source on Flint?
The dirt.

Okay, joke answer aside, I'll put the source under the cut...
I'm going to assume that you're likely referring to the fun fact tidbit that I posted yesterday about Flint originally intended to be involved in the Jealous Bass boss fight.
The Cutting Room Floor has an archive of stuff that was cut from Mother 3 but still exists as data within the game. If you scroll down to Flint, you'll see that he has unused sprites for dodging the train, which is an event that happens in chapter 4.
And if you put Flint into your party as the second party member in debug mode then go to the train, he will dodge the train with that sprite animation. Compare that to Claus, who when programmed to be the second party member, does dodge the train like intended (and Boney, as the third party member, does not) but does not display the proper animation for this motion, we can see that while the behavior of jumping out of the way is programmed into the second party member, they only have the proper sprite for the scene if they're supposed to be there. This tells us that Flint was supposed to be involved in Chapter 4, at least up until the train, but was cut late into development. The only thing that stops Flint from jumping out of the way is the fact that he isn't there.
We also have a cut animation of what appears to be Flint clinging onto the airship, which is what Lucas and the rest of his party does at the end of chapter 5. Now, can I say with absolute certainty that this is what this animation is intended for? No, because I wasn't on the development team. But considering how closely that sprite of Flint resembles the rest of the party in that scene:
And how close Chapters 4 and 5 are to each other, as well as how the Spaceworld (1999) Earthbound 64 trailer* (apologies for the blurriness, but TCRF does have a clearer image of this scene on their website) does show Flint, along with Lucas, Claus, Duster, and Boney clinging to an airship, it's easy to deduce that's it's highly likely that Flint was intended to be in the party at least up until the party separation at the end of Chapter 5.
Also, so no one could say that that animation of Flint was actually supposed to be for Chapter 7 when Lucas and company were clinging onto the bird cage, here's a screenshot of that. You can see that if Flint was involved here, his animation would've had him hanging on from the wrong direction (apologies for the Lucas mooning).
[Also as a small aside: while not exactly evidence on its own but something worth pointing out, there is a notable difficulty spike in Chapter 4 when there's only Lucas and Boney in the party. The enemies at this point in the game the can wipe your party quite easily if you're not careful, and I always struggled against them even in the standard mode and I'm sure I'm not the only person who experienced this (while the game tells you not to mess with the Cattlesnakes, there's nothing to stop the Horsantulas and Ostrelephants from running right at you and initiating a battle). Having a heavy hitter in your party like Flint would've made the chimeras outside of Club Titiboo as well as the Jealous Bass easier. Again though, I'm not going to use my experiences as evidence because it could just be that I'm not good at the game.]
So, we have a timeframe that says that Flint was supposed to be in the party from around the beginning of Chapter 4 to at least the end of Chapter 5, which is well within the timeframe that the Jealous Bass boss fight occurs. Now, of course, just because there's evidence that Flint was supposed to be in the party for Chapters 4 and 5 doesn't mean that he would've been involved in the Jealous Bass boss fight with a 100% certainty. Flint could've been rendered incapable of participating in the attic dungeon (and, subsequently, that fight) for one reason or another. Maybe he gets locked in the bathroom while showering? Who knows? While it would've been an odd story direction, I wasn't the one making those sorts of decisions, so I can't say with absolute unshakable faith that he was going to be there. And for that, I apologize. I have changed the wording of that post a bit so it's a bit more ambiguous. There's nothing I can do for versions that have been reblogged unfortunately, but at least the base post reflects that. But there's at least enough evidence to prove that this is likely what was intended to happen.
* While I do not consider Earthbound 64 and Mother 3 the same games, it's undeniable that Earthbound 64 did lay the grounds for the direction that Mother 3 went in. If the only piece of evidence I had for Flint clinging to the airship was from that trailer alone, I would not have used it.
#(i was also going to bring up the fact that Flint can also equip more stick items than just the ones that appear in chapter 1#barring 2/3 of them (which were likely the baseball bat(s) and maybe the mythical stick if memory serves) but i couldn't access the debug#menu. i spent hours trying just messing around on my emulator to try to access that but i couldn't so i didn't want to bring it up as#evidence when i couldn't prove it myself. it is interesting though how flint can equip sticks that he wouldn't have had access to#during chapter 1. if it was just a matter of all of them being considered stick-like items then why is it that flint is barred from#using 2/3 of them that lucas can use?#eh. either way it feels like flint was supposed to be more present in the story than he was with all the stuff they had for him#that didn't get used. and while I'm fine with the direction that the story went in i wonder how his presence would've shaped the story... đ¤#good on you for asking though anon. it's very easy to just make up stuff on the internet and try to pass it off as true.#after all I've been hearing rumors for years that m3 was supposed to be 12 chapters long with a morality system and multiple endings#and as cool as that all sounds they're just that: rumors)#i typed this all up on mobile so let me know if any of the links aren't working or whatnot and I'll try to fix them

So what are Will's flaws?
Is Will totally perfect in every way? Is he a jealous saboteur? Or a secret third option... neither. Let's discuss Will's flaws and nuances!
1. Emotional suppression
Will avoids his problems. He hates talking about both his emotional and physical danger because he doesn't want to be treated differently. From a young age, he was taught by Lonnie that he shouldn't express his emotions because that makes him "sensitive" and "weak." So now he likes to hide.
This emotional suppression causes his feelings to worsen over time. Once he finally lets it out, he explodes. Instead of healthy conversations, he says and does things that he'll probably regret later. He blows up at Mike, he yells at Jonathan, he destroys Castle Byers, he shows his hand (what about us?)
Will's avoidance doesn't only have consequences on him, but others. If he had told someone he was feeling the Mind Flayer earlier, they might've been able to save some of the Flayed. But he couldn't tell someone because that puts him in a place of emotional vulnerability. That's exactly why he waited until after he fought with the boys to mention the supernatural. He traded one vulnerable situation for another, allowing him to avoid opening up about his true feelings. It was a distraction.
This also doesn't let others to heal from their altercations. Both Lucas and Mike try to apologize to Will, but he brushes them off. Will thinks he doesn't deserve consideration. The walls he puts up forces others to hold onto their own guilt, leaving a sore spot in their relationship. We can see this soreness in Will and Mike's relationship in s4. They never healed from the rain fight. Well... not that Mike tried to apologize after the Mind Flayer debacle. Again, distraction on Will's part.
Willâs inability to handle change is also due to him bottling up his feelings. His trauma and suppression makes him stuck in the past. He doesnât let himself move through each day where these emotions would be felt.
It's interesting how Will is deemed the emotional one when his sensitivity is actually a result of him keeping his emotions in. Once that dam is opened, it's hard for him to stop. He breaks, just as he fears.
2. Self-hatred
And all that emotional suppression leads to Will internalizing other people's view of him. Will's self-hatred stems from bullying and his father's abuse. He thinks he's to blame, that he's a mistake. As more people distance themselves from Will, he believes there's something wrong with him.
When he thinks he deserves mistreatment, his relationships crumble more. They're unable to reconcile. True forgiveness can't be achieved if he doesn't think he should be apologized to in the first place.
Will's hatred is the reason why he tried to sacrifice himself in s2 to save his friends. He doesn't think he deserves to be saved. This makes him an easy target for Vecna. It's very likely that Will's self-hatred will factor into his upcoming supernatural plot.
The more Will hates himself, the more he hides, the more he suppresses his emotions.
3. People pleaser
If Will is anything, he's a people pleaser. He's selfless. So much so that this is the first thing we find out about him. While admirable, it actually leads to more bad than good. His people pleasing tendency goes hand in hand with his emotional suppression. Will doesn't like to take up space and inconvenience other people.
Will's never ending effort to please others leads to him making assumptions. Wrong assumptions. Whether it be letting Max join them on Halloween or pushing Mike to give a love confession, Will tries his best to use his mediator role to give people what they want.
But he doesn't know what they want, does he? Will wanted to make Dustin and Lucas happy, but this created a rift with Mike. He thought Mike was itching to profess his love for El, but that wasnât what either of them needed. In an attempt to help, he's making it worse.
He must be successful sometimes, though, because there's an expectation from his friends that he'll fulfill their needs at the flick of a wand. This vacancy from Will makes him a pushover. They think they can make fun of him and he'll just take it because that's what he does. When Will finally stands up for himself, they're shocked. That's out of character for him. It's like they want to say: âWhy isn't he letting us be mean to him? :(â
Mike even expected Will to tell him that his own girlfriend was being bullied. Will's people pleasing explodes in his face. So now when he's unable to read their needs and fix it for them, he's to blame. Will takes on the weight of their problems too much. While it's good that they rely on him, there shouldn't be pressure for him to judge their every whim. But it's not exactly their fault because Will set the stage for this behavior.
Weirdly, Will's need to please others is the reason why he didn't call Mike. He thought Mike wanted nothing to do with him, so he didn't reach out. There he goes assuming things again! But Will was there, waiting for the rare occasion where Mike did want him. He went so far right that he ended up left.
Will's behavior towards El is also an instance of wrong assumptions. Will didn't like being treated differently in s2, so he assumed El would feel the same way. He used his own experiences to inform how he should treat others. Babying El would make her feel more ostracized. Instead, he offered emotional comfort, similar to the comfort he received, after the bullying. This doesn't really help her because she doesn't have the same emotional mechanics as Will.
So Will assumes things, pushes his own wants down, and lets people walk all over him all in the name of being pleasant.
4. Freeze, fly, fight. In that order!
When Will is scared, he freezes. This flaw is so significant that they talked about it textually multiple times. I'm not sure I would consider it a flaw since it has saved him more than it's harmed him, though.
The few times Will has decided to fight instead of freeze, he was kidnapped and possessed. Confrontation isn't an option for him. His body believes he'll be put directly in danger if he does anything but freeze/fly. Fight is only used as a last resort.
It only really enters flaw territory when it's an inconvenience. He froze during the sauna test, when El was being bullied, and when he should've shot the creature in the shed. Will is unable to help himself and others when he's scared.
When he snaps out of it, he cries and feels guilty for being so hesitant. He wishes he could do more but he can't. This wraps back around to his self-hatred.
5. Jealousy
When his best friend of 10 years that he's in love with starts to ditch him for some random girl, it's not shocking that there would be some jealousy! Will is the silent jealous type. His jealousy doesn't really manifest into resentment or outward action against the other person. Unlike a certain someone...
Will only shows it through rolling eyes, a snarky comment here or there, or an outburst at his most emotionally vulnerable. I mean, if Will really wanted to see El crash and burn, he could've kept his mouth shut the entire Rink-O-Mania day. Or he could've ignored her in the courtyard as she picks up the pieces of her project. But he didn't.
The worst we've seen Will's jealousy was during the rain fight. He called El stupid. There's no beating around the bush, he was in the wrong for that. But this came out of Will because his emotions were at an all time high. Why? Emotional suppression!
A lot of Will's snarky comments towards El are out of genuine confusion. He doesn't understand how El can have exactly what he wants, but she's willing to ruin it by lying. Unfortunately, he later learns that exact lesson. He's envious that she can do what Mike hates without major repercussions, while he's somehow blamed for her lies. And why does he get blamed? People pleaser expectations!
Will waited until a quiet moment to inform El of her mistakes. Will's goal isn't to humiliate El. He doesn't let his jealousy lead to resentment. Instead, he tried to (snarkily) lead her to make better decisions because it's not fair! It's not fair that she can have it all without working for it!
And now we're back at self-hatred. Some of his jealous moments make it bubble back up. He bends his painting, something he put his blood, sweat, and tears into, because he isn't enough for them. Their ideal day is without him. Will's art is an extension of himself. He's aiming his anger back at himself by hurting his art.
All of his flaws connect back to his low self-esteem in some way. This is why it's important for Will to receive and accept love in his life. A big part of his arc is self acceptance.
So there it is in all its glory! All of Will's main flaws in one post. What did we learn? Will suppresses his emotions, hates himself, pleases others to a fault, freezes, and is green with envy. And he wouldn't be Will without 'em!

Love Type (Tokyo Debunker Ghouls)
hey me again i said id be back quickly and i did mean that.
this will have been queued for an hour at least by the time u see it. rn as i type this im debating using the taglist. i think ill use it. sorry 4 so many tags in a day, i bet ur sick of me
anyways! i had this idea while i was writing the perv!sho x reader thing. i thought about the differences between the ghouls and how they all love differently. at first i wasn't gonna post this, but then my brain wouldn't stop thinking about it so now this exists. its not meant 2 be a useful organization tool 4 the ghouls it's just something i had a little bit of fun with.
note that not every single ghoul is going 2 match the category he was put in exactly. for example, ghouls like luca, yuri, romeo, and even haru could probably fit in more than one of these categories, but i put them in the ones i thought suited them best. wanna discuss? leave a comment or an ask! ill be happy 2 talk it through with u <3.
yes i DID put in hcs about how long they last sexually. no i do NOT regret it. im speaking my TRUTH!!!
The Lover Boys:
Haku, Haru, Sho, Luca, Zenji, Rui
do not last long but recover fast and can go multiple roundsÂ
prefer switching up their roles (domâsub, subâdom) more oftenÂ
they love like it's an incurable chronic terminal disease. it's never leaving them.
all-consuming, takes up most their time, they're drowning and falling and losing their minds 4 u
You like to tell yourself you're prepared, but is that ever really true? No, not really. The way his voice drops several octaves into a low purr just from seeing you should've been warning enough as to what you were in for. You didn't expect the all-consuming, suffocating love he'd trapped you in, but were you really complaining? As far as you were concerned, you were also convinced it was meant to be, and if he was a little crazy about it, that was a small price to pay. Of course, you eventually learn why he's crazy about it - he's never had it. The truest feeling of connection, the ability to just let it all go in one person's presence, the time to really feel another person. It's eluded him for so long, and now he has it, but it's threatened by a curse, something he cannot control. It's frightening, and though he tried not to, he ultimately buries you in his love, trying to find a way to make it last. It's okay though. As the threat wanes, so will his suffocation. The love will always be intense, but he will learn how to do it right.Â
The Lost Boys:
Towa, Taiga, Jiro, Ed
they last so unbelievably long u don't know how they do it
love in more subtle ways bc 2 them, true love is quietÂ
they will do loud and bold professions of it, but the real love is displayed quietlyÂ
prefer 2 stick 2 one role (either dom or sub), not super flexibleÂ
The occasional huge flower bouquet, expensive jewelry set, or new bag were thoughtful, but mostly just for show. He reveled in the attention, the jealous stares, the sucking of teeth, the eye rolls - all of it. Because he had you, not them. But that, of course, isn't all there is to it. While he may be relatively distant in public despite the extravagant gifts, he's rather sweet and attentive in private. He hides it better than a LoverBoy, but in truth, his heart bleeds just like theirs, and he feels the need to consistently strive to win your affections. You're amongst great people, after all. How can he make sure he stands out, all the time, just for you? You understand this, of course, and you're always quick to reassure him. He will give and give and give and give, in so many ways. You almost think he's bottomless, what with how much of himself he offers up, nearly all the time. But it's alright. He will learn to remind himself that he need not give himself away to bits simply to keep your attention, especially when he's already the apple of your eye. The gifts never stop though, and neither does his obvious enjoyment in the attention it gets you. He will never stop showing you off.
The Tragic Boys:
Leo, Subaru, Ren, Kaito, Yuri
love fluctuates. intense then quiet, hot then cold, all-consuming then insignificantÂ
very transparent ghouls with few layers. what u see is what u get.
often don't last long and take longer to recoverÂ
a little more flexible with role changing, but do have solid preferencesÂ
You are never, ever prepared. He's like a pendulum, swaying back and forth between endless, bountiful devotion and a cold shoulder the following day. He's not sure how to handle this love he has for you. It's unfamiliar, it's big, it's loud, it's petrifying. He's scared he'll do something wrong, and on those days when the fear eats him alive, he closes up, rejecting your presence. But then, he sees how down you are, and knows that wasn't right, so the following day he's at your beck and call. He'll do whatever you ask, just say the word and it's done, for you. His fatal flaw is that he never communicates his deep-seated fears, instead choosing to let them rumble in his gut and disrupt your relationship as a consequence. He wants you, though, and he never wants you to doubt that. He'll communicate eventually, the words spilling out before he can think much of them, apologies and desperate sobs with them. He won't shut down anymore after this, choosing to remain like an open book for you to read at any time. He will learn to hold you the right way, without clamming up nervously when you tell him he's perfect.Â
The Silent Boys:Â
Tohma, Romeo, Ritsu, Lyca, Alan, Jin
their love is consistentÂ
never changes, always with immense depth, but never readily apparentÂ
love is like a pretty serene waterfall with unseen strong currents capable of killing someoneÂ
like to switch it up every now and again (mayyybe domâsub, subâdom yk)
last moderately. some might finish fast, some might take a while.
His attitude and demeanor towards you hardly change. He loves you, and he's serious about it, but that won't mean special treatment, extra gifts, or public displays of love. He will love you exactly as he always has, and sees nothing wrong with it. His love is in how he looks out for you, how he worries for you despite himself, how he may allow himself a small smile when you approach, or a sigh heavy laden with devotion, after you wrap your arms around him, and before he pushes you off of him. It's okay because you know how his heart beats erratically in his chest when you approach, which he's strangely good at hiding. You know how his breath hitches in his throat every time he sees you, his eyes glazing over like you're a vision to be committed to memory. You know how he treasures you, his love hidden under his vast sea of responsibilities. Peel the layers back and you'll see he's yours in all ways that matter, but he also knows he can't let that get in the way of his daily life. Once he has the time, and is no longer bearing the weight of prying eyes and overwhelming expectations, he'll build his life around you, to make sure you feel centered in his life, as he does in yours.
well if nobody really likes these at least i had fun. amen!
no blurb 2 put here except that i have a ren fic incoming soon bc my regular [đ] anon went crazy in my inbox about that boy and his damn collarbones.
y'all have a wonderful day im so tired.

we all know about the parallel of mike hugging karen when he feels like he's lost will, but i've never seen anyone talk about the other parallels in the s1 and s3 heroes scenes. there are more than you think!
will's fake body being pulled out of the quarry VS will (+ the others) pulling out of the driveway for california
a close up of mike looking at both
mike leaving the scene on his bike after 'losing' will
in one, he has no hesitation. he gets his bike and doesn't look back. not at wills fake dead body, not at el (which would be odd if he knew he was in love with her then...), not at dustin and lucas, not at anyone. he keeps moving forward.
in the other, he is full of hesitation as the other bike away, not looking back. mike stays back and takes one last look at will's house, looking nervous, before hesitantly tearing his eyes away and biking off, trailing behind dustin lucas and max.
do i really need to explain the implications of that....
mike entering the wheeler house visibly upset after losing will, and karen immediately noticing
mike seeking out a hug from karen, something he rarely does
mike hugging karen
note how both clips end with mike moving/sinking deeper into the moment. i'm not sure what the best way to describe this is, but im talking about mike shoving his face into karen's shoulder in the s1 scene and his eyes flicking down in the s3 scene. i know it seems like it doesn't matter, but it does. sprinkling things like that in as a director is purposeful! it's showing how mike is processing the events. in s1 he sinks deeper into karen's comfort, further breaking down because he thinks will is dead. in s3 he doesn't do that. he is extremely still, eyes not moving as he is in shock. then his eyes do move at the last moment, showing he is further processing whatever event has occurred, transitioning from shock to really processing whatever happened.
raw emotion vs icy shock.
and oomf @reo-bylerwagon who is a film major told me that the way the camera tilts upward in the s3 clip is used to show that a realization has occurred, or that something new is being revealed. does that not PERFECTLY line up with:
1. the way mike seems extremely shocked as though he has realized something huge
2. the fact that LITERALLY over that moment is a hopper voice over where he says "to turn back the clock, to make things go back to how they were"
and 3. the way he behaves in s4 (being weird about touching will, rink o mania, etc.)
so yeah, these are definitely parallels through and through and it's really interesting. mike has lost will in both, but in different ways. his reactions say a lot about how he's processing the events and how he views them/his relationships.
also reminder that this is not delusional in the slightest because heroes has only played twice and it's in these two sequences.
and to anyone thinking "well they're just trying to show that mike deeply cares for will, just not in a romantic way!"
......
why in the fresh FUCK would they eat up SO MUCH screen time to show that mike platonically cares about will, rather than use that time to develop his relationship with el and, i don't know, show that he loves her??? why would they feed into will's unrequited love like this??? spoiler alert: THEY AREN'T.
that would be doing WAY too much for a relationship that will end in an amicable split so one can get married and one can get over his deep seeded love for the other and navigate the (extremely homophobic) world alone.
like yall are very clearly not writers or creatives in the slightest đđđ any writer (or anyone with the faintest creative/analytical bone in their body) will immediately understand why that's fucking dumb and makes no sense. yall are just heteronormative af and instead of admitting that it's greatly affecting your perception of the characters you double and TRIPLE down until you sound like a homophobic disaster
also
season 1 - heroes plays (when mike feels like he lost will)
season 2 - heroes does not play
season 3 - heroes plays (when mike feels like he lost will)
seasons 4 - heroes does not play
season 5 - heroes will play...? perhaps the original david bowie version? and byler will finally kiss as though nothing could fall and the shame will be on the other side? and they can be heroes? just for one day?
so yeah anyways byler endgame
#this took me forever#but i will sacrifice any amount of time to prove byler endgame#stranger things#byler#will byers#mike wheeler#byler endgame#mike wheeler i know what you are#byler analysis#milkvan is bones#anti milkvan#byler parallel#byler parallels#byler cinematography

Heart On Your Sleeve Part 7
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6
written for steddiebigbang2024 and belatedly posting here!
-----
Steve's half asleep on the couch when Dustin arrives the next day, and Robin lets him in.
âHearts out,â Dustin demands immediately.
Steve winces. âNot a good idea, bud. My ribs are-â
âIt's not your ribs,â Dustin interrupts. âYou think I didn't see some blood when you were waving your heart around? Don't treat me like a baby, Steve, come on.â
Robin looks at him, and Steve shrugs.
âOkay,â he says, and Robin takes his heart out from her chest.
It looks better than it did yesterday, but it's still pretty pulpy, and Dustin goes pale.
âSteve,â he whispers, voice cracking.
âIt's getting better,â Steve promises.
Dustin frowns, looking between him and Robin. âAre you having trouble breathing again? Why is Robin holding it?â
âIt heals better when someone else has it,â Steve says. âSome kind of science thing.â
Dustin's frown deepens, then smooths out, and he holds his hands out to Robin. âMy turn.â
âDustin, I'm not going to ask you to-â Steve starts.
âYou can't ask, I'm telling you I'm going to,â Dustin retorts. âI'm the first person who carried it, remember?â
Steve looks at Robin. She shrugs, and he can feel that she's not opposed to it, so he shrugs back. She hands his heart over to Dustin. There's some fumbling as Steve gives Robin's heart back to her and takes Dustin's instead, and then -
Huh.
Dustin is just as stubborn as he's always seemed, but underneath that is a quiet fear and a sense of love deeper than anything Steve's ever felt - other than from Robin.
âCome here.â
Steve gives him a hug - or as much of a hug as he can manage - then leans back on the couch again. âBreakfast's in the kitchen,â he says, already closing his eyes.
â
The next time he opens them, it's to the sound of half a dozen gremlins talking in what's probably supposed to be hushed tones.
âHow did you all even get in here?â he asks.
They jump, then Dustin juts his chin out.
âI called them,â he says.
âWe are here to help,â El says solemnly.
âDustin told us what happened,â Lucas says.
Steve grimaces. âLook, you guys don't have to-â
âWill it work?â El asks.
Steve blinks at her. âWill what work?â
âIf I try to heal your heart. Dustin says he looked it up, and it works best if it's someone you care about. Am I?â
Oh, that's just cheating. How is he supposed to protest with those eyes looking at him.
âYeah, Ellie, of course you are. It'll work.â
She holds out her hands determinedly. "I don't have my powers. I couldn't save my - my dad, but I can do this. I can help you."
And that's that.
The next thing he knows, they've scheduled up a rotation along with Robin, and taken over his house, setting themselves up to watch TV or play games or do whatever else.
He finds himself alone with El, and he looks at her for a moment before asking, âDo you like cookies?â
Of course she likes cookies.
Steve can't actually do much work, but he can sit at the kitchen table and give directions, and she determinedly follows all of them as she puts together cookie dough.
He can feel the rough edges of her grief and her hopelessness, and he tries to give back as much support as he can.
She isn't alone.
âMay I ask you something?â she asks, when a batch of cookies are in the oven and they're eating cookie dough.
âSure,â he says.
âDustin is not your brother.â
That's not a question, but he answers it anyway. âNot the way Mike is Nancy's brother or Will is Jonathan's, no.â
She frowns. âI don't understand,â she admits. âMike says you are brave. That he likes you better now that you're not Nancy's boyfriend. I thought - you are like Mike.â
Oh, he is definitely remembering that for later. âLike Mike how?â
âMike stepped off of a cliff for Dustin.â
Steve's brain screeches to a halt. âMike what?â
âThere were mouth breathers - bullies. They threatened to hurt Dustin if Mike didn't jump. He did. I caught him,â she's quick to reassure him, like that's what he's stuck on. âSo - I thought you are like Mike. You protect your friends.â
âLike you, too,â Steve says, deciding to table the whole Mike thing for now. âYou protect your friends.â
She smiles at him, a tiny, fleeting thing before her face scrunches in confusion. âBut Max and Dustin and Lucas were not always your friends. Max says you jumped in front of a demodog the day you met her. I don't understand.â
Yeah, Steve's not sure he really understands either - a feeling she must pick up, because she looks even more confused.
âI just - wanted to help.â It sounds even lamer than it did when he said that about cleaning up the graffiti at the theater, but it's what he's got. âMaybe - we don't have to be like anyone, you know? We can just be like us. We can just want to help.â
Her expression smooths out, and he can feel - she kind of likes that.
âWhat I like,â she says, which is clearly a call back to something else with the way she's feeling, though he has no idea what.
It's okay. He doesn't really have to know what, he thinks - they understand each other.
And they have cookies.
â
He calls Mrs. Byers, just to make sure she knows where Will and El are.
She does, of course, but he also wants to check on her.
Her voice is unsteady and thick with grief, but she tells him not to worry about her, asks how the kids are doing, how he is.
He doesn't want to worry her, either, but he tells her what the kidsâ plan is, how hard they're trying to help him.
How guilty he feels about it.
She's gentle when she tells him to let them help, that they care about him and they want to be able to do something good. He promises he will, and that he'll look after them.
He wishes he could do more.
â
Mike's up next, like he wants to get it over with.
Steve wants to tease him about the whole thinking he's brave thing, but when he's hit with everything Mike feels - worry and love and pride and protectiveness and how can I keep them all safe what am I supposed to do, he finds he doesn't want to give him a hard time.
Mike's angry at him, but he's angry at him because he's scared. Because he doesn't want to like him, doesn't want to trust him, but he does.
Mike likes him a whole lot, actually.
And Steve guesses that Mike can feel his own slightly amused fondness, because the kid scowls at him. âWhat?â
âNothing,â Steve replies.
He thinks for a while, while Mike sullenly sits at the kitchen table with him and pretends like Steve doesn't know that he actually has feelings.
Eventually, even though he knows it's going to get him scoffed at, he says, âDo you know why teams have co-captains?â
Mike rolls his eyes. âBecause they're too stupid to figure out how to play themselves?â
He tamps down on his irritation, though he knows not quickly enough, because Mike looks smug.
âSo there's more than one person to make the hard choices. So if one person can't be there, the other can. So no one has to be in two places at once. So one person doesn't have to be everything to everyone,â Steve continues.
Mike scoffs, but Steve can still feel that it resonates with him. âYour stupid sports game is way less important than real life danger.â
âYeah, sure. But so is your dragons game, and you guys use that all the time.â
He can feel that Mike wants to protest, though he also reluctantly thinks that Steve's right.
âSo, what, you think we should pick captains for our Party?â Mike asks.
âNah. You're already the party leader, right?â Steve asks. He knows that's how Mike sees himself, knows that's the pressure he puts on himself.
Now more than ever.
âBut last time and this time, we had to split up, right? And you can't be everywhere.â
âYou don't get it,â Mike says. âIt's my job to protect them. How am I supposed to do it if I can't look out for everyone?â
âYou get some help. Look - that's what I'm here for, all right? Let me help watch out for you guys.â
Mike snorts. âYou?â
Steve raises an eyebrow. âYeah, I think it's worked out so far.â
Mike glances away. Whatever he's thinking of, there's the faint memory of fear and an unbidden, reluctant wash of relief, of safety.
âFine,â he mutters. âWhatever, you're in the Party.â
Steve doesn't point out that he's already been in it, according to some of them. He has a feeling that's the most he's going to get out of Mike, for now.
It's enough.
â
It's easy, with Max and Lucas.
Probably easier than it should be.
He and Max swap, and he sits with her angry, confused grief. He can feel her daring him to say something, so - he doesn't.
He opens his arms, and he says, âCome here,â and she's exhausted enough that she does.
He hugs her tight while she cries into his chest, angry with herself for crying and angry with Billy for being so terrible and saving her life anyway. Angry with Steve, too, but that one's too complicated for him to figure out with the echoes of the feelings he gets from her.
âI'm here,â he says after a while, even though it makes her cry harder. âI'm right here.â
He sits with Lucas, after, staring at the door where El and Max have retreated to try to get some sleep.
âI don't know how to help her,â Lucas says.
He doesn't sound lost, but his heart beats in Steve's chest, and he can feel it anyway.
âMe either,â Steve admits, because he knows Lucas can feel it from him, too.
âWhat am I supposed to do?â Lucas asks.
Steve thinks for a moment. âBe there for her. Don't push her, but make sure she knows you're there. That you're not going anywhere.â
Some of the helplessness fades, and Lucas nods.
âYeah, I can do that.â
They're quiet for a little bit.
âI want to try out for the basketball team,â Lucas says suddenly, then shoots an almost shy little look over at Steve at his pleased surprise.
âThat's awesome, man. You want to get some more practice in after a few weeks?â Steve asks.
Lucas nods, then hesitates. âI don't think that Mike and Dustin and Will are going to like it.â
Steve frowns. âThey like me okay.â
âWell, yeah, but that's different. We used to think you were a douchebag.â
It startles a laugh out of Steve. âWow, thanks, Sinclair.â
Lucas shrugs, unapologetic. âWe know you aren't now. But they're going to think I'm abandoning them.â
Steve considers. âAre you?â
âNo! I'll still play D&D and stuff with them, we'll still be the Party. I want to prove you can do both. I want - I don't want people to mess with them. I want to do what you did.â
Steve swallows, suddenly a little choked up. He wishes he could blame it on his injuries, but he knows damn well Lucas can feel how touched he is.
âYou're gonna be great, man,â he says when he has himself more under control. âYou're gonna be way better than I ever was.â
â
When Will's up in the little rotation the gremlins have worked out, he lingers a few steps away, hesitant.
"Hey, man, you don't have to," Steve says awkwardly. "I can tell the other gremlins that you're needed at home."
Will looks at him for a moment. "Do I count?"
"What?" Steve asks.
"You didn't hunt a demodog with me, or barricade a bus in a junkyard, or fight off a bully, or go to the Upside Down tunnels, or invade a Russian bunker. You just let me into movies for free and let me hang out at your house with everyone. Is that enough?" Will's tone had been very matter of fact, but it goes a little bit more tenuous there.
"Yeah," Steve says. "Yeah, it is."
Will comes up to the table, holding his hands out expectantly, and Steve drops his heart into them.
It doesn't hurt, but by now, he doesn't expect it to. Steve's not sure he'll ever be able to thank any of the kids for this, but if Joyce is right, if being able to do something helps them after everything they just went through, then he guesses he's glad for that.
The awkwardness lingers a little after they've exchanged hearts. Probably because now they can feel an echo of each other's feelings. It makes Steve scramble for a topic.
"Mike and Lucas apologize to you yet?" Steve asks.
Will looks at him in confusion. "What for?"
"You think I didn't notice they've been kind of shitty? My money's on Mike being more insensitive about it, but Lucas has been right there with him, you know? Ditching Dustin half the time since he's been back, and before that it was always you playing fifth wheel."
Will looks a little surprised. âHow'd you even notice that?â
"Because the same thing happened to me," Steve admits.
"I doubt it," Will mutters.
"It did!" Steve insists. "I had two best friends growing up. Then in middle school, they started dating, and suddenly every time we hung out I was the third wheel. It drove me nuts at first."
Will frowns. "Wait, but. You were always dating girls."
"Well, yeah, because I knew I was supposed to. I did a lot of things because it was what I was supposed to do." Steve'd liked all of them well enough, enjoyed dating them - especially once he started having sex and realized how good at it he could be - but he's not going to pretend like there isn't a reason his relationships didn't last very long.
Nancy'd been the only one he could see a forever with.
The kid's brows furrow, like he's not really sure what to do with that information.
"My point is-â Steve points at him with his spoon. â-don't let them rush you, or make you feel like you have to do something you don't want to do just to fit in with them. They're a lot better friends than mine were; they'll understand."
Will considers that. "Jonathan says I should never like something just because people tell me I should. That it's okay that I'm a freak, because he's a freak, too.â
âYeah?â Steve asks. âWhat'd you say back?â
Will scrunches his nose. âI asked if that was why he didn't have any friends.â
He shouldn't, but Steve gives a little snort of laughter. Oh, no, Will is funny.
âYour brother has friends,â Steve protests, to counter his laughter. âHe's got Nancy and me.â
Will rolls his eyes. âNancy's his girlfriend.â
âPoint in your favor,â Steve admits. âStill leaves me. And Robin will be his friend.â
Will toys with an apple from the fruit basket on the island. âAre you and Jonathan even really friends? It's not like you guys hang out.â
âOuch, Byers, I thought you were the nice one,â Steve says, giving the kid a fond little smile to show he doesn't mean it. âThere's different kinds of friends, I guess. Did, uh. Did Jonathan ever tell you how I got involved with all this?â
âNot really.â Will says with a shrug. âJust that you and him and Nancy fought a demogorgon.â
âThat's because your brother's a good guy,â Steve tells him, then nudges the chair across from him.
It only moves a handful of inches, making Steve grimace - he'd wanted to kick it all the way out from under the table, but clearly he's not at full kicking strength. Still, it does the job, and Will takes a seat.
âI saw Nancy and Jonathan together on her bed one night, when she and I had just started dating. She couldn't tell me about the Upside Down stuff yet, but I knew she was lying, and I thought they were seeing each other behind my back.â
Will's looking at him, eyes huge, and it makes guilt twist in his stomach at the thought of what he said to Jonathan that day.
âWe got in a fight the next day,â Steve admits. âI was really mean to him. So I went to your house later to apologize, and that's when I stumbled in on him and Nancy setting their trap. I gotta tell you, it was a really rude awakening, getting my apology speech interrupted by a demogorgon.â
âTry getting your bike ride home interrupted by one,â Will says dryly.
For a moment, Steve wonders if he should feel guilty bringing it up and potentially traumatizing the kid, but - Will doesn't look like he wants to be tiptoed around, and he can feel the faint trepidation from the kid's heart beating in his chest. The fear that someone's going to treat you different.
So Steve snorts instead. âOkay, you've got me beat,â he concedes. âYou win the gold medal of demogorgon attacks.â
âThanks.â It's just as dry, but Will's smiling at Steve like he said the right thing, so he'll take it. âDo I get an actual medal?â
Steve gives a surprised little laugh. âYou know what? Sure. Come on.â
His pace is slow as he heads upstairs, and out of the corner of his eye, he's pretty sure he sees Will's hands twitch like he's debating trying to help him up. Steve resolutely ignores it until they get to his room, and then he unearths his first place medal from the medley swimming relay in eighth grade.
âHang on, let me-â Steve digs around for some duct tape and a sharpie, then slaps a strip of tape on the back of the medal, pressing it down to get it to stick well. He writes demogorgan attack on the tape, blows on it to get it to dry, then hands it to Will with all the solemnity as if he was actually presenting him with a first place medal.
âOh my God,â Will says, looking a little gobsmacked. âYou're a nerd. You're one of us!â
âHey! You spread that around, and I'll take your medal back!â Steve threatens.
âNo way,â Will retorts. âCome back when you get dragged into the Upside Down by a demogorgon for dinner.â
âNo thanks,â Steve says. âIt's all yours.â
Will is beaming at him, and Steve kind of hates to ruin the mood - but he also really has to sit down. The downside to having them all on a rotation of heart exchanges is that he can't hide when it gets really bad.
He sits down on his bed while he can still do it without just dropping down onto the mattress. Will watches him for a moment, then carefully sits on the bed too, a foot or so away from him.
âSo - that's why you and Jonathan are friends? You apologized and you fought a monster together?â Will asks.
âYeah, I guess so. Look, there's different kinds of friends, right? There's the friends you have because you share a class together, or the ones you play the same sport - or, uh, hobby with, or the ones you just hang out with sometimes. And then there's the good ones, the ones who know you. Jonathan and I might not hang out outside of school, but I know he's got my back, and I've got his. Any time he needed me, I'd be right there.â
His feelings about Jonathan are - complicated, but that's the truth. Whatever else, Steve cares about the guy a hell of a lot, trusts him like he trusts very few others.
Steve's not sure what Will can pick up from him, but it must be enough to convince him that Steve's sincere, because he just quietly says, âOh.â
âThat goes for you, too,â Steve tells him. âOkay? You need me, I'm there.â
Will's cheeks go just a little pink, and there's a faint flutter of some kind in his heart, but Steve can't really tell what it is. âOkay.â
They're quiet for a moment, but it's not really awkward anymore - or at least, not beyond Steve trying to figure out how long before he's going to be able to get himself back downstairs without leaning on anyone.
âDid you date Nancy because you were supposed to?â Will asks after a while.
âNancy's different,â Steve replies automatically, hearing an echo of himself saying the same thing to Dustin the day they were looking for Dart, and knowing it's just as true now as it was then, even if he's over her now - or as over her as he thinks he'll ever be.
Will mulls that over. âSo - I might find a girl one day that's different, even if I've never liked girls before?â
There's something about the way that Will says it that sends him back into the Starcourt bathroom with Robin, watching her stare at him as he said but Tammy Thompson's a girl, waiting for it to click into place for him, and -
Oh.
Oh, shit.
Oh, shit, he thinks he's accidentally implied something he didn't really mean to imply here. He thinks about trying to stutter out a clarification, that when Steve said he did it because he was supposed to, he didn't mean that he didn't like girls - he loves girls, girls are fantastic -
But.
But there's Eddie.
Will's voice had been so small, and whatever he can feel from Steve's heart in his chest is making his eyes go wide and scared, and it -
âMaybe,â Steve finds himself saying before he really knows what he's talking about. âBut maybe not. And that's - that's okay. Whoever you like, or don't like, whoever you want to date or not date, it's okay.â
Steve pauses, feels like that isn't enough, and scrunches his face up. âUnless they're like, objectively terrible. If you get a crush on some little asshole, I can and will make fun of you.â
There's a ghost of a smile there. âLike Dustin and Suzie?â he asks.
âWay worse than Dustin and Suzie,â Steve says. âI had to be nice about Suzie, because everyone thought Dustin was making her up. I'm talking no holds barred here.â
â
"Do you think that guy's dead?"
Steve doesn't have to ask what guy Dustin means. He grimaces a little, because even if he wanted to, there's no way he can lie with their hearts in each other's chests. "We blew up their lab, man, I think most of them are dead."
Dustin frowns, looking like he's not sure if he thinks that's a good enough answer.
"I guess," he says finally. Then, so quietly Steve can barely hear it, Dustin asks, "Am I a bad person?"
"What?" Steve asks, thrown. "You've saved the world how many times now?"
Dustin gives him a look. "The same amount of times that you have."
Steve bumps Dustin's shoulder with the back of his knuckles. "Saved Nancy and Jonathan, maybe, but not sure how much world saving I did the first time. You got one up on me."
Dustin rolls his eyes. "Basically the same."
"All right, all right," Steve says. "We've saved the world a few times. Bad people don't usually do that."
Dustin fiddles with the hem of his shirt. "Billy did. Kind of. He helped, at the end. Does that make him a good person?"
Shit, Steve is way too concussed for this.
"No," he says after a little while. "I don't think so. Maybe if he had more time, but I don't think one good thing that he did while he was already dying makes up for all the other bad things he did."
Dustin screws up his face in concentration, then nods. "Me too."
Steve'd really like to just end the conversation there, but he's pretty sure Dustin needs him to keep going, and, well.
He's always going to be there when Dustin needs him.
"What makes you think you're a bad person?" he asks.
Dustin stares at his hands for a little while. "I don't feel bad."
Steve tries to make sense of that for a moment, then gives up. "You lost me."
"I killed that guy," Dustin says, looking back up at him almost defiantly. "And I don't feel bad. I'm not sorry he's dead."
Guilt stabs through him so strongly that he knows Dustin must feel some of it, and he grimaces a little when Dustin frowns at him.
"What was that?" Dustin asks.
"I'm sorry that you had to do that," Steve says. "It's not fair."
Dustin scoffs. "None of this is fair."
All right, yeah, Dustin's got a point. Okay, new tactic.
"Look at me, Dust," Steve says softly.
Dustin pulls a face. "I am looking at you."
"Ugh, no, I mean look at me." Steve waves a hand at himself.
"You look like shit," Dustin tells him.
"Exactly," Steve agrees. "You know why I look like shit?"
There's an echo of something remarkably similar to the guilt Steve just felt.
"Because of me," Dustin says, voice small.
Shit.
"What? No! How is this your fault?" Steve asks.
"I pushed the Russian message thing. You only looked into it because I wanted to," Dustin says.
"That's not - I looked into it for the same reason I helped you look for Dart, okay? Because I'm in this, and we're in this together, and if there's something out there, it's going to find us. That's not your fault."
Dustin doesn't look convinced.
"There is nothing that's going to keep me away from being in this with you, okay? Even if you didn't push me. Even if you didn't even tell me. I'd find out, and then I'd be mad." He pauses. "Like, really mad. Like telling your mom you ditched me and got in trouble so she doesn't let you leave the house for a year mad."
"Okay, okay," Dustin says, but he looks happier. "So what was your point, then?"
His point?
Right, his point.
"I look like shit because of the dead guy and his buddies." Part of Steve thinks he should hedge around this, try to sugarcoat it a little, but - treating Dustin like he's a kid who can't handle this isn't going to do anything. "You saw my heart, Dustin. You think the guys who did that were just going to let me walk out of there?"
Dustin looks at him, eyes big. "No," he admits quietly.
"The only reason I'm still standing here is because of you. I mean it, man - I'd be dead without you. And it sucks that you had to do that, and I wish I could have been faster or better, saved you from being the one that had to, but I'm not sorry that he's dead, either. Maybe that makes me a bad person. Maybe I'm a bad person because I would do the same thing, because I'd have killed all of them to protect you and I wouldn't feel bad at all."
Dustin's lip quivers a little. "You're not a bad person, Steve."
"Neither are you," Steve tells him.
The kid's eyes look suspiciously wet. Steve shifts, straightening up a little and lifting his arms.
"Come here."
Dustin drops down onto the couch, squished into his side. Steve drapes his arm over his shoulder, gingerly hugging him, and pretending that he can't hear Dustin's quiet sniffles or feel the shake of his shoulders.
"You're like the best person I know," Steve says softly.
"You too," Dustin replies, voice a little wet. "You're gonna be okay, right?"
"Yeah. I'm gonna be fine."
His heart might not ever be the same, but with all of them trying so hard to keep it together and help it heal - it makes him feel pathetic, but he kind of thinks he might be even better.
It seems a good enough response for Dustin, who stays tucked in against his side, eyes slipping shut like he's going to fall asleep right there.
Steve wants to bitch about it, but he also doesn't want to move, so he just lets it happen.
"I used to be so jealous of Mike and Will," Dustin mutters sleepily after a while.
"Yeah?" Steve asks absently.
"All this sucks, and they had Nancy and Jonathan," Dustin says.
"Mmm," Steve agrees, feeling pretty close to sleep himself.
"I'm not anymore though."
"No?" Steve asks.
"Nah," Dustin mumbles. "You're way better than Nancy and Jonathan."
This is already written, and my plan is to post one part a day until it's all up here!

A/N: I swear I could look at his smile forever. An extra special thanks to @elephants-bubbles-brachosauruses for the amazing ideas about using "bun in the oven" and Deac being oblivious!
In your bakeryâs kitchen, you sit and press the back of your hand against your mouth. The last week or so, you have been nauseous, and emotional, and the smells you once found mouthwateringly amazing are now causing your stomach to churn.
âWhat are you making, boss?â your employee Tristan asks. âSmells amazing.â
You increase the pressure of your hand against your mouth while fighting the urge to throw up. It hits you then: you might be pregnant. What other explanation exists for a sudden sensitivity to certain smells and tastes, plus the morning sickness that has been pulling you out of bed even before Deacon wakes?
âTristan, I need you to take over,â you say quickly. âI have a quick errand to run, and it may turn into a personal day.â
âSure thing. Are you okay?â
âYeah, Iâm fine. Thereâs lemon snaps in the oven and cheesecake filling setting in the fridge. Scheduleâs on the board, call if you need anything.â
âOf course. Donât worry about anything, just take care of you.â
You nod in thanks, then hang your apron on its designated hook before gathering your things. Thereâs a pharmacy just a few blocks away, but you want to take the tests at home rather than in a public restroom.
In less than an hour, you have five tests waiting on your bathroom sink as you sit on the edge of the tub and watch your leg bounce with the timer on your phone. When it dings, you exhale before you stand. You donât have time to wonder how youâll feel if theyâre negative before you see two pink lines. Then, a plus sign. And a digital message reading âPregnant 3+.â Every test is positive.
You smile as you gather the tests and place them in a box below the sink. Telling Deacon has to be special, but you donât want to wait. A baker joke, you think as you prepare to return to the bakery. It will be perfect.
Your stop at the bakery is quick; you ensure Tristan and the rest of your staff are doing well, then gather an assortment of treats. You ensure that Deacon and his teamâs known favorites are included before you leave for HQ. Since marrying Deacon, youâve been welcomed into their station more times than you can count, and theyâre family to you.
âWait,â Deacon says, dropping his guard.
âFor what?â Street asks as he steps back.
âSee how he perked up like a dog?â Luca points out.
âUh, yeah.â
Hondo interrupts to explain, âThat means his wife is incoming. Iâd say in about, three⌠twoâŚâ
âMrs. Kay!â Rocker yells around the corner.
âIâm getting pretty good at that, Deac!â Hondo brags. âWatch your back, my man.â
âHi, guys!â you greet as you round the corner.
Rocker is carrying the boxes for you now, and Deaconâs team canât decide whether to look at you or the baked goods you brought them.
âDig in, theyâre still warm,â you say.
Luca, Hondo, and Street tap your arm gently in thanks as they follow Rocker to a nearby table. Deacon smiles as he exits the ring and walks to your side.
âI missed you,â you murmur as he pulls you into a quick hug.
âMissed you too,â Deacon agrees. âI didnât get to see you for long this morning. Are you feeling better?â
You nod, remembering that a few hours ago, you were sick but didnât know why. Now, you press your hand against your thigh to keep it from resting on your nonexistent baby bump.
âI brought your favorite again,â you tell Deacon. âIâve been thinking that I could use that flavor in some other kind of recipe, maybe make it a bit savory somehow.â
âAnything you make will be amazing.â
âLike you?â you ask, smiling as you lean against his side.
âLike you.â Deacon keeps his arm around your waist and drops his chin to kiss you quickly. He looks at the open boxes and says, âYou brought more today.â
âI made a ton,â you agree. Then, you smile as you add, âPlus, thereâs a bun in the oven.â
Deaconâs brows furrow, but his smile never drops as he asks, âJust one? Thatâs a terrible business plan.â
You laugh, caught off guard by how easily your pregnancy announcement went over his head. Deacon has been incredibly attuned to you and your needs since long before you were married. Yet, when you tell him youâre pregnant, he thinks youâre talking about your bakery.
âIâm going to go get some before itâs all gone,â Deacon whispers, carefully removing his arm from around you.
âEnjoy,â you murmur, shaking your head in amusement.
âThe weekly visits may have been a terrible idea,â Deacon announces when he returns home after his shift. âItâs just enough time to make me want you around more.â
âIâm sure Hondo feels the same,â you agree.
âWhat are you up to?â
Deacon wraps his arms around your waist and drops his chin to your shoulder, pressing a kiss against your neck. You lean against him and set your pen aside, the beginnings of a new recipe jotted down in your favorite recipe binder.
âI started baking a new recipe,â you begin carefully, âbut it wonât be ready for 8 months, give or take.â
Deacon hums, then asks, âHow do you get your recipes so perfect? Besides being brilliant and all the time you put in?â
You close your eyes, smile, and drop your head against his shoulder. Deacon is smart, but it seems heâs entirely oblivious when it comes to a baby.
âMostly time, trial and error,â you answer. âWhich hopefully only applies to baking and not making other things.â
âAre you going to work tomorrow?â Deacon asks.
âNo. Why? Did you get called in?â
âYouâre stuck with me.â
You hum and decide to try a more direct approach. âI promise that if I jump out of bed and run to the bathroom to be sick, itâs not because of you,â you joke. âThe bun in my oven just doesnât seem to like mornings.â
Deacon nods against you before he steps back and offers to make dinner. You consider showing him the positive tests, but now you want to see how long it will take for Deacon to realize what youâve been trying to tell him all day.
Forty-eight hours after learning that you are expecting a baby with your husband, Deacon, he has yet to catch on to a single one of your hints. Youâve tried every version of the âbun in the ovenâ line, mentioned that you shouldnât have rum cake, made jokes about your morning sickness, and even pointed out that being a baker is the perfect occupation to make it easier to eat for two. Deacon Kay is oblivious, youâve discovered.
So, to get your mind off the dilemma of how to tell your husband without just blurting out Iâm pregnant, youâve taken to experimenting in the kitchen. When the third batch of your sweet and savory cookie crisps is finished, you carry the tray around the bakery and ask for your employeesâ opinions. After six of them give you a thumbs up and one admits that she doesnât like crunchy cookies, you package the new item and wave goodbye to your kitchen assistant.
Youâre going over your weekly visit to SWAT HQ, but you donât care. As you walk in, you hear Deacon talking.
âHello, beautiful,â Hondo calls. âI finally beat Deacon to you.â
âNot by much,â Deacon points out as he walks to your side. âWhoa, what are those?â
âThey donât have a name yet,â you answer, passing the box to him. âTheyâre a twist on a savory chocolate chip cookie crisp.â
âIâm sorry,â Hondo tells you, laying his hand on your shoulder. âYour husband was distracted by the cookies. How are you feeling?â
Deacon rolls his eyes and passes the box of cookies to Street.
âHow did you come up with this recipe?â Luca inquires.
You decide that now, surrounded by your friends, is as good a time as any to try one more time.
âI think the bun in the oven is making me a better baker,â you admit.
The men around you freeze, and everything is silent for several seconds.
âCongratulations!â Luca exclaims, hugging you tightly.
Hondo points at you with a bright smile and says, âYou canât give me that look when I call you Mama now!â
âOh my gosh,â Street murmurs, reaching toward your stomach. âCan we call them Cookie?â
You laugh and say, âSounds like Iâm bloated, but sure.â
âWhat?â Deacon asks slowly. When you look back at him, his eyes are wide, and his brows are raised high on his forehead. âWhat?â he repeats.
âIâve been telling you for two days, Deacon!â
âNo, you havenât!â
You smile and take Deaconâs hand. âYouâre way too pretty to be this oblivious.â
âHey, if prettyâs all youâre after,â Hondo interjects, shrugging as he raises a cookie toward his mouth.
âBack off,â Deacon chides playfully. He looks at you and asks, âYouâre pregnant?â
You smile and nod as you raise your hands to his shoulders. âYouâre going to be a dad, Sergeant Kay.â
Deaconâs eyes brighten as he smiles. Then, his smile drops long enough for him to mumble, âOh.â
âYou just caught on to everything Iâve been saying,â you accuse.
Deacon kisses you rather than admitting youâre right but pulls back quickly when Street asks, âHey, can I be the godfather?â
âOver my dead body,â Hondo answers lowly.
âI feel like weâre interrupting something,â you whisper to Deacon.
âI love you,â Deacon replies.
âI love you, too. And if this baby is anywhere near as sweet as you, everyone here is going to love them, too.â
âWe'll love Cookie, you mean,â Street calls.

Forever Young Part 3
Hey guys, welcome back! With all the 1 million word celebration stuff going on I haven't had much time to work on much, especially with a migraine that lasted three days last week, so I'm whittling down my backlog. But that's what it's for, so have no fear.
Once I have the 1 million words stories done, I'll be able to get back to work on the other stories.
In this the kids are fed and put down for naps and Steve does something unexpected.
Part 1 Part 2
~
Once all the kids had been fed and cleaned up, they decided to divide and conquer. Lucas and Mike would watch the kids, while everyone else worked on what might have caused the regression in the first place.
âI can tell it is not Upside Down related,â El said with a extreme confidence as they gathered around the pool to talk so they didnât disturb the kids.
Will chewed his lip and nodded. âI agree. Iâd feel it if it was. There is something else happening here, we just need to figure out what happened.â
âThey had their movie night last night,â Dustin said, rubbing his chin. âI know because I tried to get Eddie to take me to the library last night, but he wouldnât budge.â
âDonât they usually all sleep over together when they do that?â Max asked cocking her head to the side.
âNot always,â Will said, shaking his head. âLike if one or more of them have to work, theyâll go their separate ways.â
âShit!â Dustin said, leaping to his feet. âWho works where today? We need to call them in sick or theyâll get fired!â
âSteve will have it on his calendar,â El said tilting her head to the side thoughtfully.
They all dashed into the house and slid into the kitchen.
âIt looks like only Nancy and Robin!â Will cried as he scanned for todayâs date. âMax you call and act all stuffy like youâre sick.â
Max nodded and went over to Steveâs roll-a-dex and looked up both numbers. She quickly put on the best performance of her life.
Twice.
When she had finished with family video, they all slumped to the floor.
âIâve only given us two extra days,â Max said, bringing her knees up to her chest. âHopefully that will be enough.â
They all nodded.
Suddenly Mike cried out, âGuys get in here now!â
All four of them lurched to their feet and scrambled for the living room.
âWhatâs wrong?â Dustin asked, panicked.
Mike pointed to Eddie and Steve on the floor.
âI donâtââ Max said rolling her eyes.
âShhh!â Lucas hissed, cutting her off.
âYou like bats?! Thatâs so cool!â Little Eddie was saying. âEveryone tells me that they canât be my favorite because theyâre so creepy.â
Little Steve was coloring on Little Eddieâs right arm. âI think theyâre cute. Theyâre like flying mice and I love mice. My mom wonât let me have any because sheâs afraid of them. But I keep telling her that field mice that try to get into the house and fancy mice that are use for pets are different.â
âThey are?â Eddie asked, eyes sparkling with excitement.
âI still donâtââ Max huffed, putting her hands on her hips.
But again she was cut off, this time by Mike. He pointed to what Little Steve was drawing on Little Eddieâs arm.
âHoly shiââ Dustin stopped himself. âCrap.â
Little Steve was almost done with his drawing. He had drawn four of the five bats that made up Eddieâs tattoo on his forearm.
Will walked up to them and crouched down next to Little Steve. âThat looks really neat, Stevie. What made you decide on bats?â
Little Steve frowned as he finished the last bat. It wasnât neat or exactly like Eddieâs tattoo, but there were five of them of varying sizes.
âI like bats!â Little Eddie said brightly. âHe asked if he could draw on me. Mama never lets me draw on myself and when I visit Uncle Wayne he says he has to follow her rules or at least make sure I wash them off before I go home.â
âThatâs great, Eddie,â Will said with a pained smile. âYou like to draw?â
Little Eddie nodded.
âIt just felt right,â Little Steve said softly, stroking the newly colored bats on Eddieâs arm. He looked up at Will, his eyes welling up. âDid I do something wrong?â
Will shook his head. âNo, Stevie. You didnât do anything wrong. I was just curious about why you chose the bats.â
âHis arm looked funny without them,â Little Steve whispered.
Little Eddie cocked his head to the side. âI like it! Itâs like my Daddy! He has tattoos too! Though his are like daggers and stuff.â
âThatâs cool,â Little Steve said, brightening up for the first time since he was found by Dustin. âMy dad thinks that people who get tattoos are bad people, but that canât be right, because Henry the butcher has tattoos that he got while he was in the army and heâs the nicest guy!â
Will was starting to see why Steveâs parents might have decided he wasnât worth having around if he was already choosing to see people as individuals not blanket concepts that could be reviled against at the tender age of five.
âThatâs good, Stevie,â Lucas said with a sigh.
âMy dad says stuff like that too,â Little Nancy said, cocking her head to the side. âBut my mom just rolls her eyes and tells me later that we have to be nice to other people. Especially after my little brother is born. I have to be extra special nice to him.â
Mikeâs lip quivered. He wasnât one hundred percent sure where in Nancyâs toddler years she was, but now he did.
âIâm going to have a little brother, too!â Little Jonathan cried, raising his hand. âHeâs name is going to be William after my grandfather!â
Will looked behind him with a smile on his face. âYou are going to be the best big brother. I can tell.â
Little Jonathan beamed up at him. âIâll fight Dad if I have to. Iâll be so big and strong so I could protect him!â
Will stood up and walked over to him. He gently cupped Little Jonathanâs cheek. âYou donât have to do that, let your mom handle your dad, just be there for him and be understanding, okay?â
Little Jonathan nodded.
âI think itâs nap time,â Mike said, voice cracking and fighting back tears. âCome on. The girls can sleep in one room and the boys in Steveâs room.â
Little Eddie crossed his arms and pouted. âIâm too big for naps! Iâm the first grade and everything!â
âDo you think that you could play quietly while the others slept?â Dustin asked, skeptically raising one eyebrow.
âYes.â
âNo way!â Little Nancy huffed, mirroring Little Eddieâs pose. âIf he doesnât have to nap, then I donât either!â
And suddenly all the kids were protesting the nap. Mike squeezed his eyes shot for a moment before going over and kneeling in front of her.
âNancy,â he began. âHeâs older than you. The older you get, the less sleep you need to grow up. So Eddieâs little body can stay up easier than yours can.â
Little Nancy frowned. âHeâs not older than I am!â she protested, grasping at straws.
âHeâs six, Nance,â Dustin huffed rolling his eyes. âThatâs two years older than you.â
âIâm six!â she insisted, stomping her foot.
Mike smirked, he had this one on lock. âUh-uh,â he said wagging his finger. âThatâs a lie and liars get what?â
Little Nancyâs eyes went wide. She leaned forward and whispered. âWho told you about the naughty chair?â
Mike just grinned. âSo the choice is yours. The naughty chair or a nap.â
Little Nancy pouted and stomped her foot, not answering.
âChair it is then,â and he reached out for her hand.
She snatched it back and then marched to the door. âWell, where is this extra room, Iâm supposed to nap in?â
Max hurried up to her. âFollow me. Come on, Robbie.â She held out her hand and the other little girl sighed heavily but trotted up to Max to take her hand.
Max lead them to room on the other side of the hall and tucked them in.
Mike turned to Little Steve and Little Jonathan and clapped his hands. âCome on, boys. Nap time for you too.â
Little Steve looked up at him a moment deciding if it was worth arguing that he was older too. But Mike met him head on, never flinching or blinking.
Finally Little Steve gave it up as a lost cause and with a heavy, put upon sigh, he caves. âIâm guessing the same room I woke up in and where Wayne put me?â
Lucas cocked his head at his tone. âWait, do you not want to sleep in that room?â
Little Steve rolled his eyes. âDuh.â
The boys looked at each other in confusion before El snapped, âItâs because the room scared him! I wouldnât want to go back to a room where I woke up not knowing where I was or where my parents were, and hid the closet either.â
âMe either,â Little Jonathan said softly, taking Little Steveâs hand.
âOkay,â Dustin said, rearing his head back in shock. âSo where do we put them instead?â
They all thought for a moment.
âThere is a little room in the basement,â Lucas said snapping his fingers. âActually it looks like almost whole other house down there, man. Thereâs a bathroom and a kitchen and even a game room, but most importantly a bedroom. We can put them to sleep there. The bedroom is right by the stairs so we can hear them if they need anything!â
Everyone agreed to that and soon enough Little Jonathan and Little Steve were out like a light.
Lucas came thundering up the stairs, but Max shushed him. He opened his mouth to ask, but she elbowed him and pointed at the floor where Little Eddie was supposed to be coloring.
He was slumped over his coloring book in a heap, snoring away.
Will shook his head and grabbed a throw pillow from the sofa and tucked Little Eddieâs head under it. Then Mike came over with one of the afghans Steve kept by the love seat for movie nights, and draped it over him.
âNow we need to figure out whatâs happening and why,â Dustin said with his hands on his hips.
âAnd how the hell did Steve know about the bats on Eddieâs arm?â Max said, crossing her arms. âLike itâs clear they donât recognize each other or us, so how did he know about the bat tattoo?â
Lucas rubbed his chin thoughtfully. âIt doesnât make sense.â
âAnd why Eddie?â Dustin groused. âWhy not Nancy or Robin? Or hell, me? Because heâs known us longer than heâs known Eddie.â
âYeah,â Will said and then pulled his backpack on to his lap. âLetâs keep note of whenever that happens, to see if we can find a pattern.â
âThatâs a good idea, Will,â Lucas said. âAlso we need to figure what happens if this goes on for more than a couple of days. Because they all have jobs and responsibilities that if they go without doing for too long will get them into serious trouble.â
âWhich means telling more than Wayne,â El agreed. âI do not want to call Dr. Owens. Especially since we know it is not Upside Down related, but perhaps he knows more about this sort of thing than we do.â
âFirst off,â Max said, tossing her hair over her shoulder. âWe do not need all of us watching the kids, I felt mostly useless.â
Mike nodded. âAs much as it pains me to say this, but I think it should be me and Lucas. We know the most about taking care of kids.â
Lucas sighed but agreed. âSad but true. Which means you four are going to have to do some research. Try to figure out what they watched. If they smoked weed or drank and what the combination might have been to cause this.â
âThe scientific method!â Dustin cried with a grin. âYouâve got it!â
El and Max shared a glance and rolled their eyes.
âWe should split it up further,â Will said, from behind his notebook. âEl and Max reach out to Dr. Owens and find out if this has happened before while Dustin and I play detectives and figure what happened last night.â
Everyone agreed and then they all put their hands in a circle.
âWeâve got this!â Lucas cried and they all roared back, âHell yeah!â

concept designs for the zombie apocalypse au i'm working on - pt. 2 (small au details under the cut regarding their wardrobe)
---
max's design
takes off her jean jacket during supply runs / fights - used to be billy's jacket
signature weapon is a sawblade baseball bat - was taught how to swing from billy but the bat was modified by dustin
lucas' design
has started wearing jackets less and switched to dress shirts - the jackets were getting in the way of his new shoulder holster
signature weapon is a crossbow / revolver - the best marksman of the group and most knowledgeable with guns (his dad taught him everything as a war veteran) can really use anything!
dustin's design
found his vest off of some dead biker guy, thought it looked sick, and hasn't taken it off since - he puts pins on it to personalize it
no real signature weapon because he tends to stick away from fighting, more support - he knows basic fighting skills but is a beast with his crafted weapons (e.g. bomb traps, molotovs, etc)
is the pack mule when it comes to supply runs - he stays with mike and will to scout but brings a heavy backpack with possible backup supplies / weapons if need be
---
other notes: wanted to share that the apocalypse starts in 2019 while the kids were born in 2015. the first arc of the story takes place in apocalyptic 2028 and so on (their current designs are for arc 3). reason? i wanted them to experience some of the music and technology up to the 21st century :] i'll make a more official story thing later! maybe i'll write something for this au or draw a comic? idk my creative writing skills are pretty weak but we'll never know until we try LMAO
#if you can guess what character i drew inspo from for dustin's outfit i'll give you a big smooch on the cheek#stranger things#dustin henderson#max mayfield#lucas sinclair#lumax#the party#byler#<- just so people see it... ik people don't scour those other tags LMAO#st apoc au#sammi's art

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
Realistically, Steve knows the band wonât hang around Chicago forever. He knows theyâre out promoting a new album; knows theyâll have to move on and that Eddie has to go with them. It doesnât stop him from wanting Eddie to stay; to live in the quick familiarity heâs built within Steveâs little found family.
Eddie and Robin seem to have already created their own secret language, all gestures and movement and eye contact Steve picks up on but canât quite read. Heâs already picking on the Party like heâs known them their whole lives; ruffling Dustinâs hair, elbowing Mike, throwing his arm around Willâs shoulders, and giving Lucas little shoves.Â
Itâs easy; so easy to get caught up in how charismatic Eddie is. Steve has a hard time keeping his eyes off him, and Eddie knows. He keeps making comments, throwing winks in Steveâs direction, seeing right through every wall heâs ever built around himself and Steve is caught between being obsessed with it and terrified.Â
He stops drinking after the one beer, worried heâll make things weird if he gets anywhere near tipsy, opting to stay as far away from the possibility as he can. If anyone notices, they donât comment.
Lucas is chatting animatedly with Jeff, Max sitting close by, twisting braids into Elâs hair. Dustin, Mike and Will appear to be grilling Gareth and Freak about dungeon and dragon campaigns Eddie used to run. Nancy has her arm looped through Robinâs, but her attention is on the phone in her hands, as Eddie and Robin talk about what touring is like.
âWhere else are you going on this tour?â She asks as Steve tunes back into the conversation.
âThis isnât really a tour, we just havenât been on the road in a while and we just stopped the album, so we lined up a few shows to get our feet wet before we hit the road for real this summer. One more show out in LA on Tuesday, then weâre done until May, for now.â Eddie explains.
âWeâre in LA on Thursday!â Robin exclaims, and Steveâs stomach drops because, yeah. LA on Thursday. He trains his eyes on the glass in front of him, not willing to actually look at anyone theyâre around.Â
âWe could totally meet up again if you guys are able to swing it?â Freak offers, and Steve forces a little smile onto his face and nods.
âWe can figure it out later,â Eddie says after a few beats, and Steve is grateful for how the conversation rolls onto the next topic. When he finally looks back up, though, Eddieâs still looking his way. Steve hits him with what he hopes comes off as a reassuring smile, but it doesnât seem to pay off the way he hopes.
Once the tab is closed and the staff is tipped well, Steve catches Eddieâs elbow on their way out the door. âI would like to meet up in LA, if youâre interested. I didnât mean to get weird about it, itâs⌠Iâve been in my head a bit about that game since it was announced.â
âOh, hey, no worries. Weâre in LA the whole week, then weâre heading home. So no pressure, honest.â Eddie hooks his hand over Steveâs softly.
âWell, we should get in Wednesday, but we could totally do something after the game or even Friday?âÂ
Eddie smiles and nods, patting over Steveâs hand. âText me about it.â
âI can do that. How much longer are you guys in town for, anyway?â Steve asks.
âAh, the dreaded question comes,â Eddieâs playful, and it makes Steveâs face heat up. âWeâve got just under another 24 hours in the Windy City before hitting the road again.â
âOh,â It pulls his chest in a way he wasnât expecting, in a way that shouldnât be happening for a rockstar he was adjacently aware of in high school. âAre you busy tomorrow?â
âHarrington,â Eddieâs teasing again, and it does nothing to help the blush on Steveâs face. âYou canât possibly miss me this much when I havenât even left yet.â
âShut up,â Steve shoves him away then, crossing his arms over his chest with a pout, only for Eddie to pull him in with an arm around the shoulder.
âWe can grab brunch or something? We leave around 8 to avoid rush hour, so Iâll have to be in the bus by 6, or Iâd say dinner.â
âBrunch works for me.âÂ
~~~~
The trip back to the hotel doesnât go as Eddie expects; everyone is silently chatting amongst themselves, nodding and tapping along to the music and not causing a scene. He almost points it out, but elects not to bring unwarranted bullying upon himself instead. The guys had been giving him shit about Steve near constantly, so this was a nice change of pace after the last few days.
There was actually quiet as he made his way back to his room. A hot shower finally restored warmth to his bones the hockey arena had stolen, and he was drying his hair when he heard his phone vibrate with a text notification.
Steve: anything you're craving for brunch tomorrow so I can pick a place?
Itâs practically too easy to flirt with Steve; he sets up lines without even seeming to realize. But Eddie still canât get a real gauge on how Steve feels about the flirting, so he sidesteps the easy pass he could have made about Steve being enough of a meal, in favor of actually answering.
Eddie: French toast?
The next series of texts come before Eddie even moves his hands back to the towel over his hair.
Steve: sick, Iâll pick you up around 10:45
Steve: you mentioned going home, did you mean like, back to Hawkins?
Eddie twists his hair up in the towel, and lays down on the side of the bed he doesnât sleep on before firing off an answer.
Eddie: nah, Iâve got a place in Nashville and no reason to go back to Hawkins anymore. My uncle moved to Indy, so thatâs usually as close as I get.
Steve: any reason you moved to Nashville?
Eddie: are we playing 20 questions?
Steve: sorry.
Eddie bites his lip, and only hesitates for a moment before flipping over onto his belly and hitting the FaceTime button. Steve answers on the second ring, looking embarrassed, but Eddie doesnât let him get a word in.
âMy mom was born and raised in Memphis, but she always told me her favorite city was Nashville. I was there with her a few times when I was little and sheâd just, like, light up. And music is so heavily engraved into every inch of the city, itâs hard to not find inspiration everywhere you turn. So. I bought a place in Nashville the minute I had enough saved up, and itâs kind of my home base now.â Eddie explains, watching as Steveâs face softens and he relaxes into his chair listening to Eddieâs answer. âDo I get to ask a question now?â
âI really wasnât trying to be annoying, â Steve looks ready to keep going with an apology, but Eddie cuts him off.
âWhy do you play hockey?â It stops Steve dead in his tracks, and he genuinely looks confused for a moment. Eddie almost offers to drop the topic, but Steve fumbles his way into an answer.
âMy, uh. My dad wanted me to play before I was even born. Because he played. Professionally for a few years when I was growing up, then he went on to coach.â Steve explains, and it sounds a little rehearsed. Eddieâs sure itâs something that comes up often if his father played and coached. âGotta keep the Harrington legacy alive, I guess.â
There was a bite to Steveâs words that wasnât lost on Eddie. âYou donât sound too thrilled about it.â
Eddie can see Steve working over how he wants to answer before he shrugs and sighs. âBecause itâs all a show for him. The part we donât talk about is how I got hurt and benched most of my senior season and he cut me off when I didnât get full rides. Convinced me it was better to not go to college at all, despite the other scholarship offers, than to not get promised a spot on the ice. Convinced me to self-sabotage so I had to fight tooth and fucking nail to get into the league at all.â Steve pauses, then, and lets out a quiet laugh. âSorry, thatâs so unbelievably whiny of me. I love getting to play professionally, and I donât take the opportunity for granted.â
âNot whiny. Dads can be the fucking worst.â Eddie offers, gently, and is grateful when Steve doesn't press on that particular bruise.
Instead, he takes his turn to ask a different question. âWhy music?â
âThis is lame, but the answer is once again my mom.â Eddie rolls his eyes at himself, but he smiles. âShe was a musician. There were always instruments around and music was always playing and we traveled for her to perform. I knew my whole life I wanted to be a musician like her, but it wasnât until after she died that I figured out that songwriting⌠telling stories and painting pictures with words and melodies and making people feel somethingâŚâ Eddie trails off, lost in the thought.
âIâm sorry you lost her. It sounds like you enjoyed your childhood with her.â Steve offers, hopes it doesnât sound like a forced nicety, but Eddie smiles and his nerves ease.
âShe was a force to be reckoned with. Firing on all cylinders at once, chaos and home bundled into one.â Eddieâs soft a quiet for a moment, and Steve appreciates the silence by taking in how relaxed the other is to be talking about his feelings; itâs a refreshing break from many of his experiences with teammates or opponents who donât know how to get emotional in a healthy way. Eventually, though, Eddie clears his throat. âAnyway. Back to 20 questions,â
âI wasnât trying to start a game, really, I just⌠like talking to you,â Steve admits around a blush, tucking his chin into the collar of his shirt in an effort to hide the shade of his cheeks, but Eddieâs smile says his cover is blown.
âANYWAY!â He announces louder, then taps at his chin. âFavorite and least favorite teams to play and why, go.â
âIâm not a dog.â Steve laughs but thinks about his answer anyway. âFavorite is probably the Flyers in Philly. Their fans are absolutely brutal, and their mascot is hilariously terrifying.â
âI have seen many a Gritty TikTok, so I completely understand,â Eddie gives him a few beats before he prompts. âLeast favorite?â
âThe Kings. LA. Billy Hargrove.â
âTheâŚ, what the fuck? How many guys from Hawkins are professional hockey players?â Eddie asks, because honestly, how had he not known there was more than Steve?
âHeâs technically from LA, which is why he went back, thank God.â Steve mumbles, before dropping his head back against the wall behind him. âBut, for whatever itâs worth, thereâs me, Billy, and Tommy Hagan in the league.â
âWell isnât that a fun bunch to surround yourself with,â Eddie muses out loud. Tommy and Billy were two of the biggest assholes Eddie had ever met, and it sounded like Steve wasnât too fond of the other pair either.
âI actuallyâŚâ Steve trails off, before trying again. âI was going to invite you guys to come to the LA game, but Iâm really not sure it would be a good idea, so Iâm⌠Iâm actually going to ask you guys not to come, if thatâs not too much of a dick move? I can get you tickets to literally any game you want for the rest of the season, just. I donât think itâs worth it to get Billy started, and if heâs heard any of the press about us, Iâm already going to hear it even if youâre not there.â
âHomophobe extraordinaire still, then?â Eddie guesses, and Steve chokes out a laugh, before covering his mouth and holding up a finger to ask for a moment to compose himself.
âHe's⌠a lot of things.â Is the response Steve opts for, but Eddie can tell thereâs more there. Whatever the two of them are doing, it doesnât feel like Steve is ready to elaborate, so Eddie moves on.Â
âI think itâs your turn.â
~~~~
Nothing changes after Corroded Coffin leave Chicago, though. Not in the ways Eddie had expected, at least.
Steve still texts him throughout the day, answers his Facetimes whenever heâs available. Eddie makes him the playlist he promised, and Steve gives feedback on which songs he likes and which ones he really doesnât, after Eddie promises to not take Steveâs opinions personally. Which, to be fair, he tries really hard not to.
The concert in LA comes and goes, and Steve seems to send him every TikTok he comes across from the show. Itâs a refreshing break, as every few videos in Eddieâs feed are of him cheering for Steve at the game, or Steve watching from sidestage in Chicago.Â
A text from Robin eventually confirms their arrival in LA, and Steve and Eddie make plans to meet up after the game. Since Steve had expressed concern about Eddie going, he decides to just watch from the bar they agree to meet at. Televised games make it easier to track the puck, but Eddie decides he likes being there in person better.
Eddieâs sipping absently on his beer and in the time it takes him to look down at a text from Chrissy, several of the people around him react to something. Eddie looks around to make sure someone in the bar hadnât passed out. When he looks back at the screen, absolute mayhem has broken out on the ice. The refs are trying to separate players from one another, and Eddieâs scanning through the numbers on each Blackhawks jerseys before he finally spots Steve, slightly off to the side from everyone else. The camera pans away from him, zeroing in on the fight, now between a Blackhawks defenseman and none other than Billy Hargrove.Â
Billyâs helmet and gloves are off, teeth shining with blood as he grins like a psycho and starts to skate in Steveâs direction. One of the refs pulls him back, though, escorting him into the penalty box while another Kings player gathers his helmet, stick and gloves and clears them to the bench.Â
The camera finally pans back to Steve, who is now sitting with his back against the boards. Heâs got a gloved covering the lower half of his face, but his white jersey is covered in blood. A ref and the Blackhawks goalie are kneeling on either side of him as someone else speaks with him. The camera zooms in as the TV crews work to make out what is happening, just in time for Steve to lower his hand and shows off a gnarly gash along the side of his face. He leans forward a little and spits out blood onto the ice, and the TV jumps to the announcers in the booth.Â
The volume is off, but they show a slow-motion replay of the few moments Eddieâd missed; Steve passes the puck off to another player on his team, just before Billy slams into his side. The impact sends both of them into the boards and down onto the ice. Billy swings his stick around and cracks Steve in the face with the blade heel. Steve reacts, throwing his whole arm into Billyâs face, before a sea of white Blackhawks jerseys sweep in and suddenly Billyâs a few feet away, with players from both teams piled up.
Eddieâs hand hovers over his phone; has no idea what to do in this situation. Texting Steve is useless; it would likely be hours, if not days, before he even thinks about looking at his phone. He doesnât want to bother anyone, but heâs⌠well, heâs stressed. Even if Steve isnât interested in him the way Eddieâs interested in Steve, theyâve still built a weird little friendship and that was an awful lot of blood.
So, Eddie ends up firing off a text to Robin. Itâs just a simple 'let me know if thereâs anything I can do,' but his phone lights up with a call immediately.
âHow bad is it?â
âIâm not back with him yet, but just⌠meet us at the hospital, if you can?â She asks. While her voice waivers a bit, sheâs calmer than Eddie expected her to be.
âIâll be right there.â He agrees, hangs up and exits the bar before the game even returns from commercial break.

kisses at the arcade
summary: reader and steve drive dustin to the arcade⌠and have some of their own fun.
a part 2 to the previous title-less fic that yall loved sm with henderson!reader x steve harringtonÂ
you can find part 1 here, and part 3 here
a/n: so i sent the first part of this to my bestie and she was like âso when do i get a part 2??â and now here we are with a part 2! rlly it is all thanks to her, because not only did she help me make up my mind to make a part 2, but she also helped me completely construct every bit of this!!!! (did i mention sheâs never watched ST???) sheâs literally amazing so big thank you to my queeeeen!!!!
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
dustin charged into the living room slightly out of breath, his âthinking capâ baseball hat smushed over his unruly hair. âmom! can steve drive me to the arcade? mike, will, max and lucas are going.â he panted.Â
his sister looked at him from her book while she sat on the couch at the mention of steve. she swallowed back a smile that heâd go out of his way to take her brother to the arcade.Â
their mom cleared her throat before she answered. âyou can go if your sister does, just to keep and eye on you.âÂ
dustin looked at his sister with pleading eyes. âplease go, weâre gonna try and beat maxâs records.â he said.Â
âwhile max is there?â she asked, closing the book and placing it onto the coffee table gently. dustin nodded. âsure, i donât wanna miss the look on your guysâ faces when she stays with her top score.â her words made dustin scoff while she walked off to her bedroom to grab a sweater and her bag.Â
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
when steveâs red bmw made its appearance onto their driveway, dustin raced out the front door and his sister followed behind him slowly. she shivered from the early december air that nipped at her cheeks and nose, so she picked up her pace.Â
âyour sisters got the front tonight, henderson!â she heard steve tell dustin, to which he replied with a groan that sounded like betrayal. she looked at dustin with a smile and stuck out her tongue.Â
âreal mature.â dustin rolled his eyes while he climbed into the backseat.Â
she slipped into the passenger seat and flashed a bright smile at steve before he put the car into gear and began the drive to the arcade across town.Â
it was a short drive but after some light conversation and a fair amount of bickering between dustin and steve it felt a bit longer. by the time steve pulled into the parking lot dustin was out of the car and racing towards the arcade.Â
âwait until the car is in park next time!â his sister called from out the window before rolling it back up. she turned her face towards steve. âhi.â she smiled.Â
âhey.â he smiled back at her, the corners of his eyes creasing in a way that made her heart beat faster. she didnât know why.Â
he reached a hand across the gap between them to connect his palm with the side of her face. she leans into the touch, shifting in her seat to get closer, reaching her own hand to connect with the side of his neck.Â
he tried to contain his smile but what was the use if sheâs there to create it? steveâs hand slowly drifts down her arm, leaving goosebumps in his wake, which sheâd blame on the time of year if he asked, until his palm rested on her knee. the honey color in his irises were almost chased away from how his pupils were blown out.Â
his gaze shifted between both of her eyes as he whispered, âyou look beautiful tonight, you know that, right?â
she felt her face heat up at the compliment and her eyes shifted away from his for a brief second. âthank you.â her voice was a volume just above a whisper.
steve lifts his hand from her knee to hook his fingers beneath her chin, directing her face towards his. his tongue darts between his barely parted lips prior to leaning over the center console, gently connecting his lips with hers. the taste of her strawberry lipgloss made him smile.Â
the sound of her heartbeat was in her ears, making it hard to think of anything other than him and the way his soft lips slowly danced against hers rhythmically. her fingers tangled in his soft chestnut hair while she pulled away to breathe, eyes still closed and her forehead to his. âwe should go inside. the kids are probably wondering where we are.â she didnât want to say this but she knew that keeping an eye on the kids was the best idea, considering that theyâd still be paranoid due to the events from a month ago.
steve knew she was right but he was feeling greedy, only wanting her all to himself right now. âtheyâll be okay without us, wonât they?â he wondered quietly as he reached for her hip, smoothing his thumb over the fabric of her clothes covering it. steve pulled her closer to him, being mindful of the console separating them.Â
with labored breaths and a butterfly filled stomach she nodded, giving in to him. âwhat if they come out and see us?â she asked with a quick pull away from their proximity. her eyebrows were pinched together, creating a tiny wrinkle between them that steve wanted to smooth away with his thumb.
steve brings her back in and tilted his head to the side. âthey wonât, baby, i promise.â he gave her a reassuring grin, making sure she mirrored it before once again connecting their lips together.Â
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
dustin angrily shifted the joystick and pressed the buttons of the arcade machine, trying to make more progress and wrack up the most points so that heâd finally beat maxâs score on dig-dug. as he played, lucas, mike, will and max huddled around his back to watch the screen with nervous anticipation.Â
âlook out!â lucas exclaimed, pointing at an enemy just before it killed dustinâs character.Â
the game made the animated sound signifying that he lost and dustin kicked the machine. âson of a bitch.â he sighed, shoving a hand into his coat pocket to try and pull more coins for another round; his pocket was empty. âanyone have any quarters i can barrow?â he asked the group. they all shook their heads, wanting to keep theirs for themselves.Â
âask your sister for some, iâm sure sheâd have some.â will suggested with a smile. everyone else nodded in agreement, finding the idea a good one.Â
dustin turned around, staring at the bench beside the front doors where both his sister and steve should have been. âhey, has anyone seen my sister or steve?â he looked back at the group. everyone turned their heads towards the bench at once. âthey arenât there, dumbasses, thatâs why iâm asking.â he clarified.Â
mike shrugged. âmaybe theyâre still outside?â he sounded bored at the fact they were trying to solve the mystery of dustinâs missing sister and steve harrington.Â
dustin nodded. âprobably.â he said before running towards the doors, dodging away from other kids. everyone followed on his heels all the way outside into the cold until they all stopped outside the red bmw which was still running.Â
dustin reached for the passenger door handle without even looking inside, his only concern at that moment was quarters. âhey, do you have any- what the hell are you doing?â he exclaimed, stepping back with the door still ajar.
his sister and steve pulled away from each otherâs lips in surprise, both staring at dustinâs wide eyes and disgusted expression first before noticing all his friends staring as well. steve shot dustin a nervous smile while she wiped the mixture of their saliva and her lipgloss away from her mouth.
âgiving mouth to mouth.â max mumbled and caused the group snicker with laughter.Â
dustin harshly nudged lucas, the closest to him, as a sign for him to shut up; lucas did after a small protest of how the shove hurt. âdo you have any quarters? i spent mine already.â dustin reached for and snatched away his sisters bag off the floor beside her feet.
she stole it back from him. âhey! donât dig through my things.â she said firmly, going for her wallet. âhow many do you need?â her question made the group smile.Â
dustin shrugged. âtwenty for what i just witnessed.â he muttered. she shot him a glare. âi mean- just three dollars worth.â he reiterated with an innocent smile.Â
she dug around for quarters and handed them all to dustin when she found the amount he wanted. the group took that as a sign to go back inside since they began to grumble about the cold. dustin tried to follow but his sister called him back.
âplease donât tell mom, okay?â she asked with pleading eyes. dustin nodded which made her sigh in relief.Â
âyou owe me though. and you,â he pointed at steve. âyou owe me as well.â steve nodded in understanding which made dustin walk back towards the arcade, slamming the car door before he left.Â
she looked back at him, bottom lip held between her teeth anxiously. steve frowned at her expression and leaned towards her. âhey, itâs okay.â his hand smoothed over her hair slowly, the curls bouncing back once his hand brushed them over. âmaybe it is time to yâknow⌠tell people?â he shrugged. his hand settled lightly on her shoulder.Â
her teeth let go of her lip so she could speak. âyeah⌠i just wish he didnât have to find out like that.â her concern had steve nodding with adamant agreement. she looked away from him in thought.Â
he dropped his head to the side as his hand guided her face and eyes back to his. âitâs all gonna work out for us, okay? you donât have to worry.â the kindness in his eyes made her feel more sure about the situation so she nodded in advance to leaning forward to press her lips against his again. she just wanted to be extra sure, and he kissed back with a gentle assurance.
it was going to work out for them.Â
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ

we thought love was something (we weren't meant to find)
ďš season two of "come home"
as you approach a year since will's disappearance, things seem to be back to how they were. you still have jonathan and the boys, hawkins is boring again, and you and steve harrington aren't really friends. you convince yourself that it's fine, but time can't heal all wounds, and you sure as hell have your fair share of them. when will starts having episodes and your brother hides a literal monster from you, junior year becomes a lot more painful than it already was. (and because you can never win, steve gets dragged into it). (more complicated feelings arise). (as usual).
episode one: MADMAX - what does steve fear more ? you or the plague ? currently it's you, some guy with an awful mullet stares you down in the parking lot (gross), nancy invites you to a party from your nightmares, and you become an official unlicensed therapist for will. yay for junior year !
episode two: trick or treat, freak - you and nancy have a bonding session in the library (kinda hot tbh), billy gives jonathan and steve a common cause to unite on: Protect Y/N, you're a chauffeur to a very sad steve harrington, and dustin uses will's trauma to his advantage.
episode three: the pollywog - you lecture jonathan about daddy issues and then have an intellectual debate about healthy relationships, you play Mr. Love Dr with Steve, nancy and jonathan go on a sick side quest (and actually inform you this time !), meanwhile: you're about to put a leash on your damn brother.
episode four: will the wise - jonathan is gone for one day and suddenly all hell breaks loose, your hesitant friendship with steve is already rocky (thanks billy) but steve is hot when he's angry tbh, you become a couple's counselor to lucas and max (sorry dustin), and you're now officially the world's worst cat owner ever. and babysitter. but what else is new ?
episode five: dig dug - you and dustin bury a body and con your mother into fleeing town, great sibling bonding time ! you play hockey with a monster, dustin gets ghosted by his friends, and now it's your turn to kidnap steve (technically dustin does, but you don't stop him) who later gives you some terrifying realizations.
episode six: the spy - dustin and steve haggle a butcher, you throw some meat at steve and then have a weird conversation about love, you stop dustin from becoming an incel, and then you wrestle some demodogs like any real woman would. side note: steve is hot protecting the kids.
episode seven: the mind flayer - jonathan is back and has a lot of questions and you have even more for him, the gang gets back together and ties will to a chair, you tell the kid a story to distract him from his demons, steve is a confused mess but at least youre with him, and someone makes a surprise appearance (her name rhymes with shell).
episode eight: the gate - you encourage nancy to take your place (everyone is shocked), you and steve are the newest babysitters in town, billy ruins things as always, tunnels are weird when youre concussed, you remind jonathan of an old promise, and when the snowball comes you make your own promise with steve that you know you can keep.
â set between seasons 2 and 3
ďš episode nine: the fall - surprise ! life still carries on even with minor brain damage from constant concussions :( on the bright side, you and the gang all become homies. meanwhile, steve grapples with the warm fuzzies and parental issues before his worst nightmare happens: you meet robin. the horrors !

Let's Analyze - Every Time Someone Says "Gay"
Warning: homophobia and use of slurs. F-slur will be censored.
One thing I've noticed in Stranger things is that they typically try to avoid saying things outright. I've talked a bit on this blog on their use of "Show Don't Tell." This applies to relationships most often - as our core relationships - the ones we expect to last - typically avoid exchanging I love yous, and tend to show, rather than tell, the audience how they feel about the other person.
This concept of showing rather than telling translates in a big way to our queer characters. Neither Robin nor Will openly calls themselves a lesbian or gay, and no one explicitly refers to them as gay either (outside of bullies and abusers). However on my most recent watch through I couldn't help but notice just how many times the show references homosexuality.
Season 1:
Season 1 we see the most uses of gay words, four total. Three of these reference Will, and one being a reference to Jonathan.
EPISODE 1:
Joyce: Lonnie used to say he was queer, called him a f*g
EPISODE 3:
Troy: I hate to break it to you toothless, but he's not in danger. He's dead. That's what my dad says. He said he was probably killed by some other queer.
EPISODE 4:
Troy: Besides, what's there to be sad about anyway? Will's in fairyland now, right? Flying around with all the other little fairies. All happy and gay!
EPISODE 6:
Steve: You know what, Byers? I'm actually kind of impressed. I always took you for a queer, but I guess you're just a little screw-up like your father.
Season 1 tends to use homophobia as a general way to show who the mean guys are here - not our scientists, or corrupt officials, but our human antagonists.
Season 2:
EPISODE 8:
Billy's Father: So that's why you've been staring at yourself in the mirror like some f*ggot instead of watching your sister?
Like in Season 1, Season 2 uses homophobia to paint Billy's dad as the evil behind Billy's evil.
EPISODE 9:
Steve: Nancy?
This one I questioned if I should include it - because it's not an explicit reference to gay words. Steve is concussed here and momentarily mistakes Mike for his sister - but it's worth noting that Nancy is also a term used to call someone gay. Especially since this is in reference to Mike, I think this is a very smart a subtle way to allude to Mike's sexuality early on.
Season 3:
Season 3 differs from the first two seasons uses of gay words - instead of having other, more background characters call our main characters slurs and using gay as an insult, we have main characters outright stating, or being told, that they're being gay - but in a roundabout way.
EPISODE 3:
Mike: It's not my fault that you don't like girls!
EPISODE 7:
Steve: But... Tammy Thompson's a girl?
Robin: Steve...
Season 4:
This same idea is carried into the next mention at the start of season 4, where they talk about the possibility that Vickie likes girls.
EPISODE 1:
Steve: Do you know who pauses Fast Times at 53 minutes 5 seconds? People who like boobies!
After that we kind of go back to our old ways - but with a bit of a twist. Instead of a bigoted background character just being, the mentions start to become more casual and matter-of-fact.
EPISODE 3:
Russian: I am no fairy
There's a bit of a lack of judgement in this clip - the Russian here isn't offended so much as he's denying what he sees as a transaction for sexual favors, or possibly flirting. It's fairly neutral. He's simply saying - hey, I'm not the guy you need to be asking for that.
EPISODE 4:
Erica: Going out? I see he's taken a step down from Max...Chances are he's with your cheater boyfriend.
Here Erica implies that Jason is "going out" with Lucas in a different way - and I don't think she means it literally here (unless there's more to what Erica found under Lucas's bed that was so 'gross'...). I think she just can tell she already doesn't like Jason, and this is something she can say to get under his skin and get him to back off. Again, this seems like a neutral statement - not really judgmental.
So we see that homosexuality is mentioned at least once or twice per season. I think this serves two purposes throughout the course of the show.
To show the audience that the show in general disapproves of homophobia.
To keep homosexuality on our minds.
At the end of the day, Strange Things is not a show about being gay - it's not Heartstopper or Young Royals. It's an anthem for the outcasts, and queer characters have always been a part of that group of outcasts that the Duffers wanted to represent. I think to avoid this idea that these gay subplots "came out of nowhere" these terms being used throughout the show are just one part of the way they've tried to plant this idea that hey, maybe some of these characters are gay.

Part 3 (One of Us) of 'Never Took The Time (To Forget)' previously known as 'Hopper Adopts Steve But Make It Sad'
Part 1 (Hop fucks up), Part 2 (Pride and Prejudices: Joyce Edition), part 3, Part 4.1 (With a Capital 'P'), Part 4.2 (Robin's Boy), Part 5 (Man Of The Hour)
Here's a bit more for you filthy animals đ
Much like he's come to expect from the small soldiers these children have fashioned themselves into he's not surprised when they come pouring out of whichever of the twins' rooms they shoved themselves in like codependent sardines. He's not surprised by the looks of anger and disappointment and confusion. Claudia Henderson's kid -Dustin- looks on the edge of tears with a grim set to his mouth that reminds him of when the kid's mom is beyond words in her slow-burning fury. El and Will have matching looks of disappointed confusion.
What he's not expecting is the way Mike and the younger (usually more volatile) Sinclair are holding onto an incensed looking Lucas. Lucas who has always been the polite one when it came to addressing adults and the one to preach caution and thinking plans through. Lucas who has been quiet and withdrawn since Hop came back, spending his days at the edge of Party affairs when not helping in the rebuilding efforts around town or sitting at Max's bedside.
"What the fuck, Hopper?" The kid spits out and that seems to snap the rest of The Party into action. Will goes to join the two holding Sinclair back but Dustin starts near incoherently yelling in that screechy pitch only that kid seemed to be able to hit about bullshit cops and useless adults and to let Lucas go. "He idolized you, man! Would tell us all the time that you were 'one of the good ones' that if we ever needed anyone and he wasn't there, to find you. That you would take care of us because that's just what you did for people. Because you were good!"
"Lucas, chill out man." Mike pants though he's also glaring daggers at Hop.
This is where Joyce (god bless her) decides to step in. "Lucas, honey-" She says with her soft voice and big wet eyes and that warmth she seems to infuse into everything she touched. "It's complicated. There's some things you just don't understand and-"
"No! You two don't understand! Steve is GOOD. He's good and he cares and he takes care of everyone else and he always kept us safe." The kid seems to be losing some of his steam, pulling at his friends less and resigned to shaking in barely contained fury. "He gets hurt and he gets back up and he apologizes for taking a fall in the first place! He's just Good."
"I know he's been good to you kids and I appreciate that, I really do Lucas." Joyce says, her voice a little stronger, that steadiness returning. "Sometimes people in our lives can do bad things to others and we don't see it because we care about them and that's not always a bad thing. But we have to remember that the people who were wronged are allowed to be upset and that's normal to feel and-"
"You mean like Jonathan?" The room goes quiet. Will looks resigned but not surprised by Lucas' question but the rest of the kids look just as confused as him and Joyce. "Did you really think Steve broke his camera -in the school parking lot of all places- for the hell of it? Did you seriously never question it?"
Hop feels something twist in his gut. He had been so caught up in the search for Will and wrangling a frantic Joyce that he hadn't paid any attention to small-town squabbles like two teenagers having it out in the school parking lot, the destruction of personal property or what might have triggered it. He looks over the kids' heads to see Jonathan and his stoner buddy standing just outside his door. The friend looks confused but Jon is looking at his mom who hasn't noticed him yet like a man preparing himself for the gallows.
"Mom." Joyce's eyes snap from where they were locked on Lucas up to her oldest son. "Mom, I-"
"What are they talking about Jon?" It's quiet. Quiet and scared because everyone in the room knows that whatever secret reason Lucas (and maybe Will?) seems to be the only one to know Steve had for picking a fight isn't going to be good. Jonathan's mouth opens like he's going to say something but no words come out. "Honey, what did you do?"
"He took pictures of Steve and his friends the night Barbara Holland disappeared."
"Will?" all eyes except Lucas' (who is still glaring daggers at Hop) are on the two brothers. One scared and almost pleading the other disappointed and resolved.
"He hid in the bushes and took pictures of Steve and his friends with Nancy and Barbara. There were pictures of Barbara at the Harrington place before she died and he never told anyone. But there were also-" He takes a deep breath, closing his eyes like he can't look at his older brother who has hung his shaggy head under everyone's heavy gaze. "There were pictures of just Steve and Nancy. Alone together. In Steve's room."
There's a sharp gasp that he thinks came from Joyce but he's too busy watching the young man he's come to consider a son. His head is still lowered and his shoulders are curving in on themselves as he shakes off the hand his long-haired friend tries to place on his shoulder.
"Oh baby," Joyce's voice is wet again. A tone of horrified disappointment to it that Hop has only heard her use when talking to or about one other person. "Tell me you didn't."
"Then he-" Will clears his throat like this one is what gives him pause. "He was caught developing the pictures in the school's darkroom. All of the pictures. And he had zoomed in on Steve's window. Nancy was the center of the shot." The kid's eyes flit over to Mike (who is now turning an interesting shade of red as he glares at Jonathan) before he blushes and looks at the ground, "She uh-"
Lucas does not seem to share Will's newfound hesitance in the face of an enraged Mike Wheeler. "Most of the upperclassmen argue if she had a bra or not but they all seem to agree she didn't have a top."
"Oh my god." Everyone was frozen as Joyce began to crumble. "Oh my god." He reached out to catch her, her nails digging into his arm through his shirt sleeve as she stared unseeing at her oldest son.
Jonathan started forward. "Mom, I-" a hand in the middle of his chest stopped him. "Will, please, I need to-"
"Just stop, man." Lucas sighs. "You started this shit, you gotta deal with it before you hurt someone else besides Steve."
"I didn't mean to hurt Steve."
Hops feels himself frozen to the spot in a way he's not used to anymore these days. His mind is working overtime picking out all of the charges that could have been pressed even against a boy of 15/16 if any of the kids in Harrington's inner circle had told an actual adult about the situation. The veritable legal hell that would have been brought down on Joyce while searching for a son legally assumed dead.
"Is that what you told yourself when you helped Nancy cheat?" And it just kept getting worse.
Joyce gives off a whimper and the kids gathered make varied sounds of shock and disgust.
"They were broken up."
"Were they? Cause everybody at school and half the town seems to all know about you and Nancy disappearing together when Steve was still calling her his girlfriend and then you all showed back up to school, Steve beat to hell again and Nancy hanging all over you. The basketball team STILL talk about it."
He's heard enough. "Alright, that's it!" He yells out over the children yelling and Joyce demanding answers and Jonathan's friend trying to say something about there being some sort of explanation. "This doesn't help us help Steve."
Lucas shakes off the loose hold Erica and Mike still had on him and crosses his arms as he rolls back his shoulders and tilts his jaw up to fix him with a glare. The kid's stance is almost arrogant but Hop can't help but notice the way he rests his weight on his off side, his shoulders back and his posture straight without his chest puffing out ridiculously like Hop is used to from teenage boys gearing for a fight.
"I think you've helped enough, Hopper." It's quiet and biting and he lets himself have a moment of grief for the childhood these kids lost, and the fact that he's almost positive Lucas didn't pick up this easy confidence from anyone else in their monster fighting club but Steve. "You and Mrs. Byers want to play nice now cause you feel guilty and that's all well and good but what happens when Steve does something else you don't agree with without explanation? Or he and Jonathan or Nancy get in another fight? When we finally get rid of Vecna and the Upside Down for good? What happens when you don't feel guilty anymore?"
"I can't make any sort of promise you lot will believe. And lord knows I'm pretty shit at keeping them anyways. I just want to be able to try."
"He mourned you, you know. When we were told you didn't make it." That weight is back in his chest. "He held himself together around us but there were- there were moments we could tell. He and El really bonded over that. Over you. Over losing you."
"I didn't know."
"Of course you didn't. You didn't want to know."
"There's no way I can make you believe me. That I want to fix this."
"We want to, Hopper." Dustin butts in, placing a hand on Lucas' shoulder and limping up next to the other boy. "But from what you and Mrs. Byers were talking about... There's just a lot that makes a lot more sense and it doesn't inspire a lot of faith in either of you."
"We need to discuss this as a Party."
"Okay."
"That means letting us take care of it. Steve's one of us and you hurt him."
"I understand."
"So you and Mrs. Byers have got to wait till we say you can talk to Steve. That he's ready for it."
"Now, kids-"
"No they're right, Joyce. We fucked it up on our own and- and he trusts these little shits more than he trusts us right now. We've gotta do the same."
Joyce sighs, "Fine."
She's not happy about it and honestly neither is he. But if the last few years and his stint in a Russian gulag and the subsequent escape taught him anything it's maybe he needs to trust his people to do what they need to do.
The kids scurry back to whichever of the Twins' room they came from, led by a newly determined and involved Lucas and a furiously muttering Dustin. Jonathan and Joyce make their way to the kitchen and Hopper decides he's going to let them have that conversation in as much privacy as they can with a house as full as theirs.
Hopper sits in the living room, runs his hands through his hair that's finally growing out and pulls them down his face before resting his chin on steepled fingers. He hates sitting and waiting and relying on someone else for the next steps. But all he can think about is the sound Steve made. The look in his eyes. The pride in his voice the last time he heard him say, "My Hop."
That's it!
He stands up so fast his bad ankle protests and his knees pop. He limps to the front door, yelling out to the house that he has to go, has something to do. Calls out he has his walkie and that El needs to be ready on time. Then he's out the door.
Part 4.1
More coming soon! Hopefully! Work went from an active team of about 12 to 5, not including the managers we lost ssssooo... Yeah fun times. đ
So here's a tag-list, hope I didn't miss anyone. Feel free to yell at/with me in the comments or ask box. If you see your old tag in my list tell me your new one so I can fix it.

It's done! The outline forâ
âis below the cut. The goal of this project is to explore the following phenomena with as much context and nuance as I can manage, tracing our history over the past 15 years:
What about us, and what about Dan and Phil, drew in and continues to draw in a very specific audience. If they are a ranch metaphor, we are a pizza metaphor đĽđđŤśđť
Why we were Like Thatâ˘, by which I mean so parasocially invested in them that we became, at times, the most annoying people on the internet. Much of that reputation is undeserved, and the videos on the phandom to date have been strongly negative. So, uh, I guess I'm going to put my face on camera and (mostly) defend us.
Reblog, share in your Discord servers, reply, or send me messages/anon asks with feedback or resources if you have any! Especially if your experience being in this fandom community has been dramatically different from mine. There are TIT spoilers near the end of the outline, but I'm not tagging because certain individuals seem to be lurking over there. Thank you!
Chapters:
Full outline:
introduction
cold open
felt personally attacked by jonathan haidt's last press tour
showed up to the phrenaissance 11 months late
had an unexpectedly strong response to their new content, needed to find out why
what the hell are we doing here?
- phenomenology (academics are professionally insufferable) - research question 1: what drew the audience in? - research question 2: why were we Like That
what we're NOT doing here
- a strict content analysis or "wow we sucked" video - providing sources for things best left uncirculated, thank you
reflexivity (personal biases)
- american zillennial in public health - in the youtube audience by spring 2010 - lurking in the phandom on tumblr 2013-2015, back* since 2019 - fan behavior i did and did not engage in
(----): truly necessary background information, i swear
(pop) cultural trends, tech, and their intersection
- nerd/geek identity and the first online weirdos - broadcast tv & the music industry vs the internet - defining "emo" - blogging & vlogging - early internet comedy
broader social/economic trends
- so the U.S. economy collapsed in 2007 - a decade that sucked except for rom-coms and square enix games - the flip/slide phone + digital camera + mp3 player loadout
(05-8): early youtube and early phil
youtube: a great video uploader without a clear purpose
the content on the website
- crossposts, corporations, and creative/social outlets - omg guys it's amazing phil - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: justin bieber

(2010): is it "twenty-ten" or "two thousand ten?"
youtube is a platform about to explode in popularity
- the algorithm before it was The Algorithmâ˘, lost site features - let's take a trip through the wayback machine :3c - actual dan & phil content in 2010 - the green brothers found vidcon - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: darren criss

An ask abt nugget #5 for slick sunday in the same universe as my new year's birth nugget #4
The Munsons live in Chicago, Eddie both co-owns a landmark music store & co-founded a small record label tht is growing by the year. Steve is THRIVING as a stay at home mom who gets to write fun kid friendly fantasy novels on the side & has had a number of them printed to a resounding success with his latest being the 1st of a kid friendly horror book series titled "The Strange Times Files"
Steddie got married/mated January 5, 1988 when Steve was already pregnant w nugget #1
The names & birthdays of the 4 Munson nuggets are as follows:
Nugget #1: Joan Riot Munson (May 4, 1988)
Nugget #2: Lennon "Lenny" Eagles Munson (August 15, 1992, 10:23am)
Nugget #3: Stevie Jett Munson (August 15, 1992, 10:25am)
Nugget #4: Jim Hendricks Munson (Jan 1, 1996)
(I did actual math to make these birthdays make sense so I can get the age gaps right & yes Lenny is going to b very obnoxious about being older than Stevie around their 12th birthday)
Steddie decide to hold off on nugget #5 for a few years. Then in 1998 when baby Jim is 2 years old, the twins are 6, and Joan is 10, they decide to start trying for #5
For their anniversary tht year Lucas uses his professional basketball player money to get them a private jet to Amsterdam, Will uses his art connections to get them a whole townhouse not far from the Van Gogh museum, and El makes Steve an entire bespoke wardrobe just for the trip (including lingerie).
They'll b gone for the rest of January (enough time to encompass Steve's upcoming heat) & while there is nervous energy tht they're leaving their pups for so long they know that their pack will take good care of them. Eddie provides a binder on each of the pups likes & dislikes & any allergies (Joan can't have shellfish & Lenny can't have mushrooms) along with a rough outline of the usual schedule of their days during the school week & weekends as well as any & every phone number they might need (poison control, pediatricians, school, and the number of the townhouse they'll staying at) & last but not least is what to do when each pup can't sleep (Joan goes down after a short game of scrabble because tht kid is a voracious reader w a vocabulary to match, Lenny & Stevie get tired after a cup of warm milk with honey extra points if Wheel of Fortune is playing on the TV, and Jim usually just needs to b allowed to get excess energy out then given warm milk with honey of his own)
The trip is wonderful!
Steve's mom visits for a few days from Vienna, she brings the famous sachertorte w her (which steve "sweet tooth" munson ends up loving) & invites them to visit her in Austria for the Christmas season next year in 1999 insistent tht she will pay for everything & tht she doesn't care tht Eddie makes good money producing music in Chicago she got an amazing divorce settlement & as a result owns half of Richard's more lucrative investments as well as her own newer investments. Amelia Harrington extracts a promise from the couple to be in Austria for Christmas 1999 then bids them goodbye & returns to her apartment in Vienna wishing them luck on making nugget #5.
they smoke weed in coffeeshops, they see an NSFW art performance in the red light district, & wander the museum & streets & generally be in love. Steve's heat comes on schedule near the end of their trip & it's a beautiful experience of reconnecting as people not just as parents or a couple. By the end they miss their pups, have fallen more in love, & r ready to be home again.
A few weeks after getting home Steve feels a little weird like he might b coming down w something, he's more easily nauseous & having body aches but cannot figure out what exactly is going on. He goes to their doctor with an inkling but wants to rule out all other possibilities, his blood test comes back telling them he's not only healthy but pregnant again w nugget #5!!! Steve is ecstatic & when he tells Eddie the alpha starts crying from how in love he is with his mate & how grateful he is tht Steve has given their family 4 healthy pups & is now pregnant w #5
Nugget #5 is a textbook pregnancy, so much so the doctor jokes abt it. Steve is glowing by week 5, baby #5 likes tumbling around more than their siblings, his cravings r different on the whole except he still craves pickles tht r as crunchy as possible like he did w his previous 3 pregnancies. Nugget #5 is due around October 29th but all baby does is drop into Steve's pelvis around tht date.
Then... October 31st arrives & Steve wakes up at 5am from a contraction. It isn't quite go time yet so the family goes abt their day w the exception tht Steve pauses to breathe thru contractions every now & then, steddie get their pups ready for school complete with costumes & makeup & promises tht when the day is done they'll have a new baby sibling in the world, Eddie takes the day off & takes baby Jim to Wayne's (who lives 2 doors down at steddies insistence) who then starts the phone tree to let everyone know nugget #5 is on the way today. By the time Eddie gets back home Steve has timed the contractions closer together but his water hasn't broken quite yet so after Eddie gets the hospital bag in the car along w his mate they go to portillo's for some French fries & a chocolate cake shake. It's as they get back in the car with Steve happily dipping his fries into his shake tht his water breaks. The hospital knows they're coming & so there's almost no chaos to speak of.
Steve gets hooked up to machines & Eddie gets scrubbed in so he can hold his mates hand as it comes time to push. He's pushing well but something feels wrong the longer he goes on, he doesn't feel weaker but something isn't right. & steddie realize at the same time as the medical team tht the babies heart rate is dropping with every push. Then there's a lot of movement really quickly as the doctor is suddenly prepping for surgery while a nurse explains tht an emergency c-section is going to be necessary & tht Steve will need to go under anesthesia. Eddie is doing everything in his power to maintain his own calm while thru the bond he feels Steve's anxiety mounting into panic as the information sinks in, he promises to not leave his side & tht everything w b okay & tht c-sections must not b a big deal bc already the doctor is ready & the anesthesiologist is entering the room & did Steve know tht Shakespeare mentioned c-sections so tht means they've been around longer than anesthesia & then Steve is breathing in the gas & counting backwards from 10 but only gets to 8 before he's closing his eyes
The surgery is indeed not a big deal, there's a lot of blood & he peeks to see they had to move Steve's organs around & Eddie's heart drops into the basement when he sees how blue his baby girl was because the umbilical cord had wrapped around her neck but soon they unwind it & she's breathing in big lungfuls of air & crying at the injustice of leaving her warm home of the past 40 weeks & she's laid down under a warming lamp before they even wash her because her temperature wasn't what they'd like
While Steve wakes up baby #5 is weighed & measured & she's healthy all around except the scare she gave them all because of her propensity for tumbling around in the fluid filled womb. Once she's washed her scent blooms milky but sweeter than any of their pups & after a blood test the doctors confirm she's indeed an omega (Joan was born with a milky but spicy scent & dual sex anatomy so a blood test confirmed tht she's a girl alpha, and its very likely the twins will b betas)
Steddie name her Siouxsie Robin Munson, Robin begins blubbering immediately when Steve tells her this. She gets baby Siouxsie a stuffed Robin bird for her crib tht the pup holds onto well into adulthood
Siouxsie goes home from the hospital & about a year later proves to b the water baby of the bunch. taking to the infant swimming classes at The Y like a duck to water. Eddie jokes she was tumbling around so much in the womb to prepare for an Olympic career.
((Indeed, 18 years later, following a lot of hard work & a lot of tears & a lot of moments of almost quitting but persevering anyway, in 2016 the entire upside down pack (+ pups & spouses & the list goes on & even not-so-baby-anymore Jim took a break from his latest filming schedule to b there) are all cheering wildly in the stands of Rio de Janeiro while Siouxsie Robin Munson wins gold in the women's 400 metres freestyle swim event, it is the first of many Olympic games she will attend & the first of many gold medals she will win))
(i was indeed impressed with the dates but also laughing because steddie have the same anniversary as my mom and i who are both divorced from the curse of our january 5th weddingsđ)
