their heads touching, she takes a shaky breath to try to stabilize herself. if anything, his words help alleviate some of the devastation that seems to consume her like a tidal wave. a weepy chuckle escapes upon his questioning, sansa pushes her head back to look up at him, hands wiping at her eyes (margaery better be right about the waterproof mascara being a miracle on earth). ❝ no, no boy. ❞ there was no time for boys. her world was falling apart, sansa wasn't a naive and stupid girl who thought relationships and sex could patch a bandage on a ship wreck.

she walks past theon, allowing herself into his dorm. perhaps this is the sort of comfort of knowing it's also her brother's room, or maybe it's chalked up to years of growing up together - despite the tension and bitterness at times, sansa still (admittedly) trusted theon, and felt comfortable in his presence. ❝ i don't get it, ❞ she begins, voice still shaky. it's taking an active effort on her part to suppress the sobs, but she's doing it. ❝ one minute it's all beer pong and keg stands, next minute i'm back home when they came to tell us the news about dad... ❞ the juxtaposition of these two events happening simultaneously sounds just as bizarre out loud as in her head.

the pacing she does while talking stops, sansa suddenly sobering up both physically and emotionally. turning to face theon, she tries to play it off with a shrug. ❝ it's ... whatever. ❞ walking over to robb's side of the room, she plops onto his bed. ❝ sorry, i'll - i'll just wait for robb to get home. ❞ she is uncomfortably aware that on a saturday night, there is a rather large chance he is NOT coming home tonight. teeth worry on her bottom lip, now realizing the awkward situation she has created. she remains criss cross on her brother's bed, deflecting now. ❝ do you- do you have something to drink? ❞

𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐁𝐒 and a hundred [ and some odd ] miles away from the root of his exasperation : theon finds himself alone, again. and lying on his twin long mattress in the dorm he shares with his best friend. and even on a night like this, his best friend has somewhere to be. something to do. something to wash down the bitterness of his day with. not theon. alone again, the theme always comes back to him.

he digs around in his nightstand until he finds a red box — the kind he held his pencils and erasers in back in elementary school. only now, it is filled with weed, rolling papers, and a gently used lighter. he takes this hauls this box, as though it is heavier than it is, to the bathroom. heaves himself up on the counter and turns on the switch to the fan. spends a delicate moment rolling up his evening in a tight, cylindrical form. a good bit of precision to it, for all the good that does him. brings the lighter to his lips and inhales. takes about three deep inhales for a change, but as his lungs fill, he finds his mind clearing. his body feels lighter. he coughs a bit. he has outran his worries for now.

nearly done with his joint, he hears a knock at the door. too unbothered to be angry, he makes his way, in no manner of rush, to the door. opens it to find his best friend's sister. he doesn't have time to even tell her that her brother is gone, her head is in his chest and she's embracing him faster than words can leave his lips. he manages to get a look at her. composure broken — so unlike the girl he knows. and has grown to know.

and maybe years of bickering at each other in their youth was only a right of passage. maybe it was something fated. theon doesn't find it in himself to spare more than a comment or two as of late. some sort of surreal realization that she is a person, and so is he. and that they exist in the same timeline and in the same rugged fate and strung together and there is some sort of reverence about the thought. maybe it's the weed talking, but he finds his eyes open and accepting, in some few ways.

his arms raise slowly to her back and pull her in. right hand rubs her back in a slow, idle movement. she is before him, vulnerable. alone. and he doesn't find it in himself to be an ass. doesn't find it in himself to be anything but sorry and sort of vengeful. " alright, " theon begins, head resting against sansa's. " what sorry frat boy's getting his ass kicked tonight? "

罠英語・Trap Words pt 5

ソース → ❌ Sauce → ✅ Japanese style worchestershire sauce

In Japanese common usage, the word 「ソース」 only refers to a specific subcategory of sauce - japanese style worchestershire sauces. Although in certain technical circumstances, 「ソース」 may also carry the broader meaning that the english equivalent does, calling something like soy sauce 「ソース」 in a regular conversation won’t get your meaning across.¹

We can see this in the Japanese Wikipedia article for ソース. Though the article is about the broader definition of sauce, there is a notice at the top of the page:

“This article is about the general name for a liquid or paste used to season food (the broad definition of 「ソース」). For Worchestershire Sauce (the narrow definition of 「ソース」), see Worchestershire Sauce.”² (my translation)

Side note: I know it's a meme but "Worchestershire" isn't hard to say. It's just "wooster-sheer".

Though ソース can be found as a part of various other words ( ミートソース/meat sauce; ホワイトソース/white sauce; トマトソース/tomato (pasta) sauce), when it is used just by itself, it almost exclusively refers to worchestershire sauce varieties. For example, you can’t abbreviate ミートソース to ソース, even when the context is clear.

Within the category of what Japanese speakers mean when they say ソース, we have ウスターソース, which is similar to the thin English Worchestershire sauce; 濃厚ソース, which is sometimes marketed as tonkatsu sauce and is very thick and viscous; and 中濃ソース which is somewhere in　between. お好み焼きソース is also a type of ソース, similar to 濃厚ソース.³

グリーンピース → ❌ Greenpeace → ✅ peas

Yep… the word グリーンピース doesn’t refer to the environmental activism organisation Greenpeace, which I discovered to some surprise during an actual conversation with my Japanese partner. Since Greenpeace is famous for its anti-whaling stance, and Japan is the country with the highest levels of whaling in the world,⁴ it was only natural to assume that it was a direct transliteration of the organisation’s name. Maybe it’s a common point of discussion in Japan, I thought.

In reality, it literally just means peas. Green peas. An instance of the plural being built into the transliteration (like バケツ), since Japan has no plurals. It’s weird that it’s not グリーンピーズ though, don’t you think? I guess we can just chalk that up to an initial pronunciation error that carried though to the modern day.⁵

Why hasn’t it been shortened to ピース? Well:

Because ピース means “the peace sign”. This word/pose is so common in Japanese culture that shortening グリーンピース to ピース would likely be confusing.

To be clear, the organisation’s name is also transliterated as グリーンピース, but overwhelmingly in regular conversation, グリーンピース will mean “peas”.

トレーナー → ❌ trainers (sneakers) → ✅ sweatshirt

This might not necessarily be a trap word for people from the US, but it is at least a funny place for 和製英語 to show up. According to this source, this word was invented by a fashion designer named Kensuke Ijizu, who was apparently a big boxing fan, and noticed that the trainers always wore sweatshirts, and so decided to name the clothing 「トレーナー」 when he released his designs in Japan⁶. It’s rare that a trap word has such a clear explanation for how it came about! めっちゃスッキリした！

However, スウェット and スウェットシャツ are also both commonly used in Japanese, meaning the same as トレーナー, so this is really only a problem while listening, not while speaking.⁷ It’s also worth noting that トレーナー does mean “trainer” as in like, a personal trainer. That’s where the weird word for sweatshirt comes from, after all.

The bezzle is contained by two forces.

First, Stein's Law: "Anything that can't go on forever will eventually stop."

Second, Keynes's: "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent."

On the one hand, extremely badly run businesses that strip all the value out of the firm, making things progressively worse for its suppliers, workers and customers will eventually fail (Stein's Law).

On the other hand, as the private equity sector has repeatedly demonstrated, there are all kinds of accounting tricks, subsidies and frauds that can animate a decaying, zombie firm long after its best-before date (Keynes's irrational markets):

One company that has done an admirable job of balancing on a knife edge between Stein and Keynes is Verizon, a monopoly telecoms firm that has proven that a business can remain large, its products relied upon by millions, its stock actively traded and its market cap buoyant, despite manifest, repeated incompetence and waste on an unimaginable scale.

This week, Verizon shut down Bluejeans, an also-ran videoconferencing service the company bought for $400 million in 2020 as a panic-buy to keep up with Zoom. As they lit that $400 mil on fire, Verizon praised its own vision, calling Bluejeans "an award-winning product that connects our customers around the world, but we have made this decision due to the changing market landscape":

Verizon isn't just bad at being a phone company that does non-phone-company things – it's incredibly bad at being a phone company, too. As Bode points out, Verizon's only real competency is in capturing its regulators at the FCC:

Short-sellers – who bet against companies and get paid when their stock prices go down – get a bad rap: billionaire shorts were the villains of the Gamestop squeeze, accused of running negative PR campaigns against beloved businesses to drive them under and pay their bets off:

But shorts can do the lord's work. Writing for Bloomberg, Kathy Burton tells the story of Nate Anderson, whose Hindenburg Research has cost some of the world's wealthiest people over $99 billion by publishing investigative reports on their balance-sheet shell-games just this year:

Anderson started off trying to earn a living as a SEC whistleblower, identifying financial shenanigans and collecting the bounties on offer, but that didn't pan out. So he turned his forensic research skills to preparing mediagenic, viral reports on the scams underpinning the financial boasts of giant companies…after taking a short position in them.

This year, Anderson's targets have included Carl Icahn, whose company lost $17b in market cap after Anderson accused it of overvaluing its assets. He went after the world's fourth-richest man, Gautam Adani, accusing him of "accounting fraud and stock manipulation," wiping out 34% of his net worth. He took on Jack Dorsey, whose payment processor Square renamed itself Block and went all in on the cryptocurrency bezzle, lopping 16% off its share price.

Burton points out that Anderson's upside for these massive bloodletting was comparatively modest. A perfectly timed exit from the $17b Icahn report would have netted $56m. What's more, Anderson faces legal threats and worse – one short seller was attacked by a man wearing brass-knuckles, an attack attributed to her short activism.

Shorts are lauded as one of capitalism's self-correcting mechanisms, and Hindenberg certainly has taken some big, successful swings at some of the great bezzles of our time. But as Verizon shows, shorts alone can't discipline a market where profits and investor confidence are totally decoupled from competence or providing a decent product or service.

My interview with the Lead Programmer of TRON 2.0 and Designer of the Light Cycles experience, Kevin Lambert, for the 20th Anniversary of TRON 2.0.

You'll have to pardon me for constantly stumbling over my words, I was nervous during the entire interview.

Also did my best to clean up the audio. I don't have professional recording equipment, just a cheap headset with a microphone. Removed as much as I could of clicks, pops, hiss, breathing, clipping, and so on. But there was only so much I could do, and the final result definitely isn't perfect. You can still expect some distracting noise.

I can't thank Kevin enough for agreeing to do this. I'd like to try interviewing other Monolith Productions staff – who worked on TRON 2.0 – in the future, too.

More Super Hornets Block III fighters for the U.S. Navy

Boeing received a contract to manufacture 17 more F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Block III fighters.

Although Boeing's civilian division is currently under strong production scrutiny, the military branch has little reason to worry, as evidenced by an additional U.S. Navy request of $1.14 billion for 17 new F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Block III fighters.

Through the new contract, Boeing can build in St. Louis ten new two-seater F/A-18F Super Hornets Block III, under an amended contract under the so-called production request of Lot 46, as well as two F/A-18F and five F/A-18Es in Lot 47.

The amended contract also provides for the first phase of a technical data package for the F/A-18E/F and EA-18G Growler, including the operation, maintenance, installation and training data to support the support efforts of the F/A-18 and EA-18G for the Navy.

Boeing received a U.S. Navy contract in March 2019 to build 61 single-seat F/A-18E Super Hornet Block III jets and seventeen double-seat F variants to be delivered between 2021 and 2024. The contract was awarded as part of the U.S. Navy fleet modernization plans and is scheduled to be completed in the mid-2030s.
