Observe this rare trading card I got for $1.57!
We stan Jaster Mereel, Mandalore the Reformer on this blog. We also ignore great swathes of canon around here!
Tumblr media
Now! Even though Jaster is now only canon in Boba's chain code and listed as mentor, I wish to direct your attention to the back of this card.
Tumblr media
"He also raises an orphaned farmer's son, Jango Fett, as his own." AS. HIS. OWN.
I don't know what that means to you, but my dude, that reads as Jaster raised Jango as his own son. Jaster was his father.
So! Fanfic writers, while we all chose to write differently and all sorts of different plots, let others have their headcanons in peace. Educating people about actually harmful words is good.
But Jas'buir used to be canon and I'm sticking to it! Also most of us write Jaster a lot softer than he is in canon and yanno? I like it. I do enjoy giving him more ruthless moments though, usually against his enemies.
(Disclaimer: I hate the whitewashing and kriffed up faces in the Open Seasons comics. All Fetts are round-featured and darker skinned in my fics. I even got the Bad Batch their melanin back, since I was pressured into adding them to my fic.)
Top picture - A trading card of Jaster Mereel from Star Wars Legends in a plastic sleeve encased in a thicker protective plastic sleeve. It's got a picture of Jaster from the Open Seasons comic firing at someone in the field at the Fett Homestead where Death Watch had chased the True Mandalorians to. Cut out at the right edge is his left hand holding onto a terrified Jango's arm. You can barely see the arm and some hair. Captioned: Jaster Mereel, with Mandalorian underneath it.
Bottom picture - Jaster's stats, which are all really high except for Force Power. The bio reads (and I'm going to fix the mispellings tyvm)
"Born on the Outer Rim world of Concord Dawn, Jaster Mereel is a law enforcer who staunchly believes in justice and fair play. Accomplished as a soldier, he goes on to become the leader of all Mandalorian clans, reforming the volatile thieves into honorable mercenaries. Mereel is opposed by the splinter group Death Watch and its leader Tor Vizsla. He also raises an orphaned farmer's son, Jango Fett, as his own. In 52 BBY, Jaster Mereel is betrayed by second-in-command Montross and slain by rival Vizsla."

WARNING, NEW CONTENT ALERT!!
You're about to get a bunch of Destiny and Starcraft on this blog, cause I'm reblogging all my stuff to delete two of my side blogs. I haven't played Starcraft in ages, kriff Blizzard, but I enjoy the art n chaos so much.
Don't worry, I'm keeping Bucket Tooka for Star Wars stuff.
Answers for questions only my (currently) unmedicated anxiety has produced:
1. I don't like/watch The Bad Batch because the main characters remind me of past abusers/bullies. I acknowledge their growth, but still not interested. Especially when they still don't look like Mr. Morrison.
2. I'm gonna try and watch Andor again, because despite not enjoying Cassian as a character until halfway through Rogue One, there's other things to see in the show. Plus watching the Empire get annoyed is glorious.
3. I'm Mormon, I cuss mildly and write smut, we're not a cult (yes, even according to the BITE model). Some members of *any* religion can be so zealous to be cult like. If you don't like, block me. If you have genuine questions, I can answer.
4. I need multiple reminders to reply to tags as I'm busy recovering from cancer and changing anxiety/depression meds, so my memory is shit right now. I also have chronic fatigue and ADHD and much stress, but that's more in the background.
5. I need fanfic editors who will actually shred, there's no way I write good enough for only a few superficial changes. Mostly writing Star Wars right now, DM me for my WIP list. I stubbornly support my editor, who is super busy with real life. Doesn't fix my (irrational) sense of hopelessness. Why write if never edited?
6. Never give up on finding a medical reason for your ailment!
Anyhoo, word vomit done, I'll blep a meme here at the end

As we get closer to the premiere of The Bad Batch, I would just like to publicly state that I in no way support the abhorrent white washing of the clones and Rau is a POS :)
Any and all of my writing of the Batch, or any being from the Fett strand for that matter in my fanfictions, will never submit to their onscreen depictions.
Tem is a brown indigenous man. The Fetts are brown and indigenous. Anything less than this standard is racist. Point blank.

On December 4th, we are one month away from The Bad Batch season 2 premiering.
And I just want to make it clear that I don't want to see anybody who didn't say squat about Rex's remaining whitewashing and eurocentric features in Tales of the Jedi, suddenly going up in flames about the whitewashing of The Bad Batch.
If you call out and fight against something as important as racism, you do it all the time. You don't only do it when it's about a character you like, and you certainly don't get to turn a blind eye to it when its your favorite character on screen.

Few things will ever be as cynical as season 2 of the Bad Batch.
The 1 season of this series by Disney managed to launch its own media movement under #unwhitewashthebadbatch due to being so full of racism, colonialism and imperialist codes.
And then they turn around without doing much about the racist designs and have their characters try to talk about how bad colonialism and exploitation is?
Spare me.

I wasn't going into the new season of Bad Batch with much hope or expectations. Like none at all, bottom fucking level it's gonna be bad. And yet.. it was worse. It went lower. They're still white washed, Wanda Sykes (I think her character's name was Fey - a pirate) even comments they don't look like clones, another "defective" jab, it's still very much ableist and antisemitic... just overall "blah". Everything just seems forced from interactions to idle dialogue to combat.
Just overall not good.

Also it's really getting on my nerves because you can tell they changed their animation style.
Yes they redesigned the armors but from the gifs and screenshots i saw you can tell that the faces of the characters have softer lines and edges.
There was a screen of Tech and another man idk who and the man had a long nose with soft round shapes and a strong jaw but again the lines were softened and a bit rounded to give it more of a "realistic animation" feel.
And even on Tech's face they softened the lines a little it seems. But they did not change the skin colour. They did not change the strong jaw and thin nose and straight hair.
This is not "listening to the fans". This is not respectful, nor is it less racist. It's just them saying "yeah we can change our animation style... doesn't mean we will though."

Hey! It's been a while! Been busy recovering from chemo, so the brain has struggled to brain for months, especially after getting round 2 of Covid.
Anyhoo! Here's a silly clones/battalions spotters guide, including color hex codes gathered from either the movies or main show!
Feel free to educate others and share it around!

Yeah. As she has mentioned in multiple interviews, Karen Traviss wrote Mandalorians as Picts/Celts, not Polynesians.
And then TCW wrote them as space!vikings. Or perhaps as their modern Nordic counterparts, for which see: blonde pacifists from planet Kalevala (Kalevala is the name of the Finnish national epic).
It’s not that there is anything wrong with space Vikings or Celts (other than that they’ve been done to death—just how many portrayals of fantasy Vikings does this world need when there are so many other wonderful and varied cultures?). Retconning Jango and Boba Fett as not-Mandos and Mandalorians as Nordic-looking peoples can be even internally consistent within in-universe (disregarding EU).
But as it has been pointed out by people smarter than me, the problem is that before Republic Commando and TCW, the main Mandalorian representation in Star Wars were Jango and Boba Fett, played by Māori men (Boba Fett was played by other actors before Temuera Morrison and Daniel Logan, but they never took the helmet off). Which is significant in the context of cinema being overwhelmingly white, and the wider context of living in a world with rampant racism and cultural imperialism.
So when that rare representation gets overwritten with white, European cultures? Fans who felt they finally had some representation understandably felt like they were slapped in the face. That’s also a significant part of the reason why the “banishment of the warriors to Concordia” plot line has genocidal vibes to some fans. It’s not about whether the Watsonian in-universe explanation does or doesn’t make sense. To fans who feel slighted by these writing choices that’s irrelevant. It’s about what the Doylist out-of-universe choices are telling the fans: that it is okay to overwrite non-Western cultures and representations with Western ones & POC actors are suited to playing second rate hacks and enslaved cannon fodder, not representing cool warrior cultures and their leaders.
This is the actual reason why many fans (myself included) have swung so hard to the other extreme in their portrayals of Mandalorian culture as multicultural, multi-racial/multi-species, gender-agnostic, Polynesian-inspired and empathetically non-western. It has very little to do with whether such portrayals are supported by canon—they are not. It’s about the transformative power of fanworks. It’s about creating the kind of representation we want to see in art and media in a world that’s lacking it.
We are not creating multi-racial and multi-species representations of Mandalore because they are justified by canon. We’re creating them precisely because they are not.
I’m so sick of everyone trying to undermine what it means to have Temuera lead a show. Yes seeing Din was awesome!! But the implications are frustrating and infuriating.
The one good episode is given to Din. We don’t even get Boba.
Temuera as Boba Fett is so so important. You have to understand, Mandalorian culture, specifically before it was made Legends, is completely built around Polynesian themes.
Yes. It’s often poorly written, yeah a lot of the shit is misused and racist, but its also THERE and It’s obvious.
Original Mandalorians are described as a “nomadic group of clan based people”. They charted stars and started homes on new worlds. That’s literally just what Polynesians are. For generations my people used the stars to chart the ocean and find new homes. For generations, Polynesians traveled from island to island settling and then moving on.
The kov'nyn or Keldabe kiss is just a honi (or hogi). Two people press their heads together and breathe in. This is a traditional greeting in both Mando and Polynesian cultures.
Mandalorian armor is unique to a family and the painting can tell a story. This is identical to the meaning of most Polynesian tattooing practices. They are a life story. They are unique and some design patterns are passed through families and generations. None are the same. They are all special and unique.
The Dha Werda Verda, a traditional Mandalorian chant and dance, later adopted by Clone Troopers has a striking resemblance to the traditional Māori haka, a dance and chant.
These elements were added AFTER Temuera Morrison was cast in Attack of the Clones. These elements are pulled from his background as a Māori man, part of the larger Polynesian subgroup. These elements were written in BECAUSE of his heritage! It’s really important to understand this is where most Mandalorian culture comes from. Polynesians.
Temuera is working so hard to bring these back cultural elements to Star Wars since most lore was wiped durning the Disney buy. He’s trying to hard to make a good show and provide representation. He’s passionate and inspiring and it’s sucks to see him ignored by fans and writers
Please understand that having a Polynesian man restore Polynesian representation in a mainstream show is so so important.
