His large hands moved to daintily unhook the necklace and hang it around her neck. He set it carefully on her collarbone and pressed it into place with a kiss. Perfect. Blue eyes flicked up to observe her expression, his own silly and adoring. "Please, i insist." He cooed, pulling back to offer his hearteyes directly.
His hands returned to Elizabeth's hips, gripping lightly. "Should sit here more often." He remarked with a grin.
Tumblr media
"Of course, I did," she said giggle in her tone as she settled on his lap. It seemed absurd to her that she wouldn't get him a present. The warmth of his body, her gentle giant, made her so unbelievably happy. It was something she made herself promise to herself she would enjoy while she could, before they had to go their separate ways again. "Hmm," she hummed, pressing her body against his some more as he kissed her neck. Leaning back slightly only so he could look at the pendants she got them.
Tumblr media
At his question she couldn't help the small chuckle that rose from her. "Yes, love. I wear yours, you wear mine. As close as you can be without physically next to me."
She froze for a moment, the word forever piercing her heart. While they hadn't discussed everything yet, that made her hopeful. She nodded a small yes as she pulled her hair off to the side. Something about this moment seemed more intimate than all the physical acts they had ever done, more than all the stolen glances and lingering touches. He was the romantic out of the two of them but in this moment, she felt it, she just knew. Forever didn't seem long enough for how long she wanted to be with him. "Can I put yours on?" She asked softly, unsure why she felt so shy suddenly.

After several years of Charles warning me that Galactica 1980 is borderline unwatchable, which naturally only inflamed my curiosity, he finally gave in and agreed to watch it with me. Which means I have to watch it, and holy shit, it is that bad. But that's not what I'm posting about.
The main antagonist of the series is a rogue Galactic Councillor who wants to do time travel to take over Past Earth and something something something, they kind of lose track of specifics after he fails to help the Nazis hit London with V-2s. Up until now, he's been played by 80s genre darling and household favorite Richard Lynch, but for reasons I've yet to figure out they decided to do a "character appears to die and then comes back in a different body" plot and replace him.
With Jeremy Brett.
Who is giving one of the campiest villain performances I have ever seen, and I'm counting Max von Sydow in Flash Gordon. Fluttering his eyelashes, purring, growling, jumping over shit for no reason... it's everything we all love so dearly about his Holmes, but eeeeeeviiiilllll.
This episode isn't actually good, but Brett has elevated the material beyond my wildest expectations. Alas, he has departed the show, never to return. But we cherished him while he was here.

core of andre and rovers relationship........... v important to me (LONG rambling under cut! ig sorta explanation of their initial beginning relationship)
hi. whats the core of them. what actually brings them together.. take a while guess from my millions of post abt it
asian-american immigrant* trauma 😁 its not ever so defining for them as a couple, esp andre (i think hes generally moved** past it, as much as you can when youre main coping mechanism is That). Anyway, i think its what originally brings them together
*quick note. sterotypical asian-american immigrant life. you probably know. the whole: parents moved here for a better life for You, high expectations and wants for you to grow up and be successful. if you dont its like youre personally failing them for all theve done. youve seen jokes abt it all, yada yada. its not how everyone whos an asian immigrant is, its a sterotype after all. but its still how a lot of them do...... me included, i hc andre to aswell based on the info from the show. its canon in my heart. religion also plays a part but we'll get to that maybe ("i was raised by hardcore christians", kinda wanting to be a screenwriter- moreso that whole scene and him panicking abt what hes become. failing out of med school, you get the idea. ive talked abt that sooooooooooo much...)
Rover is a clone in canon.. i did this for a multitude of reasons but rlly quickly you can kinda imagine its for that whole- feeling like a diff person bc of the highhhh specific expectation life that is forced upon you. its a biggg part of his character. he still struggles with the whole "living your life for other people" bit
true androver fans know abt their initial reactions towards eachother. Rovers kinda uptight mean manager when he meets everyone (reagan 2.0 ig?), andre dislikes him for this. Andre is. Andre. rover at first is always work-oriented so hes kinda pissy that andre feels like some slacker who doesnt deserve his job. > just realized this is kinda a timeline of their relationship too..... at least the start, not everything is set in stone tho but this is what i generally think of for this era.
eventually... idk.. at some cognito (chirstmas?) party... atp brett is still trying to get rover to open up to everyone (theyre buds* already). he eventually convinces him to come under the guise that Rand is gonna be there, since Rover is wanted to drop of transfer papers to a new management job (hes Done!!! with the gangs messiness). Brett. Didnt Not lie, he could never do that butttt welllll rands not there, omission of the fact. rovers kinda Wth, but its all part of bretts master friendship plan. cause now Rovers here, its a party, why not get a drink n all? he gets too many drinks. kinda just sits down at a wall in some darkish not populated area to chill out. Andre, well doesnt care much abt what everyones doing buttt hes a party-er n all, he practices normal morals lmao so sees rover kinda fucked up and goes to check up on him. WAIT pull out the fake wiki didnt i write this there
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok sure. less info but quick summary! idk if im keeping the whole friends with benefits thing but it can paint a better picture of their dynamic. full wiki if youre curious, not fully up to date and weird writing but hurray rover character! anyway. andre goes up to check on him. theyre kinda annoyed at seeing andre but whatever theyre too idc. in fact rovers a very curious "needs to know everything" person, so in his drunk mind goes and asks andre a bunch of personal stupid question "how do you do it? be so stupidkly carefree and idiotic" ok. chill. yada yada they actually have a heart to heart..... i mean andres kinda high or whatever too but its a weird pivot for them. andres not totalllyy asnwering his questions, still enough to have a connection, but hes more concenvered abt rovers current physical being so just makes sure hes ok first. Maybe brings him somewhere else like to his lab n whatnot, not 100% sure
Those first impressions? Andre realizes well first- he's right, rover is stuck up; but he's also wrong and understands more so Why hes like that... it intrigues him. (like how he tried to get glenn to do mushrooms LOL, its a similar vain of hmmmm you were like me. let me try something for that) Rover also realizes (a little before cognito christmas too) that andre Isnt dumb.. or some full slacker.. he respects that he actually knows his job, and gets Rlly Rlly interested in him in general. esp after learning he had a similar childhood- that first question he asked was genuine. "how do you do it....?"
Tumblr media
ok. idk where im goign with this LMAO IM SORRY core of how they got more interested in eachother..... its a whole thing. the biggest effect is that Understanding tho... that yea. i lived that life... no one else takes it rlly srsly- or no one else cares- or no one else WHATEVER. but they do with eachother yk.. Andre kinda helps rover deal with his whole . thing. Rover hates it all, he still struggles with it so internally but through andre and kinda everyone else he learns to eventually get past it. Rover helps Andre deal lesser so with this all, like i said hes Kinda over it; but he offers to andre to be that person to actually take him seriously.. to actually listen to whatever the fuck he has to say and see him past as jsut some druggie.... someone who sticks by him no matter what (hes loyal to a fault lol)
anyway. whatever. theyre not even perfect bc after party b4 theyre srs they have this whole attachment problem arc LMAO rover helps him out with all that too... hashtag uhhh mutual helpings. that transfer form to move departments n whatnot does come back btw.... he files it after their fucked up talk
ok. sorry i wrote that all so bad but i hope you got the idea. important context of their whole dynamic and relationship? now you get pieces like this lol I HATE ANDROVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Yes, the All Blacks is the New Zealand national team for Rugby Union. The big one that does the hakas, you've probably seen them do that rather than play a match." It certainly made things easier to describe.
Brett listened carefully at Elizabeth's explanation, smiling softly. He was glad she got to have those memories; they sounded like fun. He wished he had such experiences with his step dad. But alas, the time for that had long passed.
"I believe baseball is one of the sports that I've not been to yet. But it sounds like an atmosphere I'm depriving myself of. Perhaps I could catch a game with you sometime? You can show me what I'm missing."
Tumblr media
Elizabeth beamed as he complimented her father. She loved him beyond anything and it wasn't just because he was her only family, he was at times her best friend too. There was nothing, well almost nothing, that they kept from each other. "Exactly!"
Pen in hand, she was ready to write things but there was something there underneath it all. As someone who sought stories everywhere to write them, she could tell that there was one there. This was their first meeting though so she wouldn't push. "That sounds nice, can I ask, all blacks? Is that the name of a team?"
The mention of baseball had her light up like the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree at Christmas. "My dad actually. We moved around a lot when I was little and baseball was something he really loved. Made it a point to watch a game whenever and wherever we could before he settled us in California and we got season passes. There's just something about a crowd, some hot dogs and cheering with strangers that really just makes me happy. Have you ever been to a game? Like baseball? "

Washington CNN  — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu grabbed Brett McGurk’s arm as he walked out of a tense meeting of the Israeli Cabinet over securing the release of hostages Hamas was holding in Gaza.
“We need this deal,” Netanyahu told the White House Middle East coordinator a week ago in Tel Aviv, according to sources familiar with the exchange.
Earlier that day, Netanyahu and President Joe Biden had agreed over the phone that they were ready to accept the broad contours of a deal for Hamas to release 50 women and children who were being held hostage.
A major breakthrough had come two days earlier on November 12. Hamas – after refusing for days – had relented in offering identifying information about several dozen hostages, such as their age, gender and nationalities. The information confirmed that numerous children and toddlers had been taken captive on October 7.
Even though Israel and the US believed there were more than 50 women and children hostages, both sides agreed that they needed to move ahead with securing the release of those 50 – and hope that the deal might incentivize Hamas to release more after the initial group.
Hamas goes dark
But hours after McGurk’s meeting with Netanyahu, everything went dark.
The Qataris – who had been playing the main mediating role – couldn’t get a hold of Hamas. When the group finally resurfaced, Hamas threatened to derail the talks: It demanded that the Israel Defense Forces, which had gone in to raid Al-Shifa hospital, leave the hospital grounds. IDF declined but indicated that it would keep the hospital running.
Once the talks resumed, Biden – who was in San Francisco having just finished a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping – placed one more call to the emir of Qatar. His message: Time was up. The emir gave Biden his assurances that he would do everything possible to close the deal.
The next day, McGurk met in person with the emir in Doha to examine the text of the final deal that by this point was around half a dozen pages long. It laid out how women and children would leave in the first phase, as well as incentives for Hamas to release more hostages beyond that. CIA Director Bill Burns was dialed in to the meeting by phone.
Israel’s war cabinet approved the deal after making minor changes on Sunday, and the text of the agreement was passed on to Hamas for the last time by the emir of Qatar.
The emir made clear: This is the final offer.
On Tuesday morning, Hamas responded to their Qatari interlocutors: They approved the deal.
A ‘pilot’ negotiation
While efforts to negotiate a deal began in the immediate days after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, the groundwork for the deal started coming together weeks later, after the Biden administration had confidence that communication with Hamas via the Qataris was effective. Officials would later describe this as their “pilot” negotiation.
On October 23, the White House had successfully secured the release of two American citizens from Gaza – Natalie and Judith Raanan. As the mother and daughter made their way across Gaza, national security adviser Jake Sullivan, principal deputy national security adviser Jon Finer and McGurk were huddled in Sullivan’s office, tracking the Raanans’ movements in real time. Sources described their multi-hour journey as “excruciating.”
When the women arrived at the border, Charge d’Affaires Stephanie Hallett was waiting for them. At this point, Biden placed a call to Natalie Raanan’s father to share the joyful news, and later in the day, he would speak with both women.
That day would serve as proof to Biden’s top national security officials that the White House had successfully established a means of communicating and negotiating with Hamas via Qatar. And it triggered what would ultimately become the weeks-long effort to secure the release of a larger group of hostages.
Foundations of a deal
After the Israelis delegated the director of Mossad to negotiate on the hostages, back in the US, Burns, too, became intimately involved.
In Doha, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani engaged directly with senior Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, a person familiar with the discussions said.
In multiple phone calls in October, Biden impressed upon Netanyahu that there was a path for a large group of hostages to be released. On October 24, Hamas appeared to agree to the parameters of a deal to release women and children hostages. American and Israeli officials furiously deliberated whether Israel should delay its ground invasion.
Ultimately, Israel wasn’t convinced. At this point, they still had no proof of life of any of the hostages that Hamas claimed to have, and they also didn’t buy Hamas’ claim that they couldn’t determine the identities of the hostages until there was a pause in fighting.
Israel began its ground invasion on October 27.
In the weeks that followed, the US, Israel and Qatar went back and forth with Hamas, negotiating with the group about every detail of a possible deal: the timeframe, number of hostages, safe passage corridors and surveillance.
Blinken returned to Israel in early November to press the Israeli government to accept “humanitarian pauses,” something that the US argued would advance progress on the hostages. Although there was an agreement in principle after Blinken met with Netanyahu and the war cabinet, the Israeli prime minister publicly rejected the idea just hours after that meeting. It took days of pressure from the US for the Israeli government to institute and acknowledge “tactical pauses.”
The talks at times seemed to move painfully slow, as each step of the communication moved from Doha, Qatar, or Cairo to Hamas in Gaza, then back again, before being relayed to Israel and the US.
“Every step of this is like pulling teeth,” one official said at the time.
Behind the scenes, the hostages were the key issue that prevented Israel from initially agreeing to a humanitarian pause, because the Israeli government did not want to signal any kind of relief in exchange for hostages, a senior State Department official said.
Numerous different permutations of a deal were discussed.
Israeli and US officials initially insisted that all women and children come out in the first part of the release. Hamas would only guarantee 50 and refused to produce identifying information about the hostages. By the time that Burns met in Doha with the emir of Qatar and David Barnea, the director of the Mossad, the fact that there was no identifying information about the hostages was a major sticking point.
On November 12, Biden informed the emir of Qatar that the negotiation could not move forward without this information in what a senior administration official described as a “very important and very intense call.” Shortly after, Hamas finally relented, seemingly guaranteeing that any final deal would entail the release of 50 women and children hostages.
Next steps
While the deal reached this week only returns 50 women and children, US officials projected confidence Tuesday that the agreement will ultimately pave the way for additional hostage releases.
There are 10 Americans who remain unaccounted for, including two women and a 3-year-old girl. Pressed by CNN on the remaining Americans, a senior administration official said the White House remains “determined to get everybody home,” and suggested that the deal is structured to “very much (incentivize) the release of everybody.”
An agreement to release hostages from Hamas would “unlock the potential for delivery of more humanitarian assistance” into Gaza, State Department spokesperson Matt Miller said Tuesday.
After their safe passage, the released hostages will be given medical attention in Israel, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters, suggesting that some could have longer-term medical needs following six weeks in “abhorrent conditions.” Then there will be efforts to repatriate citizens to their home countries and connect them with their families.
For any American citizens released, Kirby said, after medical care is prioritized, the US State Department will provide consular assistance.
It could be 24 to 48 hours before the Biden administration has confirmation as to whether the two American women and orphaned American 3-year-old were among those released, one US official said.

why. Just why. he is a convicted sex offender who wants genocide. Why do you support him?
I think (as unfortunately American politics is so binary), that he's better than Harris. That doesn't mean he's my ideal president (or conservative). There are plenty of (and I mean plenty) of other people who I think have far better views than him.
I could write a whole post on the Carroll v Trump case (with a pinch of salt - I'm not a lawyer), but i think the main issue for me is the issue of media and bias. He was convicted by a jury, in a court case where the evidence (I feel) was questionable, and in which is reputation precedes him. I obviously cannot say he didn't do it (nor would I wish to unless i 100% knew), but I think the evidence wasn't enough to confirm that he did. I think this is where feminism comes to play. If you're operating off of the idea that all women should be believed, and all men are socialised and conditioned (or that it is, perhaps, in their nature) to be rapists, then it's easy to agree with Ms Carroll. I think if, like me, you don't operate off that premise, the case becomes a lot messier. (Also, if you're talking about Stormy Daniels, she herself has said the one-night stand was consensual.)
As for wanting genocide, I honestly have no idea what you're referring to? I'd love some more clarity in another ask!
If you're asking more generally, Brett Cooper did a wonderful video that I think sums up a lot of my views (you can watch it here), especially what she says about transgender issues, something I'm deeply passionate about.
If you have more questions, feel free to send them my way!

Looking Back On: Fall Out Boy, “Folie à Deux”
Tumblr media
April 12, 2020
“Folie à Deux” came out when I was eight years old. Fall Out Boy (FOB) was a band I enjoyed but it wasn’t my favorite yet. That didn’t occur until 2010 when I got my first laptop and suddenly had access to play any music I wanted. After countless times listening, I came to think of it as one of the most musically intricate and well-developed albums FOB has ever produced. However, “Folie à Deux” didn’t sell well and ultimately contributed to FOB’s hiatus.
There is a plot in “Folie à Deux,” however, it is very hidden and not really understood without the additional “Fall Out Toy Works” comics, which was published in ‘09 and continued into ‘13. The comics are mostly unknown by many which makes talking about them all the more fun.
Tumblr media
“Fall Out Toy Works” was created by Pete Wentz of FOB, Darren Romanelli and Nathan Cabrera. It is written by Brett Lewis and illustrated by members of Imaginary Friends Studios. The story is a cyberpunk tale set in futuristic LA centered around a gynoid (female android) named Tiffany, the Toymaker’s perfect creation. Think “Pinocchio” meets “Pygmalion.”
Baron is the main antagonist and his company controls the production of pretty much everything in Los Angeles, even the weather but he has no control over his relationships. He asks the Toymaker to create a robot wife for him, named Tiffany. Talking about the story any farther without spoiling the ending is hard.
The trade paperback and webcomic version both had the final page of issue 5 removed, which changed the entire tone of the ending. (It is relatively easy to find online, though.) There are so many things that the comics explain, even the meaning of the album’s cover art: the bear is a boy robot named Crybaby.
To promote “Folie à Deux,” the whole label of Decaydance Records artists did a mixtape of demos and custom songs called “Welcome to the New Administration.” The promotional campaign began on Aug. 18, 2008, when Decaydance’s website was supposedly hacked by a shady group called “Citizens For Our Betterment.”
The link led to the group’s website which was red, white and blue. Links on the page were blocked needing specific IP addresses to work. The Decaydance site was normal the following day.
The Citizens for Our Betterment web page was updated every day, many posts referring to Nov. 4, the same day as the 2008 U.S. presidential election. The locked links were gradually opened and by Aug. 24, one link led to a page saying “FOB – The Return – November Four” in large big bold letters.
This caused some fans to believe that Fall Out Boy would release their new album on Nov. 4. Others theorized that this was another one of Pete’s attempts to raise political awareness as he previously held a rally for then U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate Barack Obama. Members of FOB members are publicly democrats.
Many bands from the Fueled by Ramen label posted on MySpace that same day with the title “Welcome to the New Administration.” Every post contained the word ten. On Aug. 25, the Citizens for Our Betterment website was redirected to the band’s Friends or Enemies page. On which was an image of a voting booth and ballots with the names of several Decaydance artists.
By clicking on each individual ballot, there was an audio clip from the band reading past posts on the Citizens for Our Betterment website. A mixtape was then made available for download. Listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUZKSsP8Sdo
As for the album itself, the album “Folie à Deux” itself is perfectly gapless as every song fades into the next. It starts with a hidden track called “Lullabye.” It’s a charming track featuring just acoustic guitar and Patrick singing. “Disloyal Order Of Water Buffaloes” is the first official song. The hook goes: “I’m a loose bolt of a complete machine. What a match, I’m half doomed and you’re semi-sweet.” These lines set the tone of the album with industrial elements and dark storytelling. The world of the Toymaker and how it intertwines with the music.
“I Don’t Care” kicks off with a classic rock tone, and the accompanying music video is zany and weird. Gilby Clarke from Guns N’ Roses starts the video by saying, “what the hell happened to rock and roll? Eyeliner? Energy drinks? And no guitar solos? I’ve taken sh*ts with bigger rock stars than them!”
The video is filled with miscellaneous sights. There’s the infamous spaghetti cat clip, band members dressed as nuns, Joe flashing people – and it ends with everyone removing a mask and being a different rock star. Clarke himself reveals himself being Sarah Palin in the end, winks.
It’s an all-round weird video. A reminder that ‘08 was a different time, but all and all it fit into the political climate.
Next on the album is “She’s My Winona,” named after actress Winona Ryder. It is a true bop and a slower-paced song with the chorus of “hell or glory, I don’t want anything in between. Then came a baby boy with long eyelashes. And daddy said ‘you gotta show the world the thunder’.”
This is followed by “America’s Suitehearts” with its nightmare carnival aesthetic that really adds to the story of the album and causes a lot of the nonsense to make sense.
“Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet,” in which the beat goes hard but the lyrics go harder, follows. It’s a song blatantly about infidelity within a relationship. Considering Pete Wentz’s divorce, it’s safe to assume that this was somewhat based in reality.
The music video is labeled as “A Weekend At Pete Rose’s,” and is on the old FriendsOrEnemies YouTube channel. In it, Panic! At The Disco’s Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith carry Pete’s dead body around the city.
“The (Shipped) Gold Standard” is a sad masterpiece about fearing loving another person. This was written before gay marriage was legalized and at a time where the LGBT+ community found safety within emo music and the Fall Out Boy fan base because FOB supported them.
“(Coffee’s For Closers)” is a song about lost faith, and it hits hard especially with its placement behind “The (Shipped) Gold Standard”.
“What A Catch, Donnie” has a music video and it’s an odd, nostalgic chronicle of the band’s (at the time of the video’s creation) seven-year history. Filled with memorabilia for other music videos, the video shows Patrick saving his fellow bandmates, as well as Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith. The end of the song includes lines from Fall Out Boy’s most iconic songs at the time.
“27” jumps the pace back up to fast rock and fades into (all songs fade, but this is the best fade on the record) my favorite song on the album, “Tiffany Blews.” The song makes almost no sense at all lyrically but musically it slaps. The best explanation I can give is that it’s about a hot girl. Lil Wayne has a spoken section that is my favorite part. “Not the boy I was, the boy I am is just venting – venting. Dear gravity, you held me down in this starless city.” It’s such a perfect moment of breath in a nonstop album.
Next is “w.a.m.s.,” which is an acronym that has never had a confirmed meaning. But, the bass in it is so good, and the ending’s stripped vocals are as well!
“20 Dollar Nose Bleed” is about drug abuse. It includes vocals from Brendon Urie and ends with a creepy poem by Pete Wentz. “It’s not me, it’s you, actually, it’s the taxidermy of you and me / Untie the balloons from around my neck and ground me / I’m just a racehorse on the track, send me back to the glue factory…”
“West Coast Smoker” has the futuristic synth sound that ties the whole album together and that sound is on full display. The vocals pulsing with the music is almost spiritual. I’m skipping the remixes and acoustic versions off of the deluxe version. Instead, I’m hopping over to the bonus tracks.
“Pavlove” is criminally underrated, and such a good song. The heavy rock cover of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” is also wonderful.
I love this album because every song in it is amazing – it goes without saying, “Folie à Deux” is my favorite album by my favorite band.

february 2025 wrap-up - adult fiction
Tumblr media
this month i read thirteen (13) adult novels.
emily wilde's map of the otherlands by heather fawcett 📚 🌟🌟🌟🌟
continuing this series very quickly! and i've already placed a hold on the recently released final book at my library, so i'll likely be reading that next month.
being both romantasy and a low-fantasy setting, this is a little outside of what i normally read, but i'm really enjoying it. i think emily and wendell are really cute and i love their love <3. that being said you can tell that this is the second book in a trilogy. there were certainly developments unique to this book, but it felt very much like it was getting the characters in a place to be ready for the third book, far more than the first book felt like set-up for the second.
however, what is being set up really intrigues me, especially since the final book is supposed to take place in faerie, at least more so than the other two have. very excited!
the murderbot diaries vol. 2 by martha wells 📖 🌟🌟🌟🌟
finally picked up the next two novellas in the series. i'm really enjoying myself, it's insane that it took so long for me to pick up this series again, but at lesat i'm back on it now!
i really like seeing murderbot's emotional development over the series. it obviously doesn't have the healthiest mindset at the beginning of the series, and over these first four novellas i've enjoyed seeing it learn and grow and really come into its own. i also like that murderbot becoming healthier, mental health wise, has no connecting to it becoming more human. i really how clear the series is that murderbot is not human, will never be human, and most importantly does not want to be human or even to be percieved as human. and that's not a flaw or something to change or anything like that. a decent chunk of similar stories to this have emphasized the non-human characters personhood by essentially being "they're basically exactly like a human!" and in contrast it's really interesting to see the murderbot diaries go "murderbot is not a human and never will be, and you should not expect it to be, but its still a person and it deserves all of the priveleges of personhood that humans are granted".
and i think murderbot itself was to some extent operating under a mindset of "to be a person i have to become like a human", and since humanity was not something it wanted it was avoiding acknowledging that it was a person; but now as the series goes on its developing a far healthier and kinder viewpoint of itself and its personhood and its emotions, et cetera.
glad it's finally reunited with the preservation crew :-) best friends.
prince of thorns by mark lawrence 📖 🌟
i'm sorry you can't be misogynistic AND boring. i'm still debating over whether or not i'm going to continue peter v. brett's demon cycle because, despite the awful writing of every single woman in the series, the overall plot and especially the main male character are incredibly interesting and i want to know how it ends, so i can drag my way through the rest of the series. but prince of thorns is not only full off the edgy-for-the-sake-of-being-edgy rape and general misogyny to be expected from horrible dudebro fantasy, it's also fucking boring! 😭 if you're going to expect me to read through your miserable depiction of women at least give me an interesting story to get out of it.
it took until around the ~150 page mark for anything to happen, which might not seem like a lot until i tell you that this book is only ~300 pages. that's half the book! and what little plot there is i simply don't care about because of how awful the protagonist is. other than "is a child", jorg has zero (0) redeemable traits. to take it back to the demon cycle, jardir is a horrible fucking person. easily as bad as jorg, if not worse. but he's an interesting character and therefore his pov chapters are compelling to read. rojer, also from the demon cycle, is kinda boring but he's a charming young man with a good heart so i care what happens to him.
prince of thorns's jorg is both despicable and boring. i'm sorry girl pick a struggle! because i hate jorg as a person and a character i simply can't get invested in his story. like, i could not care less if he lives or dies, i'm certainly not going to care if he succeeds in his quest for revenge.
a lady for a duke by alexis hall 📚 🌟🌟🌟🌟
gave alexis hall another chance after i fucking hated mortal follies. and i'm glad i did because i thoroughly enjoyed this! in fact i read this over the course of a single 12 hour timespan because i was just too hooked to put it down.
despite both being queer regency romances by the same author, a lady for a duke had nothing of what i hated from mortal follies. no insufferable self-aware omniscient narrator, no poorly executed magical realism, no horribly paternalistic and condescending love interest who acts like they know the main character's feelings better than they do, et cetera. i also felt it balanced the historical believability vs the revisionist wish fulfillment far better than mortal follies. the actions and words of the characters of mortal follies felt so anachronistic that it felt pointless to make it a period piece in the first place. but in a lady for a duke, while it is obviously not 100% historically accurate and i don't expected it to be, it felt far more believable as a period piece than mortal follies.
i'm not transfem so i'm not exactly the authority on the subject but i thought the depiction of viola as a trans woman and the way her gender was discussed (both in internal narration and in dialogue) was really good. i really felt for her at got a little choked up at multiple points. and i adored the relationship between her and gracewood; they were just so cute and fit together so well.
i like that gracewood finding out that viola was his old childhood friend that he thought was dead wasn't dragged out, and is instead resolved very early in the novel. i can see an alternate version of this where his finding out that viola is trans is the third-act conflict and that would feel very... gross? idk i feel like that would play into transmisogynistic tropes about straight men being "tricked" by trans women. so thankfully it didn't do that! and i also like that it makes very clear that viola not telling him that she was trans isn't a betrayal or a lie or anything like that - gracewood feels betrayed at first, but he's the one who comes to his senses and apologizes for that.
anyway overall quite good! i can add it to the very small roster of "romance novels i actually enjoyed".
the night ends with fire by k. x. song 📚 🌟🌟🌟🌟
this is absolutely not a romantasy and i have no clue why the publisher has labeled it as one. it has about as much of a romantic subplot as like. mistborn. or maybe even the fucking witcher.
but i thoroughly enjoyed it. k. x. song's writing style is intensely readable without feeling dumbed down or juvenile, and combined with the short chapter length it made it easy to just fly through this and finish in a single day. and i was invested from only a couple of chapters in.
i really liked meilin's internal struggle. i actually recommend this one so i don't want to get too deep into it and spoil things, but she struggles with not wanting to become like her parents (for different reasons) but at the end of the novel when she looks back on her actions she realizes that she's been acting exactly like them. and her conflict over her own morality and how much she even cares about that - does she actually care about doing the right thing or does she just care about other people thinking she's doing the right thing, et cetera - was really interesting, especially as the spirit magic slowly corrupts her.
will definitely pick up the sequel when my library gets it in.
faebound by saara el-arifi 📚 🌟🌟🌟🌟
once again i have no idea why publishers market this as a romantasy, though it's more understandable as a romantasy than the night ends with fire.
i've said it before but i love when messy dyke drama is represented in books outside of lesbian litfic. yeeran and furi are soooo messy but in a fun way not a way that makes you want to them to break up. i felt like the development of their relationship was very natural; despite the bad blood between them, the forced proximity and the already heightened emotions naturally lends itself to passion. and the other romantic subplot, between lettle and rayan, was also compelling, though they were more "cute and sweet (but also tragic)" as opposed to yeeran and []'s "messy and passionate (and also tragic)".
i did not see any of the major twists coming, but looking back i can see that the clues were there from the beginning, which is the mark of a good twist! definitely ended in an intriguing place, and i'm excited to pick up cursebound soon. my library already has it in their collection, it's just chekced out right now, so i just have to place a hold.
2001: a space odyssey by arthur c. clarke 📖 🌟🌟🌟
no clue what this guy was on about. i enjoyed arthur c. clarke's prose, it's simple without feeling dumbed down, but once we got past the part with bowman and hal and the discovery and started getting into the more high-concept stuff at the end i literally had to look up a summary to understand what was happened 😭 unsure if the issue here is my lack of familiarity with litfic or my lack of familiarity with science fiction, because both of them apply to this book.
shorefall by robert jackson bennett 📖 🌟🌟🌟🌟
excited to be continuing this series! i really loved it. there's not a lot i can say because all of the things i really loved are heavily dependant on you having read the first book, and i don't want to spoil anything because this is (thus far) a series i really recommend, but in a general sense i really like the turns this took. there was one major twist that i almost guessed, i was just a little off, and that was exciting to read.
really like the development of our main characters' relationships to each other. while they certainly became friends in the first book, it was heavily based on surviving something traumatic together and being bonded by that experience. now, with shorefall taking place years after foundryside, you definitely get a sense of how close they've become and how comfortable they are in each other's presence. and especially with some things that happen in shorefall, they are certainly a lot closer, and bonded on a far deeper level, than they were at the end of foundryside.
was very worried that my favorite character wasn't going to make an appearance because we were about halfway through and he hadn't shown up, but he did appear shortly after that :-).
midnight in everwood by m.a. kuzniar 📚 🌟🌟
this was on my "25 books to read in 2025" and i was convinced i was going to have to buy it because it's only published in the uk, but i went to the library with a friend the other day and wouldn't you know this was right there on the new book display!
that being said... this is so aggressively average. every character is incredibly one-dimensional, just bundles of tropes with names, and even when i can tell that kuzniar is trying to give them more depth, it's just not landing. the setting is very poorly realized; the characters could be standing in a blank void for all i knew. the entire experience of reading this was the exact opposite of being immersed in a story.
additionally, so much of the plot relies on marietta being ignorant and naive to the point that it's infuriating. her getting captured, and therefore kicking off the majority of the novel, is entirely the result of her own stupidity. and i'm supposed to believe that she's reading to move out and support herself?
water moon by samantha sotto yamabao 📚 🌟🌟🌟🌟
the reviews were right to call this a studio ghibli film in novel form - it strikes that same perfect balance where it's full of fairy-tale-esque worldbuiling and whimsy but it's also not afraid to get serious and emotional when it needs to.
i really loved the atmosphere of this book. the other world that hana and her family are from felt very dreamlike and intangible but not in a "this is a very poorly fleshed out setting" way, in an intentional way. it's also somewhat interestingly written; it starts out almost litfic in execution but settles into a more expected fantasy style by the end.
i loved both hana and keishin individually as characters and i loved their relationship. despite only knowing each other for a few days, the progression of their feelings for each other still managed to feel natural. given who they are as people, the places they are in their lives, and the exact circumstances under which they meet, it makes perfect sense that they'd connect as deeply as they do as quickly as they do.
x-men: the legacy quest book three by steve lyons 📖 🌟🌟🌟
somewhat of a mediocre end to the trilogy. not as bad as book two, but certainly not as strong as book one was.
book three had a really strong middle that i flew right through, but a really slow and boring beginning and end. it took me a while to get invested in the story (which is why this ~300 page mass market paperback took me a couple of months to finish lmao) and then after i got past that rising action and into the climax i slowed down again.
also had some incredibly clumsy metaphors for real-world oppression but i mean. it's x-men lmao.
network effect by martha wells 📖 🌟🌟🌟🌟
finished the first and (thus far) only full novel in the series! and i really enjoyed it, and i'm really looking forward to completely catching up with the series next month.
this far into a series it's difficult to really talk about what i enjoyed about network effect without repeating what i enjoyed about vol. 2 earlier this month, so sorry for being vague but i just love the development of murderbot's friendships and its slow but sure healing from a lifetime of abuse. i want that funny little death robot to be happy and healthy so badly and we're slowly inching our way there.
sister snake by amanda lee koe 📚 🌟🌟🌟
complicated feelings on this one. i really enjoyed the majority of it, but there was this one plot point where the moment it was introduced i was like. it already hurts my enjoyment that this happens at all and how this ends up playing out could cook the entire book. and. i think it did? like, this was going to be a four star and the way this one thing played out brought it to a solid right down the middle 2.5 that i'm rounding up to a three.
spoilers i guess if you don't want them: su straight up murders emerald's best (and i think only?) friend, and when emerald finds out about this su isn't really sorry and doesn't really apologize, and then at the very end of the novel su is severely injured and emerald ends up spending an indeterminate period of her life nursing her sister back to health. and that just didn't really sit right with me? especially after most of the post-taking human form interactions we learn about between the snake sisters involve su being really shitty to emerald, and then this on top of that... despite what the final paragraph wants me to believe, i didn't see this as a powerful example of the deep bonds of sisterhood and the love these women had for each other, i saw it as a deeply depressing example of a queer woman dedicating her life to caring for a shitty conservative relative out of obligation and loneliness.
aside from that i think a lot of the characters felt a little based in stereotypes, especially the friend who dies and the friends emerald briefly makes in singapore. wish i liked it better because the prose itself was so strong.

When she didn't reach for his hands, he pulled them back, trying not to let his expression droop. But his face was too crystal clear. He had failed his own rules, as well as the ones they had set between them. Brett had caught feelings, he had gotten attached. Addicted. He should have known that this would happen.
"But is the dream worth it, if I'm not with you?" He said, despondent. It sounded awful and he knew it. But it was true. He cast it to the side, trying to build up his resolve, his facade. He was a man, men don't act like this, they don't beg their not-girlfriends to stay with them. "No, forget that, you're right, this was the agreement. I'm sorry. Ignore me."
Tumblr media
❝  Brett,❞ she pleaded as if she was talking with a child. Even as she felt her own heart tumble straight down into her stomach. He got his dream offer, she was almost done with the book. It was over. ❝  Because we both agreed. We agreed that it would be just a physical thing. We agreed, no strings attached, that once you got called up, you would go. And once I was done with the book, we would stop. ❞
No, she would not be the reason he didn't chase his dream wherever it went. He worked to hard on it. And she knew she was too set in her own ways, it would be a matter of time before she got bored like she usually did and moved on to the next pretty face. Right? It would be a matter of time before she felt homesick and ran back to New York. Right?
Seeing his hand waiting, reaching, for hers, she strengthened her resolve. Crossing her arms, she looked up at him, holding back any emotion. ❝  What is there left to say Brett? You got called up. I get it. It's your dream, there's nothing else to say. ❞

A case with the potential to disrupt Donald Trump’s drive to return to the White House is putting the Supreme Court uncomfortably at the center of the 2024 presidential campaign.
In arguments Thursday, the justices will, for the first time, wrestle with a constitutional provision adopted after the Civil War to prevent former officeholders who “engaged in insurrection” from reclaiming power.
The case is the court’s most direct involvement in a presidential election since Bush v. Gore, a decision delivered a quarter-century ago that effectively delivered the 2000 election to Republican George W. Bush. It comes to a court that has been buffeted by criticism over ethics, which led the justices to adopt their first code of conduct in November, and at a time when public approval of the court is diminished, at near-record lows in surveys.
The dispute stems from the push by Republican and independent voters in Colorado to kick Trump off the state’s Republican primary ballot because of his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden, culminating in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Colorado’s highest court determined that Trump incited the riot in the nation’s capital and is ineligible to be president again as a result and should not be on the ballot for the state’s primary on March 5.
A victory for the Colorado voters would amount to a declaration from the justices, who include three appointed by Trump when he was president, that he did engage in insurrection and is barred by the 14th Amendment from holding office again. That would allow states to keep him off the ballot and imperil his campaign.
A definitive ruling for Trump would end efforts in Colorado, Maine, and elsewhere to prevent his name from appearing on the ballot.
The justices could opt for a less conclusive outcome, but with the knowledge that the issue could return to them, perhaps after the general election in November and in a full-blown constitutional crisis.
The court has signaled it will try to act quickly, dramatically shortening the period in which it receives written briefing and holds arguments in the courtroom.
Trump is separately appealing to the state court a ruling by Maine’s Democratic secretary of state, Shenna Bellows, that he was ineligible to appear on that state’s ballot over his role in the Capitol attack. Colorado Supreme Court and the Maine Secretary of State’s rulings are on hold until the appeals play out.
The former president is not expected to attend the Supreme Court session this coming week, though he has shown up for court proceedings in the civil lawsuits and criminal charges he is fighting.
Whatever the justices decide, they see more of Trump, whose criminal charges related to Jan. 6 and other issues. Other election-related litigation was possible.
In 2000, in Bush v. Gore, the court and the parties were divided over whether the justices should intervene.
The conservative-driven 5-4 decision has been heavily criticized ever since, especially given that the court cautioned against using the case as precedent when the unsigned majority opinion declared that “our consideration is limited to the present circumstances.”
Trump’s campaign declined to make anyone available for this story, but his lawyers urged the justices not to delay.
Donald Sherman, the top lawyer at the group behind the ballot challenge, said voters and election officials need to have an answer quickly.
Justice Clarence Thomas is the only sitting member of the court who was on the bench for Bush v. Gore. He was part of that majority.
But three other justices joined the legal fight on Bush’s side: Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Bush eventually put Roberts on a federal appeals court and appointed him chief justice. Bush hired Kavanaugh to White House jobs before making him an appellate judge.
Kavanaugh and Barrett were elevated to the Supreme Court, which appointed Justice Neil Gorsuch.
Thomas has ignored calls by some Democratic lawmakers and ethics professors to step aside from the current case. They note that his wife, Ginni Thomas, supported Trump’s effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Ginni Thomas repeatedly texted White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows in the weeks after that election, once referring to it as a “heist,” and she attended the rally that preceded the storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters. Nearly two years later, she told the congressional committee investigating the attack that she regretted sending the texts.
Trump lost 60 different court challenges to his false claims that there was massive voter fraud that would have changed the results of that election.
The Supreme Court ruled repeatedly ruled against Trump and his allies in 2020 election-related lawsuits, as well as his efforts to keep documents related to Jan. 6 and his tax returns from being turned over to congressional committees.
But the conservative majority Trump’s appointees cemented has produced decisions that overturned the five-decade-old constitutional right to abortion, expanded gun rights, and struck down affirmative action in college admissions.
The issue of whether Trump can be on the ballot is just one among several matters related to the former president or Jan. 6 that have reached the high court. The justices declined a request from special counsel Jack Smith to rule swiftly on Trump’s claims that he is immune from prosecution, though the issue could be back before the court soon, depending on the ruling of a Washington-based appeals court.
In April, the court will hear an appeal that could upend hundreds of charges stemming from the Capitol riot, including against Trump.

the gang (+ jr and a.b)’s ideal date
(inside job) sorry if anyone’s done this before haha I just had this idea
reagan:
despite her being like my main crush/f/o, she was probably the hardest to do but I feel like it would really depend on her mood. she’d either want to go to a museum (“we both know museums are the sexiest places on Earth!”) or just chilling at home watching tv.
if you two go to a museum, she’d probably really enjoy holding your hand while you walk around. physical touch is more bearable for her when she’s engaging in her special interests or doing something she enjoys.
she also doesn’t watch a lot of tv, so when you’re watching stuff with her, she usually lets you pick what to watch. I think she’d enjoy things like physiological horror. (same reagan, same)
restaurants are a nightmare tho. like she gets so stressed and overwhelmed as it’s loud, and she really struggles to be herself in busy environments, especially when eating.
if she’s eating a comfort food though, she can manage!!
you also bond when ur in the car together! it sounds stupid, but she probably ends up talking about smth rlly random, and you two talk about it for hours.
it could just start off with smth like “hey,, y/n, is a hotdog a sandwich?”
and ya’ll most likely lightheartedly argue about it for ages.
she doesn’t say it a lot, but she really loves and appreciates spending time with you.
brett:
OH <33 BRETT’S SUCH A SUCKER FOR SIMPLE CUTE DATES
like take him on a picnic in the woods (he’d totally make you and him matching flower crowns)
also taking him to still valley and having an 80s style date, it would make him cry :((( /pos
speaking of, after a long day of work, pls cuddle him on the couch and watch the growing years with him <333
it would make his year
just anything soft & simple would just make brett melt :( like reagan he finds big dates v overwhelming
but if there was anywhere in particular he wanted to go, but couldn’t because he was so anxious, get the man a fidget toy to fiddle with.
gigi:
this was quite hard, but y’know those photoshoot places you can go to with pretty backgrounds, where you take photos? yea, she’d like those. then taking you to a fancy restaurant after.
also movie nights where you cuddle on the couch watching shit and she points out the subliminal messages in them.
smth like “hey, y/n, did you know that Hwang represents the shadow gouvernment?”
also I think as a treat, maybe once a month, if you’re comfortable enough, she’d take you to a club!
you’d dance together and it’s a v nice experience.
very big on double dates. idk why, she just gives that vibe.
also CLOTHES SHOPPING. like you two will go to the store, try on different clothes, and she WILL compliment you.
glenn:
again i find mr. dolphman hard to write so bear with me
my guy would melt if you took him to like an raf museum? like just him explaining all the parts of the plane, you not really understanding, but just saying “that’s lovely, dear,”
also classic dates! fancy restaurants, cinema, etc etc.
i think he’d be really into hearty food, like lasagne.
he’d also be obsessed with surprising you with food.
andre:
CONCERTS.
idk why, he’s just the type of guy to take you to a lot of concerts. he really enjoys high-energy experiences with you like that.
also going to get fast food at 3am. like my dude would randomly text you at 3:00 in the morning like “hey babe, wanna get mcdonalds?”
like gigi, he’d take you to clubs. but not as a treat like gigi, i mean like every 2 weeks.
myc:
y’know those 50’s style diners? yea. that’s myc’s shit.
