Why do you think “the trio” make sense as the antagonist of season 6?

i’m combining these two asks together, since they’re both about the trio.

i love the trio as villains. they might even be my favorite villains in the whole show. angelus and glory are both classic, and easily my favorites after, but the trio just get under my skin—much like season six in general—in a way those classic villains don’t. adding a cut for length.

i think a lot of what i like about them was covered in these two excellent posts by @comradesummers, so i’ll probably end up repeating some of what she said. i’ve also talked about the trio before myself, so there’s a good chance i’m repeating my own past posts as well.

but to put things in my own, new words. the reason i love the trio is because of how many levels they operate on, and how interesting those levels are.

on one level, the mundane nature of the trio and their villainy parallels the depressing, irritating banality of adult, real-life problems that the season spends so much time exploring. it’s very deliberate that after a season in which buffy defeated a god, she finds herself antagonized by a cringey trio of boys her age. the writing emphasizes the lameness of the trio enough times that you know this choice was on purpose.

scenes like:

BUFFY: I'm just saying, all the things that have happened lately? Okay, the, the bank robbery, the jewelry heist... XANDER: The exploding lint. BUFFY: I-is it me, or do these things seem really- ANYA: Lame? BUFFY: (shrugs) Well, I was gonna go with unusual, but, yeah.

or:

DOCTOR: Buffy, you used to create these grand villains to battle against, and now what is it? Just ordinary students you went to high school with. No gods or monsters...just three pathetic little men...who like playing with toys.

the fact that buffy dismisses the trio, but eventually finds herself in danger of them, echoes the way that she struggles to “defeat” the problems of adulthood that she thinks she should be able to handle. as she says in “flooded”:

BUFFY: Okay, it's, it's bills, it's money. It's pieces of paper sent by bureaucrats that we've never even met. It's not like it's the end of the world. (she thinks about that for a moment) Which is too bad, you know, 'cause that, I'm really good at.

the fact that the trio is so “ordinary” and “lame” adds to that season six feeling of having been rudely brought to earth. of the magic of childhood being left behind, and having to deal with problems you can’t build a myth around. there’s just something so real and brilliant to me about how wrong it feels that these are buffy’s antagonists. because of how well it evokes that wrong feeling of: this is what adulthood is? these are the problems i have to deal with? it seems so easy, so why is it so hard?

the second level of the trio relates to the first level, in that they represent the mundane dangers of real-life misogyny. season six is all about making the metaphorical literal (ironically, as a metaphor for how the transition from childhood to adulthood can feel), and so there’s something very fitting that in a show that has spent a lot of time creating horror from metaphorical, supernatural misogyny—it suddenly becomes literal. no more swim team jocks becoming rapacious fish monsters, no more frat boys sacrificing girls to a snake demon, no more vampires cornering victims in dark alleys. and okay, the trio is still doing spells and such. but besides that, everything about them is so normal it becomes disturbing. they are simply boys who feel disempowered in their own lives, and think this entitles them to play with other people, particularly women, because they barely see those women as people in the first place.

there is also something crucial to the fact that the trio are the villains that are most like the writers, and who the writers probably conceived of as their audience. it’s on record that many of the nerd debates that the trio have were lifted directly from debates the writers would have amongst themselves. the writers were also on fan boards, and well aware of the fact that their show was popular with very nerdy people. which means that when they made nerdish avoidance and entitlement a villain in season six, it was another way of bringing the show to earth. by making the trio into some of the show’s mostly subtly, yet acutely, horrifying antagonists there is an implication that: misogyny and wrongdoing is not something that only oafish athletes and distant authorities are capable of. it is something that anyone can be complicit in.

which is also why the third level of the trio, the fact that they act as mirrors of all of the other characters, works so well. because season six is when the show makes some of its most beloved characters do very bad things. the protagonists become aware, just as the audience does, of their potential for complicity in evil. and i think this is a very very important aspect of becoming an adult for the show to capture. to me, becoming an adult means becoming responsible for yourself and your moral choices in a way you aren’t quite, when you’re younger. bad choices are a bit cuter when you’re younger, a bit more forgivable. you’re growing, right? but at a certain point that stops working, and you need to own your choices. and that means being able to recognize that you’re capable of being the villain, so that you can choose differently.

so over the course of season six, all of the characters get tempted by irresponsible and easy ways out. sometimes they give in, and sometimes they don’t. but no matter what, the trio is there to help frame the actions of the protagonists. so for example, while the trio robs banks and steals diamonds, buffy takes a difficult job, and doesn’t take advantage of the opportunity to blackmail the doublemeat palace. or the fact that buffy is giddy at being turned invisible in “gone” is framed as troubling in part because the trio are giddy at the idea of invisibility as well. and of course: willow, spike, and buffy, and how they behave in intimate relationships, all get paralleled with warren and the trio. what tara says to willow in “tabula rasa�� for example, is much like what katrina says to the trio in “dead things.” (TARA: “violate my mind like that? how could you willow? how could you after what glory did to me?” WILLOW “violate you? i…i-i didn’t mean anything like that, i-i just wanted us to not fight anymore” / WARREN: “i just, i wanted us to be together” […] KATRINA: “well this is not some fantasy, it’s not a game you freaks! it’s rape” JONATHAN: “what?” ANDREW”: “no..we didn’t…”). or buffy’s “tell me you love me” exchange with spike in “as you were” is almost word for word what warren says to the mindwiped katrina in “dead things.” and of course, there’s the fact that spike and warren both assault the woman that they claim to care about in an attempt to get them back.

does this mean that all of our protagonists are irredeemably evil? of course not. the reason that warren ends the season flayed and burnt alive is because he repeatedly commits to doing the wrong thing. while the scoobies and spike don’t, because as flawed as they are, they still ultimately try to make better decisions. but it doesn’t mean that they’re not capable of harm. and specifically, the kind of harm that comes from not seeing oneself as truly capable of it. spike thinks he doesn’t hurt buffy, willow thinks she’s just trying to fix things, jonathan and andrew think they’re living out a comic book. this is why i also love how the season lulls you into a sense of complacency with the trio. you think the show might be playing their hijinks straight, and validating their less-than-savory plans as funny, until “dead things” pulls the rug out from under the season and shows what the writing has been doing with them all along. that wake-up slap of katrina saying “rape” is like the slap of willow’s breakdown in “wrecked” or xander leaving anya or warren shooting tara, or—and this takes us back to the central metaphor of the season—buffy being brought back from heaven. that slap of “childhood is over, it’s time to be responsible now, and it turns out you’re fucking up at it.”

this honestly is just the surface of what i could talk about with the trio, and it’s already long enough as is. and when a villain has that much thematic richness in it, i just can’t help but love it.

Buffy, The Trio, and Performance

I think one of the reasons I’m so obsessed with The Trio is that they’re the embodiment of the season’s themes of performance. They operate both as performers and as audience members, so that their story becomes a fascinating reflection on Buffy’s character.

Through their constant pop culture references regarding the framing of their own actions, the writers make it really really clear that The Trio are following a script. They see themselves as narrative villains, with their model being the fictional pop culture villains they idolize. And because those villains are both beloved and over the top, the act of emulating them doesn’t register as harmful (at least not to Jonathan and Andrew). As far as they’re concerned, being The Trio is just a game. It’s villain cosplay, basically. And just as they’ve assigned themselves the role of villain, they’ve assigned Buffy the role of hero.

So because they’ve cast Buffy as the hero of their show (without consulting her of course, because these guys are really bad at acknowledging that other people have agency), the Trio install cameras in her house. By doing this, they actively create a literal show within a show (as opposed to the figurative one) and cast themselves both as the characters and as the audience. Moreover, they are very direct stand-ins for the rl audience of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in that their criticisms of Buffy (the character) preempt the viewer’s. In Life Serial for instance, The Trio have this conversation after spying on Buffy for a day:

ANDREW: Why is the Slayer here anyway? She's a student, she's a construction worker, and ... now she's some kind of ... selling stuff person?

WARREN: (shakes head) It's like she's completely without focus.

The Trio, like the rl audience, expects Buffy to play her part well, to be the perfect fictional hero who knows what she’s doing. So when she fails to be that person, both audiences are critical.

That’s why their plot in Dead Things is so important. In that episode, The Trio’s illusion of fictionality is shattered (at least Jonathan’s is, Warren already knew what he was doing and Andrew’s illusions last until Storyteller). This happens because Katrina directly confronts them with the consequences of their actions. But moreover, Katrina specifically calls them out on their bad performances:

KATRINA: Oh, you think? You bunch of little boys, playing at being men. (yelling) Well, this is not some fantasy, it's not a game, you freaks! It's rape!

Katrina’s line here is about forcing The Trio to face reality (the sexual assault) as opposed to games and fantasies, and this directly ties into Buffy’s story. The rl audience has been aligned with The Trio as the in-universe audience, specifically through the criticism of Buffy for not playing her role correctly. By shattering The Trio’s views of fictionality in general, the writers are also shattering their views (and the rl audience’s views) of Buffy. If what we’re watching isn’t “a game” or “some fantasy,” if The Trio aren’t fun, harmless comic book villains, then we can’t expect Buffy to be the perfect comic book hero. She’s not playing a role, she’s a person (always a weird thing to say about a fictional character), and, as has just been helpfully demonstrated, expecting otherwise can be extremely harmful.

And that message is brought home in the final scene of the episode. Because The Trio and the audience aren’t the only people who are disappointed in Buffy’s failure to play her appointed role. Buffy is too. And so she wants desperately for Tara to tell her that she’s wrong, that she’s a monster, that she can’t be forgiven, because if she can’t be the hero then she can only be a villain. Otherwise, Buffy can’t see how she fits in the story at all. But ultimately, life isn’t a story and Buffy isn’t playing a part. She’s just Buffy. And when she finally manages to accept that, to dismiss performance and actually face reality, that's when she starts to slowly heal.

tl;dr: “Life’s not a song / Life isn’t bliss / Life is just this / It’s Living.”

You can learn a lot about the soul of a city by how it treats its dead.

New Orleans doesn’t fear death, but has it stitched into the very fabric of its identity. It’s a place where history weighs on your shoulders at every corner. It has a fatalism etched in the twilight, high-pitched revelry that defines its exuberant citizens and their fierce acknowledgment that history is not something you leave behind, but carry with you every day. It’s evident in how voodoo and folk magic aren’t just granted importance by local practitioners, but has become, for better or for worse, a valued tool to pull in tourists. In the summers I spent there as a child, I created a ritual I continue to this day: admiring the beauty and opulence of the mausoleums that pack its cemeteries. One such mausoleum was that of Marie Laveau, the famed Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, buried in Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1.

Laveau is as elusive a figure as the lineage of New Orleans voodoo itself — much that is known about her is blurred by conjecture and mythology. But what can be substantiated is how Laveau’s story has become deeply interwoven with New Orleans’ identity. Laveau’s visage can be found on murals and T-shirts, the gris-gris bags sold to tourists, and in museums meant to acknowledge the city’s importance within the folk-magic community. Her influence extends beyond the brutal beauty of the city she called home, seeping into pop culture — including Marvel comics, the Neil Gaiman novel American Gods, and the TV series Lost Girl — that’s interested in giving historical heft to its supernatural explorations, most recently with Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Coven, in which Angela Bassett played the revered Voodoo Queen.

Laveau encapsulates better than any other historical figure the narrow position black witches hold in the public imagination. (It’s important to note that, to examine this trend, I am using “witches” as a catch-all term for these characters, including rootworkers and voodoo priestesses.) While their practices — whether Haitian voodou or rootwork — are appropriated to add a flash of exoticism, they often remain thinly drawn figures, pushed to the margins of their respective stories. They are used to incite fear or curiosity in the white imagination, which remains deeply suspicious of black ancestral practices that don’t allow for easy translation. In pop culture, the historical underpinnings of these practices — which were brought to America by slaves trying to fiercely hold onto their own belief systems, even as colonialism tried to beat it out of them — are traded for a simpler, highly exoticized portrayal.

This is exacerbated by the fact that there is a yawning chasm in pop-culture history in which black witches are rarely explored. From Naomie Harris’s Pirates of the Caribbean character Tia Dalma to the forever-sidelined Bonnie and her brethren in The Vampire Diaries to the wry teen witch Rochelle in the beloved 1990s cult classic The Craft, the black witches we do see are predominantly sketches, not characters with interiority, despite the considerable talents of the actresses that bring them to life. Of course, it should be noted that witches need not be women: Marie Laveau was said to have studied under Dr. John, a fabled New Orleans voodoo figure; film and television history is occasionally punctuated by male practitioners, including Nelsan Ellis’s vulgar grace as Lafayette in True Blood or the folk practices exemplified by Danny Glover’s slippery performance in Charles Burnett’s To Sleep With Anger. But in real life and pop culture, witchcraft is one of the few avenues in which women are exalted and seen as powerful figures to be respected. The lack of powerful black witches in film and TV is a symptom of a larger problem that has existed in America since its very beginning: the fear of black women’s autonomy and prowess.

Nowhere are the issues with representation for black witches more stark than when considering those that practice hoodoo, voodoo, or various folk magic. Voodoo — a religion that has two primary strains in Haitian voodou and New Orleans voodoo, which melds the practice with Catholicism — has long been used in horror films to denote “the other.” Take early zombie films like White Zombie (1932), more recent fare, like the sprawling series of Chucky horror films, Lisa Bonet’s sexually overwrought turn in Angel Heart (1987), and The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988).

But despite hoodoo and voodoo’s presence in these narratives, black characters are either opaque or don’t appear at all. As Katrina Hazzard-Donald writes in her in-depth study, Mojo Workin’: The Old African Hoodoo System, “Even in the twenty-first century, unfounded prejudice, misrepresentation, and misunderstanding of traditional African religion still continue. Unfortunately, contemporary popular images, with unlimited power to capture the psyche […] have continued to be the most powerful tools in reinforcing the older misrepresentations. Where these images would be contested and challenged, the African as the human element is simply excluded from the portrayal.” In effect, the history of black witches in film and TV is less one of misrepresentation than of a stunning absence.

Of the films where black witches are actually represented, one of the earliest examples is 1934’s Drums O’ Voodoo. In it, the religion is buttressed by a primarily black cast, making it the first horror film to do so. The witch at its heart is voodoo priestess Auntie Hagar (Laura Bowman). While voodoo is somewhat criticized in the film, she proves to be the voice of reason and is blessedly not depicted as a monstrous figure. Unfortunately, since Drums O’Voodoo, voodoo priests and priestesses have mostly been evoked as figures to be scorned, or as outright villains. One of the most egregious examples of this is 2005’s The Skeleton Key.

The Skeleton Key is a deliriously ridiculous horror film that makes little use of its Louisiana setting, hoodoo, or the horror inherent to its premise. But it is a useful, modern example of how black witches are both silenced and used to exemplify the deeply white American fear of black folk magic. The Skeleton Key’s horror comes from its two hoodoo practitioners — Papa Justify (Ronald McCall) and Mama Cecile (Jeryl Prescott) — who have been using the “Conjure of Sacrifice” to possess the bodies of white people for the past 90 years in order to live eternally. What’s frustrating about The Skeleton Key and other films that render black witches in this manner are the thorny racial dynamics the filmmakers skirt entirely. Neither Papa Justify nor Mama Cecile are seen speaking much for themselves when we see them in their original black bodies. And there is something inherently cruel, and boldly callous, about taking the black folk magic that slaves practiced to hold onto their history and twisting it into a method of horror against white people.

In American Horror Story: Coven, Bassett’s take on Marie Laveau is granted more narrative importance and deeper characterization than the hoodoo practitioners seen in The Skeleton Key, but she is ultimately a host of contradictions. She’s an immortal powerhouse, until the narrative calls for her to be easily outdone by her white counterparts. She’s respected in the community, using her abilities to fight against racist strictures, but will also sacrifice her own children and underlings if it will protect her authority. As someone who considers New Orleans my second home, there is something about the portrayal of its ancestral black folk practices, as seen through Laveau, that feels emotionally distant, like a tourist skipping through Bourbon Street at 2 a.m. and believing they have an understanding of the city in all its ragged, blistering complexity. It isn’t merely surface level, it’s a caricature. Of course, Laveau serves gumbo and speaks with an unplaceable accent. It’s an outsider’s understanding of this city and its magic — all flash and little substance.

It isn’t that reimaginings of Laveau, like the one in Coven, are bad in and of themselves. I don’t necessarily want black witches in film and TV to always cleave to realism. But what this portrayal lacks, and what ultimately undoes it, is its lack of a sense of community. Laveau’s willingness to destroy the extremely powerful “Supreme” witch Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) and the immortal racist murderess Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) using any means necessary, even manipulating members of her own community, makes her gestures toward black political resistance hollow. Hoodoo, voodoo, and folk magic of all sorts are deeply tied to community. Trading this dimension of these practices to depict a lone figure, who uses the cover of night to hide her horrific deeds, turns beliefs meant to celebrate our ancestors into fantastical methods, solely used to bring down white people who are deemed troublesome.

Beyond Marie Laveau, the most important historical black witch in film and TV is, undoubtedly, Tituba, an enslaved woman who was accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Tituba has appeared in both film versions of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Maid of Salem, and has been name-checked in countless works, most recently portrayed by Ashley Madekwe in the canceled WGN series Salem.

Tituba is crucial to understanding how black witches have been framed by pop culture, which makes it startling to learn she likely wasn’t actually a black woman. In reality, Tituba was a South American native who sailed from Barbados. There is no evidence that she even practiced voodoo. But in the wake of high-profile works like The Crucible, voodoo has been irrevocably tied to our understanding of both her and that point in history.

As Stacy Schiff writes for Smithsonian Magazine, “Described as Indian no fewer than 15 times in the court papers, she went on to shift-shape herself. As scholars have noted, falling prey to a multi-century game of telephone, Tituba evolved over two centuries from Indian to half-Indian to half-black to black, with assists from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (who seemed to have plucked her from Macbeth), historian George Bancroft and William Carlos Williams. By the time Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, in 1952, Tituba was a ‘Negro slave.’” She further explains the reasoning for this dramatic shift, writing, “Her history was written by men, working when African voodoo was more electrifying than outmoded English witchcraft. All wrote after the Civil War, when a slave was understood to be black. Miller believed Tituba had actively engaged in devil worship; he read her confession — and the 20th-century sources — at face value.” Tituba has become an outsize figure in pop culture’s approach to black witches not because of a sincere interest in the interiority of these women, but a desire for sensationalism easily wrought by creating a simplistic portrayal of voodoo.

It shouldn’t be surprising that the black witches and priestesses who feel the most richly explored and understood are ones written by black women. In Queen Sugar, the television series brought to the screen by Ava DuVernay, Rutina Wesley plays Nova Bordelon, an activist based in New Orleans who also is a hoodoo rootworker respected by her community. Nova’s practices aren’t the center of her characterization, and Queen Sugar is steadfastly based in realism rather than the supernatural. But this quality adds dimension to Nova’s story; a tender ritual she does with her sister in the season-two episode “Caroling Dusk” is beautiful to behold for its simplicity and how carefully it is threaded into the scene. The ritual is used as both a cleansing and christening of Charley’s new home. Charley looks at Nova somewhat incredulously as she lights herbs and lets the smoke waft through the apartment, with Nova using feathers to guide the smoke into various corners. Then there’s Beyoncé, who, while not explicitly playing a priestess in her magnum opus Lemonade, used various Yoruba traditions and folk practices as visual inspiration. But you have to go back 20 years to find the most in-depth, authentic, and moving portrait of black witches: the 1997 independent film Eve’s Bayou.

Eve’s Bayou is a film I’ve cherished since childhood. It centers on a prosperous Creole community in 1960s rural Louisiana, seen from the perspective of 10-year old Eve Batiste (Jurnee Smollett) as she recounts the story of her father’s death, which she feels responsible for. The witches in the story are Eve’s aunt, Mozelle Batiste Delacroix (Debbi Morgan), and the powerful Elzora (Diahann Carroll). Eve’s Bayou gently teases the supernatural, but is remarkably accurate when it comes to its approach to rootwork. In the film, the term “voodoo” is inaccurately used, but I’ve always seen that as being due to the story being from the perspective of a 10-year-old who doesn’t know the particular grooves of these practices.

Of all the characters in the film, it’s Mozelle who proves to be the most fascinating. Mozelle is popular among locals who are looking to understand the troubles of their present or the course of their future. She advises them with various hoodoo practices and has a fascinating history of her own — every man she’s ever loved has died by violent ends. She’s quick-witted, passionate, and fiercely independent. Most importantly, she has a quality lacking in other black witches in pop culture: a sense of humanity. Mozelle’s humanity is rendered in how deeply she cares for her community and her value within it, as various people turn to her in times of need. Actress Debbi Morgan lends a quiet strength and fierce empathy to the character. But the writing also gives her great dimension: She’s witnessed watching over Eve, helping her sister-in-law, performing rootwork, and navigating the deaths of the men she’s loved.

One passage I was particularly struck by in Mojo Workin’ crystallizes what makes Eve’s Bayou so moving compared to other depictions of black witches:

“As Hoodoo developed, it was known in all the slave community and was a part of the psychic structure of every individual enslaved there. […] It addressed the needs of the slave community and, later, the free African American community; it integrated psychological support, spiritual direction, physical strength, and medicinal treatment. It helped define the cultural uniqueness of the old black belt nation, its members, and their descendants.”

Hoodoo and (New Orleans) voodoo have been warped over time by the opportunistic confidence artists who have added it to their arsenal. But they’ve also been undermined and disrespected by one of the most powerful tools at the disposal of white patriarchal structures that continue to otherize blackness: film and TV. Writer-director Kasi Lemmons’s artistry and sincere respect for the knotted culture of black Creoles in rural Louisiana proves how rich this storytelling can be when it actually explores the interior lives of black witches in American history, rather than using them as thinly drawn vehicles for exoticism and horror.

It may very well be naïve to expect historical truths and cultural sensitivity when it comes to filmmakers approaching black witches, whether they practice Wicca, hoodoo, or New Orleans voodoo. But as black political identity has become a vital criterion for how pop culture is judged, it seems foolish to ignore this lineage. I yearn to see black witches who are bold and unyielding, venomous and tenderhearted, solemn rural practitioners and silver-tongued city dwellers. I yearn to see black witches given interiority and narrative importance like their white counterparts, whether that be in prickly dramas that acknowledge the thorny history of the South or archly constructed supernatural fare. I yearn to see the culture of my ancestors explored in all its vibrant complexity, not whittled down in order to find new ways to frighten white people about the cultures they’ve had a hand in demonizing since this country’s beginning.

To go along with The Classic Book Tag, I thought I would put together a recommended list of Classic novels, short stories and plays, since I didn’t get to mention too many in the tag! This will be a long one, so let’s just get into it.

1. Wuthering Heights

This is the best book ever! Well, to me at least. I know people are quite divided about this book, you either love it or hate. It’s about Heathcliff and Cathy, to people who are madly in love but are destined never to be together. They go through trials, and always end up on opposing sides. Because they can’t be together, they hurt each other and loved ones. But in this dark, twisted love story, another love emerges that is the exact opposite of Heathcliff and Cathy’s. Where theirs is doomed, the new love is full of light and hope. This book is so perfectly crafted, and heartbreaking. If you are planning to read one classic book this year, I highly recommend you read Wuthering Heights!

2. The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter is a fantastic novel! It gives a huge ‘fluff you’ to slut-shaming and the main characters are lovely. It’s a novel about love, loyalty and maybe even a little bit of magic. When out main character, Hester Prim, has a child out of wedlock, she refuses to name the father of her child and is forced to wear a scarlet ‘A’ on her clothing. Although she is separated from society, she does not become bitter or resentful; she proves the town wrong and becomes an amazing single mother. The magic of the novel comes about when the child, Pearl, is older and is said to be a fairy. Another aspect of magic in the book is much more dark. When the identity of Pearl’s father is revealed, he has an ‘A’ carved into his chest. As readers, we can assume he carved it there himself, but the book does leave the answer opened ended for the purpose of “maybe magic”.

3. Great Expectations

Great Expectations is a chunky book, but don’t let its size scare you away from this book! it is fantastic! It is truly a story about life. It begins when our main character, Pip, is six years old, when he first meets the convict. The novel follows Pip throughout his life, from meeting the eccentric Miss Havisham, falling in love with the indifferent and cold Estella, and coming into money and great expectations. We see the rise and fall of Pip as a person, ending the novel around the time that Pip is thirty. I laughed, cried and simply fell in love with the characters of this novel!

4. Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies is a dark novel about the evils of human nature that live in all of us, even as children. I think this novel is made frightening because the evil acts are committed by children. It’s about young boys who, after a plane crash, end up living on an island. The boys form two camps, one being the heroes of the novels, the other being the villains. The villainous group, led by Jack, begin to worship a pig’s head, which represents evil and demonic presents on the island. The boys hurt and kill each other. It’s about how people will turn on each other when there are no societal rules. And just as much about how hard it would be to reenter a civilized society.

5. Dracula

I’m sure everyone knows about Dracula, so I will give the briefest of rundowns. Dracula is a Gothic novel about vampires. It deals with love, obsession, and a fight for a young woman’s soul. Read it, it’s really good!

6. Frankenstein

Again, everyone knows the major plot points, so another very short rundown. Frankenstein is about a man who suffers the consequences of playing god.

7. Northanger Abbey

The first of Jane Austen’s novel to be published, Northanger Abbey is a lighthearted novel that follows the heroine, Catherine Morland. In the novel, Catherine is taken to Bath for the first time, and while there meets new ‘friends’ who tend to take advantage of her naive innocence. When she meets Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor, Catherine is invited to stay at their family home, Northanger Abbey. While there Catherine imagines that a terrible murder has taken place, which leads her to trouble.

8. To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee’s award winning novel is about childhood innocence and the terrible cruelty of racism. This novel details the trail of Tom, a black man who is accused of sexually assaulting a white woman. It is told through the eyes of Scout Finch, a six-year-old daughter of Tom’s lawyer, Atticus Finch. Having the story told by a child makes a heartbreaking story even more so.

9. Les Miserable

The ultimate chunky book! This story is about one man’s journey to freedom. Biblical allusions, action, adventure and barricade boys. And a bomb musical to go along with it! Don’t let the size of this book turn you away. It is worth the effort!

10. Beloved

Beloved is more of a modern classic, set in the American south during the time of slavery. This novel is about a woman who believes that her dead baby has come back to haunt her. Two story lines reveal the pain and humiliation of slavery. This is a powerful novel, highlighting the strength of colored women. I highly, highly recommend it! But be warned, if you do read it, you will need a box of tissues with you.

11. The Fall of the House of Usher

The House of User is my favorite of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories. It is about a young man going to see his friend who lives, along with his sister, at the House of Usher. When our main character, Fredrick arrives, the Usher sister, Madeline, has died. That night, the Usher brother, Rodrick, exclaims that his sister has been buried alive, and that he’s seen her walking in the halls. What happens because of the dead and madness that lives within the house is, quite literally the House of Usher cracking down the middle and falling to bits.

12. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

A Halloween classic, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a story about Ichabod Crane. He is a well-meaning, somewhat money hungry man, who attends a Halloween ball to impress his lady love Katrina. On the way home from this ball, he is chased by The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. While not necessarily frightening, maybe don’t read it while sitting along in a class room. Because inevitably someone will walk in at the same moment the Horseman finally makes his appearance and you will jump a mile out of your seat. I speak from experience. If nothing else, make sure you read it around Halloween.

13. Hamlet

Hamlet is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate classic. It is alluded to and quoted in so many pieces of literature since its debut in 1600. It has everything, ghosts, murder, psychotic breaks, romance, incest, adventure, existential crises and even pirates! It is such a good story, and please, please if you have to read it for school, do not write it off as boring or too hard! if you go into it with a closed mind, you won’t enjoy it. So please just let yourself go in this world, and I’m sure you’ll like it!

There’s Something About Xander

I've seen more dislike for Xander in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom than for any other character in the 'verse. I honestly didn't expect it, and I've been thinking about the possible reasons behind it. I've seen arguments that he's actually not a good guy, that he's selfish, that he's childish, and other things like that. My thoughts were "Yeah, maybe he's not as much of an upstanding hero as some of the other characters, but is he really that terrible?" It honestly baffles me that people prefer Spike, who really is murdery and evil for most of his run on the series. So, what gives? What's with all the Xander hate?

I've got a theory.

It could be bunnies.

No, it's probably not bunnies, but I had to.

Watching BtVS the first run through in middle/high school, the second time in college, and again (and again) in my late 20s, Xander has always seemed like a normal guy to me. He reminds me of friends I had in high school, friends I have now, my dad sometimes. That's part of the appeal of Xander, isn't it? He's sort of our way in. He's just a normal guy who happened to fall in with some extraordinary people and he's doing his best to keep up, like any of us would do.

Do you know who else fits that description?

Jonathan.

Jonathan Levinson was always the guy in the background. He wasn't so different from Xander. He was a normal guy, sort of the opposite of popular. He even crossed paths with Buffy and her friends several times, but he never broke into the group. Why not? Circumstance, maybe. Right place, wrong time. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Besides, it was always assumed that most people didn't know about Buffy's slayer duties. Maybe he just thought she was some violent, occasionally helpful nutjob. It’d be understandable for the guy to keep his distance.

However, it was revealed in The Prom that Buffy’s fellow students knew more than they were given credit for. Jonathan presented her with an award for Class Protector, much to her surprise and ours. We saw in Superstar that Jonathan knew a lot about Buffy and her friends, that he longed to be a part of their lives in a meaningful way. How long had he felt that way? How long had he been fantasizing about our beloved heroes? We've seen the way Jonathan handled feelings of rejection and exclusion. In Go Fish he got vengeance on the popular swim team by peeing in the pool, which he confessed to Willow. In Earshot he very nearly committed suicide only to be saved by Buffy when she thought he was planning on hurting others. None of these things seemed villainous, but they were early warning signs that this kid was on a bit of a wrong track.

How did things turn out for Jonathan? Well, he ended up being a part of the Trio along with Andrew Wells and Warren Mears, and all of these guys shared a lot of traits with Xander. They were all considered unpopular nerds. Andrew was reminiscent of Xander in early season one with his penchant for pop culture references, his tendency to ask all the obvious questions, and his position as a bit of comic relief. Warren shared Xander's frustration regarding female rejection, and his tendency to call people out in a blunt way when he felt they were wrong. Jonathan shared Xander's unique perception of others as the outsider looking in. All three of these guys relate closely to Xander in the way that any of them easily could have been a part of the group and served the same purpose, if only they'd crossed paths with Buffy sooner or in a different way.

And all of these guys became villains.

Granted, for the most part, they seemed harmless, much like Jonathan in early seasons. Sure, they were a bit awkward and made us roll our eyes, but they were just a couple of nerds. However, Warren especially turned out to be a particularly alarming threat. Not only did he want to kill Buffy, he was able to con or intimidate his two relatively non-violent pals into going along with him. Andrew killed Jonathan. Warren almost killed Buffy and he did kill Tara, triggering the show's most jarring hero-to-villain transformation in Willow.

Xander could have easily become this guy. He shares just the right combination of traits with our outcast-turned-villain, Warren, to unsettle us.

Xander's a bit immature, prone to outbursts similar to temper tantrums during which he pulls no verbal punches. We see this in When She Was Bad when Buffy's decision to go after a vampire results in an attack on her friends at the library: "If you'd worked with us for five seconds you could've stopped this." In Dead Man's Party when Buffy returns from L.A. he's quick to throw jabs at her, pointing out all her flaws: "Taking off like you did was incredibly selfish and stupid." This carries over to how he reacts to women when faced with rejection and criticism. This is particularly obvious in his interactions with Cordelia in season one: "I don't know what everyone's talking about. That outfit doesn't make you look like a hooker." (Angel). It's also shown in his general attitude toward Buffy's interest in Angel: "Hard as it may be for you to conceive, a human woman finds me attractive. I realize she's no mystery guy handing out leather jackets – and while we're on the subject, what kinda girly-name is Angel anyway?" (Teacher's Pet). This is a tendency he shares with Warren, which is scarily paralleled in how they cope with breakups.

In Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered after Cordelia breaks up with Xander, he blackmails Amy into casting a love spell on Cordy: "I want her to want me. Desperately. Then I can break up with her and subject her to the same hell she's putting me through." This is similar to the Cerebral Dampener Warren uses on his ex, Katrina, to bend her will: "She's mine. But don't worry. You can play with her all you want... after I'm done with her." The objectification of women and the desire to control them is a disturbing trait Xander and Warren share. The tendency to quell emotional distress with quick or supernatural solutions is also something Xander shares with all members of The Trio.

It could be argued the big difference between Xander and The Trio is that Xander is part of a group of friends, which keeps him on the right track. He was accepted by a few key people and given a purpose greater than himself, which came with a bit of power. Acceptance, purpose, and power were things all members of The Trio were lacking, and they all went to desperate lengths to achieve them. It's more than a little creepy to think that Xander was an encounter or two away from being a potential villain. It's a little too close for comfort.

11. Machita Chima

LOOK AT HER! She's so cute~ I'm usually not a fan of characters that have really short bangs but she really sells it. She looks so cute. Not to mention her outfit is adorable and she looks so cute in every model~

12. Yumeoi Kakeru

I could stare at his model for hours. I think he looks like he came out of an early 2000's anime. I like it a lot! His eyes are captivating to me. The shape feels unique. Anime protag vibes

13. Ange Katrina

She's so cute~ Ange also looks like she was painted. If you couldn't tell already, I love models that look like they were painted. She has a lot of red going on but it doesn't feel too overbearing. It doesn't hurt the eyes. I really like the gold accents.

14. Mayuzumi Kai

Gender. He's so gender. That's literally all I have to say about him. Gender <3

15. Oliver Evans

He's so pretty. I love the green he's associated with. It's like an olive forest green and I love it so much. The yellow really stands out too. Funny enough, he actually kind of looks like me. He's also gender <3

16. Sukoya Kana

Another vampire! Funny enough, I didn't know she was a vampire till I saw more clips of her. Personally, I'm not a fan of pink (especially this shade) but I feel like it really fits her.

17. Han Chiho

I miss him every day ;-; The gold color of his eyes and eyes and the gold accents on his clothes really makes everything stand out. Not to mention the butterfly on his neck and the pop of blue with the earring. I also really like his glasses. Not a lot of vtubers have glasses with their original design.

18. Melissa Kinreka

Them <3 ;-; Melissa my beloved. Their design is definitely cluttered but I really like the colors. Their face is beautiful and I love the little fangs they have. Their other model with the short hair is so cute too! Mel with short hair supremacy

19. Kendou

Look! I love it when characters have white and a very bright color. Not to mention I'm a sucker for cute dog boys.

20. Ike Eveland

We got ourselves another pretty boy. I like the blue accents a lot. The blue in his hair is really pretty too. It's a nice shade. The cold accents are nice, if not a bit too much. I wanna see more silver on Ike in the future when he has new outfits.

This is all for fun. I'm not trying to say someone's model is better than others I'm just listing my favorite designs.

Kagami Hayato

I love the painted look that he has. It feels like I'm looking at a digital painting. Pretty boy :)

2. Fushimi Gaku

I like how you can see how much of a menace he is just by his model. I'm also a sucker for characters with beauty marks. I can hear his laugh whenever I look at his model lol

3. Kanae

I'm gonna be 100% honest, Kanae is only on this list because I like the accessories he comes with and how all his different models all accent his personality. He looks like a soft boy but is actually a terror on society <3

4. Suzuki Masaru

My son <3 I love him so much. He's just a babu. Babu babu. I love how his outfits are super edgy yet he looks like that. All of his outfits remind me or alt or goth but without the attitude. Even when he's crossdressing it's very gothic lolita and it matches his over clothing aesthetic.

5. Todoroki Kyoko

She looks very gyaru and has a rambunctious look to her. I love her color palette so much. The mix of light accessories with a warmer skintone and top is very pretty to me.

6. Sister Claire

Look at her. I love her. Sister is such a soft person and her model with its lace and basic outfit. I think her eyes are what stand out, along with her sand colored hair.

7. Sasaki Saku

I love how she looks. Sasaki's look reminds me of that type of character that looks like a bad student but is really smart. Sasaki's a bit of a troublemaker and I feel like it reflects on her school uniform with sneakers, sweater, and small fang.

8. Honma Himawari

Hima and Saku have the same artist but their vibes are completely different. I'm also really biased because I love their artstyle. It feels painted and watercolored. Not to mention their eyes are beautiful.

9. Kuzuha

I mean look at him. I love all of his different models. They're all so cool. I like how he doesn't look like your stereotypical vampire. Kuzuha just vibes and I'm here for it.

10. Rindou Mikoto

I mean look at her. Her design is beautiful. It feels like looking at royalty. She feels very fancy and man, I can image that she would make a very pleasant clinking noise when she walks.
