In the shrinking sunlight of early October, life in Central Appalachia's forests and fields shows no signs of slowing down. A proliferation of asters and goldenrods fuels an insect feeding frenzy, at the same time ensuring that a late season eruption of seeds before the first frost will bring new life in the spring. From top: dog tooth lichen (Peltigera canina), also known as felt lichen, whose lobes are tipped by red apothecia ; large cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon), which dot wet mountain meadows and bogs; crooked-stemmed aster (Symphyotrichum prenanthoides); brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba), which blooms later than black-eyed Susan and has three-lobed basal leaves; a bumblebee (Bombus) taking nectar from purple-stemmed aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum), also known as swamp aster; an American hoverfly (Eupeodes americanus) similarly drinking from purple-stemmed aster; blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium); question mark butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis); and wrinkleleaf goldenrod (Solidago rugosa), also known as rough-leaf goldenrod.

Everything You Need to Know About Veggies and Fruits: Cranberries
Cranberry (Vaccinium Macrocarpon)
*Kitchen *Medical *Feminine
Tumblr media
Folks Names: Bog fruit, Marshworts
Planet: Mars
Element: Water (juice), Fire (berry)
Deities: Astarte, Marjatta,
Abilities: Healing, Protection, Love, Lust, Positive Energy, Courage, Passion, Action
Characteristics: Native to Eastern North America and northern Asia. Small, slender, evergreen shrub growing to 1 ft with oval, dark green leaves, pink flowers and round/slightly pear-shaped red berries.
History: This jewel-toned gem of the bog is native to North America and a traditional food from Samhain through Yule. Its association with the American Thanksgiving meal is long rooted in tradition, but there is no historical evidence proving it was actually served at that first Thanksgiving celebrated by the Pilgrims. Despite this, cranberry something or other is commonly found on Thanksgiving and Christmas feast tables all across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Cranberry garlands made by stringing hundreds of the hard round red berries with a needle onto a long sturdy string is a traditional Christmas decoration. It is believed that cranberries got their name due to cranes always eating them and the blossoms of the berries look like the head of cranes. It is considered a sacred fruit in some indigenous circles such as Algonquian and Iroquois.
How to Grow:
Easy to Plant: Relatively
Rating: Moderate
Seeds accessible: Sometimes seasonal

My Garden Flowers Part 7
All photos mine, unedited.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In order of appearance:
181. Early Goldenrod (Solidago juncea) She's named for flowering earlier than most goldenrods, which tend to flower in late summer to fall, but not all! I've seen others flower earlier.
182. Canadian Fly Honeysuckle (Lonicera canadensis) Wasn't expecting her to flower this year, but there she was in the spring! No berries, though, sadly. Maybe next year!
183. Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
184. Burning Bush (Euonymus atropurpureus) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
185. Mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
186. Veiny Meadow Rue (Thalictrum venulosom) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
187. Wild Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) Not blue like the ones that enchanted me the time I visited my aunt in England, but still very nice.
188. Beggar's Lice (Hackelia virginiana) I didn't plant her and don't keep many now that she's popped up. She's a handsome enough plant but her fruits stick to EVERYTHING and leaves can get sickly from time to time.
189. Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet and probably won't this year because my landlord cut that area. (:
190. Squashberry (Viburnum edule) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
191. Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
192. Virgin's Bower (Clematis ligusticifolia) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
193. Largeleaf Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum macrophyllum) In my opinion she should be named for her rhizome rather than her leaf. The leaves aren't that big but the rhizomes are huge.
194. Twinflower (Linnaea borealis) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet, but she is spreading in a nice little mat.
195. Alpine bistort (Bistorta vivipara) Not pictured as I haven't got pictures yet.
196. Rough Cinquefoil (Potentilla norvegica monspeliensis) I didn't plant this, but she is there regardless! Not pictured as I haven't got pictures yet.
197. Sweetfern (Comptonia peregrina) Not a fern. The leaves are just kind of fernlike.
198. Sundial Lupine (Lupinus perennis) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet. New area for her and we'll see if A) she survives and B) if she doesn't turn out to be bigleaf lupine again.
199. Gray Goldernrod (Solidago nemoralis) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
200. Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata) She gets fairly tall and the flowers come up at the top.
201. Scarlet Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus) Another one that's not native to the area and can't survive the winter, but has been grown here in the summers long before colonization.
202. Tall Cinquefoil (Drymocallis arguta) Very strawberry-like flowers that sit atop the plant.
203. Early Saxifrage (Micranthes virginiensis) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
204. American Sweetflag (Acorus americana) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
205. River Beauty (Chamaenerion latifolium) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
206. Large cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) Don't know if she'll flower again this year, but she did make a couple of berries last year!
207. Heart-Leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
208. Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum) Not pictured as she hasn't flowered yet.
209. Little Sweet Betsy (Trillium cuneatum) This was supposed to be a different species, but that's okay. She's still native to the range I accept. Her leaves have a lovely natural variegation to them.
210. Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata) Nice blue flowers that thrive in shady spots.

The small carnivorous plants bog is going really well! 🌿
It has changed a bit since I set it up. In the set-up video, I had put in Empetrum nigrum and Calluna vulgaris. Unfortunately, both plants died after a while and I can't say what caused this.
I then planted the bottom completely with moss and added Utricularia sandersonii and Utricularia livida.
But the Drosera capensis alba in particular, which can be seen at the front right, has grown really big. In the meantime, it has formed some offshoots and is even flowering! 🌼

Note
question! your clanmew fruit guide mentions cranberries, and it’s generally thought that cranberries help lower risk of UTIs and stuff like that in people dogs and cats. would the clans have any knowledge of this?
I have to look into it! I know the studies can be a bit mixed, some say they do lower risk of UTIs, others don't
But most of all I need to check if the compounds in that species of cranberry is the same as the species that Clan cats have access to. The American cranberry is the type that makes up the majority of these studies, but the Clans encounter BOG Cranberry!
American, also called "large cranberry" = Vaccinium macrocarpon
Bog = Vaccinium oxycoccos
I'll get to this research when I finally getting around to the urinary herb guides, which will probably be around the same time I get to the bowel movement guides

Review of ROVECTIN’s Aqua Soothing UV Protector SPF50+ PA++++
ROVECTIN is a Korean brand that offers a complete range of skincare to transform and restore skin. Many of which really is aimed toward sensitive skin. Their Aqua Soothing UV Protector is designed to provide highly effective protection against UVA and UVB rays which can cause premature aging. Key ingredients include coconut oil (hydrating, protects skin, smoothing, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, calms redness, absorbs easily, has some UV ray blocking ability), titanium dioxide (physical sunscreen; protects the skin from UVA/UVB radiation, gentle, good for sensitive and acne-prone skin), zinc oxide (gives skin a protective coating from irritation, promotes healing, astringent, antiseptic), sunflower seed oil unsaponifiables (high in vitamin E, emollient, prevents damage to the skin from UV light, anti-aging, hydrating) and cranberry seed oil (softening, soothing, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, protects against environmental factors, nourishing, has natural sun blocking properties). This product retails for between $23-29 USD, you can get it here for $29 + shipping. You can use code DANNIEL15 to save some money. :)
Ingredients
Water, Zinc Oxide, Cyclohexasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Methicone, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Adenosine, Hedera Helix (Ivy) Leaf/Stem Extract, Malus Domestica (Apple) Fruit Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Vanilla Planifolia (Flat-leaved Vanilla) Fruit Extract, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower Water, Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract, Sodium Chloride, Aluminum Hydroxide, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Dimethicone/Phenyl Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Prunus Amygdalus Amara (Bitter Almond) Kernel Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Saccharide Isomerate, Trehalose, Glycerin, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil Unsaponifiables, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Disodium EDTA, Stearic Acid, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Polyglyceryl-6 Polyricinoleate
To quickly note, I received this for free from Wishtrend for my honest review.
Tumblr media
The UV protector comes in a plastic squeeze bottle like normal and contains 50 ml (1.69 oz) and is fragrance-free.
Tumblr media
The product is very easy to dispense and it's very convenient.
Tumblr media
The sunblock is not watery or anything, but it's pretty lightweight.
Tumblr media
The sunblock does blend out a fair amount but is still fairly streaky. This, while somewhat frustrating, is a sign of an effective sunblock as it does leave somewhat of a layer and doesn't just absorb in like a moisturizer.
Tumblr media
It's not the most moisturizing, but it does have some chalkiness to it.
Tumblr media
The layer is a little bit visible and so I do think this will flash back if you're using flash photography.
Recommended use is to dispense an adequate amount of the SPF on areas such as the face, neck, arms, and hand during your last step of skincare. Apply as often as necessary in order to maintain sun protection. Suitable for daily use and meant for dry to normal skin. This sunblock is cruelty-free, pH balanced, and free of artificial coloring, fragrances, and ethanol. It’s also vegan-friendly. While designed for dry to normal skin, this one may be ideal for oily to combination skin. This is a physical sunscreen that's hypoallergenic and is a non-chemical filter. After using, while I don't typically notice physical sunscreens very often if they are pretty moisturizing, this formula is a little drier and does take some time to absorb into the skin and look less dry. After it does absorb, my skin looked very radiant and bright, but it's very apparent I'm wearing sunblock after application. It has a typical sunscreen scent and a chalkiness to it. So it does have some streaking that does take some time to blend in. The ingredients are quite nice with the exception of one irritant. I didn't notice any irritation on my skin as a result of using this, however, it does ball up on the skin, so in my opinion, this may not be the best to wear under makeup as it may cause makeup to ball up. I do think this would be best for lighter skin as it's less obvious and has less of a cast on it. I do find it long-wearing and very effective but I'd recommend this to people with oily and combination skin as I really don't think it's the best fit for dry skin.
What I like: once it really melts into the skin, it really does leave the skin looking hydrated and it really lasts a long time and is easy to reapply. What I don't like: it's harder to blend in and is kind of chalky and streaky. It really isn't the best for my skin type personally but I can see this working on oily skin. It has a pretty obvious cast on it and I think this would be hard to hide if you have darker skin. It also balls up and so it may not be the best base for makeup.
Pros:
Hydrating
Adds radiance
After melting in, the complexion looks great
Lovely ingredients
Long-wearing
Fragrance-free
Sensitive skin friendly
Vegan
Cons:
Leaves a cast
Balls up on the skin
Isn't really ideal for dry skin
Would I buy this?
Probably not
Rating: 7/10

Exploring the Nutritional Power of Cranberries: Nature’s Superfood
Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are a remarkable fruit known for their vibrant color and powerful health benefits. This evergreen shrub produces dark red berries that are small, hard, and round, with a distinctive bitter and sour flavor. Despite their intense taste, cranberries are celebrated as a "superfood" due to their rich nutrient profile and impressive antioxidant content.
Nutrient-Rich Profile
Cranberries are packed with essential vitamins and minerals. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is crucial for immune function, skin health, and collagen production. Additionally, cranberries provide a good amount of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and promotes a healthy gut. The presence of vitamin E, vitamin K, and various B vitamins further enhances their nutritional value.
Antioxidant Powerhouse
One of the most notable attributes of cranberries is their high antioxidant content. Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the body from oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. Cranberries are rich in proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, and polyphenols, all of which contribute to their powerful antioxidant properties. These compounds play a vital role in preventing chronic diseases and promoting overall health.
Health Benefits
Regular consumption of cranberries can offer numerous health benefits:
Urinary Tract Health: Cranberries are well-known for their ability to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). The proanthocyanidins in cranberries prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract, reducing the risk of infection.

Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart’s tongue)
Calycanthus floridus (Sweetshrub)
Carex aurea (Golden sedge)
Claytonia virginica (Fairy spuds)
Echinacea pallida (Pale purple coneflower)
Equisetum hyemale (Scouring rush)

Osmunda claytoniana (Interrupted fern)
Passiflora incarnata (Maypop)
Pediomeleum esculentum/Psoralea esculenta (Breadroot)
Polystichum munitum (Western sword fern)
Triglochin maritma (Seaside arrowgrass)
Vaccinium macrocarpon (Large cranberry)
Viburnum acerifolium (Maple-leaved viburnum)
Viola pedata var. bicolor (Crowfoot violet)
Species I’m trying again this year after failed past attempt(s)!
Antennaria neglecta (Field pussytoes) Was planted in late summer and I was kept from watering it adequately.
Argentina anserina (Silverweed) No idea why they didn’t survive where I put them, but try, try again, elsewhere this time.
Artemisia frigida (Fringed sagebrush) First time ended up being white sage brush instead; second time plug was on its last legs on arrival, died soon after.
Chamaenerion angustifolium (Fireweed) Going to try this in yet another spot.
Dennstaedtia punctiloba (Hay-scented fern) Supposed to be aggressive! Mine was not. Maybe the one I get this year.
Dioscorea villosa (Wild yam) Planted the tuber but it never came up.
Glycyrrhiza lepidota (Wild licorice) Squirrels...Dug it up and broke the stem.
Lupinus polyphyllus (Big-leaf lupine) Leafed out nicely for its first and second year and then just didn’t come up again after its second winter.
Maianthemum racemosum (False Solomon’s seal) Squirrels! Dug it up and broke the stem.
Pteridium aquilinum latiusculum (Western bracken fern) I put it in a dry shady spot, as recommended, and it died.
Rudbeckia hirta (Black-eyed Susan) SQUIRRELS!!! Dug it up and while I was visiting home and it dried out. Couldn’t revive it.
Silene acaulis (Moss campion) Sunny, wet, amongst rocks. Check, check, check, but they keep dying on me.
Sisyrinchium montanum (Blue-eyed grass) Two places tried, two place died. I shall try a third place this year.
Viola pubescens (Downy yellow violet) FUCKING. SQUIRRELS. Dug it up while I was at work and left it to scorch and dry out in the sun. Couldn’t revive it.
Species I’m getting again because I’m fairly sure mine didn’t make it
Apocynum cannabinum (Hemp dogbane) It might not have gotten enough sunlight thanks to the white mulberry that grew over. I’ll try it in a different area.
Sagittaria latifolia (Duck potato) It may come up after all but I don’t want to take the chance of planting too late if it doesn’t.
Sparganium americanum (American bur-reed) Not sure why, but we’ll try again this year. And I may yet be surprised.
Symplocarpus foetidus (Skunk cabbage) It’s possible it’s just young and takes longer to come up than it would if it were more mature, but I don’t want to take chances since there’s only one place I can get them at.
