Irulan wasn’t sure why Gerri had invited her to this particular party. She had come to this apartment on the West Side and had shaken hands with the principals before. There were some investors, of course, and some lawyers whose names she had heard Gerri mention from time to time, but the atmosphere was cold. Frigid, perhaps, the way everyone seemed to look at each other and seize each other up.

Irulan was tempted to take out her phone and read the biography of Stalin that she had started a few days ago, but she found herself walking  to a corner of the apartment where the only other person was a woman that she had never met before. “Enjoying the party?” Irulan asked trying to make conversation.

This is the little Ekko/Jinx moment that's been sticking with me:

Because on first watch, I expected this was going to be something negative. Ekko trying to defend why he'd been so hostile to Powder. 'You're not the kind of person who helps... because you destroy things,' or something to that effect.

But no.

What a way to look at Jinx?? Even with everything she's done... He looks at this well-adjusted, 'ideal' Powder, and still thinks she's missing something that his Jinx has. The Powder that he knew was so determined to make something that mattered... it's a Powder who's content to play second-fiddle to the people around her, a Powder that settles that feels off to him.

And that ties into why he can't stay here. Our Ekko isn't the kind of person who settles either.

Whenever she walked into a room, Irulan could immediately feel eyes resting on her. She could have worn jeans and a T-shirt and they would stare at her. Sometimes, she heard compliments as well as catcalls or whistles, but she pushed them all away. She couldn’t control other people’s reactions, but she could control her own, so she just smiled, nodded, and acted as if none of it really bothered her.

This black tie event tonight at a nice address in New York was no different than any other. She had been invited because her father’s jewelry was gracing numerous necks and ears tonight including the emerald necklace she wore. It was cold, formal, and stiff. Everyone was sitting at tables and talking about nothing in particular.

So, Irulan went to the bar and walked up to @abusedog. “What are you having?” she asked.
