I've been doing some research into some animation history and recently, I just learned about the United Productions of America (UPA) and it's neat seeing their influence on cartoons we know today! (Example: Powerpuff Girls)

Here's a shot from Gerald McBoing-Boing!

They were pretty prominent in the 1950s and were the antithesis to Disney. (It's also important to note that they were founded as a result of animators' strikes against Disney too)

things i think about: if my dad was born in the 50's and grew up around UPA Style, and when I was a kid I watched a shitton of cartoons with UPA revival style cuz THOSE animators grew up off of UPA, and now I'm 31 and like. trying to do UPA-revival-revival. Does this stuff skip a generation? Is UPA style like, a thing that comes back around every 20-odd years or so?? Do people who grow up in different generational cohorts have a fondness for other cartoon aesthetics like CalArts style (not a real style name don't fight me please don't. i mean rounded shape language with thin lines and limited textures) or maybe like the 80s Transformer/He-Man stuff, and if the cohort of cartoonists/animators who grew up on that will revive THAT style when THEY animate stuff (I would argue the 80s revival stuff is already here)

Quip-Spider is my spidersona inspired by Harlequin of the commedia dell'arte and the Hawaiian happy-face spider (Theridion grallator). Her name is a pun based on Whip Spider, a type of arachnid, and 'quip' - a joke. She would be animated in the UPA Revival art style of early 2000's cartoons. She fights using synthetic explosive balls which she can inflate for a bigger explosion. She has a very chaotic fighting style and an irritating personality. She's also capable of distorting the space around her using her slapstick to match the style of her own world - a reference to Harlequin's slapstick being used to change the scenery of the play.
