film red au: the rhp get to elegia and when looking at the music school it comes up that uta has the sing-sing fruit. this causes everyone in the vicinity to immediately go on high alert and immediately try and rush them off the island. shanks asks what going on and gordon explains that there is a demon sealed away on the island woth the power of a previous user of the sing-sing fruit and the demon is constantly influencing people to sing the song to release it but only the one with the power of the sing sing fruit can, uta asks with tears i her eyes if this means she cant go to the music school and before shanks can say anything gordon interjects again and says that they will just send a teacher to her, they were thinking of opening a second school anyways. all this is happening while they are being rushed back to the red force, and when asked where the teacher should meet them he says foosha village on dawn and thats how uasl gets another steady parental figure and how the elegia school of music opens a branch in goa kingdom

Musica Luffy aka Uta and Luffy Swap au aka the Luffy can sing au

🌠BACKSTORY

After years of holding off finding someone to eat the ‘Gum-Gum fruit’ and Sing-Sing Fruit, shanks finds himself on a small island. Specifically, Dawn Island is home to two significant people. Monkey D Luffy and Portgas D Ace, one with a voice to inspire others and the other with the blood to lead a new generation. These two hold the power and determination to destroy the world government and free countless people. When Shanks finds them (or specifically his daughter befriends them) he first gives Luffy the SIng- Sing Fruit. The child is naive and quick to trust the newfound family of pirates, while Ace is warry. Despite Shank's good intentions and actually caring for the boy a lot. After the accidental destruction of Elegia at the hands of a possessed Luffy. Shanks leaves Luffy on Elegia and takes on the blame for the destruction, leaving Luffy to believe the Pirates betrayed and abandoned him. After years of training his voice, he can finally sing for the world's people, digitally broadcasting his voice to anyone who wants to listen. Through this, he can learn about the outside world he was shielded from. Creating a black and White moral of the world. Pirates Evil- Marines good. However, one night, he stumbles upon the truth of what happened. The night he was abandoned. How Shanks fought the Demon that possessed him and saved him. And how he (Luffy)- was the one that destroyed Elegia. He feels lied to, not by the Sanks and the others but by the people! How could they tell him how evil Pirates were when Shanks saved him and tried to save the island Luffy destroyed! Resentment and Self-hatred begin to bubble- and along with it, a plan.

The Plan

If Luffy can't convince normal civilians that pirates CAN be good, he'll just convince everyone that anybody can be WORSE.

Things i forgot to point out: 1) When planning this trip to Elegia, Uta didn't want to go and Ace stayed behind on Dawn, Luffy was the only one who went. 2) When Shanks returned, Uta was saddened but Ace was furious, having just met Luffy and bonded with him like a brother. 3) Sabo exists, he just hasn't been super important in this au, he is practically the same as he was in the OG series. The fire happens, and Ace is alone until Uta and Shanks return. 4) The only reason Ace comes around to trust Shanks and Uta, is because they know his lineage and don't hate him for it and because Shanks tells him Luffy is still alive. He's just found a new passion. (a lie) 5) Uta stays fruitless, however, is incredibly trained in Haki. Having stayed on Shanks Crew as their musician. Is the one that learns the truth first about what happened on Elegia. 6) Ace is our universe Luffy. Of course a lot more serious and and older, but he still holds the same humor he did in the past. He stays on Dawn Island a little longer, leaving when he turns 20. He has the gum-gum fruit. Deuce is on the crew- along with the og Strawhats and more. Except Deuce has the flame-flame fruit. 7) Sabo is the same, a revolutionary. The only difference is that he recovers from amnesia by listening to Luffy's singing. 8) Shank's hat is still on Shank's head. Ace only wants to be remembered, but Luffy still wants to be the pirate king.

Film red 💥: Everything is almost the same- Ace and Uta specifically fall for Luffy's trap. Luffy is still gonna try and unalive himself trapping everyone in his sing world. The only difference is that he's specifically targeting civilians. Proving to everyone anyone can be evil. However, due to selfish reasons, he lets Ace and Uta stay cause he missed them and he honestly thought he'd never see them again.

Anybody he obviously deems a threat- gets trapped the same way in the movie. So the movie is practically the same- but instead of finding out what happened later in the movie, Ace finds out through Uta pretty early on.

Sabo and Shanks are still on the other side,the real world, fighting against marines. Everything continues until Tot Musica is summoned. Luffy is tired due to fatigue and having to stay awake in the real and sing world. Not thinking straight, he thinks if he summons Tot Musica and lets the demon possess him again. If they (Ace, Uta, sabo, Shanks, and all the other pirates) destroy Tot Musica, they unalive him. He's willing to do this and summons Tot Musica, the fight goes as normal, and they're even able to save Luffy.

The movie ends the same way in the Og. He's saved from the demon, shanks officially, and verbally adopts Luffy. Luffy- (who's been taking wake-wake shrooms (Which keeps a person awake but shorten their life span) is given the cure after he releases everyone from his sing world.

Ace, Sabo, Luffy, and Uta reunite and promise to keep in touch via letters and den dens. Luffy is given the strawhat when he finally announces his dream “To be the most free man and free other people with his voice” and to be the freest, you have to become the pirate king.

His first pirate crew (even though Ace offers for him to join his crew- Luffy immediately refuses since “if I'm going to be pirate king, then i have to be the captain” argument.) consists of Uta and og strawhat crew (Ace has a giant pirate crew- and thought people with big dreams should stick together, so he sent them to watch over his little brother).

i need to know what you think about uta being ace's and sabo's sister too... like imagine a perfect world where uta existed without the mess of film red (i did enjoy it but also uhhhhhhhh there are a lot of weird things abt it bc i dont think shanks would actually take in uta like that considering he did experience piracy as a kid. so why would he put uta through that even if she'd stay put on the ship–) ANYWAY. so lets say shanks found uta after obtaining the devil fruit and takes her to the nearest island (dawn island.) then found makino and luffy and convinces her to stay w them or whatever.

i imagine that ace and uta do bicker w each other a lot. however sabo is very kind and excited to have a sister!! he's protective of her and enjoys her songs. (which brings out a surprising singing side from sabo ehe...)

i also imagine that uta is as rowdy and gluttonous as her brothers tbh. i mean, she's the only girl there so she's more than likely to be influenced by them. ALSO imagine uta being raised by dadan wheewwwww.... i think if she was raised alongside asl bros, she'd end up way different than she did in film red and well- actually become a pirate– (maybe rivaling with her brothers? that or she acts as luffy's biggest rival to be pirate king as her way of supporting his dream) (idk im just thinking as i type)

so everythings the same but uta is there with three insane brothers (shes as insane too... she is their equal). though it's lowkey clear dadan has a favorite (she loves a tough daughter) and god everything w garp would be so insane too like. before sabo was accepted and started living with the bandits, garp was happy to have a granddaughter (till she said she wanted to become a pirate too 😭) BUT he makes sure ace and luffy treats their sister right and is again being a favorite– however, she wouldn't suck up to him like that. like how the brothers would shield each other from garp, she would also shield them from garp !!

and yes, even if uta is a year younger than ace and sabo, she still would call herself a big sister (especially for knowing luffy longer than the other two. shes just used to being the older one)

anyway... lets say asul au is a tjing, now consider ASUL + S as we love talking about asl+s. with uta around, sanji likely thinks that all sisters are good because shes nice to him too. and how she clearly loves her brothers too. but ofc, uta surrounded by brothers while claiming to be the big sister, makes sanji incredibly jealous about their sibling relationship. it reminds him of reiju and his brothers, how they never really got along. while asul got along really well. they fight a lot but it's never with the intention to hurt each other or make the other feel worthless.

and who am i if i dont bring up sabosan at some point LOL. (also mb that this ask is so long i just love uta sm and i love aus sooo bad <<3) uta is definitely one of the first to notice her brothers' fondness of sanji. she is fond as him as well but not the same way as them lol. she tells sanji some secrets about sabo and sanji just cannot tell if shes actually serious or not because of how mischievous her smile is. and uta absolutely teases sabo about sanji, especially when hes not around like– that little song that little kids sing when it comes to someone havinf a crush.

and luffy definitely chimes in while sabo is beet red and begging them to shut up fkldjfldj. makino and uta Looooves gossiping about sabo and sanji. makino does ask to tone down her teasing, which she does, but she can't help but push each other's buttons.

idk theres just a lot to think about if uta was raised with asl brothers and uta growing up to be a pirate :^)

THIS IS SO CUTE !!!! Honestly, Film Red never sat right with me but not exactly because of Shanks' decision of keeping Uta. I see that pretty much in character for the guy-- What I don't like is the way they rushed the ending and the way it all ended, in general. It's just obvious they wanted to do Uta's story but in a way that didn't affect the canon and it's just- Stupid. Idk.

But let's say Shanks meets Uta and spend some years together and she does consider him her father (as I see it, because in this sibling group all of them have to have daddy issues. Except Luffy. Because more than daddy issues he just. Doesn't care-) but he leaves her with Luffy because he says it will be good for her. I think she wouldn't agree with his decision and something like in the movie would happen. Where he just... Leaves. And Uta ends up hating him or at least resenting him a bit. And it's obvious he did for her and he had good intentions but she's just a kid, so she genuinely takes it personal. So, yeah, the girl stays as Luffy's older sister, basically. At least this is how I see it.

Then Sabo and Ace appear and- It's chaotic.

Imo, she's still a diva and she still loves music because it's in her blood and also, she spent some time with Shanks so she already has a bit of her personality made. But being with them makes her learn more about protecting herself and being a bit ruthless, although I think she's more of the type to ler her brothers do the dirty work and only follow them in their shenanigans if they go "You only say that because you can't do it!!" (<- Ace, definitely) and she has to prove she can be as strong as them. So she's a diva but she's a bit more impulsive and reacts in a more violent way. Especially with food too.

I think she wouldn't get along much with Ace at first because he's a mess and she's also a mess and they're really similar when it comes to being Luffy's older siblings so they wouldn't agree on most stuff. But daddy issues are a good way of bonding and I'm pretty damn sure that if Ace ever said "Should I have been born?" in front of her, she would go insane trying to make him see that everybody deserves to live.

With Sabo, though, I think they'd get along pretty well. Sabo is still chaotic but a bit calmer than Ace and he has a strong ideology that Uta would definitely share. He wants to make a statement for freedom and Uta agrees and tbh, he's a writer and she's a singer and there's no better friendship than that one.

Her relationship with Luffy is pretty much the same, except that she now acts way more as a sister and not only as a past friend. Of course. She joins them drinking too!!

Ngl, you can hate me for this but I think the events of Red could easily happen... Again... I mean... Not exactly those events but-- Uta's dream would obviously be to reach everyone with her music. To make them feel seen and loved and making them see they should live. Because after spending so much time with her brothers, she wants to sing songs for the rest of the people that feel the same way they do. She always has them in mind when she sings and she always, always, tries to make them have fun and enjoy life. I think Uta's perception of living and freedom would clash a lot with Ace's and she'd try to make him want to live through music. Same with with freedom and Sabo/Luffy.

But then Sabo dies. And Ace dies. But Sabo comes back and-- I am sorry, and I know it partially was the mushroom's fault, but she's kind of unstable mentally (who isn't in this show tbh) and it wouldn't surprise me that her blatant optimistic views would make her want to do exactly what happens in Red again. But I think this time it should be Sabo and Luffy the ones saving her and, you know, idk, maybe Shanks is there too but this isn't about him today. Whatever. She doesn't hurt anyone and it has a good ending, but it's not the point of the post--

So Sanji is there with them! Following what we've already been saying about Sanji staying with the ASL bros but now adding Uta!!

Uta would absolutely. Adore. Sanji. He's the perfect little sibling. He's cute and knows how to cook and he's literally everything that's right in this world. She complains about Luffy crying but when Sanji does so she only says it's cute and that he deserves to cry-- Uta likes cute stuff canonically and Sanji is the cutest thing, so it makes sense. Also, Sanji just assumes every woman in the world is perfect from that very second because between his mom, Reiju and now Uta he has only had good experiences with girls. He does feel kind of left out at first remembering everything that happened with the Vinsmokes, but Uta always tries to include him in every little thing!

She really likes teasing him and Sabo, though. Uta might adore Sanji but that doesn't mean she isn't a little bit mean to him. It's obvious that they like like each other because, you know, they're kids. Look at them. It's obvious. Uta knows, Luffy knows, Ace knows... Sabo and Sanji spend so much time alone and Sabo always tries to be next to him and he looks at Sanji with like, literal heart eyes.

Uta: Do you like Sanji? Sabo: Sanji? No. No. No. Sanji's just a friend... Uta: Why are your eyes shaped like hearts? Sabo: Allergies...

Uta is an artist. A singer. She's 100% a hopeless romantic. I will die on this hill. So while Ace is extremely "ughhhh" *disgusted noises* by Sanji and Sabo's flirting and Luffy couldn't care less (he just likes teasing them because it's fun to see them panicking), Uta tries HARD to get them together. They're listening to her songs? She will sing a romantic one. They're alone? She will gently push one of them closer to the other. They eat spaghetti once and she goes all the way to try to do the thing where they eat the same one so they kiss. Etc etc etc. She won't stop being a little brat about it too, teasing both of them. And it's driving Sabo crazy. Makino asks Uta about the kids because she knows the girl is as invested as her in the relationship. Funniest thing in the world.

Now I can't stop thinking about them spearating when Sabo dies, following what we said etc etc etc And Uta becomes a famous singer. She doesn't kill anybody, okay? Let's leave it on her just- Doing a huge concert. Sanji and Sabo have already reunited but please, imagine these two not dating just yet. They're in love and pining but not dating. Everyone hates it. And then Sabo joins them for the concert, ofc, and when Uta sees them again (and sees Sabo is alive?? Because what the fuck why didn't they tell her???) one of the first thing she says is "Okay, okay... So you two are... You know?" and they don't understand what she's saying but literally all the crew is like "They're still pining. Please. It's awful". Girl makes it everyone's problem so she does this kiss cam thing to get them together finally. Like I said, good ending.

Whumptober Day 1

Uta

Lmao so we're starting off with Uta this year because I noticed October 1st is her birthday, and what better way to celebrate than to give her the first Whumpday hororororororo TW: Mention of destruction, abandonment, guilt of unconscious criminal actions, and Uta considering herself a monster

For as long as she could remember Shanks and his crew had been there for her.

Until that fateful day, the music island had been destroyed.

With the pirates being the only survivors, they fled the scene with her before the Marines arrived. Uta slept in Shanks' arms, unaware of what they were discussing.

"What do we do?" Roux asked pushing the plate of food away from him. "If the Marines found out she was the one behind this..."

The members worriedly glanced at Uta who clung onto Shanks' arm. Heavy silence only fueled the anxiety clawing in their minds.

"She might have a higher bounty than the Devil of Ohara." Hongo set the stack of bounties he had been looking through on the table.

"It's not right for kids to have bounties," Yasopp said, his arms folded and staring at the ground.

"She would've gotten a bounty eventually," Limejuice reminded the group. "We're pirates, and marines don't discriminate who to make an outlaw."

"Well, we didn't expect it this soon."

"It'll be dangerous if she stays with us."

"We can't just drop her off and leave her behind."

The last statement ceased the others from conversing further. Shanks, who had been quietly looking at his daughter, at last spoke up, "Let's head to Dawn Island."

Luffy waved goodbye to the pirates, shouting he'll meet them again someday with his own crew, when a thought wormed it's way into his mind. He dropped his arms and scratched his head in search of his memory. Did he say bye to Uta? She didn't talk to him as the crew was packing up to leave, which was weird. Uta would've been right by Shanks, teasing him before Red Hair gave the strawhat to the boy. Maybe she was already on the ship sleeping, her devil fruit did take up a lot of her energy. Luffy shrugged it off and walked back to Makino's bar.

"Makino, can I have some juice?" Luffy requested as he climbed onto a stool in front of the bar.

"Of course, Luffy." She smiled and got out a glass.

Luffy happily waited, kicking his legs back and forth, when he heard a girlish yawn behind him. He spun around, eyes going wide. "Uta?! What are you doing here!?"

"Hmm?" Uta shot him a confused look as she rubbed her eyes. "Why wouldn't I come here? I'm hungry, I want breakfast."

"Luffy-" Makino tried to explain the situation but Luffy opened his mouth first.

"BUT SHANKS LEFT! I THOUGHT YOU WERE WITH THEM!"

"He wHAT?!" Uta snapped awake not processing what he just said.

"Shanks and his crew left earlier this morning, why aren't you with them?"

Uta's face contorted to one of horror and she dashed out of the bar, unable to hear Makino calling out to her. Her little legs carried her to the docks, she glanced around in devastation at the empty port.

They left her.

They actually left her.

She thought the conversation she overheard was a bad dream. They wouldn't abandon her, right? They loved her, she loved them. So why? Why did they leave her here?

Just as the question appeared in her mind, a brief memory from Elegia's destruction popped up and for now her questions stopped. She bawled her fist as rain fell onto the ground in front of her. Luffy ran up to the docks, Uta wiped away the rain before turning to the boy wearing her dad's strawhat.

"Did-" she paused to get a hold of her emotions. "Did he say if he was coming back?"

"No, he said they won't be returning," Luffy bluntly said but quickly scrambled to fix it. "But- uh- I'm sure they'll come back for you. I mean- we can get Makino to call them and have them pick you up-"

"Don't bother." Uta brushed past him. "He's not going to come back."

Just like her world shattered. Her family, that she could fall back on, disappeared. All that remained were gaps that needed to be filled with answers explaining why they would leave her, and she had a vague idea of what they were.

As the gaps filled with her thoughts of the music island's destruction, a seed planted itself in the back of her mind.

'Monster.'

Technically. . . In terms of fanfictions, I have:

Speak Up, Boys! (I have all chapters of the fic drafted by the way, with titles and musics and stuff!)

Feral Twins (a.k.a what if after the first incident on Elegia, Garp stumbled upon Uta while he was trying to find Shanks and yell at him for corrupting his grandson into piracy? He brings her back on Dawn, where he grabs Luffy, and then attempts to train them as Marine by taking them with him. But the two are equally stubborn about Not Being Marines Ever, so after a year or so he drops them both at Dadan's place, where they are going to meet the bandits, but also Ace and Sabo. Basically, Dadan now has two sets of Feral Twins, who keeps on fighting... Till they team up and make her life even better worse.)

Shanks' & Buggy's Adventures (I need a better title lol But I really really really love this one too! This is a "What if Shanks had run after Buggy at the end of Roger's execution and properly talked things out with him" AU. Cue them being idiot teens, sticking together as co-captains on the same ratty little boat, going on adventures in the four blues, then on the Grand Line. . . But yall know me, that would also involve lots of character study, angst/comfort, and a few fun (tragic) headcanons till they reach adulthood)

LUFFY 🥲🥹🩷

Writing him is HILARIOUS. I get to go wild, use weird ass metaphors, and let him take the initiative in the narrative because he's always running wild and having 1001 thoughts at once, though his brain will only notice the most crazy ones!

But at the same time... HE IS ALWAYS RUNNING WILD 😭💦 So writing his chapters in a way that makes sense, while giving clues about what IS going on even when HE isn't registering it, AND making sure I stay as close to his character as possible??? Man that is TOUGH ― yet so so so rewarding. 🥲🫶

Red twin AU where...

My friend told me how similar our latest antagonist and protagonist were. sooo

AU TIMEEE

RED TWIN AU where Luffy and Uta were twins separated from birth! Uta being the more healthier twin and the one that had been taken whilst Luffy was left to die alone due to his health problems as a baby.

Dragon decides to take him in because duh, who could leave such a poor thing? (No he didn't get attached *proceeds to give random child his name*) Although the Revolutionary quickly realized his new baby wasn't safe with him either and then he gives him to Garp who was shocked to have yet another grandson. (Dragon noticed that the pendant that the child had was the only thing that kept him alive and it altered the baby's appearance greatly. More similar to the Monkey D men looked like)

Then Luffy and Uta's short reunion and bonding time (not that they knew they were twins) as the Red-haired crew marked Dawn island as their base. (Uta always wanted to wear the pendant that Luffy wore, but he always declined and said it was from his dad.)

Then they leave.

A few years later, Luffy grows up. He meets Ace, he meets Sabo and finds out about his missing twin. (Luffy has a keen connection to music, sure Uta nurtured it, but Luffy always danced like he fought. He just thinks dancing is just graceful fighting. and Songs were just fancy fight chants.)

Meanwhile in Elegia, Uta rots in loneliness and guilt as not only she had destroyed her foster parent's kingdom; she had left her only blood relative, her own baby brother.

Luffy almost gave himself and his crew a panic attack after he had taken off his pendant for the first time in his life. he looked WAY WAY DIFFERENT!!

Sure he was still tan but his eyes were purple, his hair were two completely different colors! His face had a different shape and his voice was different to boot! (His hair reminds him of Uta's, but the white part is on the left side and the red part is on the right side instead of vice versa.)

Luffy was just glad that his scar stayed the same.

“U-T-A! U-T-A! U-T-A!”

The crowds cheered, their deafening voices echoing in the backstage and shaking the whole room. The music hadn't even started and yet, the vibrations were already resonating through Uta’s body, making her heartbeat speed up as she listened to the excitement just outside.

Soon, she would be standing on the stage, facing all those people, seeing them directly for the first time; it was exciting… yet terrifying at the same time. It had been so long since she had performed in front of so many people.

Eleven years? Twelve? She wasn’t even sure anymore.

But now, she would get to do so as much as she wanted to—as much as her fans wanted her to. She loved them enough to push herself beyond her limits. To protect them, to help them escape this rotten world for just a moment longer.

Uta loved Dawn Island. Out of all the temporary bases the Red Hair Pirates have made over the years, this one was definitely her favourite. It was calm, the shore was pretty, the Foosha Village was almost picturesque with its windmills and Mt. Corvo behind it, and she loved the kind tavern owner Makino. Surprisingly, the villagers were unexpectedly welcoming of the big bad pirates as well, throwing parties for them after every raid they made—to be fair, it was probably in part thanks to Shanks always giving them a part of the treasure ‘because he’s nice like that’.

Uta preferred to call it bribery but as long as it allowed them to stay there in peace, she supposed the name didn’t really matter.

The only bad part was—

“Shanks!! Let me join your crew!!”

—this brat.

“Luffy, how many times do we have to tell you no?” Uta asked, not even bothering to suppress the annoyance in her tone.

Luffy paused where he was tugging at Shanks’ arm to try and get him to pay attention; instead, he slowly turned to look at Uta. “As if I’d listen to a kid like you!” he announced, then stuck his tongue out at her.

Uta took a deep breath, counting to five before she hissed, “I don’t want to be called a kid by a baby.”

“You’re just two years older than me!” Luffy cried. Then, finally, he let go of Shanks’ arm to jump down to the floor and stride over to stand next to Uta.

Or below her, considering how tall the bar stool she was sitting on was compared to his short, child’s body.

“Yes. And that’s exactly why you are more of a baby than me,” Uta noted, her lips curling into a smirk as she looked down at Luffy. “And why you’ve lost to me 347 times.”

Luffy puffed up. “I’m the one who beat you 347 times!! Even though you keep cheating!”

“I’m a pirate. There’s no such thing as cheating.” Uta shrugged and this time, it was her turn to grin as she raised both her hands up to her face, wiggling her fingers at Luffy. “There he goes! Sore loser.”

“Uta~,” Luffy whined, glaring at her with a huge pout on his lips. 

“Uta, Luffy. Don’t fight,” Makino tried to placate them but to no avail.

Luffy put one hand on his hip, pointing at Uta with the other. “Fine! I challenge you to a match!”

“So you can lose again? Sure,” Uta said casually before she easily jumped off her stool. “What are the rules?”

Luffy crossed his arms over his chest and closed his eyes as he hummed, his face twisting into a deep frown as he thought hard. Uta could swear there was steam rising from his head  and she had to bite her cheek to keep herself from giggling at the sight.

Finally, Luffy’s eyes snapped open and his face split into a wide smile. “We’ll have a singing contest!”

Uta blinked. Did he really just—

“Is that a joke?!” Uta cried with wide eyes, staring at Luffy as if he just spoke the words that would bring down the sun upon them and destroy the world.

Actually, he might as well have.

“Shanks, did you let him drink your sake?! Or did he go insane all by himself?!” Uta accused, pointing at Luffy while she turned to her captain to demand answers.

Shanks, however, only laughed. “I can’t wait! Dibs on first row seats!”

“Hey, boss! No fair!” Roux called from the back of the tavern.

Uta clicked her tongue. “You really want him to burst your eardrums from up close?” she scoffed before turning back to Luffy. He was still standing there, positively beaming at her with a proud look in his eyes and Uta sighed. “You do realise I'm the Red Hair Pirates’ musician, right?” she asked, just to make sure Luffy didn’t hit his head and lose his memory or… something. Because this was nothing short of stupid, even for him.

“Yeah!” The idiot nodded with that annoying bright grin. “Are you scared, Uta?”

“Excuse me?” Uta’s eyebrows shot up. “You’re on, you brat.”

Taking that as a cue, the Red Hair Pirates got up as one, clearing the tavern of chairs and tables to create Uta’s very own stage. Allowing her to spread her wings, to make her stage into whatever she wished. To show everyone her world, painting the floor, walls, and ceiling with her words, building props with musical notes—creating a world for herself… and for everyone she loved.

And Uta… sang.

She sang, the words flowing out of her mouth, her chest, her heart. She sang, letting the music envelop her, to dance around her as she commanded. She sang, guiding everyone around her to join her in her world. The stage was hers and she was the stage; they were one, always would be, and she hoped that one day, she could lead everyone to this place, to show them how beautiful the world inside her songs could be.

She sang until she felt the exhaustion pulling on her and her eyelids started feeling heavy. She wanted to go on but since this was a contest… a little taste was enough to show how superior she was to—it wasn’t even enough to call Luffy an amateur. A joke, more like.

As the last note faded out and the song came to a close, Uta closed her eyes momentarily, taking a deep breath before she looked around herself to take in the faces of everyone who had watched her performance. A wide smile pulled on her lips at the sight of everyone’s dazed expressions turning into ones of excitement as they cheered loudly, a round of applause soon erupting around the tavern.

Uta giggled to herself, spreading her arms wide as she spinned around before bowing to everyone deeply.

However, the calls for an encore were cut short when Luffy jumped up, his fists raised up in the air, and he called, “My turn now!!”

Rolling her eyes, Uta backed away from the centre of the tavern to make room for the boy who was already running over to take her place, undescribable excitement in his impossibly bright grin. He took the stage and inhaled deeply.

“The islands~ in the south~ are warm~”

“Oh god,” Uta let out immediately, at the same time as her hands flew up to cover her ears and protect her from the horribly off-key screeching.

“Heads all a-swoon-swoon~”

“Make him stop!” she cried desperately.

Unfortunately, he didn’t stop as the other Red Hair Pirates simply laughed and clapped, some even slapping their knees in a fit of hysterics. Uta had no idea how they could find this… atrocity funny but she sure as hell wasn’t going to stay to try and understand it.

“They’re all fools~!”

Hands still on her ears, she bolted out of her chair and out of the tavern, running far enough to get out of earshot—and even then, she could do nothing but drop to her knees, her hands never falling to her sides; she just continued clutching at her head in a vain attempt to get rid of the dreadful echo ringing in her brain.

It was only minutes later that a large, comforting hand came to rest on her shoulder and Benn Beckman’s deep, soothing voice asked, “You okay?”

“No,” Uta replied, her fingers curling in to grab onto her two-coloured hair.

“I suppose Luffy won in a way, huh?” Benn said, barely suppressed laughter in his voice.

Uta only groaned and gripped her hair tighter.

“Uta, come on! You’re gonna get lost!” Luffy called triumphantly as he charged forward, sprinting through the forest behind Foosha Village.

“Excuse me?!” Uta cried. How dare this brat suggest she’d get lost?

Gritting her teeth, Uta picked up speed. It didn't take her long to catch up to Luffy; she threw a smirk at him as she overtook him, taking his place in the lead. “Right back at you! See if you can catch me before I get to the cliff!”

“Loser has to tell everyone the winner is a better pirate!” Luffy announced.

“Sounds good to me!” Uta agreed, a new wave of determination coursing through her veins.

As she weaved her way through the trees, she stopped paying attention to her surroundings. She simply focused on her goal and on her feet, dancing over the roots and rocks as to avoid tripping and giving Luffy an advantage. She felt light, almost as if she was flying, the swishing of the wind around her headphones only enhancing the impression. A grin was pulling on her lips and she almost startled; was she… actually having fun? With Luffy?

“Uta!!”

At the alarmed shout of her name, Uta’s eyes snapped up from the ground only for her to come face to face with a man—a tall, muscular man, dirty and ugly, but carrying more weapons than any of the Red Hair Pirates ever did. Because none of them are weak enough to need ten guns and twenty knives, her mind readily supplied… but that didn’t change the fact she was 9 years old, unarmed beyond her voice with no one but Luffy to help her and she wasn’t stupid enough to think they stood a chance.

She froze, her heartbeat speeding up as her eyes went wide while she stared at the man, who she could only assume was a mountain bandit. He was staring back at her without moving—obviously just as surprised to run into two little kids as they were to run into him—and Uta prayed he would let them leave without a fuss. After all, they had nothing but their clothes on them, there was nothing to gain.

But of course, Luffy, the idiot, had to go and throw that chance out the window himself. “What do you want, bandit?!” he shouted at the man in a shaky voice. “Leave Uta alone or I’ll beat you up!!”

If Uta wasn’t so scared, she’d have groaned and face-palmed but as it was she could barely just force herself out of her stupor to move. She gulped loudly before she took a deep breath—and bolted, crossing the small distance that separated her from Luffy to catch his wrist in a vice grip.

“Run!!” she yelled while she yanked on his arm.

They didn’t make it further than a few paces before they noticed something charging at them and Uta threw herself to the side, dragging Luffy with her; just in time to avoid being run into the ground by two… children?

“Sabo, hurry up or the hag will catch us!” a boy’s voice shouted impatiently.

“I know,” another boy replied just as he slid on the ground right by Uta, missing her by apparently carefully calculated inches. “Wait, Ace! Bandit ahead!”

“Oh, you two—! I’m taking you to boss Higuma for what you did last time!” the bandit Uta and Luffy had been running from growled as he pulled one of his larger guns from behind his belt, taking aim.

And then, Uta could only watch with wide eyes as the two boys—neither much older than herself—exchanged a single glance before they moved in perfect sync, using the pipes in their hands to knock the giant man to the ground, rendering him unconscious and swiping a few knives on their way. They made it seem so easy that Uta felt like her jaw had hit the floor. She would have expected no less from her family but two young boys like this… It was almost enchanting.

“Out of the way, asshole,” the dark-haired one muttered before he took off again.

On the other hand, the blond stopped for a moment, a confident, easy smile on his lips as he glanced at the bandit… then at Luffy and Uta.

Before either of them could say or do anything, an angry female voice carried over to them. “Ace!! Get back here you shitty little brat!!”

Somehow, the boy’s smile only widened. “See ya!” he called… and then he was gone, leaving Uta to wonder to whom exactly the words were addressed.

Uta and Luffy sat there in stunned silence for a few more minutes as they gathered themselves enough to finally run away before the bandit woke up and decided he’d take his anger out on them.

By the time they made it to the shore, neither Uta nor Luffy remembered there was a race—nevermind what they were racing over. They were just glad to be out of the forest, gasping for breath, laughter on their lips from the relief that washed over them as soon as the sea came into view.

“I could have beat him too,” Luffy said defiantly after a long while of them simply lying on the grass.

Uta rolled her eyes. “Sure you could.”

“Just you watch! One day, I will be the strongest thing on this island—no, in this sea!” Luffy announced, and Uta could basically hear the pout on his lips.

With a small huff, Uta’s lips curled into a crooked smile. “And what then, Mr Strongest?”

Luffy hummed. “Then I'll become a pirate and leave this island and become the strongest!”

“Weren’t you trying to leave with us?” Uta asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yeah, that’s what I was saying,” Luffy announced as if it were obvious and Uta…

Uta couldn’t fight back the laugh that bubbled out of her chest.

This brat just cowered and almost cried in the face of one bandit and he was already talking about becoming the strongest in the East Blue before the Red Hair Pirates left? How cute… and hilarious. How long did he think that was going to take? A week? A month? It wasn’t like they were going to stick around for ten years or more.

Suddenly, Uta stopped laughing.

They were going to leave this island for good soon, weren’t they? She should be happy about finally being rid of Luffy… But somehow…

She couldn’t even remember what life was like without his annoying laughter and stupid bright grins and cries of ‘Shanks! Lemme onto the ship!! I wanna be a pirate!!’

…actually, how did she even for a second think she was going to miss him?

“You really are a kid,” Uta said instead of voicing her thoughts.

“Hey!” Luffy cried immediately, rising on his elbows to glare down at Uta, who only stared back at him impassively until Luffy’s face twisted in frustration over her lack of reaction and he threw himself back to the ground next to her. “What about you? Don’t you want to beat all the stupid bandits up?”

“I’m a musician,” Uta replied simply. “I will use my voice, not violence like a stupid monkey.”

“Okay but is your voice going to protect you or the people you love when someone comes at you with a gun?” Luffy asked with genuine confusion.

Uta laughed, the sound a happy chime around them. She could almost see the musical notes dancing in the air. “Music is my power. I can bring a new genesis with my voice and I don’t need any help. No bandits can stand up to me.”

“And yet you ran away screaming,” Luffy piped up.

“Hey!”

Uta smiled at the memory; it had been so many years and yet, she could still see the scene as if it were yesterday. She wondered—where was Luffy now? Was he still on Dawn Island? She would bet he really was the strongest one there by now.

She shook her head, trying to get rid of her thoughts. It wouldn’t do to get nostalgic now. She had a job to do, songs to sing, fans to meet. A world to change. She couldn’t get lost in the memories of her carefree childhood and long for the simpler, easier times when she had not a single worry in the world.

Taking a deep breath, Uta closed her eyes, ignoring the painful pang next to her heart.

Luffy, are you watching? Though it doesn’t really matter. Not anymore.

With a final, slow exhale, Uta opened her eyes and took a step forward, one last whisper lingering in the backstage before her singing voice drowned it out.

“A new genesis is the future.”

Since you stated that luffy stays around the thousand sunny I'd imagine the adventures happening around different islands with luffy always waiting at the docks (like Mari does with the picnic) as for the islands since the ASL brothers never left dawn Island (as far as I know) they relied on books sabo found or stories from either garp or some passing pirates' stories to create their own adventure islands. And as much as I'd love to have yamato as kel, uta as Aubrey and law as hero (in one of the other omori related posts) I feel like they'd be more like enemies to the AS brothers (they're fighting over who gets luffy for themselves) each character would have their own level instead with "Musica Island" "Dragon's den" (yamato's pretty chill) and lastly the "kori labs" (ice labs) for law.

I still have a lot more to talk about but I'mma stop for now.

Hebns I really like that idea!!! I think it would be a really fun Idea! its an ideal perfect adventure that Ace could dream of! Though I'd say the au does take place in a somewhat modern-ish au setting. They do still live in Foosha Village but I do plan for it to be like a place somewhere rural... Since Ace and Sabo did "accidentally" frame Luffy's death as a gruesome murder.. I do like the idea of the ASL brothers skimming through fantasy books and hearing stories from their grandpa though! It was a thought of that from the start when making this au! the thought of the brothers reading comic books and listening to pirate stories and making a fun pirate adventure makes sense for them to do in a modern-like setting! Also knowing Ace's nature the headspace would probably be extreme and violent with the adventure... My condolences to the Headspace Sabos that get sent to Blackspace. I hope he gets mauled by dogs down there (Affectionate)

Uta Barth’s two part exhibition at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is a fascinating look at the artist’s work.  It includes the New York debut of her most recent piece, …from dawn to dusk, a nearly 360-degree installation of images commissioned by the J. Paul Getty Trust.

From the press release-

Barth’s expansive 2022 series … from dawn to dusk focuses on the intersection of Southern California light with the architecture of the Getty Center. It traces the changing light at one location of the Richard Meier built campus, for the period of one year. The location was photographed every five minutes, from dawn to dusk, on two days each month, for the entirety of the year. Made with a GigaPan, over 64,000 images were captured and a Timelapse video sequence now shows the progression of this movement of light. As the view repeats from panel to panel, there are subtle changes in light as well as more dramatic blurring and color shifts, which invoke inverted optical afterimages and other visual phenomena that occur when staring at a fixed point for a prolonged period of time. Presented as twelve consecutive single views, the video is embedded among the still images of the installation, and it comes as a surprise to discover what one first assumes to be a still photograph to actually be the moving summation of the show.

In the upstairs galleries, Elizabeth Smith’s selection of work reveals the foundations of the artist’s renowned and influential practice, as well as the trajectory that led to the explorations found in …from dawn to dusk. Elizabeth Smith shared her thoughts on Barth’s practice as she approached this exhibition:

It’s been almost thirty years since I worked with Uta Barth to present her first solo museum show at MOCA in 1995. In relation to her newest project, the gallery’s invitation to select some key examples from both her early series and subsequent ones has offered a welcome opportunity to reengage with and consider the full trajectory of her work. From her earliest to her most recent photographs, Barth’s practice has centered on a nuanced investigation of visual experience, free from narrative. Light, color, the passage of time, and the shifting nature of the process of vision through bodily experience are the ongoing subjects of her resonant images, probed in various ways over decades.

Throughout her career, Uta Barth has made visual perception the subject of her work. Regarded for her “empty” images that reference painterly abstraction, the artist carefully renders blurred backgrounds, cropped frames and the natural qualities of light to capture incidental and fleeting moments, those which exist almost exclusively within our periphery. With a deliberate disregard for both the conventional photographic subject and the point-and-shoot role of the camera, Barth’s work delicately deconstructs conventions of visual representation by calling our attention to the limits of the human eye.

As Leah Ollman writes in her recent Los Angeles Times profile of the artist,

From her earliest years as an artist, Barth’s attention has been drawn to the eye’s behavior: what attracts it, what makes it stay, what causes it to double back, what generates after-images and optical fatigue. Learning to photograph was, for her, a way of learning to see.
