Sometimes if Leon is quiet, he can almost hear his beloved's voice. Leon's settled in Wallachia at this point, his friend Trefor and the people surrounding them had helped him build the base for the hold and then the beginnings of the soon to be Belmont manor. The money the church pays him, that surrounding nobles pay him for killing monsters, is enough to keep the labor going, though he had long since been okay just knowing Trefor would be there. Ronaldo of course had become a regular visitor, someone he looked forward to seeing every so often.

Today found Leon, like all other quiet evenings, in the church, in a pew, praying. To who or what, at this point he wasn't sure. He'd long since hoped that perhaps if he prayed enough, repented enough, that it would erase how guilty he felt when he didn’t stop him the first time. Had he gone with him, had he been there more, but Leon was young, a knighted captain at 22. He was so young, still learning how to navigate being a captain, to understand the weight of having lives in his hands. He also felt guilty at times for being part of the templars, part of the crusades, because in the back of his mind he always felt it was wrong, but he was also so sure he was doing what God wanted.

Leon’s faith saw him through, Sarah’s guidance held him fast in a storm of unease. Sarah’s sacrifice now motivated him. He’d strike down all manners of monsters and vampires and demons, whatever it took to protect people, but he would never outright slaughter them for being…not human. No, the ones he killed were those who actively killed. Leon was adamant about that because he had learned not everything is at it seems. So, he prays and he hopes that what he is doing, what he has done and will do, is the right thing. Would he go to heaven, when he dies? Would he go to hell? Did they exist? His faith in the Church waned, of course, but yet his faith in God, that did not. His faith was all he had at times to comfort him. He’s found love in his companion, his darling Trefor, but it still felt like not enough. He still felt lost.

Yet he was a Belmont, his family before him were blessed with a holiness that also ran through his veins. His family before they disappeared, his parents before they died. They instilled in him to never give up. So, he won’t. He doesn’t leave the church though, instead he stays. Stays as late as he could, with the night now fallen and the moon in its rightful place, until the sun comes and the moon rests once more.

It’s peaceful.

Leon loves that about this church. Unlike other houses of worship that felt empty and hollow, this one felt full of God’s love, of light. Perhaps that was because the father here, like Leon, truly was faithful. His love and kindness were unlike any other. He loved deeply, fiercely, never turned anyone away. He loved his neighbors, his enemies, he helped, he taught. Leon admired him, this man who became his second father. So Leon does not mind when the kindly man sits next to him, saying nothing. He, too, joins in a silent prayer.

The night passes peacefully and by dawn’s light he leaves. The Father, with a soft, gentle smile on his lips wishes him well, that he walk in the light of God, and Leon, feeling less heavy returns to his home, to his beloved Trefor. Leon would be able to see this through. He had too.

At age 25, Leon had already made a name for himself, made the Belmonts loved again. How long, however, would remain a mystery.
