Try this simple way to onboard new employees and build team cohesion One of the things that set my best internships apart is something that most of my jobs since then have failed to do. And considering it’s an exercise that costs zero dollars, relatively little time, and has the potential to radically improve the way that organizations do onboarding, that’s a real shame.Read more... https://qz.com/how-interviews-can-onboard-employees-and-teams-1850078747

Since we all hate United already, let's show how awful their mobile app is
Tumblr media
If you think flying United will leave you battered and bruised, just try booking a flight on United's mobile app. Useronboard presents the horrorshow in 149 slides. This is the best takedown of corporate idiocy since 2007's Yours is a Very Bad Hotel.

I'm sure most UXers are familiar with Samuel Hulick (https://www.useronboard.com/contact/), who does some amazing teardowns and really gets you into a UX mindset in a simple, visually-appealing way!
This teardown took a look at the Oregon SNAP website, where users can apply for food stamps. Samuel writes,"Right now, somewhere between 1/6 and 1/5 of households in the US are collecting food stamps, a safety net service affecting nearly 50 million lives. How is this service being delivered to those with the least of means?"
Throughout this user onboarding process, the user is bombarded with pages of small text and repetitive prompts. Walking through the site through this teardown really makes it clear that this site was not created with the ease of use in mind. Instead, the web pages are littered with disclaimers and confusing links to other documents.
This teardown really stood out to me because SNAP benefits are such crucial benefits needed by a bunch of my own current clients and millions of other people across the country. For poorer households close to the poverty line, food stamps are indispensable. State governments can do more to make such services easier to apply for and access.

This Week
"Just because it’s fun to hang out at the water cooler at work, it doesn’t mean I want to work there....
There’s also a subtle side effect to asynchronish business, and that is its effect on the decision making process. When work gets done over email, there’s a general expectation of a response buffer of at least an hour or two. In you, though, people can convene and decide on anything at any time.
This is awesome for speeding up the tempo of company directives, but it also places a ton of pressure on everyone involved to maintain even MORE Slack omnipresence; if any discussion might lead to a decision being made, that provides a whole lot of incentive to be available for as many discussions as possible.
Even worse, those with the least on their plates can maintain the most Slack presence, which leads to the most gregariously unengaged representing the majority of the discussion base while penalizing those who are fully engaged in their “real” work."- Slack, I’m Breaking Up with You (Samuel Hulick for UserOnboard)
“Harmon handled it the way he handles everything: out loud, in front of strangers. It’s the way he handled his divorce (episode 167) and the complicated relationship he has with his parents (too many episodes to name). It’s how he’s confronted the estranged brother who called him a lazy piece of shit and hasn’t spoken to him in 12 years. It’s where he works out his guilt about his sister, born with the rare neurological disorder Rett syndrome, which has left her institutionalized for most of her life. ‘I feel like I was born a criminal,’ Harmon tells me. ‘With a karmic credit card that’s maxed out.’ He says these things in hope of staving off inevitable retribution.” - The Tortured Mind Of Dan Harmon (Sean O’Neal for GQ)
“Over time, I realized that the natural instinct to push for early impact leads many incoming leaders into challenging relationships as they expose their knowledge deficit and waste time. So, I developed an algorithm that has helped me ramp up quickly — and in several cases — have an impact in a relatively short period of time, while minimizing collateral damage.” - A Career Cold Start Algorithm (Andrew Bosworth for Boz.com)
“’Just take the blame, and you’re a free man,’ he said.” - Tough Job: Norway’s Ski Wax Chief Is Only Noticed When He Fails (David Segal for The New York Times)
“For every person who wants you to have bigger portions, there is someone who says the portions are too big. For every person who says your writing is too personal, there’s someone who wants it to be more personal…” - Seth’s Blog: Never smooth enough–a modern addiction (Seth Godin for Seth’s Blog)

What is Onboarding?
Continuing on from my previous post on onboarding research from the Smashing Magazine.
According to UserOnboard, in software development, onboarding is about helping users to successfully adopt and fully embrace a product.
I’ll need to remember that Onboarding follows the 80⁄20 rule. Essentially it is effective only if I can quickly teach people how to use the small subset of features that they will spend 80% of their time using, whilst also explaining why the features are so useful.
Onboarding is accomplished by displaying a set of brief messages that show users how to interact with the app to solve a problem or that show the app’s main idea or killer features. Onboarding can take several forms:
introductory slides or video,
tips,
interface tour,
content samples,
hybrid solution.
All of these solutions are effective at communicating with users. I need to chose what would work best for my target audience - which is anyone aged 16 - 65+ and also what makes sense for my app’s functionality.
vimeo
Above shows a very simplistic 3-page onboarding experience with illustrated animations to explain three top tips on how to use the app. This is similar to what I plan to do with my major project onboarding experience, however, more time will be spent on the illustrations.
Trigger Positive Emotions
Once people start using an app, they will easily forget the onboarding and get lost in the UI.  In chapter 5 of Fundamental UI Design, Jane Portman says:
Any user onboarding is all about psychology: the early feeling of success and accomplishment will make the user come back.
Due to this, it’s important that I implement elements of gamification throughout my app. I plan to do this through daily reading challenges and reading prompts to encourage the user to meet their reading goal for the day/week/month.
