Entering into urban lore relatively recently is the purple squirrel phenomenon. And theories abound. The first purple rodent was purportedly spotted in 1997 in Minnesota. The second sighting wasn’t until 2008 when photos of a purple squirrel made the newspapers in England. Then, in 2012 a Pennsylvanian couple trapped a purple squirrel. Before releasing the animal they took several photos of it that gained international internet attention. Many species of animals with silver or gray fur can appear to have a lavender hue under certain lighting conditions and this could account for some purple squirrel sightings, however, it can’t explain the intense purplish shade of the animal photographed in England or the specimen captured in Pennsylvania. Many people dismiss the photos as hoaxes saying the images have been digitally altered or the animals were dyed. But other people believe purple squirrels could actually exist and have offered varying explanations. Some suggest the animals came into contact with discarded ink toner, while others claim a tumble into the reservoir of a porta-potty chemical toilet could have tinged their fur. Another theory proposed their fur became stained while feeding on pokeberries which are used by crafters to produce organic dyes for textiles. There has also been some disconcerting conjecture that their color could be caused by the ingestion of large amounts of bromide, a waste product of the natural gas mining industry. Naturally occurring bromine-like compounds allow some species of sea snails to produce purple secretions, but bromine is not normally found in land mammals. Whatever the case, the actual existence of these squirrels remains unproven, thus earning our little purple friends urban legend status. You now have your Google rabbit hole for the evening. you got with butcher when your daughter was 2 and a half. the first time he met her was at her third birthday party, it wasn’t supposed to be that way but the bouncy castle wouldn’t inflate and you thought you were going to pass out from stress so you called butcher- who of course comes straight away

your daughter is TERRIFIED of him the first time she meets him. like, he’s big and scary looking. also not a lot of men come to your house so one that looks like butcher feels extra daunting for her as a lil 3 year old. you coax her into showing billy her birthday presents and she grabs his hand and leads him into the living room. she looks so small compared to him and that’s when butcher decides he wants to be a part of this little girls life for as long as he can (hopefully forever). he takes a genuine interest in all the books, plushies and toys that she’s showing him

he meets her again a few months later, you’re both still going steady and your daughter keeps asking when the ‘big man’ is coming back because she wants to show him more of her plushies. you invite him round for dinner and your daughter basically takes all his attention. she’ll run up to him with different books and ask him to read them. which he does- she loves it because he does all the silly voices

she struggles with his name so just calls him butch. even as she gets older, she never calls him anything else

you stay together until she’s like 6 and then the break up happens. he’s known your daughter for nearly 4 years and he loves her and she loves him- probably her favourite person in the whole world so she still sees him often

she never called him dad but when her friends talk about stuff their dad does for them, she’ll always say that “her butch” does that

you keep seeing each other but it’s so off and on again. it’s not fair for your daughter to get stuck in the middle so every time he spends the night- he leaves before she goes to school

eventually she clocks on and realises because she sees him sneaking out on her way to the bathroom. he looks nervous, “hey kid…just uh…your mom asked me to stay last night”- he can’t lie to her

she doesn’t care, she just asks him to make her some oatmeal because he makes it the best

KAPPA

Kappa are aquatic reptilian creatures found in Japanese folklore. They thrive in rivers and streams, excelling in swimming. They have scaly skin in various earthy hues, webbed hands and feet, and a turtle-like beak and shell. Kappa possess a dish-like depression on their skulls, which must be kept wet to survive.

These creatures can live alone or in family groups, befriending other yokai and humans. They're proud, honorable, and intelligent, able to learn human languages and possessing medical skills. Kappa are omnivores, with a taste for raw innards, especially human anuses, and cucumbers. They enjoy mischief, sumo wrestling, and games like shogi.

Fae Folk

The Fae Folk, or Faeries, are a diverse species of liminal beings whose very nature is fluid and flexible. Even though in culture they are rigid and orderly, the rules of that order are paradoxically able to shift and adapt to the given needs of the Fae. They are beings of magic and nature, and as such have viewpoints that seem alien to others, but patterns can be found in their thinking process. Technically immortal in that death as we recognize it was not an actual process in their native realm, it was simply a process of changing from one state of being to another, like becoming a tree or turning into wind. It was only after the collapse of their realm did the Fae truly experience death for the first time. Beyond that, they do not age physically and their appearances are usually not indicative of their actual nature. They are natural magic users, and they tend to be baffled at the idea that people actually need to learn how to enact magic.

Creepen, Category-1 Hunter

Creepen is a field hunter for SANCT and the perspective character for the dreams that shape the world of Sanct. He is a Category-1 Hunter, the lowest of the four achievable categories for Hunters within the organization. He is currently serving as a Facility hunter pending the reconstruction of his home, following an altercation with another SANCT Hunter that resulted in its destruction.

His Sanct weapon is a standard-issue Sanctuary Broadsword, a sword typically given to Category-1 Hunters. The edge is built almost entirely from Sword Material, making it incredibly effective for both defeating and deterring monsters. These powerful swords are often issued to Category-1 Hunters to compensate for their lack of special abilities.
