a shudder ripples through him, “She was four. How could she say no? He made all of us forget, and then how could we know to tell you?”
Vanya is openly crying, a hand over her mouth to stifle her sobs because everyone in the manor knows how dangerous crying can be. How dangerous the wrong kind of attention can be. “Then how do you know, Five.” She manages to get out, “How do you know.”
Five offers her a watery smile, “Because I keep secrets, Vanya. My powers, they’re not. They’re not what everyone thinks. I know things, because when I close my eyes at night I see things.”
That makes Vanya stop crying, just for a moment out of sheer confusion. “What?”
“I’ve known about you for a year. I know so many things. A lifetime of things. But none of that matters, because this, right here, right now? Changes everything. Do you understand?
“No!” Vanya bursts out, sounding angry. “No, I don’t understand!”
“I’m dying, Vanya.” Five says bluntly, which throws off Vanya’s anger like she’s been dunked in cold water. “I didn’t know. Not until today. This is the biggest change I’ve ever made, do you understand? I didn’t know. I need to leave. I need to - to reboot. I don’t belong to this timeline, not anymore. It’s rejecting me, unless I can reset myself. But if I do, where will I land?”
Vanya looks confused, and Five can’t blame her. He’s dropping a lot on her right now.
“Isn’t it funny?” Five’s smile is anything but cheerful, “Isn’t is cruel? If I want to survive, I have to jump. But if I jump, I can’t change anything. So you see? I have to try and change everything now. I have to trust.”
Five loves his siblings, but he’s never trusted them. Not really. Not with the important things. But now he has to. Has to take a, ha, leap of faith.
“Five, talk sense.” Vanya demands.
And so Five tells her everything. He tells her about yesterday, about getting up from the dinner table, of jumping three times and ending up in the apocalypse. He tells her about the Commission, about Reginald’s death, about a man with two faces who convinced Vanya he loved her and turned her against them. He tells her about the end of the world.
Vanya is pale, and shaking. “I wouldn’t.” She whispers, “I wouldn’t.”
“You won’t.” Five says, “You were manipulated. It was planned, you were pushed. You were the weapon that was used to start the apocalypse, but you weren’t the shooter, Van. You’re my sister. I love you. I know you. You’re stronger than you know.”
“I’m not. Five, I’m not.”
“Look at me.” Five demands, getting get attention. “I’m right here. Telling you. I’m not in Luther’s room, asking him to keep an eye on you. I’m not in Allison’s room, telling her to use her powers to keep you in line. I’m not in Ben’s room, telling him the future. I’m talking to you. Vanya. My sister.”
“Five...” Vanya whispers.
“I’m a secret keeper, Vanya.” Five says, “I don’t trust. But I’m here, and I’m trusting you.”
“Why?” Vanya asks, a sensible question.
“You’re the only one I can. Luther and Diego are too hotheaded. Allison too vain. Ben too afraid, Klaus too fragile.” Five tells her as another tremor goes through his body. “I love you. I trust you. You’re going to save the world.”
“How?”
“You need to be careful. There are eyes on us. Watching. If we change too much, we risk everything. You need to be quiet, you need to be wary, you need to trust no one. Dad thinks he controls you entirely, he thinks he has you completely under his thumb. He doesn’t watch you the way he does the rest of us, which gives you a freedom none of the others have.”
Vanya shakes her head, “I don’t know, Five.”
“If you want to stop taking your pills, you can. You can sneak out. You can train by yourself, away from the cameras. If you’re careful, you can learn.” Five looks at her sympathetically, “But the thing about that power, is that you have to keep it secret. Dad kept you, when he thought he could control you. What would he do if he thought he couldn’t?”
Vanya lifts a hand to her mouth. She wants their father’s attention with same fierce heartbreaking way they all do, but she also knows him. He’s Reginald Hargreeves, and he’s drugged her for the entirety of his life in the name of control. He is the ultimate power in the household. Reginald doesn’t flinch at killing. They all know that.
“You have to be careful.” He tells Vanya, “You have to stay alive. You have to save Ben. You have to be smart, you have to be so smart, Van. And you have to do it alone, because I won’t be here.”
Vanya nods, quiet and solemn.
Another shudder ripples through Five, this one hard enough to make him fell off the bed with a muffled shout. Vanya shoots to his side instantly, grabbing his arm and helping him up.
“You need to go, Five.” She says, frantic, “You need to go.”
“I don’t want to.” Five admits, “I don’t want to leave you alone. This is so much, Van. You shouldn’t have to do it alone.”
“I’m not alone.” Vanya tells him firmly, “I have you. And I’ll have you again, in seventeen years. It sounds like a long time, but that doesn’t matter. Because you’ll be alive. You’ve always been there for me, even when you didn’t know. Even when you thought I was ordinary. You’re the only person in the house who treats me like, like a person.”
“You’re my sister.” Five smiles, “I trust you.”
“Go, Five.” Vanya whispers, leading him to the window and hiking it up. Five appreciates the gesture, it’s always easier to jump when he knows where he’s going to land. “Go, and I’ll make sure you have a world to come back to.”
Five nods, and he’s crying a little as he pulls her into the tightest hug he can. She’s crying, too.
And then he jumps, and he’s out on the street. He turns to look back up at the window, and there’s Vanya with a hand to her mouth but still watching him. He nods to her, and then he jumps.
---
He’s crying, as he jumps the first time, but it’s almost in relief. The way he changed the timeline - it hurts. It’s not a simple thing. The other timelines he altered, they aren’t nearly as big. By not going the day he should have, by telling Vanya and asking her to save the world...
He gouged out a timeline. He carved out a future from time itself to cast it aside. Not just a little one, not one that didn’t matter, not the future of something as small as a human life. He changed the future of the world.
But when he bathes himself in blue, it smoothes over the ragged gaping wound he put in himself. It takes away the pain, because time is... adaptable. It isn’t linear. It repairs itself, given the opportunity.
He jumps again, and the pain gets even better as time itself heals. As it accepts his actions, what can and will happen.
He hesitates though, before the final jump. He never lived that first timeline. Not really. But he remembers it, which is nearly as bad. He remembers the hunger, sharp and painful. He remembers the grief. He remembers finding the bodies of his siblings, and not understanding what had happened. He remembers the apocalypse, in all of its gruesome glory. It’s never happened. It will never happen, because he trusts Vanya. But he remembers it, and so he hesitates.
But he trusts Vanya. He has to trust Vanya.
So he jumps, one final time, he jumps.
---
He stands on the street, and someone bumps into him from behind and mutters an apology, and Five is rooted to the ground. The world has not ended. He is on the street, in front of the manor, and he whirls around and looks up and a window and -
Vanya isn’t there. Of course she isn’t. He never got a time he arrived in the future-that-wasn’t. She wouldn’t be able to just... stand at a window all day. That would be silly.
He has to find her. He doesn’t know where she is. Except - except he can hear something. Loud, raised voices. Familiar voices, even out here on the street.
The courtyard.
Five is exhausted. He’s healed, the timelines have smoothed over and stopped killing him, but he’s tired. But even so, he jumps. It’s nice to have a view of where he’s going, but he’s never needed that.
He jumps into the middle of - an argument. His entire family is there. Harold Jenkins is there, yelling something about the family not loving her, and Five freezes.
And everybody freezes.
And then Vanya smiles at him and says, “Five. You made it.”
Harold Jenkins sputters, the rest of the family starts to shout, and in one smooth movement Vanya pulls something out of her jacket and turns around and -
Harold Jenkins falls to the ground. Dead. The gun sits in Vanya’s hand, steady as anything.
“Shit!” Luther roars, but Five doesn’t care about that.
He’s already run into Vanya’s arms. She drops the gun on the ground and folds him against her and he’s crying and he isn’t quite sure why. “Shhh, sh. It’s over.” She soothes him, her hand carding through his hair, “It’s over. You did it, Five. You saved the world.”
“No,” Five manages to find his voice, “You did. And you did it alone. You must have been so so alone.”
Vanya laughs, squeezing him tighter, “Don’t worry. I’ve had a lot of practice at that.”
“What the actual fuck.” Ben says. Ben. Alive and wonderful and alive and Five draws back just to stare at him. “Five?”
“You killed a man!” Luther hollers, looking absolutely scandalized. He isn’t huge, isn’t wearing a trenchcoat. He looks... smaller, than Five remembers him being. More normal.
Klaus looks... normal. Well. He’s got what look like the tightest possible skinny jeans and a crop top and way too much eyeliner, but otherwise - he looks healthier, draped across Ben’s shoulder and staring at Five with wide eyes.
“Vanya?” Allison demands, and Five kind of wants to duck behind Vanya because his breath is coming a little bit fast and he feels a little bit dizzy, which is stupid because this is everything he ever wanted. Everything. His family, safe and sound and whole.
Vanya smoothes her hand through Five’s hair again, and then looks around at their audience. “I think,” She says, and her voice is strong and sure and so very different from the Vanya Five knows, the one that whispers and tiptoes as quiet as a mouse, “We should take this conversation inside.”
And that’s how they all end up in the living room, squished onto the couches. Five is next to Vanya, he hasn’t let go of her arm.
“I think I should tell you about the night that Five went missing.” Vanya says finally, when they’re all settled.
“What about it?” Diego says gruffly, his arms crossed defensively across his chest. He also hasn’t taken his eyes off of Five.
“Five’s powers aren’t just jumping.” Vanya says, after looking at Five to get his nod. And doesn’t that comment set a fox among the chickens? There’s a solid five minutes of yelling before the family realizes that Vanya is patiently waiting for silence.
Vanya smiles and nods approvingly when they all settle down. Five wonders if she’s a kindergarten teacher or something in this timeline.
(He has to hold in another shudder at the thought, because he’s finally realized why his lungs feel so tight and he hasn’t really spoken yet. He’s terrified. He’s so used to knowing, and he’s just dropped himself in the middle of a giant mystery. He loved his siblings. He loved them in the timeline-that-wasn’t. He loves them now. But he doesn’t know them. He doesn’t know anything. And that terrifies him.
In their household, information was power. To not have any at all is... unthinkable. Horrifying. He’s so scared, he can barely breathe. But Vanya is holding him back, and she just saved the world, and he tries his best to trust her.)
“Five’s powers are to do with time. He saw the future, and he saw the end of the world, and he decided to stop it.” Vanya says finally, “And he told me how to do it.”
“Why is Five so quiet?” Allison demands, sounding worried. Five wonders if Claire exists in this universe. He mourns, just a tiny bit, for the niece he never met.
Vanya squeezes Five a little, and looks at him with just as much worry in her eyes. “Five?”
And for some reason, the first thing that falls out of Five’s mouth is - “Dad’s dead?”
“Dead as a doornail.” Klaus confirms, and Ben nods.
“Really dead?” Five insists, and he’s not sure why, “You’re sure he’s dead?”
“Yes, Five.” Ben says, quietly. “He’s dead.”
Five looks up, and he finds Diego’s gaze and holds it, “If he knew, if he knew what I could do...” He sees the realization spark behind Diego’s eyes, “I saw it, when I thought I was going to tell him. I saw what he would do, if he knew.”
“So you kept it a secret.” Diego says softly. He’s not as hard as not-Five’s Diego, or at least not right now. He looks sympathetic, as Five nods carefully.
“Do you remember,” Five begins, pausing the clear his throat, “Do you remember that mission where I told Luther his plan was stupid?”
Luther’s eyes are wide when Five glances over at him.
But Five skips over Luther and looks at Klaus, “You could have died.” He tells his brother, and his voice shakes a little bit, and it’s terrifying to say these things out loud. Part of him expects his father to walk out from behind a door, having heard everything. “You would have died. Except you already died, the night before, when I was dreaming.”
“Five...” Klaus shakes his head, and Ben grabs Klaus’s arm tightly as if the lanky man will evaporate into thin air.
“I for one want to know about the dead body in the courtyard.” Luther says, sounding a little shellshocked.
“He introduced himself as to me as Leonard Peabody.” Vanya picks up, “His real name is Harold Jenkins. He wanted to destroy the Umbrella Academy. He didn’t realize that he was actually priming a bomb.”
“A bomb?” Diego yelps, “What bomb?”
“Me.” Vanya says, smiling.
Everyone stares at her, and Five hits her on the arm. “You aren’t a bomb. You’re my sister.”
Vanya smiles at him, and tucks him firmer against his side. Two days ago, Five would have bristled and pushed her away. Today, Five’s entire world has been ripped away from him and he refuses to feel guilty for taking comfort where he can.
Five turns to glare at Luther, at Diego, at everyone. “You all died.” Five informs them, and he isn’t sure why he’s angry, “The whole world died. I don’t care about one murderer who hated us, who wanted us to suffer. He tried to use Vanya, and I’m glad he’s dead!”
Silence follows this declaration, and Five isn’t actually sure when he’d started yelling. Or when he’d started crying, actually.
But there’s Vanya, and she’s there folding him back into her arms and letting him tuck his face into her neck as he sobs like the world ended. Except it hadn’t. It hadn’t.
“What’s wrong with him?” Klaus fails to whisper.
“It’s been a long day for him.” Vanya says, and Five is so tired. “He’s just helped pull off the biggest con of the century, and the fight isn’t over yet.”
“The commission.” Five whispers.
“Get some rest.” Vanya tells him, pushing at him until he’s paying down on the sofa with his head in her lap, “You’re practically falling asleep. We’re still going to be here after you get some sleep.”
“You promise?” Five asks, and maybe it’s childish but - he’s afraid. He’s afraid he’s going to open eyes and find out that this is just a dream again, that he’s going to have to do this all over again.
“I promise.” Vanya says, smiling. “Have I ever broken a promise?”
And Five’s eyes are slipping shut, and the world has been spinning for a while, and he’s had a very very emotionally exhausting conversation with his sister, jumped in time three times, and then had a very emotional time reuniting with his family and watching his sister shoot a man.
“Trust me.” Vanya says softly.
So he does.
---
“He’s so little.” Ben whispers, a solid five minutes after Five’s eyes slip shut.
“He’s thirteen.” Vanya tells them, carding her fingers through Five’s hair. “He’s thirteen, and he’s had the weight of the world on his shoulders.”
“Why didn’t he just tell us?” Allison asks.
Vanya just looks at Allison with sad eyes, “Why would he have? By staying quiet, he gave himself the power to act. By staying quiet, he protected himself.”
“He should have told us.” Luther states firmly.
“He was just a kid.” Vanya says, “He was just a kid, and he was scared. We all were. But he was more scared than anyone. You know the way Dad pitted us against one another. He loved us, but he didn’t trust us. Not when Dad was too smart and too cunning and too cruel.”
“Don’t talk about Dad like that.” Luther says quietly, and just shakes his head, “I know. I know. But - I know. But he’s still - he’s still Dad. I still - I know, but - ”
Luther has had a week, so Vanya forgives him. Finding out Dad was... Dad had been a bit of a shock to him.
“What now?” Ben asks.
“Now, I tell you about the Commission.” Vanya says serenely, “Now, we work together and make sure that the world stays whole. Now, we look after our brother.”
“If I remember anything about Five, that’s going to be a difficult job.” Klaus waves his hands a little but in emphasis.
“Good thing he has all of us then, isn’t it?”
---
That’s it. That’s the au. Five’s time travel powers translate into seeing the future, and he uses it to give his sister a little trust and a lot of responsibility and manages to save the world
Vanya listens to her brother. She keeps her head down. She knows, with undeniable proof, that her family loves her. That at least one person trusts her. That at least one person believes in her.
She is Vanya, with a mission. With the most important mission the Umbrella Academy had ever faced. Perhaps the most dangerous mission the Umbrella had ever faced. The scariest mission, because it’s an undercover one.
It’s one where Vanya kept quiet, stayed silent, stayed under the radar. She hid pills under her tongue and left the mansion, going to the parks in the dead of night with her violin tucked under her chin trying to figure out a power she didn’t quite understand.
Vanya saves Ben. She crept out, was in the right place at the right time. Blasted one man into a wall with the sound of gunshots rattling in her skull, and then went home and bit her knuckles until the whole team came home safe and sound.
She saves Luther. Luther was hurt, but he didn’t die. He wasn’t at the point their father tried an experimental drug on him. His knee might never recover. He might always walk with a limp. But he’s alive, and he doesn’t have to hide. Isn’t ashamed any time he looks in the mirror.
She saves Klaus. She gets him into rehab. She encourages Ben to check in on him. She keeps in touch with the both, makes sure Klaus has enough to eat and isn’t on the streets and that he’s happy and healthy and safe.
She saves Allison. She doesn’t write her book, but she writes to Patrick. She talks to him, on the phone, and essentially gives him the shovel talk. She tells him that Allison has issues, she encourages them to get therapy. Couples therapy. Allison works on her issues at Patrick’s insistence. They still divorce, but it’s amiable this time around.
She saves Diego, who in another world grieved Ben and pushed the rest of the family away. Diego is less angry. More solid. He dropped out of the police academy, but he co-owns a gym and boxes in his free time and he doesn’t live in a boiler room.
She saves Five, who is so young and so frightened, who loves her enough to trust her. She saves him, by saving the world. Her brother, her wonderful brother who pulled the strings for so long and was terrified to stop. Who is thirteen years old and a child and it’s hard to believe that she was ever that young herself.
They have a lot to do still, of course. The Commission isn’t going to be happy, they’re going to be sending people. But they aren’t as broken. And they have a unifying force to help them along:
Five. Because he’s young, and tiny, and he reminds them of exactly what their father did to them in a way canon five just... doesn’t. Because canon!Five looks young, but they know he isn’t every time they interact with him. This Five is... he’s young. He’s scared. He’s angry. He’s grieving.
He doesn’t know them, and he isn’t sure if he wants to. Isn’t sure if he wants to let go of the siblings he knew while wanting desperately to connect with the siblings of now. Because at the end of the day, he loves them.
And Vanya is independent, and more confident, and she hasn’t been on that numbing medication in years. She hasn’t been a mouse since she left her father’s house when she was eighteen. Her brother was gone, and she had to step into his role as puppetmaster. She had to pull strings, to keep her family alive, while never looking like she was.
Vanya has waited seventeen years preparing. She has a two bedroom apartment, she moved most of Five’s things over there years ago. She’s ready to do what someone should have done all those years ago. She’s ready to take care of her brother, because she didn’t realize until she took the job just how much he had on his plate.
The family has to band together to deal with the commission agents. But Vanya refuses to be a weapon. She refuses to be the bomb. She refuses to betray her family.
Five chooses to trust, but Vanya is the one who steps up. Decides that even if she doesn’t care about the rest of the world, even if she doesn’t particularly care for half of her siblings, it doesn’t matter.
Vanya is going to save the world.

No one does season wide character development like the umbrella academy.
Luther went from locking up his sister because he thought she was dangerous and fulfilling the role he thought his father gave him with everything he had, to genuinely apologizing to his sister for not getting her the help she needed and focusing on being there for his siblings in the way they needed him to be.
Diego went from saying he would sleep well only after killing Patch's murderers and telling his siblings he would see them in ten years, to forgiving his little sister in less than a minute and encouraging his siblings to break away from the roles their father gave them ( and being supportive to the brother who pissed him off the most last season)
Allison went from getting everything she wanted and subsequently losing it because of her powers and using them to keep herself happy, to finding and being part of a relationship with mutual love and respect and being a huge part of an important movement that she believed in, all on her own merit, without the use of her powers.
Klaus went from using drugs to numb the pain he felt to starting a cult (okay this one's a little shaky, but he was sober and we should appreciate that) (Also his dynamic with Allison and his little sister who ended the world??? The cutest)
Five went from tormenting himself about being unable to save his siblings to finally being able to use his powers to single-handedly save them all.
Ben went from being scared to walk into the light to sacrificing himself for Vanya. (he also got to hug two of his siblings like he deserved)
Vanya went from ending the world because of her inability to control her powers, to being able to help a little boy control his, and save his life.
Honestly I can't wait to watch Lila's character arc in season 3.

ben and allison have the same energy. fucking identical energy. the only hargreeves with any degree of emotional intelligence. they're both capable of asking and answering the question "are you okay" like normal human people. they're hogging all the personal responsibility and growth. they're fighting a losing battle for family communication
allison chasing after vanya like "stop being an idiot i love you you're infuriating listen to what i'm saying" and ben chasing after klaus like "you dumbass you moron you incorrigible manchild listen to me for once" they're the wild card wranglers. they're not very good at it but they try their best
if they could've combined their braincells the apocalypse never would've happened. end of season 1 allison gets close to vanya in the final hour and chooses to save her life (dooms the world in doing so but makes the correct Sibling Choice). end of season 2 ben gets close to vanya (with the added bonus of being able to blast straight through her power high) and actually talks her down using the emotional intelligence allison was aiming for in the first place!!!! go team saving vanya from herself go

Eight knew right away that her sister was hurting. From the smallest memories when they were younger, Eight would have the visions of Vanya. Not having powers, but her yes white staring as if they'd been hurt. This was a scary time for Eight. She didn't know what it meant, but in fear of it being real, she kept it to herself. Rather than detaching herself from Vanya, she became closer to the girl.
The very thing that Reginald Hargreeves tried to prevent. The mixture of the girls who could end life as they knew it.
Eight snuck out of her own room to speak with Vanya when no one was around. They played as loud as they could, thankful for Eight's powers. Vanya played her the violin beautifully every time, and Eight couldn't be prouder to have her as a sister. She even took up a few lessons with the girl before things went to shit.
Reginald sent Eight on more missions to keep the two apart, but Eight whenever she had the time sat down with the girl despite the yelling that she would get from doing so. But all those were the only memories left of Eight and Five to Vanya.
After the two had disappeared and were pronounced dead, Vanya had no one. No one to talk to. Congratulate her. To calm her. To call her a good sister. She missed Eight.
"I need to go," Eight gasped, getting up shakily.
James and Ella looked at each other sadly knowing it was time. The little blonde boy walked over and hugged his mother for the last time. Both hugging each other tightly. Ella joined the hug and smiled.
"Go save the world kiddo," Ella said, pulling away.
James pulled away slightly and smiled at his mother, "Tell dad I said hi, and that I love him."
Eight put down her son and nodded, "I will," she said pausing, "I love you both so much."
Ella now holding James nodded, "We know. Now go."
Eight closed her eyes and as she opened then she began coughing. Her hands pushed all around her but couldn't move. Frustrated, she blasted her surroundings with her newfound powers. As the rubble moved away from her. She got up and looked around.
"God..." she gasped looking at the demolished building that was the Academy. She knew who had the power to destroy this place.
"What the fuck did they do to her," Eight grumbled climbing off the ruble and away from the mansion. Walking along the sidewalk she found a newspaper on the floor. It was the exact headline as the original paper. The Apocalypse was still happening.
Closing her eyes she used her powers to locate any of her siblings, that's when she found their thoughts not too far from here.
Super Star Lanes. She said and then quickly opened up a portal to the place. Looking up she walked in the doors and asked for some bowling shoes.
The front desk person looked her up and down as she looked dusty and shrugged, "What size?"
"Six," Eight replied as she was then handed her shoes.
Then she walked over to her family and slumped down next to Five as she removed her boots and put on the bowling shoes.
Everyone was quiet, and Klaus was shaky, "Do you all see her?"
The siblings looked at her covered in dust and looked at her tying the shoes.
"Thanks for leaving me at the house guys," She grumbled, crossing her arms around her chest.
"We thought you were dead, Vanya took down the entire Academy, and we couldn't open the door," Luther said leaning forward.
Eight stood up and punched Luther in the face, "You're a fucking idiot you know that? Why would you lock Vanya down there?"
"Ow!" Luther exclaimed grabbing his nose, "She has—"
"Yeah I knew a long time ago, King Kong," Eight seethed leaning forward to look at Luther, "Now why did you lock her?"
"She was a danger to all of us!" Luther said.
"Did you even attempt to maybe calm her down? Offer to help her?" Eight questioned.
"No...I didn't think—" Luther began but Eight interrupted.
"You never think, you babbling monkey!" Eight exclaimed and slumped down on the chair next to Five.
Weary Luther looked around to his siblings, "Look, I hate to be the one to say this, but everyone needs to prepare," He said.
"For what?" Diego asked defensively.
"To do whatever it takes to stop Vanya," He replied just as quickly.
Eight got up suddenly ready to attack the large man, but Five grabbed her wrist pulling her to sit back down. Allison was lucky enough to smack him with her notepad. Eight didn't have to ask anyone to know what happened to Allison.
"We may not have a choice Allison," Luther said, looking at the woman.
"Bullshit," said Diego, "There are always options."
"Yeah, like what?" Five finally spoke up.
"I don't know," Diego said, responding.
Luther got up, "Look, whatever we decide, we need to find Vanya and fast she could be anywhere," he told his siblings.
"Or....here," said Klaus motioning the newspaper in his hands and leaning forwards so they all could see.
"That's right. Her concert is tonight," Diego mentioned.
"Hello," A woman wearing a blue polo popped up, "I have to intrude, but my manager says if you're not gonna bowl, you gotta leave," she said and walked away.
"Who's turn is it?" Diego asked.
Eight got up from her seat and looked over at the chubby man at the counter, she grabbed a bright pink ball and lifted it over her head and threw it angrily. As the ball landed, it bounced its way to a different lane granting her a strike elsewhere. The blonde huffed and glared at the old man, then sitting back down next to Five.
Allison began writing in her notepad and looked at her siblings, 'She's our sister.'
"Allison is right Luther," Eight said as she had seen the woman writing.
"We're the only ones capable of stopping this. We have a responsibility to Dad," Luther said to his siblings.
"To dad? No, I've heard enough about—" Diego began loudly.
"—He sacrificed everything to bring us back together," Luther finished.
"I'm with Luther on this one," Five said, looking at the man, "We can't give a chance to fight back. There are billions of lives at stake. We're past trying to save one."
Eight glared at her husband, "We're not winning by killing her Five. I'm with Diego."
"Hey, guys maybe I can help," Klaus offered to his siblings.
"Now is not the time," Luther told the Séance.
"No, let him finish," Diego interjected, "He saved my life today."
"Really?" Five and Eight chorused.
"Is that true?" Luther asked.
Everyone is now staring at Klaus.
"Yeah, Yeah, I did take credit for it," He forced out looking around and then to Eight who probably would be the one one to believe him, "In fact, the real hero....was Ben."
Everyone looked at him a bit weird including the blonde.
"Darling explain yourself what?" Eight said.
"Today, he punched me in the face. And earlier at the house, he was the one who saved Diego's life, not me."
"You are unbelievable, Klaus," Luther said, a bit shocked as to where his lie would go.
Eight and Five looked at each other and shrugged.
"Alright I'll give you proof," He said, picking up a bowling ball, "All right, it's showtime, baby," He said looking over Five's shoulder to where Ben is supposed to me.
But nothing happened, the ball bounced straight onto the floor.
"Is there a way to silence that screams out to be the center of attention?" Luther said angrily.
"Hey don't talk to him like that," Eight said towards Luther, "I believe you, Klaus, just next time try not to fail."
"You know I liked you a lot better before you got laid," Klaus said equally as mad.
Eight choked on her spit, "You were a virgin?" The girl laughed loudly, slapping her hand on Five's thigh. The boy jumped from the action.
Klaus realized his mistake and looked at Allison who looked up with wide eyes, "It wasn't his fault, he was ridiculously high, right? And the girl thought he was a furry." He tried saving.
Eight threw her head back in laugher, "A furry! Aha, this is the greatest thing!" she giggles wiping away fake tears.
Allison looked at Luther and took her notepad and walked away, "Allison, wait," Luther called after her, as he followed her.
The blonde continued to giggle as the two left hurriedly.
"Excuse me, it's my son Kenny's birthday today, wouldn't your son and daughter be happier playing with kids their own age?" A large plump woman walked over with her son, "Assuming it's okay with your two dads."
Five and Eight looked at each other, and then back at the woman.
"I would rather chew off my own foot," Five seethed at the woman.
Eight slapped her left hand over her mouth, and giggled, "Sorry about my husband, you and your potato child may leave now," the blonde stated with a large smile, her dimple showing.
The smile on the woman's face fell and looked at the duo's hands. And indeed the two bands were on their left ring finger, "Husband?" She whispered oddly and took her son away from the weirdos. As they left, Five and Eight heard the familiar swoosh from near them.
The two got up and ran towards a different bowling alley, "How the hell did she find me?" Five asked to grab the container.
"The stupid candy," Eight said, "Told you not to trust dessert anymore," she finished.
Five quickly handed the container to Eight and searched his pocket, and indeed the tracker beeped.
"She's good," he said before dropping it and stepping on it.
Eight rolled her eyes and opened the container taking out a fortune cookie, and cracking it open, "Time marches on...or does it? Rain Quail, Rm 12..." Eight read aloud as she looked at him and dropped the paper in his hand, "You go, I'll make sure these idiots don't die."
Five gripped the paper and nodded, "Stay safe okay?"
Eight nodded and leaned in and kissed his cheek, "You come back to me in one piece okay?"
Five nodded and turned and disappeared, leaving her to bowl with her siblings.
Walking back she was met with Diego's gaze, "Where's Five?" He questioned.
"Away for the time being," she replied, picking up a ball and walking up and pushing the ball forward. Strike.
After many, many, strikes, Luther and Allison returned.
"Where's Five?" He asked the blonde.
"Gone," she replied simply knowing their small brains wouldn't get the type of work they do.
"Oh for the love of..." Luther began.
"I don't know, now get to you speech moon boy," Eight said not interested in a long speech.
"We go to the Icarus Theatre," Luther said simply.
Eight rose her eyebrow, "Great leadership Number One," she said scoffing as she shoved popcorn in her mouth.
"That's a location, not a plan," Diego added but Luther remained silent, "What is that all you got? Look, you wanna be Number One, fine, but you're gonna have to get us on the same page, Because right now we're all over the place."
"You're right we need a plan," said Luther but was shushed by Eight who got Spidey-feeling.
"Take cover!" Was all she said when she shoved Diego out of the way as bullets began to rain on them.
"Who the hell are these guys!" Diego yelled as he now held Eight from getting hit by any bullets.
"Maybe they're here for Kenny's birthday!" Klaus said.
"No, you idiots! The Commission sent them," She yelled from under Diego's arms, "We need to get out of here!"
Diego quickly let of Eight and stood up shooting a knife at one of the men. Seems they hit the sound and light system as they fell. The building fell into a lot of glowing lights with Saturday Night blasting in the speakers.
"Diego give me one of your knives!"Eight yelled over the noise.
Without hesitation, he did as told and watched her fling it using her telekinesis, and hit her target, and just as it did she pulled it out and watched it soar to a new body.
Diego and Eight looked around for a way out but noticed the exit was blocked.
"Number One what's your plan!" Eight yelled as she huddled with Diego.
"The lanes! Let's go!" Luther yelled.
Diego grabbed Eight's hand as they sprinted down the lanes, and quickly slipped past the pins to the door in the back. The siblings were luckily able to get away.
As they reached the outside, Eight opened a portal, for her siblings.
"Well go on, we don't have all day," Eight said as his siblings looked at the portal suspiciously. The blonde groaned and enlarged the portal and moved it towards them, thus forcing them to step through. Now they all stood before the Icarus Theatre. And walked up the steps, but Allison but up her notepad and faced it towards her siblings, 'I need to go alone.'
"Allison, I can't let you do that, all right?" Luther said to her.
Eight nodded, "For once I agree with Boots here, we're in all this together. The more we wait the worse it'll be," she finished and walked forward to Diego who looked back at his siblings.
"You hear the music? It started," Diego told Luther.
"Do you honestly think she's gonna listen? After everything that's happened?" Luther asked suspiciously to make it look bad.
"Luther to you maybe not, but Allison and I have a chance here," Eight added, pulling Diego, but he pulled her back and let Allison go.
"Diego—" she was cut off by his hand and looked over at Luther.
"You're using her as a distraction aren't you?" Diego asked his brother as he watched Allison leave.
"Our best chance to incapacitate Vanya," Luther confirmed, "She'll thank us later."
Diego pulled Eight ahead as Luther stayed behind to talk to Klaus.
The duo spits up as Eight walked far behind Allison in case of anything, Eight stood in shock. She played so well....it was like the rehearsals in her room late in the night. The music played so profoundly, it felt alive, just like Vanya looked.
Out of nowhere Diego and Luther began running to the girl and Eight gasped, not agreeing to this plan. That's why Diego made her go the other way. But before either of them could touch her, Vanya stood and waved her bow sending a sound wave at the two. Making the duo soar through the air and landing forcefully. The crowd, shocked, got up from their seats and began running out of the auditorium. The musicians too got up, but another wave of her bow made them sit back down as she began to play her violin, this time stepping forward as she began to glow. Angrily she threw another wave at the brothers.
Eight stood still watching it all happen, she was shoved as the civilians ran out screaming. This wasn't the Vanya that she knew. Carefully she hid behind one of the chairs not knowing where her other siblings were.
All of a sudden there was the same Commission men running in, begging to shoot at the spotted siblings. This made the rest of the orchestra leave frantically, not to get shot. But Vanya kept on playing just as she continued to glow a pale blue-white.
Her blue eyes moved to her siblings that were hidden, looking around. But somehow she couldn't hear anything. Her breathing began to get ragged. Eight was having a panic attack. Far away she could hear bullets be shot again. This time someone gripped her face to look at them. It was Five, and it looked like he was talking to her, but she couldn't hear him. All she could see was his lips moving. Eight looked around and saw men continue to shoot at them. Suddenly she remembered something.
"Klaus," Eight said suddenly, removing herself from Five's hands. Getting up she walked out from her hiding spot. The men shot at her, and multiple voices screamed out for her. But no bullet hit her as they all disintegrated to dust before touching her.
"What the fuck?" Diego yelled seeing the blonde walk over to Klaus without being injured.
The man walked in and was targeted by the bullets, but was saved when Eight reached for him.
"Klaus I read your mind, dad was right about your potential," she told him, "If Ben really did punch you and saved Diego. He might be able to save us all, with your help," Eight encouraged.
Ben looked at Klaus and then at Eight, "Told you she believed in you," he laughed.
Klaus nodded and clenched his fist as they began to glow a bright hue of blue. His face showed struggle as he began to get up from the ground.
Eight smiled at his brother, she knew he had in him, he just held himself back all these years. Slowly Ben's body appeared growling a similar blue to Klaus' fists.
"Ben," Eight whispered happily, seeing her lost sibling.
Ben's ghost looked over at her and smiled, then yelling, releasing the beast. Grabbing all the gunmen above and near them. Either taking them or ripping them apart to their fatal end.
"How's the lookout?" Klaus asked as the men were finally killed, he looked over at Eight who was hunched on the floor and hugged her tight, "Thanks for believing in me."
Five rushed over to his wife who was in the middle aisle looking terrible. She was sweating, and he could feel the waves of heat coming off her body.
"Love, look at me, you have to help us," Five said gripping her face who was breathing hard.
Eight nodded weakly, and lifted her hands to his face, and pulled him into a kiss. Five was surprised but did not pull away. Rather he embraced her and kissed her harder. It was their first kiss in a very long time. The kiss was loving and tender. Her lips were soft just like he remembered. Still having the faint taste of strawberries for some reason.
Five pulled away breathing hard, "I thought you didn't want to kiss me when I looked like this," he chuckled as their foreheads touched.
"James told me to tell you, that he loves you," she said, pecking his lips once more, but this time pulling away completely.
Five's eyes widened, "You saw James?" he asked sadly, and the blonde nodded sadly.
"He's with my mother, in the house we used to live in," She said with a smile. Her husband just smiled in knowing his little boy was okay, wherever in the afterlife.
The two looked back at Vanya as her suit began to change to a brilliant white, just as the building began to shake and crack under the pressure she was creating.
Everyone huddled around each other, just as Diego got back.
"Hey, where were you?" Luther asked sarcastically.
"Honoring a memory," Diego replied back as he gave Five a look, "So, how do you wanna end this thing?"
"We surround her," Luther yelled, "Alright? We come at her from all angles," He told his siblings.
Five gripped his wife's hand knowing what was about to happen.
"So, a suicide mission," Klaus asked.
"Yeah, but one of us could get through. It's the only chance we got," Five said looking directly at Eight.
The blonde took a shaky breath, and squeezed his hand, "We all in?" she asked her siblings who all nodded.
"Yeah," they all nodded, as the building around them shook.
"Spread out, I'll take the dead center," Eight replied as her siblings took off. And Five released her hand.
Eight turned around and slowly walked up the aisle, she knew the warnings her father wrote were probably right, but right now she was the only one that could face Vanya's powers. The building dropped dust from the cracks the building created.
Her husband and siblings ran towards her, but like she knew was going to happen they were caught by her power.
Eight took a deep breath and let her powers go. Her hair and the rest of her body glowing a fiery golden. She levitated in the air, and just as if there was an invisible platform she began walking towards her sister.
"Vanya, let them go," Eight said as she walked past her sister's barrier.
The White Violin was confused as to how this was happening. She had easily broken past her barriers with her fire.
"Don't make me fight you," Eight threatened but she didn't listen.
The blonde walked closer her feet now on the stage, tears blurred her eyes as her hands now glowed bright orange and purple. Her power began to surround the two, orange, gold, red, and bits of purple swirled around them.
"We can help you if you let us," she told her now in front of her.
Vanya's bright light dropped her siblings as the power of Eight grew hotter and hotter. The ring grew small to the point it covered them up completely. And just like that, a large explosion of orange erupted in a ring around the two. Shutting down Vanya's blue-white force.
Gasping the women in white glowed for a moment and her stress and anger exploded in a ray towards the ceiling. Eight's powers quickly shut off as she reached for the falling Vanya, and caught her before she could touch the ground. The other siblings quickly surrounded her, Allison taking Vanya in her arms checking for injuries.
Five gripped his wife in a tight hug, glad that she was okay, "I didn't know you had that much power."
Eighth laughed into his neck, "Our son taught me how to control it," she said, crying just a little, thinking that everything was over.
"Of course that kid taught you," Five chuckled holding the blonde close to him.
The group was silent as they went over what happened in their heads, that was before Klaus said something, "Uh....guys?"
Five and Eight pulled away from their hug and looked up to where he was pointing.
"You see that big Moon rock coming towards us?" he asked his siblings.
The duo stood from the ground and held hands as they did indeed see the flaming rock hurtling towards earth. They didn't stop the apocalypse.
"That's not good," Luther said wide-eyed, also staring at the flying rock.
"So this is it? So much for....saving the world," Klaus said disappointedly looking down at his dog tags.
"If only Sir Reginald could see us now...The Umbrella Academy. A total failure," Diego said standing and staring at their incoming end.
"At least we were together in the end, as a family," Luther said looking around at his siblings.
Eight looked down at their intertwined hands, "Five when I read Father's journals on me he said that usually The Force amplified my powers. My portals would be too dangerous to test, as We'd get stuck in some other universe for all we know. But I can amplify your ability with time-manipulation...." Eight told Five as he was trying to think of anything.
Five looked at her and realized it could be possible. He didn't know if alone he'd be strong enough to take everyone back in time. But with Eight they might have a shot. "Eight's right, this might not have to be the end of this."
Luther looked back at Five, just as all the other siblings did, "What are you two talking about?"
"I think I have a way outta here, but you have to trust me," Five told his siblings.
But the boys all shook their heads, "Uh no thanks," it's not that they didn't trust Five, it's they didn't trust Five.
Eight groaned, "Okay well trust me," she said over to them and they gave each other a look, "Look we don't have long before anything, in less than...." she looked down at her bare wrist and looked up, "a minute we'll be nothing but dust."
"What's your idea then?" Diego asked the married couple.
"We use my ability to time travel, but this time I'll take you all with me. Last time I was able to take Eight with me, but all of you I'm not so sure," he explained to all of them.
"Five that doesn't help our situation—" Diego said towards Five.
"—Listen, idiot, he won't have to try too hard, I'll be using my ability to amplify his powers enough to get us out of here," The blonde explained towards her stupid siblings.
"Can you both do this?" Diego finally asked.
"We don't know, first time," Five replied.
"What's the worst that can happen?" Diego suddenly said realizing it's either death or time travel.
"You're looking at them, 58-year-olds stuck in different aged bodies," Five said looking briefly at his wife.
"Oh, what the hell? I'm in," Diego confirmed looking at his other siblings.
Klaus still clutching his tags nodded, "Yeah, whatever. I'm in."
"Me too. Allison?" Luther agreed now looking at Allison who held Vanya's unconscious body.
The curly-haired woman nodded confirming her thoughts.
"Ben?" Eight asked making sure not to leave her brother out.
The ghost of Ben smiled, now knowing his sibling counted him in, even if he was dead.
"Great, yeah, he's in," Klaus confirmed looking at the blonde.
"Okay, great. Luther, grab Vanya," Five asked as he moved to her.
Luther did as he was told but looked up, "Wait, should we be taking her? I mean, if she's the cause of the apocalypse. Isn't that like taking the bomb with us?"
"Vanya may always cause the apocalypse, but this time we have a chance to train her, get her used to this new power. I know I'll be able to help her," Eight said as her siblings surrounded each other.
"Okay all of you grab onto each other," Eight said as they followed her instructions, as they did she grabbed a hold of either side Five's face and nodded.
Five and Eight both looked into each other's eyes as their powers worked together. Slowly her hair began to float and glow in its familiar gold. Just then her powers built a bridge for Five to activate his much easier. Opening the large tear in time, where it began to open larger around them. The couple groaned as they pushed their abilities to their max, as the electricity around them began to crackle. Five's blue mixed with Eight's bright colorful hues of oranges, and reds.
"Hold on! It's gonna get messy!" Five yelled to his siblings.
Just then all the sibling's flickered to their young bodies, all matching Five's. And with a final push from the two, the tear in space zapped them off into a new time. Just in time before the Moon's destruction took everything with her.

Secrets | F.H
Paring: Five Hargreeves X Fem!Reader
Summary: Five has a hidden soft spot for the Hargreeves friend. He makes a sudden decision when they start suspect something.
The Hargreeves family didn’t divulge into technology that much. Allison was the only one with a proper cellphone. That statement would’ve still been confirmed if they hadn’t been introduced to a female named Y/n.
While the girl inhabited powers such as telekinesis, she lived an everyday life. She had walked up to the academy one day and introduced herself. To say they were hesitant would be putting it lightly.
However, Y/n was the glue they needed to stay together. After helping them through saving the world and doomsday, they recognized that she was more needed than they thought.
Now they all sat at a restaurant together, excluding Y/n. The girl had decided to stay with her parents for the evening instead.
“ So Five. “ Allison pondered as she took a sip from her drink, “ You and Y/n have been relatively close lately. “
Klaus giggled, “ I’ve seen you two hang out together! “ Klaus exclaimed, and Five groaned, “ Glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed. “ Diego murmured.
“ Do you like her? “ Vanya queried, “ No. She's a friend, nothing more. “ Five responded sternly.
Allison raised her eyebrows in rebuttal, “ I don’t think so. I’ve seen you two together. “ Allison said unconvinced, “ Fantastic! You can see. Amazing thing, really. “ The teenage boy spat sarcastically.
Luther rolled his eyes, “ We don’t mean to harp on you, Five. We just like seeing you happy. “ Vanya softly defended, “ I appreciate it, but she’s nothing more than a friend. “
Five sighed as he threw his blazer to the floor and collapsed on Y/n’s bed, making the young girl chuckled at his antics. Gently she ran her fingers through his hair.
“ They’re catching on. “ Five-spoke muffled through her pillows, “ Mm? “ Y/n hummed, confused.
Five lifted his head from the pillow, “ They’re catching on. “
The boy had now flipped, so his back was laid against the mattress, and he stared at the ceiling of the girl's bedroom.
“ I mean, it isn’t a bad thing if they found out. “ Y/n responded, laying beside him, “ Maybe not, but I thought you wanted to keep this secret. “ Five stated, looking at her e/c eyes.
Y/n sighed, “ I just don’t want them to constantly be on us, ya know? “ Y/n confessed, “ Yeah, I get it. “ Five said in agreement.
“ I love you. “ Y/n muttered smiling, “ I love you too. “ Five smiled.
Y/n giggled, “ Come here, you big baby. “
Five chuckled and laid on her chest. His arms wrapped around her waist and his head on her chest. Y/n tangled her hand into his hair while the other rubbed his back.
He sighed and ended up falling asleep. Gently she kissed the top of his head and smiled. Y/n leaned her head back on the pillow and fell asleep. Both lovers fell asleep together.
Allison had been curious to see where Five snook off to every night. While there were times, Y/n would spend the night at the Hargreeves manor, most of the time around ten o’clock Five would disappear. Then before anyone woke up, he’d reappear.
Klaus and Allison made it their own personal mission to figure out where he was going. Although the spatial jumped to her house every night, they would find little things to help.
Example one, when Five came home one morning after falling asleep at Y/n’s house, he wore an unfamiliar pair of sweatpants. Example two, this time, he came home with a hoodie that most definitely wasn’t his.
The last example was the scent on the hoodie. It didn’t smell of his cologne. It smelt of her perfume. Not to mention he slept with the little stuffed animal she gave him when he was sick.
So a couple of weeks later, at again, another family dinner, they brought it up.
“ So Fivey, how’s Y/n? “ Klaus queried, “ What do you mean? “ Five questioned suspiciously.
Diego snickered, “ Well, we all know you disappear at night and don’t come back till the morning. You aren’t slick. “ Allison responded, “ You’ve also come back home in new clothing that definitely wasn’t yours. Not to mention, I don’t think you put on perfume. “
“ You can’t forget the best part, sister Allison; he also sleeps with the stuffed animal Y/n gave him while he was sick. “ Klaus added, smiling brightly, “ How in the hell did you find out about all that? “ Five asked with a particular annoyance in his tone.
“ It’s pretty obvious. “ Vanya commented, “ You don’t ever change out of the clothes when you appear back home. Not to mention you fall asleep with the door open. “
Five groaned, “ Just admit it, Fivey. You like little Y/n. “ Klaus teased, “ She’s my friend. “ Five counterclaimed.
“ Mm, if that’s the case, then why do you go to her house every night and not come back home till morning? “ Allison queried, “ I spend time with her. Sometimes I spend the night with her to leave our horrid house. “ The flustered male admitted.
“ So when she wears your blazer, it’s just coincidental? “ Diego asked, “ S- She wears my blazer? “ Five blushed.
Klaus chuckled, “ All the time! I saw her yesterday at the park wearing it. I thought she was some form of imposter. “ Klaus responded, and Five’s face was a bright magenta, “ I- I didn’t know. “ The boy muttered.
Vanya put a hand on his shoulder, “ It’s okay if you like her. We’re not judging you. We actually quite like her. “
“ Fine. We’re dating. We’ve been dating for some months now. I disappear to her house to spend the night there, so I don’t have a panic attack or feel like I’m back in the apocalypse. “ Five confessed, slightly agitated, “ Wow. “ A surprised Allison spoke.
Without warning, Five had spatial jumped out of dinner. Y/n almost jumped in shock when Five appeared in her bedroom, looking upset. So without hesitation, she stood up and hugged him.
His face was nuzzled in her neck as he left a gentle kiss on her shoulder, his arms wrapped securely around her.
“ What’s wrong, my love? “ Y/n questioned as her hand played with his hair, “ Marry me. “
“ What? “

i’ve just thought of a concept that is either genius or madness, i haven’t decided yet. but what if vanya and diego swapped their season 2 arcs?
so like, vanya touches down in 1963 and doesn’t forget everything that’s just happened, doesn’t forget that she’s just ended the world, and starts her sixties journey with a well deserved freak out. she ends up sobbing on the street about how she killed everyone, how she destroyed the moon- and promptly finds herself in a psychiatric clinic. which is where she finds lila. lila, who isn’t afraid of her. lila, who doesn’t make her feel like a freak because, lila is weird too.
and when vanya uses her powers to save them from the swedes, lila still isn’t afraid of her. they run, and it’s wild and crazy in a way that vanya never thought her life would be-
up until lila betrays her.
and it’s even worse, because vanya had trusted her, had told her about how jenkins had used her, and lila’s done it all over again - but she doesn’t look happy, doesn’t look smug or vindicated, and vanya recognises the look on her face, because she knows what it’s like to hurt the people you care about. and if vanya could be forgiven, if she could still be loved, then maybe lila could be too.
meanwhile, diego drops down in the sixties, immediately runs out into the street without thinking, and gets acquainted with the bumper of sissy’s car. and the guy looks dangerous, with all his scars and knives, but sissy just hit him with her car. so she takes him home - and of course she can’t tell her husband, so she sets him up in the barn, thinking once he wakes up he’ll be on his way
except, diego wakes up without his memories beyond his name. and he doesn’t seem dangerous, not really, so she can’t just throw him out, can she? besides, carl is barely home these days, and she could use some help around the farm. she doesn’t really intend to let him around harlan, but it’s a small farm, and it’s not long until she ends up introducing them. diego doesn’t seem to know how to act around kids, because he freezes up, but as soon as it’s clear that harlan is non-verbal, he sort of just- clicks. he doesn’t try to get harlan to speak, not like carl does, just quietly plays with him without any expectations. and when he witnesses one of harlan’s meltdowns, he doesn’t seem alarmed by it. he just... understands. looking at his scars, sissy wonders if he had been prone to them, too.
one day, she sits down with him in the barn, when carl is asleep, and asks him how he’s so good with harlan, when his own father doesn’t want to be around him. diego goes distant, thoughtful. says he thinks he had a speech problem as a kid - a stammer, maybe. sissy goes hopeful, and says, you don’t stammer at all now. you got better. but diego doesn’t smile. he says, no, he doesn’t, but he doesn’t think that happened out of kindness. he might not remember who he was, but he still feels a rush of fear when words stick in his mouth. he tells her that he wishes he’d had someone to accept him as he was, rather than trying to change him. and suddenly it’s not so strange that he’s so good with harlan.
they talk. a lot. diego thinks that it might be unusual, for him, because it’s hard, but he trusts her. almost like a sister, he thinks. and he’s protective like a brother, too. so when sissy finally admits that she wants to be free of carl, free of the way he looks at harlan, free of the way he bullies her, diego is more than happy to have a... conversation, with carl. it turns out, he’s very good with knives.
anyway, not sure where i’m going with this, but it sure was a Thought
#tua#the umbrella academy#don't get me wrong - i like vanya/sissy#i just kind of think their arcs didn't further their characters much?#i'm already writing a s2 rewrite and don't have time for this but#i just think its neat#viktor hargreeves#diego hargreeves

Chapter 3: The Frankel Footage
Shaking himself out of his shock, Five stood from his seat and hurried after his brother, grabbing onto his arm and stopping his strides. “The hell is wrong with you, Luther? I just told you the world’s gonna end in ten days!”
“Yeah, well, you’re always saying that.” Luther nonchalantly spoke before moving away, but Five intervened yet again.
“And so far, I’ve been right.” He hissed as Luther sighed and shook his head.
“Look, you want to go save the world? Knock yourself out, alright? I already got a job.”
“Wait, you work in this shithole?” The boy furrowed his brows.
“Yeah. Well, my boss owns the place,” Luther only received a nod from his brother, so he clarified. “I’m his body man.”
But this only made Five even more confused. “What’s that? Like, a masseuse or something?”
“Okay, you can make fun all you want, but I take good care of Mr Ruby.”
“Wait, Ruby. The Jack Ruby? The gangster who shot Oswald.”
Despite Five’s concern, Luther proudly smiled a smug smile as he glanced over at his boss. “Yeah. The one and only.”
“Well, it finally happened,” Five sighed. “That gorilla DNA has finally taken over your mind-”
“Hey, watch it, alright? Jack’s a good friend-”
“And you’re Number One. Numero Uno. Remember?”
Luther clenched his jaw and shook his head. “There is no Number One. Not anymore. Not in 1963,” When Five stared at him in disbelief, Luther sighed again. “Look, I’ve been stranded here alone for a year. What did you expect?”
Five scoffed. “I get it, alright? You watched Pogo die, the world exploded, and I marooned your big dumb ass in time. I’m sorry, okay? But I’m asking for your help, Luther. The Umbrella Academy needs you.”
“It doesn’t need me,” He slowly spoke to draw out his words. “It never did.”
“Luther, honey,” The waitress from earlier approached the two. “Jack’s about to lose it on some half-wit. A little help?”
“Ah, shit,” He groaned and began walking away. When Five tried yet again to stop him, he whirled on him, his lips pulled into a thin line. “Listen. You’re the genius who said we should jump, right? You’re the one who got us stuck here. And you’re the one who brought Vanya. So, if there is a doomsday coming, she’s probably the cause. And if I was gonna do something about it, it sure as hell is not gonna be with you. That’s (Y/N)’s job, being dragged around into your messes-”
“I don’t drag her into anything.” Five swallowed, blinking rapidly.
“Yeah? Well, she wasn’t stuck as a thirteen-year-old and constantly worrying about her kids until you showed up. I’m surprised she isn’t sick of you yet.” And with that, he stomped away to his boss. This time, Five let him go, his words sending a pang through his chest as he thought back on it. Grabbing his drink, he sighed and shook his head.
“Dad should’ve left him on the moon…” He muttered, taking a sip of his drink before moving to leave his seat. When he felt his jacket snag on something, he looked down to see an object in his pocket. Taking out the tape, he frowned and turned it over.

Subject: FRANKEL FOOTAGE
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
This world was unfamiliar to (Y/N). She knew she had to have been somewhere in America, but she didn’t know where. The cars, fashion and stores bringing the street she walked to life told her she had to have been in the sixties. But she didn’t want to believe it. Surely Five hadn’t time travelled that far? She had to have been dropped during some type of sixties-theme festival. But the voices suddenly beside her quickly prove her doubts wrong.
“What do we have here?”
“Looks like we’ve got ourselves a lost little colored girl.”
Tensing, (Y/N) continued her way down the sidewalk, slightly speeding up her pace, but the men fell into step beside her with ease, flanking her sides.
“You’re on the wrong side of town, girl.”
“Yeah, we don’t like coons around here.” One of them hissed right in her ear. Her eyes welled up with tears before the other shoved her forward.
“Gon now, get!” He ordered as if she were a dog. She realized that’s how they had seen her. An animal. Nothing more. Tripping on a crack in the sidewalk, she fell to the ground, smacking her face on the concrete. She choked out a sob as the two men cackled. And to make matters even worse, she felt the pitter patter of raindrops start to freeze her skin.
(Y/N) gasped out in shock when the men spit two wads of saliva in her face. She knew she must’ve looked a mess with spit and tears sliding down her cheeks and blood oozing from her nose. She hiccupped on her sobs and began to stand, much too tired from her previous fight with Vanya and literally being dropped from the sky to successfully do so. The men backed her up against a wall and one fisted the front of her vest before a voice called out.
“Take your hands off of my child!” Whipping around, the men were half expecting to find another target, but (Y/N) coughed and sputtered nonsense upon the person her gaze fell upon.
“M-Mom…?”
Before her was Grace, but… she wasn’t robotic in any sense. She could tell by the raw anger etched into her features. She took a brave step forward. “I said. Take your hands. Off my child.”
And that was another thing: her accent. (Y/N) was immediately comforted by the stern southern accent the woman shared with her attackers. It was a voice she never thought she needed. The two looked between Grace and (Y/N) with smirks. “You mean this lil ol’ jigaboo-”
“Is my daughter. Now you let her go before I call the police.”
“Woman, I don’t care if you call the police-”
Grace took it upon herself to step closer and grab the child by her arms, yanking her into her warm embrace. (Y/N) immediately latched onto her, quivering in her hold. The men scoffed and shook their heads, beginning to walk away. “Make sure to keep that thing on a leash if you’re gonna have it out, ma’am.”
“Oh, fuck off.” She growled before turning and walking back in the direction the girl came from. As they walked past the alleyway, Grace took out a handkerchief and began wiping the girl’s face clean of what the raindrops hadn’t already washed away. “It’s alright, hun, they aren’t gonna hurt you anymore.”
“T-Thank you.” (Y/N) sobbed and gently held her nose in pain. Grace crouched in front of her and gently held her face in between her hands.
“Don’t thank me, darlin’, it’s how everyone should be treatin’ you ‘round here… Where are your parents? I could take you to ‘em.”
(Y/N) thought for a long moment, watching as the rain soaked Grace’s hair and clothing. The woman didn’t seem to mind as she watched the girl before her swallowing thickly. (Y/N) skimmed over her current choices. She didn’t have any choice.
“I don’t have parents. I-I don’t remember them…”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“I’m tellin’ you, Reggie, she’s highly intelligent for a child her age.” Grace proudly presented (Y/N) to the man she had grown fond of over their time working together. (Y/N), however, was frozen in her spot. Sir Reginald Hargreeves. The man whose death she had wished upon for years, whose death had finally graced her existence, was back in her life. She flinched at the disapproving look on his face, much too acquainted with it by this point in her life. “And she’s very respectful. Talented, too, this girl can speak several languages.”
“You seem rather fond of this child.” The man observed as Grace squeezed her into her side.
“She’s my pride and joy.”
“And you cannot remember anything of your past, child?”
“N-No,” (Y/N) shook her head and stared down. “Not a lot. J-Just my name and birthday.”
Reginald hummed and stared her down with an unreadable expression. When she met his eyes again, he was crouched down to her level, his monocle clutched in his fist. “(Y/N), was it?”
“Yes.”
“It would be an honor to have your presence within my home, along with your mother.”
“O-Oh, that’s okay-”
“I insist. Besides, you have been living with her for almost half a year, correct? It is highly unlikely that she will share a home without you.”
“He’s right about that, hun,” (Y/N) glanced up at Grace, who was smiling warmly at her. “I’m not leavin’ you.”
(Y/N) could have cried.
And she did.
One year later, (Y/N) had been living quite the comfortable life with Grace and Reginald. She had been introduced to the ape, Pogo, for the second time since Grace first started working with him. As much as she loved being around the chimp, it brought back so many memories. She almost felt silly, looking after him sometimes knowing he had done the same for her in the original timeline.
Her relationship with Reginald was nothing she ever expected. He was gentle, well as gentle as Reginald Hargreeves could get, he cared for her, spoiled her, even. She wouldn’t have to ask for anything half the time. If he were to overhear a conversation between her and Grace about a dress she oh-so wanted, it would suddenly be laid out on her bed the next day. She usually had a say in dinner meals every Thursday and Sunday and Reginald listened intently whenever she would voice any discomfort or concerns with her living conditions. (Y/N) never had a real father, but she assumed this is what it was like to have one. She never wanted to let go of it.
For her birthday in 1963, she was surprised that he had actually gotten her a present. As she entered the parlor, she was met with the tiniest bark and an even tinier golden retriever, bounding up to her. She gasped and stopped low, letting him jump into her arms. She let him lick her face and giggled in the joy it brought her.
“Your mother said you would like it. Though I would never allow dogs in my house, I have come to understand that there are rules I must bend for you, my child.”
(Y/N) turned to her father. Yes, father. Reginald, also growing quite fond of their father-daughter bond formed between them, decided to adopt the girl. As much as his beliefs and his deep distaste for children protested. There was just something about this child. Or perhaps it was Grace’s insisting, reassuring him that he would make a wonderful father. (Y/N) was very hesitant at first for her own reasons she never shared, but eventually came around to the idea of being his daughter again.
This was the same Reginald Hargreeves who locked her in a dark room for five days straight, but also an entirely different man. Perhaps it was her fascination with the differences, or maybe she just wanted a real father for once.
“Thank you, Dad.” She softly smiled, the man nodding in response.
“But this is your pet, (Y/N). It is your responsibility. I will not find it in my study, in my bedroom, you are to train it yourself-”
“Can you-”
“And no, I will not help you pick out its name.”
The girl softly groaned and looked back down at her new puppy. Looking into its eyes, she smiled softly at a distant memory as a small child.
“Welcome to the family, Mr Pennycrumb.”
-------------------------------------------------
(Y/N) groaned when she felt the sunbeams of the early morning sunrise hit her eyelids, coloring her black vision with the stinging fire of orange. Rolling onto her other side, she stretched her blanket over her head. They were yanked away the next second, causing a whine to leave her lips. “Mom… Five more minutes.”
“I let you sleep in long enough, hun, it’s time to get up. You have a date with Preston this afternoon.” Grace gently pulled her daughter to sit up, giggling quietly at her look of disgust.
“Preston? Seriously?”
“Yes, seriously, let’s get goin’.” Grace patted her leg and walked to her door, waiting patiently. (Y/N) sighed and rubbed her face, letting her feet slide into her slippers. As they descended the stairs to the kitchen for breakfast, Reginald could hear his daughter’s sleepy complaining from his place at the table.
Setting his utensils down, he turned his head in their direction. “My child, how many times throughout each week must we have to repeat this conversation?”
“Until it starts making sense.” (Y/N) stepped into the dining room, now in her robe, and crossed her arms over her chest. Reginald sighed and stood from his chair at the table.
“You are one of my greatest accomplishments,” He began towards her. “There is no doubt in my mind that you would make a fine successor. I do not believe you will need a husband. In fact, you would be better off without another individual holding you back from what you are truly capable of.”
“But?” She raised a brow.
“But… I have grown to know you more than I expected… and I know that you would need someone to help manage your finances you inherit once I am gone. Preston is a fine young man who was born into this life, made into this life. He will take good care of you.”
(Y/N) knew there was only one person in this world who would truly take good care of her. But he wasn’t here, and she needed to play the part as the amnesiac adopted daughter, so she huffed and nodded. “Fine… I’ll go…”
“Thank you-”
“But only if Mr Pennycrumb can go, too.”
“Very well, but you will not be gifted another animal if you lose it.”
The outing wasn’t entirely bad. (Y/N) didn’t mind the picnic or the art museum, it was the company that made her blood boil. Preston is anything she would have expected out of him. This had been their seventh date, tenth of the ones he planned. (Y/N) sought out any opportunity she could to cancel on him to save herself from the unbearable three hours she would have to spend with the kid. He was arrogant, smug, selfish, narcissistic, and overbearing. Of course, this was not the Preston he presented to her parents. No, to them, Preston was ‘a fine man with a bright future ahead of him’, or as Grace would put it, ‘a delight to have around’. He laughed like a drunk, talked like a husband, and smelled like a man. All at the age of fifteen. (Y/N) had to remind herself on several occasions that she was mentally the older out of the two and to not stoop to his level when he got under her skin.
“Don’t you think, (Y/N)?” The voice brought her attention back to the boy beside her. She looked up from the grass they had been strolling through. When she hummed in question, he amusedly scoffed and side-step closer to her. “Never mind. I should have known you wouldn’t have been interested in politics.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” The girl raised a brow. At her confusion, he laughed and gently tapped the side of his head.
“You’ve always got that head of yours in the clouds. Or turned behind you- like right now.”
(Y/N) turned her head away from where she had been looking over her shoulder. “What? Sorry, Preston, I’m a little preoccupied today.”
“With what, exactly? You don’t seem to be the type of girl to have very many issues. Nothing to worry about.”
“And you wonder why I don’t listen to you.” She sighed as her puppy ran in between her legs, rolling in the grass once he was a few paces in front of them. Preston frowned in distaste and shook his head.
“You should really keep that thing on a leash, sweetheart.”
She inhaled deeply and closed her eyes, clenching her teeth as she folded her hands behind her back. “Really now?”
“Really. You know, I’m not very fond of dogs, so I’m not sure how it’ll work out once we’re married. I think we should get one after we have kids, you know? Just so the kids could grow up with it.”
(Y/N) quickly turned her head to the left, pointing out across the street. “Preston, would you look at that?”
“Look at what?” He gullibly looked in the direction, (Y/N) quickly checking the area before almost silently singing her tune. From her shadow, her clone formed and robotically walked behind the two. She quickly switched spots with it and ordered the clone to walk with Preston before scooping her puppy into her arms and rushing off in the opposite direction. Once she was behind a diner far away from their date location, she let out a sigh and gently patted her dog on the head.
“Were you sick of it, too?” She chuckled. Resting the back of her head against the brick wall she leaned on, she let out a slow breath and began to relax. The sound of guns cocking had her head snapping up so fast, she swore she could have dislocated it. Just down the end of the line of stores were three white-haired men, one in a milkman uniform, training their guns on her. (Y/N) didn’t waste a second tucking her dog in front of her and spinning around, charging down the opposite direction as bullets whizzed past her. She dodged them the best she could, jumping a few feet in the air at the ones that threatened to take their place in her feet. It was like a dance; the twisting, spinning and jumping, and she was to perform this dance until one of those bullets killed her if she didn’t find a way out soon. Sliding to the side of a clothing store for cover, she gently shushed her pet as she caught her breath.
The three sets of footsteps eventually found their destination and rounded the corner with skilled quickness, shooting at the girl until she was nothing more than a bloodied corpse on the ground, bullet holes lodged in almost every inch of her body. The three men nodded to each other and turned around, making their way out from behind the stores.
(Y/N) had already been down the street from her house by the time her attackers found the clone in her place. She couldn’t have been bothered to check herself for any wounds, too worried about Mr Pennycrumb’s potential bullet wounds. But the pup was perfectly, happily nuzzling into her arms and wagging his tail. This left (Y/N) to ponder.
Who the hell were those men?
-------------------------------------------------
“Is it on?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean, you don’t know? There’s an ‘on’ button. Just- There’s something over- that jigga-ma-thing, whatever.”
“I hit the jigga-ma-thing!”
“Okay, well, just- Give it to me. I know how to do this.”
“Alright, here, here. Hurry up.”
“Okay, alright, let’s see…”
Lila didn’t look up from her task of painting poor Elliott’s toenails, his bindings he received after threatening the trio with a gun preventing him from moving too much. Which was beneficial to her, as it kept her from ruining the paint job. She softly smiled as she listened to the argument between the elderly couple on the film Five and Diego were intently watching. “They’re so cute,” She commented. “I love old couples. I’m always so proud of them for not murdering each other.”
Ignoring her, Diego turned to his brother from his seat on Elliott’s counter. “Why are we watching this?”
“Shush.” Five replied, eyes trained on the film before him, searching for any clue to the approaching apocalypse, brows furrowed in concentration.
“Yeah, I… I’m Dan Frankel. And…”
“I’m Edna Frankel.”
“...Edna Frankel. We are in Dallas, Texas, to see the president. Today’s date is November 22, 1963.”
Five nodded as everyone’s attention was brought to the projected screen before them.
“That’s six days from now.” Lila spoke as Elliott thrashed about more against his bindings. Diego sat forward in interest.
“Holy shit. This is it. The grassy knoll. Kennedy’s about to get shot. How do you have this?”
“Hazel died to get me this footage,” Five answered. “It must be the key to stopping doomsday.”
“Hazel…?” Diego frowned, remembering the man he spent hours searching for and planning to kill to avenge the death of Eudora Patch.
“Long story.”
“What’s doomsday?” Lila looked up at the boy.
“Longer story.”
“What exactly did he say to you?” Diego asked as Lila turned her head back to the film.
Five shrugged. “Well, he was killed before he could explain. But whatever he wanted us to see, it’s on this film.”
“This is very exciting.” The old man smiled before the sound of gunshots and screaming could be heard, the camera moving around in blurs due to the shock of the old woman filming.
“Oh, my god!”
“Oswald…” Diego whispered, setting his knife down as Five leaned in closer.
“The president!”
When the camera was steadied to record across the street, Five and Diego both stiffened in their spots at what their eyes caught. “Oh, no…” Five breathed and moved behind the projector, rewinding the film and scooting the cart backwards to zoom in closer. The room was silent as Diego stood to his feet and Five rounded the cart before standing beside his brother, directly in front of the film. “This can’t be…”
“Okay, you gonna fill me in now, boys?” Lila glanced between the two. “What the hell is this shit we’re watching?”
But she was ignored yet again.
“No, that’s impossible…”
“Clearly, it’s not.”
“What… What is it?” Elliott muffled past the gag in his mouth.
A beat of silence went by before the two Hargreeves whispered in unison,
“Dad.”

The Hargreeves + Love Languages
Not technically for Valentine’s Day, but the timing lines up pretty well! Here are my theories for the Hargreeves and their primary love languages. 💕
Luther: Words of Affirmation
“Sometimes these things just take time.”
Luther both expresses and seems happiest receiving affection through words of affirmation, which makes a lot of sense for him, given how Reginald used the faintest scraps of praise to earn his undying loyalty for years (the only positive about this man being back is that now the kiddos get a chance to kill him themselves). We see it in how he interacts with his siblings. When Allison confesses how lost and alone she feels after losing Claire, he gently encourages her. When he and Vanya begin to mend their relationship he instantly becomes her #1 hype man (we love to see it). Even Elliot! We also see how even the smallest encouragements from other people clearly mean so much to him, whether it’s his siblings, or, you know, Jack Ruby.
Diego: Acts of Service
“I know what it’s like to love dangerous people.”
Ah, Diego “I have to save everyone, wtf is self care?” Hargreeves. Not only are acts of service the primary way he shows affection, they are also pretty much the only way he knows how to. Like, Diego will tie Klaus to a chair to help him get sober, and attack a bunch of angry vets for him, but when he tries to talk he ends up wistfully recalling the time Klaus got his mouth wired shut. He gets incredibly attached to people who help him, even if they have ulterior motives for doing so (read: Lila and to some extent Herb), and goes to ridiculous lengths to help them in return (literally throwing himself in front of a huge onslaught of bullets to protect Five). Which makes sense, considering his relationship with Grace really developed because she was willing to help him work on his speech when no one else would.
Allison: Receiving Gifts
“I’m the luckiest man in all of Dallas.”
“Is that right?”
Okay, first of all, Allison Hargreeves is 100% the kind of person to pick up little gifts for Claire literally every time she’s out of town. We see the two people in the series that know her best, Luther (who’s attachment I’m deciding to interpret as 100% familial... don’t ruin this for me) and Raymond, both give her gifts to show her how loved she is. Ray picks up a book for her, and she just about melts on the spot. She kept the necklace Luther gave her for years. We also see her giving gifts as a form of affection, from using her powers to get Ray a nice suit, to the “feast” she sneaks in for her and Luther as children. It makes a ton of sense for her as a character, too. I think on some level, Allison fears that none of her relationships are as real as she wants them to be, so having someone say “I was somewhere else and thought of you, here is something that it never occurred to you to ask for” means so much to her in proving that she is loved in return as fiercely as she loves.
Klaus: Quality Time
“Logging in some quality bro time before the end of the world.”
We see multiple instances where Klaus is seeking out time with his family as a way of expressing affection. He leaps at any opportunity to accompany Five on a mission, and the aforementioned incident with Diego. He takes Allison and Vanya for tacos to spend time with them. He just wants to spend time with his family, y’all. It’s honestly kind of adorable. It’s how people show affection to him, too. Diego drives him places, and we see when Klaus is at a low point, he takes special care to come back in and check on him. It also makes sense for reasons of sad, because we know that Klaus is never really alone, and the constant presence of ghosts is dulled by spending time in other people’s company. Because of this, he associates spending time with the people he’s close to as being both comfortable and safe.
Five: Acts of Service
“Everything I’ve done, I’ve done for my family.”
This little gremlin really went out and said “I’m going to save the whole entire world for my family,” like, honey. Doing stuff for people is the primary way he shows affection. He’s constantly fighting to save his family, and carries Dolores around constantly. He shows up when Vanya asks for help. We also see it in the way he responds to other people. Like, Hazel does one nice thing for him and he’s like “oh, we’re friends now.” Vanya makes him sandwiches to show him that he’s being taken care of. Reginald actually gives him legitimate advice for once. Donut shop guy (R.I.P) buys him his coffee. That small smile he gets in the elevator when they all show up to talk to Reginald together and he sees that they actually do care. Five has been doing everything by himself for so long, and having someone else step in, even if he won’t ever admit it, means the world.
Ben: Physical Touch
“Can you hug me as I go?”
Ben was a little harder because we don’t really see him interact with that many people other than Klaus, but he really made it his mission to hug all of them, so it kind of works. The moment with Vanya, the hug with Diego, even how he just wants to occupy the same space was Jill as soon as he can, Ben just really wants physical contact with the people he cares about. The first thing he does when he realizes he can touch things is play patty cake with Klaus. Which makes the fact that he spent 20+ years incorporeal and unable to touch anyone... kind of devastating actually. It also makes sense because we know that Ben hates the destructive capabilities of the Horror, and the fact that someone is okay with being physically close to him means that they trust him and aren’t afraid.
Vanya: Words of Affirmation
“You’re plenty elegant.”
All things considered, it makes a lot of sense that words of affirmation would be the way Vanya feels most loved, most seen. Reginald Hargreeves verbally dismissed her whenever he had the opportunity, and we see her clinging to anyone who says nice things about her. Leonard talks her up constantly, and she falls for him instantly. In a much nicer (and more genuine) way, Sissy tells her frequently that she’s valuable, that she’s wanted. Vanya talks herself down a lot, and Sissy will not hear it, lol. We also see it in the way she reached out to other people! She’s so encouraging and supportive of Sissy. In a beauty parlor, she just gushes to both Klaus and Allison, “this family’s amazing” even though they’ve kind of just exposed themselves as the trainwrecks they are. It’s cute af.

This is my very first post, so I hope I do good! Please give me some feedback, I would love to hear it.
The Umbrella Academy Life Swap:
The Hargreaves switch lives instead of powers.
• Ben ran away at the age of 13 and got lost in the dimension inside his stomach, the Handler eventually finds him and recruits him to the Commission. He works as a super powered agent that saves his victims from his sadistic partners, Hazel and Cha-Cha. Ben doesn’t come back in a 13 year old body like Five, he’s the same age as his siblings, and Ben does know about the apocalypse and has the eye. And unlike Five, Ben actually tells his siblings about the apocalypse and how he was a super powered assassin that acted as the kidnapper and lookout. When the Hargreaves were 13, Ben had tried to talk to Five out of time traveling because logically, he may not know where he would end up, but Five wouldn’t listen to him and started arguing with him. The fighting got so loud that Vanya and Klaus eventually got pulled into the argument as well and it turned into a fistfight with all 4 of them. All of them ended up with scratches and bruises on their faces, a few chunks of their hair missing, and cleaning the mansion floors and ceilings from top to bottom and every single room without using their powers as a punishment for fighting by Reginald. At 2 am, Ben woke up after a nightmare and felt bad about getting Vanya and Klaus into trouble when they didn’t even started the fight in the first place and tried to go to their rooms to apologize, but he never did because the Horror became restless and angry that it didn’t get anything to eat and wanted to make Ben feel how trapped they felt when Reginald always had them kill people, so Ben’s tentacles grabbed him and opened the portal to their world, which was the apocalypse, and trapped him there for 10 years until the Handler came and recruited him and was never seen after that day again. Because of Ben’s disappearance, Vanya and Klaus blamed Five and his ambition for time travel since it was him who argued with Ben in the first place and Five had never forgotten it. Ben hopes that Klaus and Vanya would forgive Five in time. Ben read Klaus’s book about what happened to his family when he disappeared, he read about Luther running away to Dallas to forget about the Umbrella Academy, about Diego staying at the Academy to keep fighting crime, about Allison’s death and how she’s now mute, how Klaus is trying to get sober and stabling himself, how Five became a professor at a prestigious university and a vigilante, and how Vanya took a dark path into alcoholism.
• Five became a lowly-paid physics professor at community college after he was fired for punching a colleague at prestigious university and he’s also a vigilante, but his fiancé Delores doesn’t like it though. Five met Delores at a professor’s conference in Canada where she was presenting her findings on the science of gems and geodes since she’s a mineralogy professor (someone who teaches the study of rocks and crystals) and where he was discussing the possibility of time travel. Those two immediately hit it off and are now engaged, Five proposed to her by using different types of gems to spell it out. Five uses his powers of teleportation to be a mysterious assassin and hero.
• Klaus is a dancer at a local theater and he has somewhat control over his powers, but if the ghosts get too loud, he smokes cigarettes instead of weed so he wouldn’t be high at a recital. He became friends with Leonard Peabody aka Harold Jenkins when Klaus was 23 after his family abandoned him for writing an auto-biography about him having a power that traumatizes him and what the Umbrella Academy was really like behind the scenes, it’s called “The Ghosts Inside the Umbrella Academy: the life of Klaus Hargreaves”. Harold makes him more isolated by threatening to kill himself and haunting Klaus for the rest of his life if Klaus tries to leave him. Since Klaus never had someone ,besides Ben, care for him and give him a home and food since he was living at a homeless shelter when he met Leonard, Klaus thinks that this type of friendship is normal and doesn’t think twice about it. In his book, Klaus portrays his remaining siblings as people who knew about his drug abuse, but didn’t do anything about it; he portrayed Luther as a hotheaded daddy’s boy who was treated like the Golden child, Diego as a momma’s boy with daddy issues always trying to compete with Luther for everything, Allison as his favorite sister who was taken too soon, who’s death was the final straw that tore apart their family, and who acts as a silent ghost mother since she’s mute (no one believes him that he can see her though), he portrays Five as the cause of Ben’s disappearance and as a heartless gremlin who doesn’t care about his siblings enough to see that his siblings are hurting and have real problems of their own, he portrays Ben as his kind-hearted and favorite brother who was the glue that hold their family together and who’s disappearance drove a wedge between the family, and he portrays Vanya as his ordinary violin playing sister that desperately wanted to belong with their family in any way she could, but turned to alcohol when she learned that her dream of being in the Umbrella Academy was crushed by Reginald and who had the easy life of not being exploited by their father for her powers like he was. Vanya actually confronted him about her portrayal in the book and they said some things that they shouldn’t have, but they eventually forgave each other and Vanya moved in with him and Leonard a month later. Klaus didn’t mind that Vanya and Leonard were dating, but saw a striking difference between Vanya and Leonard’s relationship and Vanya and Sissy’s relationship when Vanya came back from the 60s. With Leonard, Vanya was walking on eggshells and isolated from her brothers and couldn’t be herself around him, but with Sissy, Klaus saw that Vanya was happier and could be herself around Sissy and loves Harlan like her own son. Klaus was the one to kill Leonard with his powers by having Allison choke him to death when he badly hurt Harlan with a gun and tried to drown Sissy.
• Allison dies at the age of 17 when her throat was slit by a serial killer on a mission and now acts like Klaus’s mother by always keeping him sober enough to conjure her and giving him healthy advice, but ultimately going along with almost every crazy idea Klaus has. Since she has a slit throat she can’t talk, but she does sign language instead and like Ben, she ages like Klaus, but still wears the same outfit she was buried in: a yellow and green striped dress with a blue flora printed jacket with red heels and a pair of black leggings. She HATES Leonard Peabody because he’s manipulating Klaus into isolation from their family and she tries to get Klaus out of their toxic friendship, but Klaus always denies Leonard’s abuse. She misses her siblings so much that she’s deeply hurt that she had ignored their problems for so long.
• Diego stayed at the Umbrella Academy because he didn’t know how to be anything else but a hero, he also didn’t want to Mom behind, so he began reading and writing code to free Grace from her restrictive rules that Reginald put on her, but after his accident that had him have scars all over his body and face to the point where he lost his left eye and his face is almost beyond recognition, Diego left the Academy when he realized that there was no point in staying and became a recluse in his good friend, Eudora’s house. Unlike Luther, Diego doesn’t have the monkey body because I just couldn’t see that type of body build on David Castaneda. Diego met Eudora at a local boxing gym, Eudora was impressed Diego’s fight skilled and was shocked to know that he was Diego “The Kraken” Hargreaves because Reginald told the whole world including their city and Luther, Klaus, Five, and Vanya that Diego died in an explosion a year ago when he had his accident. Diego ,of course, was pissed that his own father told everyone and his siblings that he was dead instead of saying that he survived the mission and was just scarred for the rest of his life, but he wasn’t surprised that Reginald did that to keep up his reputation. Him and Eudora immediately became fast friends and roommates at her house since Diego had nowhere to go when he left the Academy 6 months ago and was living at an run-down and moldy apartment. They actually tried dating at one point, but because of their conflicted personalities, they decided to just stay friends and roommates.
• 3 months after Allison’s funeral, Luther ran away to escape his father’s tight gripped and cold stare and the house that reminded him of his lovely yet dead Allison when he was 18 years old. He ended up in Dallas, Texas where he became a famous boxer named King Kong since he’s so huge and muscular, met and married a successful TV salesman named Elliott Gussman, and they adopted an African American baby girl who they named Claire Allison Gussman. Luther decided to take Elliott’s last name ,even though it was Luther who proposed to him, to cut his ties off from the Umbrella Academy and the man who turned 6 children into soldiers and who blamed the death of an innocent 17 year old girl that happened to be his adopted daughter on his 4 sons and 1 daughter instead of the person who killed her in the first place. Luther and Elliott had a happy marriage for 3 years until Klaus’s book came out that exposed the secrets of Luther’s past and made him into a hotheaded bully with daddy issues who followed Reginald around like a eager puppy trying to get a reward and a coward ran away from his problems instead of facing them. Elliott was furious at Luther because when Luther came to Dallas he lied about being from a mob family that did all types of shady businesses and that he ran away because his “family” couldn’t understand and accept him being bisexual instead of telling him truth about his abusive father who raised them to be child soldiers, how his brother Diego would always tried to be better than him to their father’s approval, how his brother Five was too smart for his own good, how he loved his sister Allison more than he should, how he tried to forget about Ben’s disappearance, how he ignored Klaus’s drug abuse, and how he denied Vanya’s problem with alcohol for so long. When Elliott read Klaus’s book about what Luther did and who he was, Elliott immediately started arguing with him about his true identity. Luther tried to deny it, but couldn’t because he loves Elliott too much to even hurt him in a way. Elliott actually threatened to separate from Luther when their arguments gotten too much, but he didn’t and instead drove Luther and him to see a marriage counselor so that they could actually talk to each other instead of just arguing. Luther and Elliott eventually made up, but because of the book, Luther is the one that’s more pissed about it and at Klaus for almost making Elliott lose his marriage to him. Btw, Claire is 6 years old in 2019 and was adopted as a baby in 2013 by the Gussman family when Luther was 24 and Elliott was 30, a year after Klaus’s book was published.
• Vanya was introduced to alcohol at 13 years old when Five and Klaus were drinking 2 cases of beer that Five stole, Klaus persuaded her to take a sip of his beer and she hasn’t stop drinking since. Besides the violin and her pills, alcohol was the thing that defined Vanya and her personality. Vanya thought that no one would care about what happened to her since she was so ordinary and isolated that she dumped all of her pills in the garbage disposal and drinks her problems away. With her new coping mechanism, Vanya’s personality changed from quiet and meek to sarcastic and drunk. Five and Vanya left the Academy for college together, but ended up separated by the time they were 20 because Vanya kept drinking her tutition away. By the age of 22, Vanya ended up being homeless because she got kicked out of her apartment for not paying her rent with the money she used to buy alcohol. She still plays her violin, but only for cash instead of at The Icarus Theatre. She also read Klaus’s book and was upset about her portrayal as his alcoholic sister who had an easy life of being ordinary and never going on missions because she doesn’t have a power that can’t be turned off willingly or that can kill somebody; she cried and drank her misery away for 3 weeks until she confronted Klaus about the book, they both admittedly said things that they regretted, but ended up apologizing to each other in the end. She also meets and dates Leonard like in the show and instead of Allison finding the truth about Leonard, it’s Five and Delores who both tried to convince Klaus and Vanya that Leonard is a snake, but they both denied it. Vanya ends up living with Klaus and Leonard when her and Klaus made up when she’s 23. In my first draft I made it Five and Delores that Vanya ended up rooming with, but I wanted to make Vanya and Klaus isolated further by Leonard manipulating both of them. When the house is attacked by Hazel and Cha-Cha, Vanya is the one that’s kidnapped and tortured by them for 2 days and is rescued by Eudora who arrives with back up this time, but is injured in the spine by Cha-Cha. Vanya takes the briefcase and time travels to October 12, 1963 where she ends up falling in love with a woman named Sissy Cooper, a widowed housewife who accidentally ran Vanya over with her car, and becoming a nanny/second mother to Sissy’s 5 year old autistic son named Harlan. Vanya stayed with them until 1966 when a neighbor reported their “unholy” relationship to the police, so to keep them safe Vanya used the briefcase to go back to 2019 with Sissy and Harlan.
—When Vanya gets back to 2019 with Sissy and Harlan, no one believes her story except for Klaus, who promises to her relationship with Sissy a secret from Leonard, and Ben, who was the only one that was worried about her whereabouts in the first place besides Klaus. Vanya tries to become sober for the sake of Harlan not being afraid of her when she gets drunk and for Sissy and her’s relationship since her late husband was an abusive alcoholic, instead of conjuring the one she loves’s ghost like Klaus did in the show. When Vanya was dating Leonard, he would constantly have her and Klaus practice their music and dance at 12am-6am to train them more and if one of them mess up, he’ll have them locked up in a dark and tiny closet with only one dimly lit lightbulb and they would have to balance on a stool on one leg for the duration of their training. Leonard would also take his anger out on Klaus and Vanya if he had a bad day at his shop, which would leave Klaus with bruises on his arms and a black eye and Vanya with scratches on her back and bruises on her neck. (Trigger Warning for those who can’t handle stories with domestic violence) When the 3 of them were 27, Leonard gotten pissed at how independent and successful Klaus and Vanya were getting in their lives by Klaus getting paid more from his dance recitals and Vanya going to AA meetings more to the point of being sober for 3 weeks that he took his frustrations about losing his control out on them by punching and slapping Klaus and choking and scratching Vanya, but thankfully a neighbor called the police after hearing their screams and Klaus and Vanya were taken to the hospital and Leonard was arrested, but unfortunately Klaus and Vanya bailed Leonard out due to dropping charges against him as an apologize.
Here are the things that I changed
• Klaus and Vanya both cause the apocalypse by combining their powers at Klaus’s dance recital with Vanya’s violin because Leonard isolated them from everyone, manipulated them to the point of denying the abuse he put them through, and because of him trying to kill Sissy and Harlan for taking Vanya away from him.
• Five and Delores tries to explain to Vanya and Klaus that Leonard only liked them to get revenge on the Umbrella Academy and it was him that kidnapped Sissy and Harlan to get them to come back to him, but Five gets stabbed in the stomach by Klaus’s new found telekinesis and Vanya makes Five and Delores’s apartment collapsed after knocking Delores out. When the apartment collapses, Allison , who’s coperal at the moment, immediately grabs both a bleeding Five and an unconscious Delores and saves them from death and takes them to the Academy to be treated by Grace. Delores unfortunately loses her right arm to a huge piece of shrapnel lodged into it that’s cutting the circulation.
• When Ben goes to the apocalypse for the first time, he finds Luther with the eye clutched in his hand, Diego wrapped in black bandages holding a woman with a long black ponytail (Eudora), Five in an Armani suit with his eyes opened, and a red headed woman in a polka dotted blouse and a black skirt holding one of Five’s hand (Delores). All of them are dead and Ben finds out that they’re his brothers by the faded black umbrella tattoo on Luther’s wrist when Ben was inspecting the bodies. The bodies that Ben couldn’t find were Allison, Vanya, and Klaus’s, but after learning about Allison’s death from Klaus’s book, Ben kept looking for Vanya and Klaus.
• Vanya gets her burst of powers when Harlan almost drown in the summer of ‘64 in the lake 10 miles away from the farm. Harlan was playing with a beach ball when it got away from him and he tried to get it while Vanya and Sissy were cuddling in the sand and a wave pulled him under the water. Sissy started crying and panicking when Vanya couldn’t get Harlan to the surface, but after a minute of silence she was shocked and relieved to see Vanya holding Harlan in her arms while she’s floating in the lake with glowing white eyes. As soon as they get to shore, Vanya gives Harlan cpr which transfers her newly found powers to him like in the canon.
• Diego doesn’t show himself to his siblings until episode 3 when Hazel and Cha-Cha attack the house because everyone thinks he’s dead and he’s a recluse. He finds out about the attack from Grace (mom) when she calls him from her bedroom phone since they talk every day so that he can know what’s going on and because of these calls, Diego knows about Ben being back, how the funeral went, and how much each of his siblings changed over the years.
• In episode 1, since the siblings’ lives are switched around, the way they found out that Reginald died is slightly different from canon. Luther finds out from the press badgering him after he won a fight, Diego finds out from Eudora when she comes home after work and turns on the Tv in a flash, Klaus finds out during rehearsal on the radio that him and his group are listening to to practice the recital while Allison is dancing in the shadows behind him when the news suddenly comes on, Five finds out from his phone on social media when one of his students sent him the news link after Five teleports to his apartment after saving a 12 year old boy from being abducted by a creep and almost killing said creep by beating him senseless, and Vanya finds out from a bar Tv when she and Leonard are on a date. She immediately calls Klaus who was immediately going to call her to tell her the same thing when he was done rehearsals.
• Just to clarify, since Vanya spent 3 years with Sissy and Harlan in Dallas from 1963-1966, she is 33 years old and Harlan is 8 years old because he was 5 when he and his mom met Vanya. Even though Vanya spent 3 years in the ‘60s, she was only gone for 2 days with Klaus, Five, Delores, Ben, and Leonard searching for her.
• When the Hargreeves all come back for the funeral, the introduction of them to each other are very different. Diego doesn’t show up to the funeral to keep up the reputation of him being dead. Vanya and Klaus show up together, but immediately split up when Vanya goes straight to the bar making drinks for her and her brothers (mostly for her though) and Klaus goes to his old room to reminisce about his past. Five checks their father’s room and office for evidence of something other than a heart attack, he is the one that thinks that Reginald was murdered by someone, and he also greets Vanya and Klaus with Delores who went with him to meet his family. Luther is trying to get through the funeral as possible by almost avoiding his siblings, but that backfires when Five calls a family meeting to talk about their father’s death and Luther sees a tipsy Vanya holding a mix of vodka and rum, Klaus talking to Delores who is laughing at a funny story Klaus is telling, and Five lecturing the remaining siblings on how their father might’ve been murdered.
• Eudora is more present in the show since she survives the gunshot wound in her spine by Cha-Cha, but she ends up being paralyzed from the waist down in a wheelchair. She helps Five with discovering how Reginald actually died and Diego with stepping out into the world and seeing his family for the first time in years. Like in canon, she is the first one to find Vanya at the motel after finding the message that Hazel and Cha-Cha left on the van when they burned down the prosthetic factory after they got drunk off of Vanya’s “special lemonade” which is just lemonade mixed with wine and vodka. Unlike in the show, Delores and Ben go with Eudora as back up in case something goes wrong and it does end up going wrong with Cha-Cha and Eudora having a shoot out with each other in the parking lot that ultimately ends up Eudora becoming paralyzed by Cha-Cha’s bullet ricocheting off a lamppost and lodging into Eudora’s spine with her laser gunand Ben wrestling with his former partner Hazel in the motel room while Vanya is escaping through the vent with the briefcase in her arms and Delores in tow.
Ben breaks Hazel’s wrist and almost beats him to a bloody pulp for kidnapping Vanya, but he stops when he hears Eudora’s screams from outside and sees her on the ground behind her car and he immediately drives her to the hospital while Hazel and Cha-Cha get away before the police show up. Delores and Vanya get on a nearby bus to escape the chaos and they talk about what’s going on in their lives and Delores talks about how Leonard treats Klaus when they’re alone, but Vanya denies any abuse and opens the briefcase. The last thing Vanya hears is Delores screaming.
• The episode “The Day that Wasn’t” doesn’t exist in my AU and is instead replaced with an episode called “Welcome to the 60’s” where Five interrogates Sissy and Harlan about the past while working on the beat up briefcase to learn more about how to time travel. Eudora and Diego talk about how their long time friendship has become into a sibling relationship and about how Diego can reconnect with his siblings again. Luther and Delores discuss how they both want a normal and ordinary life with their husband and fiancé respectively, but fail to see that things can never go back to way they were. Ben goes off on his own to find the truth about Leonard Peabody, but finds himself at Griddy’s where he sees Hazel kissing Agnes and talks to them about his problems. Agnes gives Ben advice about how he can reconcile with his family by actually giving them time to process him being a time traveling assassin and him telling Five to not feel guilty about causing a rift between him and Vanya and Klaus because it wasn’t Five’s fault that Ben “ran away”.
I’ll continue the rest of the story when I have the time. Right now I just want to post this.

Time and Chase
Pairing: Five Hargreeves x Fem! OC
Author's Note: Hello and welcome. This is a major throwback but we are kicking off my TUA series of fics all the way from season one so that this story actually makes sense. Or about as much sense as it can be. I will be posting daily. *Please note that I am well aware that Elliot Page portrays Viktor, but due to season one being before his transition, that is why his character is still Vanya. I am not deadnaming him and I sincerely hope I don't come across as such. I will transition when I write season three.*
Warnings: mentions of blood, injuries, cursing, and violence.

~ * ~
On the first day of October, 1989, forty-three women around the world simultaneously gave birth. None of the women showed any prior signs of pregnancy. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and playboy adventurer, made it his personal mission to find and adopt as many of these children as possible.
He got seven of them.
~ * ~
The car screeched and lurched in front of the Academy. Luther got out with Allison in his arms and Five had Karina.
"Come on! Let's go!" Five told his siblings.
"I don't think she's breathing," Luther panicked as they all ran inside the house.
"If we don't get her upstairs, she'll die," Klaus added.
Diego went to retrieve Grace and Pogo while the others burst into the infirmary. The three joined them as Luther put Allison on one examination table and Five put Karina on another.
"She's suffered a severe laceration to her larynx," Grace examined Allison and then checked Karina. "She has a concussion and a laceration to her shoulder." She went to Allison's side again. "One of you will need to give blood to Allison. Luckily Karina hasn't suffered as much loss."
"I will," all the boys answered in unison.
"I will," Luther spoke. "I'm doing it. For Allison."
"I've got Rina if she does end up needing it," Five was applying pressure to her shoulder.
"I'm afraid that's not possible, dear boys," Pogo stepped forward, eyeing Luther first. "Your blood is more compatible with mine." He looked at Five. "And your blood type wouldn't be compatible with Mrs. Hargreeves, I am afraid."
Grace began picking up surgical tools to prepare for the procedure on Allison first.
"Hey, don't sweat it. I…I got this, big guy. I…I love needles," Klaus volunteered casually. He went over to Grace with his arm out and he patted it. "And of course I'll save my sweetest, bestest sister-in-law if the occasion arises."
"Master Klaus," Pogo cut in. "Your blood is…? How shall I say this? Too polluted."
"Move," Diego switched with Klaus.
"Yeah," Luther nodded.
Five took a breath. "Go on."
"I'll do it for both of them," Diego took one look at the needle Grace had before he whimpered and his eyes rolled up to the back of his head as he fainted.
"Whoa!" Klaus winced.
Pogo was unfazed as he nodded to Grace. "Stick him."
~ * ~
Karina groaned as she started to wake up. Her head was pounding and her shoulder felt incredibly sore, tightly wrapped with a bandage. She rubbed her eyes with her good arm, blinking to clear her vision. She slowly and groggily sat up, taking in her surroundings. Next to her, the table was empty.
"Hello?" she hoarsely called out.
Karina grimaced as she got down from the table. The whole house felt eerily quiet.
"Five?" she tentatively said. "Hello? Is anyone home?"
She wandered around the house a bit more, seeing a door was open. She heard voices and ended up descending down to find herself in a giant concrete, soundproof chamber. Luther, Klaus, and Diego were deep in discussion while Vanya was locked away, screaming and banging on the door.
"You locked up our sister because you think she has powers," Diego accused.
"No, I know she does. Pogo told me," Luther argued. "He's always known, and so did Dad."
"Why would they hide this from us? I mean, am I the only one that didn't know this place existed?"
"He hid so much from us," Klaus breathed out.
"He hid it because he was afraid…of her," Luther stepped forward.
"Oh, that's ridiculous," Klaus dismissed him.
"Is it? Dad's lied about everything else, why is this so far-fetched?" Luther pointed out.
"If you're right, then maybe she's the one who killed Peabody," Diego added.
"And cut Allison's throat and knocked out Karina," Luther finished.
"She didn't knock me out. Harold did," Karina cut in.
The three jumped and turned to see her there.
"You're up. Shouldn't you be with Five?" Luther asked.
"This looks more important to me. Why did you lock Vanya up like she's some circus freak?"
"For safety. She has powers and she hurt people with them!"
"Whoa, no!" Klaus threw up his hands. "Let's…I ju-sorry, just, let's go back, all right? This is Vanya we're talking about. Our sister. The one who always cried when we stepped on ants as kids!"
"Yeah, I know. I know it's difficult to accept-" Luther said, turning away from Karina.
"It's not difficult to accept, it's impossible to accept!" Klaus exclaimed.
"No, he's right. We can't keep her locked up without proof," Diego pointed out.
"Wh-What more proof do you need?" Luther remarked. "Karina is right there! Ask her!"
"That's not fair to me or to Vanya. You can't expect me to explain your sister, because I had no clue she had powers until recently so don't you dare throw me under the bus for it," Karina bit out.
"She's got a point, Luther. Why don't we just open the door and ask Vanya?" Klaus suggested.
"No, she's not goin' anywhere," Luther shot him down.
"No, even if you're right-which I am still not totally convinced you are-she needs our help, and we can't do that if she's locked in a cage," Diego whirled to face him.
"Yeah, and for all we know, she might be struggling with this new power. I mean, it must be scary," Klaus continued.
"Terrifying, really, to discover that you can do something that you never thought you could do!" Karina stepped further into the room.
"Look, if what Pogo told me is even half true, then she is not just a danger to us," Luther snapped.
Everyone turned to see Allison slowly approach. She was confused to see the group.
"Allison, what are you doing down here?" Luther sighed. "You should be in bed. As should Karina."
"You don't get to decide what I should or shouldn't do," Karina snapped as Allison scribbled something down.
"Let her go," her note said.
"I can't do that. She hurt you," Luther shook his head.
She scribbled down another note and held it up. "My fault."
"I'm sorry, but she's staying put. Just until we know what we're dealing with," Luther told her.
"And what happens after that? You're planning on keeping her down here still?" Karina raised an eyebrow.
Luther shot her a silencing glare.
She scoffed incredulously. "Unbelievable. You are unbelievable. I can't believe you would do this to your own sister."
"Is this really any of your concern?"
"You know what? Screw you. You all fight it out," Karina snapped and stormed out.
She was aggravated already and she had no clue where Five was. Nor, to be honest, did she feel like looking for him. He probably thought she was still unconscious.
She went into his room, noticing that Delores was gone.
"Oh…" Karina realized that he probably went to go return her.
She sighed, sinking onto the bed. She didn't even get to say goodbye, how rude. She laid down and shut her eyes, wanting nothing more to just fall asleep and wake up in a better place.
A loud, sudden thud jolted Karina awake and she inhaled sharply, looking around before realizing who was free from her little prison.
"Oh, shit," she leapt to her feet and raced out the door.

It is not a dream, whatever they say afterwards.
...
She is born at the stroke of midnight, on the hottest day of the year. Anaire sweats and curses through the last week of her pregnancy. Fingolfin claims to have hauled blocks of ice down the Calacirya for his wife’s comfort, balanced on his broad shoulders.
But none of it matters, because the moment that little Aredhel, blood-slicked and howling, slips from her mother’s body, lightning flashes, thunder claps, and the heavens open up around her.
...
She is born in rain. She is born into a tempest that shatters trees and warps stone. She is born into the kind of elemental fury that cannot be taught, only experienced.
...
“There is not only joy to be had in life,” says her mother, once, tending to cuts on Aredhel’s back that were carved by a bear that Aredhel had attacked, armed with nothing more than a knife and her own courage. “There is duty as well, my little girl. Duty and kindness and love.”
Aredhel laughs instead of screaming. “The day I find love shall be the day of my death.”
“Do not say that!”
“I have seen it.”
“Aredhel!”
“Wish freedom for me, if you must offer me something,” says Aredhel, and rises, ignoring the blood staining her gown and the pain. “But not love, and certainly not duty!”
...
The gown had been white before it was ruined. Aredhel washes it in her own bathroom, scrubs and scrubs until her blood and the bear’s blood finally fade, until the sun has bleached the stains to nothingness.
Then she wears it again, braids her hair out of the way, and stalks into the forest.
She doesn’t return until she has tamed the bear into friendship.
...
Forever after, she wears white.
...
It is a reminder: life is a stain. It might begin clean, but it shall never end that way. The only thing to do is to wash it out, and to scrub until one’s arms ache, and to let the cloth dry out before being stained once more.
Aredhel learns many, many tricks to removing the stains.
...
I will have vengeance, or I shall have death, Feanor had snarled in the courtyard of Tirion.
Anaire does not ask any of her sons to remain. She does not even speak to Fingolfin. But she is in Aredhel’s rooms when she returns, sitting in the silent darkness.
“Do not go,” she whispers.
Aredhel remembers bears and blood and bitterness on her tongue. Her life in Aman has been a cage, glittering and golden, and if the world outside it shall be dangerous- well, she has a knife, and her own rage, and the knowledge to scrub out stains.
“Do not try to stop me.”
“Have you no love for a mother?”
“I will have freedom,” says Aredhel levelly, and watches her mother’s face crumple, and refuses to feel guilty for it. “I will have freedom, or I shall have death.”
...
(She does not tell that story to her father. The one time he asks- they all know where Anaire was, that last night in Tirion- Aredhel looks at him, steadily, until he turns away.)
...
There are unforgivable things. Those boats- well, Aredhel has never been a forgiving person, and she does not wish to become one now.
...
There are immense storms on the Helcaraxe. Aredhel hears, sometimes, Lalwen laughing so loud it sounds like a scream. She does not weep: she has not wept for many, many years. Even as her people- those she trusted, those who trusted her- fall like flies, Aredhel does not falter.
The tears would freeze on her face, and she has no time to brush it off.
...
When Elenwe dies, Aredhel allows her brother one night to mourn. She holds little Idril in her arms, soothing the shudders away, and doesn’t release her to anyone else. Her brothers are with Turgon; her father is tending to their people. What Idril needs is someone who remembers her.
The next morning, Aredhel wakes Idril, and she brushes the little girl’s hair out until it shines, casting more wood than strictly necessary to ensure it doesn’t freeze. Aredhel’s fingers are not nimble enough for the proper braids, but she manages a reasonable enough facsimile for her niece.
Then she takes her to Turgon’s tent.
“Get up,” she says coldly.
Argon is curled around Turgon, trying to keep him from fading through sheer force of will. He sits up when he sees Aredhel, eyes wide, and she bares her teeth.
“Get him up,” she says flatly.
“I don’t think that’s...”
“Get out, then,” says Aredhel, and doesn’t watch him scuttle out. Argon will bring someone- either Fingon, or her father- and all that means is that she doesn’t have too much time. She glances down at Idril. “Watch.”
It is four steps from the entrance of the tent to the bed. Aredhel takes the steel knife she once used to attack a bear with- the knife she’d left deliberately exposed to the elements- and places the flat very cleanly against Turgon’s throat.
Turgon jerks at the chill. Aredhel goes with him, fluid as water, so she doesn’t cut his throat but keeps the knife against his skin.
He is stronger than her. Aredhel lets him finally throw her off- though it takes longer than she’d expected- and waits, because Turgon’s thrashing has finally led him to catch sight of his daughter, his little daughter with her braids done in the Vanya style, looking like the miniature of her mother. The grief in his eyes is simply awful.
Aredhel waits.
And when he finally draws himself around Idril, sobbing but not the terrible, bone-chilling silence of an elf on the verge of fading, Aredhel leaves.
...
“You cannot save anyone,” Aredhel tells Idril, when Turgon finally allows her out of his sight. “But you can offer them a path back. Whether they take it or not is their choice.”
“The Burners,” says Idril, then- that’s what she calls the Feanorians, precocious child that she is- “will you give them a path back, then?”
Aredhel had loved Celegorm, and Curufin, and the twins, too. But she is not a forgiving person.
“If someone burns their bridges,” she says finally, “you do not owe them more tinder.”
...
(That is a lie.)
...
It is not that she is unforgiving.
It is that she does not wish to be forgiving.
...
When Fingon saves Maedhros, Aredhel visits the healer’s tent in the dead of night. She watches the agony of her cousin’s hroa, etched into his skin, and she does not feel triumph.
If she sees Celegorm again, she will fall into his arms, and she will forgive him everything.
But Argon is dead, and so is Elenwe, and so had they all come through the ice, embittered and betrayed. It is not that Aredhel does not want to forgive her cousins; it is that she fears what will happen if she does. She cannot spend her life waiting for a knife in the back.
Turgon wants nothing to do with them.
Fingon will not leave them behind.
And Aredhel does not wish to see another brother dead. She kisses Fingon, and she kisses Fingolfin, and she kisses Finrod and all his siblings, and then she disappears into the night with Turgon, having not spoken to any of her Feanorian cousins since before the Helcaraxe.
...
“Freedom is not a dream,” she tells her mother, once. “I don’t want it. I need it.”
“If what you wish for is total freedom,” Anaire had replied, “you will never have it.”
Aredhel thinks about her mother, who had loved to dance but been forbidden from it by her grandfather; she thinks about how beautifully Anaire dances in the privacy of their home. She thinks about the way Anaire has chained herself down to the thunder and fury of the House of Finwe, and she laughs.
“You would say that,” Aredhel tells her.
...
She builds Gondolin and she leaves Gondolin and she returns to Gondolin.
The day she finds love- the day she knows she finds love- is when she takes a spear meant for her son. It all cracks open and bleeds away, all the rage seething beneath her breastbone, all the fury she’s spent centuries tending to, all the anger that she’s never known the beginning or ending of, and Aredhel is burning with it, blazing, bright as the father who would soon ride to his death and the brother who would collapse under betrayal and the gods she’d once rejected.
She dies from it, of course, but Aredhel has never feared flame.
...
She is set free upon the river, her corpse dressed in the hands of the niece that she’d once cradled so tightly, her hair braided by the brother she chose to follow. To her son she has given her hairclasps; to Idril she has given the knife that once saved Turgon from fading.
(They say steam rose from her body, so great it enveloped all of Gondolin in a great fog for weeks to come.)
...
That knife- that trusty, small little knife- saves Idril and Earendil from Maeglin, atop the wind-battered tower of Gondolin, when Morgoth finally attacks.
...
Later- years later- Ages later- Aredhel falls into her mother’s arms once more. She is a mother now herself, and she has watched and walked beside and touched and loved dark things, and she is not the girl who’d walked into a forest to conquer her fear with not even a knife to defend herself. She was born in rain and died in a river, a High Lady of the Noldor. She was not felled by Morgoth. Poison took her at the end; not hatred, and not blood, and not flame.
She is the first of her family to be reborn.
“Was it worth it?” asks Anaire, once and only once. “Your dreams of freedom- was any of it worth it?”
Aredhel tosses her hair, bares her teeth.
Smiles.
“It was,” she says, “necessary.”

What are your thoughts on tua S2? Did you feel like the characters grew? What did you like? What did you not? I’m interested in your perspective. Your analysis are super thoughtful and interesting!
Aw, thanks, Anon!
Overall, I really enjoyed S2 and thought it was a solid follow-up to S1. I do have my quibbles about it, so I think (for ease of reference and because my thoughts are a little scattered today) I’ll list some of my personal highlights (in no particular order) before getting into what I didn’t like as much.
Big spoilers ahead.
Allison. I thought they handled her storyline especially well. Of all the siblings, I think she had the most difficult obstacles placed in her way (not only is she a Black woman landing in 1961 Dallas, but she’s a Black woman landing in 1961 Dallas who can’t even speak in her own defense for a year) and they sugarcoated exactly none of it. The writers pulled no punches when showing what civil rights protesters went through, which just made their nonviolent response all the more breathtaking. Allison’s fear and anger during those scenes were palpable even as she kept them hidden. But along with that horror, we see the kindness and warmth of the Dallas Black community, the women who take her in simply because she needs their help, and her love for Ray, perhaps heretofore THE most thoughtful husband ever portrayed on screen. I loved him, and I loved him and Allison together. While I understand and respect his choice to stay in 1963, I wish they’d gotten more time together. They both deserved it.
Vanya. We got to see how much the baggage from her past affected her by glimpsing what she might be like if it were taken away. It’s an interesting philosophical question, and it was explored well, in my opinion. She finds it easier to love and be loved, and she stands up for herself more readily—but she also doesn’t hesitate to use powers she can’t quite control and threatens Five without fully realizing how dire her threat is (or how it might dredge up traumatic memories she doesn’t know exist). The moment where Ben finds her curled up, fully convinced she’s a monster, was heartbreaking. I loved watching her find happiness with Sissy, even if that was fleeting (and dear god, Sissy deserved her happy ending with Vanya, dammit, I don’t care if it would fuck up the timeline). Her patience and sweetness with Harlan were just beautiful. And the way she used the confidence she gained during her amnesia to fully come into her own not to exact revenge on her siblings, but to save them, was fucking phenomenal.
The humor. There was a lot more humor this season, and it was awesome. So many iconic scenes—Olga Foroga, Luther babysitting two homicidal Fives, Elliot awkwardly lecturing his guests on the history of Jello, “NEW TIMELINE NEW ME,” “Your vagina needs glasses,” AJ the fish gobbling up the cigarette bubbles, Five getting to say “fuck”….this season was a lot funnier than the previous one, and I think that was one of its strengths.
Klaus’ cult. It was played for laughs, which I both expected and thought was the best way to handle it. He didn’t want to start a new religion with himself at the center; he just wanted to not get thrown out of any more diners, but Destiny’s Children had other ideas. The “I too am a fraud!” scene was hilarious and tickled the question of whether or not a religion founded on false pretenses can still help those within it find meaning.
Luther. Getting him away from his dad, his siblings, and the Academy was exactly what he needed to become the pure of heart and dumb of ass genius we always knew he was, but his first major step in that direction was heartbreaking. We all knew he’d be rejected once he got to the Academy. We all knew Reginald would rip his heart out and stomp on it in his admittedly fashionable shoes. It gets Luther out on his own and forces him to become his own person apart from his dad, but that doesn’t make it any easier to watch. He got the positive character development he needed, but the catalyst was tragic.
Diego. We see, for the first time, exactly how Reginald kept him in line—not with meds or with PTSD-inducing torture, but with words. Even when he knows Diego as little more than a stranger, Reginald is able to rip off his skin and fling it in his face with a single diatribe; and even at 30, with years away from his dad, Diego is left unable to speak, feeling as if all of his accomplishments up to that point were the work of a dumb kid who thought he was smarter and more capable than he actually was.
Luther and Diego sharing a braincell. Luther has bad ideas. Diego has bad ideas. When they put their bad ideas together, they get terrible ideas. I loved watching them work together as a team, rather than being at each others’ throats for most of the season, even if I’m left hoping Olga Foroga had a pleasant and quiet day after that phone call.
Reginald. At first glance, it may look like the writers were trying to make him likable so they could parade him around as your average abusive-parent-with-a-soft-side. But it’s more nuanced than that. Abusive parents (and abusers in general) often fly under the radar because they fool outsiders into thinking they’re good people. They’re active in their communities. They give to charity. They have friends who attest to their virtue, significant others who think they’re the greatest. And that’s what we see with Reginald. We see him as the rest of the world did: an intelligent, eccentric man with a sharp sense of humor who cared deeply about scientific advancement. That’s how he evaded suspicion—because there were stories from years past of lively parties at his mansion, of what a gentleman he was to Grace and of how he did everything he could to save little Pogo. But those stories would all have come from people he considered his equals. When he’s with people he considers his inferiors—aka, the Umbrella kids—he’s openly condescending and demeaning. We get to see how he fooled the world, and it is chilling.
Elliot. He deserved better, and you can ship him with any one of the Hargreeves kids and get the cutest thing ever.
The Swedes. They said so much while speaking very little.
Ben. He got more personality and screen time, and it was glorious. His love of his family and resentment toward Klaus practically leapt off the screen. The way he says “I’ve missed you all…so much” once they’ve all left was one of those right-in-the-feels moments; and watching him get so much of what he’s wanted for years when he possesses Klaus was beautiful.
Now, as for things I took issue with….
Ben. I understand why they ended his arc the way they did. I get that they were probably afraid the Klaus/Ben dynamic would grow stale if they didn’t change it somehow and wanted to give him a larger role in S3. His death(???) was heartbreaking and extremely well-done. But it also wasn’t foreshadowed. We never got any sense of what ghosts in the TUA ‘verse are, so the fact they can be destroyed by a ton of sound-turned-energy or by going too far into someone’s psyche or whatever happened….it’s not that it doesn’t make sense so much as there’s not enough evidence to determine whether or not it makes sense. It feels like the writers just kinda made that up so they’d have a reason to change Ben’s relationship dynamics, but if that’s the case, couldn’t they have done it another way? Couldn’t they have made it so the immense energy or psychic woo-woo or whatever gave him a power-up instead of destroying him? Vanya transferred some of her energy into Harlan and brought him back to life. Couldn’t something similar have happened with Ben? And if it tied him to Vanya as well as to Klaus, great! More fodder for angst and humor! (”Vannyyyyyyyy, stop hogging Ben!” “You got him for 17 years, Klaus, you can part with him for 20 minutes.” “Guys, don’t I get a say in this?”) I’m glad they didn’t write him out of the series entirely, but I still wish they’d kept him and all the character development he’d gotten throughout S2.
Episode 10. It looks like they tried to cram half a season’s worth of developments into 45 minutes. Twenty minutes in, I’d already said “Wait what the fuck” half a dozen times. A lot of those moments were explained later on, and I was able to make enough inferences to fill in any lingering plot holes, but…still. Too much stuff, too little time. E9 was a perfectly satisfying ending to the season. Yes, it leaves the siblings stranded in 1963, but they could’ve tied up those loose ends in the S3 premiere.
Lila. She’s an incredibly fun character, but her arc is kind of a mess. Most of that is due to E10, and I do feel that more time to let her arc breathe would’ve worked wonders, but I’m left feeling like her turn from “Handler is the best mom ever and I lurve Diego too” to “KILL DIEGO AND HIS EVIL FAMILY” to “Handler is a bad mom and Diego is right” happened too quickly.
The Commission. Okay, so, the Handler announces the entire Board has been killed, and she’s stepping in as director even though everyone appears to know she’s been demoted (and demoted pretty severely—she went from having an office bigger than some apartments to being a case management drone). There’s suspicion and lots of it. But then, La Resistance is….ten or so people in a single room? And when she calls the temps agents to her side, thousands of them show up ready and willing to fight and die? I dunno. Just seems like there should’ve been more splintering going on there. Again, I think they needed more time to tie everything up.
Aside from those complaints, I loved the season. I set aside most of a day to binge it, and I do not regret that decision at all.

Speculation time, doing a better job than last night!
I think that next season Five is going to be recruited into the Sparrow Academy after the big opening losing fight with them. Why? A couple of reasons.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/601212bf7783ecf8aa09935727d08999/a647f77ee9d3be2c-69/s1280x1920/04342aeac191c040cad53bb37ed1caa29113fad8.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/579f214ad93480e388854b5bdc2b7352/a647f77ee9d3be2c-d1/s540x810/6b496c791784e71c793683c06e9c71dd6541ecf5.jpg)
Evil Five suggests to me that Five is joining the antagonists, and I believe the Sparrows will be the antagonists for this season (or at least some of them). In addition, on a promo poster for s2, Five has a pin of the sparrow from the Sparrow Academy. We know that Reg from this timeline expected Team Zero and sort of, kind of liked Five. I could see Five joining the Sparrows if it spared his family or helped him work to save them in some way which brings me to the next leg of this theory...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/10eac83d0500be97611e490de617c8c7/a647f77ee9d3be2c-53/s540x810/cf8ef18ac333cb748e833d479d3577b34982eafd.jpg)
Check out that lock. The other Hargreeves will be locked up in Hotel Oblivion. After they lose the fight, Reginald offers to keep Five out (and I'm going to posit also Vanya. She has an incredibly useful power and she didn't embarass herself, she's never been on a team, and she, Five, and Ben were close as children. It'd be poetic for her and Five to be Sparrows) while dumping the others in the hotel. Five agrees because he figures he can do a better job on the outside of trying to get them out. However, and I think this is where the fun comes in, maybe this time it's HIM that needs rescuing by THEM. I posit that the Sparrows are authoritarian and brutal and he (and Vanya, if she's there which I think she likely will be) is exhausted and overwhelmed and scared and probably broken down a little bit by the rhetoric of being a hero like this.
So what are the others doing? Well, being 1234, of course. This is only partially a joke. They were the only public heroes to make it to adulthood. They have a unique connection and bond and they also are the only ones who haven't ever really... Driven the plot. So I think this time, they're driving the plot. I've spoken extensively about how I think that Klaus is gonna snap this season (with proof both in and out of show), and Allison too. I think this fits in with the idea of the Hotel as a more horror themed concept. The show seems interested in genre play, and those two have horror plots and powers, so I think they're gonna be the driving forces (perhaps along w Ben back on earth). I think the Hotel is gonna be an old timey, opulent, twisty, terrifying desert hotel that is damn hard to break out of, but I think they will break out.
And when they do, they're breaking the illusion of safety that makes the authoritarianism of the Sparrows seem worth it. When they leave the Hotel, so do all the Bad Guys, right? Also I think the Hotel is Reg's interest on the dark side of the moon, so Luther has to pilot them back to earth. And when they get back to earth, they're rescuing Five and Vanya and Prep Ben (I guess) and fighting bad guys and saving the world and then going home!
Also this all means that Five's first costume change is to a nearly identical school uniform.
