Review : The Lighthouse (2019)
Last year, I found myself pleasantly surprised in regards to my choice of top film of the year. Ari Aster’s brilliantly disturbing masterpiece Hereditary left a lasting impression on me, and part of that impression was how I spent the day preparing myself. I was rediscovering my lost love for horror films, and I took the opportunity to mentally prep myself by watching The VVitch, another first feature from director Robert Eggers. Though the films have nearly nothing in common, these two directors have always been tied to one another, so when Aster hit another home run with Midsommar, I knew that Eggers probably had something special in the works. The hype machine proved me right, as the initial word from The Lighthouse was that it was something akin to an experience more so than a simple viewing, and with it finally hitting the Alamo Drafthouse in my neck of the woods, I definitely took advantage of a chance to check it out.
Two men (Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattison) are tasked with the maintenance and upkeep of a lighthouse on the coast of New England for a period of four weeks. The younger of the two men, Ephraim Winslow, finds a miniature statue of a mermaid inside of the mattress of his bunk that he decides to stash in his jacket pocket. The older of the two men, Thomas Wake, spends his days degrading and ordering Winslow around, and he spends his nights at the peak of the lighthouse, manning the beacon. Winslow, who has hopes of manning the light himself, grows tired of the constant bullying and storytelling from Wake, especially the cautionary and superstitious tales meant to keep Winslow in line. Tension grows between the two men while the weeks progress, and Winslow finds himself at the end of his rope, eventually killing a seagull in a very vicious manner despite the warnings from Wake. At the end of the four week period, the men find themselves stranded in a storm on the island, unsure of if or when they will be able to leave. With supplies running low, and tensions running high, the two mens’ attempts to stave off madness become an all consuming battle.
This movie falls somewhere between modern-day ghost story and visual fever dream... think The Odd Couple meets Jacob’s Ladder. The basis of the story and it’s underlying character tension is a simple one : youthful pride and short-sighted decision-making faces stone-hardened wisdom and experience, only to be forced to deal with the consequences of their reward. The layers of visual and narrative trickery that this film employs, however, are disorienting (albeit subtly so), to the point where you find yourself questioning much of the riddle you were just presented with. The narrative A-B-C’s are easy enough to follow and comprehend, and the story is extremely satisfying, but the massive numbers of questions that arise upon reflection are all completely valid.
Robert Eggers is a deliberate mastercraftsman, as The VVitch and The Lighthouse display via their use of studied-but-skewed language, as well as extremely real surroundings for his characters to inhabit. Eggers also has an extremely unique way of employing coloquial tales for the times that his films take place in, and making sure that that application fits original canon while pushing the edge of their characteristics. The main example of this in The Lighthouse would be the presence of the mermaid, an obvious symbol of Winslow’s sexual frustration caused by the position and his lifestyle choices, and the way it blurs into the siren of the sea, a clear harbinger of death and destruction to come. This visual imagery, as strong and diverse as it is in the film, is far from the sole legendary character that has representation in this wonderfully crazy film.
The use of an alternating aspect ratio is a subtle touch that helps confuse and obscure the presentation, keeping us as viewers unsure of what’s real and what’s imagined. The frames are also wonderfully balanced and picturesque, especially when the aspect ratio is in frame, ironically enough... the majority use of frame aspect ratio also lends itself to the claustrophobic tension present between the characters. The sound design is massive and intrusive, keeping a feeling of uneasiness running steady as the sea, and equally unpredictable. The fantasy elements are sewn into the narrative purposefully, with many elements that are introduced via visions eventually blurring the lines of reality with their presence. If you’re a fan of pressure cooker films or films that portray a descent into madness, this one will be a slam dunk.
The minimal cast is highly effective, especially with the level of acting chops that are present. Willem Dafoe was clearly given a handful of character concepts to work with, but for the most part, it seems he had a green light to dive into the world of eccentricity. His dialect is a mixture of the best parts of several sea-wary character tropes, and his disdain for the youth and unearned desires of his partners makes him a formidable and mighty protagonist. Robert Pattison, on the other hand, gives a wonderfully powerful performance drenched with pride founded in treachery, with a short fuse that stays dangerously close to blowing up being held at bay for as long as a fragile man can hold it back. His eventual undoing is one of the more captivating displays of a broken man committed to the big screen, with the fear of the viewer taking a backseat to the wonder and curiosity of just how undone his character will become.
I wasn’t sure what I was getting into before viewing The Lighthouse, and in the wake of seeing it, the only thing I know is that it will take several more viewings to really and truly understand what I was presented with. There is no question, however, that I enjoyed what I saw, that I will own it when given the chance, and that this film will more than likely find a spot near the top of my year end list.
