The sky was darker than usual. The new moon made the night gloomier and the stars seemed to lack their usual brightness due to its absence, which was strange that close to midnight. Maybe it was due to the cold autumn wind that had risen in the Mountains of Mist and brought some clouds with it, maybe due to the light cast by the streetlights, lamps and cars’ headlights, maybe because the tall buildings wouldn’t let anyone see anything beyond them no matter how much they tried. And if Tar Valon was famous for something, it was its glorious buildings and the insane amount of people that lived there, making it one of the most crowded places in the world.

Or: Siuan's a vampire, Moiraine's a witch, they have spicy sex.

Moiraine being 70 vs 40

(Alright this one took me a minute because corralling my thoughts is a challenge in the best of times.)

To begin with I will admit... I am one of the people who was indifferent towards the age change in the beginning. They're Aes Sedai, they live nice, long lives, and I wasn't like, emotionally attached to a younger, canon-aged Moiraine. It does make her early years more poignant, but I'll touch on that later.

Primed for older Moiraine, the show started and after two seasons I can safely say I am so gung-ho for 70 year old Moiraine I might actually be feral.

Here's why I, personally, think it was an excellent choice: Rosamund Pike is 44 as of writing this, so she visibly fits into the book age. As an audience nobody is really questioning her age - a few show-onlys I watched season 1 with actually remarked on how refreshing it was to see an older female character allowed to just exist and be part of the narrative without trying to sex up and/or grandma-ize the role.

Little Did They Know.

So you've got an audience that's mostly accepting of this character being in her 40s, and then you hit them with "Oh she's 70 and lets explore just how horrific that fact actually is together, it'll be fun!"

It was not fun, it was gutting.

One of my main critiques of the book has always been how we have these long-lived women, powerful women... but we never really take much of a look at the reality of that concept. Nor are we given POV characters who are really old enough to remark on it. Pevara at least thinks about her family, but Cadsuane doesn't give two figs about hers.

And here's the thing... they're Aes Sedai, but they're still human. What happens to them as they get older, but the people who fill their life are the ones aging? How does it feel to watch a mother, a sister, a child, friends, acquaintances, EVERYONE succumb to time in a way you won't for a very long time after?

That has to be impactful and I wanted to see those stories - and the show delivered. Seeing Moiraine with Anvaere? Chilling, horrifying, heartbreaking. Liandrin and her boy? A kick in the teeth. Even Alanna with her family, knowing very well she's probably the oldest one sitting at that table.

The point is, being an Aes Sedai means being powerful and respected, but it also means living through a very specific kind of suffering and trauma. They're basically vampires in terms of lifespan and we should see how that shapes them.

In regards to Moiraine being older and therefore not basically a child during the foretelling, it does change that particular hit... but by no means did the show let the viewers not understand how that moment altered Moiraine's life forever.

Instead of her being sort of an unformed girl hardened and honed by a lifetime of searching for Rand, one who never got much chance to be anything else, we get a woman who was already beginning to build her life, who had achieved the shawl, found love, and was exactly where she wanted to be.

And then all of that is taken from her.

It's devastating to watch the double-barreled whammy of Siuan and Moiraine giggling about being fishwives and walking into what was in many ways their deaths. Because the Moiraine and Siuan they were before walking into that room were gone forever. They would never be able to go back to the women they were before. They never even had a chance to mourn that loss. Moiraine went hunting and Siuan set her sights on the Amyrlin Seat.

I do understand for a lot of people her age is a sticking point, and that is completely fair and valid! It's a change that I fully agree did not need to be made... but by making that change we're given such a stark insight into the lives of older Aes Sedai who are just beginning to experience what it means to outlive everyone they know, watching one by one as cherished friends and family members pass on.

Soon all they have left are the children and grandchildren of those people, fractured mirrors that are just enough of a hint at the original that it must be painful to know them - which explains even further why so many Aes Sedai cut off contact entirely with their families. It's too painful to keep them in their lives.

So even if we have such characters as Serena Joy or Lord Asriel, they can be gay or bi [openly or not], or straight. I like to play with that form in various stories. 

4. When it comes to smut, rule number one: +20 muns and muses only. If you came here for this sort of entertainment, I’ll say look for it somewhere else. I’m ok with writing it - from time to time and when it feels right. It will be under a read more and tagged as ‘nsfw’. I feel like it may be fade to black most of the time, though.

He shows up in town because things were getting a little too hot back in Two Rivers and he needed to get out of dodge before somebody figured out he was just a bit too lucky.

Only he immediately stumbles into the most beautiful and terrifying woman he's ever met in his life, Tuon. She's in half his college classes and can go from heavily flirting to throwing things at a moments notice.

He finds out from local gossip she's part of the Jordan family, headed by a pair of local lesbians who adopted a gaggle of kids, bought an old mansion, and also live with their brother-in-law and his children.

It wouldn't be weird except they're all fucking weird as shit. And Mat is like "HELLO??? ARE YOU NOT SEEING THIS?"

Moiraine is a trusted doctor, talented and dedicated to her work as a psychiatrist. Her wife Siuan is a well-known architect. Except they both say cryptic shit all the time - even more once they realize Mat is On To Them. They have an answer for everything too, and memories that are a little bit too perfect. (Mat thinks they might be spies.)

Moiraine's brother Lan (which, Mat does NOT buy that story at all) doesn't talk much and works for a local charity, but one time Mat catches him doing swordforms in his backyard like it's normal and he has way more knowledge about history than he bloody well should.

(And Mat for lack of anything better to choose is a history major.)

And his wife Nynaeve is terrifying and also conveniently a doctor even though she looks like she's barely 20. She's sure fun to annoy though, gets mad as hell.

Anyway Mat being Mat and suspicious of, well, everything, is convinced something is going on with the Jordan family and he cannot stand not knowing what it is.

He tries befriending Rand and Perrin, and it sort of works, but every ten minutes it feels like Rand abruptly shuts his mouth and gets a little green around the gills until Perrin makes excuses for them to leave. Perrin is okay, but he bluntly said he's Not Getting Involved in whatever Tuon and Mat are doing.

Which, they're doing something. Mat doesn't know what.

Sometimes he leaves class and she's sitting on his car with a bunch of tarot cards. Sometimes she shows up at his stupid job at the local dude ranch and asks him weird questions in between sniffing his hair and calling him pretty. Other times she pretends he doesn't exist.

Rand's... girlfriend(s)? (Mat doesn't know what is happening there either) all think it's hilarious. Min and Elayne are also enrolled in the local college, the other one Aviendha is a bartender who threw out his fake ID the first week in town (rude), but they're cagey when it comes to Tuon and their lives.

At least Perrin's girlfriend Faile is normal terrifying. She works at the stable and yells at him a lot but that's really it.

Mat pairs up with local menace Egwene who also finds the Jordan family to be Sketch As Heck. She works at the governor's office as an intern and is furious that a simple inquiry about the Jordans got her in trouble so yeah, she's very on board with Digging Up Dirt.

At some point Elayne's estranged brother Gawyn shows up and almost eats Egwene and Mat on accident.

Here is where Tuon would suck out the vampire poison and Mat would be a Real Boy still but come on, it's Tuon.

She'd suck out the poison alright but would put her own right back in because Mat is hers to turn.

Also there is no Jacob because Tuon would just kill the competition. Like. She would not even play.
