so uh today I got to visit the USS Lexington and
THEY HAD THE PLANE USED IN TOP GUN
NOT JUST A F-14 TOMCAT BUT THE ACTUAL PLANE USED IN THE MOVIE WITH MAVERICK AND GOOSE'S NAMES ON THE SIDE
I freaked out when I saw it.
On a semi unrelated note, it's really nice on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Windy, chilly, I loved it. Mainly because the inside of the ship was so fucking hot.
I also got to see a scale model of the USS Hornet, the aircraft carrier used in the Doolittle Raid. Read the NHHT book on it and became very fascinated.
sorry if it seems like I'm bragging just wanted to share my excitement

On October 3, 1925, Lexington (CV-2) was launched at the Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Massachusetts. She was sponsored and christened by Mrs. Theodore D. Robinson, wife of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
"At the time she was the longest vessel in the world, the biggest ship ever constructed in this country and the fastest vessel afloat (destroyers excepted)."

A bit late, but yesterday was the anniversary of the loss of the USS Lexington. Heavily damaged during the battle of the Coral Sea, the Lexington was scuttled by the US Navy on May 8, 1942.
The art here is an old piece that I did a while back but forgot to post.

Page 37. ---- U.S. ACE BAGS SIX ENEMY BOMBERS IN PACIFIC ENGAGEMENT --- Vicious anti-aircraft fire from protecting naval vessels fills the sky marks where a Jap plane burns. After being disabled by a U.S. flier, above a United States aircraft carrier "somewhere in the Pacific," as a Lieut. Edward O'Hare, it attempted a suicide dive on the carrier, but heavy Japanese bomber raid is driven off. Sixteen out of 18 of the was stopped short of 200 yards away by concentrated anti-aircraft fire. attacking bombers were destroyed. The black smudge on the horizon O'Hare is credited with destroying six of the 18 planes shot down.
