Today we got to play around with @mirohq for the first time as a class. A party of 35+ students on one online whiteboard was quite interesting. 😯 _________________ This was my first time using an online platform to create an affinity diagram vs a real whiteboard. It was refreshing not having to pick up sticky notes that don't want to stick for the life of me! 😁💀😂 _________________ #savethetrees #savethestickies #uxbootcamp #uxresearch #uidesign #uxdesign #uxresearcher #affinitydiagram #userinterviews #empathymap #userpersona #survey #sythesize #whiteboard #stickynotes #insights #designthinking #uxaustin (at Austin, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCzlVcjgegE/?igshid=sy02x9qwiak0

Questions to Spark a Great Father's Day
Tumblr media
Photo by Kelli McClintock on Unsplash
Today is Father’s Day! As a family we are going to my parents in law’s house to celebrate with a nice BBQ dinner. Recently as I did dozens of user interviews, I was inspired to create a fun session to engage the family conversation. I tried this with my dad online since my parents are in China, and it really made my dad very happy and touched. This will be more appreciated expecially when you dad’s love language is “words of affirmation”.
Here are the questions I came up with to share at the dinner table. I would be the facilitator, and my husband & sister in law would participate in answering these questions. As a result, I hope I can record the answers and make a little video for my father in law to remember in the future.
Pick 3 words to describe dad, and Why?
Pick one word and recall the most memorable experience that relates.
What do you respect most for dad as a person?
How has dad helped you in the past and what do you appreciate the most?
What’s the funnest thing you remember dad did?
What’s the most memorable experience you had with dad?
Is there a case you wish you did or said anything differently with dad, and now you want to try it again?
What do you wish you can do more for dad in the future?
What’s your best wish for dad? What would you like to say to dad on this father’s day, that you normally wouldn’t say to dad?
Happy father’s day to all the dad, and dad to be!

How to talk to users and validate your ideas
This week, I learned two things. First, customer interview is a very crucial part of every business/company. During the interview, you will learn every specific details that your products should possess. Like in every problem the customer had, how the customer tried to solve it. Through this, you’ll have an idea of what features your product should have that will be able to help the customer. You will gain more knowledge on how you will be able to create a product that is efficient to the customer. Second, interviewing customers is not an easy task. Before the interview, you should have a specific list of questions to ask the customer/user that will help you to come up with ideas to improve your products. You should have a clear goal on what information you need to extract from the interviewee. Also, it’s important to create a casual and friendly environment so the interview feels comfortable talking to the interviewer. To extract more needed information, the question should be open-ended question and easy to understand so the interviewee won’t have a hard time answering the questions. Most importantly, the interviewer should know what type of user/customer to interview. In my part, interviewing someone is difficult, because I don’t feel comfortable or feel confident talking to other people especially strangers. Though I know that I should step up my game and be more confident, not just for myself but also for my interviewee. Since the interviewee might be uncomfortable with me due to my behavior and the interview might not be a success. Being more confident and being professional is very important in our daily lives not just in business, isn’t it?

Visual diary #5 | Initial user interview + study
The initial problem I chose to tackle was "How can technology help consumers waste less time?" After doing some initial research and interviewing friends and coworkers, I decided to tweak this question to be more specific.
How can technology help us spend less time in lines?
I first created a 'dumping ground' for all of my notes, ideas, screenshots, photos, and thoughts. I chose to use RealtimeBoard because it was simple to use and available everywhere (its browser-based). After researching online, I discovered most of the products and services geared towards 'wasting less time' were very specific in the type of wasted time they sought to eliminate. Many focused on wasting less time:
At work
On the internet
In traffic
On social media
I found these articles to be helpful, but they weren't really helping me understand how to utilize technology to save time. The few products I did come across were also marketed to tackle one of the above topics. The only product that sought to save people time by leveraging existing technology was Google 'Popular Times' feature that appears in some Google searches. It shows how busy a business typically is during different times of the day and shows the average time spent by most visitors.
Tumblr media
After my initial research, I set up a handful of preliminary interviews with friends. I wanted to use this time to fine-tune my list of questions, before creating a Google Forms study to share with a wider audience. While sitting down and discussing the topic, I realized my initial question was far too broad. Nearly every person I spoke with had trouble discussing the idea of 'wasted time' but could talk at length about spending time waiting in lines. I think this is due to each of us having a different idea of what 'waste' means. For some, sitting in traffic can be a waste of time. For others, it can be an escape and an opportunity to catch up on an audiobook or call a friend. I realized if I wanted to solve a problem in this space, I needed to frame my problem to include something more users could collectively understand.
Tumblr media
I don't think I would have come to this realization if it weren't for the research and interviews I conducted. These allowed me to learn more about the space and the problem I set out to solve.

After we conducted user testing and interviews, we put together all the things we heard from our drone users and did an activity called affinity mapping. An affinity diagram (the result of mapping) allows you to gather large amounts of data (issues, opinions, experiences, ideas) and organizes them into groups and categories. It also helps surface the relationship between these groups.  As we mapped the things we heard from our drone users, we saw some categories emerge: things like Tooltip issues or Zooming Controls.

Excited to be at the #Ölzbündt housing development by Architekten #HermannKaufmann. The project was built in 1997, and Kaufmann simplified the prefabricated timber construction developed for this project to make it accessible to any construction company. The simplified system was used on several subsequent housing projects. Ölzbündt is lookin real nice after 20 years--they're having a party to celebrate the anniversary later in the month. I was lucky to speak with a couple of neighbors on site who told me their thoughts on the project, and offered to send around my building survey. Fingers crossed! #surveypushing #uphillclimb #userinterviews #travel4timber . . . . #masstimber #timberarchitecture #woodconstruction #woodarchitecture (at Ölz Grafikdesign)
