The whole day had gone to shit the moment Luke had spotted Julie talking to Nick.

And it wasn’t like he was jealous or anything. Because he wasn’t. Why would he be jealous of Nick of all people? With his stupid hats and cheesy pick up lines and dumb dance moves. Honestly, Luke didn’t get what people saw in him. What Julie saw in him. As far as Luke could tell, Nick had the personality of a tomato. Or a grape. Or, something equally as boring. Which was what Nick was. Boring.

Yet Julie had been talking to him for the last hour, laughing at something he was saying, tucking her hair behind her ears the way she did whenever she was a little nervous about something. Though what she had to be nervous about, Luke didn’t know, it was Nick.

“If you keep glaring like that your secret is going to get out,” Reggie says from the stool next to him and Luke whips his head to look at him, smoothing the glare from his face into what he hopes is perplexed confusion.

“What secret? I don’t have a secret,” he shakes his head, but judging by the grin that spreads across Reggie’s face he replied too quickly. Luke grabs his drink, something overly sweet and pretending to be a cocktail but without the alcohol, and looks everywhere but his friend, “Shut up.”

Maybe he has a secret but he’s not jealous, that’s not what this is about. Today was supposed to be a day for them. Hanging out at the faire, eating too much food, riding too many rides, soaking up the sun and enjoying their last day of summer vacation before they settled down to record an album and take over the world.

Only Luke had got caught in traffic and been late and when he’d finally made it to the pier Julie was talking to Nick.

Julie was talking to Nick and she hadn’t even said hello to him yet.

Okay. Maybe he’s jealous. Fuck.

He grips his drink a little tighter, cringes as he takes a sip and throws a glare at Reggie, “What the hell did you order?”

“Watermelon-Lime cooler. It looked pretty,” he shrugs, biting at the end of his straw as he smiles widely.

“Right,” he nods once, and spins back around on his stool so he can see Julie and Nick again. Julie, whos’ leaning against the side of a table and smiling at something Nick is saying and brushing hair over her shoulder. “I’m going to go say hi.”

He doesn’t wait to see what Reggie has to say about it, though he catches sight of his friend turning on his own stool to watch him walk away. Great. Now he’ll have an audience. But that’s fine. He’s just going to say hello to one of his best friends. He’s allowed to do that.

“Luke!” Julie exclaims as he approaches her table, a smile pulling across her face that makes Luke smile back on instinct, her eyes lighting up as she moves over a little for him to join them at the table.

“Oh hey Luke,” Nick nods at him, a pleasant, boring smile on his face.

“Nick,” he nods back, quick to turn his attention back to Julie, nudging her shoulder lightly with his elbow, “Sorry I was late. Traffic,” he chuckles.

“That’s okay. Nick was just telling me about his plans for next year. He’s going travelling.” There’s something about the way Julie says it that makes Luke want to laugh, and there’s something about the idea of Nick traveling that makes him want to laugh even more.

“Oh? That’s cool, going anywhere fun?” He asks, trying to morph his laugh into a smile. Though he doesn’t think he does a good job given the way Julie kicks his ankle.

Luke stops listening to whatever Nick has to say after the first mention of Mexico, and only tunes into the conversation when Julie says something. And okay, he knows it’s rude, and that he’s being a bit of a jerk but he can’t help it. He just does not like Nick.

He’s not entirely proud of what he does next.

It sort of happens in slow motion, though not slow enough for him to be able to stop it. One minute his drink is on the table, the next he’s flicking it a little too hard and it’s contents spilling across the surface and on to Nick.

“Shit!” The blonde exclaims, jumping back from the table and Luke has to bite his lip to stop himself from laughing at the spreading wet stain along his thighs and down his leg. Who wears white trousers anyway?

“Are you okay?” Julie asks, reaching forward like she’s going to help, only Nick steps back again, shaking his head and throwing a look at Luke that he can’t quite decipher.

“I’m gonna go find some napkins,” he mutters, a tense smile on his face as he looks at Julie and then he’s walking away. And Luke finally lets his laugh out.

“What the hell Luke!?” She demands, hitting his arm with the back of her hand and it doesn’t hurt but Luke winces anyway.

“What? It was an accident!” He defends, shuffling a little away and putting a little space between them.

“That was no not an accident. Nick’s nice. There’s no need to be such a dick to him,” Julie shakes her head at him, a small furrow between her brows as she glares at him.

“Yeah. Nice,” Luke mutters, only to wince again when Julie hits his arm again.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.”

“Just tell me why you did it!” Julie says, eyes a little wide as she looks at him and Luke doesn’t mean to say it. Doesn’t mean to admit to this secret he’s kept close to his chest for weeks, months, years. But Julie’s looking up at him, asking for the truth and Luke’s never been able to deny her anyway.

“Because I’m in love with you, okay!” He blurts it out. The words he’s been holding on to for so long and blows out a breath. Letting them settle in the sudden silence around them.

And Julie doesn’t say anything. Just looks at him.

“Oh,” she says quietly, blinking.

“And you’re not with me, which is fine. It’s–– it’s fine. I just. You asked and I––” he starts rambling, one hand rubbing at the back of his neck as his other gestures between them, and he doesn’t know what he’s going to say. Only that he needs to fix it. Because Julie is his best friend and he’s in love with her but she’s not in love with him and it’s fine. He can deal with that but not if they can’t still be friends. So he needs to fix it. To take it back to––

“I love you too,” Julie says, taking a step towards him and reaching for his wildly moving hand to clasp it in her own.

“Huh?” Is the only thing that comes out of his mouth. Which is fine really, because apparently Julie loves him, despite him being dumb.

“I’m going to kiss you now, okay?” she asks quietly, and Luke doesn’t know when she’d closed the distance between them, but he definitely knows when her lips press against his.
