The Best of the 1st Half -*2019 Pundit’s PlayLi$t*

Yeah so quite a bit has gone down since the ball dropped.

Everyone talks about how having a baby can change a person, but in my opinion it doesn’t change a person as much as it evolves a person into someone that can still love all of the stuff they always loved, *plus* a little person that they now put before anything else in their day to day life. My friends, that is where I am at in this moment in life. No, I do not write as much as I used to, but I’m happier now than have been in some time, and I love music just as much as I ever did. I am still learning the balance, but I’m also pretty excited to have a little daughter that I will be able to share my highly opinionated thoughts on hip-hop with, whether she wants to hear them or not (most likely not).

These rankings are based on the following key factors: my personal favorites (this is technically not just a list of my favorite songs), plus songs that I thought were especially well done or influential (even if they may not have resonated me as much as everyone else), diverse (I didn’t want to have 10 songs from the same artist, but I would have if I was only basing this list on personal faves), especially strong production and/or verses, and the song had to be officially released prior to July 1st.

As for the year in rap music in general up through the close of June, it has been a strong one. What the genre has lacked in strong “mainstream” releases, it has made up for with enough fantastic underground hip-hop projects that belong in steady rotation for a long time. So here it is, at last, my list of the best rap songs of the first half of 2019… 🙏

1. “Palmolive” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. Pusha T & Killer Mike

(Bandana is quite an album, and “Palmolive” is quite a song. One terrific verse from Freddie, a great hook from Killer Mike, and then a verse of the year front runner with Pusha’s verse, all over a soulful Madlib back-drop?? Yikes. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib have made all rap fans very proud in 2019.)

2. “Thank God” - Tree

(Tree’s We Grown Now is such an amazing album. I can’t recall the last time I heard a project that felt like a living, breathing work of art that logs the life of a man that has been through life’s ups and downs and is just happy to be here to talk about it.)

(Blown away. Black Thought and Griselda?? Bars on top of bars on top of bars...two verse of the year contenders, easily.)

4. “Ricky” - Denzel Curry

(As soon as you press play, you can feel the humidity coming off of this song as if we were in the crowd with Curry down in Florida. A wonderful homage to his father, and the Carol City of which he hails.)

5. “Massage Seats” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

(Smooth as Helllll. “This ain’t for soccer mamas this is for the underground” is right.)

6. “Funeral March (The Dirge)” - Your Old Droog feat. Mach-Hommy

(One of the hardest sounding songs in recent memory. I can hear these too aggressive rhymers do this all day.)

7. “Crime Pays” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

(So quintessential to Bandana’s vibe this thing feels like it has a pulse. I was listening to this on my walk home the other day and it put me in such a breezy headspace, I can’t even describe it any other way than simply saying it’s another classic Madlib production.)

8. “5 to 50” - Benny feat. India

(Captivating. Benny and The Alchemist join forces to concoct a song so real it makes 90% of drug dealer talk in rap music sound phony.)

9. “There U R” - Tree

(Give this man his flowers now. There are a lot of talented artists in rap music, but none tackle a song like an old Blues man...none except Tree, that is.)

10. “Freestyle Shit” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

(Pffffew, that Gibbs delivery....right from the get-go on the album’s first song it’s so clear that Bandana is a special project.)

11. “Sunday School” - Benny feat. 38 Spesh & Jadakiss

(Good luck picking the best verse here! All three kill it, but Spesh may end up pulling ahead with a few key haymakers.)

12. “Situations” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

(One of Bandana’s more minimalistic instrumentals, and it takes off thanks to the jet pack provided by Gibbs’ absolutely sensational contributions on this one.)

(I hope with all of my heart that songs like this aren’t part of Tree’s process of letting go of the music biz, but even if it is, what a beautiful way to go out.)

15. “Bandana” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. Assassin

(While it may not have made the final cut of the Bandana album that shares it’s name, this reggae-tinged Madlib blessed riot starter has been one of my favorite songs of the year since it dropped and it keeps feeling better to me.)

(Tree kills it with the autobiographical joints, and this soulful walk down memory lane is as enthralling as an audio diary.)

(Straight menace music. Muggs & Eto would have made Mobb Deep proud with “Dominate”...especially Muggs, this beat is brutal!)

19. “Under The Train (Transporting)” - Your Old Droog

(Droog’s Transportation album may be the perfect travelling companion for moving through the streets of NYC, and this song may be the crown jewel. This has the feel of a classic New York anthem and I am crazy for it.)

(Another year, another thought provoking Quelle Chris project. He seems to be getting better with age, is that possible?)

21. “Attics” - DJ Muggs & Eto

(Sure Muggs & Eto dropped a banger of an album with Hell’s Roof, .but “Attics” has the strength to be a career defining track for Eto. This is dark poetry from the hungriest parts of upstate NY.)

22. “ZUU” - Denzel Curry

(A rousing intro to what I would consider the best “mainstream” rap album of 2019 so far.)

23. “Chasing Ghosts” - Your Old Droog feat. Roc Marciano

(What a great example of why these two are so good at what they do. Eerie underground hip-hop at its’ finest.)

(One of the funkier standouts from Bandana, and album full of standouts. Paak and Gibbs tap dance all over this one.)

(At this point, what else needs to be said about the potency of these two rap-writers? Calling it “coke rap” wouldn’t even begin to explain how good these two are when it comes to rapping.)

(What a slept-on smash from Buddy and 03 Greedo. Both artists do the West Coast proud with one of my favorite cuts off of the deluxe edition of Harlan & Alondra.)

(As if that line-up isn’t enough to make any hip-hop head salivate, what’s even more impressive is the final product manages to meet expectations.)

(True Stories is quite possibly my favorite project from Gasol’s impressive discography, and this one has been in my rotation for all of 2019 thus far. Jamal is another one of upstate New York’s gem MCs, so if you’re a fan of Benny and Griselda, definitely check out Niagara’s Jamal Gasol.)

38. “Field Negro” - Royce Da 5′9″

(An unorthodox production anchored by one of the best writers in the history of the genre, that’s all. Royce murders this thing with so many quotables...yet you’re still somehow sleeping on Royce???)

(What happens when a collection of some of NYC’s most talented, but least heralded MC’s join forces to deliver what sounds like a classic mid-90′s throwback joint? They create one of the smoothest rap songs of 2019.)

(Beautifully bleak music from Billy Woods and Kenny Segal, who demonstrate brilliant chemistry throughout Hiding Places.)

41. “Bad Boys” - Pivot Gang (Joseph Chilliams, Saba, MFnMelo) feat. Smino

(This one didn’t blow up - at least not yet - but I have no idea why!? This track, like so much of Pivot Gang’s You Can’t Sit With Us album, is such a fantastic showcase for Chi-town’s deep hip-hop scene.)

Thank you, I like your muses too! I kinda even like them a bit better because they are either very creative depictions of Canon characters or complete OCs and I admire everyone who can do that. Personally, I can’t and yeah. I think I have told you these things before, too, but you know, complimenting too much (if it is honest) never hurt. :)

Hmm. Tbh I can see why you think he is underdeveloped. I stick to canon a lot and try to be very close to it, which kind of always limits some things I can do. However, I also would argue that I kind of know sans almost... too well??? And thus my development has kind of faltered a lot recently. In the beginning I wrote way more headcanons about things and now its just too obvious to me. xD Might sound weird but I can just go into “sans mode” and don’t need to think about it at all anymore.

Either way, I would like to develop him more, but I also want to do it slow burn. So if a thread I have leads to character development, he will get that (for this thread, since my blog isn’t one verse). But for this I need some deep character interactions... and developmental things to happen. :(

Aaah makes me glad you agree because I know how picky you are with Sans depictions ;U ; I will wear it as badge of honor!!

And your blogs are ALL my favs, even the ones I don’t know the fandoms of. But I love skimming through your stuff and I just enjoy seeing you on my dash in general. Even OOC, because your OOC stuff is very great most of the time. ;3

Swoop tried to make Tarantulas and Bob have a table-eating contest, and punched Tarantulas hen he refused. Laserbeak came down and laid down the law. It was, Prowl thinks, about damn time.

The spider documentary was very rude about how it described spiders. Calling them freaks and monsters. Hmph.

2. Work you are most proud of (and why):

probably either days of dark or only forever. days of dark took me and charl ages to plan and it’s the first multi chapter fic i’ve ever written and i’m so in love w the universe and how hard we’ve worked. only forever is just written in a style i’ve never really explored, and it was something new for me that was really worth me almost pulling my hair out.

3. Work you are least proud of (and why):

none, tbh, but maybe when i get there, b/c i feel like that could have been fleshed out a lot more.

still by far is this piece from days of dark that was a mix of me and charl’s ideas for this part

While Alec’s apartment faces south, looking out over Battery Park with the Statue of Liberty just visible in the far distance, Magnus’ apartment looks north, into the depths of Manhattan. There’s probably some kind of symbolism there, what with how Alec’s apartment faces the calm of the water and Magnus’ faces the rush of the city, but Alec doesn’t care which view they choose, because he ends up looking at Magnus for the entire night regardless.

5. Share or describe a favorite comment you received:

i treasure every comment tbh - but the comments i got on only forever made me tear up because of how supportive everyone was. also the comments on some kind of wonderful were cute too, since i’ve had some people tell me they’d love to see the universe expanded.

6. A time when writing was really, really hard:

god, fucking nano. i’ve never done nanowrimo before and decided to dive in b/c my friends were doing it and ohhh my god. i have never gotten that much writing done in my life and while i’m ridiculously proud for finishing two minutes before midnight i also remember it being so fucking hard to focus sometimes b/c i instantly felt like shit if all my free time wasn’t dedicated to writing.

7. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

probably my general comfort with fight scenes - i’m quite proud of one day and ow that turned out in terms of descriptions and managing to write something coherent and easy to follow that’s interwoven in a fight is a skill i hope to expand more. it also comes in handy w days of dark.

8. How did you grow as a writer this year:

i mean this is the first year i sat down and started actually writing fic. i used to write short pieces in old fandoms but never like this, and meeting other writers helped so so much. the difference between my recent pieces and my first fic in the shadowhunters fandom is wild, and while i was never bad i was just a little rusty. i’m lucky enough to have people who had faith in me and pushed me to be my best.

9. How do you hope to grow next year:

i want to write something really long and fleshed out. it always scares me, which is why i stick to shorter pieces (unless someone is there w/ me hence days of dark) but i’d love to write a long multi chapter. also exploring different styles and maybe branching out to other ships i enjoy. i don’t really know - but i’m excited.

10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

posh charlyle 4 sure. also all of the heart & soul squad in general. charl never quit cheering for me even when writing felt like such a chore and always inspired me to be better and to see the best in my writing. the heart & soul squad always gave me someone to look to in times of trouble with my writing and we’re such a cute lil writing community it makes me v happy and feel v comfortable w my work.

11. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

other than my vast knowledge of new york city? nah

12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

i would say to just do it, dude. it can get so draining to try and meet others expectations and try to write something perfect when you’re just starting out but i think it’s important to try and try again and keep working on the craft, it’s the only way you’ll improve. also finding a beta/writing buddy who you feel comfortable with is a huge help. make sure they motivate you and give you actual criticism too.

13. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

the shadowhunters big bang for starters! i’m hype about that fic - also days of dark is gonna continue next year. maybe another multichapter if i think of one and can get excited about it. who knows!!

Okay... I was driving my parents car to work. I am 19. No tickets or crashes since I was 15 and a half. I was rear ended when I stopped for an ambulance. My parents have insurance on that car, but I am not on their policy. I did have my mother's permission to use the vehicle. I had a quote for car insurance through a well-known national company. They were aware I had a UK licence for 5 years and had no convictions, claims etc. I rang and spoke to a representative and she confirmed the quote. The following day I decided to accept and called them. We went through my information and the agent said, so you were born in the UK? I said no, I am a UK citizen but I was born abroad. The quote then went up by 200 !!!! I took issue and spoke to a manger who said this was legitimate when I told him I was certain it was illegal since the only information that had changed was my place of birth, he eventually said he would honour the original quote. I then bought the policy with a one-off payment. Insurance is a racket and I don't think they should be alllowed to get by with this. Home insurance wants to raise dwelling coverege?

I purchased a townhome in March of 2013 for $183k in Florida. It is in a 200-unit subdivision that just completed all construction and sold out all last remaining units a few months ago. When I signed up for home insurance, the insurance company set my dwelling coverage to $183k. I told them that it isn't accurate for them to base dwelling coverage on market price because the replacement cost must be lower since market price includes land and profits the builder makes. Long story short, they convinced me to stay at $183 because they said costs were rising and so forth. I decided not to fight it. Fast forward to this year, and now they are proposing to increase the dwelling coverage to $203k (11% increase). Funny thing is that for my exact townhome model, about 20 units were sold in the last year with prices averaging in the upper $180s (slightly above what I paid). I called the insurance company to let them have a piece of my mind, and they told me they use an independent 3rd party company to price the replacement costs. I told them it's BS because it's way above average market price and replacement costs is always below market price. They asked me to send them documents from when I purchased the home that details the construction materials used and upgrades so that they can reevaluate the dwelling coverage. My question is, why is the burden of proof on me to prove to the insurance company that dwelling coverage should be lowered? Why can't they just reduce it to what I tell them to reduce it to? After all, I am the customer who pays for the insurance. If my house is ever destroyed and I underinsured, that's my problem not theirs. I just find it strange that I'm paying for an insurance service and the insurance company decides what the replacement cost is, not me. Even though it doesn't affect them.""

I'm 24, and I've been reading a lot of posts online about people who have many health ailments and do not have insurance to get treated or go to the ER then have a massive bill afterwards. I don't understand why these individuals are not hunting around for the cheapest medical insurance they can find prior. There are individual plans out there, directly through the insurance companies, also family plans. You can pick and choose your premiums/deductibles/co-pays, hunt around for what suits your needs best. The single plans especially, can be and most of the time are, affordable. I don't understand why people do not apply for basic health insurance that would cover them in an emergency, or for general routine health-care. Premiums can be as low as 60-100 a month for a single person. Please can someone explain to me why these people are not taking advantage of what is out there?
