Do you conlang? I was wondering if you had naming languages (or possibly even more developed ones) for pulling the words you use. I tried to search your blog but didn't find anything, wouldn't be surprised if the feature is just busted tho. Your worldbuilding is wonderful and I particularly enjoy the anthropological and linguistic elements.

Ok the thing is I had kind of decided I was not going to do any conlanging because I don't feel like I'm equipped to do a good job of it, like was fully like "I'm just going to do JUST enough that it doesn't fail an immediate sniff test and is more thoughtful than just keysmashing and putting in vowels". And then have kinda been conlanging anyway (though not to a very deep and serious extent. I maybe have like....an above average comprehension of how language construction works via willingness to research, but that's not saying much, also I can never remember the meanings of most linguistic terms like 'frictives' or etc off the top of my head. I'm just kinda raw dogging it with a vague conceptualization of what these things mean)

I do at least have a naming language for Wardi (and more basic rules for other established languages) but the rudimentary forms of it were devised with methods much shakier and less linguistically viable than even the most basic naming language schemes, and I only went back over it LONG after I had already made a bunch of words so there's some inconsistencies with consonant presence and usage. (This can at least be justified because it IS a language that would have a lot of loanwords and would be heavily influenced by other language groups- Burri being by far the most significant, Highland-Finnic and Yuroma-Lowlands also being large contributors)

The 'method' I used was:

-Skip basic construction elements and fully move into devising necessary name words, with at least a Vibe of what consonants are going to be common and how pronunciation works -Identify some roots out of the established words and their meanings. Establish an ongoing glossary of known roots/words. -Construct new words based in root words, or as obvious extensions/variants of established words. -Get really involved in how the literal meanings of some words might not translate properly to english, mostly use this to produce a glossary of in-universe slang. -Realize that I probably should have at least some very basic internal consistency at this point. -Google search tutorials on writing a naming language. -Reverse engineer a naming language out of established words, and ascribe all remaining inconsistencies to being loanwords or just the mysteries of life or whatever.

I do at least have some strongly established pronunciation rules and a sense of broad regional dialect/accents.

-'ai' words are almost always pronounced with a long 'aye' sound.

-There is no 'Z' or 'X' sound, a Wardi speaker pronouncing 'zebra' would go for 'tsee-brah', and would attempt 'xylophone' as 'ssye-lohp-hon'

-'V' sounds are nearly absent and occur only in loanwords, and tend to be pronounced with a 'W' sound. 'Virsum' is a Highland word (pronounced 'veer-soom') denoting ancestry, a Wardi speaker would go 'weer-sum'.

-'Ch' spellings almost always imply a soft 'chuh' sound when appearing after an E, I, or O (pelatoche= pel-ah-toh-chey), but a hard 'kh' sound after an A or U (odomache= oh-doh-mah-khe). When at the start of a word, it's usually a soft 'ch' unless followed by an 'i' sound (chin (dog) is pronounced with a hard K 'khiin', cholem (salt) is pronounced with a soft Ch 'cho-lehm')

-Western Wardin has strong Burri cultural and linguistic influence, and a distinct accent- one of the most pronounced differences is use of the ñ sound in 'nn' words. The western city of Ephennos is pronounced 'ey-fey-nyos' by most residents, the southeastern city of Erubinnos is pronounced 'eh-roo-been-nos' by most residents. Palo's surname 'Apolynnon' is pronounced 'A-puh-lee-nyon' in the Burri and western Wardi dialects (which is the 'proper' pronunciation, given that it's a Kos name), but will generally be spoken as 'Ah-poh-leen-non' in the south and east.

-R's are rolled in Highland-Finnic words. Rolling R's is common in far northern rural Wardi dialects but no others. Most urban Wardi speakers consider rolling R's sort of a hick thing, and often think it sounds stupid or at least uneducated. (Brakul's name should be pronounced with a brief rolled 'r', short 'ah' and long 'uul', but is generally being pronounced by his south-southeastern compatriots with a long unrolled 'Brah' sound).

Anyway not really a sturdy construction that will hold up to the scrutiny of someone well equipped for linguistics but not pure bullshit either.

#I actually did just make a post about this on my sideblog LOL I think in spite of my deciding not to conlang this is going to go full #full conlanging at some point #The main issue is that the narrative/dialogue is being written as an english 'translation' (IE the characters are speaking in their actual #tongues and it's being translated to english with accurate meaning but non-literal treatment)#Which you might say like 'Uh Yeah No Shit' but I think approaching it with that mindset at the forefront does have a different effect than #just fully writing in english. Like there's some mindfulness to what they actually might be saying and what literal meanings should be #retained to form a better understanding of the culture and what should be 'translated' non-literally but with accurate meaning #(And what should be not translated at all)#But yeah there's very little motivation for conlanging besides Pure Fun because VERY few Wardi words beyond animal/people/place names #will make it into the actual text. Like the only things I leave 'untranslated' are very key or untranslatable concepts that will be #better understood through implication than attempts to convey the meaning in english #Like the epithet 'ganmachen' is used to compliment positive traits associated with the ox zodiac sign or affectionately tease #negative ones. This idea can be established pretty naturally without exposition dumps because the zodiac signs are of cultural #importance and will come up frequently. The meaning can get across to the reader pretty well if properly set up.#So like leaving it as 'ganmachen' you can get 'oh this is an affectionate reference to an auspicious zodiac sign' but translating #it as the actual meaning of 'ox-faced' is inevitably going to come across as 'you look like a cow' regardless of any zodiac angle #^(pretty much retyped tags from other post)#Another aspect is there's a few characters that have Wardi as a second language and some of whom don't have a solid grasp on it #And I want to convey this in dialogue (which is being written in english) but I don't want it to just be like. Random '''broken''' english #like I want there to be an internal consistency to what parts of the language they have difficulties with (which then has implications for #how each language's grammar/conjugation/etc works). Like Brakul is fairly fluent in Wardi at the time of the story but still struggles #with some of the conjugation (which is inflectional in Wardi) especially future/preterite tense. So he'll sometimes just use the #verb unconjugated or inappropriately in present tense. Though this doesn't come across as starkly in text because it's #written in english. Like his future tense Wardi is depicted as like 'I am to talk with him later' instead of 'I'll talk with him later'#Which sounds unnatural but not like fully incorrect #But it would sound much more Off in Wardi. Spanish might be a better example like it would be like him approaching it with #'Voy a hablar con él más tarde' or maybe 'Hablo con él más tarde' instead of 'Hablaré con él más tarde'#(I THINK. I'm not a fluent spanish speaker sorry if the latter has anything wrong with it too)

..I had actually made a lot more progress than just this one page, but did too much without publishing so the page froze and most of it ended up not saving. Thankfully, though, at least some of what I’d done tonight did get kept ‑ so hopefully I can use it as a template to finish off the rest!

it’s kind of sad how aizawa seems to be the only teacher/adult to see through katsuki. everyone else teases him and makes light of him being a grump but he’s been through so much shit and still persists and then he gets called aggressive and intense in his pursuit of what he wants. and to top it all off he’s being gaslight by his favorite hero and deku… man. i want everybody to leave him alone

so, back in october i decided i was gonna quit drinking- almost completely.

i may have the occasional drink here and there, but my partying days are over. my body physically cannot handle getting drunk, it’s not worth it and since having a couple blackout nights i get anxious when i get anything past tipsy- same goes for weed, i like a light, floaty buzz, but getting absolutely blasted sucks

anyways. california sober exie! and it’s been going great. i don’t miss drinking at all, and i’ve been discovering that the de-alcoholized drinks are really fuckin good. i love the taste of different boozes, just don’t like the way my body falls apart. now i can enjoy a “drink” and know i won’t be in excruciating pain!

but the biggest thing has been how supportive my friends have been. no one’s pushed or prodded, they just accept that i will go out with them but not drink, and they’ve even applauded me for it- for making the best choice for myself. and that feels really, really good.

coming from the child of a recovered alcoholic, it’s a really big deal that i could 1) acknowledge the beginnings of a problem for myself and 2) commit to changing before it actually became an issue in my life. it’s also a huge deal to have the people around me support it unconditionally

it’s so much easier to actually go out and have fun- i don’t have to worry about what stupid or embarrassing things i might do or say. i don’t have to wake up the next day horrified by the realization that i can’t remember the night before. i don’t have to have benadryl and three types of painkillers on hand to manage the hangover for the next day or two

idk. idk what this is. just a stream of consciousness. i’ve been having a weird time mentally lately and i’m going to hangout with some buddies tomorrow and “drink” so just musing on how that’s gonna go. haven’t seen some of them in a hot minute. but they’re all so lovely i know they won’t judge lol

it's not even that "sometimes the curtains aren't just blue, sometimes they represent something" it's that "the curtains are never just blue"

#it does technically depend to what level you are investigating the meanings of things but the take is basically #0th layer: the curtains are just blue. they have no meaning it is an arbitrary description with no bearing on anything else.#0.5th layer: maybe the curtains AREN'T just blue. maybe this can tell us the character's favourite colour is blue!#1st layer: oftentimes the curtains AREN'T just blue. the colour blue commonly or textually is a symbol of X and the author specifically -#-uses the blue curtains to indicate Y about the character.#^ Frequently this is where the discussion leads. talking about how some people refuse to engage with metaphor or read into anything that's #not told directly to you. and this is useful. reading into stuff can reveal that the author is hiding metaphors all over the place etc BUT #2nd layer: The curtains are NEVER just blue. Even if the author does not intend for the blue curtains to tell us anything deeper than -#giving a description of the curtains. the author grew up in a specific time and specific society and was effected by these things.#maybe we can infer that the author thinks that having a room with a window is standard. that curtains are normal. -#Maybe the author associates the colour blue with specific type of people. (for example: blue has a gendered association. if the author #describes a boys room as having blue curtains then this decision was impacted by the authors upbringing and environment.)#whether consciously or not everything means something and everybody has a set of things that they believe are normal and meaningless -#which are ENTIRELY informed by their culture. A white american reads a book. it is not clear where the book takes place. the white #american assumes it takes place in a city in the USA and that the main character is white. my hard drive is defective and I was really stressed out for like 20 minutes but the company is able to replace it and try to recover everything and even covering the shipping costs to do it.

#I checked like 3 times about the price but I don't have to pay anything for it #if it was over $150 to repair it i was going to buy a new one #but their chat bot was surprisingly effective #and the live agent was very quick to answer all my questions and set everything up to get it fixed #im not usually one to recommend brands but Seagate hard drive has fantastic customer service #I'll evaluate again once everything gets sorted out (which might take a while since i have to ship it to the states) but so far; fantastic #(versus telus not letting me change my account name after two years of trying to contact them)#(I've talked to so many people and nobody is able to do it)#(i have to call a specific line on the phone to get transferred to the people that might be able to do it)#(no in person locations will do it - they offered to let me use their store phone to call but the entire issue is im hoh and can't do calls)#anyways. seagate so far has wonderful customer service 10/10

a large amount of time I've been spending on -untitled undefined scope original fiction project- since the last time I posted about it has been trying to develop the protagonist concept I came up with last summer or whatever into like, a character that would feel real and era appropriate.

it's fun research to do. naturally a lot of the details I assigned to her are things that I already think are cool, so it's been a lot of fun trying to trace her traits back through the relatively recent past, getting reminded of how much things have changed, or where the gaps in my intuition are, and then doing a flurry of reading to get a sense for exactly how someone like her and the people around her could have happened and what her life was probably like leading up to her present day. hopefully this results in some good good verisimilitude.

#I wrote a short story from her perspective over the holidays and then didn't know how to continue it #and then I got distracted by real life stuff for a few months #I forget if I posted about that #and then I've been picking through archive dot org for the last few weeks looking at this stuff #the last big rabbit hole was trying to get a better feel for era appropriate ts/tv subculture #the current one I'm looking at is how she would've gotten into language learning and how that would've worked #nettle has been prodding me about the setting thing lately so I've been thinking about that more too #probably the biggest hurdle by far is figuring out how I want to play that #and how I want the thing to be divided up #since the original coc scenario I'm developing this out of is centered on a flight from LA to honolulu #and the airport dungeon was definitely meant to be a hook for a larger campaign #some amount of it is going to cover protag lady's failed life in LA and some of it is going to be worse things happening in hawaii #but it's like. how much do I want to balance it one way or the other #and realistically how much does the aesthetics of 20th century air travel add to the story #besides me personally thinking it's compelling ofc #a lot of what I find compelling about hawaii is that it's an east/west cultural crossroads and realistically that's also true of socal #and I can wax poetic about socal as much as I want without worrying all that much about mishandling something #and there's also a lot of socal specific history along similar parallels to pull from that I'm more familiar with #I guess it comes down to whether curiosity re: 'doing it right' is enough of a motivator to do the increased amount of research #which I guess it has so far with the above character details. so hopefully that will continue #but it also feels like using machine translation a bit yknow. it's hard to know how effectively I'll be able to sanity check #although depending on where this goes I might be able to get other people involved to sensitivity read down the line #with most of the creative things I do I just have a tendency to always rely really heavily on figuring things out myself #I also want protag lady to have a Cool Car and idk how to get that from point a to point b narratively #this is like an entire second or third post's worth of tags but I don't feel like unfucking this so whatever. suffer. I guess.

And the people that judge us for having that joy in our hearts lose their own life, because they spend too much time judging someone else's life instead of doing something with their own. FUCK them

this is one of my favorite asks and i love you

#nobody will ever stop me from getting excited about things i like #i just always feel like i'm not allowed to share that excitement with anybody directly because of being made fun of in the past #or like i at least have to tone it down by like 99% and make it very brief #because of fear of rejection so i keep it to myself contained in my own space #sometimes i really wanna talk about my favorite things with somebody but i'm like #'nobody knows or cares about this. what if i send something and they hate it and tell me it's horrible'#(a reaction i've been the most used to. either that or just silence)#and i wouldn't know who would actually be interested or if i would be putting them in a situation #where they're not interested at all but they're too nice to say it and then i feel annoying if i keep talking about it #because now even if it isn't SAID that they hate it i still always feel like people are thinking that behind it all #so like if somebody came at me right now telling me everything i like is horrible #that itself wouldn't really bother me because i could just block and continue life without a second thought about that person specifically #because that's just unnecessary and rude regardless of what it's about and i would assume it's just somebody looking to stir things up #delete/block. not taking it personally and not worth thinking about #but it's the anxiety built up from it happening for so long and so consistently from so many people and some that i used to be close to #that now it feels to me that everybody feels that way even if i know LOGICALLY that it isn't true. the feeling is still there #it's one of the long-term effects that are so hard to get rid of once they're set #this is just another thing about myself to work on for probably my entire life #but russ has been helping me with so much lately it's unbelievable

Just got a savefile in this week's DU cycle titled "The Trophy Husbands" cuz that's literally all it is and it's so funny. I'm just here sitting and clicking barely anything as the bosses drop like flies.

#ariambles #i love du Sometimes (only sometimes cuz there are cycles that is So Shit which doesnt help with my alrdy ass rng luck)#for this cycle i needed remembrance. preservation. harmony. and abundance to get the full effect of the weighted curio #but i got worried seeing the argenti boss cuz i always fight him using my own argenti (much easier that way for me)#and my trailblazer isnt That properly built but i was like: its du so maybe itd be fine #trailblazer 1st slot. then sunday. then luocha. and finally geppie to complete the weighted curio requirement #and it wasnt until halfway through the run did i realize that the blessings and equations is set up for hunt characters #so its all about Speed. and if theres anything that my stelle has. its speed. which... combined with the equations and all the #blessings i got... resulted in a savefile where all stelle literally needs to do is get mem out. basic atk. basic atk. mem atk.#sunday e to action advance her. ultimate. basic atk. advanced with mem. basc atk. mem atk. battle end #sunday was just there to cheer her on. luocha was just there to have his field up for the atk buff (e2 effect). and geppie did Nothing #geppie was literally just 🧍‍♂️ tbf i only needed him for the preservation requirement but he did NOTHING AT ALL #cuz the enemies kept dying too quickly before his turn even started. the only time he got One(1) attack was at the start before #i got all my blessings which is both Fair and Unfair cuz at least he did Something but that was before any equations activated

Theory with no coherent proof on my part: brenner only visibly ages rapidly when a portal is open.

#brenner 'dies' very early on after rhe portal opens in s1 so we dont see the effects #but in s4 he looks considerably older.#then in s5 he apparently has a whole bald cap - portal that opened at the end of s4 has been open for approx 1.5 years #theres the tie in to the ptsd/trauma metaphor with the UD representing repressed memories #or repressed memories aka 'lost time' in someone memory #the whole thing where ppl with traumatic childhoods cant remember their childhoods very well and it comes back sooner or later #i wonder if there is a supernatural tie into that in st? like when a portal opens to the UD all that 'lost time' suddenly is allowed back #into the light aka out of the subconscious and into the conscious re flashbacks and memory retrieval #i dont believe NINA at all beyond the flashbacks el has before brenner got involved #bc it seems to me that brenner possibly took advtg of els vulnerable state to possibly manipulate her memory retrieval #which irl has been a long time point of controversy which is psychologists convinving patients that they have memories of trauma #they dont actually have. which idk how valid that is but brenner is a psychologist so if anyone he could find a way #also when the 'lost time' comes back to the surface brenner ages bc of those time loops begin to unravel. the real years brenner has lived #take its toll rather than him de aging as time loops back again to the beginning #very dr who of him. or at least every time he dies its another time loop thats created except from our perspective as the audience we #wouldnt know. because we are only watching from a set linear timeline (1983-1986) and we dont see the time line resetting itself #since all the timelines are similar enough with only small differences ('easter eggs')#tying this into the wheelers- their name literally means 'creator/operator of wheels' aka time loops. so are they The Source?#with the subtext surrounding 'truths' and 'lies' in ST i dont necessarily believe all timeloops are created equal #one must be the 'true' timeline while the others must be 'lies'. aka lonnie saying how people sometimes make things up 'to cope'#that and the heavy subtext behind hawkins being a cursed town. not necessarily anywhere else in the US #and how you can only open portals in hawkins per alexei #makes me thinks these arent legitimate timeloops. like time isnt physically looping back and rerunning events bc otherwise it wouldnt only #affect one small town in indiana. also we dont see the UD/the MF be able to affect time itself but rather ppls perception of time aka #mind control and memories. meaning that could it be time isnt actually looping but rather everyone in hawkins has their memories wiped and #recreated every time there is an inciting incident (which is unknown)#^this doesnt really explain how brenner is able to revive every time he dies unless brenner is actually an admin of this system and lives #'outside' the time loop. so. brenner is a video game character actually whos actual player is blissfully safe from harm outside of the the #computer screen #isnt this just the plot of the matrix. with 'the source' (the central computing core aka the wheelers?) and keymakers etc etc

gin, we need your critical opinion about megalopolis. was it really that bad?

i mean.

is it unwatchable? no. but also it is not good for sure. would love for it to be a case of "so bad it circles back being somehow good", but unfortunately no, becasue in order to achieve such a thing coppola should have gone camp and embraced the style instead of taking himself too seriously.

there are. ideas. that considered by themselves sort of make sense if you are desperate to find sense in this insanity of a movie, but whether within or without context for the large part they remain disjointed. and are anyway very cringe at core. i don't know how to put it kindly but the script just sucks. and choices were made.

#continuing in the tags because i'm embarassed lol i am no expert at all and just like watching movies #before and after watching it myself i read and listened to opinions coming from both sides as one does and #listen the movie ain't that deep #what moves some people to call it a masterpiece is essentially the same that moves other call it a disappointment: - this constant quoting #(both in the dialogues and in the visuals) something else something cool #without paying the due attention as to whether each quote is coherent to the context in which it is being used or adds any value to the #general narration #- but also this. delirious. thing with lights and cgi (it should have been practical effects!!) and. editing. that wants to be something bu #it's genuinely just outdated�� ridicolous‚ i found it kinda offending even lol #i appreciate a genuine homage to the arts as the next guy but citations aren't enough #this movie created some talk about the duality of cinema as a form of art and entertainment which isn't entirely out pf place but if you #watch megalopolis you will easily see the entertainment aspect isn't there because the movie sucks‚ and that the art aspect is shallow #anyway i forgot all the million things i wanted to add so very quickly:#director: gave himself five stars on letterboxd. bad #writing: bad #editing: bad #photography: okayish #music: don't even remember it #acting: there's only so much an actor can do when their characters are unflattering #set & costume design: i don't understand why the future utopia looks like 10s fast fashion clodius and wow are the only ones who get it. ba #sorry for the nonsense hope my answer is at least more enjoyable than watching megalopolis ha-ha (':#gin answer
