Some scenes I had in mind when I drew angry Malleus in the sketch, The Lonely Little Prince

Original Concept:

A young noble played a cruel prank on Malleus and pretended to invite him to a party he wasn't invited to. He and Lilia weren't fooled but the little prince's budding hope for companionship overshadowed his wariness. Seeing the truth in front of his eyes, he was furious.

Revised Concept:

Malleus decided to take a walk to stave off boredom and isolation after Lilia had briefly left due to a royal decree. A young noble child mistakenly invited Malleus to a party after misidentifying him with another noble they briefly met at a soirée. Little Malleus gathered flowers from his garden as a kind gift and gesture for his very first invitation! On the day of the party, the noble's guardian apologized for their child's mistake and told him the truth; after all, how could a child of an outskirt fiefdom lord dare invite a royal like Malleus? Seeing an ocean of flames, Lilia rushed toward the furious fae prince, ordering the Briar Knights to get the people to safety. As the fire receded, the despondent prince bore the shame of his rage.

Throwback Thursday #57!- Kissing Book- Lines and Color (1999- Magic Marker Records)

Man, it’s hard to believe that this debut record by Portland, Oregon’s Kissing Book is now 25 years old. I remember when the record came out  (Magic Marker 004) and it was a favorite then and is still a favorite that gets played fairly often.

The main man here is songwriter Andrew Kaffer on vocals, guitar and organ (and IIRC that is his brother Mike on drums) along with lots of other folks adding this and that. The songs range from softer folky tunes like opener “On the Third Time” to the more effervescent cuts like “Should’ve Seen Us Yesterday”  to things smack dab in the middle like “Everyday Is Valentines Day” (opening line, “I got some construction paper and some glue, I got some glitter and some stars, too…” ) which is an airy cut with that righteous organ and Kaffer’s cool-as-a-cucumber vocals.

Also, “Sad City is a hand-clappin’, doot-doot-doo kinda cut and “Hold Your Head Up” had an almost jazzy swing to it.  Oh and “Some Girls Don’t Speak” might be my favorite of all the songs on here.

So between the great songs, the perfect recording by The Minders Martyn Leaper, and the excellent liner notes by The Lucksmiths’ Marty Donald, Lines and Color is a bonafide thumper and still sounds great two and a half decades later.
