Hey! I hope you're okay. You know, I miss you very much. If only I could back to that day or that version of myself, I would do better but it's too late but not that much. It's like, umm... to boost myself better kind of thought I really miss our moments together, messing with each other and crying like we're in some sort of a movie. This time it's different, it's like I've been consumed to responsibilities and nothing excites me that much. She smiled when she woke up yet again, amongst the soft plush covers and mattress that felt like she was sleeping on clouds.   Opening her eyes, she glanced around the ornately decorated room. Waking up there every morning  always felt like she was in a dream.  She jumped up ,from her bed running  over to the balcony, throwing open the doors, as if she expected the gardens below not to be visible.  But it was, every single morning.  She had been in Cordonia a little more than three weeks; the ending of the first week at the palace where she was participating in Prince Liam’s social season.  She was living her own Cinderella story thanks to Prince Liam Rys, who after spending the night with her in New York, asked her to come visit him in Cordonia for a week, and then asked her to stay..

She was not the only one living their own Cinderella story that had Liam to thank.  A young Nicolas Karahalios had everything he owned packed in a duffel bag slung over his shoulder and was standing at the palace gates waiting for entry.

“Full name, and state your business at the palace.”  

“Karahalios, Nicolas A. I’m training for the Kingsguard.”  

The sentry took out a clip board and scrolled through the names.  Nico sighed in relief when the guard picked up a pen and checked his name off the list.

“Right on time,  head through those double doors there to take your photo for your level two identification, and from there, you’ll go to uniforms for your cadet attire.”

“Thank you.”  

“Good luck, kid.”  The guard nodded to him, opening the gate.  

“Thank you, Sir!”  

Nico slid the strap of his bag up higher on his shoulder and stood in amazement as the palace gates opened for him. He took a deep breath and stepped forward.

Nico was officially on palace soil for the first time.  

“Come in Maxwell!”  Riley said when she heard his knock.  

Maxwell smiled as he walked through the door.

“You know, we have to stop meeting this way.”  

Maxwell laughed  but the door remained open for Bertrand to walk through.   Riley tried to hide her annoyance.

“Yes Bertrand, what did I do wrong now?”  

He looked her over.  

“Nothing that I can tell as of yet, but you did just wake up, which already means you have a late start.”  

“Still getting used to the time difference.”  

“That didn’t matter last night when you were at the dive bar drinking with Drake Walker acting like you’re still a college student.”  

“You’re acting like your brother Maxwell wasn’t there too.”

“Little Blossom! Way to throw me under the bus!”

“I feel like I’m the only one taking this whole arrangement seriously, keeping you two in check is like herding cats.”  

“Meow.”  

Maxwell chuckled.  

“Do not encourage her Maxwell.”

Gabriel consoled me as I cried.  

“Are you happy we made it here?”

“Very happy. I promise these are happy tears.   I felt like I was robbed of the opportunity to give her a proper goodbye.”

Gabriel looked visibly hurt by my words. I grabbed his arm to reassure him.  

“It was not your fault, you did what you had to do to keep me safe, to keep us safe.  I understand why you did it.  Though, it still does not sway how I felt and have felt all of these years.  The world should be more evolved, and it’s not. And because it wasn’t, I couldn’t even say a proper farewell to my sister, when I really needed to do it.”  

“The world never changes. Yes, there is a lot more technology now that has made life remarkably easier, but the core of people… never change.  I have walked this earth for long enough to realize that.”

“The things you’ve seen I can’t even imagine, especially in the earlier years.”

“Yes, it was quite a different time. I must leave for a little bit, but I will return shortly, then we will go out for dinner.”  

From the time Gabriel left to the time he returned all I had thought about was Clara and the picture of the two of us.

“I have a present for you.”  

He held out a small wrapped box for me to take.  

“What is this?”  

“Something you really wanted, and deserved to have.”  

“This is so sweet.”  

When I tore open the box, inside, was the framed picture of me and Clara.

“Gabriel….”  

“You deserve more than just to see Clara in only your dreams. This picture should lie with her family and now it does,  and if you look closely, you can see Maxwell in it as well, and he’s looking at Clara, smiling.”  

“He loved her so much.”

“He did. And you can see it as clear as day here.”

The Book: TRF Part 8:  Where Do We Go From Here? The Series:  The Cordonian Arrangement Pairings  Former Riley x Nico (Riley X M!OC)  Liam x Riley? Status:  Still in the writing process.

It was barely dawn and the sun was only creeping slightly through the windows. When she moved, his embrace tightened, pulling her back close to him, leaning in, to kiss her neck. Still waking from her slumber, it felt like a typical morning  that she had lived every day when waking in his arms was commonplace. Riley moaned softly as he continued to gently nibble her neck, pressing her body into his.

“Let’s stay in bed.  Don’t go…." she mumbled in her sleep. “Stay with me.”  

“Always.”  

His voice made her immediately  leave that place of pre woke slumber to soberingly wide awake, quickly pulling away from him.

“Liam….”  

Fully awake, all the memories of the last few months, and from last night flooded back to her in a wave.

Observing the shock and almost disappointment in her eyes, shielding her bare body from him with the sheet, Liam knew.  

“That wasn’t intended for me, was it?”

She didn’t want to lie to him, and she couldn’t look him in the face either.

“No… I’m…. sorry….” She headed towards the door still draped in the sheet from the bed.

“Riley, we need to talk about this.  There’s a reason you came to me last night. It felt right for us to be together that way.”  

“For a brief second, this morning I forgot the horror that has been these last 3 months that has been my life.  Last night, I was lonely… I wanted to feel…. Connected to someone again. I didn’t  mean to give you the wrong idea.”

“Do you regret it?”

“No… I don’t regret it… but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a mistake.  It was a mistake Liam.  We have way too much history for me to think that you would simply be okay with this.”

“We made love last night Riley.”

“We… didn’t.  It was just sex.  I’m still in love with my husband.” Glancing down at her ring on her finger that she was still wearing.

“Your husband is dead.”  

Riley gasped in shock.  Liam immediately wanted to take the words back.  

“Who are you?”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like it came out Riley. Forgive me, I didn’t mean it Riley. I promise you I didn’t.”

“Get out of my house.”

“Riley…. We’re supposed to take Angelo to the zoo today.”

Day 1: Movie Night

Shadow took a deep breath as he stood at the door of Team Darks home. There were obvious noises coming from within but thought it better not to eavesdrop on what seemed like a heated discussion. He knocks at the door and all noises inside come to a sudden stop before the echoes of an argument about who would answer the door followed by loud movement approaching.

The door abruptly opens as Rouge was the one who answers. “Good evening Shadow.” She said happily. Shadow could obviously hear Sonic in the background… it sounded like he was struggling.

“Hello Rouge… Is Sonic alright?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Oh he’s fine!” She waves her hand at him. “You two are having a movie night right?”  

“Yes,” Shadow said.

“What movie?” She asked,

“We haven’t decided yet… It there something you wanted to say?” Shadow said. This was starting to sound more like an interrogation.

“Nothing at all, you two have fun.” She gives him a wink. “Omega, you can let blue go now.” A blue blur appears next to her looking angrily.

“You can go now.” Sonic snarled as she pats his head.

“Alright, don’t be so uptight Hun. You two have fun, Let’s go Omega.” Rouge grabs her things before walking out the door. Omega followed after her but stops next to Shadow.  

“HE DOES NOT LIKE ROMANCE MOVIES. THEY MOVE TOO SLOW.” Omega said.

“Thanks for the heads up.” Shadow said walking inside as they leave closing the door behind them.

“Sorry about that, Rouge likes to be overbearing…” Sonic chuckles awkwardly.

“Did you tell them?”

“What? No, You asked me not to. But I can’t control what they think. A movie night is definitely suspicious.” Sonic joked as they walk into the living room. Shadow nods, he wanted to keep their relationship private for now since it is so new. “So what movie do you want to watch?”

“Well, seeing as it’s October,” Shadow pulls out some movies, “I though something scary would be fun.”

“Great idea! Pick one randomly and I’ll grab the popcorn!” Sonic said excitedly. He goes over to the kitchen while Shadow picked a movie and popped it into the player. Sitting on the plush couch taking in team darks subtle but very nice décor. He assumed was due to Rouge’s impeccable taste.

His thoughts are interrupted by Sonic jumping onto the couch next to him as some pieces of popcorn escape the bowl. “Sorry!” Sonic chuckles as he brushes the pieces out of Shadow’s quills then getting comfortable nuzzling in close.

“Ready?” Shadow asked as Sonic nods before shoving his face full of popcorn and Shadow starts the movie.

Day 2: Stargazing

So My brain ran wild with this prompt. **If you are not caught up to chapter 24 of Tides of Chaos this may contain spoilers but vague ones I believe...**

Sonic basked in the fresh ocean air in the late evening. Most of the crew was asleep and Sonic had asked to chill in the crow’s nest for a bit to look at the stars. To think that not too long ago he believed the crew of the Final Hazard would eat him. Now he walks amongst the crew as if he were one of them. Even becoming friends with Shadow…

He had become so accommodating to him lately. Noticeably so… Ever since Shadow had opened up about Maria he began to see it. His own thoughts were swimming thinking about the vampiric captain. The small gestures, smoother tone to his voice… That dance…

“Omega told me you were up here.” Sonic practically yelps not expecting to see Shadow appear only a few feet from him. He could feel his face becoming hot and was thankful it was dark. “Is everything alright?”

“Y…yeah, you scared me. I just wanted to see the stars for a bit.” Sonic said composing himself. “Seeing them reflected off the ocean when it’s this calm is really something.”

“Stargazing is one of the reasons I enjoy being on the ocean. The major cities are becoming too bright with their constant lanterns. It’s impossible to see the stars.” Shadow said.

Sonic glanced over seeing the soft smile Shadow gave as he was glancing up at the sky, the reflections of starlight twinkle against his ruby eyes.

Oh…

“Glad we’re able to see it like this.” Sonic said looking back up at the sky.

“I agree, you can see the constellation of Light Gaia and Dark Gaia clearly.” Shadow said,

“I don’t think I know that one.” Sonic said.

Shadow leans closer, pointing up into the sky. Tracing with his finger the outline of the two constellations. “There, and there.  They look like they are about to fight. Do you see?” Shadow asked as Sonic felts Shadow’s shoulder brush up against his own.

Oh no…

His heart began to race at the realization of how close they were. It didn’t seem that Shadow minded the contact. Why was he just now putting the pieces together? He’s the fastest thing alive why did it take him this long to figure it out?

He has feelings for Shadow.

“Y… Yeah! I think I do?” Sonic stammered as he tries to keep his eyes on the sky. He had completely missed Shadow’s gestures to the stars but didn’t want to show his thoughts were otherwise occupied.

“You’re a terrible liar.” Shadow huffed. Lightly tilting Sonic’s head up higher before tracing the forms again. A grouping of stars in similar size. One more of a serpent visage and the other more boxy.

“Oh! I see it!” Sonic said sounding proud of himself. “Thanks,” Sonic smiles brightly as Shadow looks away.

“Would you… like company?” Shadow asked.

“Sure! Any other constellations you know about?” Sonic said as Shadow nods.

“One moment.” Shadow disappears in a mist before returning with a blanket he hands to Sonic, “Don’t need you catching a cold.” Sonic smiles taking the blanket and laying down on the ground of the crow’s nest patting next to him for Shadow to join.

Shadow smiles back before laying next to him and starts explaining the stars to him as Sonic listened intently with a smile on his face. Occasionally stealing glances at Shadow.

I hope you enjoyed! I realized we knew when Shadow realized his feelings but never truly Sonic so this is kinda that.

Day 13: Werehog

Shadow a shocking discovery

Shadow had not expected this… Sure, he had seen Grey transform into a Werewolf… but seeing Sonic turn into a Werehog? That was new…

He was unsure to why he had started to act differently, he chalked it up to them being apart for such a long time. And it was only now that the pieces of Sonic’s increased strange behavior came to a boil on the night of the full moon. And now he was face to face with a killing machine that just stared down at him with solid black eyes.

But this form of his was different than Grey’s; there were glowing neon markings around his face that looked familiar, but he couldn’t entirely place them.

Sonic’s snarl snaps Shadow back into the present moment. He hesitates at reaching for his blade. Silver is deadly especially to Werewolves… He could never harm Sonic… Even if it would save his own life.

He freezes as Sonic’s now longer snout sniffs him curiously. He waits to see how this was going to end for him as he’s pushed to the ground.

A cold tongue drags against his cheek as Sonic’s larger form had him pinned to the ground. He blinks a few times as he comes to the realization that it was a slobbery kiss. And was his tail wagging?

“Sonic?” Shadow asked getting a response with another wet kiss as he now sees Sonic’s eyes were no longer black but back to their beautiful emerald green as he looked down at him happily. Sonic nuzzles into Shadow’s chest before flopping down with a sleepy yawn and dozing off… Leaving Shadow to lie there in total bewilderment, unsure as to what he just witnessed…

“What in Chaos is going on?”

PART 01 - THE 11 FACTS ABOUT ME:

01. My favorite activity is sleeping.

02. Sometimes i like to look at my horoscope to see what gets right and what gets wrong about my personality. I’m a Taurus.

03. About animals: I have a huge phobia of frogs. And i once raised a brown stick insect as a pet, because i watched Pixar’s A Bug’s Life a lot.

04. My favorite colors are: silver, black, blue, green, lilac purple, violet and orange.

05. I enjoy listen to classical music, and i love to watch/watching ópera and ballet. One of my first fanfics was a (terribly writen) two chapter sequel story to Giácomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. My favorite ópera is Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore. My favorite ballet is Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

06. I sometimes dream/wish to have a Youtube channel to post AMVs and review books, movies and TV shows.

07. I started writing because i once haved the dream of become a screen writer for telenovelas (the latin equivalent os soap operas).

PART 02 - ANSWERING 21 QUESTIONS

01. The book that transformed your life?

 I think it was probably Voltaire’s Candide. This book is a tragicomic story about a ragtag bunch of misfits who were raised as rich priviliged people that believed that everything was alright in the world, and have their visions shaked when they lose everything, so they must get united and adapt to their new reality to get into a happy ending. The message i take of that story is: “Yes, the world is shitty. Out there are lots of people who will exploit and hurt you. So learn to count with your friends, be kind to one another, and keep living and moving on”.

02. The movie that changed your way of seeing the world?

 Walt Disney’s Fantasia. This experiment to give visuals to  classical music trough classical music formed my believe that we must keep blurring the lines between popular and erudite arts, and all art should be acessible to al people.

03. The music that makes part of the soundtrack of your life?

I tend to say that Mägo de Oz’s ‘Danza del Fuego’ is the song that would be the opening of a series about my life.

04. Define longing?

A word that sound better as the portuguese ‘saudade’.

05. If you got back in time, wich scene would you visit of your life?

I would go back to 2008, and say to my 10 year old self how to give some improvements to its writing. 

06. The place where your heart is.

The beaches.

Probably Umberto Eco. I reded two books of him, and i got curious to know more of his work.

Tea. Specially of mint. 

10. Who's your Doctor (if you don't watch Doctor Who, who's your favorite character from a TV series)? 

Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), from seasons Seven to Eight, and Eight Doctor (Paul Mcgann), from the 1996 TV Movie.

11. If you could just throw everything away and live your dream, what would you do?

No idea, really. 

12. If you could choose to be a character from a book, TV series or movie, who you would be?

Probably the Doctor. He is a self regenariting (shape shifter) imortal alien who can travel to anywhere in time and space. How not to choose to be it?

13. What makes you don't like a story?

If everything is grimm dark and the characters are boring, i don’t have any will to continue reading or watching it. 

14. Do you like romance in stories? Why?

If i feel that the couple is health together and have good chemistry, even if is not the focus of the main plot, i find that it can be a nice way to humanize characters, showing how its lifes are outside of the intense action. 

15. Wich book did you hated having read?

Sons of Lilith: The Awakening by Elaine Velasco has a character who is a vampire that doesn’t want to give away killing humans to drink their blood, but them says he is in favour of life while massacring the people in a clandestine abortion clinic (which, i have to remember, can save several teenage girls victims of sexual abuse from dying of a risk pregnancy). I tought ‘What’? and ended up really hating this book because of that character.

16. Wich movie did you hated having watched?

 A brazilian movie Wolf at the Door. All the characters were assholes, and i left the movie felling really miserable.

17. Do you like anime/manga? Any favorite?

I love it. My favorite mangas are probably Legend of Kamui (Sanpei Shirato), Árion (Yoshikazu Yasuhiko) and Evil Crusher Maya (Masami Kurumada). My favorite animes are Saint Seiya, Tenkuu Senki Shurato, The Rose of Versailles and Ashita no Joe.

18. Who is the best villain you saw in a story?

Probably Claude Frollo, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Before the recent fever of catholic priests involved on sex abuse scandals apearing on the TV news, Victor Hugo was already denouncing it with that creep.

19. If you could do an interview with any person, alive or dead, from our world, who would you choose and why?

Mary Shelley (british writer), Frida Kahlo (mexican painter) and Violeta Parra (chilean folclorist and musician). I consider them to be very complex people and fascinating artistic role models.

20. If you could meet and and befriend a writer, who would be?

My lady, Mary Shelley. 

21. Cats or dogs?

Cats. They kill rats for you and are more independent.

22. If you could choose any time period or society to live, wich it would be?

A utopic future with vaccins for every desease ever.

Summaries of Unwritten Books

Remember when I said I had many planned writing projects that were still unfinished (and in some cases unstarted) years later?  Well here are the main ones, in chronological order of conception.  The first summary grew so long I had to shelve it and write a very succinct overview.

Xi is a nerve-wracking technological thriller in four parts.  The setting is a planet not unlike our own, with a seemingly organized society and global government.  The heroes are conspiracy theorists, hackers, and underground revolutionaries, while the enemy is a gigantic faceless organization enacting a secret plan that will spell the end of human freedom.  I fear these books would've been more popular if I'd published them at the Turn of the Millennium (which was when I conceived and plotted them).  In basic terms Xi is The X-Files without aliens.

Gêkí is a post-apocalyptic neo-mythical saga featuring the last surviving member of a noble clan of warriors.  As in many of my fictional settings there's a lot of weird science that's barely distinguishable from magic.  I created the main character, the setting, and some other elements for a novel I was working on in 1999 that would've brought my hard S.F. space exploration series to post-apocalyptic Earth.  That novel and series has been on indefinite hiatus since the summer of '03, and I basically forgot about this spinoff for years.  Fairly recently a friend read a scene I wrote for Gêkí and urged me to complete the novel.  The plan before was for Gêkí to have a frame story set in the "present" and three major flashbacks detailing how our hero got to that point in his life.  The relevant parts of the abandoned novel could be boiled down to a fourth flashback (preferably without involving other planets).  Otherwise I could just put the whole book in chronological order like a normal author.  In basic terms Gêkí is Star Wars meets The Dying Earth.

Truelove is a teen supernatural romance that began as a subplot in one of the Xi books but is now a separate project set on present day Earth.  "Present day" is 2004 because that's when I expected to finish the rough draft (which still isn't finished).  The plot centers around the main character's "imaginary" friend from childhood who returns nine years later as a new (and very real) student at her school.  He wants to make her life better, but she must never tell anyone that he's not what he appears and never acknowledge that anything strange is happening.  Their close bond turns to romance.  Negative elements in her live miraculously disappear one by one, but the changes to material reality and the townspeople's collective memories start to add up, and disaster looms.  Truelove is either two short novels or one long novel with two distinct halves.  The first is set in a fictional Midwestern town (my writing has a lot of these) and could be described as a high school drama, while the second half takes place mostly in other dimensions and is something akin to space opera.  It's one of those science-fantasies where everything fantastical has a scientific explanation (explicated or implied).  In basic terms Truelove is Twilight with the Q Continuum instead of Vampires.  It's better than it sounds.

Much of my art coexists (or could be made to fit) in a fictional universe I vaguely defined in 2006 and would like to showcase in a book.  The universe was originally called Dreamtime, a placeholder name I didn't really like.  It's now called Shadow Earth or Sciagæa, which I also don't like.  Possible titles for the book are Lamplight Illuminations and Inverted Omega (Ʊ).  It would be a heavily illustrated pseudononfiction book in the tradition of Wayne Douglas Barlowe, Stewart Cowley, and Brian Froud.  The main character is a fictionalized version of myself, and the premise is that I discovered a weak spot in the time-space fabric in an empty parking lot in my seemingly mundane Midwestern hometown.  Through this I made mental contact with a planet that occupies Earth's place in another universe.  The book exposits and illustrates the information and imagery I picked up before the time-space wound healed over.  The foreboding final chapter would be about a possible incursion from the other world into our own.  In basic terms Lamplight Illuminations is a more advanced version of my Deviantart gallery.

The Man from the Man from Mars (which is not a typo) was conceived in 2013, making it my newest major writing project.  It's also the only one that's really a comedy.  It's about a group of ordinary people in a nondescript Midwestern town who end up saving the world.  The plot involves an alien, a transformed human, a crystallizing plague known as the Sparkly Death, and a whole lot of other junk.  It would work best as a graphic novel, but that depends on me finding a collaborator who knows how to make one of those.  It's most likely to end up a novella, preferably with many illustrations.  In basic terms The Man from the Man from Mars is a Fifties monster movie with the brain of a Nineties comedy.

Today we discuss how and when to use fluff words or filler words in your story. Choosing the right method can be the difference between a best selling novel and a book that never gets published. The results were mixed, which I was expecting. What bothered me the most, though, was that the words used weren’t the right words. Today, I want to cover this little test and explain how and when to use the right words when you are filling out your story. Stay tuned, I’ll be right back. 00:34 01:01 Here is what I am going to do. I will recap the scene writing test for those of you that want to play along. I will set up the scene as I did for the students and explain what you need to do. If you want to play along, you can then pause the podcast while you write out your words. If you do not want to play along, then there is no need to pause the podcast. However, you are boring and you will have to bring your own snacks to our future parties.   Let Me Set the Scene 01:32 Ready? Okay. The scene takes place in the middle of a suspenseful thriller novel. We are nearing the climax of the main plot, where the protagonist is heading into the antagonist’s hideout for the big confrontation.

Abandoned lots can be cool... or creepy 01:48 This particular scene starts with the main character driving to an old, abandoned shopping mall. It is mid-day but the weather is dreary. In our rough draft, we have the protag driving up, parking in the parking lot and heading inside the mall. This is the part we need to add more words to. 02:13 Your job is to write this part of the scene, from the car entering the area and parking in the parking lot. I want you to describe the parking lot for the reader. 02:26 If you are playing along, go ahead and pause the podcast and get to work. If you are not playing along, I’m still mad at you and giving you a dirty look that you can’t see because this isn’t video.   Shall We Evaluate Your Work? 02:41 And we are back. Through the magic of audio, we have just traveled in time to a point where you have the assignment completed. For you it was several minutes, but for me it was a fraction of a second. I am an expert time traveler, so don’t try this at home.

Did you add the stray cat looking for food in your fluff and filler? 02:56 Now, before I tell you that you did this wrong, I am going to make a few guesses. Let’s see. You wrote about the deserted lot with the cracked and uneven pavement. You may have talked about how much grass or weeds are growing up through the asphalt. You might have mentioned the parking lot lights that are not working, maybe flickering, or the lenses are shattered and broken glass covers the ground. 03:28 Maybe you went into detail about the sounds the tires made as the main character drove slowly through the abandoned black top and that they didn’t worry about parking between the lines that are faded with time and exposure to the elements. 03:44 If I had to guess, you have between 200 and 500 words written about this parking lot. Maybe more. Am I close? Did you try extra hard to make this parking lot come to life? Maybe you threw in a few random animals running around or looking for nibbles?   You Probably Did it Wrong 04:07 If so, then you did it wrong. Don’t worry. It is a good exercise and if you concentrated on making that mental movie projector in your reader’s mind come on, good job. The problem here, is that you missed the entire point of this scene. 04:30 The scene takes place, if you recall, as we approach the climax. The hero is about to square off against the villain. The reader has been waiting for this confrontation for 200 or so pages, and you want to slow the whole thing down to accurately describe a fucking parking lot? 04:51 Fluff and filler do have their place. There are scenes and situations when we need to be more descriptive and poetic in our words. There are certain scenes when we need to stretch a two-sentence description into a three-page filler. This test, though, is not one of those times.   Fluff and Filler can be Too Much 05:15 One of the biggest mistakes I see is that writer’s want to fluff and fill every single page. This is nice in the beginning of the book, where you are bringing the reader into the world. Their entry point needs to be a nice landing (or a very sharp and abrupt one, depending on your mood).

Adding fluff and filler can be good, when done correctly. 05:39 As we ease them into the lives of our characters and they get to know everyone around and the actions these people are taking, our readers cherish fluffy scenes full or poetry and details. 05:54 As the story moves along, though, you need to get your ass in gear. If you have a reader so hooked that they are turning pages fast enough to start a fire, and you throw 300 words at them about a parking lot, you are going to piss off a lot of people.   Decide Where to Fluff and Fill 06:12 The first step in knowing which words to use and when to fluff or fill, is knowing what is at stake. The one thing you cannot do is get these massive story wheels rolling downhill and then slam on the breaks. Perhaps the only thing that will close a book faster is writing about shiny vampires. 06:38 Unless you, too, are marketing to 12 year-old girls who still write tiny hearts instead of a dot over their i’s, each scene will dictate what needs fluff and filler and what needs to get the fuck on with it, already.   Creating a Fluff and Filler Formula 06:54 Let’s see if we can find some winning formula. Of course, your own writing style, as well as the genre, purpose of your book and the scene you are writing will all dictate what needs to be said, there are some basic guidelines we can use. 07:12 First, let’s grab the old dictionary and define these terms. Fluff is the use of poetry and prose to lengthen or expand a sentence. I refer you to the common “show versus tell” example from Anton Chekhov. “Don’t tell me the moon is shining, show me the glint of light on the broken glass.” 07:42 This is an example of fluff. Filler is using extra words to say the same thing without being flowery. To piggyback from Chekhov, instead of fluff, the sentence with filler would be: Don’t tell me the moon is full, show me the light through a window. 08:08 Neither example is wrong. Neither is right. It is a matter of what you are writing and how important it is to the story. You will hear a lot of old timers telling you to move the story forward. Every word should push the reader to the next one.

Always work to move your story forward. The right speed and cadence is mandatory. 08:28 To an extent, I agree with this. However, there also needs to be a welcoming, comforting feeling to your book. So, we start our books with the proper landing for the reader. You have to remember, our story takes place at a certain point along a timeline. The characters were doing their thing long before page one, and will continue to do their thing long after the end of that story.   Think Like a Reader 09:03 As the writer, you decide where the story starts. It should be in a spot along that timeline where the reader can be dropped in safely. You want them to have the time and opportunity to get to know their new surroundings, meet their new friends and understand what is going on (the plot) and why it is happening (the stakes). 09:32 In these chapters fluff is more prevalent that filler. We ease them into our story and writing style. We start giving them questions they need to have answered and this is what propels the story forward. 09:50 By the time our main character pulls into that abandoned parking lot, the stakes are too high, the plot is at its peak and the reader doesn’t need or want your fluffy words. 10:04 You still have to set the scene, of course, but now is when fluff is eliminated and filler is only used on an as-needed basis. Is it important that the parking lot is abandoned? Not at all. We can add a broken down truck to the middle of the lot if we wanted. We can add all the broken glass that cracks under the main characters feet as they rush to the boarded up front doors of the mall. 10:34 We can use these filler words to show the truck and the broken glass, or the weeds, or those branches from last weeks storm. The best way to do it, though, is to have the character notice them. Perhaps she checks the truck for a weapon or to make sure no one is hiding near it. You can put that dilapidated truck in the lot, but it doesn’t need to be poetic or take up 2 pages of the climax. Get on with the story!   It's a Roller Coaster!

Picture your plot line as a roller coaster. 11:10 After the climax, when we are coming down the other side of that story arc, we can once again make the landing a bit softer. Of course you want to be careful here, too. Too much fluff and filler can lead to a bad ending. 11:28 I always like to imagine my story is a roller coaster. At this point the giant loop-de-loop is over and the reader is trying to catch their breath and slow their heart rate. I may throw in a few small turns on the roller coaster track, but nothing too serious. 11:48 Filler works well here, instead of fluff. It is still soft and welcoming, but it's not enveloping. If we go right from the climax where fluff and filler are nearly non-existent, and start using a lot of fluff again, the landing will be too jarring. Ease your reader into that next slow turn before you ramp it up again.   Trial and Error and Beta Readers 12:19 Playing with fluff and filler can be difficult. This is where trial and error along with utilizing Beta readers, will come in to play. The best course, though, is to picture yourself as the reader along this journey you are creating. 12:40 Start by giving them the absolute essentials; location, time of day, clothing, vocabulary, a mission. From there, decide how much of that scene needs to be expanded. You want to make each scene inviting and complete, but if it stall the story, then less is more. 13:05 Play around with your descriptions and actions, along with your dialog.
