I’m so fortunate to reside in the historic Black neighborhood in Brooklyn known as Weeksville where I am reminded about what vibrant Black communities can look like even in the face of gentrification. After hearing about the recent passing of Linda Brown (the named plaintiff in the seminal case of Brown v. Board of Education that rendered segregation in public schools unconstitutional), I started thinking about the impact Weeksville—a neighborhood founded in 1827—had on the education and upliftment of its people. With its own churches, businesses and, most importantly, schools, the community was responsible for producing New York’s first Black female physician (Susan Smith McKinney-Steward) and New York City’s first Black police officer. Weeksville was a Black separatist community that championed independence over integration, and served as a safe haven for Black people away from the racism of Manhattan. Ironically, schools and neighborhoods are more segregated today than they were after the Brown ruling was implemented because of the socioeconomic policies put in place to maintain the myth of Black inferiority. The King's gaze follows their gesture, settling on his niece, the giantess beside her, and the child clutching at both of their hands. It's an idyllic moment - one which entirely belies the nature of the events which brought them here. It's a reminder (as if one were needed) of why he invited them to Ljósálfheim in the first place.

"And yet, I've never known you to shy away from speaking your mind regardless." Freyr chuckles, glancing back towards Loki.

It is a rare moment of tranquillity, when Freyr finds Loki. The god is by nature chaotic, unsettled – i.e. the complete opposite of tranquil – but something about watching their family play by the nearby stream, barefoot in the grass as they lean forward to dip a toe in the freezing water, makes them still. They are safe. They are happy.

A glance towards their wife’s uncle as he drops onto the blanket beside them. The trickster gestures towards Sigyn, Angrboða, and young Fenrir - towards the gentle smiles on their faces. “I think that answers your question better than I could.”

Such an admission from Loki is uncharacteristic in its vulnerability, and the Giantess' gaze is uncommonly gentle when she hears it. She kisses their jaw, marking a trail across their skin until she can whisper in their ear.

"And you think that I am?" The words are half-teasing, partly in an attempt to make sure they don't close themselves off from her. "Kultaseni... We do this how we want to. That is how we will always do this."
