Women's hockey players didn't start being inducted into the HHOF until 2010. There are 2 spaces for them each year. Use them both. Induct the maximum amount you can, same as you do for all the other spots

📕 Taking Stock: Public Memory and the Retelling of Hockey in Canada

To commemorate specific groups of athletes does more than historicize a sport; it can serve as an act of advocacy and activism for marginalized athletes more generally as recognition of their humanity. The politics of recognition become salient far beyond access to and participation in sport because marginalization can carry on in the form of canonization or obscurity. Furthermore, when segregation and racial discrimination on the playing field are memorialized as the way it was, the act of exclusion fortuitously disappears. The history of racial exclusion becomes as obvious as the glass that encloses these historical exhibits but is equally as inconspicuous.

Murray G Phillips categorizes sports museums/halls of fame into four general groups: academic, corporate, community, and vernacular. The HHOF is delineated as a corporate museum for the following reasons: It employs more marketing and public relations type staff than museum professionals; public education is not a high priority; it uses its platform to influence public opinion, serving as a form of advertising; and it relies heavily on collective nostalgia as a way to defect/minimize controversial, marginalized, and/or contested histories. Nostalgia is key to the (re)production of sport as a cultural artifact. Nostalgia references "an emotional component" and we learn what things, which people, and which spaces are deserving of emotional investment.

i love how all-in everyone has gone on “flower” as a nickname. i mean, obviously most players have nicknames and you’re familiar with your team’s nicknames, but i think most of us would be flummoxed for a second if somebody referred to flower as marc-andré. also this light show is so pretty. what a vibe.

i was at the us hhof the other day and they had a book listing all the us born players in the nhl last season and i really like how every time i look at this i see something else thats wrong

I just remembered that story from last summer during my time in Toronto when I dragged my Polish roommate/friend through the HHOF and almost cried when I stood in front of the Stanley Cup and she was like “what is that?” and that dude standing next to us looked so shocked and I laughed so hard
