Farmers who farm under two hectares, I think, provide something like 30 to 40 percent of the world’s food . . . and if you expand the definition of small-scale farmers to be a bit more than two hectares, those are the ones who are feeding the majority of the world. Moreover, most of the world’s small farmers use agroecological practices because it makes sense when producing at smaller scales not to depend on expensive external inputs like fossil fuel-based fertilizers and synthetic pesticides. These small farmers need more support and more resources to expand their knowledge, productive capacities, and abilities to adapt to climate change, and to improve their livelihoods. Meanwhile, the large-scale farmers are producing commodity crops for cattle, for biofuel, and for processed food, none of which is really helping feed us. They haven’t solved the social problems of hunger or malnutrition, and, worse, they have exacerbated ecological problems, leaving soil depleted and water sources polluted. What has solved the social problems in the food system is organizing around political rights. Look at Kerala in India, which has had a lot of different, better human development indicators than many other states. And they’ve had a more redistributive socialist government for quite a long time. More and more research suggests that techno-optimist and technocratic solutions don’t work. And agroecology and food sovereignty are about allowing people the feedback to say what works.

Gabor Szabo "JazzRaga" LP. So, I have yet to find an album by this man that I don't love. Obviously, some are better than others, but all have a a song or two that make each album an asset to my collection. What makes this album exceptional, in my opinion, is that seven of the eleven tracks are originals. While I always liked his choice of rock covers ("Paint it Black" is this album's offering, and it's great), Szabo was a great songwriter and guitarist and I really appreciate his compositions. Gabor Szabo "Light My Fire" LP. I have long adored Szabo's Skye Records stuff from the late 60's into the 1970's. Being as I like rock, jazz, and easy listening, this man speaks to me because he enjoyed rock, but was a jazz cat, and always did cool renditions of popular rock songs of the day, though I have always enjoyed his originals too. With that said, side 1 is probably the whitest thing Impulse ever put out. There is a friggin' chorus singing Dylan's "Rainy Day Women" which is infuriating if you take everything too seriously, but upon listening for a minute is brilliantly hilarious! I blame Bob Thiele's production choices of leaning too hard on marrying big band to rock. Because when it comes time to solo in "Light My Fire", things start to sound real good, and not like a high school marching band trying to be hip. All of side 2 is great to me. Interesting and very cool trio of records I purchased together at Chicago's famed Jazz Record Mart in the early 2000s. The common denominator being Teddy Charles, an oft-overlooked vibraphonist capable of hip, floating, space-age solos. All three of these records happen to be Japanese pressings I bought sans obi which may explain the low price paid at the time. Who knows? Generally great late night music. Teo plays tenor on his record and is, in fact, the famous Teo Macero, producer of Miles Davis bookend classics Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew. The guy also produced Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out and signed Monk and Mingus to Columbia. Nice resume. Dig it, jazzbo's!
