REDACTED verse - Those that stood above the rest
Summary: Everyone in D.A.M.N simp for the power couple at least a little bit - the Vampire Prince of Dahlia and the Electro Energetic. Gavin and the Freelancer would be lying if they said they haven't been watching them... respectfully.
TW: [Swearing], [Profanity], [Explicit implications courtesy of Gavin, of course] & [Oblivious narrators]
Apologies for any grammatical or spelling errors because I wrote this the whole night and only edited it once. I’ll do the editing process again tomorrow morning.
-
Life as a student in D.A.M.N is nothing like regular colleges or universities. While the environment is hectic with exams, assignments and teachers with sticks up their asses - there's also a hint of craziness thrown into the mix. You can never really predict how your day would go here in the academy, and to most of the students, it's the typical college experience you'll get everywhere. Just... taken to the next level.
That's what you get for a magical academy, after all.
An Air Elemental would accidentally shatter the windows in a classroom with a powerful gust of wind on a random ass Tuesday because she was laughing too hard. A Graviton Energetic would sneeze, and suddenly, the gravity in the music room would stick the instruments on the ceilings. The entire soccer team would fall flat on the grassy field, snoozing because the Serenity Daemon playing as the Goalkeeper uses too much magic to calm their anxious Sweeper during his first play with the team.
With so many Empowered creatures of all kinds attending D.A.M.N, there's never a dull moment. You learned that the moment a loud growl came from the Debate Club on your second week as a student. A Wolf Shifter had gotten into a heated argument with a Vampire about the toppings that should and shouldn't be on a pizza.
So yeah, typical college life with magic thrown into your daily shenanigans.
Today, you can't help but wonder what sort of excitement would occur as the large clock above the lecture hall ticks by, counting down the second before the class is over.
You check the clock and sigh. Just ten more minutes to go, but it feels like time is creeping forward at such a snail-like pace. Tapping your pen on the open notebook laid before you rather irritability, you just want the lecturer to stop yammering already so you can grab lunch at the food truck parked outside of campus.
Something gently knocks against your knuckle. You tilt your head to the side and meet with Damien's unamused stare; it looks like this is the third time he caught you losing focus in class.
"I told you to grab a snack before class started." Damien whispers, mindful to keep his voice even so the lecturer won't catch them chatting. Sadism Daemons are scary when you piss them off, and the way the lecturer's eyes sweep through the students is more than enough to have them all shut the hell up the moment he begins their topic of the day.
"I was meeting up with Lasko and we lost track of time." You hiss back. Yesterday you made a promise to catch up with the Air Elemental before your first class started to organise the date and invitations for the next game night. Once Lasko starts talking about the things he's comfortable with, he loses his stutter and launches into an animated one-sided conversation. You didn't have the heart to stop him, not when he looks so happy and cute.
Buying that Arkham Horror board game was the right purchase to surprise him with.
While your mind replays the morning you spend with Lasko, Damien rolls his eyes. "Of course you did. Here." He pushes his coffee cup towards you. His fingers linger on the cup for a few seconds to make sure that the coffee remains hot enough to drink.
You grab the cup, grateful for his consideration, and take a big swing. The coffee settles pleasantly in your stomach as warmth spreads within your body.
You're more a tea drinker - the classic Early Grey and Gunpowder Green - but at this instance, coffee would hopefully kick your focus back into gear.
"Thanks, Damien." You said before passing the cup back to him. You peeked at his notebook and wasn't surprised to find that it's packed with notes written in different coloured pens. "Hey, want to grab lunch together after this?"
Damien switched the yellow pen for a red one when the lecturer mentioned something about a topic for the upcoming test. You absentmindedly wondered if it's worth your life stealing his notebook. "Sure. What are you in the mood for?" He asked.
Finally, the lecturer dismisses the class. Chatters erupt as students pack up while some scurry over to the podium to ask a few questions.
You lean against your seat to stretch your back; your notebooks and stationery are already in your school backpack. You're just waiting for Damien now. "I'm craving for a burger and some cheesy loaded fries with a boba tea." God, just thinking about it is already enough to make your mouth watered.
Being a health nut, Damien throws you a judgemental look at your food choice as you two made your way towards the main campus entrance. He easily follows your lead through a crowd of students, and Damien even gently pulls you closer to his side when a student whizzes by on her skateboard.
With so many people talking and laughing around you and Damien, you can't help but hear the conversations hovering around you.
"...had class with them yesterday? Dude, you're so lucky! Did you sit beside them!?"
"Are you fucking crazy? No! I sat two rows behind them, but it was enough to smell their perfume. God, they're so gorgeous - I couldn't focus the entire time!"
"I've heard a few players from the Earth Elemental team tried to invite them to their party this weekend, but they were shot down. Apply cold water on burned area."
"Well, duh. You can't just walk up to them like that! They're one of the hottest people in this academy."
"Yeah, but those players are in one of the most well-respected sports teams in all of Dahlia, and even they can't stand a chance against them!"
Students parted ways as you and Damien approached the gates. Rows of food trucks parked across the street with tables and chairs placed about. The conversations tapered off behind you, along with the hubbub of the academy. You have a pretty good idea of whom those students were talking about. It's been a topic surrounding the academy ever since the start of the new academic year.
Even as an introvert who prefers to hover to your few but close group of friends, you couldn't escape the latest academy gossip.
"Finally, I thought my ears would've fallen off before we could escape," Damien mutters. It's a cloudy Wednesday; dark clouds are rolling above them with an occasional burst of strong breeze cutting through. "You'd think they would just give it a rest already."
The food truck you and Damien stop by displays a menu with a wide variety of food and drinks. From burgers to pasta and desserts ranging from ice-creams to Thai banana pancakes, your stomach begins to growl. You place your order in a hurry, whereas Damien selects a hearty sandwich stuffed with juicy and tender slices of slow-smoked beef brisket with veggies of his choice and chipotle mayo in between two crusty loaves with a bottle of water.
You and Damien grab your meals to sit at one of the vacant tables and enjoy lunch together. Good food and good company - what more could you ask for? Well, other than Damien's tsk-ing and wiping the barbecue sauce that smudged the corner of your cheek like the mother hen he constantly denies to be.
"Can't you eat your food properly, Freelancer? You're getting your fingers dirty too. Give me your hand." Damien demanded halfway through his sandwich. You grin impishly and offer your left hand for Damien to wipe with some tissue while the other is holding a burger. The thick sauce begins to drip.
Soon enough, a familiar voice shouts at them from across the street.
"Yo, Damien! Freelancer! Are you guys, like, having lunch? Can I join!?"
You can't help but beam and wave your hand (that was still holding the burger) high up when Huxley crosses over. Damien squawked with eyes wide in horror when the barbecue sauce got all over the table. He hurried to wipe the table clean while you greeted Huxley.
"Hi, Huxley! Are you grabbing lunch too? Take a seat, man!"
"Thanks a bunch, dude. It's been a while since I hung out with you two."
"We literally had a class together two days ago."
"Two days too long, Damien. I miss you guys."
"Aww, that's super sweet of you, Hux!"
"Oh, for the love of - just go buy something already before the next class starts."
Huxley happily gives Damien two thumbs up before grabbing his food and drink. When he returned to their table, he brought a tray of smoothie consisting of kale, spinach, banana, orange, and vanilla blended into green mush in a plastic cup and a plate of vegan quesadillas.
The moment Huxley sat down, you took a sip of his drink and made a face.
"Yeah, I ask them to hold back on the honey because I like the vanilla more," Huxley explains before tucking in. "Oh! But I can ask them to add more honey if you want. That’s like, totally cool."
You quickly shake your head and clean your palate with your sweet boba tea. "It's cool, Hux. Just wanted to try a sip. You're really into these crazy healthy smoothies."
"They're the bomb, dude. My Mums introduced a few recipes to me when I was a kid, and I basically hooked ever since." The Earth Elemental explains after gulping down a good chunk of the green goo.
"Yeah, well, with the calories you burned up during practice, I guess you can't go wrong with smoothies," Damien added thoughtfully. His sandwich is all gone. He props an elbow on the table and cradles his face in one open palm. "Anyway, what's up, Huxley? Anything new happened?"
"Nah, it's been nothing but the same shit lately. Classes, assignments and practices for the upcoming Elemental & Energetic Games - normal stuff. What about you guys?"
"More or less the same." Damien replies, soundly ignoring your "We're hitting the tournament arc!" outburst. "Planning to organise a study group for the upcoming tests. I expect the two of you will be joining, by the way."
At Damien's words, Huxley beams brighter. Any brighter, you'd need a pair of sunglasses. "For real, dude!? You're like, the best friend ever, Damien! C'mere - lemme give you a hug!"
You snicker when despite Damien's frantic protest, Huxley shoot up from his chair and quickly hugs the Fire Elemental tightly before he has the chance to weasel away.
Also, you didn't miss the chance to snap a quick picture of them to show Gavin tonight.
Unaware of your phone, Damien grumbled when Huxley finally released him, and they sat down again. The three of you continue to chat about everything and anything. Soon, the topic shifts from tests to plans for the weekend.
Huxley snapped his fingers when you mentioned Lasko's gaming night and the tabletop game you recently bought for him so they could all play together.
"I totally forgot about the party! A few guys in my team are having a party this Saturday, and I want to invite you guys and Lasko. Oh! Gavin too! It's going to be a blast, and on Sunday, we can play that new board game."
You and Damien exchange a glance. "Sounds fun. Actually, we've heard about the party just now. How many people are your team members inviting?" You asked, curious.
Huxley takes a moment to ponder before shrugging. He's nearly done with this food. "It's supposed to be just with a few close friends. Nothing too crazy, you know? After the last party that ended with fireworks exploding in someone's bedroom, they want to keep it lowkey."
"Huh. Close friends, but they tried to invite a certain Energetic," Damien interjects. "What's up with that?"
"You heard about that too?" Huxley replied, surprise coloured his tone. "Word travel like, super-fast around campus! It happened, like, yesterday morning!"
Damien let out an annoyed groan and ran a palm down his face. "I think it's safe to say that everyone in this fucking academy is talking about it and nothing else. God, no matter where you go, you can't escape it."
You pat Damien's arm in a comforting manner. "They're hot and popular; people will be talking about them until we all graduate."
"And if it isn't them, people would be talking about their boyfriend," Huxley pointed out, stirring his smoothie languidly. Huxley smiles and offers it to you when you critically stare at it for a tad too long. Against your better judgement, you try again.
Blek! It still tastes the same! Huxley just chuckles and finishes the rest of the smoothie while you seek solace with your boba tea again.
"Besides, it's not often you see an Energetic and Vampire couple walking around," Huxley continued. "I think they're living together too. I mean, that's what I heard."
"Don't tell me you also have a crush on them."
Before Huxley could say anything, you tentatively raise your hand as if you guys are in class. Now you bear Damien's annoyed glance. "I was kinda hardcore crushing on them and their boyfriend before Gavin and I officially got together. They keep to themselves and their boyfriend most of the time, but they're super nice in classes."
The Elemental and Energetic courses often have classes that intermingle every week. However, they're primarily compulsory lessons like magical history, laws regarding coverts and taxonomy of various Empowered creatures.
So you're practically classmates with the hottest Electro Energetic in the academy and had even sat beside them a few times during class. Unlike many of the students who simp for them at a distance.
The power couple of D.A.M.N is certainly interesting, to say the least.
You narrowed your eyes at Damien when he refused to let up his disappointed stare. "Don't lie to me. You simp for them too."
Damien huffs and crosses his arms. "Both of them look good, alright. Anyone with a working pair of eyes could tell from a mile away. They're gorgeous, and the Vampire is hot - so what?"
"They're both super strong too." Huxley unknowingly throws more wood into the fire.
By the time their lunch ended, Damien had demanded they talk about something else, so you jump into plans for the weekend. Party on Saturday and a gaming session on Sunday.
Typical college life.
-
When the time on your phone displays 10.30 PM in glaring bright light and you're still on campus, you know what death feels like.
It's quiet in the cafeteria, save for a small group of students huddled together around tables scattered in various places. Their heads are hunched down as they go over textbooks and assignments. One of the students happens to be a Vampire judging from the blood bag beside his laptop.
A red swirly straw juts out of the bag, and for a brief moment of exhaustion, you entertain the image of the student sipping the blood bag as if it was a Capri Sun.
Just like those students, the reason why you've stayed late in the academy's cafeteria is because of assignments. You know that if you bring your homework back home with you, you won't get any of it done. It's better to stay here and slough through them instead.
Damien would scold and drag you home if he knew. Huxley would be sad and plead for you to rest, and Lasko would put on his guidance counsellor voice and advise you that a good night's sleep would help you think better.
The boys mean well, and you love them for it, but you know yourself better than anyone. If you don't finish these assignments tonight, you would just procrastinate until the deadline punches you right in the face.
You sigh and rub your temple in frustration. You've made good progress so far, but there's still a few left and you want to complete them all before going home. So you resume writing down the essay about the importance of convert and the Department on your laptop, fingers deftly flying all over the keyboard.
Nighttime at D.A.M.N is not as busy as it is in the morning. The students that are going in and out of classes are mostly Vampires and nocturnal animal Shifters. The academy's faculties are also lesser in terms of numbers compared to their morning counterpart.
Twice you've experienced the nightlife at D.A.M.N, and tonight would be your third. You wondered if Gavin is at home already. Hopefully, you can return to the apartment before him. Better wrap this up, then.
The steady rhythm of your fingers on the keyboard and quiet discussion from the group of students slowly lull you to sleep. Hang in there just a little more!
The sound of a Daemon Rifting into this world startles you awake.
"Here you are, Deviant," Gavin said, his ordinarily seductive voice laced with conceal anger. Oh shit, you're in trouble now. "I thought we talked about this."
You have no choice but to face him. Gavin looks devastatingly as sexy as ever; his black t-shirt snugly fits his body to the point that it showcases his biceps tastefully. A pair of dark blue jeans that he just so happens knows will get your heart racing and accompanied by a pair of shiny black Doc Martens boots. A rainbow-coloured bead bracelet is on his right wrist; a gift from Caelum.
You would've swoon at the sight of him if you weren't seconds away from face planting on your laptop.
So instead, you greet him with a, "Whaaa... Gavin?" You rub your eyes and blink at him. "W-What are you doing here? I thought you'd be - " You break out a yawn before sighing. "At home by now."
"Funny. I thought the same thing about you but colour me surprised when Caelum reached out to me while I was grocery shopping — saying that you aren't home even when it's close to midnight." Gavin explains and tilts his head to the spread of books you have before you. "So, want to explain why you're at the campus cafeteria right now instead of in our bed?"
The gears in your head are scrambling to come up with an excuse that's good enough to appease Gavin. So lost in your thoughts that you didn't hear the whispers coming from the nearby students.
"That's the main boyfriend..."
"Holy fuck, an Incubus? Damn, they're insatiable!"
"How often do you think they have orgies? Twice a week?"
" - collecting them like Pokemon!"
Oh fuck it, you can't come up with anything decent. "I'm nearly done with my assignments, Gavin." You assured the worried Incubus. "Just need to write down a few more paragraphs..."
Gavin is undeterred. "Freelancer, we talked about this. It's not healthy that you're making a habit of staying over at campus late at night because of assignments. You're going to burn out like this."
Well yeah, you could feel your body is already seconds away from collapsing but like hell would you admit that to your boyfriend. It's been a long day and an even longer evening. It's a good thing that tomorrow's the weekend.
Gavin startles you once more by leaning against the table and cupping your face in his large hands, so you're forced to look straight into his eyes. He's many things, but to those he deeply trusts and loves, his eyes would always betray the worry and concern he has for you and Caelum; even if his words aren't as forthcoming at times. "My stubborn, enticing Deviant... Are you being a brat again? Not listening to your Dom like you should be?" He purrs.
All of a sudden, your throat suddenly feels like sandpaper, and your heart skips a beat at Gavin's tone. You're very familiar with that tone - it always promises punishment and pleasure mixed together until nothing else exists except for your boyfriend.
But the question now is, how far can you actually push him. So with Gavin still refusing to release your face, you swallow and reply as nonchalantly as you can, "Oh, I don't know about enticing, Gavin. I-I mean, I've been running around campus the whole day. Probably have some barbecue sauce stain on my jacket and - Ow!"
You puff out your cheeks when Gavin pinched them.
"Are you purposely trying to test me, Freelancer? You know that just means more fun for me, and you tie up and helpless on the bed, right?" Gavin is all too happy to remind you, cocking one eyebrow at your impertinence. No doubt he already has your punishment in mind when the two of you are home.
But you're not going to budge that easily. Sensing your stubbornness, Gavin lets you go and unleashes his ultimate move with a sigh.
"I can see the Knots on you, Freelancer, and if I can see them, Caelum can too. I'm not covering your ass when he comes over for breakfast tomorrow and starts crying."
You gasp and immediately recoil. "Low blow Gavin!" You counter, but you know that he speaks the truth. Your heart will literally break if you're the reason that Caelum cries.
Gavin smirks when you switch off your laptop. He helps put your things away and offers a hand to you. With a small smile, you let yourself be gently pulled up by him and sling your backpack over a shoulder.
"Are you hungry?" Gavin asked as the two of you stepped into the large hallway, hand-in-hand. "I didn't manage to make anything when I put the groceries away, but I can whip something up real quick when we get home."
It's a sweet gesture, and you made sure that he knows how much you appreciate it by squeezing his hand. Ever since you two started living together, Gavin is determined to feed you properly. According to him, it's only fitting since you've constantly been feeding him too. "I'm more sleepy than hungry." You reply after a yawn. "I'll just eat a big breakfast tomorrow."
"I'll hold you to it. Also, look alive, Deviant. Hottie approaching at 12 O'clock."
That got your attention immediately, and snapped your eyes forward. Your jaw would've dropped if it weren't for Gavin lightly nudging your side when you saw who was walking towards the two of you.
It's them — the Electro Energetic that became the talk around campus.
They're as breathtaking as ever, even after a whole day of classes and club activities. Not a single hair out of place and clothes unruffled. Their body language stood out to you; their gait is a little hesitant but friendly, while their eyes are kind.
It's easy to see why so many people harbour crushes on them, and you've always been a sucker for cute faces.
When they finally approach you, they pull out a pair of wireless white earbuds from their ears. That's when you hear intense music playing:
It's the Pumpkin Patch King
With the corpse with the ring
And she'd fuck my best friend if I die here today...
"Um, hi. Good evening. I'm sorry for bothering you guys so late like this. Are you heading home?" They inquire tentatively.
Gavin waits for you to take the lead. "Hey, man. Yeah, we kind of are, actually. Want us to walk you home?" You could feel how pleased Gavin is beside you. The offer just crosses your mind, and besides, it's not nice to walk alone this late at night.
That's what you're telling yourself despite the small part in your brain whispered that walking them home would be a great step of getting to know them better. It's just a harmless crush anyway.
Unfortunately, they decline the offer. "I'm waiting for someone, actually, but when I saw you, I wanted to talk for a bit."
Your heart skips a beat for a second time tonight. They specifically sought you out? You? When they've never done so towards anyone before?
"O-Oh," You embarrassingly squeak, clutching Gavin's hand tighter.
The Electro Energetic nod. They tilt their head like an indulged, curious cat and god, that simple gesture shouldn't look so hot. "I don't know if you notice me, but we share Covert Laws - "
If you notice them? If you notice them!? They have a stronger presence than the lecturers themselves! They radiate magic like thunderstorms - intimidating, powerful and commanding that you have no choice but to submit to it.
Sitting beside them was an experience and a half! There's no way an Empowered creature could ignore them despite their quiet demeanour!
" - and I was wondering if you would like to be partners for the final project this year? Um, I heard that you're really good in that class, and I promise to pull my weight with the research and - "
You don't know how to react. Is this really happening? One of the most popular students in the academy wanted to be your project partner? You thought this sort of situation only occurs in animes!
"They'd love to." Gavin smoothly answers when you're too shocked to say anything. "It's always nice to make new friends after all. Especially with a walking wet dream such as yourself." Here, he purposely pauses to appraise the Electro Energetic.
Just like his Freelancer, Gavin has heard all about this Empowered human and even basks in the delicious energy coming from the thoughts and emotions his partner has for them. As an Incubus and their boyfriend, it's hilarious that his Deviant thought he's not aware of their crush. It's cute.
Hmm... it'll be nice if he and the Freelancer could invite the Energetic and their Vampire lover into their bed one of these days. Regardless if they've been Marked; honestly, that just made the couple as appealing as the biblical Forbidden Fruit.
And besides, Gavin has a strong feeling that the Freelancer wouldn't oppose the idea. It'll be the perfect anniversary present for his Deviant.
"...Was that supposed to be a compliment?" They ask warily. Oops, looks like he's coming on a little too strongly. Time to take it down a notch.
"It's whatever you want it to be. Anyway, now that you guys are... partners, what say you get to know us better, hmm? My lover has been eager to be friends with you." Gavin explains. You whip your head at him incredulously. Is he seriously doing what you think he's doing!? "I'm Gavin, by the way. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
The Energetic look confused, and you can't blame them. You need to save them before Gavin proposes something as crazy as an orgy on your behalf!
You laugh awkwardly, bringing their attention to you. "Right! Partners! I'd love to be yours - I-I mean, uh, for school stuff! Yeah! Can we exchange numbers?"
"Smooth, Deviant." Gavin teases. Something caught his interest, not that you notice as you and the Energetic trade contact information. They compliment the cute picture you have as your Home Screen (it's a selfie shot of you and Gavin, Lasko, Damien and Huxley during the previous game night. It's a shame that Caelum couldn't appear), and in return, you ask where did they buy their sick phone cover.
While they still feel like the human embodiment of a fierce thunderstorm, it's nice to have a casual conversation with them. They're thoughtful, kind and fun that you soon find yourself calming down a little.
"Not to cut this riveting conversation short, but are you sure that you don't want us to walk you home? It's getting really late, and we're more than happy to have you crash at our place for the night." Gavin interjects with a seductive grin, eyes half-lidded.
"Umm..."
Whoa, what happened to being friendly, Gavin!? You shoot him a look; he's going to drive them away!
"We have an extra guest room at our apartment." You hurried to explain. "So it's totally cool if your place is far away or something."
Their hesitation melts to understanding. The last thing that you want is a misunderstanding between you two.
"You guys are sweet, but I'll be alright. Actually, I'm about to leave the campus too. I'm just going to hang out at the cafeteria until he arrives." They said. You have a pretty good idea who 'he' is judging by their soft smile.
Gavin, for some reason, amp up his game. With a smirk, he cajoles, "Since he hasn't shown up yet, how about you hang out with us for a bit? There's a bar not too far from here - "
You flinched, and Gavin automatically shuts up and pulls you close to his side when a Vampire appears behind the Electro Energetic. It was so sudden that his appearance was a blur at first.
"Vincent? You're done with class already?" They blink. An arm snaked around their waist as the Vampire pulled his Mate close to his chest. The Energetic had to crane their head up slightly to look at him.
He's as tall as Gavin. Dressed in a casual black coat that screams money with a dark grey shirt accompanied by a pair of black jeans and boots. His silver studs, rings and watch glimmer underneath the fluorescent lights. Everything about this man reminds you of a panther sizing up its prey.
You gulped. He's currently glaring daggers at you and your boyfriend. You're itching to stutter out a, "This isn't what it looks like!" for some reason.
Now, ever since you learned about the existence of magic and Empowered creatures, you did your best to be open-minded. Even that whole ordeal with Vega didn't stop you from reaching out to the various Daemons attending the academy.
However, you haven't managed to befriend a Vampire due to their night classes, and even the few times you stay back like today, most of them are running back and forth through the hallways to catch their next lesson.
So to be the target of a pissed off Vampire made you uncomfortable. You want to fidget, but Gavin's arm secured around you ease some of that tension.
"Mm-hmm. I'm on break right now, so I can drive you back home. You done with that talk with your guidance counsellor?" The Vampire inquired, eyes still glued at you and Gavin.
"All done. We lost track of time when we discussed next semester's timetable for the Energetic course and potential careers once we graduate." His lover explains, unaware of the displeasure rolling off like waves from their boyfriend. "I think I need some time to go over them again. It's a bit much to take in."
The Vampire hums in acknowledgement. "We can go through them together this weekend if you like, Lovely. Maybe we can ask Will for help since he's coming over on Saturday for dinner too."
Oh, you suppose that's why they reject the Earth Elemental players' invitation to the party.
But the Vampire wasn't done. He assesses you and Gavin with narrowed eyes as if you were stains on the bottom of his boots. What the hell? "By the way, are these guys bothering you?"
A chill sweeps through you, sending goosebumps crawling on your skin at the sudden shift of tone. He was warm and affectionate when speaking to his lover, but now? It's colder than ice.
Gavin, whose smirk turns into a shit-eating grin, is utterly unfazed at the Vampire's hostility. In fact, you would go as far as to say that he's relishing it. "We're just keeping your gorgeous Mate company while they're waiting for you. I was just about to propose that we move the conversation to a bar so we could all get to know one another a lot more... intimately."
Oh god, they're so fucked. You have no idea why your boyfriend is trying to start shit up, but you're too tired to deal with this drama. So again, you try to salvage the situation.
"Just as friends!" You quickly butt in. "We decide to be partners for an assignment in Covert Laws, so hanging out at a bar sounds like a good idea as friends." You're sprouting bullshits at this point, but you hope it's enough to save both of your asses. You also made sure to emphasise the word 'friends'.
The Vampire quickly looks at the Energetic for confirmation, and they readily nod. His aggressive body posture relaxes somewhat, but he's still wary of you and Gavin.
Maybe this is the best time to introduce yourself to him.
"Uh, it's a little silly that we didn't introduce ourselves right away, but I'm a Freelancer." You mutter out rather awkwardly. Should you offer a hand to him?
Gavin saves you from doing so. "And I’m their boyfriend, Gavin. An Incubus."
"...Vincent Solaire." The Vampire - Vincent - reluctantly replies.
Wait - his surname sounds familiar, though. You think you heard it in one of the classes about the supernatural factions in Dahlia... It's on the tip of your tongue...
"Oh, we've heard all about you, Your Highness." Gavin slyly quips. "You and your lover are quite the celebrities around here."
Holy shit. Solaire! The most powerful Vampire clan in the city! You remember now; the King has two progeny - A Vampire Princess & Prince. You didn't expect the Energetic boyfriend to be the Prince himself! What a twist!
"Celebrities?" The Energetic - Lovely, as Vincent calls them - pipes up in confusion. The way their eyebrows furrow is adorable, but you wisely keep that to yourself.
They really are a mesmerising couple. You detect the perfume that lingers around Lovely is sweet and misty. It's calming yet so light that it dances just out of your reach; like a coy lover. Slowly driving you mad with desire. Vincent's cologne reminds you of husk and cedar. Subtle, but once you catch a whiff of it, it'll stay within your mind for hours on end. Wondering if that particular scent will ever return - like the perfect one night stand.
It says a lot about the couple.
"We haven't done anything wrong." Vincent Solaire stated, voice as hard as steel. "I don't know why you're trying to rile us up, Incubus, but I don't appreciate you and your lover hitting on my Mate when I made it clear that I Mark them."
Ooooh, he's jealous! Wait - did you come across as flirty to him!? Did Gavin purposely flirt with Lovely to make Vincent jealous? You've completely lost the plot.
"Consider it as an act of public service," Gavin answers, easily brushing off the Vampire Prince's irritability. "Besides, how can I not when you both are half of the student body's recent fantasies."
Lovely 'eeped' when Vincent bare his fangs at your boyfriend. "Back off, Gavin. Lovely is mine. Not yours or the Freelancer's."
Whoa, whoa! A severe misunderstanding is boiling here! No one is stealing Lovely away from him!
Fortunately, Lovely has gotten tired of the conversation. With a put-out sigh, they pat the arm around their waist to capture Vincent's attention. It worked. "No one is stealing the other's partner, Vince. It's all good; chill. You know you're the only one for me, right?" Here, they peck his cheek. "When did you get so possessive?"
Vincent grumbled but didn't explain himself, so Lovely just shook their head.
"Anyway, we better get going before Vincent's next class starts. It was nice meeting you two. I'll text you soon so we can plan on how to tackle that project."
You give a shaky smile and a thumbs up. "Looking forward to it."
Immediately after you said that, Vincent bares his fangs to you next. Oh my god, this guy needs to fucking relax!
"We're going! We're going! C'mon, Vincent. You're driving me home. Now."
And with that, you watch as Lovely drags the Vampire Prince to the parking lot. It's a strange yet comical sight. You only sigh in relief when they're out of your view.
"I thought I saw my life flashing before my eyes!" You complain. Those were the single most stressful moments that you’ve encountered— second to Vega invading your home.
"I think that went well, Deviant." Gavin objected, very pleased with himself. "He's pissed now, but he and his Mate will be thanking us soon."
So you were right; Gavin purposely flirted with Lovely just to rile Vincent up, and for what? Possessive, sexy time later tonight? Oh, whatever. That's enough drama for one night; you seriously just need to pass out now.
And with that, the two of you head home without realising your interactions with the power couple of D.A.M.N didn't go by unnoticed by the several students who were hovering close.
-
"Are you hurting anywhere, Lovely?"
"I'm alright, Vincent. The hickeys and bruises are healing nicely; my body still feels a bit sore but not enough to cripple me, so stop hovering near the door."
Vincent guilty did as he’s told and takes a seat on the corner of the bed. He watches you apply some light makeup on your face and neck in front of the vanity table as you're getting ready to head out to the academy. Your outfit compliments your look and, most importantly, hides any patches of skin except for your hands.
Vincent really went all out last weekend after his night classes ended. It's obvious that Gavin unleashed something within your lover, and you will freely admit that an unrestrained Vincent makes for a very fun and wild night.
The moment Will came over and realised that Vincent re-Mark you an hour before he arrives, he graciously decided to take a rain check and promise to have dinner with the two of you some other time.
Once Vincent gets it out of his system, he teased before leaving you gobsmacked and Vincent a blushing mess.
"You know, your guidance counsellor wouldn't mind if you're absent from classes today, Lovely. Probably." Vincent tries; a part of him doesn't want his Lovely to attend their lessons while their body is still healing. Then again, that part also whispers that the Incubus and his lover would be around them without his supervision.
Nope. No. Bad Vincent. Lovely is more than capable of taking care of themselves. They don't need him acting like a jealous, clingy boyfriend.
However, something that the Incubus bothered him.
"You and your lover are quite the celebrities around here."
What did he mean by that? He and Lovely had been playing good students the entire time they've been on campus! Their assignments are always delivered on time, grades nothing but above average, and they keep to themselves to avoid any typical college dramas.
Is it because of his status? For some reason, Vincent feels like it's more complicated than that. What a headache.
"Maybe, but I did promise the Freelancer that I’ll catch up with them to discuss our project," You commented and spritz your favourite perfume on your wrists and neck. You love this scent, despite it being cheap and common. "Vincent, honey, you're making that face again."
"It's my face, Lovely."
"Yeah, well, you have your happy-snappy-neck face again, Vincent." You dryly point out before sitting beside the Vampire. "Did that Incubus really rub you the wrong way?" Your voice is gentle. You didn't get any bad vibes coming from Gavin and the Freelancer - just genuine, harmless, friendly flirting. In a way, you welcome it as their attempts helped you drive your anxiety away.
God, walking up to them was hard enough. You always feel a little intimidated whenever you're around charismatic people.
"I don't know... I thought they were making you nervous, and the words that kept coming out of that Daemon's mouth? He knew what he was doing; I just can't figure out what or why." Vincent admits, frustrated.
Seeing him look so frustrated saddens you, so you propose a suggestion. "How about this, I'll ask the Freelancer what that whole thing on Friday was all about, and if it's anything gross, I'll give you a call so you can deal with them. How's that?"
It assured Vincent. Seeing his tiny smile urge you to peppered his face with kisses until he laughs. With your boyfriend now properly appeased, you leave the apartment for D.A.M.N.
It's a bright Monday morning. You hope that this week will be a little kinder to you than the previous one. However, the moment you arrived on campus, everyone was glancing at you curiously. When you made eye contact with the stares, the students couldn't walk away fast enough.
Weird.
Your first class of the day is on the second floor, so you didn't waste any time heading for the stairs. Students mingle around as they go about their day; some grab breakfast at the convenient store, while others chat with their friends at the cafeteria and lounge room. A Water Elemental is performing simple tricks at the marble fountain to an adoring crowd.
Just as you rounded a corner, the crowd parted ways with a subtlety of a serial killer in slasher movies, which is to say, absolutely none whatsoever to reveal your new friend. The Freelancer is flanked by their boyfriend, Gavin, on the left and on their right, the famous player in the Earth Elemental team Huxley and one of the academy's guidance counsellors, Lasko.
You couldn't help but notice that everyone is giving them a wide berth. Not that it matters when Gavin's body is positioned to shield the Freelancer from bumping into any of the passing students. Huxley passes a bottle of orange juice to them while Lasko is staring at something behind the Freelancer. He mutters something under his breath.
A loud voice suddenly bounces off the walls. "What happened to my water tumbler, Freelancer!?"
You and every other student in the area watch as the Freelancer turns around and loudly replies, "Don't worry! I already got you a new tumbler, Damien! It looks exactly like your old one. Except it's pastel pink with kittens on it, and the shape looks like a really fat snowman with bunny ears for straws." To make a point, the Freelancer rummage inside of their backpack and proudly present the weirdest looking water tumbler you had ever seen in your life to their boys.
"AAAAAHHHHH!"
"You know you could at least see it before you judge it, Damien." The Freelancer grumbled and shoved the tumbler back. Huxley gently pats their shoulder in a comforting manner. Lasko laughs nervously while Gavin continues to protect his lover silently, all the while looking at ease.
Everyone knows of the Freelancer and their boyfriends. They're the most popular group in D.A.M.N for a reason. Friendly, yet no one can be a part of their group due to the tight bond they have with one another.
The Freelancer is quickly shaping up to be a remarkable magical individual in their own right, marching to the beat of their own drums rather than the world's. Unwaveringly kind and friendly, constantly making sure the people around them are comfortable and safe.
In terms of academic performance, Damien remains unchallenged among his peers. Everyone could tell that he would undoubtedly change their world for the better the moment he graduates, especially in governing. He's also known for his fiery temper, yet that fire becomes a hearth when it comes to the Freelancer. More than once, students have stumbled upon them huddled close in the library, softly discussing the future they wanted.
If Damien is known for his academic excellence, then Huxley is famous for his prowess in the field. His mastery over his element made the younger Earth Elementals look up to him as their role model while his teammates view him as their ace. Charming, cheerful yet a bit absentminded at times, and even then, you can't help but be fond of him. You can find the Freelancer cheering him from the bleachers during his matches, and once Huxley won the game, he would immediately launch himself at them. Sweats, dirt and grass all over him, but the Freelancer would laugh as he hoisted them up in his embrace.
Lasko is an odd addition to their group, but once he drops his stuttering, he shows just how capable he is as one of the academy's guidance counsellors. Acknowledged as one of the most powerful Air Elemental of his generation, Lasko is well on track to graduate D.A.M.N with honours, and while the future might be uncertain, students like to speculate that he will remain with the Freelancer and the others no matter what. Sometimes you can even catch a glimpse of them hanging out at one of the local cafes and see how bright and alive Lasko can be when around the Freelancer.
Gavin came with a mystery trailing his saunter. See, no one knew how exactly he and the Freelancer first met. Speculations range from a cute, accidental meet up in a random convenience store to the Incubus boldly inviting them into a threesome when the Freelancer stumbled upon him mid-feeding. Lovely wonders if there's a betting pool going around the academy. The seniors would recognise Gavin, for he was their peer before he suddenly dropped out and vanished for a while. But judging by his frequent presence around the Freelancer, some say that he's looking forward to retaking his previous course. But whatever the reason may be, no one can deny the chemistry he has with the Freelancer. How fiercely protective he is of them when the Freelancer isn't looking.
They're certainly an intriguing group, that's for sure.
And when Gavin notices you were watching them, he winks at you. No doubt as an Incubus, he could scent what you and Vincent had been up to the entire weekend.
That's what you get for a magical academy, after all.
-
PS: Everyone in D.A.M.N (including Lovely & Vincent) hilariously assumes that the Freelancer is in a poly relationship with Gavin, Damien, Lasko & Huxley when in reality, they're just with Gavin. BBBBuuuttt... Gavin could detect the romantic/lustful feelings the other bois harbour for the Freelancer but kept it to himself for now. He's just waiting for the Freelancer to feel the same way so he could give them all The Talk™ and then go buy a bigger bed!
Anyway, I seriously had a lot of fun writing for this oneshot! It's been a while since I had that writing fever again so I hope you guys enjoyed it!

Distance Makes the Heart Grow
Tumblr media
CHAPTER 1
Series Masterlist
Pairing: Mafia Boss!Neville Longbottom x Reader
Pronouns: She/Her
Word Count: 1.8k
Summary: (Y/n) lives a normal life. But that’s the issue, it’s normal, it’s plain, and it’s growing boring. Everyday she wishes for something, anything to spice up her life. But, when her old school friend (and crush) shows up at her bakery with a new look (and what looks like a new life), what will it bring for her? Will their puppy love grow? Will his big secret lead to the end of them or will it spark a new beginning?
Warnings: None for this chapter!
A/N: Nothing major happens in this chapter, this is sorta just like the beginning stages.
(Y/n) let out a load groan, hand searching aimlessly for the alarm clock on her side table. “Where is it?!” she continued to slap her hand around on her table, many objects falling to the floor before her hand finally landed on the right one, the rooster noises ceasing as her hand collided with the big snooze button. She rolled over, sighing as she stared at her speckled ceiling. “Perhaps I really should take the time to learn how to use the alarm on my phone.” it wasn’t that she was bad with technology persay. It’s just if it was produced after the year of 2008 you could forget it. Could you really blame her though? During all her years at Hogwarts, she had never made the switch her fellow classmates made with modern technology. Sure she had a smart phone but the only thing she could manage to do with it is call, text, and make notes in the notes app (something she had just recently learned as well).
Unwillingly, she crawled out of bed, stretching as she let out a large yawn, bones snapping and cracking like a New Year’s firework. She made her way to the bathroom, looking into the same mirror she always did, watching the light in the center flicker the same way as always. Life for (Y/n) was seemingly unchanging. Day after day, month after month, was spent exactly the same. She’d wake up, get ready for work, and then travel a few blocks down the street to open the bakery. Her bakery.
It wasn’t that (Y/n) didn’t enjoy what she did. She happened to enjoy her job very much. All her friends at Hogwart’s had encouraged her, giving her the push she need to travel the journey of opening her own business. It was something she had always wanted to do but her parents begged her not to. In their words they didn’t want ‘an over zealous and unrealistic’ daughter on ther hands. However, their rude words simply were fuel to the fire. During her 5th year, she began to busk tables at various shops in Hogsmeade. It was hard work, balancing long shifts at 3 different shops and still maintaining decent scores in each class. But, she knew if she couldn’t handle that then there was no way she’d be able to handle running a bakery. So day in and day out she’d work, and work, and work and by the end of her 7th year she had a decent amount of money saved up!
The first issue had been finding a place in a good area that would gain traction and attention while the second one was finding someone willing to sell to someone fresh out of school with no prior business experience. She’d spoken to many people in various different places, some good, and some bad before she finally had been blessed with the chance of meeting Mary and her wife Denise. It was a miracle really. (Y/n) was short on the money, exponentially so however, Mary had sold to her anyways. She said she saw a passion in the girl that she hadn’t seen for a very long time and that it was something she wanted to help foster considering she had had her time to live her dreams and explore passions of her own. So with that, a handshape was exchanged for a beat up envolope filled with the entirety of the girl’s life savings. She had invested every nickel and dime she had ever earned into the place and she prayed it wouldn’t blow up in her face.
Which brought her to where she was today: a proud owner of a highly successful business. And of course, with great business comes a nice chunk of money which caught her parents’ attention. They had began to call her everyday but when that they didn’t work, they showed up at her shop unannounced. At first, she had felt warm inside. Her usual cold and distant parents had come to visit her! However, when they started crunching out numbers and percentages, that short lived happiness was replaced by irritation in which she quickly kicked them out, placing a charm on the building that when they’d attempt to enter (if they really, truly, had the balls to come back), their bodies would be flung right back onto the sidewalk into the heaping piles of trash on the city side walks. Now, (Y/n) was by no means wealthy, but she made a nice amount of money to be engaging in something she enjoyed so heavily, which is why she was confused where they had gotten the idea she had money to share with the main two people who were the cause of her insecurities. Plus, every extra dollar she had she put right back into the shop. Paying her workers, building maintenance, ingredients. She wasn’t a fan of having too much money, her family had shown her what that could cause (and how easily you could lose it all).
Yet still sometimes she found herself wishing she could live the lavish lifestyle her parents once did. She mainly dreamed more so of the more engaging parts instead of the status and power that came with it. As she frosted various different cakes with thick buttercream, her mind would wonder to vivid imagery of beautiful hotel rooms, with breath taking views. Michelin five star meals, coated in delicious cream sauces. Endless adventure waiting to be discovered.
And yet here she was, sitting at a table as she stuffed her face with a raspberry marzipan cupcake. It was a Wednesday, first one of the month and as per usual, her and Twyla were set together, sampling cakes, chocolates, and other treats for the upcoming days. Wednesday had been the official day  they had chosen due to the slowed flow of people that would come in. (Y/n) liked to have a different theme each day of the week. The customers lived for it and she had massed a group of frequenters who came each day, wondering what the theme would be that day.
“You know boss, I’ve gotta say it. Working here and sampling all these cakes with you is giving me quite the ass!” Twyla said, turning around as she wiggled her ass in the girl’s face for emphasis. (Y/n) giggled, rolling her eyes as she swatted at the girl, missing as she jumped away from her last minute. “Hey! You gotta take me out to dinner first for that.”
“Just because we’re sampling cakes doesn’t mean that the store is closed! Anyone could walk in at any moment and would you really want that to be their first experience here?” she asked, eyes scanning the silver platter in front of them. She decided on the new dessert flavored chocolates she had been working on. Popping it into her mouth, she let out a moan of approval.
“I mean, I dont’ see why not! We’d definitely make a lot more money with a cake like mine!” the blue haired girl said, sitting down as she grabbed a chocolate as well. “Besides, I don’t think those little noises you’re making would help the scene.” she stated, snickering as the girl across from her tensed up.
“It-it’s not like that! The chocolate- it just- I just- ugh!” she stuttered out, huffing as she crossed her arms over her chest, pouting at the girl. “If you’re gonna keep being mean we can end this process. Just tell me what you think of the blueberry pie chocolate so I can know if we’re adding it to tomorrow’s spread.”
“Oh come on (Y/n) it’s good! Every first Wednesday we sit here, you overly critique yourself, then me and Tiana end up picking out our favorites for the next day!” Twyla was right, even their patterns for trying new things remained the same. (Y/n) wiped her messy hand on her aprons, sighing as she stood up to go back to her position behind the counter. Her employee followed, grabbing the platter to put back into the kitchen before joining her boss behind the counter.
“You’re right. I swear everyday is beginning to feel the same.” She opened her notepad, beginning to take inventory of the sweets they had in the display counter. “I’m grateful for everything I have, I really am. But sometimes I just wish I could have something, anything….”
“New?” the green eyed girl added, catching the (h/c) haired girl’s attention. She nodded, looking at the girl who had snuck a cookie out of the glass case. “I feel ya, girl. Everyday feels the same. Sometimes even when new people come in, I can already tell how they’re going to be. How they’ll act, what they’ll order, what method of payment they’ll use.” (Y/n) eyed the girl up, raising a brow.
“Are you sure you’re not just using legilimens?” she questioned, watching as the girl shifted on her feet, scratching the back of her neck.
Okay so maybe I do sometimes. But a lot of the times I don’t! Like the other day this weird guy came in and- woah. (Y/n) I don’t wanna freak you out but I have a feeling those hotties in suits across the street are going to be walking in here soon.” Twyla said, in an uncharacteristically quiet tone. The shorter girl followed her friend’s gaze, looking out the glass doors across the street. Three unfamiliar men were crossing over, all in suits that she could only assume cost as much as four months of rent. However, the one in the middle really caught her eye.
Before she knew it, the bell chimed and the three of them made their way in. They looked very out of place in the brightly decorated shop. The one in the middle looked the most important, towering over the other two men. He had dark slicked back hair, an eyebrow piercing, and tattoos that were visible on his neck and hands (which had a few beautiful looking rings on them (none of which were a wedding band…)), yet his hazel eyes held a soft look to them. To his left was a redhead boy, freckles danced all along his face. His eyes were bloodshot from god knows what. He had tattoos as well (not as many as the middle man) and a few unique ear piercings. The guy to the hot tall guy’s right was attractive too but not nearly as serious looking as the other two. In fact, he was humming a song under his breath, a smile causing the tattoo on the right side of his face to crease.
As she went to open her mouth to greet them, the man in the middle eye’s grew wide, his mouth gaping as he stared at her. He walked closer, examining her face closely which caused her to grow confused.
“I’m...I’m sorry. Do I know you?” she asked.
“(Y/n)?” she gasped at the sound of the familiar voice, her notepad and pen dropping from her hands. She made her way around the counter, staring up at the tall man.
“Neville?!”

Terraqua Week Day 2 (Rivalry)
Summary: Growing up with your best friend is the greatest joy, the greatest nuisance, the greatest heartache. (The one where they kiss after their fight in Radiant Garden). || Word Count: 6,705
Read on AO3
A/N: My submission for the second day of @terraquaweek !! Title is from a quote from Eraqus from BBS. It’s pretty much the only line in the game that sums up Terra and Aqua, and it’s partly the reason why they’re so amazing. This whole rivals to lovers thing is so much like enemies to lovers and I WANT TO EAT IT ALL. I’m especially proud of this one - I had so much writing it!!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
for when equal powers clash, their nature is revealed
CHILDHOOD
 It was a strange dream but she doesn’t remember it when she wakes up, just that it left her with a coppery taste in her mouth and a fog blanketing her thoughts. Something is coming, and she can’t prepare for it.
Aqua decides to tell her best friend about it.
Terra is waiting for her in the woods. They like to hike to the lake, to listen to the birds in the summer. They like to spar away from the training grounds of the castle sometimes, away from the Master’s eyes so they could practice without any scrutiny. She’s grateful to have Terra—he’s just as crazy as her when it comes to their studies. Books past midnight? Sign me up. Spar for five hours? Your ass is grass. Forgo an entire night of sleep to talk about outside worlds, about their worries, their pride, finally being a Master? We won’t be efficient for training tomorrow, but here’s what I’m thinking.
She finds him at the mouth of the forest, a trail down from the waterfall. Terra is lobbing balls of fire, an excited grin on his face, itching to get moving. Too much energy for a fourteen-year-old in the morning.
“What does that mean?” Terra asks her when she describes the dream.
Well, she can’t really describe it. Nothing happened. Darkness. Questions spoken in her head, worries that there was a darker darkness moving around in the shadows stalking her. A nagging suspicion that inside its mouth was something she should have pulled out.
“Nothing’s going to get you here. You’re safe,” Terra says, though she doesn’t need reassurance. “Should we go back?”
“No, please.” Aqua keeps her nose high. “The lake is a good place to rest.”
But they wouldn’t rest. They both love the thrill: training their magic, the thought of an upcoming exam two weeks from now, essays. They can’t help themselves.
Terra punches the air, an energy blast shooting out from his arm. Another fire spell, his favorite. When he gets too involved though, too much, he becomes obsessive—obsessed with winning, obsessed with tripping her up, obsessed with outlasting her. The fury in how he builds his attacks is what makes Terra a dangerous opponent.
He’s perfect.
Aqua dodges and summons an ice spell to repel him, sweeping her kick so it spreads out. That’s the best strategy—tire him out, make him run after her, evade and exhaust, evade and exhaust, strike him when he’s almost done.
Pull. She hears. Pull from it.
One of his attacks breaks her barrier, and she grins, twirling while she heals herself. Every moment she stumbles is another opportunity to learn how to beat him. They’ll talk about their duel after they finish. They’ll gloss over technique and how to improve. Every time they spar, their bond is reforged, connected, strengthened, unbreakable.
Terra throws another blow.
Pull.
This one catches her off guard.
Aqua gasps and shields herself with her arm without a spell to protect her. Terra chokes on her name, too late to warn her.
A light explodes in her face, a flash of flower petals, a spell so instinctual she can’t articulate where it comes from. Her hand wraps around metal, as though an invisible hand has shoved it to her, strong but as light as her feet, a thrum deep underneath, a heartbeat. Its arrival blocks the attack with a barrier.
“A-Aqua?”
She holds her Keyblade in her hand.
“Huh.” Terra grimaces, stepping back.
The Keyblade is curved, striking at the tips, like a slice of movement. Blue and silver, a cool brush of a touch as chilling as snow on her fingertips but warm all the same, the feeling of a beloved embracing her. Aqua jumps in excitement, squealing. She had drawn images in her journal for what it would look like. This is better, much more beautiful.
“I don’t have a name for it, yet,” she says, laughing.
Terra doesn’t laugh with her. “Congrats,” he says, his enthusiasm on a chokehold, his hand rubbing his hip because it can’t find his pocket.
Oh. He’s two years older than her, the first child to come to the Land of Departure, and he can’t conjure his Keyblade yet.
“Terra?”
“I’m fine.” He’s not.
“Wait.” She follows him into the thicket. He’s speedwalking, trying to get away from her. “Don’t be sad. Yours will come soon.” He doesn’t slow down. “Maybe I can help.”
Terra scoffs, scorched. At least he stops. “Or maybe not.”
Aqua fiddles with the tip of her wonderful Keyblade, rolling it onto her palm. “I was thinking how happy I was sparring with you. We’re best friends and I was thinking that…” Heat pools into her cheeks. “I was thinking we’d be best friends forever. Then she came to me. I don’t know how to explain it.”
A muscle twitches in his jaw. “That’s nice.”
“I summoned mine in the middle of danger,” she offers. “Maybe you need the same.”
He arches a brow. But he softens, blinking back tears. “You think that would work?”
“Why wouldn’t it?”
“I don’t know.”
“We could tie you down. I can cover you in ice.”
Terra’s face contorts, as if stopping a snort. “That’s the best you can offer?”
“Should I hang you by your toes and put leeches in your shirt?”
Terra cracks a smirk and she sighs, relieved.
Once he’s able to summon his own Keyblade, they could go home and declare the semester over. The Master will be so impressed.
Aqua calls for an ice spell to stay near. With the Keyblade, it’s much more natural, as if the chasm she normally has to pray through is now a step away. “I won’t hold back,” she warns.
Terra brings his fists together, heat simmering off his skin as a fire spell starts to build. “Good.”
He is the first to strike. Aqua dodges as the flames lick under her shoes, swinging her Keyblade forward. Ice sparks out from its tip and shoots forward in a straight line. It’s so much easier to aim now. Terra sways his hands into a cupping motion, as if picking up dirt into a bowl. Flames burst out of the ground, creating a wall that melts the ice before it hits him.
But Terra has a huge disadvantage: because she’s faster at summoning spells with the Keyblade, she can race around him, dodging everything he comes up with. He’s stuck in one spot, forced to place all his focus on bringing his magic to him in order to pull from it, the worst kind of exposure in a battlefield imaginable.
He wants this, doesn’t he? To be pushed into summoning it?
“Don’t hold back,” he says when she hesitates. He throws a burst of thunder at her.
“Terra, I don’t like this.”
“You promised,” Terra says, closing a fist. He takes several moments to meditate on a spell, and Aqua stops. He’s trying to summon ice, a weaker command for him. But Terra is smart and Terra is capable. He pushes what he’s conjured with a force strong enough to crush her into a tree.
She clicks her tongue when he follows that immediately with a fire spell. It nearly singes her hair, and she retaliates in kind—ten fold. Her fire hits him directly on the shoulder, sputtering onto the bush behind him, spreading like wings on the greenery, blackening the tree nearby and jumping to others.
“Aqua!” Terra grips his shoulder and gapes at the collateral, which is moving too fast to seem real.
“Terra, we have to—”
“Come on!”
Ignoring his injury, he scrambles towards the lake, Aqua following close behind. The forest fire beats heavy behind them, a nasty gray suffocating the sky. The heat molts onto them, the smoke thick and invasive, visibility covered by a layer of graininess. Terra throws himself into the lake and draws a circle on the surface with his good hand. The smoke is now black.
“You need to heal first,” Aqua says, coming up behind him and placing her hand on his shoulder, whispering a spell. Green petals kiss his charred shirt, and he can move his arm better, gathering the water into an invisible bowl to carry back.
Aqua does the same. She tries sealing the fire with her Keyblade so it stops spreading so far. So much work that seems like it’s doing nothing. So much earth that Terra is throwing onto the fire when the water sizzles away. Aqua almost collapses from the adrenaline keeping her standing, from the sweat and soot filling her eyes, from coughing but no matter how much, she can’t clear her throat.
The Master finally arrives and points his Keyblade into the sky. A storm cloud gathers, a wave of water to hush everything. Aqua doesn’t know what comes next, only that Terra is picking her up in his arms.
It isn’t until after she wakes up in the infirmary that she realizes what a shithole they’ve dug themselves into.
It’s raining, trickling down the small window that sits above the bed, behind the pillow. Wooden shelves line the walls, filled with potions that she can pronounce and ones that she can’t. Some are so expired the Master has never opened them. Flasks, beakers, needles, syringes, scalpels, gloves spread across the table. Medical books about the nervous system and the heart are plenty here. There should be two about herbal remedies, but they’re gone.
She hears the Master and Terra bickering on the other side of the door.
“Am I to believe,” the Master says, icy and sharp, “the day she summons her Keyblade for the first time and a sudden, devastating forest fire is to be simply spooned together as a coincidence?”
Terra is quiet at first. “No, Master.”
“Of course not,” he bites.
“I was angry, sir.” This shocks Aqua. “I couldn’t control my magic for a moment.”
That’s not true. He needs to say it was her fault. She didn’t know her own strength and she tried too hard—
The Master scoffs. “I am so disappointed,” he says, his voice shaking in a way she’s never heard before. “I do not have the words. I can’t bear to look at you.”
Her heart sinks. She can’t imagine. She can’t imagine how awful Terra must feel.
The door opens, and Terra slips inside with a gathering of fresh herbs in his hand. His face is ashen and pale. “How are you feeling?” he asks, his voice brittle. He’s about to sob.
Aqua moves and flinches. Her arm. “Ugh.”
“Don’t move.” He rips the leaves off and stuffs them into a mortar. “Your arm is badly burnt. The Master already healed you, but you need longer term care.” Somehow, he doesn’t cry.
Aqua pulls the sheet over her down. Red splotches trail from the shoulder down to the elbow. The Master took care of the severe scarring, but it hurts like she’s still in a pyre. “The fire?”
Terra sniffs and mixes the herbs with the pestle. “The Master took care of it. He hasn’t given me my punishment yet.” Briskly, he approaches her, spreading the concoction over her skin. “This should work better than a potion.”
“Our herb master,” she says, hoping it would make him smile. It doesn’t. Terra has dedicated himself to potion making and teas, considering that healing spells are hardest for him. When he finishes balming her in the mix, he reaches for bandages, holding her by the wrist so he can wrap the entire arm. “You shouldn’t move this for a while.”
“Terra?”
He doesn’t look at her, pinning the bandages in place.
“Thank you,” she says.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for you to get hurt.”
Terra climbs into the bed with her. It’s a narrow cot, the mattress thin and overused, the sheets washed too many times that its threads fray. Terra holds her good hand, bringing it up between their faces. Tears roll down his cheeks and pool on the pillow. “You’re going to be okay,” he says, “right?”
“Yeah.” She smiles. The mix soothes the superficial burns but it takes its time relieving the stabbing pain that comes with such an intense injury. “Why didn’t you tell him the truth?”
Terra frowns, staring at the folds of the pillow under his face. “I didn’t want him yelling at you.”
“I’ll tell him tomorrow—”
“Nah.” He wills a smirk and it looks fake. “We should… celebrate your accomplishment, you know?”
For some reason, it makes her guilty. “Are you really that mad at me?”
“What? No.” He bites his lip. “No, I just… I’m stupid.”
Aqua stares at him. “You’re not.”
He scoffs. “If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t fail at the most basic part of being a wielder.”
“Your Keyblade?”
He shakes his head. It’s not fair.
“Why didn’t it come?”
“I don’t know.” He sighs.
Aqua gives his hand a light squeeze. “Maybe I was wrong.”
“Pssh. Maybe?” He grins.
She would hit him on the shoulder, but she hurts too much. “Maybe my approach isn’t your approach.”
“Meaning what?”
“Maybe your Light needs something different.”
His smile falls, like that of a lost and abandoned child. “But I don’t know what it wants from me.”
“Hmmm.” Aqua thinks hard, staring at the way his eyebrows furrow as he thinks with her. “You like to protect.”
“Okay?”
“Maybe your Keyblade isn’t about connecting with others or making friends like mine is. Maybe you’re happiest protecting and taking care of them.”
Terra purses his lips, blushing. “I guess.”
“Look.” She lifts her bandaged elbow, wincing. “You took care of me.”
“I took care of a sap.”
“Who was the one crying over me?”
“My secret evil twin. He wants to make me look bad.”
“What kind of a joke is that?” She sticks her tongue out. “Sometimes, I hate your face.”
Terra laughs for real this time.

BEFORE THE EXAM
 The books she needs are not where they’re supposed to be on the shelf.
“Terra!” she calls.
“Shhh,” she hears from the other side. Terra is sitting on one of the numerous tables in the library, a long, five-story ballroom with windows for walls, the ceiling a skylight. It allows for the sun to beam on them from all directions, on ornate gold-plated shelves with ladders on wheels for the books out of reach. Of all the desks he could have chosen, figures he’d be right here where she’s frantically searching, just to spite her. “We’re in a library,” he says, voice low.
Aqua refuses to whisper. “We’re the only ones here.”
“How rude.”
“To who?”
Terra gestures to the open book splayed under his hand. “I’m reading.”
He has seven other books stacked next to his parchment and pen. Preliminaries start tomorrow—the preliminaries that would determine their eligibility for the Mark of Mastery next year—and essays are due.
On top of the stack is Darkness and the War for Light, right above The Stars As Your Guides and the ever-necessary Affairs of the Heart.
“I need those,” she says.
“You know the rules—”
“They’re arbitrary.”
“—first dibs, first reads.”
“You can’t read them all at once.”
“Watch me, I’m impressive.” Terra bites his lip to restrain a snort, those deep eyes waiting for her reaction, his strong cheekbones suspended in a smirk. She wants to punch him in the face.
Aqua exhales. Without saying a word, she snatches the book at the top of the stack before he could stop her, bolting for the other side of the table. Terra scrambles out of his chair, tackling her from her behind so he could yank it out of her arms. She’s laughing under the weight of his chest, heat rising to her cheeks.
“You’ll have to fight me for it,” she warns.
Terra snorts, his breath brushing her shoulder. “Really?” He grips the book and pulls. He’s stronger than her and they both know it.
The trick to defeating an opponent so much larger than you is to hit them at their most exposed. Aqua elbows him in the gut, and leaves Terra clutching his side so she could take a seat at the table, where her own unfinished essay awaits.
“I guess that’s fair,” he groans.
“You sought a challenge, so accept your defeat.”
Aqua flips pages of Darkness—this year, it was especially important that they recognize signs of Darkness lurking near. Rage, scheming, impure intentions, greed, selfishness, fear. They’re present in subtle ways. Sometimes people act without realizing. Sometimes people are fully aware. Both are dangerous.
She grunts when she’s shoved over.
Terra brings his parchment with him when he fills her seat, his hips so wide that she’s left with the corner.
“It could be more comfortable,” he complains. His body is warm.
“What are you doing?”
“Writing my essay, but you took my book.”
The one he wasn’t using. Aqua inhales. “Terra—”
“I had first dibs. You broke the honor code, so you left me with no choice.” He smirks. His face is nose to nose with hers, and she imagines closing the gap. “We can share.”
“Fine,” she musters, averting her gaze. It’s awkward staring at him when his eyes look like they’re about to swallow hers.
They work. The book sits between their respective essays, the scratch of pen on paper the only noise filling the room, especially when he strikes long lines across words he no longer wants. He leans over her shoulder to read, his breath heavy on her cheek. If they were in different places, if he had her in an embrace, she could probably feel for his heartbeat.
Though this isn’t something she should be thinking about right now, not when she’s trying to read the three tenants in combating the Darkness. Vow Number One: Do not give yourself to Temptation.
“You’re very distracting,” he says, his voice so close to her ear that it sounds like yelling.
She jumps. He took the words right out of her mouth. “Speak for yourself. You’re too big for this chair.”
“There’s one right next to you.” She could hear how much he loves this.
“I sat here first.”
He leans back and wraps his arm around the backrest. “I have to defend my space.”
“Then you can squirm.”
He huffs, and it suspiciously sounds like he’s pleased with that. Aqua reads a sentence, scans the current page, and flips to the next one.
Terra swats her hand and turns it back. “I wasn’t finished with that one.”
Aqua would scream if she already didn’t enjoy this. She’ll never admit that out loud. “So you’re just,” she starts slowly, “going to police how fast I read this book?”
“Depends on where I am.”
“You’re slowing me down.”
“You’re not being considerate.”
“I can do the same thing.” She flips the page back to her spot.
“Aqua,” he warns.
“Oh, you didn’t like that?” Aqua smirks at him.
He eyes her and smiles. “You make me want to scream.”
Like a mind reader. “Don’t forget—we’re in a library.”
“Okay.” He pulls the book closer to him.
“Okay.” She pulls it back.
Terra strengthens his grip on the book, leaning forward and wrapping his other arm around her waist. To use her as a counter-weight, to push off of her so he can claim the prize, Aqua knows this, but her heart jumps at the touch. He drives her crazy in the most delicious way. He’s addictive.
“Nice to see my students finding some time for leisure,” the Master’s voice says, approaching them from the entrance. “A healthy activity during such a time of stress, if I do say so myself. I commend the both of you.”
Aqua doesn’t know about healthy when she’s thinking about all manners of touching. Terra slips away from her. Is the Master being facetious? Should they move to different chairs? Or would that make them look more guilty?
“Terra is deliberately sabotaging my essay,” Aqua says, voice shaky, her sleeve coming up to cover her blush. Terra has his elbows on the table, both of his fists hiding the lower half of his face.
Eraqus tucks a binder under his arm, glancing over their work. Aqua isn’t sure if she’s seeing things, but she swears that’s a smirk underneath his moustache.
“Well,” he says. “These will be the last essays you will write, if everything runs smoothly tomorrow. Quite a reward for all these years of hard work, yes?”
Terra and Aqua nod.
Eraqus nods along with them, as awkward as the collapse of clothes leaving you naked. “Don’t work too hard,” he advises, and Aqua wants to melt under the table. “Tomorrow will come regardless. Enjoy the time when it is good.”
The Master leaves the library with a different atmosphere.
“Last essay ever,” Terra repeats, mumbling to himself. He’s frowning. They don’t make a move to a different chair, as if doing so would have admitted some secret neither of them even know but nevertheless, they don’t want anyone else to find out. “Then there’s next year.”
Next year.
Some of Terra’s pages have whole paragraphs crossed out. Maybe that’s why he’s better than her at essay-writing. He goes beyond. He’ll scrub out parts he’s already written when he realizes they no longer serve him, drenched in ink blots when he notices small errors. Even with a complete essay, Terra will rewrite it from scratch, to prepare clean pages with no mistakes. Aqua doesn’t consider herself lazy with essays. She just never had a difficult time writing something the Master will want to read.
But all the effort Terra puts into his work means that he considers angles she’s never thought of before. On the subject of Darkness and Temptation, Terra writes: The Master of Masters writes of Temptation: “To tempt a snake for its loyalty reaps safety in the future,” (Affairs of the Heart, pg. 236). Giving in to Temptation when a Light is about to expire harbors selfishness, and that beacons the Darkness to cloud our minds. If we are doubtful, we too welcome the Darkness. However, if we deny the very thing our Hearts want, when we should be following Them as our closest allies, then we are unable to persevere. I question whether Temptation can only have negative connotations. Our duty is to make sure the Light is in balance, and perseverance is key. How are we supposed to keep the Light bright if ours are too dim? Should we not enjoy our own lives as we see fit, follow our Hearts to bring us fulfillment? Should we not make love, or enjoy the dessert we bake? These trivialities are the very thing people hold dear and protect. It is not our calling to enjoy them, but if we are, then our Hearts are at peace. If happiness is shared, then it is Light worth protecting, even our own. It feeds our strength.
Aqua can’t write like that.
Tomorrow, they’ll spar under the Master’s scrutiny. If they pass, they’ll do it again next year and finish their studies once and for all. Ever since Terra conjured his Keyblade, he’s treated his fights like he’s a bulldozer. Tricky to outmaneuver, keeping her on her toes.
He’s still the best sparring partner she could ask for, the best teacher when it comes to outlasting opponents. Her only equal.
“I’m nowhere near finished,” Aqua says.
“Looks like we’re both pulling all-nighters tonight.”
Aqua sighs, and this prompts Terra to hold her hand under the table, interlacing their fingers together. She wants to curl into him, feel what it’s like to really hold him close.
“We’re going to do fine.” Terra says, his voice soft, but he’s so close he fills her mind and every sensation in her body. He rubs her thumb with his.
“All-nighters aren’t pleasant,” she says, thinking ahead to a yard of headaches and yawns. “We’ll need energy.” This is the first opportunity to stand up. “I can make coffee and tea for us.”
“And lots of food.” Terra stands with her. “Protein. Nuts are good for energy boosts. I can make us enough meals to sustain us for the rest of the night.”
They’re speaking with the intention to leave something behind that they don’t want to address, packaging their words away from the obvious. Aqua fiddles with her fingers.
Terra moves his essay over. “Maybe we should work on opposite ends of the table,” he says, clearing his throat. His voice is shy.
“So we can focus.”
“Yeah.” He sounds desperate to agree but also…disappointed? “You can take the book. For now. Consider it my peace offering.”
“It wasn’t an honorable battle to begin with.” She moves hers over too, measuring in her mind how big of a feast they’d fill the table with. They’ll need more, enough for Ven to pig out every once in a while.
“Says the cheater.”
“You were the one stealing my book!”
“You broke the rules.”
“It wasn’t a fair setup.”
“Aqua, I’m shocked.” Terra feigns displeasure, holding his hand over his heart. “I thought I knew you better.”
She groans. She hates his beautiful, impeccable face sometimes.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
THEN...
 The conversation is a combustion she can’t prevent from happening. It isn’t supposed to be this way.
“And what is this dangerous task, Terra?” she asks, refusing to believe he’d test the teachings they both held so dear. After all these years. That he’d squander his chances at convincing Eraqus to give him the Mark of Mastery. “It doesn’t sound like what the Master told you to do.”
“It might be a different route, but I’m fighting the Darkness.”
“I’m not so sure. I’ve been to the same worlds as you and I’ve seen what you’ve done. You shouldn’t put yourself so close to the Darkness.”
Ven interjects. “Listen to yourself, Aqua. Terra would never—”
“You mean you’ve been spying on me?” Terra says, his eyes narrowing. To see his beautiful face this hurt—stars, she doesn’t know what she’s doing. She should shut up. “Is that what he said to do? The Master’s orders?”
What is she to do? What else does he expect? “He was only…”
Quietly, he says, “I get it,” like the silence in a coffin.
“Terra—”
“Just stay put! I’m on my own now, all right?”
“Terra, please! Listen! The Master has no reason to distrust you, really! He was just worried.”
Her words fall on deaf ears. Terra is not like this, he’s never like this, turning his back, walking away, leaving her to stand and watch him go.
“Why?” Ven asks her. “Why would you do this? You’re letting this whole Master thing get to your head.”
Terra has never said that about her, even when pushed. They’ve been pushed and pushed, how is she supposed to mend the tear now?
“I’ll be right back.”
“He’s really pissed.”
“Stay here.”
“I won’t.”
Aqua stops. A lot is changing and she can’t keep up. “But Ven—”
Ven purses his lips. “I’ll give you guys some time alone. Then I’m going after him.”
Oh, so that’s how it’s going to be. She is the odd one out, the one that shouldn’t follow Terra, the one that broke some sort of code by choosing to side with the Master. They should be on the same side.
“Be safe, please?”
Ven nods, but he isn’t happy about it.
Aqua crosses the alleyway, opening an ornate gate that leads into the town square. Radiant Garden is pretty; they arrived just in time for spring, where the dandelions are yellow and the town is painted in herbal colors. But Aqua can’t get herself to enjoy the view. She can’t appreciate the architecture, the castle, the clock tower, the townsfolk selling their wares, the gentle sunset, not when her heart is collapsing into a growing, weighted pit. Nothing else and no one else exists in the seconds she dashes down the streets.
“Terra!”
He’s heading towards the city gates, where she assumes he’ll summon his glider and fly away.
Aqua speeds up as fast as she can, feeling she’s still too slow. He’s about to disappear if she can’t break her bones and fly. She grabs him by the shoulder. “Terra, please. I don’t want the conversation to end the way it did.”
“Aqua,” he grunts, stepping out of her touch and crossing his arms. “Not now, okay?”
He’s about to turn on her. Don’t let this be the last image she sees.
She hugs him by his waist and buries her face into his shoulder. “Please don’t leave.”
He tenses.
“Please?”
She doesn’t know what to say. Apologize? For doing what’s expected of her? Shouldn’t he know this?
Shouldn’t she understand on some level, after all these years, that sometimes Terra is way more important than her duties? That she should stand up for him when it’s called for?
When Terra finally wraps his arms around her, she squeezes him tighter, hoping the loss of words would translate. How many minutes does she have left before she has to let go?
Terra splayes his hand on her back, as if to prompt her to loosen up. “I need to go.”
“There’s so much we need to talk about.” Why is her heart pounding this hard?
“I don’t want to talk about anything.”
“I feel so awful for what I’ve said.”
Terra doesn’t reply.
Aqua doesn’t know what’s gotten into her, why she can’t trust in anything, let alone the faith that their bond is unbreakable when she is witnessing how it’s cracking under the pressure. She grabs his face and kisses him, the taste of his mouth unique, warm, sweet, more than she hoped for.
Terra seizes her when he kisses back. He wants another. And another. He grunts.
They part for breath, too exposed and in public. Terra takes her aside, into a shadowed alley between a house and the city wall, pushing her against the brick to kiss her harder. She locks his neck in her arms and pulls him in. He’s so enveloped in her lips and he’s so angry, his teeth sliding and nipping barely on her skin like he’s fighting to win, his pelvis on hers, his chest pressing her, squeezing her breath away. She doesn’t want him to let her go.
He pulls away, his touch slacked. Heavy in breath, lips swollen, eyes watery, he trembles as if he’s done something awful. Aqua has her hand on his chest right over his heart, where it thrums quick and strong. He’s strong, he’s always been. She has to believe that.
“I don’t compare to you,” he croaks.
Fear churns in Aqua’s stomach, and she reaches for his wrist. “You do. You—” She doesn’t know what to say. “You shouldn’t think that way.”
Terra pulls from her, snapping their connection, leaving it cold where he was warm. It hurts. “I have to do this alone.”
“Terra—”
“Master Aqua,” he says, and her heart drops. “Please, respect my wishes. This is something I need to do if I’m ever going to—” He doesn’t finish. Instead, he turns over his shoulder, the crown of his dark hair glistening in the light of the sun where he disappears past the city gates. He doesn’t come back.
Aqua wraps her arms around herself, caressing the warmth he left behind for as long as possible before it inevitably leaves her too. She wonders if there is meaning in what just happened, wonders what he’s telling himself that would set him down this path. She’s scared of what will happen if she follows him.
She has to follow him. She has to make sure he’s alright. She prays he makes the right decisions, that they won’t have to fight.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
NOW
At night, the library is surrounded by stars. Twelve years in the Realm of Darkness and Aqua has forgotten that the library is all windows, bookshelves suspended in a birdcage on the side of the castle. It’s drizzling, droplets appearing at random, with none of the weight to drip down the glass. The lights are off, a glow polluting in from the hallway.
Terra is here, lying on a gold and white couch, the stand ornate and the cushions embroidered.
“Welcome to the insomnia party,” he says.
Aqua sits by his ankles. Terra rests his head on his arms, and lets go of the stars above the storm clouds to watch her. He leans up on one elbow and offers her a smile, but it’s a mimic of one. Who knows the reason why he can’t sleep. She won’t ask.
“Can we,” she starts, bringing her knees to her chin. “Talk?”
“We are.”
On the spot, Aqua blanks. “I don’t know where to start.”
He scoffs and unhooks his elbow, plopping back on the cushion. “Pick a place. We’ll get lost together and have to backtrack anyway.” He sighs, rolling his head towards the floor. “I can’t look at any of these books the same way again.”
Five stories of them, and not a single explanation for what happened.
“When it got tough and I needed to rely on my knowledge,” Aqua says, counting words on her essays over the years: 20,000. “I found that none of it could help us.”
“I’ve had questions ever since I started my apprenticeship,” Terra says, staring at the glass ceiling. “Many of them are still unanswered. What was the point?”
“None of it was relevant in the Realm of Darkness.”
Terra rolls over into a fetal position, burrowing his face into his arms. “So what did help?”
“Thinking of you and Ven.” The thought right now makes her smile, a little thing, a blink in the darkness.
“I thought of you every day,” he says, morosely, shyly, with a speck of hope and a mix of self-awareness. After twelve years, Aqua still knows him so well and she’s grateful he’s (almost) the same Terra she came home to.
The thought of that chokes her. “I didn’t want it to be this way,” she says. “Any of it.”
“None of us did.”
“I meant…” She pauses, watching closely. The outline of his shoulders, the shape of his brow. They’re furrowed. “Our dream was to become Masters together.”
His shoulders tick. “I should have congratulated you.”
“What?”
“When you were titled Master. I didn’t congratulate you. I’m sorry for being self-centered.”
After twelve years, that’s the last thing in her mind. “I was thinking of withdrawing the title.”
Terra shoots up, face to face with her. “Why?”
“Like I said,” Aqua whispers, now that he’s so close. “Our dream was to be Masters together.”
“No way.”
“You’re quite passionate about this.” Aqua rubs her knee. A nervous habit, something for her body to do. It used to be natural to hold his hand.
Terra slaps his forehead. “I can’t let you do that. Not after all the work you’ve done.”
“You’ve worked hard, too.”
“And everything you’ve survived.”
“What you did was not survival?”
Terra gapes. “I don’t know, but I need to own my mistakes. I should have accepted my setbacks and my weaknesses…I wasn’t a good friend to you.”
Aqua sighs. “Don’t tell me you don’t deserve it.”
“I don’t want to think about what I deserve. I only know that you deserve better.”
Deserving and not deserving sound like arbitrary definitions, markers of work ethic and integrity when everyone deserves peace of mind. “Then it sounds like you need to work really hard in the next couple of weeks.”
He blinks at her sudden change of tone. “Doing what?”
“Passing the Mark of Mastery.” She looks at her knee. “If you want me to keep my title, you have to pass.”
“You’re keeping your title regardless.”
“Pass and become Master with me.”
“Aqua,” he warns.
“That is the only condition.”
Terra leans his elbow on the backrest, and laughs into his hand. Laughs. It’s a weak and unpracticed song. She forgot what it sounded like. “You drive me crazy,” he says, “but it makes me so happy.”
She swallows. “I’ll contact Yen Sid to schedule the date.”
“Don’t get cheeky. You haven’t won this conversation.”
“Yes, I have.”
When the chuckles shared between them fade out, Terra studies her face, starting at the tip of her forehead, running his eyes down her nose and lips. The quiet is unwelcome.
“Do I look different?” Aqua asks.
“Not really.” He blinks, and it’s too dark to tell if he’s staring into her eyes. “You don’t smile like you used to. It’s like you’ve dimmed the lantern.”
“I can say the same about you,” she says. He’s tired, leaning on the couch like he can’t sit up on his own. He needs effort to speak. When he smiles, they’re delayed, as though he’s lost and needs to be reminded that he lives in reality now. He’s still beautiful. Terra doesn’t ask her to elaborate, but she supposes he understands exactly what she means. She supposes it’s the same for her.
Terra takes her hand and pulls it closer to him. “I do feel better with you around.”
Aqua grips the fabric of her stocking. “The last real conversation we had shouldn’t have been a fight.”
“It’s nothing to be sorry for.”
“Oh.” She holds her breath. “Wait, I shouldn’t be sorry for the fight or…” The kiss? She can’t bring herself to ask.
Terra smiles into his knuckles, and a spark of flame ignites his eyes. That’s what it is. Their hearts are tired. No book in the library can teach them how to bring them back to life. How to give it an ounce of oxygen to fan the warmth. Or how to provide a touch of oil, a passionate something to make it burst and remind them what it’s like to really want to hold a Keyblade. Aqua wonders if Terra’s essay on the subject is somewhere in the Master’s old office.
“You know what, I’m sorry,” Terra says, stroking his thumb on the back of her hand. “For that stupid fight. For being stupid enough to have issues with you being Master and for leaving. For being incredibly stupid for not staying in Radiant Garden with you and Ven.” He giggles again.
“Why is that funny?”
“I should have stayed and kissed you longer.” He blinks back tears, inhaling sharply in shock of what he just said. “I guess I needed to get that off my chest.”
Aqua snorts and brings a hand to her cheek. “Yeah, you should have stayed and kissed me longer.”
They say nothing else. Terra takes her face into his large hands and brings her to him, lips to lips, warmth on warmth, chest to chest, heart to heart. He breathes into her, pulling her waist in so she could lie next to him, his heartbeat loud and clear, eager and anxious. A fire grows inside her stomach—she’s forgotten she’s ever felt like this before, years ago when they’ve touched and never went further. It’s invigorating, it’s relaxing. Not a blaze born out of excitement but a gentle hearth, something more than a flicker of the flame in a lantern. Alive.
He mumbles into her ear. “By the way, I have every intention of being the better kisser.”
“Excuse me?”
“Just so you know.”
“We’re really going to be doing this with the kissing?”
“Doing what?”
“What we’ve always done.”
“There’s no contest here.”
“But you want to be the best kisser.”
“I will be the best kisser.” He smiles, digging his nose into her hair. “I must be good enough for you to enjoy it. Therefore, naturally, I have to aspire to be really damn good. That’s all.”
Aqua giggles into his chin, soft and careful and excited when his arm curls around her waist, squeezing her into him. She loves that he laughs with her. She loves his beautiful, cocky face.
They exchange small words in between, a gasp of surprises, whispers about old memories, requests for what she wants, for what he wants. Two wicks to a single candle, held gently between their hands.

You couldn’t quite pinpoint when this feeling had started.
It might have been last week. You’d had a particularly rough mission and even though everyone just about made it back in one piece, your team took a hit. If it wasn’t that, it might have been the fact you weren’t sleeping very well. Or, maybe it was just everything. Your job was demanding and the war was draining and you were a human being, goddammit.
The fact that Poe had also been pulled in a million different directions that week wasn’t helping either. You had your close friends - Rey and Finn and Jessika and Snap - but none of them knew you like he did. They didn’t see the change in your mannerisms or the way your smile was a little bit more hollow than usual. Poe was there, but not as much as usual. It was no fault of his own, but timing truly was being a bitch.
‘Morning, gorgeous,’ Poe called across the mess hall, having spotted you at a table with Finn and Rey.
You were half-slumped on Rey, your eyes heavy with sleep as you leant into her shoulder. She didn’t seem to mind too much; she was busy chattering away with Finn, but they paused when they saw the pilot coming towards the table. He had a humorous look on his face, clearly entertained by the sight ahead of him. His heart always jumped a little when he looked at you, even if you were borderline drooling on the poor scavenger.
‘Morning, handsome.’ Finn greeted him upon noticing your silence.
‘They’re really out of it, huh?’ Poe furrowed his brow, taking a seat next to you.
As if you could tell he was there, you flopped from Rey’s shoulder and into his side. He pulled one arm around your shoulder and pressed a kiss to your temple, his hands playing with your hair. He’d seen you in passing but it had been a good few days since he’d actually been with you.
‘You gonna wake up, baby?’ He murmured quietly into your ear.
‘Kriff,’ you jumped awake suddenly, rubbing your eyes. ‘What time is it?’
‘Just coming up to 10.’ He replied.
It didn’t take him long to notice your appearance. Your eyes were tired and bloodshot, and you hadn’t given him your usual smile. They were things that only he would notice; your face was etched into his mind all the time. He had a photo of you on the dashboard of his jet, and another one on his nightstand. He could immediately detect even the slightest change.
‘Shit,’ you murmured. ‘I have to go.’
‘But it’s Pancake Friday,’ Finn helplessly pointed at his plate. ‘You love Pancake Friday.’
‘I have a meeting. And a million missing reports and-’ you abruptly stood up, immediately missing Poe’s warm touch, ‘- and I need coffee.’
‘Sweetheart,’ Poe tried to grab you. ‘What’s up with-’
‘- I’ll see you later,’ you pressed a rushed kiss to his lips, scurrying away.
Poe let out a sigh of defeat, muttering something about can’t live with em, can’t live without em. You zoomed across the mess hall, clearly working on autopilot. You almost tripped over Leia on your way out, stumbling through the doors and out of sight.
‘Have you noticed anything different about Y/N over the last few days?’ Poe turned to the other two on the table.
‘Aside from her using my shoulder as a pillow?’ Rey joked, but noticed the worried look on his face. ‘She’s just been working a lot. It’s probably taking it out of her.’
Poe was still staring at the door that you’d stumbled out of a few minutes earlier. ‘Yeah, maybe you’re right.’
--
A few hours later, and after Poe had taken his lunch break, he went wandering off to find you. It was a slow few days for him, finally; he’d done his paperwork, briefed his team on their upcoming mission and cleaned his droid. BB-8 had rolled off to show Leia his shiny new antenna, leaving his master to wander the base to hunt you down.
Poe turned the corner, letting out an oof! when you collided with his chest. The lopsided grin that you loved so much suddenly appeared on his features, but it quickly fell when he saw your startled expression. It took you a few exhausted seconds to even process that it was him.
'What’s wrong?’
‘I-’ you began, stopping when a choked sob escaped your lips.
You were good at holding things in. You’d learnt to compress your feelings and be professional, but it was like the dam had finally broken. The last few days had caught up with you and they were beating the shit out of you.
‘Hey, hey, hey. take a deep breath.’ He pulled you tightly into his chest, arms automatically finding their way around your waist as he held you tightly. ‘I got you, it’s okay.’
‘I know,’ your voice was slightly muted by his shirt.
‘C’mon,’ Poe picked you up, carrying you a few doors down to your quarters.
He knew your passcode; punching in 2187, he kicked open the door, carrying you inside. He gently placed you on the kitchen counter, taking your face in his hands. He wiped away some of your tears with his calloused thumbs, holding your gaze in his warm eyes as he gently stroked your cheeks. It broke him seeing you like this.
‘Talk to me?’ He quietly asked.
‘It’s stupid.’
‘Your feelings aren’t stupid, baby.’ Poe chuckled gently, pressing a kiss to your forehead.
‘It’s-’ you began, letting out a huff. ‘It’s everything. The stress of the war got to me and I wasn’t sleeping so I thought taking on more work would help.’
‘Let me guess - it didn’t?’
You moved your hands from his shoulders, gently massaging them through his soft hair. You weren’t sure if you’d ever be over Poe; you’d never been one to believe in soulmates, but sometimes he was the only thing that kept you sane.
‘It didn’t,’ you confirmed. ‘I was just sad. Now I’m tired and sad.’
‘You’re the only person I know who would try to distract themselves from work with more work,’ He smiled sweetly at you. ‘It’s because you care so much, maybe too much. You’re constantly running around after me and Rey and Finn and Snap - but you’re forgetting about the most important person.’
You sniffed, scrunching up your nose. ‘You mean Leia?’
‘No, you dummy.’ Poe buried his face in your shoulder, shaking his head. ‘I mean you. You need to look after yourself.’
‘I’m trying. I just have a lot of meetings-’
‘- that’s a ridiculous excuse,’ his breath tickled your shoulder as he sighed. ‘I guess I’ll have to do it for you.’
He took your hand, leading you from the counter and towards your dresser. Poe rifled around for a few minutes, eventually pulling out a familiar shirt. It was one of his old button ups; it was about five sizes too big for you, but he couldn’t deny that you wearing his shirt was one of his favourite things.
‘How long have you had this?’ He chuckled, helping you unbutton your work shirt.
‘That one? I stole it the first time we slept together,’ you could feel yourself blushing.
Shimmying out of your jeans, you took a few steps towards the bed and collapsed into it. You didn’t even bother getting under the blankets - instead, you smashed your face into the pillow and let out a long groan. Catharsis.
Poe lifted up the duvet and pulled it over you, sliding underneath it beside you. He rolled over to face you; despite your tear-stained cheeks and glassy eyes, you were smiling at him. It was one of the first things he’d noticed when you first met - and since then, the sight of you smiling or laughing took the air from his lungs. You were so beautiful.
It sometimes felt like you’d come out of no-where. One day he was on his own, and the next you were with your terrible jokes and gorgeous face and he was a goner. He played the part of bad-ass pilot and whilst he very much was, he would do anything for you. He was waiting for the right moment, but he knew you were the right person to wear the ring he always had around on a chain around his neck.
‘Thank you,’ you murmured quietly, intertwining your fingers with his and placing a kiss on his hand, ‘I’m lucky I have you to look after me.’
‘I should be thanking you.’ Poe replied.
‘For what?’
‘For everything.’

Yes, Sir
Tumblr media
Req: Yesterday I was really desperate to be in the middle of a sekai sandwich, and honestly? I still am🥵
Pairing: Reader x Sehun x Kai
Genre: smut(m) + CEO!au
Words: 3007
Tags: slight derogatory kinks, sir kink, anal, dp
A/N: To the anon who requested this, 1. I love you and 2. Please let me know what you think!
A two-months-long internship at one of the most reputed modelling agencies was nerve-wracking enough. When you’d been accepted for your summer programme at O&K Models, you’d expected to be getting coffee for a bunch of snobby models who wore Gucci and ate like birds.
What you hadn’t prepared yourself for was to be working alongside the CEOs and making coffee for them: Oh Sehun and Kim Kai.
The duo complemented each other perfectly—Sehun was always fun and charming, teasing and flirting with you any chance he got while Kai was more of a reserved, quieter boss who only spoke when absolutely necessary with a gaze intense enough that you couldn’t look at him for too long without your mouth suddenly going dry.
But then you’d caught him gazing at you. What were mere glances had turned into blatant staring during meetings and slow smirks when he saw the blush creep up your face as he refused to look away, lingering touches on your elbow or arm when he wanted to talk to you, always gazing deeply into your eyes when you narrated his schedule in a way that made you forget what you were even saying in the first place and had you scrambling for words.
You’d assumed you were just overthinking it or reading too much into something that wasn’t there but then one night when you’d drove back to the office headquarters because you’d accidentally taken the list of models for the upcoming Fall Fashion Week along with your files, you’d ran into Kim Kai at the copier room.
“Mr. Kim,” you blurted, eyes wide as you froze where you were standing. You hadn’t bothered switching on the lights since you just needed to switch off the machine and leave but now Kim Kai stood at the door, arms crossed and a perfect eyebrow arched high.
How the hell does he look so attractive even in semi-darkness?
The streetlights from outside cast a slight blue glow into the small room with its closed blinds, the light somehow illuminating the side of his face.
“What are you doing here? It’s way past your office hours, Y/N,” he says softly, his voice sounding louder than you’d ever heard it due to the silence surrounding you.
Your breath caught slightly at your name falling from those plush lips—never had he called you by your first name in the entire three weeks you had worked here. It was always ‘Intern’ and he’d left the nicknames and terms of endearment to Sehun who creatively exploited it thoroughly.
“I, uh.” You cleared your throat as you tried to recall why you were here. Fashion Week. The list. “Right, I took the shortlist of the models for next week’s show along with my files by mistake and left some copies here that I forgot to throw out. I’ve kept the list back at Mr. Byun’s desk so don’t worry, I’ll just be on my way now.”
You forced a polite smile and strode forward to the door, fully expecting him to move. When he stayed still, a teasing lilt to his lips and intense gaze focused on you as you stood awkwardly in front of him, you hesitated before lifting your eyes to look at him.
Because the only other alternative was to stare straight ahead at his chest where the white shirt was stretched across the broadness of it since his arms were crossed, looking like the button would pop off any second.
“Do I intimidate you, Y/N?” Kai asked, his voice low and husky in a way that made your stomach flip.
You licked your lips nervously and immediately regretted it because that just made his gaze fall on your mouth. Your breath caught in your throat and Kai uncrossed his arms, burying his hands into his pockets and stepping forward so that you now had to tilt your head up to look at him.
“Answer me, Y/N,” He said in a tone that was demanding and authoritative in the way it usually was but for some reason was extremely turning you on right now.
Kai prodded, “Are you scared of me?”
You swallow, the sound echoing slightly as you finally manage to mutter, “I’m not scared, Mr. Kim. Maybe a little intimidated.”
He cocks an eyebrow in surprise at your reply, leaning forward. You can’t seem to breathe at the close proximity and from the mischievous twinkle in his eyes, you know he can tell.
“What are you intimidated by?” He steps forward, making you take a step back in surprise. “The fact that I’m your boss?” Another step, you take one back. “My looks?” Another step. “The way I look at you?”
You’re pressed up against the copier machine now, your hands behind you and clutching the edge of the machine for dear life as you look up at him.
“Y/N.” You blink at the sheer command in his voice, feeling your heart jolt.
“Yes,” you answer weakly, your heart hammering in your chest hard enough that you were sure he could hear it.
“You smile easily around Sehun,” Kai cocks an eyebrow challengingly, his hands suddenly rising to grip the same edge you were basically hanging off, his arms now encaging you between him and the machine.
“But you get nervous around me,” he continues, his voice a low rumble that made your toes curl. “You flirt with him all the time but you can barely look at me. I’m getting mixed signals here, Y/N. Do you like me more or not?”
Oh my god.
Your mouth had parted open sometime when he’d been talking, feeling slightly speechless as you blinked at him. What was he doing? Was this a confession or was he just playing with you?
You didn’t care, to be honest. He was making you nervous as hell but you would have never imagined that in a throng full of top-notch male and female models, Kim Kai would have taken interest in you.
A part of you couldn’t believe it. It felt like a fever dream, like if you closed your eyes tight enough or pinched yourself, you’d wake up and be in your car, driving back to your apartment.
Although Kai always got your stomach tightening with even the slightest glance, having him at such a close proximity right now where you feel the warmth of his breath fan across your face, surrounded by the musky perfume he wore, you felt like you were on the edge. He was so so close and yet, he wasn’t touching you. You’re certain that if he even laid a finger on you at this point, you’d melt into a puddle from the sexual tension that was suffocating you in the stuffy dark room.
And then, he said in the softest huskiest whisper:
“If I kiss you, Y/N, will you stop me?”
A short breath of disbelief leaves your lips involuntarily as your eyes widen at him. You still can’t seem to form a coherent thought that you can articulate so you do the next best thing.
You act on instinct and cock your head, gingerly pressing your lips to his.
And that’s all it takes.
It’s as if you unleashed a beast—Kai is immediately grabbing you roughly to him, pulling you flush against the length of his body as he devours your mouth hungrily. You moan into the kiss, your knees buckling and nearly collapsing in his arms as he holds you tightly, pressing you against the copier. You clutch at the lapels of his jacket, feeling overwhelmed in the best possible way as he slips his tongue inside your mouth.
Kai’s hands are rough on you as he grips your hips, roughly sitting you atop the copier machine. You hear it creak threateningly and you freeze, clenching your thighs as you pull away from him.
“It can’t hold my weight,” you breathe heavily, eyes wide as you try to not put too much pressure but Kai’s hands are already shimmying your skirt up, not bothered by your concerns.
He stops for a second as he stares at your thighs, hands atop the black lace thigh-highs you were wearing.
“Fuck, you’re so sexy,” he groans as his fingers reach higher and slip under the waistband of your matching lace panties. You hold your breath as you lift your ass from the machine to help him quickly yank it down your legs, his own foot lifting to stamp the thin suspended garment between your ankles and kick it aside.
He leaves the black stockings on, his hands roughly grabbing your knees to spread your thighs open before one hand reaches up. Your back arches at his impatience as you feel his fingers on your pussy—you think you’re probably slick with arousal and one look at the lust-crazed gaze in Kai’s eyes is enough to confirm that you were.
You don’t expect him to not hesitate, already quickly inserting a long digit inside your dripping entrance and curling it over your clit in a way that had you making filthy noises as you moaned, “Sir, I—”
His hand suddenly came to the back of your head, fisting around your hair to yank your head back so you could look at him.
“Call me that again,” he growls and you comply immediately, whimpering ‘Sir’ over and over again as he grabs your waist roughly and lifts you up. He’s yanked down his pants and underwear and when he holds you up in his arms, you can feel his erection against your wet entrance as you wrap your thighs around his slender waist.
“I want to see all of you in light so bad,” he grunts as he looks at you. “And touch and kiss every inch of your body until you’re begging for me to fuck you but I can’t wait right now.”
“God, please, just fuck me,” you groan as you slide your arms around his neck and feel his hands grip the flesh of your ass tightly.
“Wanna rephrase that?” Kai asks with an eyebrow cocked and you decide to play dirty, wrapping your hands around the back of his head, burying your fingers in his luscious locks as you press your forehead against his.
Lips on his, you plead with as much desperation as you felt, “Please just fuck me, Sir.”
Kai’s growl is absolutely feral as he slides his dick over your slit, collecting your fluids before pushing inside your pussy. You moan loudly as his hands control you—sliding you down over his length until you’re stuffed full of him. You bury your head in his shoulder as Kai bounces you up and down, the head of his erection brushing against your G-spot repeatedly in a way that had you screaming louder with each thrust.
In fact, you’re so loud that you don’t even hear the door open behind you until light spills into the room, illuminating the beads of sweat of Kai’s forehead and that’s when you realise Sehun was at the door, frowning.
“Kai, I swear to god.” You look over to see him rolling his eyes as he yanks his sleeves to his elbows, already unbuckling his belt. “I can’t believe you started without me.”
You’re breathing hard as the sudden reality sets into you—Sehun had just walked into the copier room where you and Kai were fucking like animals and he was quickly undressing as if to join you.
The realisation washing over your features makes Kai smirk up at you, the same dangerous smirk he’d had since he entered this damn room.
“You never did answer me, Y/N,” He says with a mocking tint to his voice and you’re whimpering now as he has slowed his thrusts. “Do you like me or Sehun more?”
You hear Sehun scoff at your back and you feel your stomach twist—either with the impending orgasm or the fact that Sehun was most likely removing his clothes behind you.
“That’s hardly fair,” he comments and his voice is closer now. Goosebumps rise on the back of your neck as you feel cool fingers on your hips suddenly, teasingly drawing over the curve of your ass.
“How about we both come inside her so it’ll be easier for her to decide?” Sehun’s playful nibble on your ear at the end of his filthy question makes you moan softly, arching your head back until you’re leaning back against his broad chest.
“Faster, Kai,” you’re whispering as you feel the orgasm that had been so close that you could almost see it, was now slipping quickly away from you.
“What’d you call me?” Kai grunts and you can’t even find it in yourself to call him ‘sir’ again, not when there was a growing frustration eating at you from your denied release. You felt Sehun’s chest pressed up against your back, his arms coming around you to hold you up until you were sandwiched between the duo.
“Patience, baby,” Sehun grinned and you gasped as you felt his long erection against your ass. Kai pulls out, arms still holding you up and you moan as Sehun moves his length all over you, collecting both your fluids and coating himself in it. You gasp loudly as you feel him push himself into your pussy, his length filling you in a way Kai didn’t and the feeling is so new and pleasurable that your eyes roll back in your head.
“Fuck, you’re wet,” Sehun mutters as he thrusts slowly inside you.
“Like a slut,” Kai agrees, making your pussy clench at the term and Sehun groans as he feels it.
“You like that, don’t you?” Sehun grins, pulling out and making you whine in protest. He pumps himself a few times and then you feel the wet spongy head suddenly push against your anal opening.
“Oh my God,” you gasped, eyes shooting wide open as you clutched onto Kai’s shoulders.
“Don’t worry, babe, I got you,” Sehun mutters reassuringly as he kisses the nape of your neck. “Trust us and just relax for me.”
You bury your head in Kai’s shoulder as Sehun painstakingly slowly pushes himself inside you, inch by inch. The slight sting of pain shifts into an indescribable pleasure as he stretches you out fully, his length making you feel like you were stuffed full. It wasn’t enough—you needed him to thrust.
“Se—oh my—Kai,” you broke into a high-pitched wail as Kai pushed himself inside your pussy. Your chest was heaving as you gasped, feeling him enter your tight walls that were stretching to accommodate him. Kai’s hands gripped your ass then, filling you to the hilt so you could feel his balls nestled against your pussy as both their dicks stuffed you completely full, your body suspended between them as they held you up.
“Oh god, I’m so full,” you mewled, tears stinging your eyes at the overwhelming sensations rushing through your body as you leaned your head back against Sehun.
“Shh, you’re doing great,” Sehun soothed you, kissing your throat. Kai was watching your face closely, no words of comfort from him but you could see the concern in his eyes. He suddenly leaned his head forward and you closed your eyes as you felt his tongue dart out and catch the tear rolling down your cheek.
And then both men began moving.
You whimpered as they found a rhythm, thrusting in and out of you as the lost orgasm quickly came back a vengeance, growing to a height that had your head spinning as they both fucked you fast and rough.
Your bodies were pressed up against each other, echoes of skin slapping surrounding you, the smell of sweat and arousal thick in the air while they both pounded into you mercilessly. You’d never had two men at once and definitely not ones with such impressive lengths and girth.
Your words were barely decipherable, moans and groans of their names as you felt the tightening in your lower abdomen, your heart pounding as they brought you closer to the high you so desperately wanted.
“I’m gonna come,” you panted, feeling your walls convulse in a tell-tale sign that you were close. “I’m gonna come, oh my—”
Kai slammed his mouth against yours, swallowing your scream as you came around his length. It immediately set off their orgasms as you felt Kai shoot his cum deep inside your pussy and Sehun came shortly after. Your body was trembling as thick spurt after spurt of cum shot filled both your holes, filling you up until you could feel it leaking over their dicks and dripping down the curve of your ass.
You collapsed in between their bodies, arms hanging limply off Kai’s as you tried to catch your breath. Kai slowly pulled out, holding your legs since he knew very well that you probably couldn’t feel them and most definitely couldn’t stand right now.
Sehun held you up by your waist too, his dick growing soft in your pussy and you could faintly feel the thick cream spill down in trickles on your thighs, completely ruining your stockings. Both Sehun and Kai stare at your legs as if mesmerised by the contrast of the white against the black.
“Damn, Y/N,” Sehun breathed, softly chuckling. “You did so well. I’m so proud of you, babe.”
“Not yet,” you heard Kai say, making you fully open your eyes to look at him as he pulled his pants back on. “I meant what I said about the light. I want to fuck you properly—not in a dark small copier room. In the light, in all positions and surfaces of our house. Think you can handle that, slut?”
Say no. Your body is exhausted and you can’t even feel your limbs, you’re sticky with tears and sweat and cum and you’re most probably sore from that rough delicious fucking, don’t you dare—
You licked your lips, leaning back against Sehun’s shoulder to smile at Kai as you say, “Yes, sir.”

SkyFire 3: Chapter 7
Harry at the BBC, Flicker Sessions & the other side of marriage: August/September 2017
Word count: 3.4k
SkyFire 3 MASTERLIST
I’m finally back! December really kicked my ass: I moved house, and I’m a manager in retail so christmas is always a nightmare but covid definitely made it worse. Anyway I’m back with another chapter and I’ve got the next few blocked out so hopefully I can get back to semi-regular updates :) Please help this story find new readers by reblogging and commenting.
As summer neared its end, Harry and Aurora travelled north to Manchester where they met up with the rest of the band as well as Jeff and Nick Grimshaw. It was hard for both of them to be back in town for the first time since the funeral, and even harder to be staying in Anne’s house which now felt far too empty without Robin’s infectious laugh and booming voice. They had arrive in town two days before the taping and both Aurora and Harry found themselves immensely grateful for the extensive soundchecks and filming obligations that kept them in town most of the time, only returning to the house in the evenings and turning in for bed relatively early to avoid the uncomfortable atmosphere in the home. On the day of the performance, after all Harry and Nicks segments were filmed and the band was ready to go, the doors were opened, and the small crowd was welcomed into the venue and prepared for the procedures of the taping.
The show was a huge success, with the crowd absolutely loving the entire thing. Aurora found herself unable to hold back her laughter several times while Nick interviewed Harry and she was often grinning as he danced around the stage, revelling in the infectious atmosphere of the crowd. Following the last song, well after the crowd had left and the only ones left inside were the band, Nick Grimshaw and their families, the crew worked on breaking down the set and everyone milled around with drinks in hand. They laughed together, sharing stories and eagerly discussing the upcoming tour. Aurora was tucked up against Harry’s side, his arm thrown comfortably around her shoulders as she lent her head against one of the swallows hidden beneath his shirt. She caught Anne’s eyes across the small group and the two women shared a soft smile as Harry’s booming laughter filled the air. In that moment she felt that despite the pain still felt in Robin’s absence, at the end of the day Anne was going to be ok. Both Harry and Rori had worried about heading off on a world tour and leaving her at home, but now Rori was confident that while her mother-in-law still had plenty of healing to go, she would be just fine while they were away from her. It was with clear consciences that the young couple were able to pack up their car and return to London the following day.
xXx
A few days after returning home from Manchester, Aurora took the opportunity to do something she had done quite often back in New York before she and Harry got married and made a permanent home for themselves in London. Life had been so busy since Jays passing the previous year that she hadn’t had a chance to start back up again in London and with the tour only weeks away she knew this was her final spare moment.
It took the better part of an hour for her to arrive after first taking a bus north to Knightsbridge from which she caught the Piccadilly line over to Russell square. She paused for a moment in the small patch of trees of Queen Square Gardens to collect herself before heading up the front steps and through the entry to the Great Ormond Street Hospital. An administrator was waiting in the lobby for her and after a quick greeting and handshake, Aurora was led upstairs and onto one of the kids' wards.
No matter how many times she made these visits, the first moment was always confronting. It was always upsetting to see so many tiny kids so sick and the exhausted, shattered expressions on their parents faces. No matter how often she did this there was always the briefest moment when her eyes threatened to tear up and she had to bite the inside of her cheek before plastering a bright smile on her face.
She spent most of the day there with the kids, admiring their drawings, singing songs for them, and playing with their toys. She spoke with the parents too, trying as best she could to brighten their day even if just a little bit. By the time she left she could feel the tears threatening to fall and instead of subjecting herself to crying on the tube, she ordered an Uber to get her home to where Harry was waiting with open arms and hot cup of tea.
She fell into those arms the moment she stepped into their living room, her entire body shaking with the great heaving sobs breaking through her chest. He didn’t say anything, knowing exactly how painful these visits were, having made enough of his own over the years. Whenever it had been his turn, his wife had been the safe harbour for him to return home to and now it was just his turn to help her weather the storm. He pulled a blanket over them as they settled into the sofa and he hummed softly, rubbing her back until her breathing finally slowed and she drifted to sleep, laying on his chest.
xXx
They hadn’t seen much of the boys since the wedding, so with Niall’s album launch fast approaching, Aurora was immensely excited to join him on stage to perform their duet Seeing Blind at his second stop on his Flicker Sessions tour. Following the first show in Dublin on the Tuesday evening, Niall flew into London early the following morning and Aurora met him at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire to rehearse ahead of the show the following evening. After a full day of rehearsals, Niall joined Aurora on her drive home, hugging Harry tightly as they arrived back at the Battersea Flat.
“Alright, alright,” Harry chuckled as he finally let go of the Irishman. “Get in here before dinner gets cold.”
They all sat down around the dining table, digging into the pasta dish Harry had made, catching each other up on the summers between bites.
“Can’t believe we’re both off on solo tours,” Niall said as Aurora cleared the table. “Seems mental to not all be cramming ourselves into the bus together.”
“I know,” Harry agreed sadly. “Feels weird to be making all the decisions on my own. Exciting though.”
“Agreed,” Niall chuckled. “Can’t bloody wait. Last night was absolutely buzzing and tomorrow’s gonna be so bloody great with Rors.”
“Gonna be so much fun Ni,” Rori echoed. “Been looking forward to this for weeks.”
“Speaking of,” Harry said. “Gem said she should get back into town about an hour before the doors open so I’ll probably wait for her and we can head over together. That work for you two?”
“Sounds good mate,” Niall nodded.
“Works for me baby,” Rori agreed, kissing Harry on the cheek. “I’m planning to arrive a few hours before doors open so I have time to get dressed and get hair and makeup done.”

The following evening Aurora waited backstage as Niall stepped out into the spotlight and began the show with The Tide. The crowd sounded electric and Aurora found herself far more excited than nervous to soon been joining him. The minutes flew by and Niall was quickly welcoming her out into the spotlight to a round of applause. He was smiling brightly as he started playing and sang the opening lines of the song, before Aurora joined him, a matching smile lighting up her own face. As they reached the chorus, Rori found herself dancing across the stage, the hem of her dress flaring out above her knees as she twirled. The song was over far too soon for her liking and she found herself more eager than ever for Harry’s own tour to kick off.

As September began, the stress had been building between the Styles’ for days. With the tour only  weeks away Harry was already overworked and exhausted. He was so full of anxiety, waking in the middle of the night to call Jeff to check on some tiny detail he’d just thought of and it had just kept piling up. Aurora had wanted to help him, wanted to calm him, and tell him that it would be ok, but she was consumed by her own fears. Despite how much she had enjoyed singing with Niall and how well their TV performances had gone over the past few months, she hadn’t lied to Liam all those months ago when she’d shared her fears with him that her disability would make her a liability to the tour. She couldn't use her prosthetic every waking hour of the day; it wasn’t healthy, both on a physical and mental level. Physically the prosthetic was never entirely comfortable, leaving her constantly aware that something foreign was attached to her body and mentally, while the transmitter was a technological marvel, using it for longer than a few hours left her exhausted and if she kept it on too long she was assaulted by the worst migraines imaginable. The fear of being unable to perform, of failing Harry, of not being what he needed was drowning her. She knew he loved her of course, but they had barely been married 5 months and she was terrified of being a burden, or worse still, of disappointing him and hurting his career.
All of this was building up between the two of them, the stress feeling like a thick fog filling their flat and weighing down everything in it. A week after Aurora performed with Niall in Shepherds Bush, and two weeks before they were set to fly out to San Francisco, it all came to a head, boiling over in a fit of anger and frustration; both of them saying things they didn’t mean just to win a point against the other. She wasn’t even sure what had ignited the flame but as soon as it sparked, neither could hold back until Rori knew she needed to leave before either of them said something they couldn’t recover from. Somehow, she managed to hold back the tears until the door closed behind her and she crossed the hall to the elevator, leaving her husband in their apartment, angry and alone. She let the tears fall as she rode the lift down the underground garage, thankful that it didn’t stop to pick up anyone else along the way. She was gasping for breath, sobbing hideously by the time she climbed into her car and started the engine. She wasn’t even sure where to go but she knew that she needed to go somewhere.
She was furious and she was hurt. They'd bickered over the years, they wouldn’t be human if they hadn’t, but he’d never raised his voice at her the way he did tonight and she’d crossed the line too, said things she didn’t mean and things he didn’t deserve. She wasn’t paying attention to where she was going but didn’t find herself all that surprised when she pulled up out the front of the Golden Stag. She parked the car in the side alley to avoid getting a ticket the following morning and made her way inside, attempting to wipe her tear stained cheeks with the sleeve of her sweater with her right hand, her prosthetic long forgotten back at the apartment.
It was nearing midnight and the place was mostly empty, only a few stragglers left in a booth by the fireplace. Helen was behind the bar, not looking up as she heard the door open. “We’re closing up,” she called out.
“Sorry,” Rori mumbled, causing Helen’s head to snap up, her face pinching in worry as she took in the young woman’s expression. She rushed out from behind the bar, pulling Rori against her chest and tucking her under her chin.
“What happened sweetheart?”
“Harry and I had a fight and I just had to get out of the house,” Rori admitted. “Didn’t know where else to go.”
“Of course baby,” Helen soothed. “How about we get you settled in your old room upstairs?”
Aurora nodded and allowed herself to be led towards the staircase and up to the small apartment where she’d grown up. She toed off her shoes and climbed under the duvet, while Helen sat on the edge of the bed and ran her hand over Rori’s hair.
“Do I need to go knock some sense into that boy of yours?” she asked.
Aurora shook her head. “He didn’t say anything worse than what I said to him.”
“Do you want to talk to me about it?”
“No.”
“Ok sweetheart. Try to get some sleep and I’ll see you in the morning.” Helen stood up and headed for the door. Just as she was about to step through, Aurora's voice gave her pause.
“Thank you, Gran,” she mumbled.
“Get some sleep baby,” she repeated, closing the door softly behind her.
When she woke the next morning, she crept downstairs, noting the missed calls from Harry when she checked her phone. The pub wasn’t open yet, so it was deserted but for Helen and Greg cleaning up and preparing for the day ahead.
“Good morning sweetheart,” Helen greeted as Aurora perched herself on one of the many bar stools. “You hungry?” Aurora shook her head. “How about a coffee?”
“Yes please,” she mumbled, smiling softly.
“Helen said you didn’t want us giving Harry a piece of our minds,” Greg added while his wife turned to the coffee machine, “but if you change your mind you just let me know. If he hurt you...”
“He didn’t,” Aurora cut him off. “At least not how you mean.”
She was interrupted from explaining further as her phone rang. She pulled it out of her pocket, glad that it wasn’t Harry’s face on her screen. She answered the call with a soft “Hello?”
“Rori, where are you? Are you safe?” Louis asked, worry clear in his voice.
“I’m fine Lou,” Rori promised. “I’m at the pub.”
“Thank god,” she heard him sigh. “H called this morning to see if you crashed at mine, said he’d already checked with El. He’s worried about you.”
“Well he can worry a bit longer, I’m not ready to talk to him.”
“He feels terrible for what he said,” Louis said.
“Don’t,” Rori sighed. “Please don’t get in the middle of this.”
“I won’t, sorry,” Louis replied. “Just promise you’ll text him and let him know you’re safe and that you’re not ready to talk. You and I both know he’ll spiral if he doesn’t hear from you soon.”
“I will,” she promised. “I gotta go.”
“Ok, love you.”
“Love you too Lou.”
Once she hung up, she did as she’d promised and texted Harry to let him know where she was and that she needed some time alone before she was ready to see him.
After finishing her coffee, Aurora left the pub and drove back home to Battersea after promising to call Helen later to let her know that everything was ok. She parked the car in its usual spot but instead of heading to the elevator and up to where she knew her husband would be waiting for her, she instead headed out to the street level and wandered along the banks of the Thames until she reached the Peace Pagoda. The sun was shining but there was a chill breeze blowing in off the water, not uncommon for autumn in London and Aurora pulled her thin cardigan tighter around her, lamenting not having a jacket while she walked. After staring at the familiar pagoda for a while, she turned left and headed into the park, passing the bandstand until she reached her favourite section of the park, the subtropical garden. She found a seat on a nearly dry bench and sat, watching people as they roamed between flower beds and posed for photos. The previous night’s argument played through her head. It was far from the first argument she and Harry had ever had. They’d been together for almost 4 years and it was only natural to bicker and disagree, but they’d never really had a smack down, drag out fight like this one before. He’d never yelled at her the way he had, standing across from each other in the kitchen, and she’d never stormed out the way she had. This was uncharted territory for them both and while she regretted what she’d said, she worried that Harry would not be so quick to forgive. He wore his heart on his sleeve and she had witnessed over the years how unwilling he could be to forgive when he felt that he had been betrayed. For much of the year, Louis had been trying to convince him to mend things with Zayn and while Harry was happy that the two men were reconnecting, he had no intention of forgiving his ex-bandmate after all these years.
It was all of this that was running through Auroras head as she sat in the park, trying to figure out how to apologize for the terrible things she had yelled. She already forgave Harry for his own hurtful barbs, but she was feeling so unprepared and out of her depth when it came to repairing the damage rendered to her marriage. Not only did the thought of Harry hating her or resenting her cut at her like a knife, but the start of tour was only 2 weeks away and she knew that they needed to address what had happened and try to fix it, or the tour would be doomed before it even began.
Eventually Aurora accepted that she had stalled long enough and headed for home, finding the apartment worryingly silent when she finally stepped inside. She padded along the hall, peering into each room as she passed, eventually finding Harry at the piano in their studio, his shoulders slumped and his hunched back to the door. She leaned against the doorframe as she watched him run his hands along the keys, only moving forward when she noticed the way his shoulders shook with every shaky breath. He stirred when he heard her footsteps, immediately lurching to his feet and she felt her heart break a lit bit more at the look on his face. The moment he turned to face her it was clear that he had barely slept since she left the night before. His eyes were red and puffy and filled with so much sadness that Aurora felt her own eyes grow warm with tears seeing the man she loved more than anything in so much pain.
“I’m so sorry,” she gasped, quickly closing the distance between them, and throwing her arms around him.
Harry held onto her just as tightly, whispering his own apologies in her ear as they both cried. They simply held each other for long minutes before finally pulling apart and looking into each other’s eyes.
“I shouldn’t have yelled at you,” Harry said. “God I’m so sorry I love. I never meant to say any of that.”
“I know H,” Rori replied softly. “I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have said any of what I did either. We were both stressed, and I know it doesn’t excuse what we did but I know that you didn’t intend to hurt me, and I hope you know I’d never want to hurt you either.”
“Of course, I know that,” Harry gasped. “Never doubted it for a second.”
“So, what do we do now?” she asked. “How do we fix this?”
“We can’t pretend it didn’t happen,” Harry admitted. “Think we need to sit down and talk about what we said. Figure out why, so we never get there again.”
“Ok,” Rori agreed. “Think maybe we could just snuggle up on the sofa for a bit first?”
“God yes,” Harry sighed. “Maybe a little nap too. Couldn’t sleep at all without you and I’m bloody exhausted.”
“A nap sounds pretty great,” she agreed with a small smile, intertwining their fingers as they headed down the hall together. They both knew the conversation awaiting them wouldn’t be easy, but they both knew that they belonged together and they would get through this speedbump just as they had overcome ever other obstacle that had faced together over the years.

Female Orc x Female Reader (NSFW)
Orc Lady MMA fighter!  This story contains drinking, swearing, professional fighting, and gratuitous smut.  Forewarned is forearmed!
----
Your family had always been avid watchers of what other humans would consider violent blood-sports.  Modern cage fighting is an art, especially when you’re dealing with someone whose major mode of fighting is submissions and takedowns.  There’s something incredibly thrilling about it, and considering they’re two consenting, sapient adults there’s nothing you feel guilty about when it comes to watching them fight each other.
Your sister-in-law, your brother’s wife, was having her first professional bout.  She had started working at a BJJ gym when she moved to your city during college, before she ever met your brother.  It isn’t that she had ever thought this is where her life would take her, she started taking classes in fact as a mode of self defense and a healthy physical outlet.  Her being good at it came as a complete surprise to even herself.
Your brother was out of town on a business trip, a sad fact of life considering his profession and position within the company where he worked.  Finance could be time consuming and thankless, but the paycheck he got from his work meant that Liz could pursue her new dream of going pro.  As her sister now, and considering you’d always wanted a sister growing up, you took it upon yourself to support her whenever your brother couldn’t.  You’d go to her bouts, cheer her on, go drinking when she won and when she lost, iced her bruises.  You loved her like a true sibling.
So, when your brother couldn’t make her first big fight, you were incredibly flattered when she asked if you’d join her instead.  You donned the tee shirt she had made for the fight with her fighter name on it and some sponsors, made sure you looked presentable enough for when you’ll inevitably wind up on camera with her, and settled in for the evening.  Your day started hours before the doors opened, helping her get in the right headspace with music and jokes, helping her stretch out, keeping her calm and centered.
When the two of you made the trip over to the venue, a huge arena where the local professional basketball and hockey teams played, you were surprised to see people already waiting outside by the athlete’s entrance.  You guessed they were hoping to catch a glimpse of the big names, but you knew enough about how these things were run to know that they wouldn’t arrive until at least a few fights into the undercard.
Liz’s fight was second to last on the undercard, so the house would likely be packed by that point.  You didn’t know whether to be thankful or not, her placement on the card meant that more people would see her fight and therefore if she’s good enough in the cage tonight she’d get more followers and her pro career would start off on a great note.  That being said, the performance anxiety of your first fight is hard enough you’d assume, if the way she’s been acting the last week is any indication, so making it harder on her by adding the pressure of a bunch of drunk, judgemental attendees doesn’t seem like it would be great.
The two of you traverse the back hallways, with passes that get you into the behind the scenes staging area.  As one of the few women fighting tonight she was given a semi-private area to warm up and keep limber.  All four of the undercard women were in the visitor’s locker room, although there had been privacy created with the use of moving screens that the maintenance crew had set up to create some relatively spacious individual cubicles.  There was one main card title fight between two women, an orc defending her middleweight belt for the twelfth consecutive time and an upcoming athlete from Russia who was undefeated, those two each got their own private warmup space same as the men on the main card.
The two of you were the first ones here from Liz’s crew, a fact which amped her up and not in the good way.  “Marcos said he’d be here at three, fuck me it’s already three fifteen, come on.”  You pull her into a hug, smoothing your hands over the french-braided pigtails you’d helped her with earlier.
“Relax, sis, just relax.  You know how the trains are at this time of year, if he isn’t here in the next twenty minutes I’ll call over to the gym and ask when he left, deal?”  She huffs but nods against your shoulder, hugging you back.  “Breathe with me, okay?  Easy in, and out, nice and slow.  You’ve got this, you’re going to go out there and kick some serious ass, and then we’re going to sit in our nice ring seats and celebrate by getting obliterated on vodka and soda like a normal Friday night.”
The laugh she gives you, shoving you away playfully, is what you were going for.  “If you think I’m paying for the expensive garbage vodka they have here you’re out of your fucking mind.”  You scoffed and rolled your eyes, pulling up the side of your tee shirt to show a large-ish hip flask, the one she gifted you when she asked you to be a bridesmaid.
“We’ll have to supplement it with a few expensive drinks, so we don’t raise too many eyebrows, but you know me better than that by now.”  She reaches for it and you swat at her hand, wagging your finger in her face like a caricature of a mother.  “No, bad Lizzy, no drinking before fighting.”  She pouts at you and you can only laugh at her.  “How mature, which one of us is older again?”
“Yeah yeah, I hate when you’re right.  At least give me some water, you don’t want me in there all dehydrated.  Help, I’m wasting away right before your eyes, dying of thirst.”  She’s comically flopped across her bench, arm slung across her face in despair.  The ‘oof’ she gives when you gently lob her water bottle at her stomach makes your snort out a laugh.
“Come on, don’t abuse my fighters before their bout.”  Your shoulder is clapped by a huge hand and you turn to find the bright smile of Marcos, Liz’s coach, and his brother Julian her cutman.  Her third corner man won’t be joining you until closer to fight time, coming from his normal day job to help out in her corner as he does in their training ring.  Marcos and Julian are both objectively incredibly handsome men, if a little rough from years of fighting experience.  Tall Brazilian walls of muscle, with tan skin and long curly black hair.  Julian would probably be considered better looking, if only because Marcos has some serious cauliflower ear going and one broken nose that wasn’t quite set properly.  They’re both quite tall and fit, but not really your type considering they’re packing some equipment you’re not into using.
Marcos gives you a serious look, but still warm.  “You’ve done a good job keeping her head clear and relaxed today, thank you.”  Liz is busy chatting with Julian and getting properly stretched out, and Marcos keeps his voice quiet enough that they don’t overhear.  “It’s going to make tonight go much smoother if we can help her focus on the fight and not everything surrounding it, so thank you.”  You just blush and smile, waving it off.
“She’s my sister, I love her, I want her to go out there and kick some ass.  So, anything I can do to help I’m happy.”  He beams at you, patting your cheek with almost fatherly affection.
“Good, you remind me of my brother.  We’ll have to start training you to be in the corner with us if you can keep her this calm on a big fight day.”  You laugh, but when he declares he’s serious answer back that you’re absolutely willing, but today is not the day to start.
The next few hours are a blur of keeping Liz distracted enough that she can slip into her fight-brain as she calls it, and before you know it you’re place in ringside seats reserved for families to watch the bouts waiting for her entrance song.  At the first few bars of ‘Knights of Cydonia’ you stand up and start to cheer.  You’ve got your cell phone out and recording, knowing she’s going to want to see later, and you go wild as she finally steps out onto the arena floor and makes her way towards the cage.  She ignores you as she passes, but you don’t take it personally knowing that she’s got tunnel vision for the door.
Her opponent Bryn is currently 1-1, a half-orc from a relatively prominent gym in a neighboring state.  She looks intimidating, considering she’s a few inches taller that your sister in law, but where Liz isn’t as tall she’s consideribly stockier, and their reach is surprisingly near equal in terms of measurements.
You’re sure the referee for Liz’s bout is a half-dwarf, if the insanely impressive braided beard down to his navel is anything to go by.  When his hand goes down between the fighters, Liz and Bryn tap gloves before getting into their stances.  It’s a few seconds of sizing each other up before Bryn goes in, closing the gap.  She sends out a pretty telegraphed jab and Liz blocks it without trouble, answering with a blow to Bryn’s ribs that connects.  Grasping the back of Bryn’s head, Liz tugs down to force Bryn’s face to meet Liz’s knee.
When Bryn’s head pops back up she’s sporting a cut on her nose, and she’s starting to leak blood down her cheek.  She grimaces at Liz and snarls, you suppose it’s meant to intimidate her but she obviously doesn’t know Liz very well.  Liz just roars right back and goes in for a takedown.
Bryn, you suppose, is a striker, if her lack of takedown defense is anything to go by.  When Liz goes for her leg Bryn is a step too slow to dodge, and goes down like a sack of bricks onto the canvas.  You cheer loudly “‘atta girl!” and watch with rapt attention as Liz locks her legs around Bryn’s arm.  The grip she has on Bryn’s hand and the way she tugs forces Bryn’s elbow back over Liz’s hip.  Bryn taps, the bell rings.  You scream.  Victory by submission in the first round, not even a minute in.  You’re almost cackling with joy as Liz does a celebratory lap around the ring before being hoisted up by her coach.
She thanks you in her post fight interview, and you look like a deer in the headlights when a camera gets trained on you and you’re up on the jumbo-tron.  Oh god, not like this.  You smile a little shyly and give an awkward wave before the feed cuts back to your sister in law and you can relax.  When she leaves the ring she grabs you from the seat and pulls you back with them.  “Holy shit!”  That’s about all the two of you can say for the next few minutes as you help her untape her hands and brush out her hair.  She’s changed into more normal clothes and the two of you are back out at your seats for the main card fights just as they’re announcing the winner of the final undercard bout.
“You were great out there, good fight.  You locked in that arm bar quick like nobody’s business, that’s a natural talent.”  You watch as your sister in law starts to converse with arguably the most gorgeous orc woman you’ve ever seen.  She’s tall just sitting, you don’t even want to hazard a guess at how tall she is standing.  Her long hair is side shaved, and pushed over the top of her head to expose the bare side and her pointy ear.  The cauliflower ear tells you she’s a fighter even before you notice how incredibly muscular she is.  She’s broad with huge biceps and traps, her breasts are a bit small for her frame and she hasn’t bothered with implants, and you want to know if she has abs.  You bet she does.  She and Liz are talking shop, and you’re trying not to stare at this hot, hot orc.  Liz glances at you knowingly, she knows your type, and snags her arm around your shoulders to pull you in over her, introducing you.
“Ushat, this is my sister in law and constant cheer section.”  You introduce yourself by name to Ushat, and she shakes your hand with her huge and calloused one.  She looks like she’s blushing a little when you two make eye contact, so you try to hit her with your sweetest and most affectionate smile, the one that’s melted more than a few hearts in your time.
“It’s really nice to meet you Ushat.”  She’s definitely blushing now, but she smiles at you gently.
“If you two want to hold hands you could just say so and switch seats with me.”  Liz smirks at you, and the two of you just now realize how long you’ve been shaking hands for.  You both pull away like the other one is on fire, cheeks hot and stuttering out apologies.  “So Ushat here is the current women’s heavyweight champ.”  You stare over at her with wonder, which makes the green in her cheeks get darker as she blushes harder.
“Ah, yeah, y’know.  Been fightin’ for a loooong time.  Kinda orcish culture.  I’m impressed your sister here was able to take down that half orc so handily.  I think my kind tend to underestimate humans because some of you are very cute and small.”  She smiles a little at you, her impressive tusks flashing in the low light of the arena.  Liz, for what it’s worth, looks incredibly smug.  Self-satisfied barely begins to describe it, she’s been talking about setting you up on a date for a long time but this kind of takes the cake.
“Alright ladies, I’m going to get a round of drinks.  You two be sitting next to each other when I get back or no more flirting, I don’t want to be between the two of you anyway ‘m gonna get diabetes, you’ll ruin my career before it’s even started.”  She’s jokingly frustrated and shoves the side of your face with the kind of aggressive affection only a sibling can manage.
Ushat is still blushing a dark green, her lightly mossy skin made dark emerald with it.  She slings one of her huge arms over the back of the now vacant chair where Liz had been sitting.  With her free hand she gestures a little shyly at the now free seat, looking satisfied if a little surprised when you blushingly sidle up next to her.  Your thigh is soft compared to hers, you’re pretty sure anyone is soft compared to her considering how close she’s pressed against you.  The way her stance widens in the chair ensures that you’re pressed together from knee to hip, and she even relaxes her posture some to press up against your side, your shoulder neatly tucked underneath her arm, your head slotting onto her shoulder like you two were made for each other.
Liz’s grin goes almost impossibly wide as she sees the two of you while walking back.  She doesn’t say anything though, knowing how shy you and Ushat have been so far in your interactions she doesn’t want to run the risk of scaring you two apart.  So she passes the drinks around instead and proposes a toast to new friends, the little eyebrow waggle at the end she just could repress.  You snort a little laugh into your cup but take a deep drink, sighing at the light burn of the double pour.  “The bartender gave us an extra pour on top because of how badass I was.”  Liz preens, and Ushat gives her a proud grin.
“Rudolf doesn’t do that for just anyone, so you’ve made a good impression.  Unsurprising!  That fight really was great.”  The two continue to talk shop over you, but you can’t find it in you to mind too much.  You enjoy listening to the deep timbre of Ushat’s voice, and before you know it you’ve finished your drink, topped off by a healthy pour from the flask at your side, and snuggled further into the warm side of the orc next to you.  When they announce the first fight and the first of the two fighters starts to walk out to their music Ushat begins clapping.  She doesn’t pull away from you though, or remove her arm, no she crosses her other arm in front of you to basically pull you into an embrace.  She isn’t giving thunderous applause, just enough to be polite, but it does pull you further against her to the point that you have to brace yourself up with a hand on her side.
When she stops applauding after the second fighter has made it to the ring you don’t make any moves to pull back.  You keep yourself snuggled into her side, one hand resting on her firm stomach while your head is leaned fully against her shoulder.  You’re definitely getting past the tipsy stage and into the drunk stage, if how affectionate you’re feeling is anything to go by.  The arm Ushat has behind you shifts so that you’re corralled in the crook of her elbow while her hand lifts to thread her fingers in your hair.  She smiles down at you, and you can only grin back up at her.
The night is kind of a blur, although you and Ushat have gotten to know each other better.  Sometime around the fourth bout of the main card they announce that she’s in the arena, and she’s thrown up on the jumbotron with you still tucked into her arm.  While the majority of you is cut out of the main shot, the camera does manage to catch her pressing a kiss to the crown of your head when she thinks they’ve cut away.
It’s late by the time the fights are over, the orc having successfully defended her belt once again and declaring herself the greatest.  Ushat is pleased, passing on her congratulations in orcish with her arm still around you as the fighter passes by.  When she stands for the first time that night you realize how huge she really is, the top of your head just barely reaches her clavicle.  She laughs loudly, palming your head and tugging you close again.  “You’re so dainty!”  She sounds amused, pulling your hand up against hers and holding them palm to palm the tips of your fingers only reaching the first knuckle of hers.  “Look!  I can almost close my hand!”
It’s such a smooth move you don’t actually recognize it for what it is until the day after, and when she does in fact close her hand she laces her fingers through yours.  She tugs you around and you follow without protest, her and Liz having become fast friends and Ushat taking Liz to meet some promoters and sponsors.  You feel a bit like arm candy, the conversation mostly above you but you’re happy that Ushat and Liz want you there with them.  It’s nearly five in the morning when you all leave and the three of you are sufficiently trashed.  The stumble back to your apartment is a short three blocks, and Liz takes the pull out couch as she’s used to.
You’ve stripped off your jeans and shirt, your bra undone and halfway off you when Ushat walks into your room having come out of the bathroom.  You freeze with your bra pressed up against your breasts by your hands but otherwise unsecured, and you can’t help staring at how much smooth and scarred green skin she’s showing.  She’s in a skimpy spaghetti strap tank top and black bikini cut panties.  The grin she fixes you with is sultry, her dark eyes burning.  “Don’t stop on my account kitten.”  Her eyes rake over your bare legs and the way your panties hug your form, lingering on the softness of your stomach before moving up your neck to your blushing face.
You bite your lower lip in contemplation before slowly lowering your hands and letting you bra drop to the floor.  Ushat lets out a low and pleasure growl, almost humming.  She stalks up to you, towering over you and gripping your chin between her thumb and forefinger.  She stoops down to kiss you, and with a satisfied moan you slip your hands up her chest and over her shoulders to cling to her.  Her huge hands caress up the back of your thighs and she takes advantage of your distraction to pick you up and toss you on the bed.  She’s hypnotized by the way your breasts bounce as you settle on the mattress, and she brings her hands up to cup them.  Thumbing over your nipples she grins as you let out a whine of pleasure.
Ushat kisses you again, and the smooth cool surface of her tusks pressed against your soft cheeks.  You surprise her by swiping your tongue along her lower lip first, and she opens her mouth to meet your tongue with her own.  They caress each other, rather than wrestling for dominance, and when you lay back and allow her to explore your pliant mouth she knows it’s willing and not coerced.
One of her hands continues to grope and your breasts sloppily, moving back and forth with her attention as her other hand pushes down your stomach and under your panties.  You tug your lips from hers to throw back your head and cry out for her.  “Fuck, Ushat!”  She chuckles huskily against your neck when you cry out for her.
“That’s the idea kitten, don’t worry ‘m’gonna take good care of you.”  When her fingers push between your labia she finds you already wet and waiting, and she snarls against your neck.  “Fuck baby, you been ready for me all night haven’tcha?”  She bites down on your shoulder, chuckling again as your hips buck up into her hand.  “Ushat knows whatcha want baby, I gotcha.”  One of her thick, calloused fingers slowly pushes into your waiting pussy.  She groans at how hot and tight you feel around just one of her fingers.  “Fuck baby, you got a real tight pussy, gonna stretch you out nice and good.”  She licks up your neck wetly, biting harshly at your earlobe as she pushes a second finger into you, angling her hand to rub your clit with her thumb.  You let out a broken cry, tugging at her shirt in order to press against her skin on skin.
In order to avoid having to stop fingering you, she just tears off her shirt, leaving the tatters on the floor nearby as she smashes her lips against yours again.  Your hands grope at her strong back and shoulders before moving around to her front, skimming up to palm her small breasts.  Her dark nipples are begging for your mouth, and as if she knows what you’re thinking she shifts her position just enough to be leaning completely above you, fingers pumping in and out of your soaking pussy.  She groans when you lift your head enough to take one of her nipples in your mouth, sucking gently and flicking your tongue over the hardened bud.
She moves so her hips are just above yours, her legs splayed between yours and wrapped around your own so that you couldn’t close them even if you wanted to.  She slowly leans down until you’re completely flush with her, held in control as she fingers your eager pussy.  She has you pinned with her weight to the point where you can do literally nothing but moan and accept whatever it is she wants to give you.  The broken sob of her name as she presses a third of her impossibly thick fingers inside of you makes her laugh, satisfied.  She kisses the crown of your head, whispering praises.  “Don’t worry baby, we’ll stop here for tonight, but eventually that cute little human pussy of yours is going to take my whole hand.”  The way you twitch around her at the words makes her chuckle against your hair.  “You like that thought huh kitten?  At least this needy pussy of yours does.”  She shoves her fingers in particularly harshly, making you moan and your eyes roll back in your head.
She starts rubbing her thumb over your clit again, and your walls begin to flutter with the stimulation.  “That’s it kitten, cum for me, gonna make you feel so good baby, that’s it.”  You’re panting under her, trying to writhe or buck your hips or do literally anything, but Ushat just chuckles at your shifting muscles pinned under hers.  “No baby just take it, you’re gonna take what I give you kitten.  Be a good girl and cum for me.”
The way she growls that last sentence in your ear, paired with the endless stimulation of your clit and those thick rough fingers inside you, takes you over the edge.  You cry out her name and tense underneath her, muscles screaming to contract or do anything.  All your body can focus on is the feeling between your legs, considering it can’t do anything else with its excess energy.  You can’t believe when you squirt against her hand, but she just gives a satisfied growl and slowly brings you back down to earth.
You’re half asleep by the time your heart rate calms down, and you notice Ushat is trying to climb out of bed.  You pout up at her sleepily, grabbing her huge wrist.  “Stay?  Please?  I know this was fast but I was kinda hoping you’d stick around.”  She just grins at you, using her cleaner hand to thumb your cheek with open affection.
“Just gettin you a towel, kitten.  Gotta clean you up.”  She wanders half naked into the bathroom and brings back a damp hand towel to wipe up between your thighs, gently cleaning your labia with the warm cloth.  She tosses the towel across the room into your laundry hamper and crawls back into the bed behind you. She pulls you back against her chest, wrapping you up in her warm embrace and burying her nose in your hair at the crown of your head.
You aren’t sure when you fell asleep, quickly seems to be the answer.  You wake up to your bed shaking, and you whimper and cling closer to the pillow that seems to be jumping.  It calms down slightly, still vibrating but less destructive.  “Sorry kitten, go back to sleep.”  You crack open an eye and glance up at just the right time to get a kiss on the forehead from Ushat, who stayed the full night with you.
She’s on her Instagram, posting a picture of the two of you from last night along with Liz.  “Whatcha doin’?”  Your sleepy voice makes her smile gently.
“Gettin’ some damage control done.  I’m not about to have people accusing me of being ashamed of my girlfriend.”  She flicks over to an article on some MMA site where the still of her placing a kiss to your head ringside is front and center.  ‘Ushat Cruelbeast Spotted Getting Cozy With Fighter’s Sister!’ is the headline, and you snort.  Really?  So uncreative.  “I like you, a lot, I want to date you.  I don’t want people thinking I’m just using you to get under some other figher’s skin.  Which is fucking ridiculous by the way, I mean we’re not even close to the same weight class and never will be, so why would I be dating you to get under the skin of a figher I’d never fight?  Fuckin’ hetero dudes can’t fathom why a human girl might want to date a big scary orc girl.  Or why a girl would want to date another girl at all really.”
Your laugh makes her laugh, and the two of you are cracking up in bed.  It takes a few minutes to calm down and you find yourself draped over her chest while you rest your chin over her heart, looking up at her earnestly.  “I don’t think you’re scary.  I mean, you’re for sure huge, but you aren’t scary at all.  You know the first thing I thought when I saw you was some variation of ‘oh no she’s too hot, I can’t talk to her, she’s way too hot.’”  She snorts and buries her face into your hair, apparently her favorite thing to do whenever you embarrass her.
“Come on pretty kitty, let’s get dressed and join your sister for breakfast.  Then, ‘m gonna go home and get changed to take you on a proper date.  And then, kitten, we’re gonna start workin’ on that promise I made you last night.”  Your answering whimper makes her laugh, and she stands while hefting you up over her shoulder.  “Come on kitten, unless you want your sister walkin’ in and finding us like this.”  She emphasizes her statement with a firm slap to your ass, making you laugh.  This might be the best morning ever.

Twin Snowflakes pt6: A slow morning
Summer:.......
Shiva:*smiling* Aren’t you going to invite me in?
Summer:How is this happening?
Shiva:Come on, your are weak but not stupid. I’m sure you already have a few ideas. *skipping to the bed*
Summer:.....I’m still sleeping aren’t I?
Shiva:Bingoooo!!! *flops on bed* Gods I forgot how soft this bed was! It’s been ages since I layed here; reminds me of the real deal. Can’t wait to lay in it again.
Summer:*glares* Fat chance....
Shiva:Oh wipe that ridiculous look off your face and take a breather. No way I’m fighting you in this place. I just wanna talk.
The young woman layed back up and crossed her legs elegantly as she stared down Summer who was still in the door way. The smug smile that she wore was nothing new to her condescending attitude but it held a certain light hearted feature to it. Summer could tell that Shiva was telling the truth, so why did that only make her more anxious?
Shiva:There’s enough room in this bed for two you know?
Summer:I’m perfectly fine standing here. *tensing up*
Shiva:Whatever makes you less scared. Just when I thought you were getting more assertive. I guess it’s just desperation that made you steal those vials.
Summer:How....I was warm with that happened.
Shiva:Yeah but you’ve been thinking about it nonstop and obviously you’re cold enough for all this to happen. It’s only natural I find out; does natural even apply to us. Huh, something to ponder for later. Right now I’m way more interested in what exactly do you hope to accomplish. I tried digging deeper in that pretty head of yours but I can only get so deep, or maybe you’re winging it. *stands up*
Summer:Like I’d tell you. Just know your days are numbered.
Shiva:Funny, took the words right out my mouth. If anyone knows just how big the difference is from creating plan and executing it properly, it’s you. How many times has it been I wonder, since I left you freezing to death in your own mind? By now your friends and family have to be really tired of dealing with you.
Summer: Their problem is with you, not me!
Shiva:Now now Summer, do you really want to yell at me?
A chill ripped through her suddenly as her feet were frozen in place. The air itself started to get cooler to her discomfort. Despite her efforts, Summer started to shiver a little as Shiva walked closer. A piece of Summer really wanted to scream but refused to. The urge slowly growing though as her captors hand reached out to her. Nimble fingers on her left cheek caused the poor girl to nearly jump out her skin. Something told her that speaking wasn’t a good idea at the moment.
Shiva:That’s better, I really like this room the way it is. As I was saying, you’re nothing but a burden. The one’s you love wouldn’t be tired of me if you were strong enough to get rid of my from the start. Maybe then mommy dearest wouldn’t have a cute little scar that runs across the first one at the bottom. Man can she dodge like nobodies business. I wanted to leave a much bigger reminder of our meeting. If memory serves me well then it was diamond dust that caused the reaction and the whole apartment. History re-
Summer:*grabs wrist* That’s never happening again. You’re not catching anyone off gaurd by a long shot. We’ve learned many things in six years and you’ll feel like nothing but a bad dream in six more. My family will be just fine.
Shiva:Ah, there’s that little fire in your eyes. Always ready to come out whenever someone threatens mommy, daddy, or big brother. It’s the only time you are actually interesting. I wonder if it’ll keep you warm against me, or you’ll burn yourself by clinging to it?
..............
Shiva:Hmph, well I think I’ve had enough fun for the moment. I suppose I should let you rest while you still can; it’s only fair.
Summer:*lets go* Gee how thoughtful....
Shiva:Goodbye little one. I’m gonna enjoy this bed. *puts cover on the floor*
Summer:What are you-
Beep! Beep! Beep!
Her body jolts violently as her eyes open. The right side of her body aches and feels like it’s on something way less soft than she is used to. Slowly her senses come back and notices that she’s currently on floor next to a knocked over heater. Shiva’s surprise appearance started to make sense; just another precaution to add to the list. The dim light hit Summer’s face from the bedroom window told her it was still early. As much as she wanted to move back to her bed, all the strength she had was put into placing the heater back up right. Then she pulled the cover down to the floor with her and went back sleep.

Year round, Atlas always looked like a work out art at a museum in Nicholas eyes. Freshly fallen snow in the beginning of Winter though, that’s when Atlas becomes the center piece of it all. Crisp air tickles his nose as he walks down the quiet streets with two coffees in hand. Behind him the sound of snow crunching in his previous foot steps gets louder. He raises the coffee in his left hand for it to be promptly grabbed.
Valerie:Five sugars!?
Nick:With a small amount of cream for good measure.
Valerie:Man if there’s one thing I miss about school mornings, it’s this baby right here.
Nick:*chuckles* You do realize you could’ve gotten one of those at anytime you wanted right?
Valerie:Nah, they’re reserved for this moment every time or it feels less special. Coffee on the way to school is our thing; don’t want to abuse that.
Nick:If you say so. What happens when we eventually graduate then.
Valerie:I’ll get it once in a blue moon and remember all the good times of combat school.
Nick:Do good times and combat school even fit together like that?
Valerie:Now you sound like your sister. Speaking of which......
Nick:Doubt she’ll show up today.
Valerie:Such a shame. One of these days a teacher is gonna blow a fuse. I don’t even think the Prince of Atlas could stop them from expelling her.
Nick:They will as long as I make the school look good and please don’t call me that. “A prince is nothing compared to knight that chooses to defend him.”’ I’d rather be the knight.
Valerie:I don’t see why you can’t be both. Your parents might as well be kickass King and Queen but I digress. Can’t really blame Summer for wanting to skip the P.E. physical.
Nick:*eyes widened* Gods I’m stupid,m. Of course that’s why she’s not here. It skipped my mind the two of you have that today.
Valerie:Not surprising, you don’t wittiness the crap that goes down. One of these days I might just fight half the girls in that locker room.
Nick:That bad huh?
Valerie:It’s not like they’re even saying much either, but the way all of them stare. Silently judging and forming opinions about her scars makes me wanna drop kick all of them. *aggressively sips coffee*
He couldn’t help but smile at his oldest friend’s remark. Valerie definitely was never one to put someone in their place. She was typically open and blunt just like her mother. Frankly it was hard to tell if any of Ren’s mannerisms or genes; especially with her hair being short. He sort of missed seeing it long if he was honest with himself. She’s kept it short since the day she decided to start “exploring.” Nicholas took a long sip of his drink to avoid making a frown. Both of them would do anything for Summer; that’s his sister and Valerie is her closest friend as well, but he knows that friendship probably isn’t what compels her to help. He’d have to be naive to believe it was.
Valerie:Hmmm? What’s wrong Nicholas?
Nicholas:Nothing, just thinking about the test is all.
Valerie:Nice try, that’s not a “I’m afraid of a test look.” You’re way to smart and study hard. I bet that expression doesn’t even exist. Something else is up.
Nick:Well maybe this is the first time I’m worried about a test so you finally see the expression? *sips loudly*
Valerie:*pouts* I hope you know that you can tell me anything right? We’re best friends remember. *nudges him*
Nick:Yeah I know?(That’s the problem....)
Valerie:*smiles* So be straight with me instead of giving me the run around.
Nick:I just really want you to lo.........
Valerie:To....?
Nick:To....keep an extra good eye on Summer for the upcoming weeks. Classes are starting again, tournament preparation, the usual bullies, etc. It be a bit overwhelming for her in the beginning. Look after her if she needs any help.
Valerie:Of course! I’ll always be there for Summer!
Nick:Trust me, I know you will.
Valerie:That goes the same for y-
Nick:VAL!!!!. *grabs her arm*
He yanks her left arm to pull her in close to him The sudden movement causes her tense up as they see a car swerve onto the sidewalk at high speed before taking off moments from where she just stood. Her head is still processing the events that unfolded as her body is being held tightly against Nicholas’s shorter and slightly smaller frame. His body shaking with adrenaline. He began shouting at the car angrily.
Nick:LEARN HOW TO DRIVE IN THE SNOW DUMB ASS!!!!
Valerie:Wow, that was.....close.
Nick:*lets her go* Are you okay!? Nothing clipped you?
Valerie:......
Nick:Valerie!?
Valerie:*shakes head* Sorry, I’m alright. That was just ummmm, wow that was close. Lucky you were here. I guess it’s officially that time of the year again.
Nick:The only down side of all the ice and snow. Tsk, I gotta a deal with a whole season of this again. You sure you’re okay?
Valerie:*rotating shoulder* Yeah I’m good. Wasn’t expecting that yank but it’s better than a tire on my chest.
Nick:Oh, sorry about that. Guess I went full force.
A bluish bruise was left where he grabbed her arm. While he frowned at it, Valerie was actually a bit surprised and a bit impressed. Seeing Nicholas that serious outside of a match is a rare sight. Forever he’s cool, collected, and isn’t one to show up that much. She could count the number of times that he’s actually caught an attitude with somebody. Soon her aura kicked in and erased the bruise all together.
Valerie:Look, all better in no time at all. Also no need to apologize for saving my skin. *smirking* Been awhile since I’ve seen that level of pissed off from you.
Nick:*red* Well can you blame me!? Almost had a tragedy today.
Valerie:Oh but we still do...*points to the snow*
Both of them watch the white snow become dyed brown and melting from their spilled morning brew. Sadly they pick up the trash and continue to walk.
Valerie:Better the drinks than me but still a shame.
Nick:Sigh, Maybe I should’ve stayed in bed today too. Tomorrow let’s just ride the bus.
Valerie:*giggles* You’re the boss!
The two of them walked twice as fast to school until they ended up in front of the school. Nothing amazing about the building really. Just the regular combat/high school. Half the size of Beacon or Atlas maybe which makes since considering there’s no dorms. Just plenty of class rooms, a huge cafeteria, and a massive space in the back filled with multiple area’s designed for different sports. All in all the back had to be a least a couple of acres give or take but it’s mostly for the track and plenty of open space. They’ve arrived before most students even though they walked. Winter break must be making everyone a bit sluggish. Thes shiny white and gray hallways should have tons of people struggling to remember their locker combinations right now.
Valerie:Looks like most people are following your sister’s lead about school. Oh well, that just means science might be quiet for a change. Only one way to find out. *walking away* If I see you in between classes I’ll give you the inside scoop on the test.
Nick:I’d rather you just make sure you pass so all that studying wasn’t for nothing.
Valerie:Deal! Consider it my way of thanking you from earlier.
Nick:......
Nick:I don’t wanna be that guy but that gift doesn’t sound worth it.
Valerie:Hehehe, I guess you’re right. Give me some time to think about it. Love ya! *runs off*
Nick:.....Sigh, not the way I wish you would.
Valerie:(Hmmm for second I thought he had something in mind. Oh what to do? Maybe Summer can give me a couple ideas later; possibly even make a whole day out of it!) *grinning* Pfft wouldn’t that be nice?
Nick:*opening Locker* (Okay, Take notes in history for two, Ace a science test, lunch, free period, and then help organize the tournament. Should be a calm day.)
P.A. System:Would all members of the student council please meet in the auditorium during first period? Thank you...”
Nick:Okay, no notes I guess. I can always use free period. Still a calm day. *closes locker*
He turns around to see a middle aged black man dressed in a stylish black suit with a cyan tie and a black fedora with a ribbon around it that matches the tie. The man smiles at Nicholas who displays a neutral face that slowly turns into one of exhaustion, even though the day just started.
Nick:Hello Mr. Coal.
Flynt:Hello Nicholas, shall we talk in the courtyard or my office.
Nick:The principal’s office always has candy so I think you know my answer.
Flynt:Let’s mosy on then.
Nick:Sigh, I wish I still had my coffee.

Scar Tissue, chapter 7
You know that part of fancy dances where everyone weaves around the room switching partners until you eventually find your way back to your person?
Slash is getting dizzy. And he gets the feeling he’s not missing something so much as being left out of something.
Pairings: Slash/Duff, side Axl/Izzy, side Nikki/Tommy, side Steven/Vince
Warnings: ((not in this chapter)) Implied/discussed past abuse (non-explicit)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The show went by in a blur.
Slash felt like he couldn’t stop smiling, running and jumping around the stage more than usual just to get some of his excess excitement out, almost rivaling Axl’s antics. The energy was infectious, and all five boys found themselves in a feedback loop that carried over to the audience. By the time the show ended, Slash could barely remember what had even happened, but that didn’t stop him from being certain that it was one of their best shows to date.
And the second they made it back to the dressing room, Slash pulled Duff down for another kiss.
Steven cheered, throwing his arms in the air, “Fucking FINALLY!” As the new couple broke apart, the drummer threw his arms around both of them, turning to Duff with a grin, “I’ve been watching this idiot pine for MONTHS.”
“Excuse you, we’ve all been watching him pine, “Axl chimed in.
“I kept expecting him to bring some sad, lovesick song to rehearsal,” Izzy contributed.
“I hate all of you,” Slash pouted, Duff chuckling and ducking his head to hide his red face.
They all settled around the dressing room, coming down from the adrenaline of the show, alternating between teasing Slash and excitedly discussing the show. Axl walked back and forth, waving his arms as he rattled off the potential for their upcoming gigs.
Eventually, the door opened and the terror twins burst in, grinning mischievously. “I can’t believe you guys ripped off our look!” Tommy laughed.
“We still win though cause you don’t have heels,” Nikki declared, kicking out one foot to show off the platform boots dramatically.
Tommy snickered, “Still though, that was awesome!”
“Brace yourselves,” Mick drawled as he slunk in behind them, “Incoming in three, two-”
“HEY, ADLER!”
Vince shoved past his bandmates, pointing accusingly at the Guns drummer, “Don’t think I’ve forgotten about that bullshit two weeks ago! I’ve got a fucking bone to pick with you!”
Steven froze, staring wide-eyed as all eyes locked on the two blondes.
Just as Vince was taking a step forward, Tommy leapt forward, standing between the two and facing his singer, “Okay, alright, as much as I love a good fight, I distinctly recall telling both of you to just talk this shit out.”
“Fine,” Vince grit out, crossing his arms, “I’ll start: What the fuck, man?”
“Uh…” Steven glanced around nervously, Slash giving him a ‘go on’ motion encouragingly, “Right. Well,” he gathered himself and narrowed his eyes, “fine. I was high and drunk and you were being a dumb bitch.”
“Excuse me?” Vince screeched incredulously.
Slash sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, “Off to a great start there, Stevie.”
“Well, it’s true!” Steven snapped, “You tried to set me up with some random chick, of course I got pissed!”
“How is that a bad thing?” Vince exclaimed, “I was trying to help you get laid!”
“And I was trying to get laid by you!”
“Well I-... Wait, what?” Stuttering to a halt, Vince’s face was a mixture of confusion and surprise.
Steven threw his hands in the air in exasperation, “I’ve been flirting with you for months!”
“No you haven’t!”
“Yes I have!”
“Uh, Steven?” Slash raised a hand, cutting in, “Dude, I’m on your side, but you’re terrible at flirting. You literally don’t act any different than normal.”
There was a general murmur of agreement, Steven shooting a look of betrayal at his friends as Vince smirked in victory, “Hah! See!”
“Okay, well,” Steven glared, “even so, that night I was totally blatant! You said you needed someone to fuck and I told you I was available!”
“Ooooh, he’s got you there, Vinnie,” Nikki commented, he and Tommy snickering together in the corner as their singer glared.
“Well,” he was starting to look flustered, “I- you-... I thought you were straight!” he blurted out.
Steven’s jaw dropped, “Are you fucking kidding me?? Vince,” he gestured up and down at the singer and yelled, “no one is that straight!”
For a moment, the room is silent, Vince gaping as Steven’s hands curled into fists at his sides. Finally, the drummer sighed in frustration, “Fuck it, this is stupid. I’m sorry I punched you or whatever, let’s just-”
But before he could finish, Vince rushed forward and kissed him firmly.
There is only the briefest moment of surprised hesitation before Steven is wrapping his arms around the singer to pull him even closer.
Meanwhile, the other seven rockers in the room stared awkwardly. Eventually, Tommy started a dramatic slow clap. Unsure of what else to do, the rest of the group soon joined the applause.
“Fuck you guys,” Vince tried to look annoyed, but we was still grinning. He looked like he was going to say something else, but Steven pulled him back for another kiss.
“Wow. For a minute there I didn’t think this would end well,” Slash laughed.
“Apparently love is in the fucking air tonight,” Izzy mumbled, winking at Slash and Duff.
There was a soft thud, drawing their attention back as Vince pushed Steven up against the wall, and immediately the terror twins sprung into action, “Oh, oh boy, okay, time to go!” Nikki stated.
“Yup, trust us, Vince ain’t gonna slow down just cause he’s got an audience,” Tommy added, the two of them herding the group out of the room, managing to close the dressing room door just as the two blondes fell onto the couch together.
“I can’t decide if Vince is going to be more or less insufferable now,” Mick mused.
“Probably the same,” Nikki laughed, “But we are definitely late for the afterparty, so let’s get fucked up!”
The two bands (minus one singer and one drummer) once again made their way to Motley Crue’s apartment, and Slash found it funny how different this time was from the last time they partied together.
They were barely a block away when Nikki and Tommy honed in on Slash’s arm around Duff’s waist. Sharing quick look, the two quickly situated themselves on either side of the couple, Nikki next to Duff and Tommy next to Slash. It was a little absurd how tiny Slash felt next to the three of them.
“I can’t help but notice some PDA going on over here,” Nikki smirked.
“Don’t tell me today is couples day,” Tommy joked.
“Uh…” Duff stammered, glancing at Slash almost nervously.
Meanwhile, the guitarist puffed his chest out, grinning proudly as he tugged Duff closer, “You bet your ass it is. We beat Steven and Vince by a solid two hours,” he bragged.
“I didn’t realize it was a race,” Tommy said, “But in that case Nikki and I definitely win.”
“Damn straight,” Nikki high fived him behind Slash and Duff’s backs.
“I think the fuck not,” Axl snapped his head around, glaring, “Izzy and I left you slow burn fuckers in the fucking dust, thank you very much.”
“You tell ‘em, babe,” Izzy nodded.
“I hate being single,” Mick grumbled.
“I know Mick, I know,” Nikki patted his shoulder comfortingly, the guitarist swatting his hand away.
If Slash had been paying more attention, he might have noticed how Nikki and Tommy left him and Duff in favor of flanking Izzy and Axl, Nikki and Axl talking in hushed tones in a way that would have been suspicious. If Slash had been paying attention.
But he wasn’t. He was too busy walking on sunshine at getting to hold Duff so close, making the bassist blush as he complimented his playing at the show, kissing his cheek and the corner of his mouth every few minutes while Duff laughed and played with his curls as they walked. When he thought about it, part of him wanted to ditch the party- to just go home with Duff and have a few hours to themselves, to lay in bed and touch every inch of him, soft and slow.
As they approached the apartment, Slash opened his mouth to suggest to Duff that they split off. But before he got a chance, Tommy was sliding next to him, “Hey, Slash! I have a question,” he began cheerily, “You have a pet snake, right?”
“Um,” Slash blinked in surprise at the unexpected question, “I have a couple, yeah, but they’re back at my mom and grandma’s place.”
“Cool, cool,” Tommy nodded, throwing an arm around his shoulders, “I’m trying to convince the guys that we should get a pet, but Vince is allergic to cats, and Mick is allergic to dogs, so I was thinking a snake or something! What do you think?”
“Are you kidding me? No fucking way,” Slash laughed, “You guys can barely keep yourselves alive and you wanna add a pet? None of you should be responsible for any living thing ever. Just get a cactus or something.
“But I can’t cuddle a cactus!” Tommy pouted.
“I mean, not with that attitude!”
“You’re unhelpful as fuck, dude.”
Slash’s laugh was cut off as Tommy guided him through the window into the apartment. He hadn’t even noticed them walking up the fire escape. Blinking, he suddenly became aware of the lack of bassist at his side.
Furrowing his brows, he glanced around, “Hey, where’d-”
“I am way too sober, all the adrenaline from the show burned through everything in my system,” Tommy interrupted, dragging Slash over to the coffee table as strangers started pouring into the apartment behind them. The drummer quickly kneeled down, pulling a bag of white power from his pocket and shaking it at Slash with a grin, “Care to join?”
Slash paused for a moment in consideration, but finally shrugged, “Sure,” he crouched down next to him. He’d just do a quick line or two and then he’d track down Duff and whisk him away.
It only took a few minutes for Tommy to cut a few lines and for each of them to snort them up, both laughing as they felt the initial rush to their system. Wiping at his nose, Slash stood and nodded at the drummer, “I’m gonna go find Duff.”
Tommy gave him a quick wave before turning to chat with some of the partiers. The apartment had filled quickly, people passing bottles and cigarettes and bags of coke, voices layering over each other and someone throwing on a record to add even more noise. Looking around the room, Slash saw no sign of the tall blonde. Glancing at the window he had come through, he was thrown back to the last time he had come to the Crue’s apartment- the last time he had lost track of Duff.
Walking over and glancing out the window, Slash blinked with deja vu as he spied Duff and Nikki standing at the bottom of the building, smoking and talking together. This time though, it looked almost like they were arguing. Not heatedly, but Nikki had his arms crossed, a serious look on his face while Duff gestured vaguely and seemed to ramble on about something with wide eyes.
Slash narrowed his eyes. He hated when Duff got that look of anxiety on his face, and he didn’t appreciate Nikki putting it there. He took the stairs two at a time, and by the time he hopped off the fire escape, the two bassists had become aware of his presence. Nikki sighed, and Duff shot him an almost guilty look.
“Hey guys!” Slash smiled tensely, “I was wondering where you ran off to,” he said to Duff, weaving their fingers together.
“Oh, yeah, sorry,” Duff gave a nervous laugh, “just got caught up in conversation.”
“Bassist bonding, y’know?” Nikki grinned, taking a long drag of his cigarette as he eyed Slash with a look the guitarist couldn’t identify.
“Yeah, I’m still trying to convince Mick to join me and Izzy for ‘guitarist get-togethers.”
“Oh, I definitely need to see that,” the strange look disappeared as Nikki laughed.
Leaning heavier against Duff, Slash turned to him, “I’m pretty beat from the show. I was thinking maybe we could get out of here…?” he suggested with a sly smile.
Duff looked away quickly, “Oh, yeah, sure, I-”
“Aw, don’t leave so soon!” Nikki cut in loudly, giving them exaggerated puppy eyes, “You only just got here,” sauntering around them, put his arms around them both, ducking his head between them, “At least stay for a few drinks.”
It wasn’t a question, the dark haired man already guiding both of them back to the apartment, his hands firm on their shoulders. Slash sighed, but figured it wasn’t the end of the world. After all, he wasn’t exactly going to complain about free booze. So the three of them made their way to the kitchen, where a variety of bottles had accumulated on the countertops.
“Pick your poison!” Nikki offered cheerfully.
Duff eagerly snatched a bottle of vodka, not even bothering with a glass, instead taking a swig straight from the bottle while Nikki cheered. Slash laughed and reached for the whiskey, while Nikki quickly mixed himself a jack and coke. They drank and chatted, practically yelling to be heard over the ruckus in the apartment.
Before long, Tommy bounded over, clearly having helped himself to more cocaine since Slash last saw him. Coming up behind Nikki and wrapping his arms around him, “Heya babe! Having fun with the lovebirds?” he giggled.
Slash barked out a laugh, “You’re calling us lovebirds?” he gestured at the other couple.
“Nikki, Slash said we shouldn’t get a snake,” Tommy pouted, ignoring Slash’s comment.
His boyfriend only raised an eyebrow, “Well duh, probably because we definitely shouldn’t get a snake.”
“But baaaaabe,” the drummer whined, “I want a pet!”
“I got a dog from a blacksmith once,” Duff blurted out, three sets of eyes snapping to him in confusion. He smirked slowly, “As soon as I got home he made a bolt for the door.”
While Slash and Tommy laughed in surprise, Nikki had unfortunately just taken a sip of his drink and proceeded to immediately snort it out his nose. Sputtering and coughing, his three friends howled with laughter as he glared and pulled himself together.
“God fucking dammit, Duff!”
“You get used to it,” Slash snickered, patting his back in faux sympathy as Nikki flipped him off.
Just then, two familiar blondes crawled into the apartment. Vince had love bites running from his neck down his chest, disappearing under the low neckline of his shirt, and Steven’s hair was even wilder than usual and as they got closer Slash could see his shirt was on backwards.
“What’s up, losers? Did you miss us?” Vince exclaimed, waltzing over to the group in the kitchen with Steven beside him.
“Not really,” Nikki responded sarcastically.
“You wound me,” Vince pouted, “Where’s the love? I was nothing but supportive when you fuckers finally banged.”
“You gave us shit for weeks!” Tommy cried.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Tommy,” Nikki rolled his eyes, “He still gives us shit.”
“We need new friends,” Sighing, Steven snaked his arm behind Vince’s back, too low for his hand to be anywhere but on the singer’s ass.
Slash fake gagged, “Oh God, I thought you both were bad individually, this is gonna be even worse.”
“At least get a room,” Duff mumbled into his vodka, looking away firmly.
Vince lit up, “That is an excellent idea,” he purred, Steven grinning as he was tugged further into the house.
As they disappeared into Vince’s room, Nikki shook his head fondly, “This is going to be interesting.”
“Yup,” Slash looked over at his own boyfriend, who was steadily draining the bottle in his hand, “Although, on the subject of getting a room-”
“There you fuckers are!”
Axl strutted into the room, Izzy close behind him, “Did you see Steven and Vince go by? I can’t believe this! I wanted to see Vince get punched and instead I have to watch them get all handsy with each other! It’s a fucking outrage!” he ranted.
“Unfortunately, love won this round,” Izzy deadpanned, smoking a cigarette lazily.
Huffing, the red-head crossed his arms petulantly. Nikki shook his head before changing the subject, “So, you guys have any more shows coming up?”
Perking up, Axl started talking about GnR’s upcoming gigs, Nikki and Tommy nodding along and commenting on the various venues. Meanwhile, Izzy turned to Slash.
“Speaking of, we should try to finish a couple of our new songs for the next show.”
“Oh yeah?” Slash nodded, “That’s not a bad idea. Any in particular you wanted to work on first?”
The two guitarists discussed which of their half-completed songs to work on first. Their conversation slowly shifted until they were discussing their favorite guitar riffs, from their own songs and from other bands.
“You guys should grab Mick,” Nikki suddenly chimed in, “I still want to see a ‘guitarist get-together’.”
“Oh my gosh, I’ll take pictures!” Tommy laughed.
“I wouldn’t mind,” Izzy shrugged, “Mick’s cool.”
“You’re only saying that because you don’t get scolded by him on a daily basis.”
“I mean… yeah.”
Looking around the circle, Slash frowned. He glanced over his shoulders, but the four of them were the only ones in the kitchen, “Where’d Duff and Axl go?”
The terror twins shrugged, “I dunno,” Tommy answered unhelpfully.
Sighing, Slash took another swig of whiskey, “I’m gonna go find ‘em.”
But before he could exit the kitchen, Izzy threw his arm around his shoulders, dragging him back to the circle, “Oh come on, they’ll be fine for a few minutes,” he argued nonchalantly, “let’s at least get back to figuring out which songs we want to work on next.”
Frowning, Slash wanted to say no. He just wanted to hang out with his boyfriend- (and oh boy did that thought make him giddy every time he thought it- Duff was his boyfriend)- but he figured Izzy wasn’t being unreasonable, so he nodded along. The discussion went longer than Slash expected- every time he thought they came to an agreement, Izzy would suddenly change his mind, or Tommy or Nikki would interrupt with a note, or comment, or line of coke.
Eventually though, when the whiskey bottle was nearly empty and he’d done two more lines, Slash insisted on finding Duff. He weaved his way out of the kitchen, the alcohol making him a bit unsteady. Luckily, the tall blonde was easy to find. He was sitting on the couch, Vodka still in hand (it looked more full than it had been before- was that a new bottle?) and Axl sitting beside him, the singer facing him as he gestured wildly, clearly ranting about something or other.
Duff brows were slightly furrowed, like he was confused, and Slash couldn’t help but smile fondly. He was familiar with the way Axl could sometimes just talk and talk, and it was almost cute seeing Duff try to comprehend whatever passionate speech he was caught up in.
He wasted no time making his way over, sitting on the arm of the couch to lean over Duff and place a kiss on the crown of his head, giggling as the bassist jumped, “Hey babe,” he sang, “I missed you!”
Across from him, Axl huffed, narrowing his eyes at having been interrupted, “Um, rude? We were clearly talking.”
Slash glared right back, resting his chin on Duff’s head and letting his arms drape over his shoulders, “Hey, he’s my boyfriend, so I get to call dibs.”
Before the red-head could argue, they were both cut off as their blonde drummer reappeared, face flushed and smiling contently, “Hey guys!" he drawled, "I am having the best night. You would not believe the things Vince can do with his tongue-”
“No no no!” Slash cried frantically reeling back and slapping his hands over his ears, “lalalalala I can’t hear you!”
“Oh come on!” Steven laughed, “We’ve described good fucks to each other before!”
“Yeah, but this is Vince,” Slash insisted with a shudder, “This is someone I have to look in the eye on a regular basis! Please, as your best friend, I am begging you to spare me the details just this once.”
The drummer sighed dramatically, “Oh, fine. But only because I fucking love you.”
“Thank you.”
“What about you, Tommy? Can you handle the dirty details? Cause I seriously need to get this out before I’m ready for round three.”
“Wait, what?” Slash snapped his head to the side, nearly losing his balance as he blinked drunkenly. The blonde bassist had been replaced by the Motley Crue drummer. Axl sat beside him, pointedly avoiding the guitarist’s gaze, although he couldn’t quite hide a cocky smirk.
Tommy shrugged, “Honestly, I’ve walked in on Vince enough that nothing can scar me anymore. Spill.”
Growling in frustration, Slash lurched to his feet, Steven swiftly taking his seat as he began to wax poetic about Vince’s bedroom skills. Stumbling away, Slash didn’t understand what was happening. Because something was happening. There was no other explanation for how Duff kept being swept away from him every time he turned his head. He didn’t even care about going home anymore- he just wanted to spend time with his boyfriend. It would be enough to just stand next to him and hold his hand for more than two minutes, maybe press a few kisses into his skin. He’d waited so long to get to this point. He just wanted to savor it.
Pressing through the crowd of people, he found Duff in a corner, leaning heavily against the wall with an empty vodka bottle held loosely at his side. Nikki was next to him, smoking a cigarette while Izzy stood in front of them and spoke quietly.
“Duff!” Slash cried excitedly. The three boys turned to look at him, Duff attempting to stand up straighter but only managing to pitch forward. Luckily, Izzy and Nikki quickly steadied him, Slash hurrying over and slinging the bassist’s arm over his shoulder to hold him up.
“H-hey, Slash,” Duff smiled, his eyes slightly glassy from the alcohol. He pressed himself closer to him, burying his face in messy curls with a sigh.
Despite his previous frustration, Slash couldn’t help but smile, bringing his free hand up to play with the ribbon around his neck, “Hey,” he drawled, “I keep losing you. Or, you keep getting stolen,” he raised an eyebrow at the two rockers in front of him. They both stared back evenly.
But Duff shuddered in his arms, reaching to clench his fingers in the front of Slash’s shirt, “‘m sorry,” he whispered into his hair.
He almost missed the way Izzy and Nikki’s eyes seemed to darken, but he didn’t have the energy to think about it, instead focusing on pulling Duff closer, “It’s fine, you’re fine, ‘m just messing,” he soothed.
There was a nod against the top of his head, and the blonde seemed to sink a little further against him. Behind his back, Slash heard a soft thud, turning his head to see that the empty bottle had slipped from Duff’s fingers. Rubbing his back softly, Slash decided that this time, it really was time to go.
“I think you and I are gonna head home now,” he declared, “I’m half wasted and you’re half past wasted.”
Duff laughed lightly, nodding in agreement, “Yeah, kay.”
“Thanks for the booze and shit,” Slash nodded at Nikki, turning and giving Izzy a quick wave, “I’ll see you guys at home.”
He barely processed their responses, if there were any, too busy keeping himself and the tall blonde upright as they left the apartment. The fire escape was a challenge, but both of them were laughing by the time they finally reached the bottom. Normally the walk between their apartment and Motley Crue’s wasn’t too long, but with both of them weaving and tripping over their own feet, the journey took twice as long.
Slash didn’t mind though. He welcomed any time spent with Duff- always had, but even more so now. Whenever Duff stumbled against him, he couldn’t resist pressing his lips to the side of his neck, feeling the bassist sigh against him as he mouthed at his collar bone. When they finally reached the Hell House, Slash ignored his keys in favor of gently pushing Duff against the door to press their lips together, kissing lazily and stroking his hand against the small of his back while Duff tangled his fingers in his hair.
Eventually, the chill of the night motivated them to pull away and unlock the door, making their way inside. They giggled as they fumbled in the dark towards their room. Slash didn’t bother turning the lights on, and after the briefest flash of hesitation, guided both of them towards his own bed.
What a strange day, Slash thought to himself. It had gone so fast but felt so long, and even though the two of them had shared a bed the night before, tonight was different. Because, despite all of his doubts and shyness, Slash and Duff were together now. He wondered if the giddiness would ever die down.
As he maneuvered Duff onto the bed though, he couldn’t ignore the way the bassist fell back onto the mattress like dead weight, limbs sprawled out and eyes fluttering open and closed, and Slash still tasted vodka on his lips.
So, smiling softly, he crawled on the bed and gently laid his body on top of Duff’s, resting his head against his chest and sighing contently.
“Mmmm… Slash?” Duff muttered, turning his head to try to look at the guitarist, “I-... ‘re you…”
Slash hushed him, wrapping his arms around his waist and rolling them onto their sides, tucking his head beneath Duff’s chin, “Long day,” he slurred with a smile, “Let’s just sleep now. I’ll take you on a date tomorrow,” he promised.
“...Oh,” Duff let out a breath, “Okay,” he laughed a little, bringing a hand up to smooth back Slash’s wild curls.
Pressing one last kiss to the bassist’s shoulder, Slash held Duff tighter, smiling even as the whiskey pulled him towards sleep.
He drifted off with Duff’s steady heartbeat under his ear.
By now Adrienne had perfected this routine, putting up just enough of a front to hide the nervous jitters fluttering around in her stomach and the small wave of dread that made itself at home in her heart each time she met with a new music exec. Of course, the butterflies disappeared once she got comfortable but the initial fear always made her want to run in the opposite direction. It had been an extremely hectic fours months since she moved to Korea and Adrienne doubted if she was going to feel settled anytime soon. Between moving into a new apartment, her packed schedule of Korean lessons set up by her new company and the struggles of adapting to an entirely new culture, Adrienne didn't know whether she was coming or going. The worst part of it all was that she hadn't even started working on music yet and that was the sole reason for her being here.
To be fair, she understood that the need for her to learn the language took priority at the moment since she couldn't bring a translator with her everywhere she went. That knowledge didn't make the actual learning process any easier but at least she understood why she was learning how to  count again instead of making music like she wanted to. Today's meeting, hopefully, would change that since she was supposed to be meeting the group she'd be working with over the next few months. Starting from her first week in Korea Adrienne had been meeting with the founder of her new place of employment, Bang Si-Hyuk, and although communicating with him and other members of the staff was difficult at first Adrienne honestly felt like she made the right decision in coming to work for them. Currently, her Korean was nowhere near the level she wanted it to be in order to feel comfortable speaking but at the very least she was able to communicate and understand simple sentences.
Hopefully everyone she met spoke really really slowly.
The petite brunette clutched the notebooks filled with music and lyrics in her arms closer to her chest as she lingered in a small room she wasn't familiar with, she was given a tour of the BigHit building when she visited the first time but this particular room with different kinds of trinkets and toys placed all about was definitely not a stop on that tour. Korea was a far cry from her hometown; common, similar and friendly people and places being replaced with the sharp, unfamiliar and often aloof scenery of the far east. It was…jarring to say the least when she’d first arrived in the city but after being here for a few months Adrienne was certain she would get used to it, eventually.
The sensation of her phone buzzing in her pocket made Adrienne jump and drop the notebooks she was clutching to her chest.
"Yeoboseyo!" Adrienne answered in an overly cheery voice.
"Andy?"
The sound of her sister's voice made Adrienne sigh in relief as she bent down to begin picking up the books she dropped.
"You've only been there for a couple months, have you already stopped speaking English?"
"Shut up, my tutor says that I should speak in Korean whenever I have the chance so I can get used to talking."
"Oh, that makes sense. Have you gotten any better since the last time we spoke?"
"I think it does too, and do you mean last week? No, I don't think I've gotten better since last week" Adrienne chortled and shuffled around the pages that fell out of her notebooks "I mean I understand the basics of pronunciation but it's the vocab and remembering how to structure my sentences that's really tripping me up."
"Right, right. Well just keep it up I know you'll get it soon."
"Thanks sis, did you just call to check up on my progress? I know this call is expensive for you."
"No, that's not all I wanted to hear how your meeting went! Were they nice to you? I don't need to fly over there and kick anyone's ass right?"
Adrienne giggled and shook her head even though Danielle couldn't see her "You know it's only a little after two o'clock here right? I haven't met anyone yet. I'm actually sitting on the floor in the middle of a computer room or something. I have no idea when they're going to show up."
***
Yoongi was tired.
Actually, tired may not have been an accurate description for what he was feeling at the moment; exhausted, drained, depleted were all good words but still weren't quite enough to cover it. He had been up and on the road before the sun had risen that morning and his day was showing no signs of ending or slowing down anytime soon. The day started off with a fansign event in an area nearly three hours from their dorm which meant they had to get an early start if they were going to do the fansign and make it back to Seoul for the interviews they had lined up to begin promoting their upcoming album which they hadn't even started preparing yet. When his boss informed him that they were contracting an outside producer to co-produce their next body of work Yoongi assumed he meant someone from Korea, not an unknown person from a country Yoongi had never heard of, which meant that they'd have to teach them their language before they even began working together. He hoped that all the effort and expense the company was exerting was worth it for this one person, but being the slightly pessimistic person he was Yoongi highly doubted it.
He was only partially asleep when they pulled up to the BigHit building, he would never be able to restfully nap with all the noise Taehyung, Jimin and Jungkook made during their commutes. When they pulled up to the entrance Yoongi was jarred awake, accidentally, by a paper ball that was meant to hit Jimin, who was sitting next to him.
"Who's throwing things?" Yoongi groaned and sat up, the sour look on his face making it obvious just how annoyed he was. Taehyung's eyes widened when he caught notice of this and he immediately turned around and faced forward.
"You have to get up anyway Yoongi-hyung" Namjoon spoke up from the front seat of the van "We only have a few minutes before our next interview so you have to talk to the new producer now."
Yoongi huffed but got up and quickly exited the van, well as quickly as he could move, he was not looking forward to this at all and that was apparent in his movements. The last thing he wanted to be doing was babysitting someone for the rest of the day on top of the photo shoots and interviews he and the rest of BTS had scheduled, he did enough babysitting with his group members. Unfortunately, the plans for the day were not up for Yoongi to decide so he found himself wandering through the halls of the BigHit building until he stopped in front of the room he, Namjoon and Hoseok spent the majority of their time in when they weren't practicing or on the road. As his hand moved to twist the doorknob he paused and leaned an ear against the frosted glass. He could hear a muffled voice inside that sounded very female and very foreign.
It took him a few seconds to form a gameplan, on the one hand, there was the possibility that the voice could belong to a sasaeng who managed to sneak past security and he'd be risking his safety to go in alone. There was also the possibility that the voice belonged to his new co-producer but that seemed less likely, surely his boss would have mentioned the person he would be working was female at least once. Yoongi realised he was wasting time he didn't have to spare just standing around doing nothing so against his better judgement he twisted the doorknob and walked through.
The sight he was met with made him stop in his tracks and raise a confused eyebrow skyward; someone he didn't know was sitting on the floor surrounded by pages of sheet music while singing into a cellphone in a language he didn't understand but he guessed to be English.
"Uh-Can I help you?"
The woman's head whipped around and green eyes scanned over his face before meeting his own and Yoongi became frozen in place.
***
“Can I help you?” The sound of a male voice pulled Adrienne from her acapella and made her head snap to the direction it came from, her eyes bouncing all over the boy's features. It took her a second to recognise the face but once she did Adrienne smiled and moved to stand up.
"Dani, I'll call you back" Adrienne whispered into the receiver before disconnecting her phone call and putting her cell phone into her pocket. "You're Suga, right? It's nice to finally meet you! I'm Adrienne" She spoke slowly and carefully even she had this introduction practically memorised by now, all she needed to do was insert someone's name.
Yoongi was still standing in his place near the front door while Adrienne introduced herself, it wasn't until she bowed and moved closer that he remembered they were on borrowed time and he didn't have the luxury of gawking.
"Yeah, I'm Suga" He croaked then cleared his throat "What did you say your name was?"
"Adrie- Call me Andy if that's easier. Um, I'm the co-producer? We were supposed to meet today?"
"Seriously?" Yoongi blurted out.
"Yes, I guess no one told you I was a woman....or black." Adrienne chuckled nervously.
"Oh, n-no that's not," Yoongi exhaled and opened his mouth to speak again before his phone began buzzing; it was a message from Namjoon asking what was taking so long. "We have to go now," He said to Adrienne as he gestured toward the door.
"Go? I thought...what about the music?" She asked and gestured toward her notebooks.
"No time," Yoongi answered in halted English "We talk on way."
On the way to where? Adrienne wanted to ask but considering the fact that her partner was already halfway out the door she knew she wouldn't have to time to question everything. So she quickly scooped up her notebooks off the floor and scurried after him before she lost his trail. He was quiet as he led them back out to the van where everyone else was waiting and they made sure to let Yoongi know that they had been waiting for him by berating him loudly and incessantly when the van door slid open. That is until they caught sight of the small girl trailing behind him and the complaints slowed to a halt while their attention focused in on Adrienne as she climbed into the van after Yoongi did and took the empty seat next to his since she assumed that what she was supposed to do.
"Hello," she waved and spoke softly from the back of the van. The driver began to pull off but everyone's eyes were still trained on her, "I'm Andy, the new producer?"
"Oooh," they all sighed collectively and nodded in acknowledgment.
"Your hair is pretty" Adrienne heard the boy with a deep voice compliment her from the middle row and she smiled timidly as the two boys on the side of him playfully punched his shoulders and chastised him.
"Thank you" She answered through her chuckles as she twirled one of her braids around her fingers. "I'm really excited to start working with all of you," Adrienne spoke up again as she felt Yoongi grumble and sink down into the seat, his beanie being pulled down over his face in a way that signified he had no desire to talk at that moment.
Which was fine by Adrienne, she wanted to get to know the people she would be making music for anyway. Something told her she was going to enjoy that process more than anything else.
Training Montage
Next part of @kruk-art’s Awan Cormac fic.
Heavy Chargestep in the Ranger’s training room.
 Anathema in here too.
Mild spoilery stuff
Enjoy!!
___________________________________
You gasp for breath, lying motionless on the ground. That actually hurt.
“I DID IT!!!!” Anathema cheers loudly. “I really did it!”
“Of course you did” you grin weakly “Ouch”
“Darn are you ok?” he says turning to you
“Yeah, I'm ok, don’t worry. That’s why we’re using a matt”
Anathema extends a hand to you, smiling broadly. You get up only to get hugged
“Thanks!” he says
“Anytime” you chuckle. It’s weird but you never feel uncomfortable when he’s around. There’s something in his mind that inspires safety. That should make him dangerous in your book but it’s actually the other way around. Or perhaps you just enjoy taking a break from being suspicious of everyone and everything.
“I need to take a break,” he says heading for the large couch by the pool.
“Oh you’re the one tired?” you say smiling.
“Well, it was me doing all the job! I was the one learning the throw, remember? All you had to do was fall flat on your ass”
“Fair point” you laugh taking a water bottle from the fridge.
You always loved training, but you’ve never done this with an actual friend. The closest was learning with Nathaniel but he never really saw you as an equal. There’s something intoxicating about it.
“What are you two up to?” a voice comes from the elevator. Ortega, wearing no shirt -because Ortega-, training shorts and a towel on his neck.
“He just taught me the throw he did on Psycopathor!” Anathema answers excitedly.
“Oh, he did…?”
“Yeap. I can throw anyone now. I don’t even need superpowers anymore.”
“That’s not fair!” he says turning to you, and stepping into the combat training matts the two of you assembled
“What do you think you’re doing?” you ask
“I want to learn that throw too. You know, for super-heroic purposes. Also, lots of people who need to be tossed around. ”
“You already have enhanced speed and strength. And you can fry opponents who get too close. Why even train martial arts?”
“There’s always someone stronger or faster than you. Just want to be ready, isn’t that why we train?”
“It is” you concede
“So teach me” he grins confidently, facing you.
“I don’t know... It’s getting late“ you say, though there’s no one else for you to be right now. Still, you start walking away.
“Oh, I understand… I mean, I get it, if you’re not confident in your combat skill enough to teach me just because I'm stronger or faster than you then you don’t need to....”
You turn to face him again, your lips moving before your brain has time to process.
“Who said I'm not confident in my combat skill?!
“Well, I don’t know… You’ve been training with Anathema a lot, but you always leave when I come down here.  Sounds like you’re avoiding something. But it’s ok, you’re sort of good with martial arts,  and it’s probably easier to train with someone with your same build, losing’s not fun after all”
“Sort of good? Losing?” You say, venom dripping from your lips “You know what?  Maybe I can teach you that throw right now.”
“Maybe I can teach you a thing or two as well!” he says, the smile still stuck to his lips. It’s infuriating.
“I doubt it. Also, I have terms. If I do this, I get to use this training room whenever I want. And I get free energy drinks from the fridge. And Steel doesn’t get to kick me out”
He flinches before smiling again.
“You know the fight with Steel I'll have about that?”
“Take it or leave it!”
“Fine, you’ve got a deal. But my Mom’s home meals in that fridge, are off bounds, you monster!”
“We’ll see about that,” you say as you motion for him to come closer. “Let’s go. Hit me”
“I won’t hold back”
“It’d be your funeral if you did” you grin.
“Someone’s confidence is high. Let’s see how that holds up!” he charges at you.
He’s fast. Really really fast, very strong, and you can’t read his mind. On the other hand, his posture is sloppy, the attack reckless and his movements careless.
You deflect him with an inner forearm block, immediately pulling his arm around with a circular motion as you move in, shoving your back against his chest as fast as you can, grab him by the shoulder, and then simply tip him over using his own impulse.
He looks completely confused as he lies down on the matt.
“Ow?” he asks tentatively.
“Hey, that wasn’t the Psycopathor throw!” Anathema points out.
“You’re right. That wasn’t Aikido. It was Krav Maga”
“… how many martial arts do you know?” Ortega asks as he takes your offered arm and stands up.
You’d rather not answer that one. He really has no idea. “Let’s try again!” you say with a mischievous grin.  “This time I'll show you the actual throw”
You gon on explain the move, letting him do it on you a few times slowly. Then Anathema joins in, and they both practice together for a while before he heads towards the treadmills.
You keep training with Ortega, and you’re surprised to find he’s a really fast learner, taking in the basic moves much faster than you expected.
Minutes go by faster turning to hours. Anathema’s comings and goings are your only time measurement in here. He comes back to do some weights, then boxing practice against the punching ball, finally heading to the pool. Steel shows up to do some treadmill too, staying only for a short while, observing you an Ortega with mild disapproval before heading back to the quarter’s area.
There’s something joyous about this that you can’t outright explain. It’s exhausting and you’re getting all manner of bruises by competing against Ortega’s mods (which he keeps apologizing for) but there’s nothing you’d rather be doing. Your mind starts to wander into the past, to the long training with Nathaniel and other instructors.
But this is infinitely different. Even if you liked the training, it was always about punishments or rewards. Beat enough of your peers and Nathaniel would arrange for you to get the violin lessons you wanted. Fall down on your ass enough time, and you’d be downgraded for weeks. Be the worst, and you’d be the automatic volunteer for every experiment they needed.
You really hated losing.
But there’s no punishment now. Training with him is its own reward. He looks so darn pleased when he gets a move right. Because you taught him. Because he actually likes you.
A really close friend. You’ve both saved each other’s lives more than once now.
You notice you’re losing focus as the training goes on. You can’t manage to time your breathing right, you’re getting clumsy and your stomach keeps tingling inexplicably. More worryingly, you don’t want it to stop.
By the time Anathema comes back from the pool and sits on the couch to watch some TV you’re both exhausted.
“One last round?” He asks panting
You just nod, too tired to speak. You walk to the center of the matt, and get ready, inviting him to try to attack you again, just like when you started.
He comes at you with a feint to the side which you see coming, forcing you to step back. He throws a few punches, much shorter and fast this time, not giving you a chance to close in the distance. You take your time, until you see a mistake on his posture, and move in to try to knock him off his feet…
… and then you’re lying on your back. It was so darn fast you couldn’t even see it. He did the Aikido throw on you.
He pins you down, holding your arms to the side as you struggle fruitlessly.
“HEY! ANNIE! I DID IT!”
“What?” Anathema asks without taking his gaze from the TV
“I fucking got him! Look!”
“Good on you Marshal,” Annie says dismissively.
“Noooooo you have to look!” he goes on, while you struggle fruitlessly under him. “I need a witness!”
Something’s definitely wrong, and you’re feeling weirded out by the second.
His hands holding your wrists apart, his bare chest against you, his legs against yours…  It’s not the first time you’ve been pinned down but you’ve never felt this. Something’s making your stomach tingle and you’re getting really scared.
You’re panicking, and your struggle becomes more desperate.
“Hey hey, don’t be a sore loser!” he says turning to you, his leg rubbing against your thigh...and then both of you freeze on the spot.
 You’re trapped. Trapped in a way you’ve never felt before. He’s shocked because he’s clearly seeing something in your own expression that he didn’t expect to see, and you realize too slow that you’re blushing intensely.
His grip softens and you feel yourself trembling, but you can’t bring yourself to try break free… he opens his mouth, about to say something…
“Hey, guys! Guys! Come see this mess right now, it’s all over the news! We might need to do something. There’s a new villain lose!”
“W...What?” Ortega asks distracted letting go.
You take the chance to quickly crawl from under him, your whole body still tingling for whatever reason.
 He turns to you but you quickly turn away, focusing on the TV screen. You have to look away.
You can’t let him see your face like this. You never want anyone to see you like this.
You hate whatever *this* is.
Under the Moonlight~ MrBeast imagine *explicit*
(Yes this is a repost but I finally came up with a title and so I decided to make a separate text post)
Request: Can you do a mrbeast fic where the reader goes to college a few hours away and comes to visit for the weekend and it’s all fluffy and maybe some smut at the end.
Absolutely! I hope you enjoy this imagine. WARNING: This imagine contain explicit content. Fair warning: this is my first time writing explicit content in forever. As always be free to leave feedback or requests :)
You were currently a student at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. You were originally from Greenville, North Carolina, where most of your family and your boyfriend Jimmy, aka MrBeast, lived. Many people did not know that you and Jimmy were in a relationship due to the fact that you really did not want all that attention on you and get potentially recognized at your campus. You had about 3 more months until you graduated with your degree in Business Management. After you finished college, you were going to move back home with Jimmy, and help him out with his channel.  It was currently friday and you had the next week off so you decided to go visit Jimmy and your family. You packed your bag for the week and got in your car and started your two hour drive.You stopped twice on the way, once to get gas and the other to get you some food from McDonald’s. When you arrived in North Carolina it was around 7:00 at night, and so you decided to go to Jimmy’s since your parents were already getting ready to go to bed. The thing was that Jimmy did not know that you were coming to town this week. You decide to text him real quick to see if he was at home or at the Warehouse.
You:  Hey babe, are you home right now?
Jimmy: Yeah babe, hanging out with the bois, why do you ask?
You: Just wanted to see if you weren’t filming so that I could facetime you later. I’m currently on the way to see some friends.
Jimmy: Okay baby, I love you, have fun and stay safe. Talk to you later tonight *kissy face emoji*
You: I love you too babe * Kissy face emoji*
Little did Jimmy know that you were actually on the way to surprise him. You pulled into his neighborhood and parked your car on the curb in front of Jimmy’s house but out of sight from his window so that he wouldn’t see your car. You got out and put on your backpack and began walking to the front door. You rang the doorbell and rocked back and forth on the balls of your feet as you waited for Jimmy to answer the door. You heard some light commotion and then the door opened revealing your handsome, shocked boyfriend. He opened the screen door and engulfed you in a hug.
“I thought you said that you were going to see some friends tonight?” Jimmy questioned still holding you in his arms.
“I am, I’m seeing the guys and my BOYfriend.” you said and pecked him on the cheek.
“By the way, I’m staying the whole week.” You said and you pulled away and was let inside the house since the weather outside was starting to get a little bad due to a thunderstorm that was supposed to roll through tonight. When you walked in, Chris, Chandler, and Garrett all were surprised to see you. You have known them since you were young and you haven’t been to visit in awhile due to an abundance of homework that was being bestowed upon you by your professors. They all got up and gave you a hug and invited you to play the game of Monopoly that they were currently playing. You teamed up with Jimmy and sat in his lap as you all played the game. You all talked about how college was going, graduation, when you were moving down, and ideas about upcoming videos. It was now about 9:30 and everyone began to leave because the storm was starting to roll in and it was getting late. Everyone said their goodbyes and then left to go to their own homes. You locked Jimmy’s front door that would soon be you guy’s front door. You loved this little house. It was perfect for you and Jimmy. While you were lost in your thoughts, Jimmy walked up behind you and began trailing little butterfly kisses down your neck and back up behind your ear.
“What are you thinking about baby?” Jimmy asked.
“Just us.” You said and leaned back into his kisses. His hands began traveling underneath your shirt and rested right on your hips. You turned around and kissed him softly on the lips and then he pulled away and his eyes were clouded with lust. He gently backed you up against the wall and kissed you a little bit more forcefully. He began dragging the kisses down your neck, marking you with hickeys every now and then. He then pulled your shirt over your head, leaving you standing there in just your bra and jeans. He began trailing the kisses down the center of your chest and then back up to your lips. He nudged your legs signalling you to jump. You jumped up, your legs wrapping around his waist as he placed his hands on your ass to keep you from falling. You could feel his erection pressed against your core and it turned you on even more. He carried you down the hallway and gently kicked open his bedroom door, shutting it behind him. He carried you over to the bed and laid you down with hi between your legs. He reached behind your back and his fingers clasped your bra clip. He looked at you for approval and you smiled and shook your head in approval. He unclasped your bra and your nipples instantly hardened from the cold draft from the room. You reached up and took Jimmy’s shirt off and ran your fingers down his chest and back up. Jimmy then began trailing his kisses down your neck, to your chest, around your boob, before trailing them down your abdomen. You let out little moans as he got closer to your core. He was right above the waistline of your jeans. He unbuttoned your jeans and slowly pulled them off your legs leaving you just in your lace underwear. He trailed his kisses back up your body to your lips. You entangled your fingers in his hair as you pulled his hips closer to you and began slowly grinding against hi. You could feel the vibrations of his moans on your lips. Your hands trailed from his hair down to his sweatpants. You began pulling them off but only got so far. Jimmy stood up and stripped off his sweatpants and walked over to his dresser drawer. He pulled out a condom and walked over and turned the light off. The only light that was now in the room was the light from the moonlight.
“God, you are so fucking beautiful.” Jimmy said stripping off his boxers and sliding on the condom. You blushed at his complement and opened up your legs. You pulled Jimmy down in between your legs and kissed him softly on the lips.
“Hurry up and make love to me Jimmy.” You said needily. Jimmy reached down and slowly pulled down your underwear. He slowly began to enter you to let you adjust until he was fully in. He placed his head in the crease of your neck and began kissing you neck. As you let out shaky moans as you adjusted to his size. He slowly began thrusting as you became adjusted and your head leaned back and you let out a shaky moan. He picked up the pace slightly but still at a slow pace. You began to slightly drag your nails up Jimmy’s back leaving faint scratch marks before your hands ended up buried in his hair. He removed his lips from your neck and kissed you softly and gently on the lips. His hands were gripping the bed sheets above your head as he continued his slow pace.
“I love you so much (y/n), god I love you so much.” He moaned out against your lips. You began to feel that your release was near and you knew Jimmy’s was too as he began speeding up his pace a little. Your moans came out more frequently and louder. You let out a loud moan and your grip on Jimmy’s hair got a little tighter as your orgasm hit you like a freight train. You felt Jimmy stop thrusting and moaned into your neck. You were panting as Jimmy pulled out. He pulled off his condom and threw it into the trash and went into the bathroom to grab a damp washcloth to clean you off. He came out with boxers on and an extra t-shirt of his for you to wear. He wiped you down and helped you put on the shirt and laid back in the bed. He pulled you close to his chest with his head resting in your neck.
“Tonight was awesome. I love you so much Jimmy.” You said as you played with his fingers. You were extremely tired and were currently fighting sleep.
“You were amazing baby. I love you more than you’ll ever know. Now rest up. I know you are extremely tired.” He said as he massaged your scalp and lowly began to lure you sleep. As you began drifting off to sleep, the last thing you remember hearing was,
“Goodnight (y/n), I love you.” Jimmy said and you both fell asleep in each others arms and the rain was in the background softly drumming against the window.
Baby - Ch. 14
Title: Baby Author: aliciameade Rating: *** M *** Pairing: Stephanie Smothers/Emily Nelson Summary:  That tearful kiss shared between Stephanie and Emily wasn't their first—and it certainly wasn't their last.
(Chapter 1)
(You can buy me a ko-fi if you want to!)
Tumblr media
“When is she supposed to get here?”
“Whenever she decides to show up...if she even remembers what day it is. What the hell are you wearing?”
Stephanie looks down at her choice of clothing: black jeans and a generic black hooded sweatshirt and black work boots. “It’s utilitarian.”
“‘Utilitarian’?”
“Yes,” Stephanie says as she finishes descending the stairs in Emily’s home and stuffs her gloves in her pocket. “These are low-shedding fabrics. But I bought everything cash from the thrift store so even if they do find a fiber, it will be a dead end.” She stops to tuck a small bag into Emily’s suitcase and then joins her in the kitchen to accept one of the two martinis Emily’s holding. “What shall we toast?”
There’s a knife on the counter and she eyes it for a moment. Emily was using it to carve their twists.
“I think we toast to freedom.” Emily’s dressed more normally, though there’s no three-piece suit today. She’s in navy slacks and a gray turtleneck and loafers—not heels. She’ll be traveling tonight and has dressed for stylish comfort.
“To freedom,” Stephanie says with a nod as they lift their glasses to drink. They finish the drinks in one go.
Emily is packed; a surreptitious selection of clothing that no one will ever notice absent from her closet packed in a new suitcase, also purchased in cash. She’ll be ducking out the back door at dusk, walking to the bus station, and taking the Greyhound into New York to catch a flight. Stephanie will be waiting at her home for his Friday sleepover when Sean drops off Nicky and Miles after the movie Emily sent them to, a plan to shield Nicky from the trauma of walking into his house and seeing his mother dead.
“I realize it’s a little late to ask this, but should I be concerned about how readily you planned to commit first-degree murder?” Emily asks as she lifts Stephanie’s empty glass from her hand.
Stephanie expects it to be refilled but instead, the glasses are immediately washed and returned to the freezer as if they’d never been used. “Just don’t cheat on me and you have nothing to worry about,” Stephanie says with a teasing tone.
Maybe I’m the one who should be worried, Stephanie hears flit through her head. She did come up with quite the plot to off Emily’s twin sister and has felt very little remorse about it. Faith is a waste of space from how Emily’s described her; a hopeless addict who’s nothing but a drain on the system and those who attempt to care for her out of obligation. It began with frustration that Emily wasn’t hers and hers alone and in a matter of minutes, her brain lept from, “How can we be together?” to “Faith has to die.” She knows it’s not normal.
As readily as Stephane had suggested it, Emily had agreed to it. Emily had no hesitations about the proposed murder of her own sister. Stephanie can still feel the multiple orgasms she’d been given immediately thereafter.
The memory makes her shiver and she steps around the island to meet Emily and pulls her down into a kiss.
She knows she shouldn’t be turned on right now; murder shouldn’t be sexy but this murder means she’s one very big step closer to her Happily Ever After with Emily. No more Faith, no more Sean; just Emily, Miles, and Nicky and a new life as a real family.
It feels like a honeymoon and it hasn’t even begun yet.
She’s reaching to unbutton Emily’s pants to take her right there and then in the kitchen one last time before they part for what could be weeks—they’ve been trying to make up for the upcoming separation for the past month—when there’s an irregular and impatient knock on the door.
“Showtime,” Emily says as she buttons her pants and kisses Stephanie soundly one more time. “I love you.”
The adrenaline that kicks in is unlike anything she’s ever felt. “I love you, too.”
She steps into the kitchen pantry to wait out of sight until Emily gives her the signal. She leaves the door ajar so she can still see and hear; her curiosity about Emily’s twin sister (and their plan) demands it.
She hears Emily’s footsteps fade into the click of the front door opening.
“Holy shit. We got a Rockefeller in the family!”
Stephanie’s almost startled; it sounds just like Emily if Emily had smoked two packs a day for half her life.
“You wish,” Emily’s smoother voice replies and there’s an extended silence until two pairs of footsteps, Emily’s clicking loafers and a heavy scuff of boots.
“You look like shit. You’re using again.”
Stephanie sees Emily pass the kitchen toward the living room and when she slows her pace, Stephanie jumps. Faith is a mirror image of Emily; she feels like she’s seeing double but the differences between them are evident. If Faith sounds like she’s smoked two packs a day she looks like she’s smoked three, on top of alcohol, heroin, meth and any other vice Stephanie can think of.
“You could stop trying to fix me. Save us both the disappointment.” Faith is dressed in ripped leggings, a tee with some kind of logo on it, and a military-style jacket. She flops onto the middle of Emily’s sprawling white couch and drapes her arms along the back of it like she owns the place. She’s grinning as she says the words, bad teeth and pasty skin.
Emily remains standing and though she appears relaxed, Stephanie can see the tension along the back of her neck. “If I wasn’t perpetually disappointed in you, what else would I do to fill my time?”
Faith smacks her gum and gestures at the room they’re in. “If I were you—and I practically am, right?—I’d be day-drinking and fucking my hot husband. Am I right? Did I nail it?”
Emily looks at the ground for a second and nods as she scratches her nose. “You got me.”
“Where is the hot piece of ass anyway, huh? At the bank getting my cash? Hope they give your kid a lollipop.”
Emily’s back straightens as she lifts her head; Stephanie knows she wants to tell Faith to never speak of Nicky again but that’s not the game they’re playing now. “And then they’re picking up pizza for dinner. Ham and pineapple still your favorite?”
“You fucking know it.” Faith pats her stomach and then her hand slides down until it clutches rudely between her legs. “Wanna trade places when he gets home? I haven’t had a good fuck in weeks.”
Stephanie has to bite the inside of her cheek at the crassness and the irony.
Faith has no idea that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Minus the sleeping with Sean part.
“Maybe next time. I’ll get you a drink. What do you want? Water? Apple juice?” Emily’s walking toward the kitchen and makes eye contact with Stephanie. She seems calm as she moves on and Stephanie hears glassware clinking on the countertop.
“Fuck you,” Faith says with a snort and a hoarse laugh. “I know you got a full bar. Gimme a whiskey. You got whiskey, don’t you?”
“I have whiskey.” The sound of a cork popping out of a glass bottle follows and then Emily passes the cracked door again, a tumbler of amber liquid in her hand which she hands to Faith. Then she sits down next to her, on the far side of the couch to force Faith to turn toward her and away from the kitchen (and Stephanie).
“Your support of my sobriety is outstanding,” Faith says before she drinks half of it.
Stephanie can tell it pains Emily; she knows Emily did support her numerous attempts—self-imposed or otherwise—at sobriety and it can’t have been easy putting alcohol into her hand.
“It’s a special occasion, isn’t it?” Emily smiles at her sister. “Figured out what you’re going to do with the money yet? I’m dying to know.”
“Yeah, I’m gonna go to Iceland.”
Emily’s surprise is genuine. “Iceland?”
“Yeah, man. I’m gonna get fucking blasted and watch the Northern Lights.” Faith laughs as she says it and Stephanie can’t help but compare it to the laugh of the stoner burn-outs she remembers from high school. “Gonna be the best goddamn trip I’ve ever taken. Get it? Trip?”
The surprise fades to chagrin and Emily’s jaw sets firmly. “Good to know you have big plans for my money.”
“Yeah. I’m gonna go on, like, a world tour. Try the best smack every country has to offer. Gotta get over to Afghanistan and try that shit right from the source.”
Faith shares her plan to travel the world to shoot up in the way one talks of a wine tour of Italy to sample the best of the regions. Tuscany Merlot, Piedmont Moscato, Lombardy Chardonnay, Afghan opium. Stephanie can see on Emily’s face that she still wishes she could do something to help her. She’s disappointed in her sister’s weakness. Maybe she’s disappointed in her own failure to save her.
The disappointment leaves Emily’s eyes, though, and Stephanie sees them grow cold.
“I tried to help you. So many times. And this is how you repay me? You’re going to take everything I have and shoot it up?”
“Oh, boo fucking hoo. Are you going to cry about it? I know you don’t want me around.”
“I always wanted you around. You’re the one who left me. You always leave. You take and you take and you take and then you leave. You’re a fucking plague.” Emily’s hand lifts; it’s on its way to her hair but it stops at the neck of her shirt and she tugs on it.
The signal.
Adrenaline kicks in again. She’s run through this innumerable times in her head. She and Emily even rehearsed it so Stephanie would know how it would feel.
She puts on her gloves and her fingers tighten around the thin nylon rope in her hand.
Their final rehearsal this week had led to Stephanie taking Emily roughly from behind, rope around her neck just tight enough to be on the side of pleasure, not pain.
She pushes that sinful memory away; she has to execute it for real now. There’s no room for error. All or nothing. Her heart pounds in her ears and her palms sweat inside her leather gloves as she creeps out of the pantry. Faith is oblivious to her presence or advance. Emily has her locked in an argument that keeps moving blame for things from one sister to the other. Stephanie doesn’t hear the words; it’s just a loud hum as she steps closer. One foot after the other, light steps so Faith doesn’t hear her approach. Their rehearsal taught them to make sure the shade was drawn over the window immediately behind Emily so there would be no reflection of Stephanie’s sneak attack.
The blue nylon rope hangs between her hands, looped around her palms, then her wrists so she has enough leverage. Emily does a good job of keeping Faith engaged and distracted; she gives away no clues that something is about to happen. Not once do her eyes flit toward Stephanie even as she comes to a stop behind Faith.
Her thumbs run over the twisted braiding of the fibers in her hands as she double-checks the length she’s given herself: not too short, not too long. She hesitates; she wants to give Emily a chance to say goodbye.
Emily senses her pause and cuts into Faith’s argument. “Thank you.”
It catches Faith off-guard. “Thank you? For what?”
“For giving me my new life.”
Stephanie can see tears in Emily’s eyes when she says it and it makes her act quickly. She has to or she’ll second-guess herself. She can’t hesitate again. Faith could turn and see her. She could lose her nerve. Everything they’ve planned could fall apart in an instant if she doesn’t—
A flick of her wrists, a foot pressing into the arm of the couch, a pull, another loop around the neck to cinch it and another pull.
It’s more difficult than practicing on Emily had been; Emily didn’t fight back. Stephanie didn’t strangle her.
Faith is not small and Stephanie is not big; her leverage against the couch is the only thing that keeps Faith from struggling enough to get to her feet; if she manages that, it will be over and they’ll have to take drastic, more violent measures to make sure she doesn’t escape.
Emily watches her do it. Watches her struggle as Stephanie’s arms burn from the strain as she tightens the rope another inch.
As the struggle starts to wane Emily moves closer. She rests her hands on Faith’s legs and presses to stop them from kicking. She shushes her. She whispers something about winning a canoe race and the gasping gurgle of her fight for oxygen abruptly stops with a crack of the hyoid bone with one final tug on the lead end of the rope.
Stephanie feels faint. The tunnel vision closes in and the floor seems to slip from under her feet and she’s sure she’s about to hit the floor (wherever it flew off to) when arms catch her.
“Steph, baby, breathe.”
Emily’s perfume acts like smelling salts and she gasps for her own much-needed oxygen. Her vision is still blurry but she can feel Emily holding her close, can feel the kisses she’s peppering on the top of her head. She manages to lift her chin and her oxygen is immediately cut off by Emily kissing her.
And kissing her.
And kissing her.
She kisses her until Stephanie wonders if they’re going to have sex while Faith’s dead body sits on the couch.
She cringes internally at how aroused she is and blames it on the adrenaline and not the murder itself, though the number of times she’s had to tell herself that such a thing isn’t a turn-on tells her that...maybe it is. And maybe it is for Emily, too.
“We need to move, baby,” Emily whispers against her lips and Stephanie knows time is of the essence.
They separate and Stephanie pretends not to notice Emily wiping tears off her cheeks as she turns away to grab the stack of her own clothes left waiting on the counter for this purpose.
“Get her boots. I’ll get her jacket and shirt,” Emily says as she tosses the clothes on the floor next to where Stephanie kneels to untie and yank off Faith’s heavy, worn-out boots and shove them in a waiting duffle bag. Unwashed socks go next followed by the jacket and tee Emily hands her. The leggings are last to go before they redress her in one of Emily’s blouses and pair of trousers.
Emily combs out Faith’s hair to tie it into one of her signature twists, one last effort to make her look less like Faith McLanden and more like Emily Nelson as Stephanie stuffs the rope into the bag with Faith’s clothes. She watches Emily secure Faith’s hair with a clip and then yank the large sapphire wedding ring off her finger to slip it onto Faith’s.
They’re banking on Sean’s grief that the subtle differences between them will go unnoticed. That he’ll refuse an autopsy when the cause of death is so obvious. That the medical examiner won’t conduct a full-body examination and toxicology which could lead to suspicion.
The hairstyle and designer clothes on Faith’s lifeless body do make her look more like Emily than when she’d arrived. It’s enough to spook Stephanie and she finishes her clean-up quickly. She needs to dump the evidence, get home and take a shower to ensure nothing of Faith remains on her, wait for Sean to drop off Nicky and Miles, and then wait for the inevitable phone call.
As far as Sean knows, Stephanie’s picking up the kids so Emily can have the house to herself. Another day of needing to “reset.” He’ll come home in a few hours to find his wife strangled in a seemingly random home invasion. They’ve already opened drawers and closets and cabinets and rifled through them haphazardly as though a burglar had been searching for loot. Most of the damage was done upstairs in the master bedroom, Emily’s jewelry collection having been ransacked. It’s all in a small drawstring bag sitting with Emily’s clothes in the bag waiting to leave with her for the bus station. The valuables will be sold here and there for Emily to live off of while she waits for Stephanie to join her.
They meet by the back door once everything is as it should be.
“So that’s it, then,” Stephanie says as she glances at Faith’s body. There still seems to be terror on her face and it’s haunting. “I’m a murderer. First-degree. And you’re my accomplice.”
“It was a crime of passion, baby. We had to do it to be together.”
For a split-second, Stephanie thinks there surely were dozens of different, legal ways they could have accomplished that but there was no going back now. “I’m going to miss you so much,” she says instead of what she was just thinking.
“Me, too, baby. Come here,” Emily says as she pulls Stephanie into an embrace. They stay that way for a moment and then share one final kiss before wordlessly agreeing it’s time to go. She’ll be sneaking through the hedge to walk to her car parked a few blocks away.
Stephanie takes one final glance at the house; she knows she’ll return to it. She’ll have to as she goes through the motions of mourning Emily’s untimely death.
She notices Emily doesn’t look back.
Back, in Black
Once more, we return, with two essays on The Wicked + The Divine #41. Tim’s will be following later today, but we kick off with Alex, talking the issue’s big character redesigns. You know the ones we mean.
If you don’t, well, spoilers follow after the cut.
Tumblr media
Alex: Look, you don’t need me to tell you that Jamie McKelvie is one of the most talented character and costume designers ever to bless comics. Just take one glance at a poster for the upcoming Captain Marvel, how much of his iconic redesign is making it onto the big screen, and all the gorgeous merch that’s already spinning out of that movie. Or the hundreds of essays written to that tune by us, and the rest of the Tumblr fandom, and basically anyone with working eyes in their head.
But I do want to celebrate, one last time before the end, how he can make a costume change into just as much of a gasp-at-the-page-turn reveal as any major plot point or twist. Issue #41 seems like a rather apt time to do that.
Let’s start with the quieter redesign moment of the issue: the artist formerly known as Baphomet, now going by Nergal.
That first two-thirds-of-a-page panel squeezed an involuntary noise out of me. By the standards of the Pantheon, it’s a fairly downbeat costume: no make-up or physics-defining hairdo, and not a single ab in sight (a failing that has already been registered by the Everything Wrong With WicDiv Tumblr). Just a black suit jacket and high-collared shirt, open at the neck, adorned only with a goat’s-head belt buckle.
As new looks go, this one is downright vampiric – our boy Cameron finally going, to borrow one of Baal’s lines, the full Nick Batcave.
Tumblr media
The elder statesman of goth is the clear model for this new look, right down to the open neck of the shirt and the slicked-back hair. Cave has always been in the mix of influences for Baphomet, but this is the first time he’s barged Andrew Eldritch out the way and made it right to the front. There’s a sense that, as Cameron has left behind the ‘Baphomet’ identity, he’s also ditched the hyper-masculine swagger of the old look. It was always just a front anyway – that’s what the trademark mirrored shades were about.
There’s even, in the baggy sleeves, a touch of foppishness – something that had no place in the old leather-chains-and-skulls costume. It reminds me of McKelvie’s first draft of Baphomet, glimpsed in that initial two-page ‘trailer’, the kind of guy you can see reading his poetry for you without having to coat it in ironic winks. It’s Cameron dropping the schtick.
That’s what flooded into my brain, conscious or otherwise, as I turned the page to meet the New Nergal. It’s why I squealed. All of that, squeezed into one image of a pale lad in a black suit.
Tumblr media
Of course, this isn’t the biggest costume reveal in issue #41. That honour goes to the panel that launched a thousand fanarts: the freshly recapitated Lucifer, Inanna and Mimir.
For my money, there’s not quite as much semiotics squeezed into these three – they’re basically darker takes on the original costumes, inflected with the gothiness of their donor bodies. It’s more specific than that: Luci’s red hair and immediate suggestion of violence are a sign that she got Badb’s body, the torn netting of Inanna’s vest is a clear link to Gentle Annie, while the raven wing motif of Mimir’s Tron-suit suggest Morrigan Prime.
(I attempted coining portmanteau nicknames for each – Gentle Inannie? Morrimir? Mimirigan? – but got stuck on Luci. The best I could come up with is Badb Bitch. Suggestions are very welcome.
Update: @meserach puts forward the remarkable ‘Badb out of Hell’.)
Tumblr media
There are certainly neat touches – finding a common ground between Lucifer and Morrigan’s symbols with the black feather around her neck – and there could potentially be some significance to Mimir switching his signature colour from the original blue to green: Morrigan’s colour but also, especially in the cybernetic neon piping, his father’s. But really, the signifiers of these three are same as it ever was: androgynous ass-kicker, sexually-inviting luxury, sci-fi form-meets-function.
The significance of the costume changes here isn’t so much to do with code-switching – the way we tweak how our identities are presented, depending on context. It’s more about selling this as a triumphant moment, the return of all our old favourites. McKelvie provides the exclamation point to this plot beat, the celebratory fireworks, the [DJ spams air horn sound effect].
There’s a lot of visual information packed into this not-quite-full-page-splash, down to the raven-shaped curls of smoke leaving these three bodies, and that encourages you to slow down and really drink it in. My eyes can sometimes jump automatically to the next cluster of words, skimming over the pictures in between, so this serves as a helpful reminder that, hey, dumb-dumb, this is a visual medium.
And yes, because McKelvie’s a genius this will be the wellspring of gorgeous fanart and unbelievable cosplay – less than a week from release, I’m sure someone’s already rocked the new Luci look – but this is what I appreciate most: the invitation to really study an image, squeeze out every last bit of meaning and beauty. Because hey, we only get twenty-some pages of them a month.
Be My Player 2? Ch. 39
Also in AO3!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hunk! Pidge!” Keith shouted as he turned the corner and found them at the other end of the hall. People glanced up as he sprinted past, giving him curious looks. “Hunk! Pidge!”
They paused and glanced over their shoulders, sharing a look at finding Keith chasing them down. He slowed as he approached, bracing his hands on his knees when he stopped to try and catch his breath.
“Finally,” he gasped.
“Keith? Is everything okay, buddy?” Hunk asked. “You’re not running from anyone are you? Because I’d rather not be the victim of a chase. Police or otherwise.”
He shook his head. “No. I’m not being chased by anyone. I just had to find you guys.”
“You could’ve texted us, you know,” Pidge scoffed. “There’s this great thing called a cellphone. Really helps with communication.”
“Pidge, I love you, but shut up,” Keith forced out, straightening and placing a hand on his side to try and ease the stitch that formed.
She rolled her eyes. “Yeah, yeah. Now tell us what you wanted. You’re not normally one to run across campus looking for someone.”
Keith pulled out his phone and unlocked it, the email still open where he’d read it.
“Here,” he said, handing over his phone.
Pidge and Hunk bent over the phone, confused looks morphing into understanding and glee.
“You did it!” Pidge said. “I knew you could!”
“Congrats man,” Hunk said, patting him on the shoulder.
“It’s just an interview,” he muttered, face heating up.
“Just an interview my ass,” Pidge scoffed. “It’s still an interview. And that’s what’s important. This is an awesome accomplishment. Don’t sell yourself short just because it’s not a job offer yet. Give me all the details.”
“I’m really excited and it’s over Skype. Obviously, since I can’t just fly down there yet. And, well, you read it, the offer is for an interview later next week.”
“And you’ve already sent them your acceptance of course,” Pidge said with a nod.
“Oh, wait yeah I need to do that,” Keith muttered. He hit the reply button and typed out his response.
“You’re kidding me, right?” Pidge cried, smacking him in the arm.
Keith jolted and looked up at her, shocked. “What?”
“I can’t believe you,” she admonished. “All that talk about wanting to get a job and move to Florida and you can’t even accept an interview for one within two minutes of getting the email.”
“It’s not like I’m going to lose the interview opportunity if I don’t respond right away. That’s not how it works,” Keith argued.
Pidge shook her head and crossed her arms. “I still think you should’ve accepted before even considering coming to find us.”
Keith stuck his tongue out of the side of his mouth, reading his reply once before he hit send. “Sorry, I guess,” he muttered, pocketing his phone. “I was just so shocked I didn’t know what to do. I still don’t know what to do.”
Hunk smiled. “Don’t worry, man. We can help you out with that. Like we told you before, you’re not going through this alone and we’ll help you every step of the way.”
“Thanks guys,” Keith murmured, warmth spreading through him.
“We’ll even help you figure out what to wear,” Pidge offered. “We all know you’re horrible unless it involves black.”
Keith rolled his eyes. “Shut up. And I’ve got Saturday morning off if you can make that work.”
Pidge punched him in the arm. “We’ll be there. No sweat.”
Keith smiled at them both. “Thanks. I mean it. Thank you.”
Hunk cooed and pulled him into a tight hug. “We’re happy for you, man. And like we’ve been saying, we’re going to help you land this job so you can be where you need to be.”
Keith swallowed, a lump forming in his throat at being faced with his friends’ blatant kindness and the possibility he might actually get what he wants.
~~
Keith shuffled through his apartment; mind set on getting into his bed as fast as possible. He wanted to sleep, but he knew Shiro would be calling him soon for their nightly chat and needed to stay awake just long enough to get a few words across.
And he was looking forward to breaking the news to Shiro that he had a job interview. He wasn’t going to tell him where it was yet, but he was going to tell him it was happening.
Keith toed off his shoes as soon as he was through his bedroom door and shoved his jeans down around his legs, kicking them in the general direction of the laundry pile. He unbuttoned his shirt and added that to the mound of discarded clothes.
He grabbed a clean pair of boxers and a large shirt and changed, falling into bed, and nearly asleep with how comfortable it was. He rolled onto his side, forcing his eyes open and reached for his bedside table, frowning when he didn’t find his phone.
Keith grumbled and forced his eyes open, finding the table empty. He sighed and pushed himself upright, wary to get back on his feet and retrieve his phone. He was in the middle of weighing the pros and cons of crawling when his ringtone went off in his pile of discarded clothes.
He jumped to his feet and rushed to his jeans, fumbling with the pockets until he managed to get his phone free. Shiro’s name flashed across the screen and Keith nearly dropped it trying to answer.
“Hello?” he asked, finally getting a hold on it.
“Hey baby,” Shiro greeted. “How was work?”
Keith relaxed, some of his stress and exhaustion washing off him. “Not too bad. A bit busy, but we weren’t swamped and got through it without too much trouble. How are things with you?”
“Been fighting to keep above water with my schoolwork. I feel like job applications have fallen to the backburner a little bit, which isn’t something I really want to let happen.”
“I get that, but that doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your schoolwork in favor of doing a bunch of applications. Save them for the weekends if you have to.”
Shiro sighed. “Yeah… Anyway, how are things going with you? Any job interviews lined up that you want to tell me about?”
Keith bit his lip, trying to keep the grin from pulling the corners of his lips upwards. “Well…”
“Wait, really?!” Shiro asked, nearly shouting.
Keith pulled the phone away form his ear and chuckled. “Yeah, really. I got an email today about an interview for next week.”
“Congrats, baby! I knew you could do it!”
Keith felt himself flush. “Thanks. I was getting a little stressed so it was nice to finally get some good news. I was worried I’d graduate before getting an interview.”
“I told you you didn’t have anything to worry about. You’re going to do great. What’s it for?”
“A research assistant position. It’ll give me the chance to do something with my degree at least.”
“I’m sure you’re going to have no problem landing it. You’re smart and amazing and there’s no way they won’t love you and want to hire you right away,” Shiro gushed.
“I don’t know about that,” Keith said, rolling onto his side. “But I’m hoping that I’ll get lucky and it’ll pan out. It’ll make getting through the rest of the year easier. Less stress.”
“You’ll get it,” Shiro said. “I know you will.”
Keith thought about all the time they got to spend together over Spring Break and how vivid he imagined their future to be. This was just one more step to getting closer to that future. As long as Shiro wanted it too.
“Thanks, Shiro. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“I think I should be the one saying that to you,” Shiro said, voice soft.
Keith pursed his lips, wanting more than anything to tell Shiro that he would be just fine without him. So many people were just fine without Keith. And Shiro would be just fine without him.
Keith, on the other hand. Keith needed Shiro like he needed oxygen to breathe. Shiro was the glue that held him together no matter how bad things got. He was becoming as important as the sun that rose in the east and gave life to the Earth. He was incredible and different and beautiful like the stars and galaxies that dotted the universe and shined bright in even the darkest of corners.
“Keith?” Shiro asked. “You there?”
“Yeah, I’m here. Sorry, just got caught up in my own head for a bit.”
“Nothing bad, I hope. If you need to talk about it, I’m all ears,” Shiro said, voice sincere and as meaningful as it always was when they were talking or if Keith had an anxiety attack.
“Nothing bad,” Keith confirmed, smiling up at the ceiling. “Just thinking about how much I love you,” he said, keeping his voice light.
Shiro chuckled. “I love you, too. Any other fun or exciting things going on that I should know about?”
“Not much. Pidge and Hunk are going to come over this weekend to help me pick out something for my interview…”
~~
Keith hurried to the door to his apartment when he heard the knocking. He’d been sitting in his room staring at his closet for an hour trying not to let the stress and anxiety of his upcoming interview overwhelm him.
He yanked open the door, not bothering to check through the peephole since there were only two people who’d reasonably be knocking at his door.
“Have no fear, the greatest duo is here,” Pidge said, walking past him towards his bedroom.
“Well I hope you’re the greatest fashion duo because I still have no idea what I’m going to wear,” Keith muttered, locking the door as Hunk followed Pidge through his apartment.
“Runway design, not so much,” Hunk said. “But interview attire? I think we’ve got your back.”
“You’ve got potential,” Pidge said, already elbows deep into his closet, sifting through his shirts and pants. “It helps that you needed nicer clothes for your job. But you’re definitely going to need more variety when you show up for work.”
“I’m not even guaranteed a job,” Keith huffed, plopping down on the edge of his bed next to Hunk. “It’s just an interview.”
“And it’ll only be an interview if you keep thinking like that,” Hunk said, clapping him on the shoulder. “You’ve got the skills to get the job. You can do it. You will do it.”
Keith pursed his lips, tired of arguing with them over this.
“How about this?” Pidge asked. She held out a dark grey shirt and a pair of beige chinos he couldn’t even remember buying.
“Looks good as a preliminary option,” Hunk commented. “I think the real test is going to be having Keith try it on.”
“Do I have to?” he groaned.
“Yes,” Pidge said, tossing the clothes to him. “Not only should the colors match, but they should look good on you, too.”
“Fine, fine,” he huffed. He shuffled out of his bedroom and into the bathroom, hanging his clothes off the doorknob to keep them from getting rumpled on the floor. He switched shirts quickly, slipping his arms through the sleeves and doing up the buttons.
He pulled on the chinos and carefully tucked his shirt into them, making sure it was flat over his stomach and didn’t twist in any awkward way. He gave himself a onceover in the mirror, not finding anything too impressive.
He felt like he was trying too hard. Like a little kid trying on his dad’s clothes to try and seem like an adult when he really wasn’t one.
“Hurry up!” Pidge called. “Your adoring fans are waiting to see.”
Keith snorted and pulled open the door. “Don’t hurt yourself by calling yourself ‘adoring.’”
He stepped around the corner and waved at what he was wearing. “How does it look?”
Pidge nodded. “I approve. Hunk?”
“Nice color scheme, Pidge. Although…I think we should make sure that’s the best option available.”
“Agreed,” Pidge said with a solemn nod. She hopped up and returned to her search deep through Keith’s closet.
“Why can’t this one be good enough?” Keith scoffed.
“Do you want it to be good enough or do you want it to be the best?” Hunk asked.
“Keith, you don’t happen to own a tie, do you?” Pidge asked, voice muffled.
Keith sighed. He loved his friends to death and they were the literal greatest, but they could also be the worst.
~~
Keith rubbed his hands across his pants. His palms were sweaty and he was fighting to keep his fingers from trembling. The collar of his shirt felt like it was choking him and he wanted nothing more than to run away and hide instead of suffering through an insanely anxiety-inducing interview.
He’d woken up that morning with a supportive string of texts from Shiro and it reminded him of the many reasons he was doing this.
He glanced at the clock, watching as the numbers changed. He still had two minutes to go until the start of his interview. Assuming the panel was going to send the skype call right on time. He took a deep breath. It shook as he let it out. He could do this. He could do this and it was going to be great and he was going to get this job and move down to Florida to be with Shiro.
He had to believe it was possible. No matter what. He had to believe he could do it and that just might keep him from epically failing in an explosion of death and fire.
Keith jumped when the Skype ringtone broke the silence around him. He placed a hand over his heart, fighting to calm his heartbeat. He wiped his hands on his pants one more time, forcing a smile on his face as he hit accept.
The image formed, revealing three people sitting at a table in the middle of the room. Keith hid his hands in his laps, twisting them together as they shook.
“Good morning Keith,” one of the men greeted with a smile. “Can you hear us alright?”
“I’m hearing you loud and clear,” Keith said, clearing his throat which was suddenly dry. “How are all of you doing today?”
The panel grinned, each murmuring good things about their days.
“We’ll go around and introduce ourselves really quick and then we’ll get started,” the man continued. “How does that sound?”
“It sounds great,” Keith said, voice cracking at the end of his sentence. He fought down the blush that made its way up his cheeks and cleared his throat, listening intently to the names and titles of everyone sitting in on his interview.
“We have a set of questions we’re going to go around and ask you and then you’ll have a chance to ask us anything. I’ll go ahead and start,” Dave, the first man who’d spoken, explained. “Can you tell us a little bit about why you’re interested in this position and relocating to Florida?”
Keith took a deep breath and squared his shoulders, the thought of Shiro helping to calm him. He opened his mouth and started to speak.
~~
Keith sighed and collapsed back into his chair. He scrubbed his hands over his face as the last of his nerves and adrenaline wreaked havoc on his system. He didn’t feel like it was good enough. He didn’t think he was smart or charming or incredible enough to stand out against every other person they were no doubt interviewing. Most of them closer than Keith probably was.
They seemed to like him. But he knew that was no guarantee to their actual feelings about him and his qualifications.
Keith reached for his phone, pulling up his texts with Shiro.
Keith: Interview’s done
He waited, hoping Shiro’s answer wouldn’t be long before it came through. His phone started vibrating wildly in his hand, Shiro’s name and picture filling the screen.
Keith smiled and answered it.
“He-”
“How’d it go?” Shiro asked, grin evident in his voice. “I bet you did amazing!”
Keith chuckled and shrugged a shoulder. “It was okay. I kind of feel like I wasn’t good enough. Or I wasn’t what they were looking for.”
“I’m sure you did great! From what you told me about the position, you’re plenty qualified. You have the training at least and they certainly can’t expect you to know everything right off the bat.”
“Maybe…” Keith hedged. “They said they’d let me know next week if I made it to the next round of interviews.”
“You’ve got this. You’ll probably be the first person they call,” Shiro swore.
Keith chuckled, feeling warmth bloom in his chest and drive away some of his uncertainty. He wasn’t going to get his hopes up. He didn’t want to assume anything and then feel like shit if nothing came out of this.
“How about this,” Shiro continued, oblivious to the thoughts swirling around his head. “It’s been a while since we had a nice night together. I’m thinking we could use a date night. Forget about job applications and interviews, forget about all of the final projects and exams coming up and we can just enjoy being together and watch a movie or show or something.”
Keith shoved away the immediate desire to protest they didn’t have time for something like this and they needed to get as much done as they could while they had the time. His life was packed enough as it was. He didn’t need to overwork himself and stress. Besides, Shiro would bug him until he gave in anyway.
“That sounds amazing,” he agreed. “Does eight your time work?”
“That would be perfect,” Shiro murmured.
“Awesome. Now I can use all the time I have between now and then to get as much work done as I can.”
“Keith…” Shiro said, voice low.
He chuckled. “Don’t worry. I won’t work too hard. But I would like to get a few things done before classes and work tomorrow.”
“Good. Talk to you later?”
Keith nodded. “Yeah, definitely.”
“Later, baby. Love you.”
“Love you, too,” Keith said, voice soft.
Keith sighed and ended the call. He leaned his head back, his anxiety quiet for the moment.
