Umbrellas and automobiles are different. Not just because of size, function, and cost. But for a reason we seldom stop to consider. A person can use an umbrella without buying another product. An automobile, by contrast, is useless without fuel, oil, repair services, spare parts, not to mention streets and roads. The humble umbrella, therefore, is a rugged individual, so to speak, delivering value to its user irrespective of any other product. The mighty auto, by contrast, is a team player completely dependent on other products. So is a razor blade, a tape recorder, a refrigerator, and thousands of other products that work only when combined with others. The television set would stare blankly into the living room if someone somewhere were not transmitting images to it. Even the lowly closet hanger presupposes a rack or bar to hang it on. Each of these is part of a product system. It is precisely their systemic nature that is their main source of economic value. And just as "team players" must play by certain agreed-on rules, systemic products need standards to work. A three-pronged electrical plug doesn't help much if all the wall sockets have only two slots. This distinction between stand-alone and systemic products throws revealing light on an issue that is widening today's information wars all around the world. The French call it la guerre des normes—“the war over standards." Battles over standards are raging in industries as diverse as medical technology, industrial pressure vessels, and cameras.

re: the Reich-Toffler shoulder pat incident, I wouldn’t say that you’re necessarily reading too much into it. Considering that the actor wrote the monologue you’re referring to in the deleted scene, it would make sense for him to consider the implications of that trauma throughout his performance. My overall Angst Read on it is that Reich reacts the way he does to Toffler’s reaction because, even when he’s trying to be nice and supportive to someone, he still manages to scare them. I think he has a sneaking suspicion that all he’s capable of anymore is hurting people.
Hello! I completely forgot that the actor wrote that monologue; thank you. But yeah, I think it does all tie back to this underlying idea that all he can see himself doing is hurt people, that that’s the thing that lies at his core. I think I sort of halfway talked about it somewhere on here in something about freeze vs fight responses, and how that would affect Boyd and Reich’s views of themselves: something about how we tend to view our instincts as being who we really are, and how fight responses can consequently make you feel like you’re fundamentally someone who hurts people.

Alright, let's do the others I've got thoughts on then, in no particular order:
Boyd: I distinctly view his daemon as a rabbit. I take it as a clear given that he's a prey animal by instinct, and not even one that's prey to some things but predator to others; no, he's just prey. Rabbits also play dead, and that was, uh, important to me for him.
Knox: I've been thinking he'd be good with a snake. There's the old mythological association with healing, but that's not really what anyone properly thinks of with them, and that just seems about right for him. I go back and forth on whether or not I think his daemon would be venomous, and I'd be open to whatever other people want to offer up on that one.
Reich: The more I consider other animals, the less I can see his daemon being anything but a wild cat. I knew right off, in the same way Boyd had to be prey, Reich had to be a predator. And I think being a feline suits him better than a canine-- more independent, hunting more on his own than as part of a pack, altogether less social by nature. All of that said, I think it feels more right for his daemon to be one of the smaller wild cats: a lynx, a caracal, something like that, though I don't have one solid one in mind. I just don't know that I see anyone who managed to get sent to Fort Spencer having a typically impressive daemon (like a lion or tiger).
Toffler: Like Boyd, I think he pretty much has to be prey. That said, I wouldn’t give him a daemon that plays dead; his would run. I tend towards the idea of a sheep for him-- the religious associations, mostly, but maybe something about domestication too-- but that's one I'm really not terribly settled on.
Martha: I've really liked the idea of her having a bird daemon for a long time. Mostly vibes, a little bit of something about her getting out in a way no one else does that reminds me of having wings. I'm tending towards water birds when I think more particularly-- geese, swans-- but I haven't got any real reason for it.
Ives: I am so open to any other suggestions, but I am thoroughly amused by the thought of his daemon being a raccoon. Too clever, heightened senses (at least to my understanding), lots of behaviors based around food. Eating things that are Not Intended For Consumption and distinctly inconveniencing those around them in the process.
Slauson: I don't think I've put nearly enough thought into this (by which I mean I just thought of it now and I kind of like it), but I tend towards him having an eagle (yeah, yeah, I know, bit on the nose with the national connotations, but again, all of this part is just what comes to me off the top of my head. Totally accepting different suggestions). They tend to look impressive, but they are scavengers too, and aside from the cannibalism plot points, I just. Like the idea of someone nearer to leading the Mexican-American war having that going on.
I admit to having not even a direction in which to head for George and Cleaves, so I'd definitely like to hear what anyone else thinks about that. This ran on longer than I meant for it to, but I guess I never really have interacted in anything like this before. Hope this is kind of interesting.
I feel like if the gang were animals Hart would be a squirrel but mainly because of his love for nuts & tendency to hide them throughout his desk drawers. Making him a deer would also be fun bc his name. Both very on the nose but hey

every time i message someone about ravenous i’m like “are they ready for the conversation about how Boyd and Ives are possessed by ghosts?” and the answer is always “no,” but it’s “yes” in my heart…
#Hart is also possessed by ghosts and he got the funniest combination tbh…#George AND Toffler… can you imagine the Judgement#he goes to sleep and every night they’re just like FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU#GOD help him if he had Reich as well#Boyd and Ives DEFINITELY did but Ives doesn’t give a fuck about the ghosts#he has sooooooo many he doesn’t even care#Boyd is haunted by his entire army unit and also Reich which is truly Awful RIP to him#and then they all get Cleaves and Knox for a few days which surely added to the chaos#Boyd just mentions this haunting situation vaguely as nightmares#but there are very deliberate choices in the dialogue and physicality of the characters to show that it also impacts them while awake#that they truly have ABSORBED the people they’ve eaten#almost to the point of possession at times#and it’s REEEEEEAAAAAAALLY interesting!!!!!#if there was ever a Ravenous zine i would absolutely write a piece on this#bc i have some Big Feelings about it (as many of you know)#Anyway… go read the fic i wrote about this concept… i’m still very proud of it#ravenous 1999

the old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born. now is the time of monsters
I'm beginning to think that some massive changes have taken place not just to the world around us, but to us. How we think about people around us, how we speak, how we love, how we form thoughts, where those thoughts come from.
As much as I disagree with (at least, the surface interpretation of) Julian Jaynes' ideas about the "bicameral mind" I have to say that what I presently suspect is happening to the human mind, emotions, and cognition in the 21st century, is producing a very very different kind of character than the 20th Century Person. Possibly on the level which he believed to be the case with the shift away from his proposed Bicameral Mind.
In a way, we have a new Bicameral Mind: our native thoughts, and the distributed crowd-sourced digital brain that we have spent most of our time in interaction with since the 2010s.
Our world changed drastically and we are changing with it.
This is just my uninformed 2c, my feelings, I'm not like. A Credentialed Expert (tm) of any kind I think that in many cases, there is a lot of artistic and intellectual work of prior to the 21st century that will be illegible to a lot of 21st Century People because the cultural context will be so drastically different and they will have no way to reach across that gap.
I genuinely believe many social concepts we grew up taking for granted - the idea of a separate self proven against the outside world, away from one's parents (in the West, this may actually be a relic of a period of time encompassing the Age of Sail and Industrial Revolution); in a community very different from oneself...
Even more, I begin to think that how *romantic love* was constructed in the 20th century, is very different now to the degree that moderns simply cannot relate to older portrayals of romance.
20th Century People can relate to the minds and feelings of 19th Century People better than 21st Century People can relate to a large cohort of 20th Century People.
It is easier for a Gen Xr to insert themselves into the mindset of a dead person living during the Great Depression than it is for a lot of Zoomers and Alphas to relate to a Gen Xr's teen years.

everyone has their categories of little guys they gravitate towards but i kind of realized the one for me that has the most guys in it is probably "autistic-coded, well meaning, soft spoken christian guy" bonus points if they have a romantic (implied)/devoted relationship with another man who is more masculine than him
#not going to tag them individually so they dont clog up up their character tags but in order:#harry goodsir & john irving (the terror) | pvt toffler (ravenous) | boyd “bible” swan (fury) | oberleutnant robert ehrenberg (das boot 2018#DARK HAIRED BITCHES CAPABLE OF THE MOST SAD EXPRESSIONS YOUVE EVER SEEN ON A GROWN MAN#also realizing that toffler looks like the love child of goodving#boyd and don have something very deep and meaningful but don still surprises boyd despite their bond its very cute and miserable#toffler has reich who went on a murderous rampage when toffler was not only hurt but killed - reich loved toffler even if he tormented him#no but re: ehrenberg--#i was talking to harper about roberts devotion to hoffmann with hoffmann being an unintentional christ figure in the series and i went on#a long tangent about it and harper had to be like “actually they do genuinely make the hoffmann christ comparison later in the series” and#i sat there like 😲 like okay so i'm not delusional it really is there

Ives/Toffler manifesto
Toffler watches over him and prays for him (and is SO PSYCHED to do so! Praying! His main Thing!) when he first arrives.
Toffler helps him get dressed when he dramatically jumps out of bed naked (and I could be mistaken but I feel like Toffler makes a shocked noise when he uh reveals himself.)
Toffler's so excited that Ives is awake that he's reduced to skidding up to Hart and Boyd and just sort of happily jumping in place to announce the news.
On the hike to the cave, while everyone shares a tent Ives suggests a rhyme for Toffler's hymn that he's working on and Toffler is just elated about it and Ives smiles slightly.
Ives can't resist the tantalizing smell of his blood after he gets injured thus the "HE WAS LICKING MEEEE" scene.
And then of course the creepy cannibalistic homoeroticism of Ives chasing him through the woods and eating him! This is the homoerotic cannibalism movie after all!
#going to do a short fic on this at some point I think#it would be fucked up but very fun#Toffler is entirely charmed by Ives' Traumatized (through no fault of his own!!!) Man Of God persona that he shows up as#and Ives already fully intending to murder a majority of them is like. hmmm delicious little weird man :)#playing with his food!#ravenous 1999#personal (ok to rb)
