Umbrellas and automobiles are different. Not just because of size, function, and cost. But for a reason we seldom stop to consider. A person can use an umbrella without buying another product. An automobile, by contrast, is useless without fuel, oil, repair services, spare parts, not to mention streets and roads. The humble umbrella, therefore, is a rugged individual, so to speak, delivering value to its user irrespective of any other product. The mighty auto, by contrast, is a team player completely dependent on other products. So is a razor blade, a tape recorder, a refrigerator, and thousands of other products that work only when combined with others. The television set would stare blankly into the living room if someone somewhere were not transmitting images to it. Even the lowly closet hanger presupposes a rack or bar to hang it on. Each of these is part of a product system. It is precisely their systemic nature that is their main source of economic value. And just as "team players" must play by certain agreed-on rules, systemic products need standards to work. A three-pronged electrical plug doesn't help much if all the wall sockets have only two slots. This distinction between stand-alone and systemic products throws revealing light on an issue that is widening today's information wars all around the world. The French call it la guerre des normes—“the war over standards." Battles over standards are raging in industries as diverse as medical technology, industrial pressure vessels, and cameras.

Believe me, nobody was more jazzed about my interview with Consumer Reports than me. I grew up as a kid reading its dry, dry prose, dreaming about the day when I, too, would get to smash the living shit out of consumer appliances until they fell apart. Savagery would flow through my pen, dismantling multinational corporations for the capital crime of having made a dishwasher with buttons that scratch easily.
I had been "funemployed" for quite some time. In fact, I'd been without a job for so long that my parole officer told me I had to go get one, otherwise they would put me back in the hole. So, I decided to go out on a limb and write Consumer Reports about all the torture testing I'd been doing to my half-century-old menagerie of shitboxes. A few minutes after I sent the email, I got a breathless, panicked phone call from the head destructive testing engineer, who told me to get on a fucking plane and head out there pronto.
Plane? Plane? I made a solemn vow in my youth to never get in an automobile driven by anyone else. And even though it flies through the air using what I think is an elaborate series of lies, an airplane certainly qualifies. I cashed the plane ticket in for gas money, and then set out for a road trip in my most reliable 1978 Volare, its trunk packed full of spare fluids, tires, and parts, almost none of which I had to use.
There was just one problem. Their headquarters are located in a pretty weird spot of an industrial park. One of those big skyscrapers-on-skyscrapers places where nobody lives, and the food sucks, but there are thousands of parking spots. They all look the same, and I think I transposed a digit in the address when I was punching it into my GPS (a Garmin from 1997, whose speaker barely works and whose power supply consists of an absurd number of ganged-together solar panels that I broke out of desk calculators.) When I turned up, the building looked like any of the other ones in the complex, so I went on in.
The good news? I got the job. The bad news? The good folks at Kitchenaid were so terrified about how aggressively I dismantled their test blender that my job is "being paid to stay at least 100 feet away from any and all Kitchenaid employees, at all times." It pays pretty well, though, which is to their credit. I think it's because I made a good first impression. And second. And third. They really should have made those chopping-blade impellers out of a better plastic.

Thomas Barrow x Teen!reader - the bond that keeps us going
Part five:
You had woken up a few more times that night, but with some small reading from Thomas you would quickly fall back asleep again.
“She will be moved to London in a few hours.” Doctor Clarkson spoke.
“So she will be okay then?” Your mother asked.
“We’re not quite out the woods yet my lady, I suspect lady (Y/N) will be there for quite a while.”
“How long?” Lady Mary asked.
“As of right now I cannot tell, but I will be getting daily updates, and I will go down once a week to see her.”
Everyone nodded and looked at you, Lady Edith was asleep by your side, and Thomas was asleep in the chair, still holding your hand in his.
“He will have to stay here.”
“Can he not go just for a day or two? To help her settle in?” Lady Cora asked.
“I’m sure he has more pressing matter to attend to here.”
“Oh I’m sure Carson can manage. (Y/N) will need help learning the layout of everything and Thomas is the only person she will allow to help her.”
Doctor Clarkson sighed heavily and looked at you.
“I will be staying for two days myself, I suppose he can come up and back with me.”
“Thank you Doctor Clarkson.” Your mother smiled.
You weren’t woken up until it was an hour before your departure from Downton Abbey to go to London.
You had been placed in a wheelchair, and your father was pushing it for you.
“We will visit you once you’re all settled in, alright?”
“Yes mama…” you whispered.
“Take our blessings with you, it will be lonely without you here (Y/N).”
You smiled at Lady Mary, and nodded your head.
After saying goodbye to your family, you were helped into the automobile, and you carefully felt around, inspecting everything.
“It’s black, and the door is a rather dark blue.” Thomas whispered.
“Is it nice…?”
“It is.” He smiled.
You nodded your head and you frowned a little.
“What’s wrong lady (Y/N)?”
“I.. don’t like… it…”
“Is it because you cannot feel the ground?”
You nodded your head softly.
“And.. I cannot… see where… I’m going…”
“Then let me describe it to you.”
You reached out, patting the seat next to you until you found his jacket sleeve and you gripped it tightly, listening as Thomas told you everything.
He explains everything to you, every turn, ever corner, every automobile passing by.
When you arrived to the small hospital in London where you would be staying, he did the exact same thing when you got inside.
He took you on laps around room so you could familiarise yourself around it.
Now you had been confined to bed once more by the doctors and the nurses, and Thomas was sat on the chair next to you reading to you.
“Thomas…?”
“Yes?”
“Will.. you.. still be… at Downton…?”
Thomas looked up from the book and set it aside.
“Of course I will, I wouldn’t dare dream of leaving Downton while I know you’re coming back soon.”
You smiled, nodding your head.
It was hard for you when Thomas had to leave, but he promised if you ever called for him he would come, and he would see you in all his half days.
And Thomas wasn’t used to not being with you in his free time, he came to realise how much spare time he actually did have when he wasn’t help you, talking to you, reading to you.
But just like he promised, he came to see you as often as he possible could.
And so much had changed in the weeks and slowly months that you were gone.
Everyone kept you updated, your family when they visited you, Thomas when he came down once or twice a month.
“Ah Thomas, this just arrived for you.” Mr Carson said.
He handed it the small envelope.
“Someone actually sends him post?” Alfred scoffed a little.
“Must be pretty desperate to be willingly writing to Thomas Barrow.” James smirked.
Thomas looked at the two new footmen and he flicked his eyes to Mr Carson.
“That desperate woman you are referring to happens to be her ladyship (Y/N), the youngest of Lord Grantham’s daughters, so I suggest you hold your tongue.”
Both of them quickly looked down while everyone else snickered at them.
“Why would her lady write to a servant Mr Carson?” A housemaid asked.
“That is nothing to do with any of you. Thomas how is her ladyship?”
Thomas opened the letter and walked over.
“Well?” Mrs Hughes said.
“It says her chest is better, but she still struggles to walk and breathe sometimes. She’s had a few more episodes but nothing in the last month.” Mr Carson said.
“Will her ladyship be home soon?” Mr Bates asked.
“The letter says hopefully just before the cricket match.”
There was clapping around the servants hall and Mr Carson handed the letter back to Thomas.
“Take it to his lordship, and let him know in case they have yet to notify the family.”
“Very good Mr Carson.”
Thomas rushed away.
You were overjoyed with the thought of going home, to be able to return to your family and familiar places once more.
You were sat in the back of the automobile, and you hated every second of it being sat there by yourself for so long.
But when the door was opened you felt a sense of relief.
“Oh my darling.” Your mother whispered.
She helped you out and held your face between her hands, placing a kiss to the top of your head.
“How are you?” Your father asked.
“I’m better papa.”
He smiled, doing the same as your mother and you felt someone hug you.
“Mary…” you smiled.
“How ever did you know?” She laughed.
“Only you hug me like this.” You smiled.
She pulled away and then you hugged Lady Edith just as tightly.
“We have some new servants to introduce to you, they have all been told about your condition, but we thought you’d like to hear their voices to recognise them.” Lord Grantham said.
“Oh?”
You walked up to the door and stopped.
Reaching your hand out, you grabbed the hand of the butler standing by the door and smiled.
“Carson.”
He squeezed your hand.
“I am glad to see you well my lady.”
You beamed at him and you were led inside, and stopped in the middle of the hall.
“Right, we’ll start with the new footmen.” Mr Carson said.
They stood forward and introduced themselves.
“Speak clearly, have you forgotten what you were told!” Mr Carson hissed.
“It’s quite alright Carson.” Your father said.
They repeated their names again, more clearly for you, and then the new housemaids were told to do the same by Mrs Hughes.
“Thank you all for speaking so clearly. You must understand if you come into a room you will announce yourselves clearly for Lady (Y/N) to hear.” Lady Cora said.
You turned your head, carefully listening to the room.
“You appear to be missing someone Mr Carson.” You said quietly.
“I believe we have everyone here my lady.”
You shook your head and slowly walked through the house and all the servants watched you confused.
“She never heard his voice when everyone spoke.” Lady Edith said.
“Oh my!” Mrs Hughes said.
She quickly followed you, as did everyone else to try and beat you before you reached the stairs but you had appeared to have already gone down.
“Lady (Y/N)!?” Mr Carson called.
You were stood in the servants hall with a heavy frown on your face.
“He’s not here…” you mumbled.
“Who your lady?” Alfred asked you.
“Her ladyship is looking for Thomas.”
They all shared a look before turning back to you.
“I believe I saw him go outside not long ago my lady, shall I take you?” Anna asked.
You nodded your head and followed her.
“Well, now that crisis is averted I think we’ll have luncheon in half an hour Carson.”
“Very good my lord.”
The family went upstairs and everyone went about their bustle to get everything ready.
You went outside and Anna took you over and you listened carefully.
“Is he here Anna?”
“He is my lady, just in front of you.”
You nodded and padded in front of you and stood shortly after.
Reaching out, you tapped the wall and finally you felt a livery jacket.
“Thomas.”
You felt him pull away and you frowned.
“Thomas?”
“I’m sorry my lady… I.. do not think you should touch me..” he mumbled.
You heard the sadness in his voice and you titled your head a little bit.
“What’s wrong?”
He sighed.
“I.. have not been honest with you my lady.. and I fear you will be disgusted by me, repulsed should you ever find out…”
“Let us talk about it, come on.”
You reached out and grabbed his hand and you pulled away a little confused.
You reached out and took it again, feeling the fabric around his hand.
Ignoring it, you grabbed his hand and led him inside.
“My lady let me.”
Thomas went first to held you up the step, and you grabbed his arm as you looked around until you found the door you were looking for and you pushed it open.
“Carson?”
“My lady.”
“Oh, James is here too. May I use your office to talk to Thomas?”
“Of course my lady. We will vacate at once.”
You walked in with Thomas and you heard the door close.
Sitting Thomas down, you sat next to him.
“What’s going on Thomas?”
“I.. must tell you something…”
And so he did, and he explained everything to you, his voice cracking as he told you about what had conspired over recent days.
“I am sorry if I disgust you my lady, but I will be leaving shortly.”
Standing up, you walked over front of him and reached out, wiping his tears.
“Don’t cry Thomas, I don’t like when you cry.”
Thomas sniffled a little.
“I’m sorry…”
“You have nothing to be sorry for. I don’t care what papa, or Carson, or this James boy has to say. You are staying in Downton and that is final.”
Thomas sniffled and look up.
“You are not repulsed by me?”
“Are you repulsed when you see me? The fact my eyes don’t look normal?” You countered.
“Of course not.”
“Then why would I be repulsed by you? Can I tell you something Thomas?”
“Of course my lady.”
You smiled and took his face in your hands.
“I have always known about you, I’m no fool. I have known for a while, some things you can just pick up on.”
You gestured for him to stand and he did, and you clasped his hands in yours.
“I would not care if you are a big green spaceman Thomas, you are my best friend, my favourite footman. You helped me when I needed it, now I will help you. Downton Abbey is your home, and I will not let someone run you out because they do not agree with your way of life.”
Thomas laughed a little.
“Thank you my lady.”
You beamed and bounced happily on your feet.
“Can we walk in the gardens Thomas? I want to talk, I’ve been in bed for so long.”
“Of course we can, come on then, I’ll ask Mrs Patmore to make you some luncheon and put it in a basket.”
You cheered and left the room and stood a little lost in the hallways since you had forgotten to follow Thomas.
You knew how to get to the servants hall, but that was it.
“My lady?” James asked.
“What?” You snapped.
He took a step back.
“I’m sorry my lady, I just though you seemed a bit lost is all.”
“Well I don’t need nor want your help, please refrain from speaking to me again.”
“I.. I’m sorry if I offended you my lady.”
You glared in his direction.
“Are you lost lady (Y/N)?”
You whipped your head in the other direction and huffed a little.
“You wondered off without me.”
“Well I thought you were following me.”
Thomas walked over and reached out, taking your hand he placed it on the basket.
“Do you have luncheon too?”
“I do my lady, yes. Are you ready?”
“Oh I cannot wait!”
You took his other hand and pulled your hand away again looking down at his hand with a confused look.
“I’m sorry my lady, here.”
Thomas moved to your other side and gave you his non bandaged hand.
You smiled brightly and took it, and Thomas helped guide you through the hallways and upstairs so you could announce that you were going for a walk.
“How can she touch him?” James said.
“Maybe she doesn’t know?” Alfred whispered.
“Oh no, her ladyship knows, I just heard them discussing it. I don’t think it right someone like him being allowed anywhere near a lady like her.” James said.
“If you two have nothing better to do but gossip about her ladyship I suggest you come serve luncheon.”
“Why is Thomas allowed so close to lady (Y/N)?” Alfred asked.
“The nature of the relationship between her ladyship and Thomas Barrow has nothing to do with anyone. The family are fine and happy with it and that is all that matters.”
Mr Carson ushered them away, but now he had to make sure his two new doormen didn’t stress you out in any sort of way.
Thomas was worried about you walking too far, so he set the luncheon up just in front of the house on the grass and he helped you sit down.
He served everything for you, and you sipped at your drink.
Thomas watched you carefully looking around, cloudy (E/C) eyes glancing around.
“So what will happen now?” You asked.
“Mr Carson wont give me a reference, I won’t be able to find work. But I’ll make it work.”
“Well, now you’re my… aid! You’re my aid!”
“Your what?”
“My aid! You help me see, so therefore papa cannot throw you out on the streets, because I need you to see.” You beamed.
“I don’t quite think it works like that my lady.” He chuckled.
You huffed a little.
“Well.. I will make Carson keep you here for now, and I’ll talk to both him and papa. I promise we’re going to figure this out.”
“You would do that for me? A lowly servant?”
“Well, that James seems a little full of himself if you ask me, and Alfred is too tall, and they’re not you, they don’t know me. And I do not want them too. And you are not a lowly servant Thomas Barrow do not say such things or I shall have to chased by the dogs.”
Thomas smiled softly at you.
“Thank you…” he whispered.
You beamed brightly at him, and though you still seemed exhausted, yet you were more of yourself than you were.
And now it was your turn to look after Thomas, and you would fight the whole house if you had to just to keep him there

This is such a good video, and I think it gets to the core of why LoK's "team avatar" never really came together into a coherent unit.
If I were to give one simple, reductive way to fix the issue, I would boil it down to:
The Legend of Korra needed more flashbacks.
Some of the strongest episodes from the original series were centered around flashbacks. 'The Storm', where the narrative first weaves in the parallels between Aang and Zuko, and 'Zuko Alone', which build's on the prince's abusive childhood, both spring to mind.
Even beyond that, they're sprinkled in to great effect. We see snatches of Katara and Sokka's childhoods at the Southern Water Tribe, and how they coped with the loss of their parents to war. We see Roku's journey to becoming an avatar. Iroh, Toph, hell, even Appa all get flashes to their past, however brief!
In comparison... LoK is very sparing with flashbacks.
Not to say they're non-existent. Some of them are functional, like the ones in Season 1 that flashback to how Aang took on the blood-bending criminal of his day. But a lot of them are emotional and work GREAT. I absolutely adore Lin's flashback to her tumultous relationship with her sister, and of course, the Beginnings two part is arguably one whole flashback, and generally considered some of the strongest episodes in the show.
But you know who doesn't get flashbacks?
Bolin, Mako, Asami, and Korra.
Korra, admittedly, we probably need the least. We see where she is when we start the show; we have a clear idea of her flaws; we see very clearly how her journey resolves them.
The other three Krew members? Not so much.
The thing is, they actually have really juicy character set-ups! Asami, from a non-bending family, building up the up-and-coming automobile industry. Mako and Bolin, mixed heritage brothers who find themselves on the street, fending for each other, far too young.
Writing that out, I instantly begin to wonder about all the ways that affected them. What neuroses it could have given them, what flaws they could have overcome. But the show never actually shows us. It just leaves us to fill in the blanks.
I can't help but wonder, if the writers had taken the time to craft a couple of flashback episodes, set up parallels and contrasts, and figure out what these characters wanted out of their adventures with Korra, if it would have come away much more cohesive.

• Ken Miles was born on November 1st of 1918 in Sutton Coldfield, England. During his early life he apprenticed at a British car manufacturer. During World War II, he worked in various duties that dealt with machinery and utilized his mechanical skills. He began motorcycle racing while in the service and this would continue after his tour. After World War II, he returned to the automobile industry and to automotive racing. He acquired a Frazer-Nash racer and installed a Ford V8-60 engine. It had mile success in local and club competition.
• In 1952 Ken Miles came to the United States where he accepted a position as service manager for an MG distributor in California. Later, he would became involved with a wide range of teams and races and have a profound influence on early American road racing. His skills as a driver and fabricator quickly evolved and he became legendary on the West Coast with his competitive Specials.
• Miles first racer (that he constructed) was in 1953, while working for Gough Industries. He had been racing MG TD's for Gough, but they were often outclassed by the competition. Gough helped Miles with creating a racer, though he was unable to provide cash. What Gough did provide was use of any MG or Morris and any stock spare part.
• Miles began work on the MG R-1. The frame was created from mild steel tubing and attached to MG Series "Y" independent front suspension. The rear was comprised of a live axle. Alfin aluminum drum brakes with two-wheel cylinders were used to provide the stopping power while a Morris Minor rack-and-pinion kept the vehicle in the drivers control.
• Under the hood was an experimental racing engine that had a 1466cc displacement size. The engine would later be used by MG for their MG TF 1500. The engine had twin SU carburetors and a 10.5:1 initial compression ratio. The compression ratio was later increased to 11.6:1. The 83 horsepower engine was mated to a stock MG TD transmission which sent the power to the rear wheels.
• The car was clothed in a hand-formed aluminum body. The overall weight of the vehicle was less than 1,230 pounds. The car made its inaugural appearance in 1953 at a rainy Pebble Beach. The car had not been tested but this did not seem to matter, as it emerged victorious. Throughout the next year, the car would win all of the races it was entered, except for two. Its racing career came to an end in 1954 at Pebble Beach, when it suffered mechanical difficulties and failed to finish the race. The flywheel bolts fractures which allowed the flywheel to come loose. This resulted in the engine over-revving and it threw a rod. The R-1 Miles Special's racing career had come to an end.
• The second Miles Special racer was constructed in similar fashion to the first, but incorporated many key mechanical and design changes. Many MG components were still utilized, such as the gearbox and 1466cc MG XPEG engine. The space frame chassis was constructed from one-inch steel tubing which was lighter than its predecessor, but still retained the structural rigidity. To reduce frontal area, the driving position was lowered by nearly four inches. Other techniques were used to reduce the frontal area. The engine was tilted down in the front which did much to achieve this goal.
• The car was narrow and low, which meant changes were needed to fit all the engine components in the engine bay. The MG intake manifolds were installed upside down which allowed the carburetors to be angled and fit under the hood. The design of the vehicle was similar to the MG TF. This was done for brand recognition and to help promote the MG line of vehicles. There were differences; the R-2 had an envelope body with fenders that flared up, and over, the front and rear wheels. In the front was an MG style grille with headlights on either side. The car was finished in British racing green.
• The car was given the nickname, the Flying Shingle. Its inaugural race was in 1955 at Willow Springs. It failed to finish the race. Many of the other races in which it entered, it emerged victorious. Among its accomplishments were first place finishes at Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines. Miles was doing well in small-bore racing, but the competition was consistently keeping pace. Soon, a new machine was needed.
• Miles acceptable a position at Johnny Von Neumann's Porsche dealership. He raced during the 1956 season in a Porsche 550 Spyder and began work on a new racing Special. With von Neumann providing a generous budget, and Porsche providing ample stock components, Miles was able to construct a proper, large-budget racer. Power came from a Porsche Carrera four-cam engine that displaced 1500cc. The chassis was a Cooper Bobtail with a modified nose. The suspension was an independent setup with drums in the front and rear. The body shell was constructed of aluminum which aided greatly in the vehicles low weight of just under 950 pounds.
• Near the close of 1956, the newly created Special was brought to Pomona where it was piloted by Miles to a second place finish. At Paramount Ranch, the car was driven to a class win in the 1500cc class, and beat-out the big-bore modified class as well. The car was raced in 1956 and for part of 1957 before the von Neumann dealership was given the break they had been desperately searching for - a Porsche 550A. The car was supplied from the factory with orders to sell the R-3 Pooper Special. The R-1, R-2, and R-3 are still in existence in modern times. They are used in vintage competition and are shown at events.
• Ken Miles life came to a tragic end on August 17th, 1966 while driving a Ford J-car prototype. The car was traveling at 175 mph on a back-strech. Ken began preparing for a corner, slowing the vehicle down, but it went out of control and over an embankment. Ken was thrown from the car as it spun and went end-over-end. This tragedy brought an end to a brilliant career that began during the very early 1950s.

Eternity Is Just One Step Away
Chapter One
It's an ugly bridge on a street without a name, hidden in the middle of rural nowhere. Just concrete barriers like prison walls holding a two lane road that's rutted with potholes. He ditches the rental car in the scrub next to the road and kills the engine, leaving the lights on even though he doesn't need the light to do what he's planning. Realises with a shudder that he has no idea where he is, then shrugs, because he's been lost for so fucking long that it's almost become a comfort to him. Lost is a destination when you have nothing else to surrender, and slowly but surely his own bad choices have stripped anything good from him.
It's raining; fine heavy drizzle that soaks through his shirt and makes him shiver. The water stings the cuts on his back and shoulders, and the cold makes the broken wrist and both of his bruised knees throb like a busted, rotten tooth. He swipes a hand across his face, tastes blood like old iron on his lips. Gravel crunches under his boots and sounds no different to the gunshots still echoing in his head.
The animal part of his brain wants to retreat to the scant shelter of the car. He ignores it, just like he's ignoring the pain, just like he trained to do, back when he had a flag on his shoulder and hands that were still clean of blood. Back when picking up a gun meant protecting someone weaker than him, rather than more slaughter under the banner of yet another PMC. Back when he could meet the eyes of the man staring back at him from the mirror.
He reaches the middle of the bridge. There's a constellation of broken glass on the road and a nasty gouge out of the concrete, still marked by red paint where the bridge had held up against assault by automobile. He feels similarly battered, the bright and shiny new walls he'd built up doing good for a change crumbling because the foundation he'd built them on was giving way.
Moonlight reflects off the murky water twenty feet below him. It smells silty, thick with mud, the channel and banks choked with tangled weeds, but that doesn't bother him, because it suits his purposes just fine. The comfortable numbness that had descended on him when he picked up the gun in the warehouse wavers for a second, shards of good memories turned to pain slicing so deeply for a moment he thinks he won't need the gun tucked into his jeans at the small of his back. He breathes through the pain and the memories, lets them fade away under the quiet, bottomless depression he's been swimming against for too damn long.
The gun is warm - shockingly so, as he forces his stiff fingers to close around the grip. He's thought about this day, more times than he can count, planned it down to the smallest detail, but he never included leaving behind good people who loved him and accepted him for what he was. That was never in the plan, because he never in a million years thought he'd finally be part of something good again.
Until I fucked that up, too, he thinks, and leans back, resting his weight on his broken wrist until the clean white-hot pain engulfs him and he doesn't have to think about the team any more, because he's not entirely sure how or when they found out what he'd done, but they had, and he'd walked into the hotel room to a welcome as warm as a midwinter morning.
None of them will look at him, and his bags are neatly packed, piled by the door, clearly and devastatingly separate from the rest of the team's luggage. His spare boots are on top, laces free from fancy knots and that hurts more than anything else, a sharp, lancing pain where friendship used to be. There are words stuck in his throat, sharp edged like razors, but he can't get them free, so he just scoops the bags up and backs out of the room, retreating to the rental car like a wolf that's chewed off a limb to be free of a trap. Limping and bleeding and knowing life will never ever be the same.
A fish jumps in the water below, landing with a splash, snapping him out of his memories and he shifts so he's sitting on the concrete barriers, back to the water and lifts the gun. The metal is warm against his temple, a sharp contrast from the chilly wind blowing over his newly shorn scalp. It had been hard, one handed, crammed in a tiny convenience store bathroom, hacking at his hair with his knife until most of it was gone, falling to the floor like leaves from a dying tree.
It's better, this way, he thinks, good Eliot had long hair and God knows I ain't really that man.
He closes his eyes, finger tightening on the trigger and suddenly he's falling, weightless, and finally free.

i remember one time thinking it was strange that automobiles don’t exist in Star Trek like not even as a statement of luxury. Like we know there are places in the Star Trek universe where people insist on doing things in an old-fashioned manner, like there are a few chefs who insist on making food from scratch instead of using the replicators (Sisko’s dad and Neelix being just two examples)
And then I started thinking that the Ferengi should be all over that. It’d be a perfect money-making scheme. You convince some gamma-quadrant species that these things are scene as signs of luxury, that you have enough leisure time to go driving in this opulent motor carriage instead of merely transporting to your destination. Then you sell the motor carriage. Then you neglect to tell them the recipe to synthesize the fuel for it and then you start selling them the fuel at a premium. Then you sell them the tires and the spare parts and you set up Ferengi-owned service stations on the planet to service the automobiles they have that are too complicated for them to fix themselves.
And then it hit me. Cars are just as much of a money sucker in real life as they would be in Star Trek. They are the perfect scam.
Anyways you ever hear some people claim that Star Trek is a left-leaning political commentary? Yeah,

How to Identify Genuine OEM vs Aftermarket Car Parts When Shopping Online
Regardless of its technological heritage (German, American, Italian, etc.), your vehicle has components created by hundreds of different companies. All significant automakers outsource the design and production of the many elements of an automobile to independent automotive firms. What does this imply for the client in particular? Regardless of whether they are original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. If you want to know more about when you buy car parts online, read the story below.
What is a Genuine Part?
It is a collection of OEM-branded replacement components that were factory-installed in the vehicle at manufacturing time. However, this doesn't necessarily imply that automakers are making such items; it's uncommon for other manufacturers to slap the carmaker's logo on these automobile parts. The inclusion of the company's branding drives up the price of these spare parts to a maximum.
When a replacement part breaks, most of us know that the warranty will be null and invalid unless we get an authentic, officially approved part with the manufacturer's logo. This is just another urban legend that causes people to take unnecessary detours. Under "The Magnuson-Most Warranty Act," it is illegal for automakers to void a warranty simply because the customer has installed aftermarket components. No amount of DIY repairs or trips to repair shops other than the dealership will void the warranty.
Advantages of Genuine Auto Parts
Keep reading to learn about the additional benefits when you buy car parts online.
The Guarantee of High-Quality
Nothing beats the peace of mind that comes from knowing you're still using the same high-quality parts in your vehicle as when you initially purchased it. Although it could be more expensive than aftermarket body parts, it will never damage your car. These components were custom-made for your car and undergo extensive testing by industry professionals before installation.
No Trouble in Finding
Feel free to visit the dealership without delay if you ever need a replacement for any spare part in your car. Either they'll get it for you or give it to you simultaneously. Since the company employed these parts without sacrificing performance, finding them will be easy.
What are OEM parts?
The designation "OEM" says it all: the same business that made the original product for the carmaker also makes the replacement part. It is identical to the original on your vehicle but without the brand name. These are functionally equivalent to OEM parts; however, they are less expensive because the manufacturer's logo isn't required.
Disadvantages of OEM car parts
Difficulty in availability
The availability of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components is restricted to the firm dealership or a few approved dealerships, making it difficult to obtain these parts in rural parts of India, unlike replacement parts that may be purchased locally. You may have gone to great lengths to locate those parts, often in excruciating pain.
Cannot match the quality of some parts
Yes, you read it correctly; often, you pay a premium for these components, assuming they will be of the highest quality. Some aftermarket or locally available companies offer higher-quality auto components at a lower price than OEM parts, which means you can save a little money. These brands provide parts that are equally as good as, if not better, OEM parts, which cost more because of the name recognition.
Conclusion
While original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and authentic car components are functionally the same, you may tell them apart by looking for the manufacturer's logo when you buy car parts online. The two components are identical in quality and come with matching guarantees. The real deal, nevertheless, comes at a somewhat higher price because of the logo. If you want to keep repair costs down and keep your car's resale value high, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components are a fantastic option.
